WHAT STUCK OUT TO me most when I first moved to Atlanta was the overwhelming scent of blooming florals. It captivated me, as though the intensely pleasing aroma that permeated car doors, office walls and everything in between was some freak of nature that my Midwestern upbringing hadn’t afforded me. Wherever I ventured, I would breathe in as deeply as my lungs would allow. My attitude during those months mirrored the main character of a romance novel, and it was Atlanta—with its flowering dogwoods and budding azaleas—that I was falling madly in love with. It certainly didn’t take me long to realize there is little that rivals springtime in our city. Our March issue celebrates the season’s cheerful reawakening with spaces inspired by nature’s bounty. SPRING SELLING SEASON Iconic estates, properties with abundant outdoor entertaining space and plush penthouses make for an exciting real estate market after the luxury sector’s strong rebound last year. Sales of homes more than $1 million represented the greatest percentage growth, according to HARRY NORMAN REALTORS, and prices were up 8%, based on ANSLEY REAL ESTATE data from November 2020 to November 2021. Founder and CEO BONNEAU ANSLEY III sees a strong new build market in Buckhead with properties selling for up to $10 million. “People are comfortable spending more money in the ultraluxury space,” he says.
For example, an $11.99 million penthouse in the Waldorf Astoria Residences, a $9.87 million Lewis Crook property in Tuxedo Park and the $9.49 million, 21,000-square-foot Sterling Hall are among the most expensive listings. The average metro area sold price was 18.4% higher in 2021 than 2020, the number of homes sold is up 3.9% and number of homes for sale is down 29.5%, according to Harry Norman Realtors. Buyer demand remains high, says JENNI BONURA, president and CEO. “Inventory shortages and potential interest rate increases will have an impact, and we anticipate that while positive, the growth rate will stabilize to a lower level than in 2021.”
THE GREAT OUTDOORS Just as listings emphasize a property’s outdoor oasis, the pandemic’s effect is such that landscape architects continue to see an influx of interest in pools, grilling and dining areas, and more requests for putting greens and artificial turf. Pool requests are combined with a pool house or cabana. “People want to be able to have friends and family over and have the full entertainment package right in their backyard,” says MIKE PARMELEE, landscape designer and owner/principal of JOE A. GAYLE & ASSOCIATES. Indeed, the emphasis is on a cleanlined, low-maintenance landscape, says LUCINDA BRAY, landscape architect and owner of FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN. “Less is more these days: a few well-thought-out and intentional pieces versus the landscapes of the past, which have been overly planted, lush and maintenance-heavy,” she says. 16

Naomi Von Habersham WITH SPRING RIGHT AROUND the corner, I’m chomping at the bit to dine al fresco or stroll through a garden, especially now that spring flowers are beginning to bloom. For me, the first glimpses of tulips, jonquils and hyacinth emerging from the ground are like an invitation to spend the day outside soaking up the sunshine. Of course, the weather at this time of year can be iffy, and if you lived in Atlanta during the early 1990s, you know just how iffy it can be. (I’m referring to the blizzard of 1993, better known as the “Storm of the Century.” Trust me when I say that it was a nightmare.) But if the recent past is any indication, March has enough 60-degree days that it is possible to spend some quality time outdoors, and what better way to do so than by enjoying a good old-fashioned picnic? Do people have proper picnics anymore? By proper, I mean one that involves a blanket and a picnic basket, preferably a wicker one outfitted with plates, cloth napkins and cutlery. I like the idea of a Sunday afternoon picnic in a semi-secluded spot, away from throngs of people, because a picnic isn’t so relaxing when there is little in the way of privacy. I don’t recommend bringing along a Bluetooth speaker, either, because isn’t the whole point of a picnic to enjoy the sights and sounds of the great outdoors? What I do recommend is a menu of food that is not only scrumptious but easy to eat. Cold fried chicken is always a good choice, especially since it doesn’t require the use of cutlery. That’s not to say you have to serve finger food only. Pasta and fruit salads are also good options, and they only require the use of a fork. Bring along a bottle of chilled white wine and perhaps slices of pound cake for dessert, and you’ve really got a feast fit for picnicking. I don’t know about you, but just the thought of such a repast is making me hungry for spring!

