IF DECADES OF JANUARYS lived have taught me anything, it’s that old habits die hard. I may enter a new year determined to better

plan my grocery runs or disconnect more often, yet come March, I find myself back at the store four times a week and getting an eye twitch as I resist the urge to check the ding from my phone. Though there is room for improvement, I’ll argue that one recent hobby actually benefits these bad habits—cooking. Like fromscratch, hours-in-the-kitchen cooking. Don’t want to go back to the store? No problem, I can make pasta and a sauce using everyday pantry items. Lowering screen time? I prefer not to touch my phone with flour-covered hands anyway. I’ve found a sense of calm in the kitchen chaos, oohing and ahhing over exciting new gadgets, organizing methods, and creations. Our January edition echoes this excitement as we celebrate the heart of the home in our annual Kitchens issue. Inside, we reveal

the four winners of our 2025 Kitchen of the Year award (page 14), all of which determine that the most hardworking spaces can also be the most beautiful. Inspiration continues in highlights from our Serenbe Designer Showhouse (page 84) and Cashiers Designer Showhouse (page 106), where our Southeastern trade members pulled out all the stops to craft luxurious yet livable, forwardthinking homes. Keep your eyes peeled for alluring new design nods to the Victorian era (page 105). I still don’t hold the key to conquering bad habits, but to set myself up for success come next January, I think my goal this year will be to celebrate the small wins—and to leave the kitchen quandaries up to the professionals. Cheers!

WELCOME
Next Chapter
IT IS WITH GRATITUDE AND great excitement that I announce the acquisition of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine from Esteem Media through a new business venture, Buckhead Crown Media. Having spent 13 years combined with this publication, I am honored to take ownership of a niche media brand that speaks to—and visits with—its audience frequently. Our entire team—which includes 8 of us—enjoys meeting you at our Designer Showhouses or at our Tour of Kitchens; during design weeks at ADAC or via email, mailed letters, or on the phone. Some of you are our short-term Showhouse neighbors; many of you are building, remodeling, or redecorating and are in search of the best our local trades have to offer. And some, like my friend Kim, have everything they need, and treat the magazine mailing each month like a visit with a dear friend, saying, “a magazine is as close to a girl as you can get.” I’m fortunate to have found my niche early in life, in “shelter” publications. It’s the cherry on top that this niche has afforded me insider-access to the Southeast’s finest design professionals, artisans, craftspeople and likeminded entrepreneurs. This is a
dedicated set of professionals who continually raise the bar and determine exactly what “home” looks like in our fair city—and it’s our pleasure to curate these projects into a publication worthy of your standards each month. It’s important to acknowledge those who have elevated Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles into the club-like status the brand currently enjoys: former owner Adam Japko; longtime publisher Gina Christman; my editorial predecessor, Clinton Smith; and our current all-star editorial, marketing, and sales teams, which compete with best in the business, nationwide, every day.And finally, I’d like to express my eternal thanks to my family, pictured, whose unwavering support motivates me on a daily basis. I will retain my role as publisher. Team AH&L will continue to leverage our beloved media brand’s appeal for the next generation, while maintaining the level of sophistication and graciousness our shared niche is known for. SUBTLE COLOR
Two-tone cabinetry featuring a natural wood finish elevates an all-white kitchen while remaining a neutral backdrop for colorful window treatments and accessories.
TO CREATE A functional, family-friendly kitchen for their family of six, an Atlanta couple enlisted the help of two design experts who—having worked with them before on previous homes—they knew they could trust: interior designer Suzanne Kasler and luxury cabinet designer Christopher Peacock. “For this family, the kitchen is truly the heart of the home,” says Kasler. Because the kitchen serves as a central place for family meals and gatherings, “the goal was to create a kitchen that exudes warmth, embodying their family-oriented lifestyle while maintaining practicality for everyday use.” Considering the client’s love of cooking and growing their own vegetables in the backyard, the design team created a functional, U-shaped kitchen layout and incorporated a dedicated wash area for prepping produce. “This is the third project that we have completed for this client, and their busy lifestyle demands organization down to the last spoon,” says Peacock. “We designed specific storage for paper towels, the dog beds, pots and pans, and silverware, and it really works well for the family.” Inspired by the vaulted ceilings and beams overhead, Peacock grounded the kitchen with natural wood cabinetry. “Christopher brought his extensive expertise in kitchen functionality and design, ensuring that every detail met our client’s needs,” says Kasler. “His insight helped create a space that was both beautiful and practical.” To balance these rustic details, Kasler aimed for a more continental, chic aesthetic, dressing up the space with items such as a custom stainless steel-and-brass François & Co. hood, a practical and striking pot rack, and custom Fortuny shades. At the island, bench seating lends itself to family time. “We love the combination of dressed-up details with the casual wood ceiling,” says Kasler. “It creates a truly unique and beautiful atmosphere.”
ON DISPLAY Rather than hide everyday items behind cabinetry, the design team embraced them with an attention-grabbing brass pot rack, infusing a layer of character and charm in the space.

AROUND THE BEND
Arched cabinetry doors add a refined, sculptural layer to the kitchen’s overall design aesthetic.
AFTER PURCHASING THEIR family home more than 13 years ago, a pair of Atlanta homeowners tackled numerous home-improvement projects before the time finally felt right to complete their dream project: the kitchen. “They envisioned a space with beautiful finishes, functional storage, and personalized custom touches,” says Brenda Thompson, owner and principal designer of HouseLift Design. “They wanted a timeless kitchen with modern elements to keep it fresh and relevant.” To achieve this, custom white oak cabinetry—which HouseLift brought to life with the help of Summit Renovations and Pogue Cabinets—takes center stage, providing functional storage for appliances while grounding the kitchen in a blend of materials and textures. Near the range, for instance, a countertop cabinet features unique reeded glass, which echoes the reeded details on the nearby pantry. Lower cabinetry features deep drawers that easily fit pots and pans. Custom organizational 26
inserts cut down on clutter, while a docking drawer keeps electronic devices out of the way. Another functional yet fashionable choice was the durable, low-maintenance Cambria quartz that the designer used for the countertops and extended up to the backsplash for a seamless effect. One of the homeowners’ primary needs was additional refrigeration space, which the design team addressed by converting a closet into a functional bar area with an ice maker and double-drawer refrigerator for beverages. To tackle the room’s limited natural light, HouseLift incorporated dimmable recessed lighting in crucial areas, wall sconces by the range, and pendant lights over the island. “This approach allowed for ambient lighting during dayto-day use, with the option for brighter lighting with additional recessed lights when needed,” says the designer. “This kitchen is more than a culinary workspace,” adds Thompson. “It’s a beautifully designed environment that enriches the entire home.”

