A FRIEND RECENTLY GIFTED ME a pair of beautiful Ginori 1745 soy sauce cups. I immediately crafted my weekly dinner menu around them, and when not in use, they sit pridefully on my kitchen’s open shelving, as they deserve more than to be tucked away in a cabinet. Now, I never imagined that I would form an attachment to such small pieces of dishware, but these soy sauce cups represent a larger conclusion: The smallest joys of home can sometimes offer the greatest excitement. In our February issue we share in this sentiment with highlights from our 2022 Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse (page 50), where thoughtful detail was put into every square inch of the home—visible or not. Town at Trilith is set to open a boutique hotel early next year.

Wide-open spaces and multifaceted, flexible rooms show luxury homeowners’ desire for practicality. Clients continue to seek less formal dining rooms, says HARRISON DESIGN’s principal architect BULENT BAYDAR. “What used to be more of a breakfast room is now becoming more of a multiuse dining room,” he says. “It’s usually still a separate space from the kitchen, but connected and can be opened up.” Colors are also making a comeback. “There is a clear shift from all-white or all-neutral color palettes in the kitchen to blending in bold pops of color, particularly earth tones or deep, rich shades of blue or green” through cabinetry, islands or backsplash, says JENNI BONURA, president and CEO of HARRY NORMAN, REALTORS. Baydar and Bonura also see a growing preference for

Naomi Von Habersham I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, but I think February is the gloomiest month of the year. Not only do we have to deal with Valentine’s Day—as a single person, I think the holiday is much ado about nothing—but the weather is cold and dreary, which means I’ve been spending far more time cocooning indoors than I care to admit. But there has been a bright side to being cooped up at home, which is that I have come to really appreciate the fact that as lovely as a home’s decor may be, it’s not the only thing that makes a home inviting. As much as I love the fabrics, rugs, antiques and lacquered walls in my home, it wouldn’t be nearly as livable if it weren’t for certain practical, and completely unsexy, items. At the moment, thanks to the frightful weather outside, I’m relying on my least attractive possession to make my home a veritable hot spot: a portable space heater. Essentially an aluminum box made to look like a mini fireplace with simulated flames, my space heater might be tacky looking, but it’s definitely the best $50 I ever spent. Plus, what’s the good of having a nicely decorated room if it’s too cold and drafty to enjoy? Something else that has enhanced my home immeasurably over the last few months is LED light bulbs. I’m only a recent convert, but now that I’ve switched, I could kick myself for having waited so long. Not only do the bulbs cast a nice, warm glow (that is, only if you’re using the soft white variety), they’ve made my life a lot easier now that I’m no longer having to make weekly bulb runs to the hardware store. Admittedly, none of what I’ve called out is exciting or glamorous, and I doubt that anyone would swoon over light bulbs the way some of us do when we see a gorgeous cotton chintz. But for all of the style and beauty that good design brings to our homes, it’s also the little things that help to make homelife enticing.

STOCKED WITH WINE, LOCAL condiments, to-go meals and a variety of luxury cheeses for purchase, Capella Cheese made its debut to the Metro area just last summer. Situated inside Armour Yards, the modern delicatessen is a hub for unique, flavorful fixings. At the helm is owner Raymond Hook, an Atlanta transplant who brings over 30 years of global sourcing experience to the shop. “I began my career at a restaurant with a cheese counter owned by my family in 1984,” says Hook. “I have worked with cheese and specialty food ever since.” Hook also has a background in food journalism, penning his own cheese column for five years. As guests make their way inside Hook’s latest establishment, a large refrigerator showcasing various cheeses of all shapes and sizes takes center stage. “We are a cutto-order shop—no piles of precut cheese wrapped in plastic waiting around to be bought,” says Hook.

