time reflecting on what brings me joy in life. I’m not talking about the knowns—family, friends, a roof over my head—but the lessobvious happenings. Like scoring a unique find from an antiques store, or watching my living-room plant come back to life after a few too many close calls. There’s something special about waking up extra early to read a page-turner before work, and my day is especially made when I pull up to a car with a dog’s head sticking out the window, tongue lapping in the wind with sheer excitement. This process of finding daily delights is second nature for the design professionals featured in our November issue, who all played key roles in creating elegant, grandiose estates for their clients to find comfort in. In Brookhaven, a new home by Rodolfo Castro, Suzanne Kasler, Michael Ladisic, and Alec Michaelides appears as though it’s always been part of the neighborhood thanks to its

historic charm and classic character (page 44). Nearby, Beth Webb revisits a grand dame of a home to infuse European elegance for her antique-loving clients (page 62). And in Sherwood Forest, a builder became the client on their stately forever home by Susan Bozeman, Norman Askins, and Jonathan Bussell (page 78). Also inside: We reveal the winners of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s 2024 Shutze Awards (page 19), and share what shopping carts this season (page 12). Back again this month: AH&L opens the doors to our annual Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse, a history-rich, traditional home lovingly renovated by a standout design team. Benefiting the Atlanta History Center, this is certainly a house you don’t want to miss. Open for tours starting November 21st!

Tasteful Trim
“Who doesn’t love a good trim? Porte Parisien from the PALOMA CONTRERAS collection with SCHUMACHER is so neutral and versatile, and I can imagine so many different applications. I’m especially loving it to outline the back of dining chairs—the options are endless.” schumacher.com
Delicate Touch
“Grandmillenial is so back and this sweet floral from BANNER HOME could go anywhere. The pattern is feminine and impactful with great color to pull from—it would make a gorgeous starting place for any traditional home, nursery, or as an accent to warm up a neutral space. Also, I love a stripe, and there is no wrong application for this fun and punchy one.” banner-home.com 12
Ocean Envy “The size of this COLLIER WEBB accent light makes it so usable, and how fun is the sea scallop shape? I love that it’s hinged so the depth can be adjusted, which only increases its potential. I plan to place it on beach projects as a stairway sconce or as a fun task light for bunks.” Available through AinsworthNoah; collierwebb.com

“I love the soft and muted palette of DE GOURNAY’s Nordic Garden wallcovering. Michael Smith took a refined chinoiserie paper, made it rustic, and colored it to the tones of a North European palette. Opening the Door to Possibility in Architecture & Design Bill Harrison believed that architecture was not merely a career; it was a lifelong passion that he passed along to students through exposure to the building arts, inclusive education, mentorship opportunities, and the exploration and collaboration of ideas. The Foundation’s work continues to focus on creating opportunities for students to explore the world of architecture and its impact on individuals’ lives and the environments around them, with a particular emphasis on
underserved and underrepresented youth. Our mission is to empower and support these students, the architects of the future, forming a one-on-one connection that begins in high school and continues through precollege programs, mentorship programs, college scholarships, and study abroad programs. The foundation has impacted over 400 students in the past two years through its programming, sponsorships and scholarships.

LASTING LEGACY The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art celebrates exceptional classical design at the 18th-annual PHILIP TRAMMELL SHUTZE AWARDS Produced by THE EDITORS
COINED THE “CITY IN THE FOREST” and replete with historic houses and sprawling green spaces, Atlanta is home to many renowned architects, designers, and creatives. And for one night a year, the city’s top industry professionals gather to recognize the region’s best and brightest at the most anticipated awards ceremony of the season, the Philip T. Shutze Awards. Named after famed Atlanta architect Philip Trammell Shutze, the prestigious award honors the talented architects, designers, landscape architects, and other design experts who are committed to
preserving and upholding classical design. With a highly competitive submission process, the winners were anonymously selected by this year’s jurors interior designer Courtney Coleman, landscape architect Melissa Reavis, and architect Tim Barber. Following deliberation, the elegant soirée was held at the Piedmont Driving Club in October with nearly 300 industry professionals dressed in black-tie and gathered to celebrate the multitalented winners. Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles was in attendance and is delighted to share the award-winning projects with you. 19

ARCHITECTURE - RESIDENTIAL RENOVATION OVER 5,000 SF
Isle of Hope Residence, Isle of Hope, Georgia
NORMAN DAVENPORT ASKINS, ARCHITECTS WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “A polished reinvention of an 1860s plains house in the language of a plantation house. The new plan keeps the original front parlors while arranging more open family areas and embracing a large screened porch. The rear structures bring symmetry to pragmatic functionality. Inside, a splendid new staircase and Greek and Revival details all elevate the formal spaces and significant rooms. The kitchen and service areas are restrained and modest, yet the cheeky bar is paneled like Mt. Vernon. The site design demonstrates that a long and narrow lot can live large.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work for a family with young children who had a great vision for a generational Southern home in a charming island enclave.”