EASE OF USE
Beauty meets function with fashion-forward design details. The cooktop’s knobs are integrated directly into the marble countertop, while the brass pot filler on the marble backsplash eliminates an extra step when cooking.
THE KITCHEN DESIGN set the tone for the renovation of this Atlanta-area home. “The goal was to make the kitchen much bigger while incorporating as much storage as possible,” says interior designer Shawn Amtower of Amtower Interior + Design. “The homeowners wanted a more updated vibe with clean lines and hidden appliances; this, in turn, would set the stage for the flow of the rest of the house.” Partnering with builder Mike Hammersmith and cabinetmaker Stile LLC, Amtower incorporated floor-to-ceiling white oak cabinetry with a hidden pantry that houses small appliances as well as dry goods. To maximize space, the garage entry into the 34
kitchen was redirected to the mudroom, which allowed the design team to use the original entry point as additional storage. Gagganeau appliances and a coffee and bar area are also tucked away behind closed doors. Additional structural changes included increasing the size of the kitchen island, adding two half-radius entrances on either side of the kitchen, and extending the back wall “to gain more space for the appliances, creating a much grander focal point,” says Amtower. “I think putting the appliances behind pocket doors made the biggest impact, keeping everything feeling weighted and balanced.” To complement the kitchen’s serene and streamlined cabinetry, Amtower selected a Calacatta Cremo marble— sourced through Ciot and fabricated by Creative Stone, Inc.— for the countertops and backsplash and added a custom, white powder-coated steel hood. “We definitely achieved a more spacious and functional kitchen with a lot more storage,” says Amtower. “The white oak cabinetry, Calacatta marble, and Gaggenau appliances wrap this kitchen in luxury while being soothing, inviting, and timeless.”

TABLESIDE DELIGHT
Wow guests with a personal chef’s table! In lieu of a separate dining room, an extra-large island that can accommodate 10 people offers a front-row seat to the kitchen action while hosting.
AN INVITING AND FUNCTIONAL kitchen was necessary for an Atlanta couple who love to cook and entertain. “They wanted their kitchen to be a sanctuary of flavor and joy,” says interior designer Liz Shults of Le Chateau Interiors, who teamed up with Square Feet Studio’s Blake Burton, Ryan DeCesaro of Morgan Creek, and Rick Fierer of Bildon Construction to deliver just that. “I envisioned a kitchen where unique materials and textures intertwine to create a space that is both sophisticated and inviting,” says Shults, who pulled her clients outside of their comfort zone with blue marble countertops and blue backsplash tile. A specialty wood ceiling nods to nature, as do custom windows that run the length of the kitchen and living area and bathe the interiors in natural light. “I believe in mixing metals, wood, and stone to craft an interesting and dynamic space that reflects the beauty of the natural world,” adds Shults. In place of a traditional separate dining room, the design team opted for an extra-large island that doubles as a dining table for 10, allowing guests to feel part of the cooking experience. “This further reinforces the kitchen’s role as the social core of the home,” says Burton. Meanwhile, custom cabinetry by Morgan Creek offers ample storage, including built-ins for both dry and cold 42
storage. Says Burton, “Our clients wanted a visible kitchen that could accommodate intimate dinner parties and social gatherings, so it was important that the kitchen become a high-functioning space with high-quality finishes.”

Haynes Manor

It’s just so quintessentially “Atlanta,” Haynes Manor— traditional yet stylish, manicured but not unapproachable, in the heart of the city but with a decidedly residential charm and quietude. The picturesque neighborhood borders Peachtree Road on one end and Northside on the other, with Peachtree Battle running right through. The avenue, for which the Peachtree Battle Alliance (Haynes Manor’s neighborhood association) is named, is about 115 years old, surrounded by some of the city’s most architecturally significant homes, and even inspired the cultural phenomenon of the early aughts, the play Peachtree Battle (remember Trudy Habersham?). Haynes Manor residents can stroll toward Northside to play in the 200-acre Atlanta Memorial Park, which includes Bobby Jones Golf Course, Bitsy Grant Tennis Center, and Haynes Manor Park. Head toward Peachtree, and the conveniences of Peachtree Battle Shopping Center offer neighborhood cult favorites Café Lapin and Jalisco, shopping at Onward Reserve, High Country Outfitters, Woo Skincare + Cosmetics, and Holeman and Finch Bottle Shop.
HISTORY Haynes Manor was developed in 1925 on 190 acres by Eugene Van Valkenburg Haynes, a prominent Whitehall jeweler turned real estate developer. In late 1926, he deeded 20 acres of land to the City and Fulton County for Atlanta Memorial Park. A year later, Haynes gave another 36-acre tract for a municipal golf course and clubhouse, which opened as Bobby Jones Golf Course in 1933. Contingent to Haynes’ development, Peachtree Heights Park was developed by Eretus Rivers (for whom E. Rivers Elementary is named) and Walter P. Andrews. New York architects Carrère & Hastings designed the street layout and the “Lodge” (also known as the “little white house” at the corner of Peachtree and Peachtree Battle), which was the real estate office for E. Rivers Realty. In 1937, it was deeded to Fulton County for use as an educational building and became “Mrs. Bloodworth’s Kindergarten,” a Daughters of the Revolution facility, and then office space for E. Rivers Elementary. Rumors and speculation vary as to the current and future state of the building. 56

FUTURE
The Atlanta Opera worked closely with the Haynes Manor Foundation, the Peachtree Battle Alliance, and the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy to plan a significant transformation of the historic Bobby Jones Clubhouse (the vacant Grecian Revival at 384 Woodward Way) to a new 56,000-square-foot multidisciplinary arts center. In summer of 2027, all of Atlanta can expect to enjoy a variety of performances and community programming focusing on the arts including recitals, jazz, cabarets, and chamber operas (and while anyone with BeltLine access could stroll over, Haynes Manor residents may also enjoy a lovely hum of an orchestra from their backyards). Core funding for the $45-million project is already secured, and a capital raise is underway. 58
“Haynes Manor hits all the high points from an architectural perspective. From the 1930s English, Georgian, and Colonial estates to the quaint cottages, there is something for everyone in this quintessential Atlanta neighborhood.” —Brandon Ingram, Architect and Haynes Manor Resident
The Art Deco house at 306 Peachtree Battle is considered to be Atlanta’s only true Art Deco residence and the subject of many whispers. Built in 1934, the Evans-Cucich house may have had a tunnel running underneath Peachtree Battle—neighbors in the know confess there is a door there, but cannot confirm the tunnel (but that doesn’t stop them from conjecturing about it).
BIG BRAG
The neighborhood had a big win in obtaining nonprofit status for the Peachtree Battle Alliance Neighborhood Improvement organization, whose mission is beautification and enhancements throughout the neighborhood. Says board member Hil Harper: “We’re proud of the 501(c)(3), which many may be unfamiliar with, but our visibility is growing as we continue to make our beautiful neighborhood even more attractive and one of the best places to live in Atlanta.” The initial projects were the Sam T. Roberts Memorial Park at the Northside Drive entrance, and the Sagamore Drive entrance (both completed in late 2024); next up are the Peachtree Battle Avenue medians, and then the Peachtree Road entrance. The nonprofit, in partnership with Peachtree Battle Alliance, FEMA, and City of Atlanta Parks department, also helped foster the Betty Young Park, which opened in 2024, creating a beautiful greenspace for kids and adults to enjoy.

