WHAT DID YOUR DREAM HOME look like during the early stages of the pandemic? Or, more pointedly, what were the elements of your home that became blatantly obvious that needed attention—whether immediately or when the proverbial smoke cleared? KAREN FERGUSON OF HARRISON DESIGN has long loved marble and used the classic material as a catalyst for her work. It was no different in this bathroom renovation, but it finally was the right time to use a blue celeste marble that she had adored for years. The designer was thrilled when her client took the plunge with her and the marble’s icy sheen. “She just trusted me,” says Ferguson. “She liked the sparkle, so we jumped in and let it dictate the whole bathroom.” Ferguson embraced the baby blues, greens and whites in the marble to design a spa environment. The space shimmers from the marble slabs on the vanity countertop, tub backdrop and floating shower bench, as well as the micromosaic heated floors, white marble in the curbless his-and-her steam shower and the antique-style tub. Working on a renovation in 2020 provided obstacles, including material shortages. For example, the mini mosaic floors, which even sparkle at night, came from four locations. “Working on something beautiful that’s going to elevate someone’s life just a little bit made it a rewarding escape during a pandemic,” she says. “Creating beautiful things is what every designer lives for.” The formerly dark and awkward space felt larger with the combination of color, light and reflective materials. A modern twist was to use custom painted glass panels in the white wood cabinetry by Block & Chisel with crystal drawer pulls. Ferguson incorporated the glass and marble while staying true to the traditional architecture of the home. Existing archways with their gentle curves were retained, and the style of the cabinetry, sconces and chandelier further softened the modern leanings. “Clients who take a risk with you are the most rewarding,” she says. “It’s scary, but it’s so gratifying when it comes together.” See Resources, Back of Book.

THE NARRATIVE IN THE DESIGN for a new Lake Toxaway home was that it had existed for a generation or two, and Joel Kelly and Whitney Ray imagined that the bathroom was a side porch that had been enclosed to create the master bath. Common elements in lake living, such as painted wood siding and bricklike floors of porcelain tile, were used for authenticity and functionality in the home for longtime Atlanta-based clients. They frequently asked themselves: “Does it feel like it could have been here for a very long time?” Those answers resulted in incorporating materials and ideas that were a first for them in a bathroom project, says Kelly, owner of Joel Kelly Design and a partner with Ray in Wyeth Ray Interiors. 18

Seeking to provide light, privacy and views, they used clerestory windows and transoms above the tub entry. The white palette, seen in the walls, ceiling and glazed ceramic tile in the tub space, also contribute to the charm. “What’s great about us working together is that almost every conversation was back and forth about not just interiors versus architecture, but the two of them really working together,” says Ray. Bronze cabinetry hardware mixes with unlacquered brass plumbing that will patina with the 20

age of the house, she adds. The pair accomplished a high-styled, yet rustic feel with choices like raw white oak cabinetry and an 8-foot-long bench. A Walker Zanger oiled soapstone also added the romantic notion of permanence. “If we can help transport you to a time that feels more relaxed and easygoing, and also bring back a memory from childhood of what it was like to be in those places through the decoration,” Kelly says, “I think that’s our goal.” See Resources, Back of Book.

TWO BIG ASKS—no tub and no shower glass—caused Theresa Ory to design this master bathroom with a “never done before” mentality. The personal stake was huge because her client was her spouse, and the house was their own. The bathroom project was part of a larger remodel that had turned room openings into elliptical curves. “The curvature that we brought into the bathroom was part of the story that we were building throughout the house,” she says. A statement zero-entry shower with a sculptural wall accentuates the play of natural light and shadow in its design. “With the footprint we had and the window placement where it was, this was basically my creative solution to follow his points and desires, but also maximize the usability,” she says. Cognizant that texture is part of how people experience the space, she conducted extensive research before choosing concrete for the shower and walls. Brass finishes and honed marble floors— laid in a French limestone pattern—add warmth. “Ultimately, this space feels organic, yet tailored, sculptural and serene,” she says. A floating wood vanity topped with green J’adore quartzite balances the other side of the room. “The quartzite is glorious,” she says. “I seriously hugged it in the stone showroom. It reminds me of the ocean.” Ory draws inspiration from coastal, Italian Baroque and Spanish Mission styles in her design aesthetic that’s “simplistic in nature but inherently nuanced.” This bathroom, she says, is best described as “old-world coastal charm.” Working with the contractor team to accomplish the vision, which involved “failing fast over and over again” until it was right, were the biggest challenges, she says. “It was also the most exciting, rewarding, wonderful reality to see it come to fruition.” See Resources, Back of Book.

