Chief position for a magazine with which I’ve had such a long and treasured relationship! From editorial content featuring my mother’s shops in the 80s and 90s, to my own shop at The Galleries, to writing features and working with many great talents whose work has appeared in these pages, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles has been a significant part of my career, and one for which I feel enormous gratitude and loyalty. This magazine has grown and flourished under the successive leadership of Elizabeth Ralls and Clinton Smith to become one of the most respected publications in the region, and one that cultivates superb style, gracious living and is always an arbiter of good taste. Elizabeth and Clint have moved to different roles, but each established a very high bar, and I’m thrilled that they remain involved in this publication. I’m fortunate to step into this position with a roster of stellar people. From those who share this masthead with me, to the writers and photographers who tell the stories,

IT’S EASY TO MISTAKE the new Star Metals Residences (starmetalsresidences.com), the 410-key apartment community on the Westside, for a chic hotel. That’s by design, says Square Feet Studio (squarefeetstudio.com) interior designer Carolyn Balfour. “The goal was to make it feel more like a hospitality environment versus a typical multifamily [building],” she says. The team started working on the project in 2017, helping shape the amenity offerings, which include Prevail Coffee, a rooftop pool and grilling area, state-of-the-art fitness center, dog run and more. While some apartment common
28
at Colony Square
areas were once left virtually unused, the team aimed to change that by “making it a little more luxurious and comfortable,” says Balfour. Many of the firm’s multifamily clients are looking to “activate the spaces, putting emphasis on them to be welcoming, homey and more like an extension of the apartment.” The team paid homage to the building’s former life as a metal scrapyard by incorporating a mix of metals (copper, brass, nickel and stainless steel), touches of vibrant Klein blue throughout and a showstopping custom piece by Whitespace artist Sonya Yong James. The resort-style pool deck features custom RH cabana banquettes and lush live plants by Site Solutions. “The goal was to foster community, especially at a time when so many people are moving to Atlanta,” says Balfour.
Atlanta’s luxe new food hall, Politan Row, is now open at Colony Square. Designed by New Orleans-based design firm Bell Butler with an updated midcentury modern look, the hall is a feast for the senses, with Neapolitan-style pizza, to burgers and everything in between. atlanta.politanrow.com

STEPHANY DARDEN loved the Roswell home she shared with her family, but there were a few things that didn’t work. Rather than alter the abode to suit or leave the neighborhood, the family moved across the street. “We thought we would be in our house for many more years. But when the house across the street, which had more space and an unfinished basement, went up for sale, we had to take a look,” says Darden. It’s a rising trend, according to agents Molly Beery and Cia Cummings of the Beery Cummings Group with Dorsey Alston (dorseyalston.com). “We are seeing people move within the same neighborhood,” says Beery. “People get to know their neighbors and neighborhood and don’t want to leave, but their housing needs change over time.” While a move—even within the immediate area—can be a production, it might be simpler than an addition or renovation. “Renovation projects have become increasingly expensive; good labor is hard to find and living through a renovation can be time-consuming and disruptive,” says Cummings, who notes that expanded work space, pools and ground-floor bedrooms top homeowners’ wish lists. “[As a result] we are seeing the desire to move to something that accommodates their current lifestyle.”

