WELCOME
FROM THE EDITOR
What I’m loving this month DARLENE’S SUGAR COOKIES Beat together: 3 cups powdered sugar 2 cups butter 2 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon almond extract
indulgences IF I HAD TO SACRIFICE a year of caffeine for the ability to eat an endless amount of holiday treats pain-free this month, I would likely take longer than I should to consider. Now if those treats are my grandmother’s sugar cookies, it’s a no brainer—just look the other way if you see me out and about before 9 a.m.
Add to the above: 5 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons cream of tartar 1/2 teaspoon salt Roll out on a floured surface, approximately 3/16” thick. Cut out and bake at 375° for approximately 8 minutes. Once cool, frost the cookies with a powdered sugar frosting and decorate as desired.
My family’s holiday traditions are endless, but decorating cookies with my Grandma Dar is, to this day, one of my favorites. She’s seemed to perfect her recipe over the years, baking sugar cookies that consistently come out just the right amount of soft with a creamy richness to balance out the sweetness. Her secret ingredient, you may ask? A dash of almond extract—a small addition that makes a world of a difference (apologies, Grandma, for spilling the beans). The secret ingredient to our December issue is, admittedly, not so secret, each page carrying the warmth and excitement of the season with spaces that are perfectly poised and dressed in their holiday

best. In Tuxedo Park, designer Whitney Durham showcases that bold and bright is the ultimate holiday delight by revealing how she decks the halls of her colorful, ultracheerful personal abode (page 52). Nearby, Michelle Doughtie of Schilling & Co. brings the Cotswolds to Atlanta in a festive traditional dwelling inspired by England’s form and function (page 72). Also inside: Joey Butler brings new meaning to “blue Christmas” Atlanta’s mild winters (page 15). What secret sauce creates holiday magic in your home? Whatever it may be, we hope this season brings nothing but celebration, connection, comfort, and joy. Happy holidays, from us and ours to you and yours! Lauren Iverson,

“I decided to blend oldworld charm with fresh, modern elements to keep the ambience both timeless and vibrant.” ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: Oh, what fun! Your holiday soirée embraces Atlanta’s mild winters with a screened-porch setting. Walk us through your design and the inspiration behind it. JOEY BUTLER: The inspiration began with two cherished pieces. First, we discovered an amazing English 19th-century farm table from an antiques dealer in England. It took six months to make its way across the pond, and it was well worth the wait. The second item was my client’s antique crystal glasses, passed down from her grandmother, whose family originates from Catalonia, Spain.
The glasses were a treasured wedding gift. From there, I decided to blend old-world charm with fresh, modern elements to keep the ambience both timeless and vibrant. We spent over a year collecting blue-and-white vintage porcelain china, with each plate and bowl featuring a unique pattern. I then introduced new items, such as colorful place mats, napkins, and glassware from Lucy’s Market. I adore how the dried oranges and splashes of blue add a playful yet elegant twist, creating a refreshing take on traditional holiday decor. 17

“I have my eye on the Misty Triple Candle Holder from The Paris Market in Savannah. My daughter just moved there and I am in love with the store.”
SCENTSUAL
“My signature scent! Mon Paris eau de Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent is a regular ask on my Christmas list.”
AT THE TABLE
“A Loving Table: Creating Memorable Gatherings is a beautiful book about incorporating inherited dinnerware or decorative pieces into modern tablescapes.”
COMFORT & JOY
“The Olivia von Halle Contessa
Niko Slippers are the perfect touch of luxury for your feet with handstitched ostrich feather pom-poms.”
AH&L: Your design takes a less traditional approach with the color scheme of blues and oranges. Tell us your thought process behind this choice. JB: This was inspired by my client’s passion for blue and how whimsical and fun she is. I also wanted to create something that was unexpected, yet classic in nature. There is such a rich history of using dried orange slices at Christmas dating back to the 1800s. Southerners have always loved using dried fruit during the holidays, and who doesn’t love a pop of color? AH&L: Cheers! What beverage are you serving to guests at your holiday party? JB: I will be drinking in the holidays with a Winter Aperol Spritz. My version has a holiday spin featuring cranberry juice 18