MODERN DESIGN DOESN’T HAVE to be reserved for new construction, as Julie Witzel demonstrates in this bath suite in a remodeled Ansley Park abode. The 1880s bungalow had undergone years of updates that resulted in an inefficient hodgepodge of outdated spaces, she says. The redesign, which took advantage of an unused second guest bedroom, carved out a corridor that led to his-and-her bath suites, separate closets and a morning bar. Witzel drew from inspiration pictures of freestanding column-type pedestal sinks for the vanity area of “her” bath, but she still needed counter space. The solution: custom round concrete sinks that contrast the bleached walnut vanities. “You have to find that good balance between the slicker materials, like the concrete and the quartz, and the warmth and heaviness of the walnut to make sure that it doesn’t skew one way or the other,” she says. Softer, organic forms include horn hardware and sculptural lighting in bronze and smoked glass. The quartz wall cladding in the shower extends throughout “her bath.” Instead of another material change in “his bath” beyond the walnut linen closet and vanity and concrete sink tops, she placed a mirror and the Stiletto LED Lungo bath bar above the vanity. “We had to be more selective and edit out some details so that it didn’t feel busy,” says Witzel. The baths and morning bar showcase the clients’ fine art photography collection, which appears in harmony with the fixtures and finishes. A dresser by Skylar Morgan Furniture built into a niche in “her bath” also bears display space. “We have the opportunity, even with older homes, to modernize them for each individual’s needs while still being respectful of the original architecture,” she says. BLACK-AND-WHITE MOSAIC tile floors in a hexagon pattern serve as a red carpet of sorts to the showstopping shower in a new Buckhead residence. The bold motif continues into his-and-her showers that are flanked by an elegant mirrored freestanding tub. Source’s Cydney Mitchell achieved a timeless blend of feminine and masculine—a signature of hers—with the tile floors, the soft, white walls and the dark lines of shower and custom vanities. “I love massive focal points in spaces,” the designer says. “And this focal point is the balance with the shower. Everything is very symmetrical in this space.” Mitchell chose the tile pattern after seeing it impress both sexes in a previous bathroom project. The cast-iron tub reflects the hexagon tile, warranting further attention. “It kind of just grew from there,” she says. “The two vanities are very dark, and I wanted that to balance

with how dark the shower was.” The linear lines of sconces play off the vanity in the finely detailed bathroom. The scale of the room, 21x15, caused Mitchell to consider how to make the expansive space feel quaint. The four circular windows and the Venetian plaster walls and ceiling balance the black elements. “There’s a lot of black, but it still feels open and airy,” she says. Curves follow throughout the space, seen in the tub, the 12-foot ceiling, the vanities and the polished brass fixtures with gooseneck designs from Waterworks. Opposite the shower, the dual curvilinear and fluted vanities with countertops anchor the wall. “We wanted to have more dimension and texture in this space,” she says. “We just wanted to show that there were layers to the space.” See Resources, Back of Book.

