Each of the houses featured in this issue is anchored in the time-honored principles of classic design, yet bring a fresh perspective that defines cultivated style today. From Buckhead to the Carolina Lowcountry, the projects offer a sophisticated mix of period antiques with modern art and pops of color that combine to create stylish statements. Speaking of classic sophistication, The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art was founded in 2002 to preserve and promote classical design principles. The prestigious Philip Trammell Shutze Awards are bestowed upon exceptional projects by architects, designers, landscape designers, craftspeople and students. We’re thrilled to share the 2021 winners and their projects with you (page 11). This month, mark your calendar for November 18

Although a perennial favorite, nature-inspired fabrics and wallcoverings don’t always have to radiate the exuberance of a billowing spring garden with a riot of bright colors and blowsy blooms. When the plants’ patterns are rendered in simpler forms and limited palettes, the shape of each leaf, stem and bloom—whether printed, embroidered or woven— becomes more pronounced, often leaving nuanced patterns that captivate the eye, season after season.

SHUTZE SPLENDOR
The 15th-annual Philip Trammell Shutze Awards presented by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art recognize design excellence in the Southeast Produced by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON
ONE OF THE REGION’S MOST STRINGENT design competitions yields stellar results when the annual Shutze Awards are presented. The application process is as exacting and precise as the projects, and only the most accomplished professionals compete at this level. Founded in 2002, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) is a national organization committed to preserving and promoting classical design. The Philip Trammell Shutze Awards were created in 2007 to honor the most esteemed projects in the categories of architecture, interior design, landscape design and crafts-
manship. Each year, three renowned industry peers serve as judges wherein projects are submitted without any names and judged blindly solely on merit. This year Mona Hajj, Donald Ruggles and Mario Nievera were the judges. The prestigious event is held at Atlanta’s Piedmont Driving Club where medals of honor are given to each winner during the black-tie dinner affair. Los Angeles-based designer Madeline Stuart hosted the event that was as rich in talent as she is. Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is thrilled to share the award-winning projects with you on the pages that follow. 11

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This renovation is brilliant. The transformation is remarkable and beautiful. A wonderful expression of Classicism reinterpreted.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Being recognized among the amazing depth of talent in the Southeast design community makes the Shutze award even more humbling. This project is a perfect example of what can happen when clients fully trust their design team to see their home’s potential in ways even they themselves could never envision.” 12

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “Beautifully inventive. It does not break the rules, but twists the rules on their side to tell the story of two houses. Classical detailing with a twist.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Reinterpreting the classic form of the historic single houses found in nearby Charleston, we were able to design an imaginative marsh-front home that honors the region’s architectural traditions while celebrating the client’s eclectic, contemporary tastes and creative vision.” 13

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “The details give an elegant, timeless appeal to the home, yet there’s a relaxed, intimate and casual feel within each interior space. Beautiful sensitivity overall.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “This was a wonderful project to work on, and the clients are incredible stewards of the property. We want our homes to feel personal and to have a soul so this project feels historically accurate, but not stiff. In total, it was the perfect combination of all a designer’s wishes: absolutely wonderful clients, talented architects at Historical Concepts, a terrific builder and incorporating Bob Christian’s trompe l’oeil magic.” 14

The rhythms of the plantings and hardscape create a resonance that’s beautiful to behold.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “We invested significant research into the 18th-century landscapes surrounding the James River. From the entrance gates and other hardscape elements to the plantings, the entire property was carefully considered to be historically accurate yet appropriate for today’s lifestyle. Our clients are passionate about preservation, so this project was incredibly important to all of us, and we are deeply honored to receive this award from the ICAA.”

Using the woods and incredible mountain views as our inspiration, we filled the house with antiques and vintage fabrics that echo the textures and color palette of the natural surroundings. WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “Biophilic design is king here as the views connect to the forest allowing the owners to enjoy an environment that supports rest and relaxation. Each room is like a canvas within the landscape.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Of all the houses we’ve designed, this North Carolina getaway is one that touched our hearts deeply. We wanted to create an environment that was like no place the owners had ever been, yet, paradoxically, they would feel they had always known. The earthy characteristics of the home such as the dark bronze roof and mossy-green exterior cladding give the house a chameleonlike quality, helping it meld quietly into its densely wooded backdrop.”