Around town with
Naomi Von Habersham I LOVE A KITCHEN that is tricked-out with the latest appliances and conveniences, don’t you? Years ago, when I was renovating my kitchen, having a salamander was all the rage. I was tempted to get one, thinking that it would inspire me to start broiling up a storm, but then it occurred to me: Salamanders can get very hot, and I tend to overcook things, so charring my food or setting my kitchen on fire seemed a real possibility. I nixed the salamander. I’ve also been intrigued by those tiny wall ovens that double as rotisseries. They look so neat, and I’ve heard they’re great for roasting chickens or Cornish game hens. If I had one, I would be able to roast a chicken myself, but then again, the roast chicken from Publix is oh so convenient. I even once came close to buying a high-end deep-fat fryer, which is ironic considering I rarely eat fried foods. Simply perusing an appliance-maker’s website makes my mouth water, for I become convinced, at least briefly, that those amazing, wonderful, time-saving appliances are going to make a chef of me, once and for all. But the reality is, as much as I like to eat, and as much as I admire a beautiful kitchen, I don’t really like to cook. By the time I go through the rigamarole of prepping the food, cooking the food, and then plating it, I’ve lost my appetite for whatever dish it is that I’ve spent hours preparing. At that point, all I want to eat is a bowl of cereal. Despite my ambivalence toward cooking, my enthusiasm for the tools that go with it remains strong. I’m a sucker for a shiny new cookware set, not to mention all those kitchen gadgets I see advertised late at night on TV. And those state-of-the-art appliances? Yes, I want those too, even if I’ll rarely use them. I may never fully know my way around a kitchen, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate one, especially if it has a vacuum-sealing drawer, my latest appliance obsession. 61

COMMUNITY FOCUS
“I always had an interest in bartending and found that coming up with cocktails came easy to me,” says beverage director Cedar Meyers.
Serenbe’s cocktailery and kitchen AUSTIN’S is the swanky new neighbor we have been waiting for Written by KATE STRICKLAND Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN
“The design process started out with ideas about what makes a sexy and minimalist space,” says Serenbe Chief Marketing Officer Monica Olsen.
TAKE A 45-MINUTE DRIVE outside the perimeter and you might be surprised to find yourself charmed by a slower way of life. Much like the planned community it resides in, Austin’s at Serenbe is a dreamy respite south of Atlanta. Exceptional food and decor undoubtedly characterize a great restaurant, but it’s a restaurant’s ability to foster connection that sets it apart—and Serenbe founder Steve Nygren made sure the new establishment did just that. Aptly named to honor community figure and long-time Nygren family friend, Father Austin Ford, the restaurant exudes a welcoming air that is immediately felt by all. Led by co-chefs Tyler Braun and Jesse Sherwood, the secret to crafting a swoon-worthy menu is introspection. 62
“I created this menu almost selfishly; I thought about how I want to eat when I go out,” says Braun. “I want savory, almost overly decadent dishes, and I want a little bit of this and that.” In true Serenbe fashion, the co-chefs are led by seasonal ingredients, and dishes are designed for sharing among the table—that is if you can bear to spare a few delicious bites. The poached cabbage emerges as a menu star, and will raise questions as to why vegetables didn’t taste similarly as a child. “We take things that people are familiar with, and we make them exceptional,” says Sherwood. The honey-lacquered short rib proves good things take time with its over-24-hour prep time. “We wanted to make

everything approachable but in a surprising way,” he continues. The ever-popular Hamachi—a favorite of chef Braun—caters to his girlfriend’s love of the dish. “I told her I’d make menu items just for her so when she comes in, it’ll be my love letter to her.” Sweetness continues on the dessert menu with the lemon buttermilk panna cotta with local honey and bee pollen. More local flavors abound on the farm-totable cocktail menu. “Serenbe has an incredible edible landscape,” says beverage director Cedar Meyers, who often cuts clippings off the rosemary bush behind the restaurant. A nod to Serenbe’s lush surroundings, sip on the Somewhere Green cocktail for a taste of farmfresh basil that you just can’t get in the city. Styles harmoniously mingle in the luxurious yet comfortable interiors. Designed by Rook and Dash, the sultry space exudes a moody, Parisian sensibility. With a leather-topped bar and curved booths, Austin’s brims with sophisticated charm, and custom artwork by notable Serenbe residents adds a personal touch throughout. “I have a lot of guests comment that they get a New York vibe, and it always shocks them because it’s not what you’d expect to find behind the doors,” says Meyers. The unmatched interiors and lineup of dishes is second only to the feeling of community. “It all goes back to people and conversation,” says Braun. “I hope that guests leave with a memory of an experience, and that they talk about it again some day.” austinsatserenbe.com

Atlantans can’t get enough of two-time Michelin-recommended DELBAR. The popular Middle Eastern eatery recently opened its Buckhead location in the old King + Duke space on the corner of Peachtree Road and West Paces Ferry Road. Known for mouthwatering shareables and dreamy interiors, the new 6,000-square-foot space, replete with soaring ceilings, antique textiles, and natural finishes, draws inspiration from the countryside of Iran where owner Fares Kargar’s grandmother resides. The menu will feature a mix of beloved and new dishes. delbaratl.com Restauranteers Nan and the late Charlie Niyomkul of NAN THAI have passed the torch to their daughter DeeDee Niyomkul to open a Buckhead location. Chef and owner, DeeDee honors her family’s legacy while adding her own modern personality. Among the starters gracing the menu is Tom Kha, the soup DeeDee debuted on Food Network’s “Beat Bobby Flay,” along with classic dishes like the signature crispy calamari. nanthai.com Mamma mia! Atlanta-based restaurateur Brian Lewis brought BOCADO outside the perimeter. Sandy Springs residents can rejoice and indulge in the pizzeria’s fresh menu composed of 72-hour naturally leavened wood-fired pizzas, housemade pasta, and more. bocadoatlanta.com