Around town with
Naomi Von Habersham OVER THE PAST YEAR, Atlanta has welcomed many newcomers. For a variety of reasons, from financial considerations to the weather, people hailing from the Northeast to the West Coast have chosen Atlanta to be their new home. Even if they’ve only lived here a matter of weeks, they have probably already discovered that August and September can be brutally hot and humid—FYI, our weather redeems itself come winter—and that driving in the city can sometimes feel like The Fast and the Furious. But what they may not yet realize is that in Atlanta, we take our homes very seriously. To us, homes are not merely shelter. They’re like members of our families, and we lavish them with as much attention and care as we would a loved one. The first thing a newcomer might notice is that we really make a big effort to maintain the exteriors of our homes, no matter their size or location. Whether we perform the work ourselves or hire professionals, we do what it takes to make sure the lawn and landscaping are well kempt, the gutters are clean and the paint on the front of the house isn’t peeling. That’s not to say every home here is immaculate, but for the most part, we take great pride in our homes’ curb appeal. Nor do we neglect the inside of our homes. Decorating is one of our region’s favorite professions and pastimes, so a lot of time, energy and money are spent considering and selecting fabrics, furniture, curtains, lamps, artwork and everything else that makes a house a home. A pleasing environment is what we strive for, not just for our enjoyment but that of our family and friends too, which is important considering how much we entertain. Yes, we do have interests outside of the home; at this time of the year, it’s college football that commands our attention. But even though the latest “It” bag or exotic vacation may sometimes divert our attention and resources, at the end of the day, home is where our hearts are.

GLOBAL INFLUENCE Upper Westside Atlanta’s newest food hall CHATTAHOOCHEE FOOD WORKS offers authentic flavors from around the world Written by LAUREN IVERSON
Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN
ATLANTA’S MOST ANTICIPATED new food hall, Chattahoochee Food Works, is taking the upper westside by storm. Located in the Makers Building, the 22,000-square-foot space with extensive outdoor patio will be home to 31 food and artisanal goods stalls, meaning Atlantans don’t have to travel far for an authentic worldly experience. “This space feels naturally energetic and welcoming,” says owner and curator Robert Montwaid. “With so much outdoor space as well, it’s the perfect destination for both friends and families.” Indeed, guests will feel a buzz from the bustle. Knives fillet fish like a piece of art at Japanese sushi stall FLYING FISH, and BAKED KITCHEN gives South African street food—like chicken peri-peri skewers and a selection of decked out hot dogs—a playful American twist. Down the hall, TAQUERIA LA LUZ packs a punch with Mexican street fare that has no shortage of flavor. “We both saw the opportunity to go back to the simple and tasty flavors we grew up with in our home country,” says Luis Martinez-Obregon, who co-owns Taqueria La Luz and MIDTOWN’S ZOCALO with his sister, Lucero. 34

“Tacos, gorditas, huaraches—as simple as they look, they act as culinary tools and help introduce different regional flavors from all around Mexico to our guests.” In addition to diverse taste offerings, Chattahoochee Food Works has incorporated special activations like chef-driven demonstrations and artisanal market shops, such as Japanese gift shop SAKURA GIFT and floral shop SUMMER BREEZE. With so many concepts under one roof, it’s easy to assume there would be a competitive air, but James Semanisin, coowner of Italian eatery and marketplace POMODORO BELLA, says there’s nothing but support from each stall. “It’s been an incredible learning experience,” says Semanisin. “The community here has become tight. We have even teamed up with our neighbors BAKED KITCHEN to make Peri-Peri Pizza! It’s comforting to have other small-business owners as a resource.” On your way out, satisfy your sweet tooth with a handcrafted gourmet cookie from MONSTER CRAVINGS, or stop by THE BAKER DUDE’s stall for a generous selection of both savory and sweet treats. Owner Orran Booher wants customers to leave with more than just satisfied cravings, but also to share the love and happiness he brings to the hall and pours into his creations. “I feel honored, blessed and excited every single day,” says Booher. “It’s a really special place.” chattahoocheefoodworks.com THE BAKER DUDE