TRE VELE, THE LATEST BRAINCHILD of the team behind Buckhead’s Mission + Market, made its mouthwatering debut to the metro area late last year. “The Sandy Springs dining scene has been evolving,” says co-owner Jonathan Akly, who operates the restaurant with his brother, Ryan Akly, and chef Ian Winslade. “Our inspiration was to bring an upscale, unpretentious Italian restaurant to our local neighborhood.” Situated at the City Walk Sandy Springs, Tre Vele specializes in homemade pasta and signature Italian dishes under the expertise of executive chef Giancarlo Ruiz. Ruiz lived in Florence, Italy, for 16 years where he received elite culinary training in the native cuisine. “Many of the techniques and recipes used at Tre Vele are a direct reflection of my experience and education in Florence,” says Ruiz. “Our food is labor-intensive and we don’t cut any corners, but it’s worth the effort to share my love for Italian cuisine with our guests.” Tony Akly of Restaurants Consulting Group, Inc., a full-service design-build firm, is responsible for the architectural and interior design of Tre Vele. Inside the space, vibrant greens and an exposed brick wall complement a 30-foot Carrara marble bar that acts as a resting place for the restaurant’s array of crafted cocktails. Just up the stairs off of the dining room, a wraparound rooftop terrace is the perfect destination to cozy up by a firepit with an Aperol Spritz, especially on a chilly spring evening. If you’re looking to replicate your favorite dish at home, the Tre Vele Market + Cafe, inspired by the quaint bodegas all throughout Italy, offers fresh pasta, sauces and salads to go. In addition to the takeout fare, the Tre Vele retail market features a full coffee bar, fresh pastries made daily and a curated selection of Italian wines. ABOUT THE KITCHEN ON TOUR When approaching this kitchen, the homeowner, who is enthusiastic about cooking, had put forth the challenge to design a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. By blending both stained and painted cabinetry, we were able to gain symmetry in an otherwise difficult space. The white oak cabinets add a warmth to the room that balances with plaster details throughout. Additionally, with the fine details of mortised olive hinges, unlacquered brass hardware and solid planked doors, it calls back to a time of a mastery between design and the artistry of woodworking.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN ON TOUR This classic bungalow was charming no doubt, but its kitchen fell short on function. With a peninsula acting as the divide between the kitchen and the living room and a refrigerator too close to a wall for one door to open fully, the space needed to be reconfigured for a more fluid flow. We traded out the peninsula in favor of a center island and took over some closet space in a back hallway to open things up. Dark accents in the island color, lighting and hardware pop against the classic white cabinetry and painted hardwood floors. New appliances were selected to integrate more seamlessly with the cabinetry and a breakfast bar was designed for the microwave and coffee maker.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN ON TOUR Our client’s original kitchen was situated in a disjointed L-shaped floor plan. As serious home cooks, they needed something with efficient traffic and task-specific storage. We renegotiated walls, adjacent spaces and even their basement entry to create an entirely new, chef-friendly space that was highly customized to their needs. The new layout allowed for ample storage and thoughtfully placed appliances with workflow in mind. A dramatic Tahiti Quartzite hood covers a 48” Wolf range, setting a focal point for the large island, convenient for prepping and staging beautiful meals. The coffee and tea station caps one end of the space, while a baking station, a tall SZ, and a tall pantry cabinet flanks the other. A custom stain on rift white oak cabinetry creates a dramatic finish against Tahiti Quartzite on the island and range wall, while a more neutral countertop softens the adjacent walls.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN ON TOUR When homeowner Susie found this home, it had been occupied by its original owner since the late ‘70s and never remodeled. However, it was well maintained and that made it the perfect renovation candidate. The design team of client, Houston interior designers Tokerud and Co. and Atlanta kitchen and bath designer Matthew Rao of RAO Design Studio, completely revamped the spaces. The dark corridor kitchen became a media room, and the kitchen moved into the light and anchors a prominent, convenient space in the vaulted great room. One period detail the design team kept was the oak parquet floor, which was stripped and lightened to make the foundation for the kitchen, furniture and art above it.

