FROM THE ARCHIVES Celebrating AH&L’s 40th anniversary year

signing off ONE CHRISTMAS MORNING some years ago, my brother and I awoke to a letter waiting for us in front of the fireplace. This letter had traveled far and wide, through sunshine, rain and snow, braving oceans, winds, birds and planes before arriving to its final destination right there in our living room. The important news inside: Santa Claus was retiring. Well, he was retiring for my brother and I, that was. “Don’t be sad,” he wrote, “the reindeer and I will return one day when you have your own children. Until then, keep my spirit within you.” While we must have been on the Nice List to receive personal notice, Mr. Claus was onto something when he assured the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. I imagine that many of us continue to carry this air of innocence when December rolls around

each year, despite if the chimney has momentarily run cold. A cold chimney is not the case for the residences featured in this month’s issue, however, whose holiday spirit is alive and well. Designer Sande Beck and architect Ross Piper created a warm, welcoming home base for an Atlanta family of five (page 60), and designer Liza Bryan welcomes us inside her personal abode to teach us that happy, unique-to-you homes—perfectly dressed for designer Clary Bosbyshell saves us a seat at the table for her crisply tailored and beautifully layered Christmas Eve dinner (page 17). As you find a moment to sit down with our December issue, between the parties, baking, and caroling, may you feel the soul of the season radiating throughout. ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: ’Tis the season! Walk us through the inspiration behind your tabletop design. What are the featured elements? CLARY BOSBYSHELL: I love creating a sophisticated table, and Christmas Eve is the most perfect time to pull out all the silver and use it. The table is layered with family heirlooms and new decor items I have collected, like the silver bells, which were given to me each year that my grandmother was alive, and the salad plates in my mother’s wedding china pattern, Hong Kong. AH&L: The rooms throughout the home feature playful patterns and pretty pops of color. Tell us about your approach to using these bolder palettes? How do you achieve a sophisticated interior that doesn’t feel overpowering? CB: I always want my clients’ homes to reflect them, and this client loves English interiors with a very layered and collected look. She loves warm and rich colors and already has a great foundation of collected antiques and art, which are sprinkled throughout the home. She is also a great friend, and I know her so well that it was really fun creating a place that reflected her personal style. AH&L: We love that you commingled traditional holiday decor with items that also hold sentimentality. Tell us the backstory behind the mini tree in the dining room? CB: My husband’s grandmother, Rena Smith, 19

had always been an artist and loved miniatures. She started making these beautiful Christmas trees. Everything is completely handmade except the Radko ornaments. She would customize them for the specific family, and they truly are so special and priceless. AH&L: You’re no stranger to hosting. Tell us how to make a holiday party memorable for your guests. CB: Set a beautiful and whimsical table, lively music and have a signature cocktail. The best parties always have good music and drinks! AH&L: Entertaining season can be stressful. What are some of your best tips for hosting during the holidays? CB: Outsource when you can. I love to decorate for Christmas, but it is 21

always such a busy time for me getting my clients’ homes ready that I can feel overwhelmed trying to do my own. I have used M. Delia Designs the last three years to help me and it is the best gift I give myself. She executes my vision to a T and always has beautiful and creative ideas of her own to add. AH&L: What’s on your Christmas dinner menu? Don’t forget to tell us how you’re stocking the bar! CB: On Christmas Eve we always go to the 4 p.m. Christmas Pageant service at the Cathedral of St. Philip. In order to have dinner ready at a reasonable time, we do as many things in advance as possible. Last Christmas I really got my menu right—