A LETTER FROM
SERENBE’S FOUNDER
PHOTOGRAPHED BY J ASHLEY PHOTOGRAPHY
ABOUT SERENBE Serenbe is pioneering a new community model connected to nature on the edge of Atlanta. A neighborhood with fresh food and fresh air that makes wellbeing as natural as nature itself. A community where people live, work, learn and play in celebration of life’s beauty. Where connections between people, nature and the arts are nourished. Serenbe is set among acres of preserved forests and meadows with miles of nature trails connecting homes, restaurants, arts and businesses. Serenbe’s architectural planning sets a new standard for community living and engagement by remembering the past while designing for a resilient future. Each of the neighborhoods have complementary commercial centers focused on the elements of a well-lived life: arts for inspiration, agriculture for nourishment, health for wellbeing, play for a joyful life and education for awareness. Year-round cultural events, culinary workshops and festivals, music events, films and lectures, boutique shopping, art galleries, a new wellness retreat and relaxing day spa, trail riding and more. Fresh food is another of Serenbe’s natural assets, with a 25-acre organic farm, seasonal Saturday Farmer’s Market, thriving CSA program and edible landscaping, including blueberry bushes and fig trees along paths and sidewalks. Serenbe is a place where you can come for the farmer’s market, enjoy a long weekend at the Inn or stay for a lifetime. 18
2021 SERENBE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE
SDS00_88282.40.9.indd 18
When the first residents moved to Serenbe 16 years ago, we had a master community design on paper and only a few houses built, yet I could already see what Serenbe would look like once completed. I could see how the winding country roads would connect our family’s first home in Chatt Hills—now The Inn and Farmhouse restaurant—to all the neighborhoods. I could see the varied styles of homes with welcoming porches clustered closely together among the woods and how we would preserve as much of the land as possible. I realize now that my years in hospitality running the Pleasant Peasant Group—where I brought people together over good food in beautiful spaces—informs my current work and what many now call “community placemaking.” Food and hospitality have been at the forefront of everything I do—our country home eventually became an Inn, and we offered guests dinner then fried chicken lunches that turned into The Farmhouse restaurant. Growing fresh local food is an integral part of the vision. “Agrihood” wasn’t a term when we planned an organic farm in the community, but we believed in farmers and connecting people to the natural food systems. We even integrated edible and medicinal landscapes into the neighborhoods so you’ll find blueberry bushes at the crosswalks. You may know us for our extensive cultural events, staying at The Inn, dining at one of our restaurants or maybe you’ve read about us in a magazine or newspaper or listened to our podcast, Serenbe Stories. The years we’ve spent in this community have flown by, but underneath the beauty of Serenbe there is deep substance and larger purpose. We have created a model of how to build with nature rather than against it. Our purpose is to develop in balance with the planet by connecting people with nature. We do that in many ways but it starts with our respect for the land, the climate and our neighbors. The buildings and the sidewalks, the sustainable practices, the preserved nature trails are all important features that form the foundation for this place we call Serenbe. The people and personal connections energize those spaces making this a special place where waving to neighbors and strangers alike is commonplace. People tell me to be touched by Serenbe is to be changed forever. But I know it’s the collective spirit of the people who make Serenbe a true community. You, our residents and visitors, inspire me to do more.