and a sprig of rosemary to finish it off—it’s absolutely refreshing and so very festive. AH&L: The season typically brings fond memories of years past. What is your favorite holiday memory or tradition? JB: One of my favorite holiday traditions is seeing the Christmas Spectacular with the Radio City Rockettes in New York or at the Fox Theatre here in Atlanta. From the moment I step into Radio City Music Hall to the final dance number, the entire experience fills me with joy and truly gets me into the Christmas spirit. AH&L: Festive fashion is the most fun. What are you wearing to your holiday parties this year? JB: I absolutely love dressing up for the holidays and have a real passion for fashion and personal style. With so many
events, parties, and gatherings to attend, a festive holiday skirt paired with a chic sweater is always a go-to option for me. The best part about a dressy skirt is its versatility—you can easily dress it up or down depending on the event. AH&L: Holiday entertaining can be stressful. What is your one piece of hard-and-fast entertaining advice that will make any party run smoothly? JB: It’s no surprise, but the key to avoiding holiday stress is always preparation. As a child, I watched my mother create the most stunning tablescapes—something I now love doing myself. She always set everything up well in advance to avoid last-minute stress. Any tasks you can complete early will help minimize the last-minute crazies. 19

Ansley Park
Written by TUCKER BERTA SARKISIAN Illustrated by MEREDITH GILLESPIE
It’s the dichotomous nature of Ansley Park that makes this 120-year-old neighborhood so special. It’s tucked mere steps from the bustling Midtown business district and many backyards have dramatic skyline views, yet it feels secluded and rich with green space. Based on the principles espoused by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the 275-acre neighborhood was intentionally designed so that no home is more than a 10-minute stroll from one of 14 parks. While developer Edwin Ansley’s vision included wide, granite-curb-lined curvilinear streets, pedestrian connectivity has always been a focus and defining characteristic of this historic in-town neighborhood. Ansley Park residents enjoy year-round community programming ranging from dining clubs and poetry readings, to an annual Tour of Homes and Art in the Park festival.
$998 HISTORY Edwin Ansley’s concept for the neighborhood included a social component, leading him to break ground on a 45-acre golf club for the community in 1910, now known as the thriving, private Ansley Golf Club with a five-year waitlist for membership. Additionally, Ansley Park Civic Association (APCA) was founded in 1915 as a social club, and evolved into an organization of engaged citizens committed to protecting the neighborhood. In what would become a defining move for Ansley Park’s destiny, in 1964 the APCA hired renowned urban planner Leon Eplan of Eric Hill Associates to draft a longrange neighborhood plan to uphold the neighborhood’s integrity, while also improving upon it. In 2011, Ansley Park was named one of the 10 Best Neighborhoods in the United States by the American Planning Association, an honor that undoubtedly stemmed from the leadership of Eplan and the people he inspired to continue the preservation of this special enclave. 42

“Ansley Park is a little jewel box in the middle of Atlanta. I admire the historic homes, large old trees, and mature landscaping, plus the beautiful parks with streams and wildlife like owls, hawks, and foxes. It’s the best of both worlds and the location can’t be beat.” —Designer and Ansley Park Resident Don Easterling

IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW
From 1924–1967, 205 The Prado in Ansley Park was home to the Governor’s Mansion and 12 Georgia governors. Developer Edwin Ansley built the “Granite Mansion” for himself in 1910, designed by architect (and fellow Ansley Park resident) A. Ten Eyck Brown. Unfortunately, the house fell into disrepair and was razed in 1969, and a new governor’s residence was built on West Paces Ferry Road.

FUTURE
The neighborhood plan created by Eplan in the 1960s continues to guide the vision to maintain and enhance the historic neighborhood that has prospered amidst 120 years of growth and expansion in the Midtown business district. In November, the APCA launched a new Ansley Park Neighborhood Conservation Study to address a range of issues including traffic, parking, and pedestrian and bicycle safety within and adjacent to the neighborhood, as well as land use and development, preserving vital green spaces and upgrading infrastructure. The study will be submitted to the City in early 2025. “While many of these issues are not new, we do need an updated neighborhood plan that fully addresses current conditions and explores how we can best prepare the neighborhood to face the next 120 years,” says Derrick Brown, current APCA president. 44

