MY SUMMER PROJECT this year is to build my own coffee table. I’ve dusted off my drill, tapped number-savvy friends to triple-check my measurements and have finally reached the stage where it’s time to roll up my sleeves and put my—perhaps overly ambitious—aspirations to the test. And while my passion project is on a much smaller and far less advanced scale, I imagine this is the thrill our design industry professionals feel as their projects start to take shape. Our July issue honors the painstaking design process that brings dreams into reality. Whether the Buckhead home that began as a downsize and grew into a 30,000-square-foot abode tailor-made for the

homeowner’s desires (page 56), a historic Ansley Park residence that carefully unifies past and present (page 76) or the Tuxedo Park manse that is the latest project in a years-long relationship between client and designers (page 92), these homes are a testament to the unmatched talent—and detail-oriented mindset—that our local design community carries closely. In a similar spirit, our three Bath of the Year Award winners (page 14) embrace the exhale, providing the type years through clean finishes and other high-style design elements. As you peruse the following pages, we hope this issue offers a momentary retreat of its own. Enjoy!

Caribbean Character
LORRAINE ENWRIGHT crafts a tailor-made bath full of resort-style touches and luxe details Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN Photographed by JEFF HERR
WHEN TASKED WITH designing a new home for a fun-loving pair who love to travel, architectural and interior designer Lorraine Enwright of Intuitive Dwellings by Enwright Design Collaborative Inc. set out to create an environment that matched her clients’ adventurous personalities. For the home’s main bath, the clients wanted “a serene place of respite with just a touch of resort-style luxury for a day-to-day vacation experience,” says Enwright. When the designer and her clients came upon a showstopping Caribbean-blue marble, they knew they’d found their centerpiece. “My client said that it looked like a waterfall and she couldn’t imagine any better way to wake up each morning than by bathing in the Caribbean blue waters,” recalls Enwright. After learning there was just a single slab left, they opted to use the entire piece vertically on the main shower wall as a “waterfall feature,” framing it with white marble for contrast. “We built the rest of the design around that water element,” says Enwright, who used mosaic Carrara marble tiles on the floor to connect the shower to the waterfall tub and “create the feel of a bubbling brook.” The furniture-like tub was also a labor of love, designed for the wife, who enjoyed the look of slipperstyle tubs but needed surface space for bath products or a glass of champagne. “I had to search for a fresh way to give her what I call functional beauty,” notes Enwright, who continued the mosaic tile up the front of the tub deck. Along the perimeter, Enwright worked with Bell Cabinetry & Design to color-match the cabinetry paint to the Carrara marble, a nod to the weathered grey tones in many beachside communities and the perfect complement to the serene surfaces. “The bathroom was truly and uniquely conceived for this client’s exact wants and needs.” See Resources, Back of Book. 15

Mediterranean Escape Husband-and-wife duo CYNTHIA and KEVIN PORCHE channel modern Tuscan luxury in this bath renovation Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN Photographed by KELLY BLACKMON FOR
EMILY FOLLOWILL PHOTOGRAPHY Styled by THEA BEASLEY
INSPIRED BY A ROMANTIC VILLA they’d stayed in during a trip to Tuscany, a pair of Atlanta homeowners knew they wanted to capture the same sense of European luxury in the redesign of their primary bath. To bring their vision to life, they tapped their longtime design team: husband-and-wife duo Cynthia Porche of Porche Home and Kevin Porche of Elegant Properties. Having worked with their clients for nearly a decade, the duo knew exactly how to strip away dated materials and create a space that fit their clients’ desires. To resurrect its potential, walls and doors were removed to provide space for sensible storage elements. Bleached white oak ceiling beams, cabinetry and casings tune in to the European aesthetic and provide a calming contrast to the bath’s focal point: mosaic Carrara marble tiles, which continue from the shower onto the wall behind the floating Toto tub. “Every project begins with a ‘love’ element that sets the tone,” says Cynthia. “To us, the tile was that element.”
To avoid competing with the tile while creating a jewel-box feel, the design team chose Calacatta gold quartz countertops and chrome hardware for a chic yet subtle effect. “You feel as if you’ve been swept away to an exotic resort,” says Cynthia. “And that’s how a home should always feel—as if it were designed exactly for what you love.” Completing the ambience are modern luxuries tailored to the clients, including a built-in refrigeration unit for water bottles and cosmetics, a towel-warming drawer, heated floors and a fog-free mirror in the shower, which the husband uses for shaving. “Cynthia and I bounce ideas back and forth and work to implement them without compromising function and luxury,” says Kevin. “We’re always in sync, and that’s what sets us apart.” See Resources, Back of Book. 21