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY
THE ARTS AT SERENBE
THE ART FARM AT SERENBE
Serenbe is a community that passionately explores, embraces and expands the connections between nature, culture and the art of living. Multiple arts programs at Serenbe have been built out of intention and have grown organically over the years. The Art Farm is the central platform and place for cultivating artists and the arts through residencies, workshops, studios and has been a literal platform for dinners, performances and artist celebrations.
In a typical year, the Art Farm at Serenbe hosts 50+ public programs, including it’s signature series, Art Over Dinner. Prior to the pandemic, gallery exhibitions at Gainey Hall, art classes, corporate workshops and more also filled our roster with the goal to bring back a full slate in 2022. The Art Farm is located across the street from the Serenbe community and provides an opportunity to bring people together in support of the arts, with the belief that art in everyday life can create a greater understanding of the world.
Also located at the Art Farm are artist residency cottages designed by the award winning Rural Studio architecture program. These cottages promote the creative process by providing artists of the highest caliber uninterrupted time and space and a welcoming community in which to create. Hundreds of artists have stayed in and been supported by the artist residencies over the years. You’ll also find art in the meadows of Serenbe where ballets and plays have been performed, films are shown and the Atlanta Symphony honored us during the pandemic with a safely distanced two nights of magical performances in 2020. Serenbe is also a platform and forum for dialogue providing cultural presentations, workshops and seminars for residents, neighbors and visitors to interact with cultural and environmental thought leaders and eminent scholars. Arts, culture and classes happen all over the neighborhood—from the trails to galleries including a co-op space featuring over 40 artists members from Serenbe and the greater community. Art classes can also be taken, offering private and group fine art classes located in a Grange art studio.
This growing 40-acre Art Farm complex serves as a place for artists, the arts and culture and provides a physical space to ignite passion and imagination in nature and works in collaboration with the greater community and beyond along with national and international partners to amplify their work and makers. ART OVER DINNER Art Over Dinner is a series of gatherings with artists and the organizations that support their work. We collaborate with chefs and farmers to create a seasonal meal that showcases winemakers and brewers, and invite our guest artists to spark the conversation in an intimate setting. We have one dinner planned this fall with a full series coming in 2022. GAINEY HALL GALLERY SHOWS Curated art exhibitions in Gainey Hall, an Inn at Serenbe event space, rotating every 6-8 weeks. Artists featured are Serenbe residents and regional artists, emerging and established. Gainey Hall as a venue provides artists with a rich, diverse audience of visitors, corporate event guests, neighbors and residents. Proceeds from artwork sales support local artists and the Art Farm. Note: During the pandemic, the Acton School enrollment grew so much that classes expanded into Gainy Hall. Gallery shows will return once Acton has finished their new school building.

Pool Lounge and Bar A space for relaxing and entertaining, the pool lounge and bar were designed to offer luxurious creature comforts yet blend in with their outdoor surroundings. Folding steel doors on both sides of the lounge provide unobstructed views and easy access to the adjoining pool while also allowing sunlight to stream in. Venetian plaster, used on both walls and the barrel ceiling, amplifies the light, as does the pale-colored upholstered furniture, whose carefree 1960s vibe encourages all manner of relaxation. Casual and sophisticated, the space also boasts an Art Deco-patterned marble floor, striking art and a fireplace, but its most unique feature is a bar located at one end of the space. Separated by a steel-and-glass wall yet accessible thanks to its folding windows, the bar allows guests to enjoy cocktails or even a light breakfast while admiring one more indoor nod to the great outdoors: a floor-toceiling mural of trees. —Jennifer Boles

Pool and Rear Patio An L-shaped rear courtyard with pool, cabana
and pool lounge with sliding glass doors allowed this residence to take full advantage of today’s desire for indoor-outdoor living and entertaining. Blurring the lines between indoor design and outdoor performance is a mission close to the heart of Lillian August of Lillian August Furnishings + Design, which she executed masterfully in collaboration with Sherrill Furniture in an awe-inspiring pebble covered courtyard, complete with outdoor-friendly upholstered furniture, and a pool cabana that boasts all the interior comforts of home. “I wanted to show the capabilities that function, form and design have between upholstery and case goods,” shared August about her outdoor collection with Hickory White, featuring such considered furniture designs— like the covered alfresco dining table in the I-can’t-believe-we’re-outside pool cabana—that they appear to be plucked from the interior. As a revered furniture designer, August continues to transform exterior gathering spaces like this one into true extensions of their interior counterparts. “By pairing luxe outdoor textiles with mixed, organic materials, I transformed the outdoor area into a tranquil oasis centered around luxurious lifestyle and comfort.”