RUARD VELTMAN ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS
WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This subtle Italianate renovation pares down the classical front facade and conceals a two-story expansion to the rear with a conservatory-style dining room, light-filled primary bedroom, and new elevator. Highly symmetric with calculated scale and proportion, the design bends rules with poetic invention.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “This modestly sized, villa-like home was a pleasure to renovate; it accomplishes the pairing of both the serene, quiet moments of its surroundings with a home that has opportunity for great gatherings. Throughout the symmetrically designed home, architectural antique elements provide sophistication, warmth, and personality.”

French Pavilion, Atlanta, Georgia SUMMEROUR ARCHITECTS
WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “An artful reimagining of an iconic 1980s structure, this design subtly adds significant square footage to a compact footprint. The renovation reinforces symmetry, rhythm, and scale in the plan and very flat relief-work in the elevations. The restrained elegance of the interior details and the circular geometry is extended into landscape elements.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “We had an amazing team and delightful clients that made this home a pleasure to design. It was a challenging and highly visible lot. Our job was to work within the same footprint, but make it the best possible version of itself, enhancing the French Pavilion style of the original home.”

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “The designer took what could have been a difficult assignment of fitting the client’s collection of extraordinary antiques and art into a contemporary condominium setting—managing the task with such panache that the results could not be more chic or elegant. The relatively spare setting of the furniture highlights its beautiful shapes, while elements like dramatic scenic wallpaper panels, surprising redlacquered library, and bold upholstery fabrics give the home a contemporary and livable character.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Sometimes you work on a project where everything is too good to be true. This project was not work, it was pure joy. And to win the Shutze Award is just icing on the cake. I am honored and overwhelmed.”

Rancho Sabino Grande, Utopia, Texas PEACE DESIGN
WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This house feels cinematic in its scope, complexity, and incredibly personal narrative. What seems like a dream project for a designer—travel the world collecting furnishings and inspiration—resulted in a home that feels utterly unique, yet very much of its place. The decor doesn’t just complement the strong architecture of the house, but it layers elements to create transporting spaces.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “As a native Southerner with an interest in classicism, earning this award is particularly rewarding. The legacy property of Rancho Sabino Grande demonstrates the pillars and ideals of the ICAA, and my team and I are very proud to accept this honor.”

Woodward, Atlanta, Georgia SUZANNE KASLER INTERIORS
WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This project is a master class in timeless design with its mix of furniture styles and proportions, artfully arranged to complement the strong existing architecture. When one realizes that it is a redesign incorporating existing furniture and art, it seems even more masterful. The consistent color palette unifies the rooms, with subtle changes in finish giving complexity and providing a glowing backdrop for sculptural antiques and contemporary furnishings. Elements like beautifully constructed draperies and artful arrangements of precious objects and art are further evidence of the master’s hand.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “This personal project is fulfilling as I was both the designer and client. I had total creative freedom. Designing my own home allows me to push the envelope and by establishing a foundation of tradition, I was able to take risks; I really used our house as a laboratory.”

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This industrial-inspired house quietly innovates within hierarchy, symmetry, scale, and proportion. Using excellent craftsmanship, the design thoughtfully integrates the home into a waterfront site. A second-floor stair landing doubles as a library and gateway to the writer’s attic above. Inventive use of artificial lighting and paneled walls makes alchemy of the familiar.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “It is a true honor to not only be entrusted with designing the personal home of such an esteemed design colleague, but for our collaborative efforts to be recognized by this jury. A Trans-Atlantic Courtyard House, Atlanta, Georgia D. STANLEY DIXON ARCHITECT
WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “A spare, starkly simple project with command of symmetry, scale, and proportion, yet no classical symbols make it undefinable. A graceful staircase, European limestone flooring and mantels, reclaimed beams, and thick walls with hand-worked plaster bring detailing into focus, revealing a seamless collaboration between the decorator and the architect. The house is frequently connected to the outdoors with loggia and covered-porch spaces where you are not fully exposed.”
PHOTOS BY ERIC PIASECKI
WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Our clients were inspired by a historic stone farm building in Europe, but sought a more simple interpretation. By exercising restraint in details and staying true to classical proportions, we created a home that seamlessly balances Old-World charm with fresh, elegant simplicity.”