Grace to you and peace! On behalf of the people of this wonderful church, the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip, I welcome you to the 2025 Cathedral Giving by Design! Those three words—Cathedral, Giving, Design—really do represent who this beautiful community is. We are a church, a grand church, who values generosity and who values beauty. The third annual Cathedral Giving by Design calls us again to celebrate generosity and beauty. Thank you Lesley Foster and Rebecca Hollingsworth for shepherding the third Cathedral Giving by Design with amazing grace, excellence, and hospitality! Welcome to all of you! I remind guests that the Cathedral of St. Philip is a beautiful and sacred space, but that we are especially a vibrant church community. St. Philip’s Church was established in 1847 as the first Episcopal Church in Atlanta; we became a Cathedral Church in 1904 and moved to our present location here in Buckhead in 1932. We are grateful to have grown tremendously since then. We grow because people love serving God here! I am also thrilled that the outreach proceeds this year are designated for Wellspring Living, which is devoted to providing the critical resources needed to help survivors of sex trafficking recover and to keep those at risk of exploitation safe. Through life-giving residential and community-based programs, children and young women are provided the opportunity to live and dream again. Again, I sincerely thank Lesley Foster and Rebecca Hollingsworth for their outstanding and faithful leadership. As co-chairs, they have organized and worked with hundreds of volunteers in creating this complex event. And I thank my good friends, Nancy and Randy Rizor, the Honorary Chairs of this year’s Cathedral Giving by Design. They represent true Cathedral faithfulness and generosity. Finally, I thank each of you for participating in Cathedral Giving by Design in its third year. Please visit the Cathedral! Indeed, I hope you can return for other occasions of service and prayer. We are a house of prayer for all people; and your presence, and prayer, help us to fulfill that mission of openness and hospitality! May God bless you always, THE VERY REVEREND SAMUEL G. CANDLER Dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip

Since 2001, Wellspring Living has provided domestic sex trafficking victims and those at risk with comprehensive, trauma-informed, victim-centered recovery services through residential programs, community-based programs, and post-program support. With event proceeds supporting the creation of new tiny homes on their campus, supporting the Welcome Home campaign for Wellspring Living ties seamlessly with our mission of celebrating homes and lifting up our community. Survivors will be provided with community, therapy, and most importantly a safe space to call home on their journey to wholeness.

In our events, we honor Nancy and Randy Rizor who have inspired us with their decades of thoughtful service. We could not be more thrilled to dedicate Cathedral Giving by Design in their name this year! Join us for the much-anticipated activities, starting with the Welcome Home party at the Cathedral of St. Philip on Friday night, where we will enjoy food, beverage, and a lively auction! On Saturday morning, we will be inspired by a design panel moderated by Christina Dandar, well known for her business The Potted Boxwood. Discussing trends and the beauty of home, we are thrilled to welcome design professionals Ashley Gilbreath, Phoebe Howard, Melanie Millner, and John Plaster. Immediately following, enjoy a journey through four stunning homes featuring work from our panelists and historic Buckhead magnificence. Planning and executing Cathedral Giving by Design has been a labor of love and would not be possible without our amazing committee. Thank you especially to Dean Candler and the Cathedral clergy and staff for their support and encouragement. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of so many parishioners and friends who have given their time and talent to make this event a success. Thank you all! ASHLEY GILBREATH
Ashley Gilbreath is a southern-based, award-winning interior designer renowned for creating casually elegant homes where the family can gather to celebrate everyday living. Her fresh take on the industry can be seen in Southern Living, Veranda, House Beautiful, LUXE, Southern Home, Coastal Living, and more, and in homes from Florida to New York. Her work is thoughtfully and patiently designed to ensure memories are wrapped in a feeling of joy, comfort, and beauty. In 2010, Ashley launched Parish; her first retail store offering curated pieces found around the world. Ashley studied at Auburn University and the New York School of Interior Design. She is a twotime recipient of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art’s coveted Shutze Award and has been nominated for ADAC’s Southeast Designer of the Year. Ashley’s bestselling book, The Joy of Home, was published in April 2023. She lives in Montgomery, Alabama, with her husband and three children.
JOHN PLASTER During a particularly frustrating art class in elementary school, John Plaster announced that he was going to be an architect and never looked back. His passion for design drove him to complete degrees in both architecture and interior architecture at Auburn University. John spent his early career practicing at the storied firms of McAlpine in Atlanta and LSM in Washington, D.C., where he developed a passion for creating rigorous and romantic designs. Classically trained and modern at heart, John creates work that is as timely as it is timeless. His eye for detail and classic proportion imbue his work with a true sense of place, no matter the style. Based in Atlanta with projects throughout the Southeast, John brings nuance to his projects by forming a deep understanding of his clients, their home, and their community. John’s work has been featured in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Metropolis, and Rural Studio at Twenty.
MELANIE MILLNER
Melanie Millner is an award-winning designer with a deep appreciation for art, architecture, travel, and meaningful experiences. She has earned a reputation for refined and beautiful interiors that focus on the comfort of home without compromising timeless style. Melanie continues to attract a loyal clientele who count on her synthesis of rich materials, beautiful color palettes, and unique, expressive interiors that create the feeling of home for each individual project. She was born in New York, and her family later moved to Texas where she attended The University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a degree in interior design. She moved to Atlanta and worked for an architectural firm until she started her own Atlanta-based interiors firm in 1993. The Design Atelier is regularly featured in publications such as Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, LUXE Interiors + Design Magazine, House Beautiful, Interior Design Magazine, Maine Home + Design and others. She has participated in numerous Showhouses, served on the board of ASID and on the board of MODA.
PHOEBE HOWARD
In 1996, Phoebe and Jim Howard opened the doors to their first store, Mrs. Howard, in Jacksonville, Florida, hoping to demystify the decorating process for their customers. The goal was simple: to create a retail space that showcased Jim’s architectural and decorating talent, and Phoebe’s natural skills for buying, decorating, and merchandising. With equal parts of exceptional customer service and a well-rounded mix of furniture, antiques, and accessories, the store was an instant success. They later added another store, Max & Company, which features a younger, more modern appeal. Now, the Howards have Mrs. Howard and Max & Company stores in multiple states. Phoebe’s penchant for creating stylish spaces has evolved into her own brand of decorating, which has garnered praise from national media. Phoebe’s work can only be characterized by its timelessness and her mantra to “keep it pretty.” Her work is encapsulated in her first book, The Joy of Decorating, published by Stewart, Tabori & Chang. She has also written a monthly decorating advice column for Southern Living Magazine, and is well regarded for her business acumen and catering to clients and members of the design community.

THE NEXT 100 YEARS
Originally built in 1925, architect and homeowner John Plaster carefully and lovingly renovated this historic home in Ardmore Park so that it will continue to inspire and delight for the next 100 years. John’s masterful touch honors the original English Arts & Crafts style with his light-filled interiors and strategic use of space. The warm, modern interiors are a testament to John’s ability to seamlessly harmonize the past with the present. Personal touches and creativity abound throughout this inspiring abode. The verdant, shade-filled grounds, evocative of an English garden, are the perfect complement to this vibrant residence. PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY FOLLOWILL
EFFORTLESS ELEGANCE
Nestled on a quiet street in Buckhead, this spacious residence offers abundant room for entertaining indoors and out. Inside this grand home, designer Melanie Millner’s vivacious use of color and whimsical touches draw you into each room as it unfolds. Expansive gardens, recently interpreted by Carson McEleheny Landscape Architecture and Design, thoughtfully engage the natural landscape, creating a series of distinct spaces outdoors.