lobster flown in from Maine, pear-and-blue cheese arugula salad, asparagus, and my dad makes the OK Cafe mac-andcheese recipe. And for dessert: peppermint ice cream and cookies. We served martinis and white wine, and to top it off, had espresso martinis ready to help us play Santa into the night. AH&L: What holiday tradition holds a special place with you? CB: It has been really special combining the traditions of my husband’s family and my family and creating our own now that we have children. Since its inception in 2000, Foxglove Antiques & Galleries has continued to set the tone for elevated interiors with a classic, refined style— one that reaches well beyond the borders of Atlanta. That’s thanks to founder Sheila Benson, who from the very beginning, established an unmatched presence in the market with her skillful business acumen, excellent style and warm, welcoming spirit. Benson’s legacy lives on in endless ways throughout the Southeastern design community—with beauty and grace in the homes of her clients, and in the hearts of her many industry friends and colleagues. “Not only was Shelia a very smart businesswoman, but she also had a passion for all things beautiful,” says designer Susan Bozeman, a longtime client and friend. “She loved to travel, was kind and giving, had a wonderful sense of community and supported many important causes. She had such energy and excitement for all of these things and shared it with everyone. She was a beautiful woman both inside and out whom I admired greatly.” 24

Frank Neely Renowned for his projects that reflect timeless elegance and grace, the work of architect Frank Neely of Frank G. Neely Design Associates is woven into the design blueprint of the Atlanta we know today. Beloved by many, his industry peers remember the personal stamp he left on the city, and because of his unrivaled enthusiasm, genuine respect for both the history of a home plus the family inhabiting it and his passion for details—especially in his signature window and cabinetry designs—his work will stand the test of time for decades to come. “Being an Atlanta native, it’s apparent that Frank loved and respected the Southern style and charm of the homes here, and always kept the integrity of the home in mind when renovating,” says designer Amy Morris, who worked on many projects with Neely throughout the years. “His laugh was infectious, and we shared many. He is sorely missed by the design community and Atlanta at large.”

Kenneth Lynch

After various stints at top local architecture studios—such as Toombs, Amisano, and Wells and Cooper Carry—Kenneth Lynch cleared his own lane in the Atlanta design community with the opening of his eponymous firm, Kenneth Lynch & Associates, in 1986. Known for his edited approach to scale and masterful practice of constraint, Lynch’s excellent architectural eye helped spearhead not only a fresher Atlanta, but also the next generation of esteemed architects that would carry the torch of his legacy. “Ken infused modern ideas into his plans and was ahead of his time in the transitional style that was to happen,” says architect Todd Pritchett, who worked with Lynch before opening his own firm, Pritchett + Dixon. “A noble attribute of his was that he fostered talent among the younger members of his staff, and gave us the space to explore our own design ideas. I know that I, along with others, are grateful for that mentoring and have warm thoughts about Ken.” 25

A part-time Buckhead resident for three decades, Elton John is selling his longtime home at PARK PLACE and saying goodbye to Atlanta. Having purchased his first of six units there around 1991, the singer brought welcome attention to the luxury high-rise according to JIM HENDERSON, part of the building’s development team when it was built in the 1980s. “Elton moving to Park Place was like tons of free advertising. I’VE REALLY GOT THE holiday spirit this season, although outwardly, you might not know it. I don’t wish to cause any offense, but I just can’t bring myself to sport a Christmas sweater. In fact, you won’t catch me wearing any holiday novelty attire—unless, of course, I’ve had a few too many glasses of eggnog, in which case, I could end up donning tinsel around my head or a Christmas tree skirt around my waist à la Bernice Clifton in Designing Women. Speaking of holiday skirts, do any of you miss the Christmas plaid hostess skirts we used to wear when entertaining back in the 1970s and ’80s? I remember they looked pretty fabulous when partnered with a frilly white blouse or one of those Geiger Tyrolean-style jackets. (And there I go again, showing my age!) Except for my lack of festive attire, I really am in the holiday spirit, and I’ve got the homemade goodies to show for it. My kitchen counters are stacked with tins filled with cheese straws, bourbon balls and candied grapefruit peel, all prepared by yours truly. The only thing left to do is to distribute them to friends and neighbors. I’m also enjoying having an advent calendar once again. When I was a child, the only Advent calendars available were those that had printed holiday scenes behind each window. There were no chocolate or makeup Advent calendars, and those now-popular wine and liquor calendars would have been verboten back then. That reminds me—I just ordered a variety pack of those liquor-filled chocolates shaped like bottles, because I find they add a festive touch to one’s holiday dinners and gatherings. I’ve also got my holiday music playlist lined up, and I’m happy to say that Mariah Carey is not on it. Instead, I went old school with Perry Como, the Ray Conniff Singers and my personal favorite, Mel Tormé. And so, in the immortal lyrics of Mr. Tormé, I’m offering this simple phrase, to kids from one to 92, though it’s been said, many times, many ways, Merry Christmas to you. 37