“We let customers try the cheese first to see if they like it and have knowledgeable cheesemongers to help guide them.” All of Capella’s domestic products are locally sourced with freshness and quality at the forefront. Their imported cheeses hail from companies who have been in the business for decades, like the Parra family who own a biodynamic farm in Spain. After 50 successful years of the Cathedral Antiques Show (and over $5 million donated to Atlanta-area charitable organizations), the Episcopal Church Women of the Cathedral of St. Philip are thrilled to begin our next chapter. Cathedral Giving By Design is a two-day event celebrating the joy of home and hospitality and benefiting a worthy, local organization. With all net proceeds from the event going directly to the beneficiary, we are excited to announce that the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence (WRCDV) will be our 2023 recipient. Founded in 1985, WRCDV provides compassionate services to survivors of domestic violence and their children. Through emergency and transitional housing, crisis assistance, advocacy, education and prevention, WRCDV serves more than 5,000 survivors in the Atlanta area each year. The 2023 event will kick off with a Friday night Welcome Home Party—including an evening of cocktails, live auction and music provided by Johnny Utah. On Saturday morning Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Editor-inChief Lauren Iverson welcomes Clary Bosbyshell, Christina Dandar (The Potted Boxwood), Brandon Ingram and Janie Molster for a panel titled Beyond the Front Door:Trends in Decorating, Lifestyle and Entertaining. Following the panel, we are thrilled to offer a live and virtual Tour of Homes. Three stunning Atlanta homes will be available to tour in person, while you can also take a virtual stroll through three homes located in Cashiers, Lake Rabun and Birmingham.You will hear and see fantastic details about these houses as well as the decor. Commentary from the homeowners, architects and designers make this an afternoon you will not want to miss. Since we announced WRCDV as our beneficiary last April, we have been inspired by women who have reached out to tell us their own experience with domestic violence, or that of a friend or family member. We continue to hear tragic stories in the news and learn about DV’s prevalence, regardless of age, race and income. More than ever, we are dedicated to supporting WRCDV in their hands-on mission of saving lives and creating a world in which domestic violence no longer exists. This inaugural event has been a labor of love and could not be possible without our amazing committee. The Cathedral of St. Philip is a special place that has a long history of coming together in service of the Atlanta community. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of so many parishioners who have given their time and talent to make this event a success. A special thank you to our honorary chair Mary Mercer, Dean Candler and the Cathedral Clergy and Staff for their support and encouragement.

Since then, some of the wise and caring women of the Cathedral took time to discern the next incarnation of this annual and generous outreach effort. Thank you Kathryn Howell and Andi O’Bryan for shepherding the first Cathedral Giving by Design with amazing grace, excellence and hospitality. I remind guests that the Cathedral of St. Philip is a beautiful and sacred space, but that we are especially a vibrant church community. St. Philip’s Church was established in 1847 as the first Episcopal Church in Atlanta; we became a Cathedral Church in 1904 and moved to our present location here in Buckhead in 1932. We are grateful to have grown tremendously since then. We grow because people love serving God here! I am thrilled that the outreach proceeds this year are designated for the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence, whose mission is to create a society in which domestic violence no longer exists. Our gifts this year will go to support their vision of a community center for families impacted by domestic violence, and to expand their violence-prevention work with children. Again, I sincerely thank Kathryn Howell and Andi O’Bryan for their outstanding and faithful leadership. As co-chairs, they have organized and worked with hundreds of volunteers in creating this complex event. I also thank Mary Mercer, the Honorary Chair of this year’s Cathedral Giving By Design. Mary Mercer was confirmed at the Cathedral of St. Philip on Easter Eve in 1994 by Frank Allan and has served with great dedication and energy in innumerable ways ever since—distinguishing herself as a faithful servant leader both within and beyond the parish. Mary began volunteering with altar guild in 2002 and was asked to head up that ministry for then-new St. Mary’s Chapel, providing daily weekday Eucharist with a healing service on Fridays. She now heads the altar guild for the Cathedral as a whole. “One of my greatest gifts has been serving on the altar guild for over 20 years,” says Mercer. “It is truly a ministry of giving.” Also drawn to fellowship, she began volunteering with the Cathedral Antiques Show in 2007 and took on the job of Chair in 2010. “One of my favorite parts of the show that year was the Tour of Homes that featured the wonderful renovation of Bishop Judson Child’s home,” says Mercer. “I am so glad Cathedral Giving by Design will carry on that event.” Since 2010, Mary has served as President of Episcopal Church Women, as a member of the Cathedral Chapter Class of 2013 and Vice President of Friends of Cathedral Music Board. She has also served on the Funeral Guild and is a member of St. Anne’s Guild. A graduate of the University of South Carolina with a Master’s degree in education from Georgia State University, Mary taught middle school for 30 years. Since her retirement, she has become particularly passionate about addressing the challenges facing the homeless, incarcerated women as well as women and children who have been abused and exploited. In April of 2017, along with parishioners John Beane, Nell Long and Canon Cathy Zappa, Mary helped establish the Cathedral’s Prison Ministry. “Our primary focus is helping the women at Arrendale State Prison navigate the re-entry process by providing supportive relationships and skills needed to return to their communities,” says Mercer. Mary and others also work with the Children’s Center at the prison, providing volunteers, food and support each month for mothers with visiting children. When asked about this year’s beneficiary, Mercer said, “It is my hope that you will embrace this organization and join me in supporting WRCDV either as a sponsor or a patron of Cathedral Giving by Design. Please help us meet the needs of the battered women and children in our community.” Cathedral Giving by Design is so excited to have Mary Mercer as its 2023 Honorary Chair—she is such a remarkable parishioner and dedicated volunteer.