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “Masterfully blending the classical and Art Deco influences of Cuba, this oceanfront family home solves the challenge of a side approach. Balconies, awnings, and operable shutters articulate a tropical language. Innovation abounds through rounded Deco corners, graceful curves everywhere, and a new limestone composite material cladding the conservatory.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Making an heirloom home and a comfortable family gathering place was a simple remit, but making it a showcase for our client’s revolving art collection while opening it to the Atlantic beachfront was the real challenge. FIELD LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “An elegant project that masterfully negotiates a tough entry sequence with a sloping grade and asymmetrical approach. The landscape feels like a thoughtful extension of the building through the use of complementary materials and a proportional scale in the planting. The jury also appreciated the high level of craftsmanship displayed in the paving details of the front motor court. A wonderful example of classical design.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “The project’s success reflects the collaborative effort of the talented team and the trust our clients placed in us to bring their vision to life. It was a true pleasure to design a landscape that they will cherish for years to come.”

The plant palette, while minimal, shows a mastery of the region’s ecology and the entire landscape feels timeless and elegant.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “As with all our work, we seek to imbue our designs with timeless appeal, creating uniquely appointed settings for our clients to call home. The Cornerstone Building, Atlanta, Georgia HISTORICAL CONCEPTS
WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This new four-story, mixed-use structure captures the spirit of early-20th century classical buildings found in downtown Atlanta. The resulting structure is now a source of neighborhood pride for a diverse population.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Glenwood Park is an exemplar that shows traditional mixed-use neighborhoods can still be built today. It was a tremendous honor when Charles Brewer invited Historical Concepts to be a part of the design team that helped make this special place a reality.”

SEBASTIAN VON MARSCHALL ARCHITECT WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “The building sits comfortably within an existing garden and manages to bring program to a part of the landscape that was likely underutilized. This garden folly shows a masterful understanding of scale and proportion, and the jury appreciated the sense of whimsy with the tented ceiling.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “The folly exemplifies how traditional architecture remains relevant today. While the classical design honors its historic environs and precedent, 3-D modeling and CNC fabrication make use of contemporary construction methods. The result is grounded in history for modern living.”

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “What at first seems like a humble sporting lodge turns out to be a clever resort that is anything but typical. Careful attention was paid to details, which create a low-key and relaxed environment rooted in South Georgia.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “This was a unique opportunity to work on a large-scale project for owners who had a grand vision. It was also a great collaboration with Historical Concepts, The Berndsen Co., and Hollander Design, who worked tirelessly to meet an expedited timeline and transform the existing property into a beautiful retreat.” 30

Perhaps Atlanta’s most elegant neighborhood, Tuxedo Park’s visibility is highest on the iconic drive down West Paces Ferry. The road is lined by the Governor’s Mansion and the Neel Reid Colonial Revival known as Arden—famously inspired by George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate—plus a collection of architecturally significant homes, from Georgian and Greek Revival to Tudor and Italian. Generally bounded by West Paces Ferry on the south; Roswell Road on the east; Putnam, King, Tuxedo, and Blackland on the north; and Northside Drive on the west, every street is worthy of a gawk, defined by sprawling estates on large, tree-filled lots.

7,100 HISTORY In the 1800s, the land was owned by James H. Smith and was the main thoroughfare to the Chattahoochee River. It was mostly rural until land started changing hands, notably to James L. Dickey Sr. in 1903, to-bemayor Robert Maddox in 1904, then to Charles Black, who is credited for much of the development. These and other prominent Atlantans began building summer homes along Paces Ferry (their primary residences were in the busy city center, just 6 miles south). While most homes transitioned to full-time as Buckhead transformed, the tradition of wellheeled owners and the most revered architects remained.

