ONCE AGAIN, THE ATLANTA SKYLINE is rapidly changing. Whether it’s luxury apartments being built to accommodate an influx of young professionals or new developments devoted to superior senior living—or even the slew of relocations for business- or pandemicrelated life changes, our fair city is experiencing growth at record levels. Our May issue is devoted to chic, cosmopolitan style, and, while a wave of optimism permeates the air, we’re also quite literally looking “up” to the four mid- and high-rise projects featured in this issue. Courtney Giles Decker brings AH&L inside Buckhead’s The Charles, and we also take a deep dive into a few beloved residences at the iconic Plaza Towers at the hands of husband-and-wife design duo Phoebe and Jim Howard; Carolyn Malone and William Litchfield; and Mark Williams Design Associates.

FROM GEORGIA TO THE WORLD, Susan and Katharine Hable collectively impart their indelible design sensibility and infectious spirit from their home base in Athens. Their business, Hable Construction, is named after their great-grandfather’s road construction business in Corsicana, Texas. Here, Susan serves as the creator and artist, while Katharine oversees sales and operations, although the two share complementary skills that extend beyond their respective roles. That simpatico relationship has led the sisters into myriad ventures (and adventures) over the past two decades, beginning with textiles 22 years ago and shops in New York City’s Soho neighborhood followed by one on Perry Street in the West Village. “Coming up in the South, and living those years in New York, that’s where we found our voice,” says Susan, who has called Athens home for the past 11 years. Katharine was lured there three years ago, both by familial ties and the supportive and collaborative creative community that distinguishes the university town. There’s always a willingness to connect and assist. “Can I help you do this? Who can do this?” are often the questions, says Katharine of the camaraderie and networking. Plus, there is the joy of having plenty of working space, which was in short supply in New York City.

“I have the luxury of having my studio at the back of my yard,” adds Susan. “It’s literally my haven, and I can explore so many things.” From that perch, the Hables have continued to put their creative stamp on a dazzling array of home furnishing categories with some of the industry’s most respected companies. “We don’t like to date,” says Katharine of their partnerships with their long-time collaborators. “We like to get married to our partners.” Case in point: They’ve been working with Garnet Hill for almost two decades. Other partners over the years span furniture to fashion and include Hickory Chair, Anthropologie, Alabama Chanin and Soicher Marin to name just a few. There are also designs for rugs, and later this year, a new lighting collection with Generation Lighting. Textiles, all of which are made in the United States, remain a cornerstone of their practice. Susan’s latest artwork, including sculpture and painting, is on view in a group exhibition of Georgia artists titled WELLSPRING at Spalding Nix Fine Art in Atlanta through May 14. Prolific as they are, the Hables’ designs are recognized for their soulful, authentic and organic sensibilities. As Susan notes, “As much as we say, ‘Let’s make more things,’ we are considerate about what we put into the world.” hableconstruction.com

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: You have a large family. How did you incorporate six generations into this Mother’s Day luncheon? NANCY IZLAR: My family has always entertained and used family heirlooms in the process, and I’ve passed those joys on to my daughter, Darby. The silver epergne was my great-grandmother’s while the etched wine glasses, silver tray and flatware are from my grandmother and mother. The Herend china was my mother-in-law’s and the mother-of-pearl flatware was a gift from my father’s wife. Our guest of honor, and our sixth generation, is my new grandson Rivers! AH&L: This gazebo setting is

charming and memorable. What are other entertaining tricks that captivate your guests? NI: Whether entertaining formally or casually, I always use fresh flowers, colored glasses, candles, festive cocktail napkins and a signature drink. AH&L: Tell us about your mother’s smart recommendation regarding your silver pattern. NI: On my 18th birthday, my grandmother took me to pick out my silver pattern, and my mother recommended that I select the same one that she and my grandmother had. Now I have three generations of silver to use when I have large gatherings. AH&L: Darby, you’re in your 19

ties, and it is refreshing to see your interest in entertaining with for silver, china and crystal. Do you think formality will return for your generation? DARBY FALLON CLARK: My mother constantly entertained, so it’s always been a part of our lives and we learned to appreciate fine china, crystal and silver. I selected beautiful china for my registry, but it’s not overly formal and it pairs well with my mother’s patterns. AH&L: The menus and place cards coordinate perfectly with the tablecloth. Was this custom or serendipity? NI: After selecting the tablecloth fabric, Darby and I worked with Blythe Holliday Designs to create them. AH&L: How did you imagine this setting and who created all of the beautiful floral work? NI: Nancy Izlar Interiors hired