to meet the immediate and long-term needs of the diverse community of battered women and their children with programs that promote safety, compassion, connection, advocacy and prevention. WRCDV provides compassionate services to survivors of domestic violence and their children. We help families improve their safety and form connections, which serve as an essential support system. Our advocacy for survivors of domestic violence works to change the culture that allows abuse to thrive. That advocacy, coupled with our powerful work with children, facilitates prevention and ending domestic violence altogether.

HISTORY

In June of 1985, Gwendolyn Ann Turnbough was working with the DeKalb County District Attorney to protect herself from an abusive ex-husband. Upon his release from jail, her former husband immediately tracked her down. One morning as she was leaving for work, he shot and killed her in the presence of their 11-year-old son. That same month, Commissioner Sherry Schulman established the DeKalb County Domestic Violence Task Force to investigate the issue in the county. After several months of study, the Task Force determined a need for additional domestic violence resources, system changes and a greater emphasis on community education. To meet that need, the county granted $10,000 to create a victim service agency and the Women’s Resource Center was born. Natasha Trethewey, Gwendolyn’s daughter, later grew up to be a Pulitzer Prize winner who remains a passionate supporter of our work.

WRCDV is thrilled to partner with Cathedral Giving By Design to support our vision of a community center for families impacted by domestic violence. The establishment of this center will allow us to expand our violence-prevention work with children. One in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence trauma each year and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to the violence. WRCDV works directly with those children in the Atlanta area to ensure they receive the help they need to recover from trauma and learn new skills to build resiliency and form healthy relationships. CLARY BOSBYSHELL Atlanta-based designer Clary Bosbyshell grew up in the world of design and developed her eye for aesthetics at a young age. A University of Georgia graduate who has studied design in Cortona, Italy, Clary spent two years in the world of fashion merchandising further honing her eye for smart and stylish design. She joined Margaux Interiors Limited in 2009 where she worked for 10 years before opening her own firm in 2019. CLASSIC REVIVAL

Nestled on a lovely street in Buckhead, this amazing home is a true gem. The house was built in 1992. The current homeowner bought the house in 2020 and made some minor decorative changes with the help of Mike Hammersmith. The changes included reworking the family room fireplace for TV placement, putting in the black and white tile in the front hall and made it home. The flow and ease of living along with the light and well-defined spaces that flow easily makes entertaining easy for adults and kids. The talented Caroline Willis Interiors made it a comfortable family home that still reflects the homeowners’ edited style. The house is full of pieces that are meaningful to the homeowners such as family antiques, art, photos, books and collections of art, some inherited, many from local Atlanta galleries and some works by good friends. Clinton Cenac and Julian Philips have maintained and created a backyard that consists of a covered screened-in porch that overlooks the pool. WOODLAND COTTAGE

This charming Clem Ford, Tuxedo Park traditional home was built in 1958 and updated in 2019 by T. Blake Segars, Ben Dailey & Sons and Helen Davis Designs to meet the needs of a busy family with three boys. The back porch serves as a family room and a newly renovated kitchen and breakfast room are perfect locales for entertaining. Outside, Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture and Design did a complete overhaul of the backyard and garden. In addition, the newly updated upstairs recreation room made the homeowners’ dream of having all three boys together a reality.