“Tuxedo Park’s greatest asset is the natural beauty of the perfectly rolling landscape, complemented by some of the finest homes and architecture found anywhere. The neighborhood is home to a fascinating mix of residents, each with their own unique story.”
—Ben Hirsch, Tuxedo Park Resident and Realtor at Hirsch Real Estate
FUTURE
The future of Tuxedo Park is all about preserving its historic nature—“the charm and allure of the rolling hills, the original land plan with large lots, and protecting the tree canopy,” says Gigi Rouland, resident and former Tuxedo Park Civic Association (TPCA) president. “We’re advocates for Tuxedo Park’s integrity, beauty, and sustainability.” According to resident and TPCA advocate Gloria Cheatham, who had a critical hand in the process, an application for a proposed Tuxedo Park Historic District has been approved by the Georgia State Preservation Division and will be presented to the Georgia National Register Review Board at its November 1 meeting. One change Tuxedo Park embraces? New neighbors—TPCA has its highest membership on record, with more social events being planned, according to Rouland. Along with the historic district, Tuxedo Park also welcomed parts of Chastain Park, including King, Pineland, and a sliver of Powers Ferry. 36
IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW
The City of Atlanta gifted 3488 Tuxedo Road to beloved golfer Bobby Jones after his famous Grand Slam in 1930. The home (which will be listed by Ansley Real Estate Christie’s International this winter following its run as the 2024 Home for the Holidays Showhouse) has been renovated, but the wood-paneled walls in the study remain intact. Legend says that Bobby Jones and Cliff Roberts developed the concept of the Masters Tournament in this very room.
BIG BRAG
One of Charles Black’s early Tuxedo Park advertisements read, “the preservation of the beauty and the architecture of the section will be rigidly observed.” In 2023, the Atlanta City Council unanimously approved the Special Public Interest District 25 (SPI 25), which gives important protection to the Tuxedo Park neighborhood’s most important characteristic: the deep lots and thoughtful placement of residences that have, since the inception of Tuxedo Park in the early 1900s, made the neighborhood a true park-like community.

Naomi Von Habersham A FEW FRIENDS AND I were recently discussing how no matter where we live or how many times we might move, there are some design traditions that stay with us. One friend has had four different homes over the past 20 years, but in all of them he has made sure to have a black-and-white checkerboard floor in his kitchen. Another friend has a thing for leopard-print carpet. Because of work, she has lived in New York City, Seattle, and now Atlanta. Although the style of her homes has varied throughout her career, the one thing they have had in common is leopard-print carpet in at least one room. For me, it’s patterned wallpaper. Over the years, I have moved from a condo to a house and then back to a condo, and in all of them, patterned wallpaper has been a constant. I’ve had chinoiserie prints, star patterns, and trompe l’oeil designs, not to mention a good-looking gray and black geometric paper that I once used in a powder room. It seems that my friends and I are in good company, because all the legendary decorators had their own design traditions. An Albert Hadley interior wasn’t an Albert Hadley interior without a note of black or a splash of red somewhere in the room. Like my friend, Madeleine Castaing was also a devotee of leopard print, so much so that she enveloped Jean Cocteau’s study in it. (Castaing also had major affection for tented rooms, but that’s a story for another day.) Michael Taylor was drawn to potted trees the way I am to wallpaper. Look at his later work, and you’ll nary see a room without a ficus or some other tree. And Mario Buatta? Where do I begin? Floral chintzes, dog paintings hung with bows, and blueand-white porcelains. Needlepoint rugs, needlepoint pillows, and English antique furniture. Was there a traditional furnishing that Mario didn’t love? Although trying out new design elements is to be encouraged, so is maintaining one’s traditions. Without them, our homes just wouldn’t feel like home. 39

A NEW VIRGINIA-HIGHLAND EATERY proves change can be a good thing after all. At La Moon, experience a melody of traditional Asian flavors from Thailand and Vietnam to Japan, with a touch of French influence. No stranger to running successful Atlanta hot spots, industry veteran Bell Chabchit co-operates Tiki Thai on Howell Mill Road. With this beloved Atlanta venture to dot his resume, it’s no wonder that owners of Mai Kitchen approached Chabchit to ask for help transforming their struggling restaurant into a fresh, successful concept. Partnering with the owners and taking over Mai Thai’s previous location, La Moon is Virginia-Highland’s new not-sohidden gem. Situated on the main drag and featuring large windows that open up to the street for alfresco dining, the new neighbor is in the heart of it all. “What I like about the area is its unique culture of people,” says Chabchit. “We fit in and mix well in that environment.” Rooted in history, the restaurant reflects on a time when France occupied Asian land resulting in French influence 40