IN REAL ESTATE, the only constant is that nothing ever stays the same. A new study by PropertyShark, a national real estate research blog, examined real estate price changes in Atlanta over a decade. It found that homes bought in 2009 resold in 2019 with a 28% price increase, which equates to $88,000 on average when adjusted for inflation. Atlanta homes in the $100K to $250K range fared best, recording a 45% increase over the 2009 figures. Harry Norman Realtors agent Ashley Webb (harrynorman.com) has seen this trend play out in real time. “Before 2008, there was a frenzy to buy because money was so cheap,” she recalls of the precrash time when individuals were buying multiple homes. It’s a big contrast to now when there’s an inventory shortage fueled by supply chain

Many of her clients feel the urgency to secure property ahead of projected inflation and likely interest rate hikes, both of which will have a chilling effect on the market. Regardless, seasoned agents like Webb, who has been in the business for 17 years, are accustomed to market fluidity. “I know it’s never going to stay the same,” she says. “We will always adapt as an industry.”

Naomi Von Habersham MY INTRODUCTION TO LUXURY BATHROOMS came from old movies, specifically those high-style films of the 1930s and ’40s, in which glamorous leading ladies would primp for a night on the town in their sparkling, opulent movie-set bathrooms. Remember the scene from the 1939 film The Women in which Joan Crawford’s husband-stealing character, Crystal, is luxuriating in her cut-glass bathtub, immersed in a bubble bath while talking on the phone to her boyfriend? That was the first time I had ever seen a telephone in the bathroom, and I was so enamored with the notion that by the time I got my first grown-up bathroom in the 1980s, I promptly had a phone installed next to the tub. What a folly, because the truth is that I rarely used it for fear of dropping the receiver into the bath water. Male film characters sometimes got elaborately decorated bathrooms too, such as Waldo Lydecker, the urbane villain in the 1944 film noir, Laura. A writer and wit with a cruel streak, Lydecker would compose his newspaper column while in the bathtub, feverishly pecking away on a typewriter suspended over the tub. It certainly wasn’t the idea of writing while bathing that has stayed with me all these years; instead, it was Lydecker’s bathtub. A precursor to those freestanding tubs favored by design legend David Hicks, Lydecker’s tub, which was encased in richly veined dark marble, projected out into the middle of a very well-appointed bath-dressing room replete with a built-in wall radio and, yes, a telephone. It’s funny how all of these years later, my idea of a luxury bathroom harkens back to those long-ago movies: It should be predominately white, just like those ’30s-era MGM film sets, with marble and mirror. The light fixtures should evoke Art Deco style, and there should be a few Neo-Baroque decorative accents, similar to the over-the-top pastiche in those fizzy Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies. Though only a figment of my imagination, my luxury bathroom is, in the words of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, ready for its close-up.

COCKTAILS ARE SHAKING, artfully plated dishes are flowing and jazz and soul legends can be heard above the murmur of social hour. No, this isn’t out of a period piece, it’s The Betty— Atlanta’s finest new supper club-inspired restaurant. Designed by New York City-based firm Goodrich and Ave Bradley, Kimpton Hotel’s global senior vice president of design, The Betty boasts old-Hollywood style that’s set to impress the most glamorous personalities. Handsome midcentury modern details—dark wood, luxe curves in the furniture, and rich jewel tones—enhance the restaurant’s nostalgic air. The sophisticated design is also prevalent in the menu, where executive chef Brandon Chavannes showcases his take on American-Continental cuisine. “It’s always exciting for me to explore how food traditions can be so similar in different parts of the world and have almost identical philosophies and approach,” says Chavannes. “We wanted to dive into this to make sure people can have a new experience while also having the sense of comfort and nostalgia.” Some of those diversified dishes include the Betty’s Bagel with smoked salmon for breakfast or chicken liver mousse with Sicilian pistachio, port and strawberry during dinner service. The beverage menu has a wide range of wines and cocktails, from a classic sidecar to the playful Sunset in Guadalajara. Designed by architect Linda MacArthur and built by Michael Ladisic of Ladisic Fine Homes, the contemporary manse’s covered front porch boasts a pair of facing fireplaces and a tall bank of steelframed windows. “The house is bigger than the sum of its parts,” says Ladisic. “Our goal was to elevate the design and make it memorable.”