BROOKHAVEN CHARMER

This stunning home located in the historic Brookhaven neighborhood was built in 1929 and was updated by T. Blake Segars, Cullens and Co., and Lauren McDaniel Interiors in 2019 to meet the family’s needs. As soon at the current owners walked into the house, they knew that it was something special. They relocated the kitchen to make it the hub of the house. They also added a scullery and mudroom, added a bedroom and baths upstairs and reconﬁgured the upstairs to add a laundry room. Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture and Design designed the front landscape and elevations.

Built in 2014, renowned architect James Carter designed his brick Georgian home in the Mountain Brook neighborhood of Birmingham with his personal collections and love of books in mind. Originally from Monroeville, Alabama, Carter explains that the home has become a place to house his collections of things from travel and work since his days in college. Throughout the home, including the octagonal dining room, stairway, reception hall and primary bedroom, Carter’s favorite books fill the cases with warmth and personality. Carter’s favorite room is the library, where he spends most of his time. The room, paneled in antique white oak and complete with French doors that provide a peek of the meticulously landscaped back garden is “elegant, yet still cozy.” Carter collaborated with Norman Kent Johnson on the landscape design, as well as Jane Hoke Bynum on the interiors.

CASHIERS

Bought in February of 2021, this cozy clapboard-style home is one of the first homes built in the Mountaintop development in Cashiers. Designed by D. Stanley Dixon Architect of Atlanta, the portico, lattice work and stone chimneys give the abode a New England feel. Looking toward the golf course and mountains, the design takes into consideration the angles of the sun to give the house the perfect light. The gorgeous green front door sets itself apart from the dark charcoal brown color of the rest of the house. As you open the front door, you are greeted with a view looking directly through the house at the golf course and beyond. The outdoor mountain feel is reflected in the finishes of interiors. A classic kitchen opens directly to the beautiful covered porch, where there is additional place for dining, living and seating by a fireplace.

LAKE RABUN

Originally built in 1997 by architect Stuart Alston, this charming Lake Rabun home was purchased and renovated by the current owner, Jason Moattar, in 2017. Born and raised in Atlanta, Moattar says he never knew how much he loved the outdoors until he bought the home. “I love the house and its position on the lake,” says Moattar. “Being set in the beginning of the narrows, we are on a peak and see nothing really across the lake or on either side.” In addition to painting the interior and exterior of the home and boat house, Moattar fully renovated two bathrooms, the kitchen and added a functional bar. Carefully selected art graces every room, as well as perfectly placed rugs from Moattar. Favorite spaces include a classic screened-in porch with a bed swing, as well as a cozy lower level. LIVING ROOM Janie Wilburn, The Jane Group A response to the living room’s soaring ceilings and classical architecture detailing, interior designer Janie Wilburn furnished the space with uncommon, one-ofa-kind antiques alongside contemporary pieces with a nod to classic forms. “The architecture of that room demanded something commanding,” she says. An antique Oushak rug inspired the muted orange and teal hues peppered throughout the space. Colorful ocelot-patterned pillows, for example, pop against the mushroom-colored armchairs alongside the fireplace. Solid orange and teal pillows likewise enliven a tailored alpaca sofa underneath a large-scale abstract painting. “It’s a youthful, energetic space that’s also beautiful,” says Wilburn. Indeed, composed of Murano glass discs with a shagreen-like finish, a spherical chandelier lends the space a sense of modernity despite the many rich wooden antiques, which include an Italian console, occasional tables and an Empire secretary. “This space is incredibly sophisticated and rich, but there’s a lightness and brightness that’s a bit ethereal,” she says. “It feels fresh, cohesive and balanced.” —Tate Gunnerson 53

An extension of the open-concept kitchen, the warm, inviting keeping space was conceived for entertaining and family gatherings. Taking her cue from the room’s architecture, Kati Hardwick of B.D. Jeffries custom-designed a large yet airy rattan chandelier to complement the soaring ceiling, whose Italian plaster finish also inspired the room’s organic-looking furniture and accessories, such as a sunbleached burlwood coffee table and an antique wooden trough repurposed as a planter. Likewise, the room’s pair of rounded wingback chairs and a curved sofa were chosen with the ceiling’s dramatic arch in mind. Working with a neutral color palette that highlights the greenery outside the window, Hardwick repeated the keeping room’s earthy, textured design concept in the hallway and mudroom, where a stone bench and antique runner are joined by a striking jar sculpture and mixed-media painting. “I’ve always felt like neutrals are so inviting,” says Hardwick. “I wanted a space that was warm but still allowed you to appreciate the natural surrounds.” —Jennifer Boles 55