2021 Home for the Holidays Showhouse
BETTER BUILT Written and Produced by JENNIFER BRADLEY FRANKLIN
HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS SHOWHOUSE There’s no better way for design enthusiasts to get in the spirit than with a tour of the Home for the Holidays Showhouse
(atlantaholidayhome.com), presented by Logan Design Group.
MUCH HAS BEEN SAID about the rising prices being asked—and paid—for real estate in metro Atlanta. The same goes for teardowns being sold to builders and individuals who plan to build from the ground up. Case in point: Builder Michael Ladisic of Ladisic Fine Homes (ladisicfinehomes.com) recently paid $1.4 million for a teardown in historic Brookhaven and sold the lot, plus a yet-to-be-built custom home, in a matter of two months. “We’re having such a lack of inventory,” says Annette Ross, an agent with Harry Norman Realtors (harrynorman.com). “There’s only so much land we can build on in [Atlanta], or any city including Alpharetta, Roswell and Vinings.” When builder
Stan Benecki of Benecki Homes (beneckihomes.com) moved to Atlanta in the 1990s, he could find prime lots on top Buckhead roads like Blackland, Valley and Tuxedo for $300,000 to $500,000. “Today for one of those lots I’ll have to pay in the mid-$3 million for a teardown. To be on a prime street [in Buckhead], it’s probably at least $2 million for the lot,” he says, adding that ultralow interest rates have partially driven the market. “Demand dictates how much someone is willing to pay,” says Ross, who doesn’t think we’re close to the Atlanta-area teardown bubble bursting. “We just can’t build fast enough. I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon unless the interest rates dramatically change.”

Naomi Von Habersham NOT A WEEK GOES by when I don’t think about how behind the times I can sometimes be. Just the other day, I attended a dinner party where everyone gushed about some TV show called The White Lotus. When I asked which cable channel was airing it, everyone looked at me, first with bewilderment, then pity. Someone had to explain to me that one, it’s a streaming series, and two, no one really watches cable anymore. That was news to me, which I suppose is hardly surprising considering that not only do I not stream, I barely even watch TV anymore. Instead, my nightly entertainment is reading mystery novels published close to a century ago. While my fondness for the past may put me completely out of touch with pop culture and technology, it’s proving to be an asset when it comes to interior decorating. In fact, there is so much buzz currently swirling around tried-and-true design classics that many objects in my home are actually trending! A decade ago, my collection of porcelain fruits and vegetables drew howls from visitors. But today, in the wake of that epic Mario Buatta auction, lettuce ware and ceramic produce are all the rage. The same goes for my needlepoint pillows: relics not so long ago, but on trend once again. In the design world at large, all kinds of classic decorations are riding a wave of popularity. Chintz, decoratively painted furniture, even faience has become a thing again, although admittedly not among everyone. Meanwhile, decorative styles which haven’t been on the design radar for a while are suddenly piquing people’s interest once again, like French Provincial and Empire. And antiques, beloved by many of us but not always universally appreciated, are attracting new and sometimes unexpected admirers, including a slew of diehard modernists. Call it a reaction to the nearly 20-year dominance of Midcentury Modernism, a moment in time when everything old suddenly seems new again, or even an escape to the certainty of the past. Whatever the reason, classic design is having a moment again, and frankly, it’s about time.

“EVERY DAY IS A GOOD DAY.” It’s the slogan that legendary pitmaster Rodney Scott has lived by for decades, and it holds true at the newly opened Adair Park, Atlanta, location of famed barbecue joint Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ. In partnership with Nick Pihakis, the restaurant serves major flavor in an assortment of plates including pit-cooked chicken, steak, “these ain’t no babies” ribs, the famed wholehog pork offerings plus more. Sides such as baked beans, collard greens, hush puppies and creamy mac and cheese give a true Southern welcome, while the vinegar-based barbecue sauce taps into Scott’s Eastern South Carolina roots. The largest of his three locations, the Atlanta restaurant is also the only one with the pit located inside the kitchen— crowned the “pitchen.” Once an old repair station, the structure reminds Scott of his childhood and barbecue beginnings. With that in mind, keep an eye—or nose—open for the smell of approval upon entering Rodney Scott’s. According to the pitmaster, that’s the first sign barbecue lovers should look for when trying a new establishment. “There’s an aroma when you first walk in the door, if you don’t catch it outside, that will tell you, ‘This place has good barbecue,’” says Scott. And if the smoky aroma, the inviting environment that mirrors Sunday suppers at grandma’s, or even Scott’s James Beard Award haven’t assured that this barbecue hotspot is the real deal, it won’t take long to get there. As for what’s next, the pitmaster has ambitious goals of opening a Rodney Scott’s on every corner of the U.S. In the meantime, however, Scott says he’ll content himself with “a sigh of appreciation, a deep breath that says hard work does pay off, and most importantly, keeping my foot on the gas and not letting up.”