STANDING ATOP A HILL on a forested property in an exclusive Atlanta zip code, the rambling slurried brick abode offers a series of dazzling, often unexpected moments that never fail to delight its owners, a fashionable thirtysomething couple known for their weekly family gatherings and swanky soirees. On the covered front porch, for example, a pair of custom wooden swings dangle from ropes in front of mismatched facing fireplaces. Just beyond, a bank of steelframed windows spotlights a view of the lush rear courtyard. “You look out onto an emerald green,” says architect Linda MacArthur, who collaborated with builder Michael Ladisic and designers Kelly Wolf Anthony and Matthew Quinn on the project. “The clients wanted the home to be open and welcoming.”

Cleverly Contained

from top to bottom Holland & Sherry draperies serve as a backdrop for art in the breakfast area, where an upholstered bench and two leather chairs surround a stone table from Bradley. Ideal for a house with three young children and a beloved pooch, the home was designed with several short Dutch doors that pocket into the walls.

Outfitted with painted fluted wall paneling, the front foyer opens to the centrally located dining room, which has Venetian plaster-clad walls and rounded corners that “soften the space,” explains MacArthur. A multipendant chandelier with glass globes suspended from varying lengths floats over a long dining table that seats 14. “It’s like an art piece,” says Wolf Anthony. “It brings the ceiling down and makes the room feel a little cozier.” Fluted paneled walls also distinguish the adjacent bar, a luxurious space outfitted with sleek black metal cabinetry and illuminated shelving. Doubling as a corridor, the moody space leads to the bright and airy great room, which has 14-foothigh coffered ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the courtyard. “Our goal was to elevate the design and make it memorable,” says Ladisic, crediting the many talented trades who worked on this project. “I think it’s going to be an iconic building.” In the kitchen, a sleek black metal hood floats in front of one bank of windows, perfectly complementing the black metal and gunmetal enamel La Cornue range. Adding another layer, the entire niche is surrounded with light quartzite. 61

“This space is like Grand Central, and it’s always been an important room for the clients,” says kitchen and bath designer Matthew Quinn, who collaborated with the couple on their prior home. “We put a great deal of energy and resources into making it a phenomenal space.” That also holds true for the lower level. Modeled after Pinewood Social, a hot Nashville hangout, its exposed brick walls, steel beams and ductwork create a chic, industrial backdrop for a suite of entertainment areas, including a luxe bar and a two-lane bowling alley. Not even the face masks everyone wore during the big midpandemic reveal could disguise the owners’ beaming grins as they toured their new home. “This house is spectacular, comfortable and livable at the same time,” says Wolf Anthony. “It’s a gorgeous home that this family can enjoy for many years ahead.” See Resources, Back of Book. 65

NESTLED ON A SPRAWLING 3-acre property with towering oak trees and an ambling, cobblestone-bordered gravel driveway, this gracious 5,800-square-foot family home has all the charisma of a rural escape. So much so that, upon arrival, you’d never guess it was located in the heart of North Buckhead. Designed by architect Norman D. Askins and interior designer Susan Bozeman for a couple and their young daughter, the home itself exudes farmhouse charm, featuring a stone-and-wood facade, multiple outdoor living areas and, of course, a gracious front porch.

“There’s nothing more welcoming in the world than a house with a porch out front,” says Askins. “This project was really based on a Southern precedent for a farmhouse.” Inside, beamed ceilings, wide-board white oak floors and stone fireplaces echo the relaxed charm of the exterior. And though there’s a mix of living spaces—including a large open kitchen and dining space, a formal dining room, a more traditional living room and library, and a contemporary downstairs media room—Askins and Bozeman worked closely to ensure nothing felt too cavernous.