found in their culture and food. Inside, a wall of red-painted brick—reminiscent of French-style homes in old towns of Thailand and Vietnam—spans the length of the space, and a meticulously hand-painted mural by the bar depicts a Vietnamese scene with merchant ships arriving at port, trading foreign goods. Continuing the historical narrative, retro French and Asian photographs create lively gallery walls. Deep reds and golds threaded throughout offer a bold atmosphere mirrored in the daring menu chock-full of beloved Asian dishes with surprising twists. Inspired to pursue a career in the culinary field by the women in his family—including his sister and mother, who operate a restaurant in London— Chabchit incorporates memorable dishes from his childhood like the Shrimp Cray Pot with glass noodles, Gulf shrimp, and pork belly. IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW BETTER, it’s easy to assume this traditional beauty in Atlanta’s Brookhaven neighborhood has always been there—and that’s exactly the sense of place intended by residential designer Rodolfo Castro. Fronted by an elegantly manicured lawn, the newly built home easily blends in the historic neighborhood with its rich millwork and trim work, yet it feels current and clean with a brick front facade and siding seamlessly coated in white. “One of the best compliments I received was from someone who thought it was an old house,” says Castro. “The style is more traditional than what we usually do, but I loved polishing off my classical design skills.” Castro worked closely with renowned interior designer Suzanne Kasler, builder Michael Ladisic, and landscape architect Alec Michaelides of Land Plus. Catering to empty nesters who often host their three daughters and their growing families, the team executed a home with open, flowing spaces for ease of living and a bevy of windows that offer abundant light and a

Kasler, who’s worked with the clients on three homes, tailored interiors around their request for an uncluttered, yet sophisticated aesthetic. “They desired a foundation of tradition, but also a fresh, younger house with a simplistic way of living,” says Kasler, who peppered the quiet-luxury home in elegant wallcoverings, bold tiles, and hand-selected artwork. “Because the house is so quiet, art ended up being a 54
big accent piece.” While the overall palette is neutral, the designer reveals the interior’s inspiration was based upon the green and blue hues in a silk floral that she and the clients found during a shopping trip in Dallas. The timeless print is showcased in the living room’s draperies and chairs, and Kasler visually linked the nearby dining room by encasing its walls in a custom de Gournay wallpaper flaunting blue birds. “These clients are very sophisticated, and they really appreciate what you can bring with design,” says Kasler. CREATING ARTFUL INTERIORS is second nature for designer Beth Webb. With an early career as an art consultant, she has a keen eye for form and balance that guides the spaces she composes today. And like revisiting a favorite painting with a fresh perspective, Webb revels in returning to past projects. In the case of one Buckhead grande dame, she has had three separate opportunities across a 20-year span to work her magic. The current inhabitants purchased the property as a second home to be close to their grandchildren. “A few weeks before I got the call from them, I was riding around looking for that smaller house that’s perfect for empty nesters, which has become an anomaly here in Atlanta,” says Webb. Though it wasn’t on the market, Webb highlighted the home to her husband as they passed. “It is fabulous, has incredible bones, and lives so well,” she told him. Webb’s history with the home included not only design work, but friendships with former homeowners and a housekeeper she hired after spying the immaculately tidy fridge.

Delicate Charm
left Webb’s first client renovated the kitchen, a calming and lightfilled space. Little was changed in this, her third, update. below The pattern from the breakfast room chair cushions is repeated in the butler’s pantry and kitchen.
Her new clients’ design directive was a French aesthetic, and with the home’s inherent classicism paired with pandemic-related supply chain issues, antiques were clearly the answer. The trio shopped in Palm Beach, snatching up a chinoiserie secretary for the primary bedroom; at renowned collector Axel Vervoordt’s gallery near Antwerp, Belgium, procuring a 17th-century French glass mirror that hangs above the mantel in the salon; and across the wealth of Atlanta shops, scoring a French farm table for the husband’s desk at Parc Monceau. The storied pieces impart sophistication and patina without tipping the balance to overdone or stuffy, thanks in large part to Webb’s adherence to a tenet of comfort, essential for the multigenerational family who would gather here. “I like to sink into a sofa and for a chair to envelop you,” says Webb. She enlisted generous sofas and upholstered dining chairs in plush fabrics with refined tailoring. A large tufted ottoman in the family room is an irresistibly soft landing for adults and grandchildren alike. 69