CLASSIC REVIVAL ESTATE
This 1930s estate is a serene, private oasis nestled in the trees of Buckhead. Designer Phoebe Howard, with architect T. Blake Segars, completed the most recent renovations and interior updates to reimagine this historic home for a young family of four. The inviting and enriching interiors are a testament to Howard’s mastery of balance in space, light, and proportion. The abundant expert details and craftsmanship are a delight to the thoughtful observer. Outdoors, the manicured gardens designed by Carson McEleheny Landscape Architecture and Design are the perfect complement to the indoor sanctuary.

ICONIC REGENCY STYLE
Everyone’s favorite iconic facade on stately Argonne Road beckons you inside this home. Designer and homeowner Lelia Pratt and architect T. Blake Segars collaborated masterfully to reimagine this Regency style home for an active family of five, including teenagers. Much like such a vibrant family, moments of drama balance the calming interiors, which are both dynamic and inviting. It is easy to immerse yourself in the blue-lacquer bar, that beautifully highlights the abundant natural light. PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY FOLLOWILL

Paying homage to the home’s Victorian style, Maria McLaurin furnished the living room with an updated version of the style’s trademark eclecticism. “I believe a home’s interior design should always relate to the bones of the house,” she says. A curvy midcentury sofa anchors the space while also serving as a modern foil for the room’s many antique furnishings, such as a pair of caned walnut fauteuils, English mahogany library chairs, and an 18-century Italian desk. A scrollwork iron chandelier, 86
contemporary art, and a midcentury glass-and-brass cocktail table bestow further personality on the room. McLaurin’s selection of fabrics is also stylistically mixed. In addition to the subtly patterned glazed linen that covers the sofa, there are striped silks, tobacco-colored leather, and a vintage-looking floral fabric used for sofa throw pillows. The designer employed color to tie together the diverse pieces, primarily a softened palette of green, blue, and brown.

An outdoor space made to feel like an extension of the home’s interior, the screened porch encompasses the best of both worlds. “I wanted to bring the comfort and coziness of the indoors to the beauty of the outdoors,” says Zeb Grant. The designer assembled a collection of mismatched antique wicker furniture, which he unified with rich chocolate-colored velvet cushions and striped throw pillows in shades of mustard and blue. The striped fabric also appears on an upholstered ottoman, which serves double duty as a cocktail table. Other pieces, such as a small leather ottoman, skirted side table, and a pair of ceramic table lamps, mimic indoor spaces. Naturally, plants accent the space, either ensconced in planters or positioned on plant stands. An adjacent porch space is also nostalgically furnished with rocking chairs and scrolled iron planters, providing an additional covered spot for enjoying the outdoor scenery. 87

As she did with the home’s interior finishes, Pamela Stakemann let the home’s architecture guide her when designing the kitchen and scullery. “I wanted to incorporate some traditional elements from the Victorian era while still making the home feel fresh and updated,” she says. Clean-looking finishes like off-white lower cabinetry, white quartzite countertops, and a backsplash comprised of honed marble and painted tile creates a kitchen that at heart is modern and bright. At the same time, Stakemann
88
introduced time-honored details that reflect the home’s architectural roots, such as brass bell jar lanterns, brushed brass faucets, and dark oak glass-front upper cabinetry, whose interior olive green hue is repeated in the adjacent scullery. Given the scullery’s location off the dining room, Stakemann strove for a semiformal look with the colored cabinetry and wall paneling, which she accessorized with vintage-style brass hardware, plaster amphora vases, and a small landscape painting.

TRUE BLUE
DINING ROOM, STAIR HALL, MUDROOM, & POWDER ROOM Anisa Darnell, Truth & Co. Interior Design Aiming for a collected-over-time look, Anisa Darnell harmonized her spaces with both a curated mix of traditional furnishings and a palette of blue hues augmented by white, green, and brown. “I am a sucker for blue and white, and I feel that it will be around forever,” says Darnell. The dining room’s unique seating arrangement includes a chambray settee, blue-and-white striped armchairs, and wicker end chairs that surround a reclaimed pine dining table overseen by a copper lantern and unique medallion detail on the ceiling. Antique and vintage art graces the walls in the stair hall and mudroom, where a collage of bird and duck prints preside over a black-and-white checkerboard floor. The powder room has a moodier feel thanks to gray-blue millwork that accompanies a floral-patterned wallpaper. A brass mirror, hardware, and polished granite countertop add sparkle. 91

COLOR CRUSH
PRIMARY BEDROOM & BATH Anna-Wooten Loggins, A. Wooten Interiors
Warm and inviting, the primary bedroom’s color palette has a surprising backstory. “When I first started in design, my two least favorite colors were chocolate brown and chartreuse. As a challenge to myself, I decided to start my palette with those two colors,” confesses Anna-Wooten Loggins, who admits to now loving both. Chartreuse floral-patterned drapery, a bench covered in deep green mohair, and bed pillows banded in chocolate brown enrich the otherwise neutral space. Reflecting Serenbe’s laid-back character, Loggins selected antique furniture with less formal finishes. An 18th-century painted Italian chest and a bleached wine table placed bedside mix comfortably with modern elements, such as a large white ceramic table lamp and a plaster-white ceiling fixture. The adjoining bathroom also radiates warmth. Framed artwork, a metallic drinks table, and a miniature woven rug complement the room’s neutraltone finishes that include a taupe-and-gray checkerboard floor, limestone shower surround, and putty-colored cabinetry.

LOFTY RETREAT
LAUNDRY & LOFT Eryn Houck, Bellwether Design & Interiors Intended as a getaway space where one can relax or play a game, the upstairs loft evokes the outdoor landscape. “I wanted to bring in natural texture and colors to remind visitors of how unique this community’s setting is,” says Eryn Houck. Taking her color cue from both nature and a landscape painting that hangs in front of the window, Houck gravitated to lush greens and browns in the form of patterned drapery, artichoke-colored barrel-back chairs,
and a metal games table topped by green stone. A large seagrass rug and petrified wood table heighten the room’s natural feel. To reflect light, Houck placed an antique trumeau mirror at an angle against one wall. The laundry room continues the loft’s design story. In addition to a largescale floral wallpaper in shades of brown and ochre, an upholstered woven counter stool and oxidized ceramic lamp meld the room with its natural environment. 95