IT’S NO SECRET THAT Atlanta’s Storico Group knows how to dish out unparalleled Italian cuisine. Earlier this year, Yeppa & Co. took the city by storm with its upbeat atmosphere, refreshing cocktails and housemade fare. That’s why Atlantans were intrigued when Pietro Gianni and Stephen Peterson of Storico Group announced the closure of Italian wine bar Storico Vino, ultimately to be replaced with an entirely new concept—a Mexican taqueria named Pachengo’s. “The inspiration behind Pachengo’s is a lively, fresh and fun space taking cues

collaborated with ASD | SKY to transform the once moody wine bar into a bright and friendly neighborhood taqueria. White tiles reflect light shining through the floor-to-ceiling windows, and playful light fixtures complement the restaurant’s signature colors, red and green. Guests will also be charmed by plenty of bar seating as well as verdant views on their expansive outdoor patio. LIZA BRYAN AND husband Randy’s 1940s cottage in the Peachtree Battle neighborhood didn’t exactly ooze charm when their real estate agent first showed them the property. “My agent warned me that the house was in terrible shape,” says Bryan. There were oil stains from a Harley-Davidson in the dining room, the previous owners had been raising cocker spaniels in the basement, and all of their possessions had been tossed to the curb. “She said I would need to have a good imagination,” says Bryan. Thankfully the interior designer had plenty of vision.

Attracted to the home’s historic appeal, 9-foot ceilings, original mantel in the living room and a private, treed backyard that feels more like North Carolina than Atlanta, the couple didn’t hesitate to make the purchase. “The house looked like a little nothing at the time, but I loved that it had potential,” says Bryan. Working with architects Rick Spitzmiller and Bob Norris, the Bryans embarked on a renovation and an addition to suit their needs and serve as a home to their collection of antiques and family heirlooms. “We took the house apart and

The interiors put emphasis on classic, traditional design with much of the furniture and accessories collected over time, and though little has changed over the years outside of rugs and fabrics, the home still carries a fresh appeal. That’s because Bryan takes to heart her own advice for young collectors:

Entertaining Ease above The Bryan’s small-but-task-friendly kitchen is perfect for the two of them, and just large enough for whipping up Christmas morning brunch for their family. Added architectural character comes through in the custom beaded-board island and backsplash. left Bryan decorated her breakfast room in casual Country French style. Corner cupboards display Bryan’s collection of brown and white transferware. A custom burlap tablecloth, vintage fabrics on pillows and iron twig candelabra underscore the relaxed ambience. “Buy the very best that you can afford and you’ll never be sorry. I still have every piece that I ever bought and every heirloom that was handed down to me,” says the designer. Bryan credits the exquisite taste of her great aunt and grandmother for her own appreciation of antique furniture and accessories. “When you grow up around beautiful things and see someone using and enjoying them, it rubs off,” says Bryan. “I spent weekends with them setting their tables with fine china for tea parties while they shared the history and provenance of the

items in their homes. I was fortunate to have family members who taught me the value of things.” Bryan, also a mother and grandmother, is encouraged to think that her own children and grandchildren will be pleased to inherit her furnishings and collections. “Collecting is all about loving beautiful things and wanting to see them every day,” says Bryan. “Over the almost four decades of being a designer, I have learned so much—especially that your home should tell your story.” See Resources, Back of Book. 51