Boldly mounted in front of the large arched window, a painted range hood with nickel strapping adds a contemporary flair to the traditional English-inspired kitchen designed by Marcel Olariu of Kingdom Woodworks and decorated by Lauren Davenport Imber of Davenport Designs, Ltd. Flanked by copper gas lanterns, “It’s very cozy and warm,” says Davenport Imber, who also served as the home’s interior specifications designer. Deferring to the white Venetian plastercovered barrel-vaulted ceiling, the designers selected a complementary white color for the furniture-like cabinets, two of which have walnut drawers. “It’s a rich kind of detail that’s very European,” says Olariu, noting that the same applies to the cabinetry’s thick door frames and high toe kick. One of many black accents throughout, a modern chandelier casts glowing pools of light on the reflective Venetian plaster overhead. An abstract painting likewise contrasts the more traditional influences in the breakfast room, where a custom bench with a scalloped edge anchors an antique French wine table surrounded by Queen Anne chairs. “The push-pull of the old world and the new world creates warmth, depth and comfort,” says Davenport Imber. “There’s a moment for everyone.” —Tate Gunnerson

Dreaming in Color SCULLERY, PANTRY & POWDER ROOM Kingdom Woodworks & Amber Guyton, Blessed Little Bungalow Lacquered in a rich shade of teal, a formal display cabinet with polished nickel Crémone Bolt latches lends a sense of grandeur to the butler’s pantry while beautifully coordinating with the lighter blue, decidedly less formal cabinetry in the adjacent scullery. “It’s rooted in historical values but streamlined to match today’s transitional style,” says designer Marcel Olariu of Kingdom Woodworks. Adding a youthful flair, designer Amber Guyton covered the ceiling in both spaces with a vibrant multicolored wallcovering by Lindsay Cowles. “It’s truly a work of art,” she says. “Sculleries are often described as the ‘dirty kitchen,’ however, this space is anything but.” That energy likewise infuses the nearby powder room, where, painted in a powerful shade of fuschia, the ceiling and baseboards play off a boisterously colorful patterned wallcovering inspired by the painted Victorian and Italianate row homes that Guyton admired while living in San Francisco. “It’s inspiring and motivating,” she says. “The powder room is a perfect place to go big or go home.” —Tate Gunnerson

Enhanced by the reflective Venetian plaster-covered ceiling, a cream embroidered linen wall treatment establishes a visually stimulating milieu in the bright and spacious formal dining room. “Linen is a little more casual, but the embroidery adds some interesting texture that’s unexpected,” says interior designer Lauren DeLoach. The designer used the same textural fabric for the drapery trim, its scallop-like edge framing a tailored slipcovered bench alongside an antique Spanish dining table and chairs. “The mix is a bit more relatable and very comfortable,” she says. “I strive for that kind of push and pull.” Inspired by the built-in wine cabinet, DeLoach created a second seating area on the other side of the room. There, a pair of tall antique chairs float in front of an enfilade paired with an intricately carved and gilded mirror— an ideal spot for the future owners to enjoy a glass of wine. “This room is cozy, like a hug,” she says. “Everywhere you look, there’s something interesting for your eye to rest on.” —Tate Gunnerson

Artistically Inclined FOYER & HALLWAY Dan Belman & Randy Korando, Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts Using the home’s open, airy layout as their guide, Dan Belman and Randy Korando of Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts took a minimalist approach when designing the foyer and firstfloor hallway. “As the foyer was designed to be an open, light-filled space, we felt it should be an open, lightly decorated space as well,” says Korando. Working with a neutral color palette of white and off-white that amplifies the room’s natural light, the designer assembled a few choice pieces for the space, namely, a soft-colored rug, pale wood center table and a sparkling chandelier that adds a dazzling touch. In the adjoining hallway, furnishings are also quietly graceful and include a bleached-wood chest, gilt mirror, and a charming plaster bust, which altogether create a neutral backdrop for the space’s main attraction: large, abstract paintings in shades ranging from vivid oranges and greens to dark, moody hues. Says Korando, “Without question, we wanted the incredible and bold original artworks to be the star of the show.” —Jennifer Boles 65