Although furnished primarily in tranquil hues, this guest bedroom also pays colorful tribute to the fall season. “The inspiration for my room came from the beautiful fall colors you see at Serenbe. I fell in love with this saturated ochre color of the fall leaves,” says Katie Moorhouse Gluth. An alpaca throw, drapery trim, and a burlwood desk, all in shades of burnt orange, mingle with serene furnishings that include bedside chests, a chair and ottoman, and a plaster shell pendant light. Warm white walls further soften the space while also emphasizing a salon-style grouping of framed art. Textured elements lend additional appeal, from the floor’s sisal rug up to the raffia-wallpapered ceiling with medallion details. The room’s centerpiece is an oak and hammered-metal bed, which the designer softened with sheer fabric panels. Off the bedroom, a small balcony is reminiscent of the Victorian architectural style and is the perfect place for a morning coffee. 96

Furnished with classic English furniture and botanical patterns, Kevin O’Gara’s guest bedroom for Holland MacRae is infused with a British design sensibility. “Serenbe’s setting recalls the rolling green hills of the English countryside, so it felt fitting to lean into a layered, English aesthetic,” explains O’Gara. Framed horticultural-print wallpaper panels prompted the room’s nature-driven color palette, particularly the green block-print fabric that was used for draperies and a matching bed coverlet. Lime-white walls, a cream-colored
armless sofa, and bedding embroidered with soft green trim foster an overall tranquil environment that allows a variety of wood pieces to stand out. A four-poster bed, antique walnut chest, and a turned-leg bench covered in a zigzag fabric espouse a traditional look made fresh by the presence of a contemporary woven pendant light. A similarly compelling mix appears in the adjoining vestibule, where a squiggle-print wallpaper forms a spirited backdrop for a klismos-style bench and abstract painting. 99

FALL MELODY BEDROOM & BATH Olivia Westbrooks, Olivia Westbrooks Interiors
Naming her space “Autumn Jazz” after the room’s colorful abstract wallcovering that reminds her of jazz notes, Olivia Westbrooks took design inspiration from the mural-like wallpaper’s rich fall colors. “Drawing from nature and bold hues, I approached the room as an artist who loves vivid color and creative experimentation.” Maroon-painted millwork, deep tan walls, and auberginecolored drapery envelop the room in rich, deep tones that are enlivened by a chartreuse velvet headboard and bold, dynamic artwork. For a sensorial experience, Westbrooks added textured elements, including a hammered brass chest, pleated leather stools, and the fourposter bed’s tactile throw. Westbrooks even thought to incorporate a device that converts the potted white bird of paradise’s electrical conductivity into soothing music. Coordinating colors and fabrics were selected for the bathroom, where textured maroon wallpaper, an abstract-patterned window shade, and brass finishes form a cozy space.

In contrast to the home’s light, fresh exterior, the terrace level’s flex room and bar, which are designed for entertaining, set themselves apart with a moody atmosphere conjured by charcoal and cognac hues. “The room is inspired by a mix of nostalgia and modern sophistication, evoking the feel of a private library or a secret cigar lounge,” says Jimmy Stanton. To accommodate conversation, he created multiple seating areas using an unconventional yet sophisticated mix of clubby furniture and unique finds. One area features a set of classic leather
club chairs that have been partnered with triangular concrete coffee tables, a midcentury style credenza, and a brass starburst chandelier. The other boasts a rust-colored mohair sofa, shagreen coffee table, and petrified wood side tables that support handmade ceramic lamps. Art pieces are displayed prominently throughout, including a Todd Murphy owl painting that hangs above the fireplace. The bar kitchenette and an adjacent powder room are also uniquely arrayed with sculptural relics, contemporary lighting, and traditional Asian rugs.

WARM WELCOME ENTRY, FRONT PORCH, & TERRACE PATIO Meredith Page & Liz Livingston, Page House Studio
Drawing on their time spent living in California, where indoor-outdoor living is a way of life, Meredith Page and Liz Livingston designed the front porch and terrace patio with as much flair as any indoor space. “In our opinion, exterior spaces are the most important part of a home, where you can feel both connected to your personal style and the outside world.” A customdesigned iron daybed upholstered in subtle yellow and gray-striped cushions, cream drapery, and natural-colored fringe trim is seated near the front door, welcoming visitors while also setting the stage for the neutral colors, botanical fabrics, and textured elements used elsewhere on the lower porch. A similarly striking tableau appears by the back door, where a pair of iron and rush chairs flank a skirted square table. The green vines entwined throughout provide the most unique touch. Made of papier-mâché like their pedestals, the vines further connect the porch with its outdoor surroundings.

Located at the threshold of Serenbe’s Overlook enclave, the showhouse, which was designed by Steve Dray and Cecilia Winston of Serenbe Planning + Design, offers visitors a first look at the enclave’s Victorian-style streetscape. In lieu of the style’s sometimes heavy appearance, the duo reinterpreted it with a light touch, starting with the home’s fresh white exterior. An array of historicalinspired architectural details supply the home with breezy charm, including a corner bedroom balcony, cantilevered bay, and a classic wraparound porch. “This is my favorite feature, because we reside in a porch-living community,” says Dray. The home’s
charming architecture set the tone for the interior finishes, which were selected by Pamela Stakemann of South Haven Builders. “I used traditional elements inspired by Victorian design throughout the spaces, including color influences, millwork details, intricate patterns, and classic lighting and plumbing fixtures,” she says. The millwork’s color palette of light putty tones and richer hues like steel gray and olive green speaks to the home’s updated traditional style, as do period-inspired oak finishes, vintage-looking brass hardware, and copper light fixtures. The landscape, designed by Land Plus, continues the tone of stately, storied style. 105

Mountainous Moves DESIGN-BUILD Lisa Wester Interiors, Cow Rock Construction, Alex Smith Garden Design
Breathing new life into this rustic mountain cottage—originally built in the 1990s and featuring a dogtrot connecting to a garage apartment with a full guest suite—took a team effort and involved substantial changes inside and out. “We wanted to maintain the original charm of the property since it represented what Cashiers truly embodies with mountain living, but also bring more current, modern functionality and technology into the build,” says Lisa Wester, who served as the architectural finisher and lead specification designer for the entire project, partnering with the current homeowner, Richard Jennings, who was the remodeler. The team fully gutted the kitchen and living room, and in the retreat, there’s new cabinetry, appliances, and surfaces. The front of the home now boasts a new paver sidewalk, and along with foundation plantings in the back of the home and more plantings along the boardwalk leading to the pavilion, landscape architect Alex Smith gave the existing firepit area a visual makeover. “I was inspired by the possibility of the firepit space becoming an outdoor room,” he says about reworking the stepping stones, reconfiguring the bed lines, and planting surrounding flowering shrubs and herbaceous plantings that purposefully complement Drew English’s neighboring dahlia display. Says Smith, “We created a whimsical firewood nook in the existing wall and used a faux bois bench situated on the edge of this space for viewing the garden.” 108