Clean Slate
Streamlined silhouettes and sleek materials pave the way in this bath renovation by MEG HERLIHY Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN
WITH ITS SLEEK LINES and modern materials, you’d never know that this fresh, remodeled bath was once dated, cramped and jam-packed with 1990s design trends. “The aim of this space was to create a bathroom that reflected the client’s simple aesthetic but in a way that was not too austere,” says designer Meg Herlihy, who reconfigured and refreshed the space with spa-like elements that felt minimalist and modern, yet comfortable. To achieve this streamlined look, Herlihy worked with Southern Plaster to install Moroccan tadelakt plaster—a water-resistant and mildew-resistant material—in the shower. “It’s the ideal material for a space where the look of plaster is desired, but water resistance is 26
needed,” notes Herlihy. “Using tadelakt in the shower also eliminates the need for grout lines, which creates a seamless aesthetic—and makes cleaning a breeze.” To add a sense of movement to the monochromatic palette, the designer paired floating, slab-door cabinetry with brushed gold hardware and Calacatta gold marble countertops. Likewise, she added a book-matched marble accent wall behind the tub, which is positioned to take advantage of the skylight window overhead. Also adding warmth is a recessed electric fireplace opposite the main shower. “This wall is the first thing you see when you walk into the main bathroom space,” says Herlihy. “The fireplace serves as both a focal point—creating subtle ambiance when lit—and as a heat source, which is a particularly nice touch after stepping out of the shower.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Designers employ creative solutions in bathrooms to meet clients’ needs and aesthetics. That ingenuity is being tested due to shortages and extended lead times for items such as tile, cabinetry and plumbing fixtures. “My prediction is that we’re probably going to be in this predicament for the rest of the year, at least if the trends are staying consistent with where they are right now,” says WHITNEY RAY, principal designer of WYETH RAY INTERIORS. Lead times for custom mosaic tile stretch to three months. CYDNEY MITCHELL and BRITTANY STAFFORD of SOURCE say one work-around is reinventing patterns with field tile, which has shorter wait times and comes in sizes such as 12 inches by 24 inches, to give clients a look they love. They’re ordering more tile “overages” in case the design changes. Plumbing fixtures have lead times up to 16 weeks. All but one item in the entire order may be available, which Ray says forces her and her clients to decide if they want to choose a different showerhead or faucet. “What is really shocking and making us change the way we do things is the lack of items I once could always find in stock,” says Ray. “I took those things for granted.” Once ubiquitous items like marble subway tiles have 24-week waits. Some cabinet workshops are only booking projects for 2023, says Mitchell. Source’s strategy with clients is to strenuously plan in advance, remain in constant contact with vendors, follow up weekly with logistics and be transparent throughout.

Ponce City Market is expected to grow by 700,000 square feet with two 21-story buildings—one with apartments for the 55-and-up market, and another with furnished rentals to compete with Airbnb and hotels—and a four-story loft office building. “Mixed-use is becoming more sophisticated,” says MICHAEL PHILLIPS, president of developer JAMESTOWN. “It’s more design-driven, more customer-specific in terms of meeting the needs of different cohorts of people.” Jamestown will not use tax incentives for this phase. Signal House, with 163 one- to threebedroom apartments, is expected to open by the end of 2023. Phillips says active adults are an underserved market, whether downsizing or “co-locating” to be near family in Atlanta. The