Katherine White last summer due to her background in floral work. Katherine owns Gather Wild, a floral and event company, and she and I discussed the look I wanted and we selected the flowers. She did a stunning job creating my vision. AH&L: Nancy, what’s it like to celebrate this Mother’s Day with your daughter and new grandson? Darby, how does it feel to be a new mom celebrating with your mother? NI: Being a grandmother has brought a whole new dimension of love and joy to my life. I’m so proud of Darby and so overjoyed with Rivers, so it’s going to be extra special this year. DFC: Mother’s Day has an entirely new meaning for me, and I now have a greater appreciation for my mother and respect for all mothers.

DELVING INTO DESIGN

A circuitous adventure led CHELSEA BARRY to the exact place she wants to call home: Atlanta Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON Photographed by MARC MAULDIN

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: Your path to design has been a journey across many endeavors and cities. Tell us a bit about that. CHELSEA BARRY: I was born in New York and raised in Tampa, Florida, by a Cuban father and Puerto Rican mother, so my brothers and I are first-generation Americans. My parents owned a restaurant and I worked every position in the restaurant. That experience helped me learn the value of hard work, honesty and integrity. AH&L: You didn’t pursue design in college; rather, you took a shortcut into the business world in Miami. What was that like? CB: I got a job with the largest event promoter in South Florida. The job was fast-paced and I juggled a lot of responsibilities, but it’s where I learned about project management, budgeting and scheduling. AH&L: At what point did home and design become your interest? CB: I moved to New York where I worked for Paramount Antiques in their 100,000-square-foot warehouse. I sold antique reproductions to homeowners and hotels. By working in all facets, I learned how to furnish homes and place orders.

AH&L: How did you land here in Atlanta? CB: I was 25 and Atlanta is a great city for a Latina woman. I landed an incredible job with Ruth’s Chris Steak House running their sales department, and within a year, I had the highest sales worldwide with more than 140 restaurants. AH&L: What an accomplishment! What caused you to open Casa De CB? CB: I met my husband and found my passion renovating residential properties. I truly love problemsolving and project management, and my approach is practical and sensible so clients don’t feel like they have to spend a ton of money. Now both my business and my personal life have expanded: We’re having our third child and I have a thriving business! AH&L: What’s on the horizon? CB: As a bilingual Latina woman and having residential and commercial sales and design experience, I’m ready to take the next step. My goal is to get my general contractor’s license while exploring restaurant design. I truly feel like I can do it all: design, project management and construction, and I’m looking forward to doing this in Atlanta.

FULL-SERVICE FLAIR Written and Produced by JENNIFER BRADLEY FRANKLIN

WHEN THE LUXURIOUS CORSO ATLANTA makes its debut this summer, it will represent a new breed of senior living. Inspired by Parisian classical architecture, the gated property boasts 500,000 square feet of residential and common space, complete with manicured courtyards and winding paths. The development is drawing residents from Atlanta and beyond. “It [lets people] live in the community they’ve always lived in, but the services will come from behind the scenes,” says Tim Gary, CEO of Galerie Living, Corso’s parent company. THE INTERLOCK is primed to be the Westside’s newest mixed-use development, at the corner of Howell Mill and 14th Street. “Our project really makes the community more of a community. It makes it more livable and walkable,” says Jeff Garrison, partner with developer S.J. Collins Enterprises. The 9-acre community will feature the Bellyard, a 161-room boutique hotel; Plateau West, 41 townhomes by Monte Hewett Homes; Solis’ 349 luxury apartments; as well as high-tech offices that will be home to WeWork, an incubator by Georgia Technology Ventures and more. Retail, entertainment and culinary offerings will be a draw. Slater Hospitality will open a venue this summer with a 12,000-square-foot restaurant, infinity-edge pool and outdoor firepits on the 1-acre rooftop. Planned spirits outposts DrawBar, Pour Taproom and Holiday Bar will capitalize on the open-container license to allow guests to imbibe while walking around. “It’s an incredible place,” says Garrison. “It’s all about creating that energy to complete the West Midtown market and make it a place where people never want to leave.” theinterlockatl.com