In the Details
left A winter landscape by Willard Metcalf crowns an 18th-century Lyonnaise Regence commode. below In the powder room, a blockprint wallcovering echoes the floral motif of a circa-1880 Venetian mirror.
Webb utilized neutral hues to achieve her trademark serenity and infused soft jewel tones that harmonize with the quality of light afforded by the home’s east-west orientation. “I wanted the entire house to feel rich and warm,” says Webb. A pale sapphire motif is woven throughout—on botanical roman shades in the kitchen and a Louis XVI bergère in the primary bedroom—and a flaxen, honey hue was applied to nearly every surface of the family room. The home’s “pitch-perfect scale,” thanks to rooms that are approachable in size and a floor plan that flows effortlessly, promotes easy main-floor living for the couple. With a pool house office as the husband’s work-from-home outpost, upstairs guest rooms for out-of-town family, and an attic playroom under the eaves, it can also live large when the empty nesters’ brood touches down. Webb’s kinship with the home coupled with the homeowners’ trust in her channeled something of a design destiny. After all these years, “I think this is the way the house was meant to be,” she says. EMBRACING BEAUTY
More of this Buckhead home can be seen in Webb’s second book Embracing Beauty: Serene Spaces for Living (Rizzoli; $65), releasing in February 2025. From Brays Island to Kiawah Island and at home in Buckhead, the tome takes readers on a tour of 14 dwellings that emulate Webb’s signature storied style, plus her top tellings for creating spaces that evoke joy and serenity.

THERE’S A FINE LINE when creating a home that’s on trend but not trendy. A space outfitted with modern comforts and current styles, but that won’t be a glaringly obvious nod to old fads in a decade’s time. Andy and Shawnee Feinour’s new build in Sherwood Forest manages to toe that fine line, and beautifully so. The traditional exterior, with a blend of mid-Atlantic and country architectural influences, gives way to an interior with soothing neutrals and functional spaces designed to be lived in. “It’s a ‘today’ house,” says architect Norman Askins. “It’s a real house, for real people.” Askins and project architects Brent Mooneyham and Pan Moreau, together with designer Susan Bozeman and landscape architect Jonathan Bussell, worked to create a home that gave the Feinours the distinct spaces they each needed, balanced by airy space in between for entertaining and relaxing. With five bedrooms, two office spaces, a three-car garage, a covered porch, and a lap pool, Askins maximized every inch of the lush city lot. Shawnee, a builder by trade, was heavily involved in all aspects of the process, adding a welcome additional voice of creativity and ideation to the team. on dozens of projects over several decades, both noted how unique of an experience it was to have the client be so well-versed in the process. “It was so interesting and fun to work together with Shawnee on a home for herself,” says Bozeman. “Norman and I were able to provide options that she may have otherwise overlooked if she were building this for a client, and it ended up being a great melding of all of our creativity.” That collaboration resulted in a finished product that was more functional and intriguing than it would’ve been if any one of them had led the project alone. For instance, the butler’s pantry, “the best thing that could ever happen to a house,” according to Askins, provides a dedicated area for items that would otherwise crowd the main kitchen, but thanks to Bozeman’s touch, it also serves as a lively space washed in a pop of jewel-tone blue. “It really is a working back kitchen,” says Bozeman. “Shawnee is a cook so it provides a place for her to have all of her necessities tucked away, plus a perfect spot under the window for her to grow fresh herbs.”

Around the corner, the kitchen and living room are one large open space, delineated by the sizable island in the center. Instead of a backsplash or a statement hood, Askins and Bozeman opted for an oversize picture window behind the range. With a view of a Japanese maple tree, that last-minute design tweak makes more of a statement than any tile could. The wine room is another outcome of blended creativity. Shawnee wanted a distinct place to feature their wine collection, but she wanted it to be more accessible than a cellar hidden in a basement. Askins found the perfect spot— off the end of the dining room behind French doors. Bozeman integrated it into the space while allowing it its own character with tumbled stone on the walls and a herringbone black-tile floor. Pops of blues punctuate the otherwise neutral palette throughout the bathrooms and bedrooms, while natural elements like exposed ceiling beams and rich brown hardwoods throughout ground the flow of the whole home. “Architecturally it has very traditional roots,” says Bozeman. “But decoratively it feels a little bit more transitional with traditional aspects that keep it grounded.” The Feinours intend for this home to be their last build; their forever home. With the help of their dream design team, they’ve created a place with an aesthetic that will withstand the passing of time and trends alike. See Resources, Back of Book.