ABOUT THE KITCHEN ON TOUR The modern kitchen in this extensively remodeled home balances with the open concept of this new family room that is flooded by an abundance of natural light. We worked closely with the homeowners and Steve Edison Homes to expand the layout of the kitchen area and create a space that functions equally well for both day-to-day living and entertaining guests. The kitchen is highlighted by a marble cooking alcove that elegantly conceals the ventilation and is flanked by an abundance of storage and integrated appliances. The large island with unique waterfall ends is accompanied by separate coffee and wine bars, which all come together to provide the perfect settings from morning to evening.

The Leicht kitchen is the perfect balance of functionality, clean lines and an overall less-is-more approach. Hidden pocket doors in a light Nordic pine finish conceal the countertop appliances and a niche door leading into the client’s office and horticulture grow room. The carbon grey ultra-matte island has drawers on both sides, offering the duo the ability to cook simultaneously across from each other without obstacles in the walkways.

Growing up on a Napa Valley vineyard meant Paula was always at the table with family and friends. Her father loved bringing home guests for impromptu dinner parties, and her mother, Marilouise, loved cooking simple, beautiful food and trading stories as the wine flowed. Paula is a consultant and community leader with more than 30 years of experience in the wine industry. As principal of Kornell Wine Company, she has consulted with esteemed wine brands and appellations throughout Napa and Sonoma Counties. Deeply connected to philanthropy, Paula has been involved with the High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction since its inception in 1993 and has participated every year in various capacities. Atlanta has felt like a second home to Paula ever since meeting two generations of the Denny family. Additionally, she chaired the 1992 Napa Valley Wine Auction, now known as Auction Napa Valley, and served as a co-chair in 2005 and again 2019. Paula was 2009 President of the board of directors for the Napa Valley Vintners, filling a position her father held 45 years earlier. Paula creates camaraderie through hospitality. It’s in her genes. Her home is open and easy going, with cut flowers from the garden, homemade jam in the pantry, and rescue dogs and chickens all around. Each glass she pours for her guests celebrates the everyday beauty and bounty of Napa Valley.

AWARD-WINNING EXECUTIVE CHEF AND CO-FOUNDER OF THE GREY Mashama Bailey is the award-winning executive chef and co-founder of the critically acclaimed The Grey, set in a former Greyhound bus terminal in Savannah, Georgia. Since opening in December 2014, The Grey has earned numerous accolades, including being named a Food & Wine Restaurant of The Year, one of TIME Magazine’s “The World’s Greatest Places” and a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation’s Best New Restaurant award, thanks in large part to Mashama’s flavorful dishes that highlight regional ingredients. In 2018, Mashama and Johno opened The Grey Market, combining their love for New York City bodegas - the true lifeblood of any New Yorker – with the history and convenience of the Southern lunch counter. With the premiere of Netflix’s Chef’s Table Season 6, Mashama became the first African American chef to star on the show. Masahma is the chairwoman of the Edna Lewis Foundation, whose mission is to honor and extend the legacy of Edna Lewis by creating opportunities for African Americans in the fields of cooking, agriculture, food studies, and storytelling.