Naomi Von Habersham ONCE UPON A TIME, the type of home which most people aspired to was a single-family house situated on a plot of land that was sizable enough for either a front or backyard or, better yet, both. Even today, with a variety of residential options available, owning a single-family house remains highly desirable. Houses tend to be decent investments, and with the kind of privacy a house affords, one can for the most part do what one wants whenever one wants to. But for some of us, caring for a house and tending to its landscaping is too much of a burden. Instead, our ideal situation is high-rise living, which has so many benefits that I don’t even know where to begin. First off, vertical living means no longer having to worry about watering one’s lawn or pruning trees and shrubbery. What a relief! Then there are the conveniences that make high-rise living so attractive. In many buildings, newspapers are left outside one’s door, packages are received by building staff and trash disposal is as easy as throwing a garbage bag down a chute. But the real beauty of living in a high-rise lies in its aesthetic flexibility: When decorating your home, you’re not as beholden to the exterior’s architectural style as you are with a house, which means you can decorate your home any way you wish. Consider those sleek, glassy buildings that are cropping up all over Atlanta. If you’re a resident of one and a modernist at heart, then your preferred streamlined furnishings will serve to highlight, even maximize, the building’s contemporary style. But if you’re a Francophile traditionalist, your high-rise home can be equally as stunning, especially if you play your gilt antiques and silk fabrics off of your apartment’s sleek surroundings, a yin and yang combination that can be drop-dead chic. Come to think of it, that’s what makes high-rise living so interesting. Not only do you encounter a diverse mix of people and lifestyles, you’ll often find a mix of decorating styles too.

COMMUNITY FOCUS

Southern flair—and the finest local ingredients—are celebrated in Atlanta’s newest grab-and-go marketplace THE BUTTERY ATL Written by LAUREN IVERSON

clockwise from top Southern-made goods such as Holeman and Finch Bloody Mary mix, Hop’s Kitchen chicken breader and specialty kitchenware line the shelves of The Buttery ATL. The brick-and-mortar location was originally the office space of Hopkins and Company’s commissary kitchen before being remodeled into The Buttery ATL’s storefront. Pastries by Executive Pastry Chef Jen Yee are baked fresh daily.

NESTLED IN A LITTLE pocket between Piedmont Road and Cheshire Bridge Road, The Buttery ATL is a quaint shop that packs a mighty punch. It takes only seconds inside to realize the latest venture by restaurateurs Gina and Chef Linton Hopkins—the powerhouses behind staples such as Hop’s Chicken, Holeman and Finch and the Peachtree Road Farmers Market—is certainly not your average grab-and-go marketplace. Before opening their first brick-and-mortar location in November 2020, the pandemic-born idea made its name as an online marketplace providing an alternative way to purchase local specialty items. “I couldn’t find a [margarita] mix I liked, and during the past year, I really wanted—and needed—a good margarita,” says Chef Hopkins. “So I made a mix with 10 limes in every bottle and wanted to share it with others. The Buttery ATL evolved from there.” Inside, specialty cheeses and a tempting rack of dry-cured meats welcome guests, but the fresh-baked pastries by Executive Pastry Chef Jen Yee quickly steal the show. Bite into an almond croissant or pain au chocolat and allow time to slow while you enjoy the flaky, buttery perfection of her mastery. In the adjoining room, shelves are filled with restaurant-quality ingredients, from specialty olive oils, seasonings and flours to packaged items from the Hopkins and Company restaurant umbrella, including condiments from Holeman and Finch, chicken breader from Hop’s Kitchen and even Eugene and Elizabeth’s simple syrup. The common theme that runs throughout

is nearly everything in the marketplace is Southern-made—an important philosophy for Chef Hopkins, who lives by the saying put your state on your plate. “Buying local is something I wake up and think about first,” he says. If you want to leave the prep to someone else, the hot-dish dinners for two are unmatched. Taste the freshness of the spring season in the Celebration of Southern Vegetables plate, or indulge in the decadence of the Lovely Layer Lasagna, a 100-layer dish that features 33 layers of meat, cheese and Bolognese with the 100th layer being the marinara sauce. As for what’s on the horizon for The Buttery ATL, there is no slowing down, according to Gina Hopkins. Atlantans can expect always-evolving market offerings and menu items, as well as an outdoor option that will serve breakfast sandwiches, lunch specials and other made-to-order items throughout the day. “We hope to give our guests a sweet place where they can explore new items, but also have the comfort of their favorites.” butteryatl.com

WALK-UP WINDOWS

“Buying local is something I wake up and think about first.” —Chef Linton Hopkins

clockwise from top The Celebration of Southern Vegetables plate, available for Monday night pick-up, is a healthy, colorful dinner for two. The almond croissant is equal parts eye-catching and delicious. A rack of dry-cured meats accompanies a fridge full of specialty cheeses in the front entrance, offering endless pairings for at-home charcuterie.