Located off of the foyer, the library was designed to be dual-purpose: a work space by day and lounge by night, according to the designer. “I wanted a place that was lovely and inviting during the day, where you could do work, and then turn moody and sexy in the evening to enjoy a nightcap.” Because the space lacks windows, Jessica Bradley gave the room its own unique vista by choosing a dynamic blush, blue and green wallcovering, whose large-scaled pattern resembles handpainted leaves. To help marry the contemporary wallcovering with the rustic, reclaimed-wood ceiling, the designer added a pair of leather lounge chairs and a burlwood desk, which is joined by a sleek metal chair. A bleached-wood chest and paneled mirror lead the way to the adjacent hallway, where blush-and-cream wallpaper, a pale blue Louis XVIstyle commode and an Oushak runner repeat the colors used in the library. —Jennifer Boles

An antique Persian rug in shades of red, blue and cream sets the stage for the rich, layered milieu in the spacious primary bedroom, which has a soaring barrel-vaulted ceiling and a dramatic arched window overlooking the backyard. “The rug is celebratory and kind of explosive,” she says. “It almost looks like it’s on fire.” Complemented by pops of champagne in the form of draperies, sumptuous bedding and a comfy sofa with a fringe detail, sage green walls create a soothing backdrop for a mélange of large-scale antiques that hold their own against the room’s lofty dimensions. “It’s elegant yet warm and cozy,” explains McLean. Artistic Delight PRIMARY BATHROOM & HIS-AND-HER CLOSETS Sande Beck, Sande Beck Design

The craftsmanship of the elongated custom vanity by Kingdom Woodworks and sumptuous shower and tub backdrop entices guests to linger in the primary bathroom. In the shower, large-format Ancient Marble porcelain in a glossy finish is book-matched four ways to show different use of the pattern, while a dramatic groin-vault ceiling enhances the grandness of the space. To not distract from the bathroom’s wow-factor, designer Sande Beck implemented textured accessorizing, seen in wicker, mercury glass, modern sculptures and embroidered towels. The bespoke primary bathroom’s neutral tones of browns and gray inspired Beck to bring bursts of color into the closets that bookend the space. “Pink and green are two of my favorite colors,” says Beck. A hot pink ceiling, raspberry velvet pillows and abstract art accentuates the happy in “her” closet, where Schumacher’s Citronier fabric adorns the cornice, window seat and pillows. In “his” closet, Schumacher’s Lotus Garden pattern evokes the feel of a hunting lodge, while patterned ottomans with fringe detailing and a bright green ceiling capture a warm and earthy feel. —Lori Johnston

Beautiful Blues STAIR HALL, UPSTAIRS LAUNDRY & HALLWAY Crystal Corder, Crystal Corder Interiors

Responsible for three connecting spaces, designer Crystal Corder chose an often overlooked room for the starting point of her design: the laundry room, which she lavished in appealing shades of blue, including textured wallpaper, painted cabinetry designed by Kingdom Woodworks and a bird-print fabric window shade. Beginning just off the foyer and carrying upstairs to the second-floor landing and hallway, Corder “really wanted the spaces to feel cohesive, so I pulled in varying textures and shades of blue that are accented with neutrals.” A metal side table and blackwood armchairs are partnered with blue accents, seen in upholstery, paintings and a wall display of ceramic flowers that leads to the neighboring hallway, where a gallery-style assemblage of artwork gives the space a curated look. Culminating at the end of the hall, a piece of concrete art and a pair of bold charcoal black stools lend authority to the walkway. —Jennifer Boles