Around town with
Naomi Von Habersham DECEMBER IS UPON US. Are you ready for the socializing and entertaining that is to come? I’ve already made a drugstore run to stock up on the medicinal aids that help me get through the holiday season, namely ibuprofen, antacids, and vitamin C tablets to boost my immune system. (Am I the only one who can count on getting sick mid-December?) No matter that I’ve lived through more Decembers than I wish to divulge, I always feel like every holiday season is my first rodeo. Even though I make it a point to stock up ahead of time on liquor, wine, and champagne, I inevitably find myself making a last-minute dash to the package store to pick up a bottle of Grand Marnier or crème de menthe so that I can finish my holiday baking. Why can’t I plan ahead better? Then there is the annual tug-of-war I have with myself over whether I should make seasoned pecans or not. To me, Christmas isn’t Christmas without pecans appearing somewhere in my holiday fare, but their high prices always give me sticker shock. Perhaps I should start searching for recipes that only call for peanuts, which seem to cost—forgive me—peanuts. The holidays also require taking inventory of one’s household supplies. Dripless candles? Check. Freshly laundered and ironed cocktail napkins? Done. A Rigaud Cyprès candle to make my home smell like an Alpine forest? Looks like I’ve got to add that to my lengthy to-do list. And we can’t forget the extensive personal grooming that holiday parties require. Manicures, pedicures, and trips to the colorist to cover up the gray. Red lipstick and fingernail polish, an ample supply of perfume, and the variety of underpinnings that a holiday wardrobe requires. If it sounds like I’m complaining, I’m not. Deep down, I relish the hustle and bustle that comes with the season. So, when you’re stuck in holiday traffic or scrambling to get that last-minute gift, remind yourself that the holidays really are the most wonderful time of the year. Happy Holidays! 47

MOST RESTAURANTS THAT achieve the success of Atlanta’s Umi are content with coasting, but Umi’s dedicated team keeps serving up more. Opened earlier this year and located above the main dining room, M by Tasuku Murakami offers an astounding 18-course omakase dining experience unlike anything else in the city. After the addition of the Murphy Room—Umi’s private dining space— Umi founders Farshid Arshid and Charlie Hendon, along with design partner Tom Dixon, were tasked with transforming the leftover space. “The idea was to use it as a small omakase room, which would allow for chef Tasuku Murakami’s full range of talent,” says Arshid. And showcase his talents it does. “Omakase is truly special because it allows me to connect directly with my guests,” says Murakami. “I love the element of surprise—every dish is a chance to wow them.” With eight guests in the intimate dining room at a time, Murakami tailors each experience to individual preferences. “These interactions and the ability to customize in real-time creates a fun, dynamic atmosphere that I absolutely love,” he says. Growing up in Kyoto, a city renowned for its culinary heritage, Murakami developed a unique outlook and passion for food that shines through and establishes him as a master of his craft. “Rather than the traditional route of building up flavors slowly, I prefer to create contrast 48

DESIGNER WHITNEY DURHAM’s penchant for historic dwellings led her and husband Nathan to a grand 1930s home nestled on over 3 private acres in Buckhead’s Tuxedo Park. While their previous cottage was big on charm, it lacked the space for their two growing boys and two energetic labs. “The cherry on top was this house had undergone a renovation by Norman Askins in the 1990s,” says Durham, noting her appreciation for the revered Atlanta architect. Askins’ significant yet mindful transformation included the addition of a family room, larger kitchen, primary bedroom, and central hallway to better align with the needs of modern living, while still preserving original details such as intricate millwork, multiple fireplaces, and even a dumbwaiter. It was a promising canvas for Durham’s unique vision for the home: Instead of letting the formal architecture dictate a similar type of interior decoration, she juxtaposed it with her fearless and elegant sense of style. It’s a risk that pays off, evident immediately upon entering the home’s foyer, which Durham enveloped in an eye-catching Schumacher wallpaper she’d been eager to use. “It looks like a gallery wall of traditionally framed oil 55

Inspired by the color of the original glass light fixture in the adjacent foyer, designer Whitney Durham wrapped the dining room in a deep plum. Celerie Kemble’s Tortoise Shell wallpaper further dials up the drama.

