MY CHILDHOOD BEDROOM featured yellow walls with a soft green-and-white plaid wallpaper trim. The room immediately greeted with a sense of serenity every time I entered, and perhaps that’s why I felt a change was due when my moody pre-teen years hit me like a storm. My idea: paint a punchy red—emphasis on the punch—accent wall and the others a soft sky blue. And while I can’t help but cringe at my short-lived stint as a budding interior designer, that bedroom, despite its particularly exuberant face lift, taught my young mind the influence of crafting spaces that make you happy. Our June issue properly follows suit, showcasing three Atlanta residences that were masterfully brought into their

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: Tell us, how did you get your start as a floral designer? CANAAN MARSHALL: I was working at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in my hometown, Macon, Georgia. While I was there I would see people come to the museum to host parties and events. Helping to plan those events brought me so much joy and I felt inspired to add more to them. That addition just happened to be flowers. AH&L: You’re known as the flower whisperer, and with a charismatic persona to match, you make a lasting impression on most you meet. How do you infuse your vibrant personality into your arrangements? CM: I start with color. I love creating color palettes for the flowers I’m arranging and I think that really expresses who I am. I’m a colorful person and I like to have a great time with my designs. I can provide
structure in my arrangements while still creating a piece that’s over the top. You should never be afraid to enjoy and do flowers like you want to! My motto is “place it and move on.” I don’t ever want to lose my authenticity in my work. AH&L: What are your favorite flowers to work with? CM: I love peonies, roses, hydrangeas and especially phalaenopsis orchids. Really, I love all flowers because I think you should be able to enjoy working with everything you have. AH&L: How do you take your floral arrangements from pretty to exceptional? CM: When I’m designing, the arrangement really comes to me as I’m building it. So, once it starts coming together, I’ll walk out of the room and come back to it with fresh eyes. That really gives me a chance to elevate the design. I can see what I may have missed or what I can tweak in the piece to give it
the “it” factor it’s longing for. AH&L: What was your inspiration for this tabletop? CM: The chargers on the table inspired me a lot. They were so colorful and pretty. I wanted those chargers to really highlight the flowers and vice versa. Then, I added in neutral elements, such as the plates, to enhance the elegance and take the overall palette up a notch. AH&L: Aside from beautiful arrangements, what are your other must-have entertaining items when hosting friends and family? CM: I think the most important things are great food, great conversation... and great champagne! AH&L: What advice would you give those who don’t have a natural green thumb? CM: Just try it! How will you know you won't be good at it? Even if an arrangement doesn’t come out like you imagined, learn from that and try again.

While the old magic came from mineral riches, today’s sparkle springs forth in a different form: a talented assemblage of designers, architects, artists and makers infusing the city with fresh creativity—and a populace eager to indulge in a post-Covid revival. Like a home with a harmonious mix of antiques and modern finds, Birmingham boasts a delightful balance of beautiful old bones and vibrant new energy. Longrespected purveyors and an inspiring new crop of creatives cater with a bevy of new and established shops where locals can source design needs close to home—and visitors can walk away with something special. “Birmingham offers all of the trappings of a large city, but its compact layout allows you to quickly and easily visit many areas,” says Birmingham interior designer Julie Terrell of Julie Terrell Interior Design. “In addition to a vibrant downtown, we are so fortunate to have many wonderful boutiques in the surrounding neighborhoods where you can shop unique stores for designer clothing, art, antiques and furnishings.” Indeed, one can explore many of Birmingham’s neighborhoods— charming enclaves each with its own vibe and vernacular—in a day with ease. In Forest Park, a historic neighborhood near downtown spangled with mature trees and venerable homes, a duo of charming boutiques–Shoppe and General— anchors a refreshing neighborhood renewal that includes Juniper, a hip new gin bar, Red or White, a cozy wine shop and restaurant, and the forthcoming MK Quinlan vintage boutique. Naomi Von Habersham IF YOU HAVE ATTEMPTED TO RENOVATE your home in the last 18 months or so, you know that trying to hire a contractor, plumber, electrician, painter etc. is near impossible. Many, if not most, of them are booked solid for the unforeseeable future, a result of the renovation-madness that has struck so many homeowners, myself included, during the course of the pandemic. And don’t even get me started on the whole supply chain fiasco, because even if you are lucky enough to find a contractor who is free to take on your project, you’re not guaranteed to get the materials you need to actually do the renovation. All of this is why, against my better judgment, I decided to do the renovation of my powder room myself. So let me tell you how that went. First, I removed the existing wallpaper myself, which left the walls a gouged, lumpy mess. Then I decided to remove the floor tile myself using a chisel, which, you guessed it, left the floor a gouged, lumpy mess. I knew better than to do the plumbing and electrical work myself, so I asked my cousin, who claimed to know what he was doing, to remove the existing light fixtures and disconnect the sink. Big mistake. He flooded my powder room and practically electrocuted himself trying to remove the crystalbeaded ceiling fixture, which he dropped onto the bumpy, lumpy concrete floor, shattering it into a million pieces. By that point, my nerves were so shot that I issued a stopwork order on the project. So now, my partially renovated powder room is even uglier than it was before. It has no lights, no running water, walls with pockmarks and a floor so uneven you’re lucky if you don’t twist your ankle just stepping on it. The moral of the story is that unless you truly know what you’re doing, don’t bypass the professionals and embark on a major DIY renovation. Take it from an expert at the perils of doing it yourself. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