Dining Room Designed with avid entertaining in mind, the dining room is the essence of gracious hospitality, no matter the occasion. The room’s tone is set by its variegated grasscloth wallpaper, whose sophisticated shades of green are repeated throughout the space, including the verdigris-colored dining table and a set of framed botanicals, and whose abstract pattern lends the space a modern sensibility, one which is echoed in a midcentury French buffet. During the day, reflective accents, such as a pair of antique gilt wood consoles, a burnished mirror and a bronze and crystal chandelier, bring warmth to their verdant surroundings, but at night, they shimmer and glow, especially when the room is bathed in candlelight. Perhaps the most inviting feature of the room is a set of Mr. and Mrs. Howard for Sherill Furniture klismos-style dining chairs, whose designed-forcomfort shape encourages guests to linger at the dining table. —Jennifer Boles 83

BUTLER’S PANTRY BY DAVID CHRISTENSEN

Kitchen and Butler’s Pantry Natalia Makarova delighted in the architectural elements and the underused rust hue in the marble backsplash and countertops. “I think rust is so much fun,” she says. “Mother Nature did such an amazing job on that.” Makarova sought to preserve the light and openness from the arched window and soft gray tiles for the walls and barrel vault ceiling. “It almost felt like you were in a cloud, especially with reflections from the pool,” she says. The bold shapes, beginning with the custom iron screen delineating the butler’s pantry, are paired with hidden, quiet elements that reflect her linear, minimalistic aesthetic. Paneled appliances and a bifold pocket door convey clean functionality. The custom brass hardware and island design showcase subtle curves, and the Apparatus pendants appear as glowing bowls. Rusty caramel tones in the calacatta macchia vecchia veer from more pristine marbles, Makarova says, adding that the full-height backsplash pairs perfectly with the walnut veneer cabinetry. The same bookmatched cabinetry under the butler’s pantry window creates a seamless transition between rooms. A sliding system with reeded details imitates a paneled wall to elevate the views from the foyer. —Lori Johnston 85

Breakfast Nook and Pantry Recessed in a niche, the custom walnut table and banquette intentionally lay low to capture the interest at eye level in the breakfast nook. The banquette, inspired by Parisian bistros, is upholstered in a wool and alpaca blend from the Holly Hunt Great Plains collection. Designer Natalia Makarova says she purposely designed the table in what some may call an odd shape to serve as a contrast to the kitchen’s curves, and offset it from the banquette to provide a comfortable spot for reading or phone calls. For warmth and cohesiveness, she used the same walnut as the kitchen cabinetry for the dining table and side table. Sequoia poufs from Habachy Designs + Atelier, covered in cozy sheepskin, join wood cane chairs and counter stools in rust at the island. Nearby, the pantry’s full-size wine fridge offers ample storage space, making entertaining a breeze. —Lori Johnston 87

phisticated, French-accented welcome. Conceived for a stylish female Francophile, the space is polished, with its muted French oak flooring and pale walls allowing first-rate decorations to command attention. Antiques, including an Empire-style armchair, a pair of silvered candlesticks and architectural crown fragments, enliven the space alongside a pair of statuesque wooden pedestals. Built to dramatically display a pair of patinated copper urns, the grooved pedestals were designed to emulate the Art Deco flair of the surrounding architectural molding. A vibrant yellow cotton-and-silk curtain panel, which softens the transition between the foyer and the salon, is the one bright note in an otherwise quiet space. Inspired by a photo of a billowing yellow drop cloth hanging in an Indian mosque, the curtain is also evocative of French fashion, calling to mind a haute couture creation. —Jennifer Boles

Salon One of the larger rooms in the house, the salon takes its cue from its architectural shell. Venetian plaster walls and a grey marble fireplace inspired the salon’s neutral gray-and-white color palette, which is both coolly sophisticated and warmly inviting, while the room’s architectural simplicity gave Brown the freedom to introduce furniture in an array of captivating shapes and materials. A steel bench, acrylic objects and a round table with a base that resembles a piece of abstract sculpture are just some of the room’s many intriguing pieces, which altogether give the space a collected, refined character. Comfort is also in abundance thanks in part to the salon’s impressive size, which accommodates a multitude of upholstered pieces, including a 120-inch-long sofa. Add the room’s panoramic view of the pool to the already impressive mix, and the salon becomes an incomparable spot in which to relax or entertain. —Jennifer Boles 90