In January 2021, Mashama and Johno debuted their first co-written culinary memoir, Black, White and The Grey, which tells the story of their distinct partnership and how the two – a Black female chef and a White male entrepreneur – came together to build a restaurant attempting to reshape cultural conversation beyond food. HIGH MUSEUM OF ART HIGHLIGHTS KAWS PRINTS Through March 27, 2022 Since his groundbreaking exhibition at the High in 2012, KAWS has taken the world by storm with monumental sculptural installations and major exhibitions across the United States, Asia, and Europe. His work is known by millions worldwide because, from the outset of his career, he has embraced the democratic principle of making his work as accessible as possible in the tradition of American pop art through editions of multiples, toys, and prints. KAWS PRINTS features all of KAWS’s editioned prints in the High’s collection as well as single-image editions, bringing the pop art tradition of silkscreen printing – from Warhol, Lichtenstein, and Haring to KAWS – full circle.
ANDRÉ KERTÉSZ: POSTCARDS FROM PARIS February 18 – May 29, 2022 In 1925, photographer André Kertész (American, born Hungary, 1894 – 1985) arrived in Paris with little more than a camera and meager savings. Over the next three years, the young artist carved out a photographic practice that allowed him to move among the realms of amateur and professional, photojournalist and avant-garde artist, diarist and documentarian. Organized by the Art Institute of Chicago, Postcards from Paris is the first exhibition to bring together Kertész’s rare carte postale (postcard paper) prints. These now-iconic works offer new insight into his early, experimental years and reveal the importance of Paris as a vibrant meeting ground for international artists, who drew inspiration from each other to create new, modern ways of seeing and representing the world.
WHAT IS LEFT UNSPOKEN, LOVE March 25 – August 14, 2022 Is love intrinsic, or is it a habit? What is the difference between love and friendship? What is the relationship of love and truth, freedom, and justice? These are just some of the questions to be explored in this exhibition featuring contemporary artworks created from 1987 – 2021 that address the different ways the most important thing in life – love – is expressed. Organized during a time of social and political discord, when cynicism often seems to triumph over hope, this exhibition will examine love as a profound subject of critical commentary from time immemorial yet with a persistently elusive definition. LOCATED ON A PROMINENT BLOCK in Buckhead, a newly constructed English Manor-style home’s effortless blend of formal and informal elements captured the hearts of an easygoing couple with young children. For example, while the painted brick and stone house features a traditional layout, the moldings are minimalist and the great room is defined with rustic wooden ceiling beams. “It’s a cleaner aesthetic and not too fussy,” says architect Tim Adams of T.S. Adams Studio, Architects. “In this case, less is more.” Although the arched front door was originally intended to face the side street, Adams realized that turning it toward the main thoroughfare would allow him to create a rear family room flooded with light on two sides, one

that opens to a patio and swimming pool nestled into a natural slope on the lot. “Once you understand the topography, the solution reveals itself,” he explains. In addition, it allowed him to align the great room fireplace with the front door, creating a pleasing line of sight that draws visitors into the space. Inspired by the architecture, designer Lauren DeLoach incorporated a spirited mix of lighting, new furnishings and antiques rendered in a predominantly blue,
green and white color palette. A repetition of key patterns enhances the flow. For instance, the wing chair next to the great room fireplace is covered in the same checked fabric as the barstool seat-backs in the open kitchen. And a complementary fabric with a larger check print lines the draperies, which have a scalloped edge. “That thread of continuity makes the space feel more connected,” she says. The cohesive palette also defines the primary suite, where white side tables flank

And the floral wallcovering in the mudroom likewise coordinates with the cafe curtain and vanity skirting in the adjacent pool bath, where brass sconces with pleated green shades flank an antique gilded mirror. A printed linen wallcovering with a lively floral pattern makes a bolder statement in the formal dining room. “I just love
the way it hugs the curves,” says DeLoach, pointing to the coved ceiling. The study across the hall is equally dramatic, its walls, moldings and ceiling painted in a deep leafy green hue that creates a warm backdrop for a striped sofa and a wing chair covered in a floral fabric. “It’s handsome and super warm,” says DeLoach. “The house flows together, but each room still has its own personality. F FOR A NEW HOME to endure, live well and improve over time, every consideration must be in sync from the very beginning. For this shinglestyle home, that meant starting with the location. Rising above the Chattahoochee River Valley, the site looks out to distant views of the Appalachian Mountains. “I wanted to create a light, open space that was connected to the exterior and really blur the lines between inside and out,” says architect Tim Adams of T.S. Adams Studio, Architects. Working within the intrinsic language of the shingle style, Adams designed an open-concept floor plan separated by arched openings and filled with floor-to-ceiling windows. Other architectural detailing, such as the stair hall’s paneled wall, elevate the home’s Southern graciousness. “I love stairs

Set the Scene

Simplistic Elegance
The homeowners asked Adams and Millner for a casual dining area in lieu of a formal space. To maintain the easy attitude, Adams designed the room as an extension of the kitchen and a pass-through to the screened porch. Fixed transoms allow an abundance of light to filter in from the screened porch.
and always see them as an opportunity for something special and sculptural,” says Adams. “The paneled wall is a detail that is in keeping with the style of the home while also adding texture.” Capitalizing on the natural light, designers Melanie Millner and Katie Moorhouse of The Design Atelier selected a light color palette underscored with darker accents to generate depth and interest. “It’s light and bright, yet warm,” says Millner. Walls and trim are painted Benjamin Moore’s White Dove, the perfect foil to the home’s black iron fixtures, dramatic artwork and Kawai grand piano in the stair hall. Furnishings and accessories are both new and from the client’s previous house. Taking inventory of her clients’ existing pieces, Millner created a furniture plan with items that would easily translate to the style and scale of the rooms, filling in with new purchases as necessary. For the dining room, Millner kept the table and sideboard, but she recovered the formerly red wing chairs in a Kerry Joyce linen blend, its celadon hues reflecting the misty mountains 89