right While the marble is a new feature, as is the La Cornue range, Durham kept the existing cabinetry, replacing only the fronts and painting them to match the trim. opposite The entryway to Durham’s home office takes on a decidedly softer, more feminine feel with chinoiserie-inspired wallpaper and coral drapery. paintings,” she says, “but as you look more closely, they’re all a little quirky and playful; some of the portraits even have bunny ears and skull faces.” To complement its whimsy, the original millwork and paneling was updated with a deep teal paint color. “When thinking of how to add some youthful personality into the home, I was drawn to a colorful palette of highgloss jewel tones that we ended up using throughout,” recalls Durham. “We painted the entire house from top to
bottom—a fresh coat of paint goes such a long way.” And while a richly saturated purple dining room, golden hallway, dusty pink living room—to name a few—sounds chaotic in theory, the symphony of colors never once feels overwhelming, a credit to Durham’s keen planning. Each of the home’s rooms flow seamlessly into the next, thanks to vibrant hues echoing in adjacent spaces through rugs, accessories, and artwork; ultimately weaving a carefully crafted color story that feels both fresh and luxe. 59

Dappled Delight above A monochromatic backdrop in the breakfast room lets a custom light pendant shine. Underneath, a Bunny Williams Home table holds court. Durham found the Windsor chairs at a flea market and gave them new life with high-gloss black paint and custom cushions featuring Schumacher’s Kinabalu Velvet.
With the rooms’ backdrops complete, Durham was equally intentional with the next layers—antiques and family heirlooms mixing comfortably with more modern flourishes. In the kitchen, for example, Lucite barstools hold court near traditional oil paintings. Similarly, custom lampshades painted by contemporary artist Sally King Benedict adorn lamps resting on the foyer’s antique chest. “Layering a mix of styles feels organic and creates a sense of warmth, which is something I’m always trying to cultivate through design,” says Durham. It’s a sentiment encapsulated even more so during cozy winter holidays, when fresh wreaths and garlands and whimsical bows add an extra layer of magic. “Getting to put my own stamp on this little slice of Atlanta history is really special,” says Durham. “I hope people can feel the joy we poured into this home.” See Resources, Back of Book.

M MICHELLE DOUGHTIE OF Schilling & Co. was hired for this Buckhead home’s initial facelift in 2018, which saw the first design of the five-bedroom, nearly 9,000-squarefoot home emphasized with feminine touches against a traditional background. When Doughtie was tapped again in 2024 for the most recent refresh, it was time to layer in collections and up the pattern ante. The homeowner’s recent trip to the Cotswolds left her enamored by castles and the villages surrounding them, and with a series of guests coming into town, she wanted to make her vision a reality. Doughtie’s result is a timeless setting steeped in deep greens and punctuated with playful trims where an heirloom oil collection is married with vibrant contemporary art. In the family room, Doughtie created a cozy atmosphere with intimate seating arrangements surrounded by the homeowners’ impressive inherited art. “With those dark paintings, we wanted to freshen things up to give a less serious tone,” describes the designer. Emphasizing textures, Doughtie opted for a grasscloth coffee table for a casual yet sophisticated feel, and a sofa covered in velvet and finished with bullion trim.

Nothing is heavy or fussy, but the room feels refined and comfortable. Adjacent to the armoire in the same space is a hidden bourbon bar. In the original floor plan, the powder room was large and felt wasteful. Doughtie borrowed from the bath and a guest closet to create a bar for the couple’s bourbon and wine collections, ultimately using the space more effectively. The naked eye might not notice the panels with hidden hinges when closed, but the family often keeps the space open, showcasing their personalities and panache for entertaining. “We created a little jewel box in there and mirrored the back to make it interesting,” says Doughtie. “I’ve always loved hidden details in older houses, such as a little place to talk on the phone. That’s something we tried to create.” One of Doughtie’s favorite spots is the sunroom. Before the most recent reimagining, the furniture was arranged as a living room but felt too formal for relaxing. “You just didn’t want to stay because it wasn’t as inviting,” says Doughtie. She gave it new life by painting the entire room in a cool mint green, selecting a sectional outfitted in an old-fashioned ticking stripe, and