When fashioning the front porch, Jeanie Gilmer called to the home’s serene setting in the woods. “This was an opportunity to use pieces that would usually go indoors and enjoy them outdoors,” she reveals. “It helped to make the space feel intimate and cozier.” She created a porch where one could spend all day, from savoring a beautiful Sunday brunch to napping on the sumptuous double chaise—Gilmer’s favorite piece in the space. While the color story is largely green, the designer played with patterns and fabrics on the accessories and furniture, mixing stripes with florals and animal prints, along with global touches like a Turkish-style ottoman. Original artwork also plays a lead role, such as a peaceful forest scape called Limoncello by artist Sally Boyd, juxtaposed with a contemporary piece by Lynn Sanders above the chaise. 109

Moss-covered walkways, vast ferns, and gardens inspired Heather Parker and Wren Caples to create the feeling of an English cottage in the hallway and foyer. The foyer’s woodland wallcovering directed the color palette, including the hallway’s green paint color, and the foyer’s coordinating hanging panels. “We used the same linen fabric for the face of the panels, then layered in pattern and color in the custom details,” says Parker. Both spaces flaunt old and new pieces, including the foyer’s custom octagonal table anchored by a green rattan pendant, and the hallway’s antique ladder-back French chair. “We love the ‘moment’ with the old English chest and the modern abstract art behind glass mixed with gorgeous handmade Charlie West lamps,” says Caples. The duo updated the powder room by enveloping it in a green hue and wrapping the sink in a custom skirt. Green vintage sconces with yellow silk shades enhance the color story, while abstract art and a rattan mirror offer an interesting mix.

Wild & Wondrous BAR Jeff Parrott, J. Earl & Sons STONE Walker Zanger ARTWORK AND ACCESSORIES Through J. Earl & Sons
The mountain terrain, wildlife, and sporting activities guided Jeff Parrott in crafting the home bar. “We like to create home bars that are highly functional, but that also have character,” he says of the space that mingles new and vintage pieces. Some of his favorites? “The roe deer horn mounts from the Black Forest, as we always like a bit of taxidermy, our signature cocktail glasses etched with stag heads bring form and function, and the vintage hunting dog bottle opener brings a bit of whimsy,” says Parrott. The bar guru also called to Heather Wren Interiors’ foyer and hallway—which the bar is part of—dashing walls in a mossy green. “From there, we added layers of barware pieces starting with a rattan tray to ground the space and then added glass, metals, wood, antlers, and vintage with patina,” he says, adding: “It’s no real working bar if you don’t have quality spirits. We worked with Blade and Bow Bourbon bottles, which goes with the vibe of the bar.” 111

Elevated Living KITCHEN, LIVING ROOM, & INTERIOR SPECIFICATIONS Lisa Wester, Lisa Wester Interiors
With the exception of the heart pine floors, which were sanded and refinished, Lisa Wester completely gutted and reimagined the kitchen and living room for elevated mountain living. “Before, the spaces were choppy with a small kitchen area, broken-up dining area, and the living room,” says Wester, who replaced the previous double glass doors with a single door to increase the kitchen’s footprint. “I drew a larger island with seating for four, closed the triangle situation, and added a sideboard that gave additional storage for entertaining.” She also extended the kitchen cabinetry 112
to the ceiling and added opulent features such as a showstopping marble hood. The star of the space? Fluted stone walls—that are actually marble tiles—infuse the kitchen with interest and intrigue. Steps away, the living room is dressed with hair-on-hide chairs, a leather sofa, and a custom zinc coffee table. “Paired with an antique handwoven rug and luxurious warm drapery, we set an elevated tone that was both warm and inviting,” says Wester. She’s particularly proud of the fireplace wall that is covered in a textured stone.

Anyone would be delighted to share a meal in the dining room inspired by Elizabeth Stuart’s summer trip to England, which left the designer craving more blooms indoors. “When we saw the hand-blocked print by Jean Monro, we knew we had to incorporate it into the room as if you were dining in the garden surrounded by a lush field,” says Stuart of the tablecloth that dresses a French oak trestle dining table. She also allowed color, texture, and even scent to lead the design. “The textures feel relaxed and approachable, the fragrance of sweet beeswax tapers and rosemary topiaries are enticing, and there’s candy in
colors for your eyes, from wine to mint in every nook,” she says. Vintage Terre de Fer French dinnerware dances around the entry walls and a verdant Murano glass chandelier splashes the room in a green glow. Favored touches include etched glassware that showcases a pattern inspired by a wallpaper created by Dagobert Peche of the Wiener Werkstätte and cascading dendrobium orchids in a lime hue. “They are so whimsical even Dr. Seuss would have envied them,” she says. Another vignette worthy of praise is a geometric iron console edged by blush mohair stools meant for propping up your feet or garden hat. 115

Solidifying the study to be a quiet place to work from home, Eric Ross stayed true to his preferred style of English-traditional, which he says, “always feels at home in the mountains.” When designing, Ross immediately played to the existing heart pine wall paneling. “The homeowner was open to painting the pine to give it an updated look, but I was so enamored with it that I decided to use it as a jumping-off point for the colors that I used 116
in the finished design,” says Ross. He started with the window treatment fabric, which has a cognac color that enhances the existing pine, and then splashed the ceiling in a rich green. “Green is the perfect foil to the cognac color of the walls and the effect is gentlemanly and sedate,” he says. Another favored highlight are the existing Audubon duck prints, which Ross hung from the bookcases for a clear, less cluttered look.

The moment that Francie Hargrove walked into the primary bedroom, she was inspired to capitalize on the warmth of the glazing on the existing walls. The scale and color was perfect for the room,” she says. Hargrove also dotted the space with favored furnishings like an antique Italian mirror that hovers above an antique French chest, as well as a parade of original artwork from Gregg Irby Gallery and Anne Irwin Fine Art. “I enjoy introducing and selecting original art for my clients. It gives a space its personality, and in many cases, is the finishing touch.”

Retreat to the guest bedroom by Kathy Patton, and you’re immediately wowed by the scenic hand-painted wallcovering that holds court behind the bed. “This classic French wallcovering sets the sophisticated tone and color palette for the room,” says Patton, adding that it also offers a stabilizing effect in a space that has no symmetry. “The pair of bedside chests and French chenet lamps further creates this grounding of symmetry.” Floor-to-ceiling draperies celebrate the 12-foot ceilings, while the gilded
canopy bed creates drama. The custom blue and ivory bedding calls to the blue sky in the wallcovering and the blues featured in the art and fabrics. “All pieces were chosen to enhance each other, while not screaming for attention,” she says. Patton also created inviting places to sit and relax, including an area with two rattan King Tubby Italian chairs paired with cowhide ottomans and a marble round drinks table. Emphasizes Patton, “Good design is all about the mix.” 121

