The sunroom, with prime water views, was my home base, where two giggling girls played all day then slept soundly at night to nature’s soundtrack. Though it may vary in appearance, this experience is universal. Perhaps your Clear Lake is Lake Oconee, and your sunroom is a treehouse perched high amongst the trees or atop a tube gliding across glass water. The common thread: places and spaces that delight and inspire, and the people you get to enjoy them with. Our August issue celebrates the laid-back ease of life outside the

TA B L E T O P S

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: Your tabletop emanates effortless style. Tell us about the inspiration behind your design. ALISON WOMACK JOWERS: When we bought the lake house during COVID, I wasn’t thinking “lake,” I was thinking “happy!” The kitchen cabinets were originally dark gray, but I had a desire to do something surprising and painted them bright yellow, which inspired the color scheme. From there, I didn’t need a transportive tabletop because we are already in a place surrounded by beauty. Natural materials take center stage, and the moss mound is a constant centerpiece of my table. For this setting, Kelly and Katie from Ephemera Design Concepts added potted ferns to the moss mound to create a “living plant arrangement.” I prefer an open almost flowing feel to arrangements to ensure the main focus is the view. 12

AH&L: There’s no shortage of scenic sights at your lake home, whether at the table, by the bar, or on the porch. How do your entertaining zones differ at the lake than when you’re entertaining in Atlanta? AWJ: In Atlanta, you invite guests to your home where you have dinner in the dining room. At the lake, friends tend to pop in by boat, so different entertainment areas are perfect for this reason. The top of the boathouse is a daytime entertainment area for us, and we have a large farm table on the front side of the house that is slightly shaded for when you want a reprieve from water activities. I love ending the evening on the screened porch overlooking the lake. The common theme throughout each area is laughter—it lingers longer than the light and can be found in any space, any time of the day.

I can’t wait for this to open in Clayton.”

AH&L: The bar next to your fireplace has a stone sink built into the furniture, which is such a unique feature. Tell us more about this and how you use it. AWJ: The furniture itself is the Murano Sideboard with frosted white glass doors from Tritter Feefer. Custom-made in LaGrange, Georgia, this piece houses a wine cooler and ice machine and serves as our bar. I found the stone sink on a family vacation in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. AH&L: Your mother, Cheryl Womack, is an acclaimed Atlanta designer as well, so you’ve grown up in this industry. What was it like working with your mom and how did you develop your personal design style over the years? AWJ: Studying business and marketing in college, working with Cheryl wasn’t the game plan, but Mom always included me in outings such as antiquing trips in the U.S. and abroad, design lectures, museum exhibits, glass shows, garden club events—you name it. I was able to stretch my own imagination and develop my own style while acquiring knowledge and skill from my mother. You may think she is “all in” for traditional, but Cheryl’s eye for cutting-edge design never ceases to surprise and amaze me. It has been such a joy to work and learn from her. 13

“When we bought the house during COVID, I wasn’t thinking ‘lake,’ I was thinking ‘happy.’” AH&L: Hosting can be hard! What is your top tip for making a summer get-together memorable for guests? AWJ: To me, the heart of making a memorable experience is taking guests away from their everyday life to relax and have fun—low stress and low fuss. Creating a sense of nostalgia, time that doesn’t revolve around computers, phones, TVs, and schedules, and instead consists of sun-soaked days and dinner followed by games or dancing in the evening—all memories in the making. AH&L: Lake Burton is a dreamy setting for any occasion, but especially summer celebrations. Tell us what your perfect day at the lake looks like. AWJ: An early-morning boat ride—either a pontoon cruise with coffee or on the ski boat to watch Sam, my husband Jay’s son, water ski on the glass water. I also love getting a workout with a sprint in the kayak. Afternoons are fun for tubing with kids and stand-up paddle boarding. I always loved taking my dogs along! womackinteriors.com 15