Paneled Study With a striking photograph of a woman as its focal point, the
study is a blend of design styles, materials and objects that pay tribute to this captivating portrait. Inspired by the woman’s modern yet timeless appearance, Ray selected both contemporary pieces with interesting shapes, including a sloped sofa and asymmetrical cocktail table, and more traditional furnishings, such as an antique gilt wood mirror. The room’s color palette was also chosen with the painting in mind. Champagne hues, brass tones and, most pronounced, dusty blues are evident throughout the space, particularly at the room’s corners, where moody blue wraparound drapery both softens the paneled walls and creates a sense of intimacy within the space. The study’s crowning object, in more ways than one, is a shimmering crystal chandelier, which not only tops off the room but also appears to rest crownlike above the head of the photographed woman. —Jennifer Boles

Primary Bedroom A tribute to designer Jason Arnold’s favorite city,
Paris, the primary bedroom represents an urbane approach to bedroom design, one which is reminiscent of Parisian hotels. An olive green wool rug, which was the first piece chosen for the room, determined the space’s moody color palette, whose rich, saturated tones include blues with accents of black. Additionally, textured materials with a soft hand, such as the cadet-blue worsted wool draperies, envelop their surroundings in quiet luxury. The designer’s appreciation for Classical architecture prompted the room’s main attraction: a pedestal-style bed covered in black-and-white striped fabric, which was repeated for the bedding. Other nods to Classicism include a pair of black, Greek key-embellished klismos chairs, a pair of antique decorative columns and a plaster bust. Additional enduring designs, such as a wingback chair, demilune table, a small campaign chest and even a Noguchi paper lantern, further contribute to the room’s civilized manner. —Jennifer Boles 95

Primary Bath Sensational curves and skylights are hallmarks of the innovative
primary bath that began with inspiration from an Italian rug, says designer Cydney Mitchell. “It has a play on the all-around feel of the [Art Deco] architecture,” she says. SOURCE’s take on Art Deco design resulted in a stunning shower backsplash in light tones of honed bianco dolomiti, calacatta gold and grigio onyx. Skylights illuminate the artistic backsplash focal point, answer a lighting challenge in the one-window space and anchor designated his-and-hers showers. The bath presented a series of firsts for the designers, with a particular focus on attention to scale. Raising the sweeping shower on a platform makes it feel like its own special space, Mitchell says, yet it remains connected to elements such as the fluted tub designed by SOURCE and provided by MTI, which takes center stage against a glass wall. The archway and vanity mirrors echo the backsplash’s rounded design, and the same shower tile is used on the floor. Brass fixtures, banding around the mirrors and a circle motif add layers into the splendid bathroom. —Lori Johnston

the master suite’s distinct his-and-her closets by Cydney Mitchell and Brittany Stafford of SOURCE. “Her” closet, accessed through the bathroom archway, is a peaceful respite resplendent in green, where lotus flowers float around and rise above an oval window. An Art Nouveau wall that Mitchell saw inspired the hand-painted floral wallpaper around the closet’s singular window. Fabric cabinetry panels and carpet, both in subtle shades of green, soften the space in lieu of draperies. The layout accommodates a custom desk and island, flanked by cabinetry with hardware from Italian company Jesse. In the “his” closet—accessed from the bedroom—the designers planned early on for LED strip lighting in the custom dark wood cabinets to keep the focal point on the clothes, while smoked mirrors accentuate the drama. —Lori Johnston

Bedroom and Bathroom For Kati Hardwick of B.D. Jeffries, her awe-inspiring bedroom design started with a 19th-century Belgian daybed. “It was my first inspiration for the space. I loved the color and femininity of the carvings but also its masculine feel and chunky stature,” shares Hardwick, who knew this standout piece, which was originally a bench, belonged in front of a large window to curl up, read a page-turner and watch the day go by. Hardwick continued a nuanced neutral palette throughout the calm, cool and collected bedroom and bathroom, layering distinctive textures, natural woods plus soft and cozy textiles. “The room had so much natural light so I kept everything light, bright and airy, with a touch of whimsy,” says Hardwick. —Jeanne Lyons Davis 100