Get all of your Tex-Mex favorites at Piedmont Heights’ newest walk-up window and takeout restaurant THE QUESO SHOP, brought to you by the team behind Yumbii and The Queso Truck. With items like carne asada tacos, Mexican rotisserie chicken family-meal option, on-the-go margaritas and even a secret menu with a specialty “surfer’s burrito,” there’s something for everyone to enjoy. thequesotruck.com

Grab your sunglasses and sandals and head to Old Fourth Ward’s LOTTA FRUTTA, a woman-owned Mexican juice and smoothie bar that brings the flavors of Latin America to the streets of Atlanta. If the charming, colorful windowfront isn’t enough to put you in vacation mode, the freshness from Mexican-style fruit cups, South American-style smoothies, Cubaninspired sandwiches and more surely will. lottafrutta.com Whiskey Bird introduced the Morningside neighborhood to its younger sister last summer— LITTLE BIRD—who’s quite literally attached at the hip. When the pandemic hit, this cross-cultural fusion restaurant introduced a now-permanent takeout walk-up window to continue to safely serve guests. With the option to order online for grab-and-go or sit down and relax for a serviced meal, there are truly no favorites in this sibling relationship. eatwhiskeybird.com

ABOUT OUR BENEFICIARY

THE ATLANTA COMMUNITY FOOD BANK works to end hunger with the food, people and big ideas needed to ensure our neighbors have the nourishment to lead healthy and productive lives. Far too many people in our own community experience hunger every day, including children, seniors and working families. Through more than 700 nonprofit partners, we help more than 864,000 people get healthy food every year. Our goal is that all hungry people across metro Atlanta and north Georgia will have access to the nutritious meals they need, when they need them. It takes the power of our whole community to make that possible. Join us at ACFB.org. 2

ABOUT THE DESIGNERS

ABOUT THE KITCHEN ON TOUR Our client, a true master gardener, originally wanted a classic white kitchen to replace her current white kitchen, but we asked her to expand her color palette and imagine how beautiful it would be to wake up each day to a gorgeous kitchen just like her stunning gardens. We suggested switching the two colors with Benjamin Moore’s White Dove on the walls and ceilings and Farrow and Ball Blue Gray on her luxury fitted custom cabinetry. Modernized but classic, clean lined yet relaxed. The result—we will let you decide for yourself.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER Joslynn Buchanan, senior designer at Keystone Millworks is one of the most talented kitchen designers in Atlanta and her stunning and detailed designs constantly draw the attention of architects, interior designers and a discerning clientele. For more than two decades, Keystone Millworks has brought together the finest materials, traditional artisanal craftsmanship and an approach that has been tailor made to your ideas to create the best in luxury interiors. We invite you to visit our website and instagram page as well as our kitchen in the Tour of Kitchens, where we look forward to showing you why we offer the finest custom cabinetry made in America today.

ABOUT THE DESIGNERS

ABOUT THE KITCHEN ON TOUR The previous kitchen had low ceilings, very little natural light and was disconnected from the other parts of the home. When the homeowners expressed interest in renovating to better accommodate entertaining their grown children’s families, architect Linda MacArthur came up with the idea to raise the ceiling and add a clerestory. This addition allowed the Studio Entourage team to fit the design within the existing footprint and create an elongated kitchen that is now bathed in natural light. The design team also worked with the homeowner to carefully connect the kitchen to the adjacent living spaces. The homeowners are also Francophiles who love braising dishes, so having a gas La Cornue range was important and became a centerpiece for design.