left To align better with the architecture, Willis replaced the travertine floor in the foyer with black and white marble tiles to create a more formal and classical aesthetic. right An English Regency writing desk is framed by formal draperies and offers a peaceful view to the garden. Willis was inspired by renowned designer Dan Carithers to collect creamware—decorating the desk with pieces from Garry Atkins.
RARELY DO LIFE CHANGES segue seamlessly, but when designer Caroline Willis decided to move during the pandemic, the process was a study in serendipity. The stately 1930s home that she and her family had occupied for more than a decade was in need of a significant renovation in the kitchen and bathrooms. Facing the disruption of overhauling her home, Willis decided to look at options on the market. When she went to preview a new listing near her house, she was certain her family could get the space they needed while remaining in their existing neighborhood. “From the moment we walked in, we knew it was the perfect home for our family,” says Willis. As she toured the house, something familiar struck a chord. “I recognized many of the upholstery pieces, and soon realized that the owner is a furniture representative I know,” says Willis. The new breakfast room table and family room sofa worked so beautifully in the house, as well as with Willis’ existing pieces, that she purchased those with the home.

The living room is a study in old and new. Anchored by an Oushak rug from Keivan Woven Arts, the space features tufted chairs from Willis’ grandmother that are upholstered in Highland Court fabric. A contemporary painting by Kimo Minton counters the chinoiserie-inspired table from Rose Tarlow through Jerry Pair.
The kitchen, bathrooms and hardwood floors were in pristine condition, and the gracious room sizes and well-proportioned architectural details provided the ideal backdrop for Willis’ collection of fine art and furniture. Mike Hammersmith worked quickly to accommodate changing the existing limestone foyer floor to black and white marble so that the home feels timeless and classic from the moment one enters. Willis curated furniture spanning centuries and continents so that every piece is appropriate for its place. From a stunning American Duncan Phyfe console table, to a sprinkling of English and French antiques, to contemporary upholstery, the house feels refined and elegant, yet approachable and comfortable for the young family. Works by noted contemporary artists including Sally King Benedict, Kimo Minton and Edy Gosselin offer a cultivated edge that balances the traditional furniture. 37

However, when he retreats to his office, he might pick up his Les Paul guitar or play a rock ’n’ roll set on his new drums—another purchase from the former owners. “Not only was it incredible to find this gorgeous home during the pandemic, but it’s amazing that all of our furniture, draperies and rugs fit so beautifully—it really is the perfect home for us,” says Willis. Finding perfection during the pandemic has been difficult, but this family found their flawless forever home—just around the corner. See Resources, Page 78.

WHEN A COUPLE AND THEIR two young boys began the hunt for a home that would fit their active lifestyle, it’s no wonder they landed in Atlanta’s Chastain Park. So, when the perfect lot appeared with a not-so-perfect 1950s ranch built in a floodplain, the homeowners called in an expert design team to build a home that was tailored to a T.

windows lend a bit of gracefulness to the open floor plan, which begins in the entryway with the formal dining room before pinwheeling back to common areas. Clever workarounds—such as a mudroom that became a second office space when needed or a basement-style transformation on the third floor—make the home more conducive to the family’s needs. “The floor plan isn’t traditionally laid out, and we knew it was paramount to get not only the flow but the sightlines between each room just right,” says Orr. The same can be said for the interior design, where designers Angela Means and Danielle Carney of Means Carney Interiors introduced clean, classic elements that stand the test of time—and stand up against dirt and spills. “With two active boys it was important for her to make sure the house was not only beautiful, but also livable; a place where family can relax and not feel stressed about the wear and tear of daily life,” says Means. Performance fabrics in bold patterns dress rooms in both form and function. Because the wife is an art enthusiast with an appreciation for bright colors, the designers infused happy hues throughout. homeowners who are avid entertainers, is bathed in a rich green, while other spaces, such as the breakfast area, primary bedroom and family room are a lesson in layers with traditional blue and green fabrics commingling with various neutral tones and textures. “Our interior selections are always inspired by our clients” shares Carney. “The fabric choices reflect some of the homeowner’s wardrobe staples, like her navy handbag or fabulous green boots.” Though the homeowners wanted space to comfortably fit dozens of guests during dinner parties, the home also had to have pockets where each family member could retreat. The mudroom is a catchall for baseball gear and backpacks, but also contains a desk for a quiet corner to complete homework or answer emails. Outside, a covered porch’s cozy fireplace and seating offers a year-round escape. And with the project completed just before the pandemic, the homeowners were granted the time to truly settle in and relish their perfect home, says Orr. “During shelter-in-place, [the wife] kept saying, ‘It feels like we’re on vacation.’ There’s nothing more we could have asked for.” See Resources, Page 78. 54