DRAWN TO ITS LUSH setting and classic architecture, Jessie and Andrew Somoza decided to start a new chapter in a 1930s-era Georgian Colonial on a hilly, wooded lot in Buckhead. After becoming acquainted with the home’s charms, quirks and outright problems, they hired architect Ross Piper, builder Stuart Grubb and interior designer Sande Beck, who had designed their former home, to help them make it their own. “They wanted it to feel unique and personal,” says Beck. “Traditional but updated.” In addition to adding new moldings, arches and other bespoke details, Piper and Beck reimagined the floor plan to create more functional spaces and improve the flow between them. In the process, they flipped the location of the living and dining rooms and relocated the kitchen to the other, brighter side of the house. The pair also reconfigured the upstairs plan to create a more spacious primary bathroom. “We made this house what it always wanted to be,” says Piper. The transformation starts outside, where a new portico with classic columns frames the stately white brick home’s front door. While the front foyer is largely unchanged, arched doorways and a fluted, barrel-back 63

Blue accents likewise impart a comfortable cohesion. The formal living room’s walls, millwork and ceiling are covered in a light, high-gloss blue, for example, creating a dramatic, traditional backdrop for a tailored navy sofa accented by patterned upholstery, pillows

and antique dishware. “The mix makes things more interesting and balanced,” says Beck. Indeed, in the new formal dining room, a traditional brass-and-crystal chandelier illuminates a classical wooden table and chairs with new seat fabric that plays off the lavender grasscloth wallcovering—a nod to the wife’s favorite color. “It’s so beautiful and unexpected that it almost takes your breath away,” she says. “It feels inviting.”

White lanterns illuminate the white marble island, which is adorned with millwork that pays homage to a diamond-like motif on the glass flanking the front door. The detail can also be found in the butler’s pantry. “It makes the house flow,” says Beck. As a result of the changes, the owners now enjoy formerly unused spaces, often entertaining guests in the spacious family room, which is conveniently located next to the relocated kitchen, or sitting by the fireplace in a pass-through keeping room with shiplap paneling. “We all worked together and got a great outcome that couldn’t have turned out more beautifully,” says Beck. “It’s welcoming, inviting and very comfortable.” See Resources, Back of Book.

PICTURE THIS: You’re snuggled into 400-thread count Frette sheets in a plush oversize bed at the center of your 820-squarefoot suite, and you can hear a pin drop. Now imagine that room sits on the 11th floor of a high-rise in Midtown Manhattan, a stone’s throw from Central Park. No, it’s not a dream. It’s the reality at the spectacular new Aman New York. Opened in late 2022, the all-suite, 83-key hotel was hotly anticipated with good reason. The neoclassical Crown Building was designed in 1921 by Wetmore and Warren (the duo of Grand Central Station design fame) and served as the first location of MoMA and offices for both Dior and Playboy. Hotel guests enter through a staffed, street-level entrance, but the real welcome comes on the exquisite 14th floor double-height lobby. Rather than a formal check-in process at a desk, you are whisked directly to your sprawling suite. A hallway leads to a bathroom that’s larger than some NYC apartments. The spa-like space features a freestanding soaking tub, walk-in steam and rainfall shower and heated floors. The space connects to the bedroom, though illuminated rice paper screen panels can be drawn for privacy. The bedroom walks the line between spacious and cozy with a glass-enclosed working fireplace, tabletcontrolled everything, a plush window seat and a seating area, perfect for in-room dining. Neutral hues and washi paper art create calming vibes. While no one would blame guests for luxuriating in their suite, there’s much more to enjoy without leaving the building. The 25,000-square-foot spa, generously spread across three floors, is world-class and offers services from the feel-good variety to clinical-grade, assisted by medical professionals. ISTANBUL, TÜRKIYE, IS A CITY with a rich history, having served as the capital of four different empires throughout its long existence. It has a wealth of historic sites and monuments, including the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Topkapi Palace, all offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the city’s storied past and its role in shaping the world. Beautiful, historic monuments and fortifications cohabit gracefully with modern buildings and street art, proving it to be an ideal city for current times. Spanning both Europe and Asia and separated by the Bosphorus Strait there are currently nearly 16 million people in Istanbul (that’s two and a half times the size of NYC). Winding streets and pathways, alleys and waterfront promenades offer glimpses into life in this ancient city, which is astonishingly clean and vibrant. Beside the majestic mosques, with their towering minarets and stunning Byzantine mosaics, the Grand Bazaar, completed in 1730, is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. mind-blowing shopping mecca with 61 covered streets and more than 4,000 shops. It’s great fun to haggle prices with the merchants (which is an art form for them) and you can find just about anything imaginable. Next door is a foodie’s paradise: the Spice Bazaar (aka the Egyptian Bazaar, built in 1664) which sells herbs, spices, caviar, nuts, sweets and more. Visitors may come to Istanbul for the mosques and bazaars, but they leave bewitched by the food. Turkish cuisine is a rich and diverse fusion of flavors, colors and aromas that reflect the country’s geographical location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. It draws inspiration from the Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Balkan regions, resulting in a unique culinary identity that is both familiar and exotic. Case in point: Make your way to a