Naomi Von Habersham IN MY OPINION, THE LATE, GREAT British designer David Hicks rarely made a misstep. The man was a genius with pattern, and he could arrange table objects like few others. (No wonder he was the one who coined the term “tablescape.”) But there was one Hicks trademark that I could never get on board with: placing a bathtub in the middle of a bedroom. Look through any of his books from the 1970s and you’ll inevitably see a photo or two of a freestanding bathtub—usually encased in wood paneling— that was located in a bedroom with wall-to-wall wool carpeting. I could never understand how one was supposed to bathe in a tub full of water and then step out of the tub without getting the carpet wet, even if a bath mat was being used. Plus, I assume that when someone was cleaning the bathtub, there was the real possibility of Comet or Ajax cleanser accidentally getting spilled on the gorgeous, and likely expensive, carpeting that Hicks was known to use. The whole setup seemed like a disaster in the making. Another design trend that left me equally baffled occurred in the go-go ’80s, when some designers and homeowners, perhaps looking for yet another space to decorate to the gills, began furnishing bathrooms with so much stuff that cleaning must have become an utter nightmare. I remember seeing photos of bathrooms that had so much unnecessary fabric in them—I’m talking intricate balloon shades, swags hung around bathtub niches, and vanity stools whose skirts were so full that crinolines had to have been used. All I could think of was how much dust all of that fabric must have been holding. So, too, with the dried floral arrangements, often placed tubside, that were also something of a fad back then. Thankfully, common sense usually now prevails when it comes to bathroom design. Whether they’re modern, minimalist or classic, today’s bathrooms almost always have one thing in common: They’re practical, and to me, that’s a sign of good design.

WITH CUISINE JUST AS ALLURING as its name, Dirty Rascal has cemented itself as an Italian favorite among the Buckhead dining scene. Located inside the newly constructed Thompson Hotel on East Paces Ferry Road, chef Todd Ginsberg and the Rye Restaurants team successfully transformed the ground-floor space into a swanky, yet comfortable backdrop to enjoy a variety of family-style Italian-American fare. “Many of us grew up with Italian-American food, whether it be spaghetti and meatballs or lasagna—it’s all common comfort food,” says Ginsberg. “Our goal for Dirty Rascal wasn’t to reinvent that wheel, but rather to serve that food with added depth, flavor and thoughtfulness to provide our visitors with an experience that allows them to enjoy the dishes they already know and love—with a twist—in an elevated and sophisticated environment.” Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Dirty Rascal serves up fresh pasta made in-house, hearty menu items like rigatoni alla vodka, veal parmigiana and meatballs, and an espresso bar. Studio 11 Design was the brains behind Dirty Rascal’s old-school New York aura, with interiors mimicking the sophistication of the menu offerings. Think midcentury modern elements featuring a palette of leather, black-and-white tiles and marble. “It’s a cozy atmosphere with a midcentury design that ties in seamlessly with the Thompson Buckhead hotel,” says Ginsberg. “The dim lighting and red leather oversize booths add a vintage yet glamorous feel, creating an atmosphere that can be dressed up or down for any occasion.” Ginsberg notes that it’s his goal for everyone who walks through the doors of Dirty Rascal to have a legendary time. “‘Dirty Rascal’ stems from the nickname my mom gave me as a teenager for my knack of getting into trouble; so the restaurant is fun and playful at its core,” says Ginsberg. “That spirit really shines through with our theatrical tableside preparations, whimsical fox logo and personalized service.” dirtyrascal.com

OFFERING BOTH INTIMATE AND GRAND spaces on a more than 1-acre lot in Ansley Park, the sprawling early-1900s shingle-style abode seemed like an ideal home for a cosmopolitan couple who envisioned themselves hosting fundraisers, galas and large social gatherings when it’s not just the two of them. Although recently updated with a spacious rear addition by architect Linda MacArthur and Ladisic Fine Homes, the design-minded couple asked interior designers Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos to make it feel more like them. “We respected the home’s history and made the whole place live in a modern way,” says Williams. Indeed, the designers laid new hardwood flooring to better match the updated flooring in the addition, sanding and refinishing the original trim to match. Some details weren’t so sacrosanct: Housed in a segmented arch niche, for example, Saint Laurent marble now clads the fireplace, replacing the more ornate wood detailing. “It adds a bit of grandeur,” says Williams.