choosing a now-discontinued fabric for the window treatments. “Even though it’s no longer available, it still looks current, and we essentially decorated everything around those drapes.” Nearby, the kitchen— remodeled in 2018—received a sprucing up with fabric and furniture. “We wanted an English look, so we grounded everything with a dark brown table and paired it with secondhand chairs that we painted and re-covered. They feel storied and collected,” says Doughtie. Throughout the home, color tells the story. “We started with a color palette of greens and blues, and instead of just one universal color, we chose to use a range. In some rooms, it’s on the furniture, and in others, it’s on the drapery, but when you walk through each space, everything feels connected without feeling repetitive.” says Doughtie. The effect is a refreshing overhaul that will remain evergreen for years to come. See Resources, Back of Book.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE in an unfamiliar destination after a long flight, nothing is more comforting than chic, cozy accommodations. Hotel Bella Grande, one of Copenhagen’s newest design-forward hotels, is just such a place. Motivated by Scandinavian Airlines’ new direct flight connecting Atlanta with the Danish capital, I happily flew the nine hours overnight and took the ultraefficient Metro from the airport to the City Hall Square stop, a five-minute walk from the property. The hotel is the second lodging offering from Copenhagen Food Collective (Cofoco) that also owns and operates 18 unique restaurants around the city. The group’s love of Italian culture is evident: a geometric marble floor graces the lobby, vintage framed scarves become large-scale art in the lounge, and enormous coffee table books pay homage to Italian designers. The five-story building, built in 1899, underwent a complete renovation to open as a 109-room and suite hotel in April 2024. I accepted a brass key with a scarlet tassel and headed to my room. Gold swirls and floral motifs, reminiscent of Versace barocco designs, float on the black carpets lining the halls of guest floors. Inside my home for the next few days, I 88

found that the Tonen Agency, led by principals Malene Bech-Pedersen and Mette Bonavent, had infused the space with a blend of contemporary and vintage style. Muted shades of cream, white, and burgundy with gold accents create an instant sense of glamour. The room’s centerpiece, a bed with a waveshaped velvet headboard, is clad in a plush white duvet, over which presides a pumpkin-shaped Oi Soi Oi silk shade light fixture. Metallic bedside lamps by Tom Dixon add soft lighting, and a sleek dressing table is both functional and stylish. It’s the kind of room that makes weary travelers feel instantly at ease. If the guest rooms are muted, the hotel’s elegant Italian restaurant, Donna, is anything but. Feminine and romantic, the dining room features glossy red ceilings and bubblegum pink walls, blood-red sofas, candlelit tables, and pink curtains framing floor-to-ceiling windows. Additional seating spills over into the botanical-filled five-story atrium space in the center of the hotel where a checkered marble floor is done in terracotta and cream and banquettes are festooned in floral brocade. Either space is an Instagrammer’s dream. The food matches the vibe: Think focaccia with whipped ricotta, super-fresh salads, and handmade pastas alongside picture-perfect cocktails. While travelers can’t miss iconic Copenhagen sights such as Tivoli Gardens, the crown jewels at Rosenborg Castle, colorful row houses lining the canal at Nyhavn, and the royal residence at Amalienborg Palace, the charming Hotel Bella Grande adds another compelling reason to visit. hotelbellagrande.com 89