28717 For $50 million, you can break a North Carolina real estate record and purchase the most valuable property in the state: SAGEE MANOR, a mountaintop estate on 49 acres surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest. The 12,000-square-foot home was designed by Atlanta architect Keith Summerour, who was inspired by a circa-1900 Tudor hunting lodge built near the city. Another Atlanta connection is Bonneau Ansley, co-owner of Christie’s International Real Estate Highlands-Cashiers and one of the listing agents. Atlantans have long retreated to Cashiers, North Carolina, for the 20-degree temperature respite in the summer and spectacular colors of leaf-peeping season in fall. His entire life, author and interior designer James Farmer has called Cashiers his second home—his grandparents honeymooned there, and he bought his own property in the exclusive High Hampton community over a decade ago. “September in Cashiers is the best-kept secret,” he says. “I really hate to tell people how wonderful it is because the summer crowds have gone, and the fall leaf-lookers haven’t arrived. I call it ‘peaches meets pumpkins’—half summer and half fall—and everywhere is lovely and easy to get into on the Plateau.” (“The Plateau” means the gorgeous stretch of mountainous earth ranging from Highlands to Cashiers.)

Naomi Von Habersham IF YOU’VE READ my musings for any length of time, you already know that while I love to wax nostalgic about the good old days, I also like to ignore the fact that I’m getting up there in age. Unfortunately, that fact wasn’t so easy to dismiss during a recent girls’ weekend with my friends at the beach when our advancing age became glaringly apparent. There was a time not so long ago when we loved staying up most of the night, laughing and gossiping while consuming a few too many glasses of wine. But on this trip, none of us could keep our eyes open past 10 p.m., forcing us to retire to our bedrooms at what we once considered an obscenely early hour. I also experienced a new aversion to water, which may or may not have anything to do with age. When I was younger, I loved swimming in the ocean and floating for hours in the pool. These days, the call of the water is so faint that I barely want to dip my toe. Instead, I much prefer to park myself under an umbrella on the beach and read trashy novels all day, something I did with abandon on this trip. Who knew that one could read the bulk of Jackie Collins’ oeuvre over the course of a weekend? Foodwise, my beach trips used to always entail boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, frozen virgin daiquiris, and frozen Snickers bars eaten poolside. Now, my friends and I are far too focused on the physical repercussions to indulge in such treats. One friend has high cholesterol, which meant no shrimp boils for us, while another avoids anything fried because of the heartburn that ensues. Me, I’m trying to limit my sugar intake, meaning no more frozen Snickers bars or daiquiris. Despite the early bedtimes and dietary preoccupations, we had a marvelous time nonetheless. Although we might now focus on subjects that once never crossed our minds, we don’t let them get in the way of having a good time. 29

MANY FEAR CHANGE—but this refined eatery embraces it. At Auburn Angel, embark on a contemporary dining journey, featuring an ever-changing seasonal menu. Coined for the street it resides on, Auburn Angel breathes new life into Downtown Atlanta. With a focus on community, the culinary team aspires to uplift the neighborhood, aiding revitalization efforts. “The area deserves a place that is elegant and nourishing,” says executive chef and culinary director Robbie Pacheco. The unassuming spot—built in the 1940s—brims with character and boasts an expansive narrative. “We want to showcase the history to the public, not wash out what has been here,” says Pacheco. “We’re bringing to life a space that was, and has always been, a restaurant.” Inside, original

Plan your escape to Electric Hospitality’s new concept STRANGERS IN PARADISE, boasting a premium view of Atlanta’s waterfront—the BeltLine. Capturing the ambience of a 1980s-themed beachside resort, the space features a large U-shape bar and palm leaf canopy with vintage decor adorning the walls. With a touch of glamour, gold table lamps, dark paneling, and pendant lights add a new-fashioned feel, elevating the space’s existing charm. The culinary team knows no bounds, pushing the creative envelope to develop a truly spectacular concept. “We are all veterans of the business,” says Pacheco. “Everyone has worked together for years and brings their own value, so we get to have a lot of fun.” With no core menu, the dishes are ever-changing to reflect seasonal and market ingredients. “We don’t have rules here,” says Pacheco. “I think that is the true identity of the place because we are changing all the time.” The rotating menu consists of refined

contemporary dishes like Steak Tartare and Ox Tails. Revel in the familiarity of the deliciously indulgent Lamb Burger with meat ground exclusively in-house. For those seeking stability, rest assured the seasonal dessert menu undergoes little change. One taste of the Rhubarb Almond Tart with hibiscus syrup and almond butter crunch will leave diners wishing they ordered more. Retreat to the private patio to sip on refreshing cocktails like the Cussin Granny and Unc. Continuing the mission of supporting others, the idea behind the restaurant is surprisingly simple. “We want to showcase what we do great to the people we love,” says Pacheco. “People may look at the outside of the building and come in with low expectations, but they will walk through the doors, look around, taste the food, and be pleasantly surprised.” auburnangel.com