When Douglas Hilton considered the design of the bunk room, he had one goal in mind: “We wanted to take back the bunk room,” he says. “What this room shows is a guest bedroom that happens to have bunk beds in it, but can be used by adults or older children. The rest of the room can be a sitting room, home office, or TV room.” Hilton believes the architecture of the space worked in their favor, as the shed roof created height and kept the room bright. Hilton delivered a colorful aesthetic with
a bright rug, bedding, and draperies—and created an eclectic feel that doesn’t follow one distinct period. “We started with the drapery fabric. Manuel Canovas is a master of color mix and can be a bit daunting to work with,” says Hilton. The designer also added antiques for warmth—like the antique secretary that anchors the room—along with contemporary art. Says Hilton, “Modern art tends to be more approachable and helps invite you in and encourages you to stay.” 123

Laundry doesn’t feel like a chore in Joey Butler’s happy laundry room. Informed by the landscapes of Cashiers, Butler swathed walls in a leafpatterned wallcovering and added juxtaposition to the flooring with a layered Turkish vintage runner. “The laundry room is highly functional with the stacked units maximizing the small space. However, the addition of café curtains and the lush wallcovering on both the ceiling and walls allows for a stylish, personalized touch,” says Butler. The designer also created a welcoming upstairs hallway landing that’s layered with distinct elements, including elegant wallpaper mixed with skull wall art and showstoppers like an antique gold Louis Philippe mirror. “The mirror’s beaded trim adds a touch of sophistication to the space,” she says. “And the hallway becomes a transition that not only connects rooms but also introduces a touch of style, ensuring that the entire upstairs feels cohesive and thoughtfully designed.” 124

Since the mudroom serves as a high-traffic entrance, Holly Watson mingled function with style, bedecking the space with color and playful patterns. “The homeowners are dog lovers, so I wanted to design a room that was fun and for the dogs. The wallpaper was the perfect start,” says Watson of the dog-dotted wallcovering. The designer also used a happy orange fabric for the door’s roman shade and repeated the fabric on the bench cushion. “The faux-grass rug was a fun addition,” she adds. For the screened porch, Watson kept the decor sparse so as not to restrict the views, but alluded to nature with a standout drapery fabric with a bug pattern. She also created the perfect nook with a small dining table meant for soaking up the quiet. “I wanted the space to be welcoming and like a spot where you would want to enjoy your breakfast on a cool morning on the Plateau.”

The designing duo particularly loves the custom fabric headboard that spans the entire length of the wall, and details such as scalloped edge bed linens, a kitchenette, and a seating area with a vintage sofa covered in a joyful fabric. “Hospitality and functionality were at the core of each selection,” says Dyleski. The designers also highlighted the room’s painted hardwood floors and tongue-and-groove walls with contrasting layers, like a blue basketweave wallpaper. The room is peppered with antiques to modern elements, including old English chests with brass accents, burlwood finishes, and grasscloth-covered tables.

Aptly named “The Retreat,” Sarah Kowalski capitalized on the stand-alone porch’s outstanding views and transformed its formerly brown-stained wall with two shades of green to allow the structure’s rich architecture to sing. “We painted the ceiling between the stained beams in order to feature the beams versus take away from them,” she says. Interestingly, the entire concept for the space started with a high-impact, patterned Ping-Pong table. “I was immediately drawn to a moody floral antler pattern out of the UK that set the tone for a richly layered, mature hangout and game space, and that pays homage to its natural surroundings,” reveals Kowalski. “The drama is not only in the overall silhouette but also in the massive scale, grounding the table as the heart of the room.” Large-scale woven lighting adds further drama, while textures reign supreme in sculptural leather chairs with braided arms, a hand-knotted wool rug, a dual-colored raffia wallcovering, and twill-weave plaid drapery. Eye-catching artwork from various artists also complements the space.

Dahlia Dreams DAHLIA GARDEN & POTTING SHED Drew English, The English Gardener
Drew English, who’s known as the “dahlia whisperer,” created a major moment with his divine dahlia garden flaunting English and European touches at the rear of the potting shed. “I started growing dahlia tubers in pots back in June, hoping they would bloom just in time for Showhouse, and they did,” he recalls. The gardener relied on hand-forged iron stakes from England to support the dahlias, and then peppered the garden with terracotta pots filled with a mixture of brightly colored annuals and perennials that offer a nice blend of texture, size, and scale. “I always try to use old, reclaimed containers in my gardens. The age of an old clay or stone pot just can’t be replicated,” he advises. English also followed his self-proclaimed design ethos—if it’s needed, why not make it beautiful—when refashioning the former potting shed. After adding paint to the trim and porch floor to match the main home, he drenched the Dutch door in a deep green for a pop of color. “The vibe was meant to be old-school Cashiers, when gardens were residents’ main hobby,” says English, who added decorative shelving, reclaimed containers, and antique tools for both form and function.

LIFE
END NOTE BEHIND THE SCENES
MY MUST-HAVES
MARCEL OLARIU, founder of custom cabinetry company KINGDOM WOODWORKS, spills his at-home delights and kitchen trends forecast Produced by THE EDITORS

paint pick
“Farrow & Ball’s Off-Black is my favorite cabinet paint color. It’s bold and moody, but versatile in a two-tone composition with a warm white oak or walnut finish. It also works well with polished nickel, brass, and bronze. I use this color in a satin finish for kitchens, closets, and vanities, but it also looks amazing in a gloss finish for an elegant bar.” farrow-ball.com
in the details
“Presently, I like to use accent hardware like cremone bolts from Wilmette or Frank Allart for dramatic, tall glass doors in the kitchen or butler’s pantry. These are always a statement piece and have architectural historical value rooted in 18th-century France.” wilmettehardware.com; frankallart.com
talking trends
“I see a major shift back toward classical architecture taking shape this year. That will trickle into more elaborate decorative detail in cabinet design and warmer color palettes. I am also hoping for new technology that will make the microwave obsolete for obvious health and quality of food reasons.”
new year’s resolution
“Quality of life is very important to me, so I am working toward a better balance between work, rest, exercise, and church.” 136
morning must-have
“I start every morning drinking a flat white. Illy coffee beans with organic grass-fed milk and a teaspoon of honey are the two ingredients that usually do the trick. My Jura espresso machine allows me to customize the strength of the espresso and the amount of milk and foam using touchscreen technology. The end result is always flawless.” illy.com; us.jura.com

“Drawers have the ability to transform a kitchen. Everything below counter height has to be either drawers, or some kind of pull-out system. It’s the most efficient use of the space and by far more practical from an access point of view. I frequently like to trick the eye for aesthetic reasons, using a split-panel design (pictured right) or pinned drawer fronts. Both of these techniques give us the freedom to do one thing on the facade and something completely different behind.” kingdomwoodworks.com
cozy cooking
“I always prefer a home-cooked meal to restaurant food. My wife and I make a signature mushroom chicken with heavily buttered mashed potatoes and a cucumber salad. There is nothing better than that anytime of year.”