OLIVA RESTAURANT GROUP IS THE TEAM behind Ponce City Market’s latest restaurant Atrium. Already familiar with the famous Atlanta food market via her first restaurant, Bellina Alimentari, owner Tal Baum was determined to create a fanciful oasis inside the bustling environment. “Atrium is eclectic and bright with thoughtful design elements like bold florals, expansive tropical leaves and focal walls in a palette of pinks, greens and golds,” says Baum. “A lot of the inspiration comes from my travels and particularly leans on colorful French cafes and Art Deco buildings.” Baum, with a background in architecture and design, collaborated with Smith Hanes Studio to create a blossoming atmosphere complete with pieces from local artisans and craftsmen. Draping arrangements by local floral studio Pinker Times and a wall mural of herons by Savannah-based artist Kipper Millsap are just two examples of unique artistry that occupy the space. “From woodwork throughout the space and hand-painted tiles on the bar to floral installations and an imaginative mural inspired by the iridescent plumage of the glossy ibis, each detail of the interior is made for, and by, the community,” says Baum. As for the fare, Atrium focuses on a modern American menu with European influences. “We wanted to create dishes that would captivate our guests just as the ambience does,” says executive culinary director Brandon Hughes. “The menu features seasonally driven, vegetable-forward appetizers, crudo, light pastas and larger entrees for sharing.” While dining at this establishment, a colorful cocktail in hand is a necessity. Atrium’s beverage director Demario Wallace has declared their Polibbean Punch the drink of the summer. “It’s bright, full of flavor and a tropical explosion with fresh fruit and spice,” says Wallace. Needless to say, it’s evident that the restaurant’s interior and cuisine go hand in hand to create a meaningful dining experience. YEARNING FOR A HOME with more natural light and better circulation, a Buckhead couple considered selling the 1920s-era brick Georgian-style abode where they had raised their children. Until, that is, architects Andrew Cogar and David Van Groningen of Historical Concepts showed them how they could transform it into the sort of house they had long envisioned. “It feels fresher and lighter,” says Van Groningen. “[The wife] wanted to keep the spirit of the house but didn’t feel beholden to match everything exactly.” Relocating the original staircase from the front foyer to an adjoining room, for example, created a larger, brighter, more welcoming entry that connects the front of the house with a newly added conservatory that overlooks the lush backyard. “We were channeling Dumbarton Oaks and classic Georgian orangeries,” says Cogar, pointing to the black-and-white marble flooring and series of arched metal doors across the back. “It’s a little bit more Regency-inspired and European.”

Involved from the beginning, interior designer Jackye Lanham incorporated an eclectic mix of furnishings that includes French, Chinese and English antiques, customdesigned upholstery and the husband’s growing collection of contemporary art. A subdued palette of neutrals “makes the antiques stand out and look more special,” says Lanham, noting that balancing proportions is also crucial. “[The furniture and antiques] feel as though they talk to each other, so your eye goes from one piece to another.” Furnished salon-style with distinct seating areas, the conservatory includes antiques and upholstered pieces covered in silk, mohair, velvet, linen and leather in calming neutral shades. “It’s luxurious but in a quiet way,” she says, pointing

to the textural integral plaster walls. “It’s like a painting. You add a little bit here and there with every stroke.” When color is used, its impact is undeniable. The wife’s blue-and-white 19th-century Chinese export porcelain, for example, pops against the neutral-print grasscloth wallcovering in the formal dining room, contributing to a heady milieu that includes hand-painted chinoiserie doors, 19thcentury gilt mirrors and classic antiques. And painted in a soft, icy blue, the walls in the primary bedroom create a serene backdrop for a four-poster bed flanked by chinoiserie chests. After spending the duration of the project in a rented house, the owners were thrilled to return to the beloved family home, which is functioning just as they had hoped it would. “This project made their home what they’ve always wanted it to be, and they love it,” says Lanham. “Working with the owners and design team and seeing the end result is extremely rewarding.” See Resources, Back of Book.

D DESPITE ITS LACKLUSTER interior finishes, a stately Federal-style manse in Tuxedo Park captured the heart of a young mother known for her fabulous soirees. Years later, after her children had their own families, she commissioned architect Charles Heydt of Pak Heydt & Associates and interior designer Elizabeth Lawrence, partner at Bunny Williams Interior Design, to reimagine it for a new era. “It was time to give her dream house a new lease on life with a higher level of finish and customization,” says Lawrence. To better showcase the hilltop home, landscape architect Richard Anderson eliminated a prominent mound that obscured the front porch when viewed from the street. Boxwoods and other simple plantings add color and soften the front facade. “The goal was for this house to look like it’s been here forever,” he explains.