That was also the idea in the dining room, where the original fireplace’s forest green tile inspired the color of the handpainted wallcovering, which has gold ink veining—a nod to the Japanese concept of kintsugi, in which broken pottery is repaired with the still-visible element. “I wanted the walls to speak for themselves,” says Papadopoulos, “elegant, graphic and beautiful.” One of many brass accents, a multiglobe brass chandelier enhances the sense of drama. Indeed, the space opens to a large terrace overlooking a square swimming pool with scalloped corners—one of several outdoor living areas by landscape architect John Howard, who selected a simple plant palette punctuated by strategically placed flowering trees that will add color and fragrance. “It’s a study in greens and textures that’s designed to bloom throughout the year,” says Howard. While requiring an all-hands-on-deck approach, the designers completed the project in time for the homeowner’s graduation celebration. As requested, however, the place works just as well for quiet nights at home. “They and their pets use and enjoy it,” says Williams. “I’m proud of the fact that they’re so comfortable here.” See Resources, Back of Book.

THERE’S SOMETHING MAGICAL about building a relationship with long-standing design clients and seeing their lives—and tastes—evolve with each new project. Which is precisely why this Tuxedo Park home felt so special to Mandy Mayers and Jessica Roan, co-owners of Atlanta design firm and shop Interior Philosophy. Having worked with their clients, Derek and Virginia Elmerick, for nearly a decade, Mayers and Roan have seen the family grow from three to five—and their personal aesthetics take shape. “Both of their styles have evolved from when we first met them,” says Roan. “Derek leans

modern and minimalistic, while Virginia likes things more traditional with more color.” Because of this, the pair knew they would need to balance multiple styles when crafting the interiors of the new-build home, which was designed by architect Woody Vaughan of Norwood Architects and built by David and Kathy Siegel of Siegel Construction & Design. To complement the soaring ceilings, light floors and grid-pattern, steel-frame windows—while also blending Derek and Virginia’s respective styles—the designers anchored the interiors with a transitional aesthetic,

updating traditional pieces with modern touches and adding contrast with rich colors, stylish artwork and bold patterns. In the living room, for instance, an antique rifle rack with an upholstered, zebra-hide top serves as an eye-catching coffee table. Likewise, the designers commissioned geometric, handpainted wall panels by Porter Teleo to add a pop of interest behind the primary bedroom’s canopy bed. Throughout the home, the designers incorporated the Elmericks’ personal

collection of artwork sourced through Bill Lowe Gallery. “We had fun with wallpapers and mixed in patterns from all different sources—some old and some new, using zebra as almost a neutral throughout,” says Mayers. “We tried to take different elements and mix them together so it wasn’t a super matchy look.” In addition to pattern and color, Mayers and Roan also infused the home with natural textures to add interest and pull in the exterior’s lush green landscaping afforded by the abundance of

windows. White oak accents via pieces like the foyer’s antique console table and the breakfast room’s custom dining table bring a layer of warmth to the home, while faux-bois planters housing leafy plants add a sense of life. Providing a dose of fun is the kid-friendly terrace level, where entertaining is the name of the game thanks to a bar area, movie screen and Brunswick pool table. “Like everybody else during the height of the pandemic, they knew they would be spending a lot more time at home and were in need of in-house entertainment for their three boys,” says Mayers. And now with another successful project for the Elmericks under their belt, the designers are thrilled with the final product. “We were able to think outside the box and try new things to meet the style of the house,” says Roan. “The blend really gives it such a distinct personality.” See Resources, Back of Book.

END NOTE IN LOVE WITH...
Pastel Purple
Lilacs and lavenders whisper a quiet elegance. Whether it’s through paint, wallpaper or a throw pillow, the barely there hues add a bit of magic to any room they inhabit. Lilac and lavender are also perfectly suited for both classic and contemporary spaces—and everything in between—so perhaps they’re the versatile colors you didn’t know you needed, until now. —Clinton Smith Paint in Sugared Almond from Farrow & Ball’s Archive Collection, farrow-ball.com