In the great room, darker green tones ground a pair of armchairs in the bay window, bringing in the color of the area’s fir trees. “The greens were a good way to introduce just a little bit of color,” says Millner. The updated look is equally evident in the kitchen finishes, where the designer opted for neutral tones with pops of warm white oak, Perla Venata quartzite countertops and backsplash from Walker Zanger. Millner repeated those choices in the adjacent bar, but added an antiqued mirrored backsplash for a dash of glamour. “It reflects the light, and is the perfect backdrop for the homeowner’s extensive Waterford collection,” says Millner. The owners quickly found themselves at home in their new surroundings thanks to the classic architecture and carefully chosen appointments. “Their former home was very traditional,” says Millner. “Tim, Katie and I infused this house with a fresh spirit, but it was important to incorporate some of the furnishings, art and family photos they had collected over the years. We wanted the home to feel new, yet familiar.” See Resources, Back of Book.

WHEN LOOKING FOR A FOREVER home for their family of six, an Atlanta couple knew they’d hit the mark with a spacious English Regency-style manse situated in Atlanta’s Tuxedo Park neighborhood. Brimming with charm, the home—originally designed by Harrison Design in 2000—features spacious rooms and soaring ceilings, as well as custom molding and formal fireplaces throughout. To infuse the home with their family’s laid-back personality, the homeowners enlisted the expertise of Atlanta designer Cathy Rhodes, who strategically outfitted the home with happy hues, easygoing textures and custom upholstery—all while creating intentional gathering spaces so that every square inch of the home was livable.

Gather ‘Round
In the breakfast area, custom Galbraith & Paul window treatments echo the blue of the kitchen cabinetry. The dining table is through Hickory Chair and the patterned dining chairs are upholstered in a Katie Leede fabric.
“With four children and everybody seeking their own little reading nook or homework space, we took advantage of the large rooms and created a variety of cozy seating areas,” says Rhodes. “We were on the same page of taking the formal rooms and making each one of them a livable, welcoming space for their family to enjoy on an everyday basis.” In the living room, for instance, Rhodes broke up the sprawling space into two distinct seating areas, purposefully placing an open-back chaise lounge in the center so that “you can sit facing either way and be part of either seating area or conversation group.” In both the living and dining rooms, the designer balanced formal architectural elements with more casual sisal rugs and upholstery “to make them cozy, inviting and less formal than you might expect when you walk in the house.” Likewise, in lieu of artwork, the design team replaced the dining room’s existing wall paneling with a custom, tone-on-tone d’Arte silk wallpaper, which serves as a subtle backdrop for a custom Keith Fritz dining table and green velvet dining chairs.

Restful Setting
A seating area in the primary bedroom provides the perfect place for the couple to retreat in the evenings. To avoid obscuring the view of the backyard, they installed a rotating television in the ceiling that can be viewed from various angles in the space.
“You’re enveloped in a beautiful scene, but nothing jumps out as too loud or too busy,” says Rhodes. “We wanted it to be all about the dining table and the people sitting around it.” Though the dining room’s palette is subdued, the clients love color, which Rhodes honored by anchoring the home with shades of green and blue—with the occasional pop of orange or coral. This is particularly evident in the kitchen, which Rhodes renovated with the help of contractor Stuart Grubb of SGP Construction. To make
the room’s large footprint and 12-foot-tall ceilings feel elegant yet approachable, Rhodes chose a rich peacock blue (Sherwin-Williams’ Still Water) for the cabinetry. In the adjoining breakfast nook, a custom Galbraith & Paul drapery fabric echoes this color scheme. “That consistent use of color helps tie the house together and makes it a bit less formal,” says Rhodes. “You feel like you could pull up a chair from any room into another room and they would all work together.” See Resources, Back of Book. 109