COOL IN CALIFORNIA Written by LAUREN IVERSON
IF CITIES COULD BE epitomized by feelings, California’s sunny Santa Barbara would be pure bliss. Cool breezes (Santa Barbara summers sit in the mid- to upper-70s) and the picturesque Santa Ynez Mountains greet you as you leave the airport, and a Spanish-Colonial skyline comes into view as you head toward your accommodations—all of which helped coin the city “The American Riviera.” And if that was tested based on the Hollywood stars that reside there—Oprah, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Katy Perry, to name a few—it’s fair to say Santa Barbara lives up to the hype. With Delta’s new direct-from-Atlanta flight launched this summer, there’s no better time to plan a visit. Start your stay by checking into the Hideaway Santa Barbara. A Kirkwood Collection property, the boutique hotel is conveniently located three blocks from the beach, six blocks from the vibrant Funk Zone neighborhood, and a leisurely stroll to bustling Downtown Santa Barbara or the up-and-coming ARTS District, all prime locales for art, culture, and history. 90
With breezy beaches and an air of laid-back elegance, there’s a reason why people are flocking to SANTA BARBARA A robust wine-destination, visitors can quench their thirst at one of many tasting rooms located throughout the city. In the Presidio neighborhood, pop into Jamie Slone Wines for a tasting and chat with owners Jamie and Kym, who live part-time in Atlanta and are fast friends to all who visit. Just south of Downtown, grab lunch at Field + Fort, where ingredients are fresh and dishes colorful, then walk off your meal by exploring Summerland. The charming area is a design-lover’s dream with open-air antique shops and quaint boutiques. Later, head up to Belmond’s hilltop El Encanto, where the Botanica Afternoon Tea Experience is playful yet luxurious with customblended teas that are inspired by astrological sun signs, plus savory and sweet seasonal bites. Outdoor enthusiasts will rejoice in the countless gardens, hikes, and lookouts to explore. Pro tip: For the best experience, choose a hotel in ROME’s sweet spot Written by GINA CHRISTMAN
ROME—THE ETERNAL City. In this living, breathing museum where every cobblestone has a story to tell, your hotel’s location isn’t just important; it’s everything. And, to truly experience Rome, you need to walk its streets. The perfectly located Hotel de Russie, the Roman jewel of the Rocco Forte Hotels, is without a doubt among the most elegant hotels in the luxury sector in Rome, providing front-row access to Rome’s greatest hits. Situated along the Via del Babuino, just off the Piazza del Popolo and steps from Via del Corso, the Hotel de Russie is in a central position amid the most significant sites and monuments, and you won’t find better shopping or 92

people-watching anywhere in the city. At the hotel’s heart lies its crowning jewel: the Secret Garden, designed by architect Giuseppe Valadier in the 1820s. Situated at the foot of the Pincian Hill and the marvelous Villa Borghese, the garden was conceived in the form of open-air architecture enriched with never-ending botanical scents and colors. To experience it up close, indulge in a leisurely lunch or dinner en plein air in the hotel’s restaurant Le Jardin de Russie. For an alternative vantage point, consider Rocco Forte’s Hotel de la Ville. Perched on Via Sistina, it overlooks the iconic Spanish Steps and Trinità dei Monti. Situated at the threshold

of Villa Borghese gardens and mere steps from renowned monuments and exclusive shopping on Via dei Condotti, it’s another ideal base for exploring Rome on foot. The bright, spacious interiors of both hotels evoke a sense of belonging to their surroundings thanks to architect Tommaso Ziffer and the skillful selection of furnishings and objects by Olga Polizzi, design director for Rocco Forte Hotels. Her design style creates a “home feeling” that offers a sophisticated atmosphere that matches Rome’s timeless charm. Further enhancing the experience, both properties feature the Irene Forte Spa, which showcases the eponymous Irene Forte product line (you’ll also get to sample these products in your room as part of an exclusive amenity package). The line promotes well-researched concepts such as applying a Mediterranean
diet to the skin using ingredients from the agricultural estate gardens at Verdura Resort, Rocco Forte Hotels’ property in Sciacca, Sicily. Choosing either of these hotels means you’re not just visiting Rome—you’re living it. You’re waking up to the sounds of church bells and Vespas, stepping out onto streets that emperors once walked, and ending your day with a Negroni at Hotel de la Ville’s Cielo Terrace Bar, watching the sun set over a cityscape that’s captivated hearts for millennia. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it can’t be fully experienced in one either. The real joy of Rome often lies in the unexpected: a stumbled upon hidden piazza, or a conversation struck up over a glass of wine with locals. So, while you tick off the must-sees, leave room for spontaneity. Lace up your shoes, and let the city reveal its secrets at your own pace. roccofortehotels.com

“My mom’s gift wrapping talents are legendary, and she instilled in me the love of beautiful wrapping paper, ribbon, gift tags, gift toppers, and lots of double-stick tape! I put on the Peanuts Christmas special (a tradition), A Christmas Story, or podcast in the background while wrapping gifts.”

ultimate gift
“The best Christmas gift hands down was our fur baby, Oliver, that Santa brought our kids on Christmas morning some years ago. When they came downstairs, Oliver ran out from around the corner with jingle bells on; the kids burst into tears of joy.”

“Each season my kids insist on getting in the car together and driving around to different Atlanta neighborhoods to admire the festive lights. We started the tradition when they were babies, and it’s one we still love to this day.”