Bedroom and Bathroom After an inspiring trip to France, designer Amy
Newell of Charles Interiors was captivated by the je ne sais quoi of the country, bringing its nuances and inherent charms to the bedroom and adjoining bathroom. “It’s an eclectic nod to the French Art Deco movement,” shares Newell, noting the antique furniture, distinctive rug and heirlooms throughout the storied space. The unique bed and its corresponding textiles transport houseguests to another time, evoking the feeling of travel with all the comforts of home. The past is weaved throughout the room, including in the skirt above the desk crafted with quilling, an artform that’s centuries old and adds to the space’s sense of history. To boot, each panel on the valence above the bed has a different scene, creating a beautiful, unique narrative that’s practically plucked from the storybooks. “The chaise, bed, bedding and overall bed treatment, along with the fabrics used, subtly reminds the houseguest of being somewhere different and cultured,” says Newell. “The feeling of inviting, comfortable travel surrounds them in this space.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Playroom and Laundry Room Bright, vibrant and unexpected touches are
threaded throughout this reimagined playroom, masterfully designed by Chris Holt of Holt Interiors. He described the charming, multipurpose space as the antithesis of the basement. “It’s more of a sophisticated young adult hangout—the hub of the second floor that connects to the upstairs bedrooms—than a typical playroom overflowing with primary colored toys,” shares Holt. “That said, vivid pillows, diverse art and casual seagrass matting keep the space feeling youthful.” In the adjacent laundry room, another hardworking yet commonly overlooked space, Holt selected a graphic black-and-white wallpaper with a cheeky nod to ink stains to bring some life to the otherwise utilitarian space. His last touch of whimsy? Practical pop art. “I stacked vibrant Tide detergent boxes for a Warhol-style pop of color that was both fun and functional,” says Holt. —Jeanne Lyons Davis 105

Bedroom and Bathroom Since working for the lauded firm
James Michael Howard, designer Nellie Jane Ossi has always revered its principal designer, Phoebe Howard, whom she also calls mom. So she went to the archives and channeled a pink bedroom her mother designed for her first showhouse. “It has become such an iconic room of hers that many still refer to and love (including myself!),” says Ossi, who designed a modern spin on that classic bedroom. The anchor of the space is a Jane Churchill fabric that Ossi has adored for years: “I said to myself, when I do my first showhouse, I will use this fabric!” She leaned into the Art Deco design of the fabric with scallop details on the drapery, which complements the eye-catching tile in a similar color in the adjoining bathroom. She searched high and low for the perfect chair to complement the feminine sensibility of the space, discovering a unique curved chaise that was a perfect addition to the room. The cherry on top: covering the chaise with faux fur. “It’s a perfect spot to relax, recline and embrace your inner Jean Harlow.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Bedroom and Bathroom When it comes to designing nurseries, a niche Michele Johnson has made a name for herself in, she likes to think outside the box. “I call this room ‘Grande Crèche,’ which is French for a nursery for your grands,” says Johnson about this sophisticated reimagining of a traditional nursery. The multilayered space, which includes a well-appointed closet complete with a graphic Louee Vega wallpaper, ballerina bar and—wait for it—a disco ball, possesses a chic, vibrant and youthful sensibility, sprinkled with elegant yet playful decor that’s coveted by both the young and young at heart. The Louee Vega bedroom wallcovering looks equal parts feminine and cool as it marries pastels and earth tones, while a streamlined sofa is the perfect spot to perch while watching children play. “I imagine a grandmother lounging here while wearing a fabulous gown and watching her littles play or color in an Andy Warhol coloring book.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis 109