MORGAN

CREEK

For this year’s project we are pleased to showcase a collaboration between Brandon Ingram, Mallory Mathison Glenn, Morgan Creek and Revival Construction. The kitchen combines refined details throughout, giving the space a rich yet comfortable feel. The focal point of the room is centered around a cleanly designed plaster hood, flanked by doors with ornate fretwork panels. Rounding out the space is an island with panels inset into scrolled legs, integrated refrigerator and a hidden pantry. The kitchen balances sophistication and openness, creating a timeless space for everyday life.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER Ryan DeCesaro, owner and longtime designer at Morgan Creek Cabinet Company, is proud to continue the legacy of showcasing the luxury cabinets of Morgan Creek in this year’s Tour of Kitchens. For over 20 years, Ryan has brought his passion of creating furniture with an emphasis on fine details and finishes to design cabinets for some of the finest homes in the Atlanta area. During that time, he has collaborated with many of the area’s leading architects and designers, which many can be seen both in Atlanta and nationally, and also on this year’s tour. Ryan says, “It is my desire to have the cabinets I design seamlessly integrate with the architecture and design of the home, thereby creating a space that is not only comfortable to live but pleasing to the eye.”

ABOUT THE DESIGNERS

ABOUT THE KITCHEN ON TOUR A growing family was more than happy to bid farewell to their Georgian-style home’s former builder-grade kitchen in favor of a custom design with plenty of style and state-of-the-art appliances. The design team expanded the layout of this space, incorporating a large pantry, morning bar and dedicated refrigeration and cooking zones. A moody color palette is complimented with white marble and a custom designed hood made of pewter and brass. Walnut inserts and glass add additional design details and sophistication. This kitchen is the perfect balance of style and functionality.

ABOUT THE DESIGNERS With over 35 years combined industry experience, the design team brings a wealth of information to their clients. Recipients of numerous industry awards, both James and Lisa strive to incorporate design principals that enhance their clients’ lifestyle while creating timeless designs.

Keep it Classic

Designer Jim Howard’s classical sensibilities are on display through both the millwork and sofa he designed in the living room. To keep the space from reading overly traditional, Phoebe Howard selected a fine art photograph by Josef Hoflehner through Jackson Fine Art. The coffee table and side tables were purchased by the couple in France.

DESIGNERS PHOEBE AND JIM HOWARD’s journey at Plaza Towers could best be described as “full circle,” says the pair who renovated their first apartment at the iconic Buckhead landmark over a decade ago. They eventually went on to sell it, a decision they both came to regret. “We really missed that little apartment,” remembers Phoebe. “It was small and manageable and had such beautiful light.” Location also gave the residence high marks. Because while the Howards call Jacksonville Beach, Florida, home, the apartment served as their work base, providing an easy commute between their interiors shops in Atlanta, Jacksonville and Charlotte, as well as to design projects across the Southeast and beyond. 63

Powerful Prints

Rose & Hydrangea by Cowtan & Tout takes center stage in the family room. The classic print inspired designer Phoebe Howard to introduce another enduring pattern—leopard—underfoot. She recalls finding the portrait of the old man “on the floor out in a field in France on a cool day.”

So when the opportunity came to purchase another unit at Plaza Towers, the couple didn’t hesitate. The apartment had been virtually unchanged since the complex first welcomed residents in 1970, prompting the need for a down-to-the-studs renovation. The Howards approached the project just as they always do—divide and conquer—with Jim taking lead in space planning and the interior architecture and then handing off to Phoebe for decorating and final touches. In a stroke of serendipity, the unit boasted an identical floor plan to their previous one, but the couple had learned a few things since then. “With just the two of us here for work, we rarely found use for a dining room,” says Jim. In its place, he created an intimate family room where the couple now spends most evenings. To complement the apartment’s classically inspired architectural shell designed by Jim, Phoebe worked through several design concepts. “I had two conflicting ideas,” she shares. “The first was an all-ivory palette punctuated by only the dark colors of antiques and art. But on the other hand, 64

The artwork is by French artist Jean-Pierre Bourquin, represented by TEW Galleries. right The galley kitchen’s intricate floor mosaic, designed by Jim through New Ravenna, is a nod to the building’s midcentury roots, as are the shapely counter stools by Cherner.