narrow alley named Dudu Odalari for an adventure in Turkish “street food”— so named because the tiny food shops are lined up on a street, not street food as we know it in the U.S. First stop, Arıoğulları Petek Turşuları—a teeny store, lined floor-to-ceiling with jars of colorful pickles and olives. Next door is Yildiz Sekerleme—a candy store with every confection you can imagine, including several styles of Turkish Delight (both gels and nougats) flavored with pistachios, rosewater, citrus or other natural flavors. There are other shops on this little street, too, including a bakery—go in for a fresh simit, one of Istanbul’s iconic sesame bagel-like rings. The neighborhoods of Istanbul each have unique personalities. A trailblazing creative scene is emerging in the Karaköy neighborhood in Beyoğlu (formerly called Pera), a district north 87

of the old city on the European shore of the Bosphorus. Old buildings in Karaköy have been repurposed into shops, art warehouse-studios and trendy cafes. Adjacent is a large-scale urban redevelopment complex called Galataport. With its waterside promenade and outdoor dining venues, it’s set to become “Istanbul’s new gastronomy neighborhood.” A notable restaurant on Galataport’s waterfront, Muutto Anatolian Tapas Bar, is known for its traditional meze (tapas). Irresistible, not-so-little dishes of köfte (meatballs) and local fish cover the table alongside creative combos of bulgur, hummus, mushrooms, purslane, olives and other regional items. Try to save room for the honeysoaked, pistachio-filled baklava served with a cup of Turkish tea with two or three lumps of sugar. To

Turks, the sweeter the better. Also in Karaköy, occupying the top floor of the Novotel Istanbul Bosphorus is restaurant Mürver, “Through the Live Fire,” where Michelin chef Mevlüt Özkaya sources seasonal products from Anatolia and cooks them using fire: in a wood oven, on a wood grill, hung on an open fire wall or smoked in an intense oven. Imagine Octopus in Ash with Warm Aegean Sumac Salad and Sour Pomegranate and Trakya Kivircik, Slow Fire-Roasted Lamb Shoulder with Smoked Firik (Bulgur) with Spicy Apricot Compote and Salted Yogurt, and you get the picture. Across the Bosphorus, on the Asian side, is Kadiköy, a more residential-feeling neighborhood with its tiny churches, shops and produce markets. A do-not-miss restaurant here is Ciya Sofrasi

which specializes in an assortment of kebabs plus several meat or vegetable main courses, served with traditional pide—a zeppelin-size, puffed-up version of pita. Giant pizza ovens turn out another specialty of the house called lahmacun, a thin Turkish pizza meant to be folded and eaten like a taco. In the Yeniköy district, Araka restaurant has earned a Michelin star for chef Zeynep Pinar Tasdemir. Whitewashed brick and stone walls and avant-garde art make a befitting backdrop for her highly individual style. Standouts are a Warm Spicy Olive Salad with Pumpkin Puree, Za’atar and Fresh Herbs, and a glistening shaved Beetroot over Tabbouleh with Basil Pesto and Feta Cream. For one of the best breakfast buffets in town, check into the four-star Marmara Pera Hotel in Istanbul City Center. The hotel towers over chic galleries and shops, offering panoramic views of the city. Besides a delicious buffet, the hotel is known for its central location, ultra comfortable rooms and friendly staff. Across from the Marmara is a landmark hotel you may recognize from the movies: the Pera Palace Hotel, a Belle Epoque marvel where Agatha Christie is said to have written Murder on the Orient Express in her room, 411.