Back after its two-year hiatus, HAWKERS ASIAN STREET FOOD debuts a revamped patio, refreshed design, and menu additions. Letter from the

SHOWHOUSE CHAIR Cheryl Stanzione Welcome to the 27th annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse! It’s an honor to chair the Cashiers Historical Society’s signature fundraising event this year. With the ongoing growth in our community, it is more important than ever to support the Cashiers Historical Society and to have a strong voice in our future development. The Showhouse and its special events facilitate this goal. We have 10 days packed with exciting events for your enjoyment! Do take advantage of them because they only occur once a year. This year, we are thrilled to showcase 15 talented interior designers, each poised to spark your imagination. They have been carefully chosen to embody the spirit of our local community and originate from towns that align with locations from which our population has migrated. This event could not happen without the benefactors and corporate sponsors who serve as the strength and base of a totem pole. Building upon the ‘pole’ are the committee chairs and the numerous volunteers. And I would be remiss not to personally thank Amelia and Lauren at CHS for their immeasurable support and assistance. And, thank YOU for being here!

Letter from

CASHIERS HISTORICAL SOCIETY Amelia Golcheski It all began with a house. In 1996, a group of community members with a passion for history and preservation chose to protect and preserve the Zachary-Tolbert house. Long a fixture on 107 South, the Zachary-Tolbert house is a unique example of Greek Revival architecture in the mountains of southern Appalachia. It also tells the story of Cashiers from the 19th century until the dawn of the 21st century. By restoring the Zachary-Tolbert house, community members laid the cornerstone for the Cashiers Historical Society. We’ve been preserving the history and culture of the Cashiers Valley ever since. Funds raised from the Cashiers Designer Showhouse allow us to continue our mission to preserve the tangible and intangible heritage of this corner of far western North Carolina. Throughout the year, we offer educational programs for adults and children alike. Check out our website for more information on how to attend those events. Thank you for supporting CHS by attending the Showhouse! After visiting, be sure to come to CHS to tour the ZacharyTolbert house—the house that started it all.

WITH A RARE, COVETABLE point lot on Lake Burton, architect Tim Adams captured dreamy lake views from every angle possible when designing this vacation home for a Sandy Springs family. “You have water on three of the four sides,” says Adams, who worked in tandem with interior designer Jamie Kirkman, builder Sam Jenkins, and landscape architect Jonathan Bussell. “It’s not often that you have a lot with this much water frontage, so we immediately embraced that and created a footprint that wraps that whole point.” The entryway’s transparent steel doorway deliberately parades those scenes, immediately pulling you into the blissful lake life. Moving through the house, natural wood beams and stone accents echo the home’s exterior, and expansive steel windows and doorways continue to break down the barrier between the inside and the outside. spaces with towering ceilings and unique architectural accents complement the surrounding scenery. “Something that’s special about this house is that we didn’t do a second floor,” says Adams. “That gave us the freedom to be creative with different ceiling heights for visual interest and allowed us to have the great room vaulted, which enhances the view down the lake.” Kirkman catered spaces to the couple’s love of entertaining and to the active lifestyle of their three teenage boys. “The goal was to design a home that gave everyone their own space,” says Kirkman, “and to create a laid-back ambience that puts everyone at ease.” She intently designed the boys’ bedrooms to match their own personal style—each fitted with two queen beds for sleepovers—and fashioned inviting communal spaces, like the handsome rec room with game tables and a bar where both adults and kids can coexist. “The house has 63

Focused on tranquility, Kirkman kept the home’s color palette quiet with splashes of blue that call to the water, and tightly curated the furniture placement so as not to compete with the views. Special attention was paid to easy entertaining, from a screened porch with a sitting and dining area, to a dual-sided bar with indoor

Taking Shape Architect Brad Wright added oak timbers to frame out the kitchen and add a bit of softness, the shape of them repeated on the island. The trio opted against a large range hood in order to capitalize on the outdoor scenery.