I also wanted chintz. I couldn’t figure out how to marry those two ideas, until I came across a brown linen print that made me realize I could, in fact, have both.” Phoebe dressed the family room— from the wallpaper to slipper chair—in the English-inspired floral fabric with its palette of brown, gray and ivory offering the perfect foil to the rest of the apartment’s more neutral rooms. Tying each space together is a myriad of art and antiques collected through their travels abroad. “One of the reasons we find this apartment so peaceful is because we’re surrounded by things that bring back wonderful memories,” says Phoebe. These are among the items she dubs “grace notes.” “One of the things I talk about in my new book [The Principles of Pretty Rooms, Abrams] is how to create a sense of comfort. It’s about feeling good when you’re in a room but you don’t really know why,” explains Phoebe. “And I feel really good when I’m here. We finally got our apartment back and are so happy.” See Resources, Back of Book.

TURNING THE PAGE on a new chapter can be thrilling, and so it was for an urbane couple who traded their traditional single-family home for a far more modern dwelling on the 18th floor of The Charles, a high-rise condominium in the heart of Buckhead. Eager to start a new chapter, the empty nesters sold nearly all their furnishings and hired designer Courtney Giles Decker to create a whole new milieu. “It’s a lot of fun to start from scratch,” says Giles Decker. “We took them in a totally different direction.” Rendered in a palette of neutral hues accented with pops of blue, the space is a warm, sophisticated retreat that emphasizes both the expansive urban vistas and the couple’s collection of art. In the entry, for example, a colorful abstract painting by local artist Leslie Irvine coordinates well with the tufted blue velvet bench underneath it. And the walls in the nearby study are covered in a dark blue grasscloth, creating a relaxing backdrop for a camel-colored corduroy sofa and a cocktail table with a faux ostrich-skin finish. “All the texture makes it feel a little cozier,” explains Giles Decker.

Cozy also describes the open living room, where matching velvet sofas and a pair of swivel chairs covered in a nubby wool fabric create a spot to enjoy the fireplace. Custom black metal flowers surround the firebox, adding a touch of whimsy. “They wanted a little edge,” says Giles Decker. Indeed, while the open kitchen’s perimeter cabinetry is contemporary in form, its visible wood grain juxtaposes the lacquered base of the gleaming white quartz waterfall-style island. The mix also characterizes the master suite, which is furnished with a mohair-covered headboard flanked by painted side tables underneath a tiered rock crystal chandelier. “It has some bling but with an earthy texture,” says Giles Decker. “Dressy but not flashy.” There’s a bit of flash, however, in the guest bathroom, its floral wallcovering providing a soft contrast to the vanity’s visible wood grain and sleek surfaces. “It’s a fresh take on a classic pattern,” says Giles Decker, noting it’s one of her favorites. Because it was under construction during the design process, Decker kept everything in her own warehouse as it arrived, furnishing the space just days before her clients moved in and unveiling the design in a grand reveal. Needless to say, they were overjoyed with the result. “It fits their personality—cool and contemporary but warm and inviting,” says Giles Decker. “I think we balanced it very well.” See Resources, Back of Book.

The inside of the front door is mirrored to visually expand the hallway gallery and create a house of mirrors effect. “I wanted to create a jib door scenario where once you are in, you almost can’t find where you came in and how to get out,” says Litchfield. WHEN RESIDENTIAL DESIGNER William Litchfield and interior designer Carolyn Malone were asked to renovate an apartment in Plaza Towers for homeowners with whom they had a longstanding relationship with, it felt just right. Taking a more modern approach than with the family’s past projects, the duo found ways to add sophisticated style to the celebrated 1960s Buckhead high-rise while still honoring its midcentury design. “This is one of my favorite buildings in Atlanta,” says Litchfield. “It has very clean lines and wonderfully simple details. We decided to have fun and go modern with this city apartment.” Despite constraints, the designers were able to make a clean sweep by taking the 2,000-square-foot space down to its bones and reimagining it for their client’s needs. Aiming to make the space feel bigger, Litchfield raised the height of door openings,

eliminated a wall between the former dining room and kitchen and carved out recesses to accommodate a banquette and bar. These decisions, along with new 4-by-4-foot Italian concrete tile floors and strategically placed mirrors set the foundation for crisp appointments with glamorous undertones. For continuity, Malone only used two paint colors throughout the home—Pure White and Urbane Bronze, both Sherwin-Williams. Fixtures and furnishings continue the play of contrasts. Malone established the mood in the entry by converting the conventional space into a gallery hall. Here, the dark lacquered walls and ceiling host a collection of photography, standouts thanks to their stark white frames. In the dining and kitchen area, a banquette upholstered in bright white faux ostrich sits opposite the dark kitchen wall.