IT’D BE EASY TO MISTAKE Pamela Harrington’s home as a sun-dappled chateau tucked into France’s rolling countryside. But its stateside, Lowcountry setting in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, specifically makes it all the more intriguing. Authentic French details, from stone floors to antique doors—coupled with expansive views of South Carolina’s famed salt marshes through steel windows—offer a juxtaposition of sorts; a contrast that captures the best of Harrington’s worlds. While Kiawah Island is home base for her family and business (she founded her successful real estate firm, Pam Harrington Exclusives, in 1978), France speaks to Harrington’s sense of adventure. Her love affair with the country’s Provençal charms began decades ago on a trip with her husband Monte. She’s since returned to France yearly, each time bringing back home an antique memento (or three). 65

Layered Look
An antique armoire in the great room conceals a television. The custom chaise offers Harrington a cozy spot to catch up on her favorite shows, but it can just as easily double as a love seat when entertaining guests. Notable antiques include the French mantel and chairs from Harrington’s previous home, which Huff had re-covered in Rayure Nantes by Clarence House.
“Pam loves to find the diamond in the rough,” says her go-to designer Will Huff of Huff-Dewberry, Inc. “She’s always on the hunt and it’s not unusual for me to get a call from Pam while I’m out hiking on the weekend to ask my opinion on a chair she’s fallen in love with at a Parisian market.” The call Huff received from Harrington about three years ago though wasn’t about any one antique in particular, but rather all of her antiques. After Monte’s passing, Harrington wished to downsize and called upon Huff’s expertise once again. “It took several visits to Pam’s old home to take a full inventory of her [art and antiques] collection and it was fun to hear the story behind each piece; whether she got it when she was with her husband or friends, or she had previously worked with Dan Carithers, so they purchased many antiques together as well,” recalls Huff. With this home boasting a smaller footprint, space planning was paramount to incorporate as many pieces as possible, chiefly those that held sentimental value. A beloved three-panel 1780s tapestry, for example, graces the dining room and when one antique armoire couldn’t fit into the new home’s layout, the doors were utilized as access to an attic storage space. 69

Toiles, checks and other fabrics throughout the home further speak to the French design vernacular. Fittingly, the exterior boasts equal appeal. “We wanted the home to feel approachable and not too formal,” says Huff. To that end, in lieu of centrally located grand front doors, guests make their way through the front garden, being greeted by classical statues and then stepping through an archway onto a petite side-entry porch decorated with an antique console, mirror and porcelains. “You feel like you’re in this cozy little nook,” explains Huff. “It wasn’t designed to ‘wow’ you as much as it was to make you feel comfortable. Entering the home through the gardens makes you feel like you’re discovering the home; there’s something magical and very charming to it.” See Resources, Page 78. 73

both stimulates our senses and conveys a sense of calm. Often associated with the world’s nobility and royalty, it’s just as at home in less rarefied spaces—from powder rooms to family rooms. But don’t dismiss the color’s flexibility—and crowning achievement—to inspire, enchant and delight. —Clinton Smith

a bout the showhouse
WELCOME TO THE 2021 HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS Designer Showhouse & Marketplace presented by Logan Design Group and benefiting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. This year’s Showhouse ushers in the season with a new English Regency residence on a 2-acre lot in Buckhead’s Paces neighborhood. Dietrich T. Logan of Logan Design Group returns as architect and developer of this year’s showhouse, an 11,383-square-foot home brimming with symmetry, classical design and simplistic elegance. A limestone front entry spans both floors, surrounded by antique brick and details such as stacked sets of large windows and eyebrow dormers that are characteristic of Regency architecture. Modernized exterior elements include the large, open entryway with a steel door and steel windows, an iron railing, and the use of Ludowici roof tile instead of traditional wood shake. A second floor balcony, accessed from the lounge, overlooks the motor court and four-car garage. The layout of the home, which has five bedrooms, five full and three half baths, takes advantage of the wooded backyard and pool views. A focus on function and active lifestyles for today’s families led to free flowing design in the dining room, great room,