L

Large windows and natural light are a given when it comes to shoreline home design, but the real genius lies in the creative use of lines, angles, and materials. And in the case of this nearly 9,000-square-foot Lake Keowee, South Carolina, home, five innovative design minds are better than one. Homeowner and designer Jessica Whitley led the charge for the design in collaboration with Brittany Stafford of Source, architect Brad Wright, builder Will Hines, and landscape designer Alex Smith. Her inspirations, unsurprisingly, were the natural elements surrounding the home such as the water and the trees. The crux then was how to capitalize on those details without compromising her vision. “I wanted it to feel like a resort-style home—to

JessicaWhitley.indd 77

feel like I’m on vacation,” says Whitley. “Brad and I are very collaborative. We draw together and have honest conversations.” Wright, who also designed the Whitley family’s primary residence in nearby Athens, Georgia, began by learning the contours of the land. “The first time I walked the lot, I startled a deer on the southeast portion of the property that is surrounded by water on two sides. It was immediately obvious that this was the ideal spot for the home’s covered porch,” he says. And the area is a crowd favorite, particularly thanks to the custom suspended porch beds that almost float like they are on the water. “Because of the way we did the iron pieces, they sway perfectly. You have to kick people off of them,” says Whitley. 77

The integrated stone sink fabricated by Visionary Stoneworks is a striking focal point.

From the cast-covered porch, each room spills seamlessly into the next. The kitchen is the Whitleys’ social hub, perfect for hosting a crowd in luxurious comfort. The large dining table matches the scale of the island that’s topped with a waterfall-edged Brazilian quartzite. Suspended above, custom lighting pinpoints what is being served or cooked, and the range hood is noticeably missing too. “We chose a simple hood, so we could capture the views,” says Stafford. A pass-through bar creates a spot prime for entertaining before opening to the great room, which is layered in shades of white with performance fabrics to ease stain removal. “Jessica has such a great eye,” says Stafford. “When you use neutrals, it’s such a gift to be able to partner all the textures together and make them work.” Stafford emphasized the room’s vibrance by designing a grand French limestone fireplace and using Venetian plaster for the walls. “Our team felt like it was important to create depth, and plaster has the amazing ability to do that,” she says. As for Whitley’s preferred rooms in the house, the primary suite is a retreat from guests. Here, two plush chaise lounges overlook the lake, a soaking tub with an Arabescato Oribico surround is a spa-like sanctuary, and a coffee bar is nestled inside for preparing 81

morning brews without leaving the bedroom. The materials in the space mimic the colors outside, such as the browns and taupes of the bark and the soil as well as the movement of the water. Stafford agrees, “We wanted to bring in a natural, very monochromatic texture and create depth through the material itself.” When the family wants to be together, one can oftentimes find them in the tower, accessible by a spiral staircase designed and executed by Whitley and Wright. The family and their guests lounge on the oversize mohair sectional, sip cocktails, and play pool while overlooking a treehouse view of the lake. Wright says of the finished product, “The goal for this project was to use natural materials that connect it to the beauty of its surroundings. Cypress siding represents the surrounding water, the cedar shingle roof conveys the feel of the forest’s canopy, and natural limestone anchors the home to the earth.” Couple those natural materials with contemporary elements, and the resulting Whitley home is warm, youthful, and inspiring. Country Calm A barn house with fresh flair in rural Georgia provides respite for a young family of five Written by SEJAL BHIMA Photographed by EMILY FOLLOWILL Styled by YVONNE ORCHARD

Years in the making, a barn house located outside of Madison, Georgia, finally became a reality for an outdoor-loving family. It was designed and built by Southern Landscape Designs alongside Liz Williams Interiors.

EVERY TIME A YOUNG couple from Madison, Georgia, spent time on their rural plot of land just outside town, they made mental notes. Because while living on Madison’s idyllic Main Street provided no shortage of charm and convenience, they found themselves increasingly drawn to an even slower and quieter pace of life. So one day, the couple sat down at the kitchen table of their in-town home and began sketching on the back of a napkin. It was a cabin, inspired by ideas gathered over years spent enjoying the land—from fishing and hunting with their children to hosting family gatherings. After making tweaks and revisions of their initial concept with builder Southern Landscape Designs—who also designed the outdoor area— the final plans called for a larger barn house that could eventually serve as guest quarters if the family decided to transition to the countryside full time. “They weren’t ready to pull the trigger just yet, so they decided to start with this as sort of a test run,” says interior designer Liz Williams,