“I love Chairish because there are so many local antiques dealers represented, and you can cull through finds at any hour—then hit the shops to see pieces in person. My most purchased items are fretwork furniture, famille rose porcelain, and Italian brass trays, chairs, and umbrella stands.” chairish.com
“Be dressed and ready at least 30 minutes before your guests arrive, make yourself a drink, and relax! If the hostess is having a good time, the guests will as well.”

“ISOBEL—fabrics, wallpapers, and vintage textiles—is a brand we adore at MMI. Her innovative prints and colorways are so invigorating and fall right into our design schemes. I can’t wait to use her Budding Bulbs fabric in an upcoming project.” shopisobel.com
“Sterling silver photo frames are timeless and display your dearest memories. I love groupings of sterling frames in different sizes and styles on consoles, skirted tables, or pianos. Locally, H.G. Robertson Silver & Gifts or Fête have a wonderful selection. For ordering, Cunill is my go-to for their bamboo and heart-shaped sterling frames.” tresbellefete.com; cunillamerica.com

ABOUT the Showhouse THIS YEAR’S HOLIDAY SHOWHOUSE celebrates the past and present with a faithful redesign of the Buckhead home where legendary golfer Bobby Jones conceptualized The Masters. FIRELIGHT HOMES and TISH MILLS INTERIORS, in collaboration with KIRK DESIGN, updated the storied residence. As the story goes, the Atlanta landmark was gifted to Jones by the City of Atlanta after the golfer earned the Grand Slam in the 1930s. It was here that he collaborated on the design for Augusta National Golf Course and then founded the concept of the Masters, making it a significant project for today’s times. The classic Colonial home feels connected to the 1930s, by revitalizing legendary rooms—such as Jones’ study—and using exterior materials similar to its earlier years, with a new wing and amenities that surprise and provide a robust setting for modern lifestyles. The 7,500-square-foot residence will enthrall showhouse guests with not-to-be-missed moments both inside and out, from the new brick facade and front terrace to the pool and pool house. A sweeping driveway and mature trees lead to a graceful motor court with a three-car garage and landscaping by FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN. A new front door facing Tuxedo Road serves as the main entrance. With careful attention to the past, the original front door facing Northside Drive is being restored and 12

positioned as a back door leading to aquatic amenities and gardens (keep an eye out for nods to Augusta National). Openness prevails in the reimagined floor plan that includes a two-story grand hall and new entertaining spaces, such as a family room with a fireplace and coffered ceiling and a kitchen with a hidden scullery. The design-build team reshaped the flow while maintaining the symmetry of the living room, dining room, and historic paneled study. Surprises, such as a sexy speakeasy, infuse the redesigned property with intrigue. As part of the expansive primary suite on the first level, a spa-like bathroom dazzles with an exquisite use of steel, glass, and tilework. Throughout the home, luxurious finishes, including marble, limestone, and porcelain slab, present a play of masculine and feminine with a fresh take on the classics. An additional four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, as well as an additional laundry area, are on the second floor. The lower level is a haven for hobbies and activity with a theater, game room, gym, and wine cellar. With the design-build team capturing the magic of existing rooms and giving the property new life with in-demand spaces and amenities, and the Southeast’s top interior designers displaying their talents, the refashioned Buckhead home is poised to be a showhouse hole-in-one. —Lori Johnston