Wellington’s Southeastern Designer Showhouse debut juxtaposes Art Deco with the modern age. Stephanie Abernathy and Ashley Malone sought to use materials that evoke the great designers with functional sophistication for today. “Our inspiration is genuinely derived from some true historical example,” says Abernathy. They thought of French designer Jean-Michel Frank upon seeing the zellige-inspired teal ceramic tile planned for the laundry walls and ceiling. Color-blocked cabinetry and a roman shade in Schumacher velvet play off the matte blue-greens. The shagreen wallcovering from Cowtan & Tout feels like an updated take on something Frank would have used, but in vinyl for the office area. Above the custom oak desk and lacquered Spanish Revival chair, a green mohair cornice punctuates with Gatsbyesque glam. In the bath, a cork wallcovering is elegant and durable. For the rear-entry gallery, acrylic frames and black chains connecting a magnolia triptych in charcoal by Emily Farish present a contemporary take on European salon style. Adds Malone: “We want our spaces to feel like they have existed and will continue to exist.” —Lori Johnston

Media Room After an unprecedented year of rethinking the
way we use our homes, Bailey Ward wanted to give the beloved but often overlooked basement media room the elevated attention it deserved. “After seeing the space and the rounded niche, I kept coming back to images of The Orangery Building at Versailles, with its beautiful barrel vault ceiling and the thousands of green citrus trees housed within it,” says Ward. Inspired by those rich green hues in the iconic landmark, she incorporated the color into the rollback velvet sofa, with subtle curves that nod to architectural nuances of the space. Ward sprinkled hints of glamour in the cozy hangout, from the welcoming colors of the fabrics to the geometric design of the rug. “Since people are spending much more time at home, I was so inspired to create a more formal, but also fun and fresh take on your typical basement.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis 113

Basement Bar, Lounge and Game Room Designers
Cydney Mitchell and Brittany Stafford envisioned a “very moody parlor” in their basement spaces. Dark Venetian plaster walls and stained oak cabinets, brass finishes, Andy Warhol portraits and graphic shapes in black and cream offer a transitional approach to the look of a polo room. The designers created various seating areas and spaces with views of the golf simulator, pool and shuffleboard tables from Venture Game Tables and a TV hidden behind the smoky bar mirror. The home’s main hue reenters via the verde green galaxy granite countertops and roman shades in artichoke. The round dining table with slim brass banding, a set of four shapely vintage chairs and the Circa Lighting fixtures further link to the architecture and SOURCE’s interior specifications and selections throughout the house. Says Mitchell: “It actually all really did come out the way that we envisioned it, every room.” —Lori Johnston 115

Design/Build/Landscape The design-build-landscape team
collaborated on a purposeful, livable, soulful plan for Tuxedo at the Park. The new 8,000-square-foot residence, across from Chastain Park, enchants with its French Regency architecture and ode to Art Deco. “The curation of this house is just incredible in terms of the sense of style,” says developer Stan Benecki. Venetian plaster walls, French oak floors and intricate tile and ceiling details imbue exquisite craftsmanship with timeless appeal. The five-bedroom home, with five full baths, two powder rooms and a finished basement, further invites relaxation with a pool, pool
lounge, courtyards and a rear porch. For instant privacy, Nellie Stevens Hollies line the rear of the pool, where confederate jasmine is espaliered on the wall. Compacted crushed stone lends a European feel to the courtyard, where ‘Winter King’ hawthorn trees will provide a canopy. Synthetic turf is used at the pool and a sunken side courtyard. “People want their outdoor spaces to feel and appear as beautiful and functional as their indoor spaces,” says Alec G. Michaelides with Land Plus. “That means the level of detail to create these outdoor spaces has been elevated even more.” —Lori Johnston

END NOTE IN LOVE WITH...
Brown & White
is a palette that is both rich and romantic, as well as soothing and enveloping. While black and white can sometimes be too harsh or high contrast, brown and white has a softness and warmth to it. With personal accents and flourishes, it is ideally balanced to appeal to both masculine and feminine sensibilities, and is a perfect backdrop for mixing both traditional and contemporary furnishings in a room.