The upstairs lounge exposed guests to Forbes Masters’ Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles showhouse debut, and, located right at the top of the stairs, what better place for the designers to see visceral reactions to their expression of feminine freedom and joy. “It was like an aha moment,” says Tavia Forbes. “Some said it felt like a spiritual space.” The Arte wallcovering in garnets, violets and pinks presents a tasteful depiction of women, says Monet Masters. Designing for “sophisticated women who are quick-witted, ambitious and love to laugh,” they combined modern selections, such as opulent, blush wingback chairs, chrome studded pillows, a white silk shag rug and antiques like the stately British cabinet. Furnishings and artwork selections balance sensuality and softness that “follow the curves of a woman’s body,” says Masters, with substance and intention like the women they honor. Terracotta African busts were a serendipitous find and the duo selected the whimsical arboreal chandeliers for the barrel-vault ceiling. “It feels like it showcased our eclectic nature and how we love to juxtapose different time periods, design styles and curation through art,” says Forbes. —Lori Johnston 77

One of the space’s many verdant hues, light blue-green walls establish a soothing backdrop for a pleasing mix of furnishings, textiles and artwork in the guest bedroom suite. “The different shades create a lot of depth and interest,” says designer Chris Holt. “I wanted the room to be calm and serene.” However, there are moments of drama: The interior of the deep tray ceiling is covered with a chartreuse grasscloth that plays off the polished cotton draperies. And flanked by mismatched whitewashed oak side tables, a white canopy bed makes a striking focal point. “Waking up in a canopy bed is enveloping, cozy and comforting,” he explains. The palette flows into the en suite bathroom, where a dark green floral wallcovering complements the handsome white vanity and light stone countertop. “This suite is approachable, tasteful, light and fresh,” says Holt. “A place where people will want to relax and hang out.” —Tate Gunnerson

Ancient Inspiration BEDROOM & BATH Evan Millard, millárd Accented by a custom three-dimensional ceiling border, a light fabric wallcovering with an abstracted Greek column pattern is just one of many Grecian touches that interior designer Evan Millard incorporated into the light-filled bedroom suite. A trio of plaster figurative sculptures by Alan LeQuire, for example, create a focal point over the bed. And, referencing Greece’s Mediterranean climate, a brass palmshaped floor lamp adds a touch of whimsy. “There are lots of layers, but it’s not stuffy or overwhelming,” says Millard, pointing to the books and objets d’art displayed behind the curio cabinet’s brass-framed glass doors. Indeed, pops of emerald, coral and a soft pale pink punctuate the neutral envelope, which is rendered in multiple shades of white and cream. A subtle nod to the jewel tones, a faceted mirror flanked by contemporary sconces elevates the en suite bathroom, which includes a Grecian urn filled with a lively mix of flowers. “This is a wonderful, warm and welcoming jewel box-like space,” says Millard. “It’s like a breath of fresh air.” —Tate Gunnerson

Travel and memory-making drove the design narrative of a guest bedroom by Whitney Tingle, Madi Gray and Leigh Ann Harris of Christopher Collection, where the trio pictured a young adult retreating to relax in upon returning home or visiting relatives for the holidays. The wallcovering’s modern coloration of dark teal, rust, persimmon, brighter blues and a hint of pink was their starting point, while the green-painted ceiling and an Arteriors gold chandelier are a dramatic backdrop to the luxuriously appointed poster bed. Textures like the bed’s nubby upholstery, faux-fur pillows, gray velvet chairs and fringed leather stools are chic and cozy. To curate a traditional and modern space, the clean lines of geometric embroidered draperies and a custom steel console juxtapose the wallcovering’s traditional design and antique pieces. A bold abstract painting tones down the sweetness of the fauna. “From serene and classic to this room, which is a little bit more wild, we do it all,” says Harris. —Lori Johnston

A transitional-style suite that leans modern, the guest bedroom and bath are a blend of tailored pieces and creative accents, like the bedroom’s striking mosaic-patterned wallcovering that inspired the room’s design scheme. “I felt like it was the perfect jumping-off point because it reminded me of a kaleidoscope,” says Howard, who repeated the wallcovering’s teal hues throughout the bedroom. Teal window drapery, made from a slubbed silklike fabric, is trimmed with an emerald Greek-key embroidered tape, a color combination which was also chosen for the bedding. The room’s lighting has artistic flair, especially the chandelier, which adds an eye-catching modern twist to the space. The same goes for the wall decor, a mix of carved wood panels and paintings. For the bathroom, Howard selected warm neutral shades to complement the tilework in this soothing, tranquil space. Standout pieces include a taupe-colored vanity by Kingdom Woodworks, alabaster-framed mirror and softpatterned accent rug. —Jennifer Boles