office, breakfast room and kitchen. Gentle vaults and curves soften the ceilings to create a relaxed ambience. Cabinetry with clean lines, natural finishes and wide-plank floors speak to the home’s transitional interiors. The fireside great room and loggia join via expansive folding doors, while the first floor guest bedroom and owners’ suite open to the outdoor living space as well. In the owners’ suite, a twosided fireplace connects the bedroom and bathroom, and dual closet spaces enjoy a shared island. The pool extends to a cabana with an outdoor kitchen, seating areas and a 72-inch fireplace. Inside, passageways include an elevator and two stairways: one being an “atrium stair” that will appear to float from the upper floor to the terrace level. The 2,000-plus finished square feet on the terrace level features a recreation room, a cardio room, a wine room and a seasonal closet. Additional spaces include two mudrooms, a dog wash, and upstairs and downstairs laundry rooms. Logan partnered with Buffy Ferguson of Elizabeth Ferguson Design for the interior specifications, and the home showcases the talent of nearly 20 of the Southeast’s top interior designers.

general information
welcome from the team
Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is delighted to present the 13th-annual Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse benefiting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Not only is this Wintertime tradition a showcase of some of the region’s most esteemed design talents, but it’s also a celebration of the warmth and magic of the holiday season—and the timeless traditions that define this special time of year. Susan Bozeman, Carter Kay, and Liza Bryan serve as our 2021 Honorary Chairs, and we are also honored to partner once again with our beneficiary, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, to support their commitment to provide specialized healthcare for children. During the run of showhouse, don’t miss a lineup of inspiring holiday events, including pop-up shops and floral demonstrations, candlelight tours and more. As you tour the showhouse, we encourage you to take inspiration and holiday spirit from the Atlanta design community’s incomparable talent.

WHERE YOU TAKE THEM MATTERS
No matter how small or tall, Children’s is here. Whether your child is learning to walk or learning to drive, their growing body needs special care. Children’s has unparalleled expertise because we only treat kids and teens. From the simple to the complex, injuries and illnesses that affect kids and teens should be treated by a pediatric specialist, not an adult provider. No matter their age, take your child to the specialists at Children’s. Visit choa.org to learn more. ©2021 Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Inc. All rights reserved.

Dietrich Thomas Logan was born in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, in 1979. His interest in architecture developed in his early years after winning an elementary school contest for drawing a house. While growing up in North Carolina, Dietrich was afforded opportunities to visit numerous historic architectural sites, including the Biltmore Estate, which heightened his interest in residential architecture. His pursuit of architecture continued at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC-C), where he studied theological and transitional aspects of architecture. In addition to the rigorous curriculum, Dietrich designed and constructed homes for Habitat for Humanity. He received a Bachelors of Arts in Architecture from UNC-C in 2001. After graduation, he relocated to Atlanta with aspirations to practice residential architecture and started working at Harrison Design, where he participated in numerous residential projects including custom homes and historic renovations. He was also able to apply his knowledge and skills into the built environment through construction administration. Dietrich furthered his architectural studies at Southern Polytechnic State University, receiving a Bachelors of Architecture in 2005. After seven years at Harrison Design, Dietrich left to start his own design firm in 2008, LOGAN DESIGN GROUP INTERNATIONAL, and a construction firm, LOGAN DEVELOPMENT GROUP, in 2015. Since then, Dietrich has worked on many high-end residential estates throughout the Southeast, and has designed multi-storied commercial structures in Georgia and Florida. He currently resides in Vinings, Georgia with his wife, and together they have four kids—all of whom participate in the company’s success. Dietrich is a member of the American Institute of Architects and a registered member of the National Council of Architecture Registration Boards. He is licensed in Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Maryland, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Michigan, Massachusetts, and Florida. Bradley Odom
radley Odom Design is a collaborative design practice, and our first intent is to focus on the natural surroundings of the project. You’ll see that thread of commonality that runs throughout the project regardless of the scope—be it one room or the entire house. An outgrowth of the Dixon Rye brand, with a studio in the loft above the store, we are known for our aesthetic of mixing old with the the new—raw and refined; expertly envisioned and masterfully mixed. Southern influences continue to seep in everywhere to our work, along with a passion for craftsmanship and product design.