Quaint Kitchen above, left and right The home’s front door opens directly into the kitchen and living room, so Williams opted to keep the walls and cabinets the same color to create a visual sense of ease. Paintings from Gregg Irby Gallery encapsulate the home’s surroundings. opposite Perfectly sized for weekend getaways, the petite kitchen also doubles as the breakfast room. Williams’ search for furnishings to match the room’s slender proportions led her to antique ladder-back chairs from Chairish and a scrubbed English pine table from Acquisitions. who previously worked with the couple on their Madison home. For this country retreat, Williams was tasked with creating a classic and comfortable scheme that honored the home’s surroundings. “We wanted it to feel like an old barn that’s been thoughtfully restored, not a new structure just plopped down on the land,” she says. To that end, the home’s simple, rustic exterior features traditional board-and-batten wood siding with a lower stone surround. A tin roof and pine green front door further enhance the aesthetic. But upon entering, a fresher take on country living awaits. Taking cues from the colors of a vibrant Western painting purchased early on in the project, Williams sprinkled its palette of teals and browns as accents against the home’s airy white backdrop. Clean lines also mix

comfortably with the character of antique furnishings throughout. “Their in-town home is traditional in style, and while we kept that essence here, we also let a kickback-and-relax feel guide us,” says Williams. After all, she notes, they’re here to unwind. As the weather warms up, the back of the barn house is a prime spot for exactly that. The expansive outdoor seating area has played host to many barbecues and impromptu dinners, and the nearby firepit is a guest favorite for s’mores and nightcaps with the wide-open night sky above. While the couple and their children continue to split time between the country and city for now, moments like these surely make the prospect of shifting to life off the beaten path full time an alluring notion. GRACEFUL ESTATE Located in Umbria, Italy, secluded estate TENUTA DI MURLO is where dreams come true

SUMMER ESCAPES TO COASTAL ITALY top the list of many looking for a place to retreat, though it’s a secluded countryside estate in Umbria, Italy, that embodies the ultimate air of luxury. Stressors fade away as winding roads guide you toward your final destination of Tenuta di Murlo—a family-run estate spanning 18,000 acres of rolling hills and flourishing valleys. Just a 20-minute drive from the Perugia airport or a scenic two-hour train ride from Rome or Florence and you’ve arrived in a place fairytales could be inspired by. Owned by Alessio and Carlotta Carabba Tettamanti and in Alessio’s family for centuries, the estate consists of over 80 buildings that were abandoned after World War II—from churches to castles, farmhouses, and other rustic structures. The family has spent nearly two decades restoring and renovating some of these into villas that respect their history, yet live well for present day. Nine villas and three hotel rooms exude the natural charm of the landscape, where lush grounds, private infinity pools, sweeping gardens, and collected interiors—carefully 108

curated by Carlotta—beckon visitors to unwind. Tucked into the sprawling hills, each villa feels as though it’s worlds away. Villa Molinella, a restored water mill with an alluring private underground jacuzzi, is a romantic getaway for two, while the eight-guest Villa Penna sits hilltop as the estate’s crown jewel. Villa Castiglione Ugolino, an ancient castle and adjoining church, dates back to the 11th century and now houses up to 20 visitors for dreamy holidays, parties, and wedding receptions. Adding to the appeal of the villas, culinary luxuries are in abundance at the estate. Traditional Umbrian dishes interpreted in a modern way dot the menu at Il Caldaro restaurant, where guests can dine in the garden under flowing oak trees or enjoy the warm glow of the interior space that was once an old farmhouse. Or eat at home, where private-chef experiences and meal deliveries from each villa’s personal house manager take alfresco dining to new heights. And if you’re able to abandon your poolside post, there are many worlds to discover at Tenuta di Murlo. Trust in skilled guides

and trained dogs as you forage for truffles throughout the dense forests before bringing your finds back to Il Caldaro to immediately enjoy. A cooking class spills the secrets to crafting perfect pasta, where you can indulge in your creations with found truffles, local tomatoes, and fresh cheeses made with goat milk from the property’s herd. After lunch, practice your swing at nearby Antognolla Golf, where cliff-lined fairways and undulating greens earn the course its recognition as one of the best in Italy. And with on-site activities from beekeeping and honey tasting, to horseback riding, hiking and biking excursions, spa treatments, picnics, and more, there is no shortage of fun to be had. The formula of Tenuta di Murlo is a unique one, combining passionate and personable owners, friendly staff, and unmatched experiences with an unexplainable air of ease—all in a picture-perfect setting. The only acceptable question comes at the end of your holiday: “When can I return?” murlo.com

from top to bottom Secluded within the valley of Murlo, Villa Molinella’s charming interior offers an ideal getaway for up to two guests. At Molinella, what was once a water mill has been converted to an underground jacuzzi accessed through a glass door in the living room. Alfresco meals are unmatched at Villa Penna thanks to its perch that overlooks the best views of the estate.