The designers envisioned a ladies retreat in this quiet, private office suite, but they didn’t want to hide the ceiling pitches that defined the architecture. “We felt like embracing them and creating a warm, neutral space with curated textures,” says designer Trudy Stump. A snakeskin Thibaut wallcovering, French antiques and modern twists—like the fringe ottomans and lucite tables— resulted in a smart space where a well-traveled woman can work and converse with friends. The vintage Hermès scarf—art in itself—inspired the color palette of the pearl wallcovering, blush botanical Schumacher draperies and custom velvet swivel chairs. The designers’ belief that old and new belong together is further accomplished with the gilded mirror and lean lamps on an acrylic console. To emphasize beauty and function, a desk from the South of France paired with a modern metal chair demonstrates how you can “marry old brown furniture with new sexy furniture, and it’s amazing,” says Stump. “It comes alive again.” —Lori Johnston

Playing for Keeps GAME ROOM Elizabeth McKay, Venture Games A masculine version of a champagne bar, custom brass-framed étagères displaying bottles of bourbon punctuate the veiny dolomite marble backsplash on the terrace level. The first thing visitors see as they descend the graceful staircase, it’s a dramatic backdrop for a fluted game table and forest green velvet chairs underneath a sparkly orb-shape crystal chandelier. “I wanted this space to feel special,” says Lizz McKay, who designed the spaces with husband Chris McKay. “You’re sort of transported into your own boutique hotel.” Scaled to the dimensions of the oversize wooden billiard table underneath it, a contemporary gold leaf chandelier with white shades likewise elevates the game room, which also includes a furniture-like shuffleboard table underneath framed black-and-white photographs of ’60s and ’70s-era musicians such as Janis Joplin. “The wow factor has been amazing,” says McKay of the public’s response. “It’s a little glam and a little rock and roll.” —Tate Gunnerson

Designed with both the home’s interiors and surrounding landscape in mind, the covered loggia is an outdoor space with an indoor feel, best expressed through the furniture from Universal Furniture, which Pratt says is “all made for outdoors, but with the look and quality you are used to seeing indoors.” A neutral slipcovered sofa is dressed up with an assortment of throw pillows, whose exuberant blue-and-green patterning was chosen to complement the home’s lush greenery and nearby pool. “By using these colors, we worked with the beautiful landscaping instead of fighting it,” says Pratt. “The result is an outdoor room that extends beyond the walls.” Wicker and rattan pieces, such as a club chair and pedestals with urns lend a crisp, classic feel to the space, as do a teak dining table and stylish fretwork chairs. Unexpected accents include a console table that holds a collection of blue-and-white ceramics and artwork displayed on exterior walls. —Jennifer Boles

DESIGN-BUILD KBD Development & Construction, Harrison Design, Floralis Garden Design The design-build team’s splendid work shines in the sun-filled estate perched on an acre in Buckhead. Spanning 10,505 square feet, the contemporary take on an English estate by KBD Development & Construction, Harrison Design and Floralis Garden Design honors British architect C.F.A. (Charles Francis Annesley) Voysey with its oversize arches, generous gables and swooping pitches. “The style is from the late 1800s but still very relevant today,” says architect Rick Hatch. “It’s an admired look.” Materials such as stucco, stone and timber present the timeless design elements sought by today’s homeowners. The floating staircase in the glass stair entry is a conversation piece in its own right, while Venetian plaster, barrel-vault ceilings and groin-vault ceilings celebrate craftsmanship. The free-flowing design further shapes the connectivity to the outdoors, which features a pool with a modern, streamlined design. In the front yard, the selection of boxwoods and trees—such as a Chinese snowball viburnum, deciduous magnolia and Japanese maple—frame the house and are deliberately minimal to let the architecture shine, says Lucinda Bray of Floralis Garden Design. And when the sun sets, the landscape and holiday lighting maximize the holiday glow. Says builder Chris Davis, “The house looks as good at night as it does during the day, which is really fun.”—Lori Johnston