Middle Ground
Resembling dragged plaster, a textural wallcovering from Schumacher fosters a cozy milieu in a second-floor family room furnished with a plush tufted sectional sofa and accent tables from Bunny Williams Home.
Flanking the swimming pool, a newly created pool house and complementary cabana in the home’s original style enhances the effect. “They balance the overall facade,” says Heydt. The interior transformation is equally wellconsidered. For example, the walls are covered in shimmery Venetian plaster applied by skilled artisans in a weeks-long process. The same care went into the hand-stenciled patterns on the hardwood flooring in the grand foyer. Clad in reflective gold leaf, a groin vault ceiling likewise elevates a passageway that also serves as a luxe bar. “In many respects it’s a new house within the envelope of an old home,” says Heydt. “This kind of project requires a special client who is passionate about the details.” The project’s extended timeline also gave Lawrence time to hunt for the sort of rarified objects a house of this caliber merited, combing through antiques shops and European flea markets. Displayed atop identical marble columns, a pair of white and blue terracotta vases acquired on one such excursion

perfectly accents the dining room’s apple green walls. “We don’t find things like that often and I knew they had to have an important place,” explains Lawrence. The designer also commissioned key pieces such as the handmade metal chandelier with a leafy motif in the breakfast area—a fitting companion to a Gracie wallcovering with hand-painted branches. And a team of craftsmen contributed to the intricate hand-carved four-poster bed in the primary bedroom. “She wanted a very

feminine space, and it’s kind of a princess bed,” says Lawrence, pointing to the embroidered headboard and tasseled valance. According to Lawrence, the result is a dream come true for the owner, who enjoys hosting both formal dinner parties and low-key visits with her grandchildren in a gracious and interesting home that’s finally perfect for both. “This house is formal but comfortable; grand but not overwhelming,” says Lawrence. “Exactly what she wanted.” See Resources, Back of Book.

WHEN INTERIOR DESIGNER Emily Wyatt met her clients in 2017, she knew this wouldn’t be an ordinary project. They had purchased a 1940s Georgian home that had been virtually untouched since its construction, leaving it ripe for renovation. And best of all? “This couple was ready to tackle a big overhaul,” says Wyatt. “I was impressed by the potential they saw in the house and, more so, their enthusiasm,” she adds. “Most would have been overwhelmed bringing this property up-to-date, but these clients were ready to roll up their sleeves and dive in.” Another thing the couple brought in abundance was patience. There were no quick fixes when it came to architect Kate Mabry finessing the layout to better equip the home for both family life and entertaining.

Her plans called for a multitude of modifications, including an expansion off the back of the house for a new kitchen and family room and staircases being moved and reformatted for better flow. With each change though, Mabry remained cognizant of the home’s history, based both on her design principles and at the behest of the homeowners. “Collectively, we wanted to respect the home’s Georgian character but find a way to breathe new life into it,” says Mabry. “The goal was to preserve the idea of rooms and individual spaces, maintaining that sense of transition from one scale of space to another scale of space.”

Similarly, landscape architect Jonathan Bussell transformed the front yard to better align with the home’s Georgian facade. While he addressed an ill-suited driveway “not so affectionately referred to as ‘the donut,’ given its lack of proper vehicle circulation and guest parking,” Bussell also removed the property’s overgrown boxwoods to make way for a new bluestone walkway and fresh plantings that work to highlight the home’s symmetry. Back inside, striking a balance—specifically the couple’s taste for antiques and classic English style with the reality of having 84
two small children—was top of mind for Wyatt, and she gleaned inspiration from designer Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, one of England’s foremost authorities on blending traditional style into contemporary settings. With a blue-and-white color scheme as her baseline, Wyatt selected a bevy of indoor-outdoor fabrics that could withstand small children zipping through during pool parties, and also stand up to the traffic of guests the couple regularly hosts for corporate gatherings. “It was all about creating a classic and special backdrop, but remaining fresh and user-friendly,” says Wyatt.

Like the main home, the couple put their trust in the design team to spare no detail when planning the new pool house. “They were on board with everything we had to offer,” says Mabry. “They understood that the smallest of details can make a space feel right.” Notably, she worked with Bussell to seamlessly flow the pool deck’s brick hardscape onto the first floor, blurring the distinction between outdoors and in. “The idea was for it to feel like a charming cabana when it’s all open,” she adds, “and then you can close the doors and actually live in it.” After three and half years, the home—with a new dose of youth, improved layout and plentiful Georgian character— was finally ready for its second act. “Working with clients who value design is always a treat,” says Wyatt. “But when you have their unwavering trust too, it’s the recipe for a really spectacular home.” See Resources, Back of Book.