To ensure that the home felt connected to the surrounding property, Askins worked with landscape architect Jonathan Bussell to plan the motor gates, driveway, and pool. Taking advantage of the privacy offered by the property’s size, Askins incorporated large windows throughout to offer views of the surrounding gardens, which were overhauled and redesigned in 2020 by landscape designer Carson McElheney. “We changed the landscape by adding trees, large specimen boxwoods and heirloom camellias, and we created cutting gardens that include annuals, perennials and 85

To create a sense of unity, Bozeman anchored the home with a soothing color palette of smoky gray-blue, taupe and white, mixing in both transitional and antique furnishings to add a sense of history. “The color palette is very soothing,” says the designer. “A softer palette with a lot of texture is my aesthetic, and it really does make it calm, comfortable and timeless.” Spaces like the family room and side porch—where the family spends time yearround—were purposefully designed for gathering. “Whether having a few friends over or hosting a large event, this house can accommodate everyone and feel appropriate,” says Bozeman. “Although some spaces are large, we ensured that every space has a variety of seating so that it can be as comfortable for two as for 20. It’s refined, but relaxed.”

Formal Flair

In the formal dining room, a Schumacher wallcovering adds visual verve. The upholstered dining chairs are Bernhardt, upholstered in a Cowtan & Tout linen velvet. The wood dining chairs are antique, upholstered in a Rose Tarlow fabric.

WHILE LOCATED ON A WELL-KNOWN thoroughfare in one of the city’s toniest zip codes, the French pavilion-style abode’s stucco walls conceal a lush private courtyard that belies its central location. That sense of quiet serenity inspired a kindhearted local couple to buy the 1980s-era property despite its dated vibe, ultimately commissioning architect Keith Summerour and interior designer Barbara Westbrook to help them make it their own. What started out as a down-to-the-studs renovation, however, turned into a total rebuild to address construction problems and severe water damage. Summerour used the opportunity to enhance the structure, modifying its design in small but impactful ways. To raise its profile and add a sense of sorely needed grandeur, he elongated the pitch of the mansard roof and clad the front and back exterior with ornate limestone. 99

Recessed into the plaster range, a carved wooden panel from A. Tyner Antiques adds a bespoke quality to the kitchen, which is outfitted with white oak cabinetry from Morgan Creek Cabinets, soapstone countertops from Walker Zanger and limestone tile flooring by Paris Ceramics.

“Because the house is so close to the street, the scale of the building needs to be appropriate and elegant, not only in the materiality but also proportion,” says Summerour, noting it is styled after the weekend country homes Parisians enjoyed in the 17th and 18th centuries. That sense of sophistication also informs the oval-shaped, domed front foyer, which has plaster walls accented by limestone detailing and reclaimed parquet wood flooring laid in a custom elongated diamond pattern. Steps away is the gracious formal living room, a long salon-style space with two distinct seating areas that complement the room’s unique shape. On one side of the French doors to the courtyard, a rolled arm sofa and relaxed skirted chairs, all in white linen, surround an antique brass cocktail table in front of an elegant limestone fireplace mantel. 102

“They wanted an elegant home that was refined yet inviting and warm,” says Westbrook, who worked on the project with Elizabeth Hanson. “We selected beautiful, rich materials and incorporated lots of texture.” Indeed, reclaimed wood beams play off the limestone tile flooring, custom oak cabinetry and dark soapstone countertops in the kitchen. And a small mosaic tile backsplash adds subtle visual texture to the plaster hood, which has an integrated antique carved wooden decorative panel. “Every kitchen should have one or two moments that set it apart,” says Westbrook. According to the designer, the home’s polished yet comfortable, tranquil milieu perfectly reflects her clients and the way they approached the project. “They were the warmest, most genteel and generous couple you’d ever want to meet, and there was never a tense moment,” she says, recalling how the wife teared up when talking about the project. “They were so excited about this project and feel so blessed.” See Resources, Back of Book. 106