ABOUT the Beneficiary ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER
Founded in 1926, the Atlanta History Center is a 91-year-old, not-for-profit institution that seeks to connect people, history, and culture through a variety of experiences and resources. Located on 33 acres in the heart of Buckhead, the Atlanta History Center features award-winning exhibitions; the Kenan Research Center; historic houses, including the Wood Family Cabin, Smith Family Farm, and Swan House; and enchanting gardens, interactive activities and a variety of year-round adult and family programs. Over the past five years, the Atlanta History Center has been on an accelerated path to enhance the visitor experience in every way. A newly expanded atrium has transformed the Atlanta History Center’s West Paces Ferry entrance into a recognizable and inviting entrance and provided an opportunity for a new Museum Shop and Souper Jenny Café—a warm and eclectic space offering a twist on the traditional museum dining and shopping experience, fused with an independent bookstore atmosphere. And opening in fall 2018, the new Atlanta Cyclorama experience in the Lloyd and Mary Ann Whitaker Cyclorama Building will enhance the visitor experience and make this a one-stop shop for history. Each year, the History Center serves more than 50,000 school children through class field trips or classroom outreach by Atlanta History Center education staff. Visitors to the History Center get hands-on with history throughout the Atlanta History Museum, historic houses, and 22 acres of Goizueta Gardens. And everyone has the opportunity to Meet the Past every Saturday and Sunday through a variety of museum theatre performances in our new signature exhibition Gatheround: Stories of Atlanta. The Atlanta History Center’s approach to storytelling creates a special space for dialogue, discovery, and meaning that gives rise to a multidimensional, shared understanding of our city.

from the team Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is delighted to present the 16th-annual Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse benefiting the Atlanta History Center. Each year, the most esteemed design talents come together in this wintertime tradition as we celebrate the magic and warmth of the holiday season. During this year’s Showhouse, we are thrilled to celebrate our 2024 honorary chairs Don Easterling and Nina Long of Mathews Design Group, and we are also honored to partner with our beneficiary, The Atlanta History Center, to support their commitment to preserving Atlanta’s rich history. There is no better setting to do so than in this historic home that once belonged to prolific Atlanta golfer Bobby Jones.

HONORARY Chairs Don Easterling & Nina Long MATHEWS DESIGN GROUP There is something special about a holiday showhouse. Maybe it’s because there’s a little more excitement and merriment in the air; maybe it’s the moments with friends and family, parties, and all the reasons to celebrate this magical season. What better occasion than a remarkable showhouse decorated by some of the most talented designers in the South? This home is truly special and we feel so grateful to be representing the professional design community as the honorary chairs. The moment we heard this was to be the house, we just knew we had to be a part of the historically significant property. One of the things that makes Atlanta stand out is the love of historic homes and great appreciation for all things beautiful. We are overjoyed to stand side-by-side with all the wildly talented designers, along with the amazing team at AH&L, to bring everyone together with their different styles, viewpoints, and personalities to create something truly exquisite. —Don Easterling & Nina Long

ABOUT THE
Builder
Architectural Designer
Michael Clagett
Scott Kirk
Being the third-generation of his family in the building industry, Michael Clagett had his own home building company in early adulthood. He worked for another home builder during an economic downturn, but at the direct request from his client base, he and a business partner founded Firelight Homes in 2013. They started Firelight Homes with a commitment to transparent expectations regarding finish, performance, responsibility, and financial management of the home building process. The team had a mission to do home building better: to be caretakers, not just builders. Over the years, the Firelight Homes team has built both homes and relationships, creating friends for life out of clients. Clients in Rabun County, Lake Oconee, Lake Burton, Brookhaven, Sandy Springs, Buckhead, and more have chosen Firelight Homes for full transparency on the front end and an enjoyable home building process. “If it can be done, we can do it,” says Michael. “Possibilities are limitless. Every day is unique and every job is something special. We take the utmost care with our projects to ensure complete satisfaction, start-to-finish. It’s an exciting time to be building.”
“Growing up in Chicago, my dream was to be the next Frank Lloyd Wright,” says Scott Kirk. Scott’s design philosophy is to create functional art, three dimensionally expressing a client’s dreams. Applying over 35 years of commercial and residential architecture, interior architecture, and design experience, Scott designs space considering how both inside and outside work in harmony. Scott personally designs and manages each project from initial vision, throughout the design process, and to construction completion. He utilizes his artistic gift of 3D sketching and rendering to visually illustrate solutions during the design process, as well as on-site detail sketches to solve design challenges with the team. Scott’s favorite architectural quote: “God is in the details” by Mies van de Rohe, speaks to his attention to detail. His love of design and forming space results in each project being as unique as the client. Scott works in numerous vernaculars from classical to modern. When not working, Scott spends time with interior designer wife, Tish, blended family, and Trey the dog.

While Tish’s work is often centered around interiors, her work almost always includes forming space through interior architectural design, finish selection and detailing spaces, and the full construction process. Tish remains committed to designing homes infused with the perfect blend of the homeowner’s aesthetic and that particular place.