ISLAND MAGIC Ever longed to stay on a remote island? LITTLE PALM ISLAND RESORT & SPA in the Florida Keys is drenched in luxurious isolation Written by ANGELA CARAWAY-CARLTON

ABSOLUTE MAGIC. IT’S the only way to define a dreamlike escape to Little Palm Island Resort & Spa, an exclusive private island resort that’s located 30 miles north of Key West, Florida. The fantasy-island adventure begins the moment you board an antique motor yacht from Little Torch Key to cut through the crystal clear waters—arriving 15 minutes later at the remote island’s dock to warm fanfare from staff. (If you’re so inclined, arrive via seaplane from nearby airports.) Immediately, you’re immersed in a blissful world where there are no kids, televisions, or ringing cell phones. Everyday distractions are replaced with the tranquility of waves lapping the shoreline and the raw nature of the lush 4-acre surrounds where incredible animal encounters happen daily. If you’re lucky, one of the area’s storybook Key deer may amble into the Zen Garden for a drink from its pools as you sip your morning coffee; or you may spot a pod of dolphins or rays in the shallows. There’s good reason why Little Palm is beloved by celebrities and those marking a milestone or romantic 110

occasion. Idyllic seclusion is the resort’s biggest draw: 30 bungalow suites are generously distanced along crushed seashell paths and the island is capped at 60 guests. During the day, nap in a hammock along the water’s edge or lazily lounge by the pool in a cabana while downing a Gumby Slumber. (Hint: The rumspiked drink’s name implies its napping powers.) Don’t sleep too long because there’s much to do, including access to complimentary kayaks, paddle boards, and Boston Whaler boats plus reservable adventures like snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing excursions. SpaTerre flaunts Balinese-style, indoor-outdoor breeziness and offers exotic treatments that harness the powers of seaweed, hot stones, and seashells. It’s worth getting up at sunrise for the Madrugada treatment, where you’ll wade into the ocean to receive a massage on a table that hovers above the water while experiencing the serene sounds of nature. In the evenings, piano music drifts from the Monkey Hut lounge, and sunset is the most enchanting time of day. Picture: flickering tiki torches and an unforgettable toes-in-the-sand dinner as you watch the sun sink into the horizon. Even though you’re on an island, accommodations feel more luxurious than a five-star hotel. Bungalow suites are a vision of modern West Indies opulence, with vaulted bamboo ceilings, fourpost canopy beds, and separate living areas with velvety sofas. Read or stargaze from your suite’s private oceanfacing terrace, and some bungalows boast copper soaking tubs or a private beach for ultimate romance. Little Palm Island rips you away from reality and leaves you yearning for another day in a paradise that defies the ordinary. littlepalmisland.com

SPLASH OF PANACHE Embrace the luxury of sailing on your own private yacht…no jacket required Written by GINA CHRISTMAN

IMAGINE SETTING SAIL on a vessel that seamlessly blends the casual elegance of a private yacht with the amenities of a luxurious cruise ship. Limited to just 312 guests, the Windstar Star Legend provides personalized service with one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios at sea. Here, you’re not just a passenger, you’re part of the family—this crew anticipates your requests before you even make them, from your thoughtful stateroom attendant who knows exactly how to make your suite feel like home to the bartenders who remember the precise way you like your cocktail. Perhaps the most alluring aspect of this yacht is its ability to explore the world’s most captivating destinations in a truly immersive way. The yacht’s smaller size and nimble maneuverability allow the Star Legend to navigate tiny ports and hidden coves that larger ships can’t access, allowing guests to experience the authentic charm of each destination up close. To boot, Windstar keeps shore excursions small with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to 112