Modern Mix

Opening up a wall between the original kitchen and dining space afforded larger space for entertaining. The open kitchen offers stainless steel counters and shelves for everyday essentials with countertop appliances and storage in cabinets below.

“The copper ribbed tiles have a shimmer to them—much like the lacquered walls and cabinets,” says Malone. In the adjacent living room, furnishings and accessories are equally sleek and sculptural. A sectional sofa so large that it had to be hoisted in by crane dominates the space while a burled walnut cocktail table offers the appearance of three individual pieces. A triptych of framed, salvaged aluminum ceiling panels underscores the modern architecture with their industrial, curvilinear forms. For entertaining, a custom crocodile-embossed leather bar finds a prominent spot in a recessed niche featuring a series of step-backs. “We wanted something sophisticated that made you feel like you were away from home and in the city,” says Malone. While public spaces focus on entertaining, bedrooms are wellappointed, restful retreats. In the second bedroom, a pair of twin beds are cocooned in an envelope of Urbane Bronze and swaths of bronze linen. Despite the small space, the home lives large thanks to intentional design strategies and a restrained use of materials and colors. DONNY GUERCIO AND ROB RIGSBY always knew that when the time came to downsize, they wanted it to be in Plaza Towers, Atlanta’s historical high-rise condominiums in the heart of Buckhead. “The combination of location, square footage and views—plus the fact that there are only four units or less per floor—sold us,” says Guercio. The couple kept an eye on the building for years until at last the perfect unit—a three-bedroom that was just the right size and had the scenery they were looking for—became available. Having been impressed with their work on a neighboring unit in the same building, the couple didn’t hesitate to enlist the expertise of Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos of Mark Williams Design to design their dream condo. “They were really happy with the open kitchen concept because that’s not common in that building,” says Papadopoulos. “They fell in love with the kitchen layout, and when this three-bedroom became available, it was just perfect timing.”

left The designers knocked out the home’s third bedroom to add more space to the living room, where a pair of sofas from RH provide a cozy yet tailored sitting area. opposite Because the second bedroom doubles as a home office, storage was an important factor. Office supplies are cleverly concealed in a floor-toceiling storage cabinet. The carved wood wall hanging is from Andrianna Shamaris.

The clients’ directive: a space that combined modern sensibilities with classic design style. And because they were downsizing—coupled with the fact that Guercio, a realtor, works from home—a balance of function and beauty was imperative. “They wanted a space that was sophisticated and modern, but not too cold and calculated,” says Williams. “Their home needed to be both beautiful and comfortable.” 98

The first step was opening up the home’s footprint, knocking out a bedroom to add more space to the living room and transforming the original galley kitchen into a fresh, open-concept space with an island and plenty of rift-cut white oak kitchen cabinetry. Likewise, built-in storage in the living room and main bedroom achieves a sophisticated yet warm look while keeping clutter at bay. In the second bedroom, which functions as both a guest room and home office, ample cabinetry cleverly conceals office supplies, making it easy to transition from a nine-to-five to hosting guests. To soften the linear look of the home’s more geometric details, the designers anchored the space with a tone-on-tone palette, embracing the natural grains of the millwork, and adding subtle texture to the walls with an off-white grasscloth wallcovering. The final result is a perfect balance of scale, texture and contrast. “From an aesthetic standpoint, it was a constant balance of warm and cold,” says Papadopoulos. “It’s those tiny detailed selections that really make the atmosphere of a space come together.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Streamlined Luxury

Thanks to gray flannel walls and bird’s-eye views of the Buckhead skyline, the main bedroom “feels like a luxe hotel suite,” says Guercio. The bed linens were customsewn by Rigsby. right Storage was a big factor in the bedroom, where seamless, unadorned cabinetry is both decorative and practical. Orange IN LOVE WITH...

is a color that often gets a bad rap as being too brash. To us, it exudes a certain sense of optimism and joyful spirit—and it doesn’t have to be overpowering. Whether it’s a statement-making room full of the bold hue or just a punchy accent or two, these furnishings and accessories reveal that orange is, indeed, worth considering. —Clinton Smith