go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people, and its culture special and meaningful. The entire fleet sails all over the world, and Star Legend’s enchanting journey through the storied British Isles is a shining example. The voyage begins in edgy Edinburgh—the perfect launching pad to delve into Scotland’s rollicking capital before savoring medieval alleys, castles, and single-malt tastings in the charming village of Oban. Swap kilts for Irish cables in Belfast, where you can unravel the Titanic’s tragic tale at its stunning museum, reenact Game of Thrones lore on location tours, or simply soak up the personality-packed sights along the wild Antrim Coast. After roistering through Dublin’s jovial pubs, head to the Powerscourt Estate in Enniskerry for a wee dram at the Fercullen Irish Whiskey distillery amidst its gorgeous gardens. From the quaint Welsh harbor of Fishguard to the remote, wildflowercloaked Isles of Scilly, you’ll savor a taste of the delightfully unhurried

coastal corners missed by larger ships. An ideal ending to 10 days of unearthing local lores and storied lands. Once back aboard, unwind in the heated pool or whirlpools as your Celtic adventures give way to pinch-me moments of serenity. The stunningly chic spa and fitness center provide a perfect relaxing counterpoint to the day’s adventures as well. Everything about this all-suite “floating hotel” is pure luxury. The spacious, open-layout suites feature well-lit bathrooms with two sinks, spacious tile showers (some suites have tubs), and L’Occitane toiletries. And each suite has the most welcome touch—walk-in closets with ample shelving, drawers, and hanging space. While other cruise lines might do culinary partnerships, Windstar’s collaboration with the James Beard Foundation (considered the highest honor for culinary professionals in the U.S.) makes this a distinctive offering among the small-ship luxury cruise segment. Select James Beard Foundation member chefs are brought onboard to host special culinary-themed cruises throughout the year. During these cruises, the featured chefs provide market tours, cooking demonstrations, meals with wine pairings, lectures, book signings, and other culinary-focused experiences for guests. In essence, sailing on a small cruise ship unlocks a world of intimate experiences, authentic encounters, and personalized adventures. It’s the perfect choice for travelers seeking to explore the globe in a more immersive and meaningful way. And true to its slogan, Windstar’s way is 180 degrees from ordinary. windstarcruises.com 113

END NOTE BEHIND THE SCENES

MY MUST-HAVES

Atlanta interior designer CAROLE WEAKS of C. WEAKS INTERIORS, INC. shares her summer style, design do’s, and mountain memories Produced by THE EDITORS

typically consists of using neutrals for the large upholstery pieces and color on smaller pieces like a small chair, pillows, and art. In the mountains where the colors take on a different feel from the coastal areas, I like sticking to a two-color scheme. Recently, I did a large room with a strong blue and light neutrals. It’s calm as well as inviting, and since it’s my clients’ favorite color, it works!”

pattern perfect

“I love having the opportunity to install one of the de Gournay pattern wallpapers. While it’s a luxury, it delivers and never disappoints. One of my favorite rooms is a garden room done in a rich green pattern with almost all the upholstery in light colors. We did throw in a little blush fabric here and there, which shows minimally in the wallpaper pattern. It has a uniqueness that I love.” degournay.com

rest easy “We’re in North Carolina a good

bit during the summer, and it’s wonderful to feel the change from the city. Not only are there always outdoor activities, but it’s a great atmosphere to simply do nothing but sit on the porch and read. It’s like getting permission to rest and relax.”

120

summer sweets “My favorite summer

treat is dining alfresco. While it’s always fun to do the typical meal on the grill, I really enjoy incorporating lots of fresh local produce and always ending with some sort of ice-cream dessert.”

retail therapy “The Interiors Market

has combined its two shops on Miami Circle, and it’s a treasure trove of different shops and a variety of styles. Another plus is that there are several other great shops in the area.” interiorsmarket.com

Bella Cucina’s Artichoke Lemon Pesto; de Gournay Charleston Chinoiserie; Farrow & Ball Dix Blue; A porch by Carole Weaks boasts striking mountain views in Highlands, North Carolina.

go-to gift

“One of my favorite hostess gifts is something that can be used as an appetizer. Bella Cucina has many really good options—their artichoke spread is delicious and has a long shelf life. I always love getting something like this myself; it really comes in handy.” bellacucina.com

style envy

“What I try to steer away from is just ‘stuff ’ that simply fills a space. My personal accessories are items that I’ve purchased in France over the years, and they bring back some really great memories. And you can never underestimate the impact that art has in a space. Sometimes that’s all the accessorizing you need.”
