Our Mission

2009-10 BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Our new century needs and will be shaped by extraordinary individuals. Meeting the challenges and opportunities of an interdependent world will require versatile intellectual competence and uncompromising commitment. Those who thrive in and contribute to this world will have a solid sense of who they are and respect for who others are, as individuals, as members of a group, as citizens of their nation, and as members of a global community. They will have a rigorous academic preparation and a passion to become the best they can be and to help others achieve their best. The mission of Atlanta International School is to develop such individuals.

Larry Mock, Treasurer

TO FULFILL THIS MISSION, WE ENVISION ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

• continuing to develop and deserve a worldwide reputation as an exemplary center of teaching and learning, a school that achieves and sets, within the framework of the International Baccalaureate, world-class standards in bilingual education, promotes international understanding, develops the whole child, and lives its core values of respect, diversity, effort and joy of learning; • maintaining an optimal size and composition of faculty and students so that opportunities for individual learning, mutual under- standing, and community feeling are maximized; • connecting to the local and global community through the active participation of its multilingual students, alumni and staff, who, in their work and further education, help to shape and improve the world through their knowledge, understanding and hope. WHAT WE BELIEVE IS IMPORTANT

We believe in the intrinsic joy of learning and hope, sustained and nurtured in a diverse school community, united in its commitment to mutual respect and purposeful effort to set and achieve high standards. THE JOY OF LEARNING AND HOPE

Just as a child experiences joy at the growth of his or her physical powers, we believe our students can experience the same joy in the growth of their intellectual powers. At AIS we strive to create an environment ideally suited to promote the growth of mind: rich in intellectual stimulation and promoting the same sense of wonder, curiosity, and motivation for exploration that we all had in our first years of life. We cultivate a spirited sense of hope in human potential and in our future. A DIVERSE COMMUNITY

We believe that a cohesive community of students and faculty from a variety of backgrounds — socio-economic, ethnic, linguistic, national and religious — is a particularly rich culture for growing both the mind and the heart of each individual student. This diversity best prepares the student for life-long learning in a diverse, interdependent world.

DEVELOPMENT OFFICE COMMITTED TO MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND RESPECT

We believe that every human being is valuable and deserves respect. We further believe that understanding others promotes and solidifies respect, and that the best way to understand others is by learning to adopt different perspectives and to see the world from another’s point of view. Since each language reflects the values, history, and way of thinking for those who speak it, learning another language is a particularly effective means of understanding others, and speaking that language is a powerful statement of respect for them. AND TO PURPOSEFUL EFFORT

We hold high expectations for every student to be successful and believe that achievement comes from sustained and purposeful effort. We believe that our potential is developed and value is added to our lives and the lives of others by pushing our limits. Ours is a community that rewards and celebrates the disciplined intelligence — in all the ways that intelligence can be defined.

Without any doubt, AIS is an excellent school which has set, from the outset, a hugely ambitious mission for itself. – Council of International Schools’ Visiting Team Report

They (AIS students) are joyful and purposeful across the board. One student said to me,‘I love this school!’ It feels like a new adventure every day!’ You have... an incredible, articulate, intelligent and joyful group of students at all levels

– Chairman of the Visiting Team, SACS/AdvancED

Letter from the Chair and Headmaster Dear AIS Community: These words from the visiting teams of the Council of International Schools and SACS/AdvancEd marked the successful conclusion of a two-year marathon that engaged our school and community in a great deal of hard work and reflection. Our entire community shares in the resulting honor and accomplishment of reaccreditation for five years by SACS/AdvancEd and ten years by CIS. We were also pleased that AIS was the first full-day school in Georgia ever to be awarded the PASCH designation, indicating a partner school of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Federal Republic of Germany). These accomplishments were among the many highlights of the 2009-2010 school year. As trying economic times continued during last year, maintaining healthy application and enrollment numbers was a top priority. Financial aid monies were critical to maintaining enrollment, and the school once again made awards at a record level. Approximately 20% of our students received some form of financial aid during the 09-10 school year, with an average award of $9,267. More of the school’s statistics for 2009-2010 can be found in the “AIS Report Card” on page 17 of this report. We continue to be grateful to all who have supported AIS with their generous contributions and helped make it possible to celebrate these great successes. The Annual Fund surpassed its goal and parent participation increased by 20% from the previous year. The faculty, staff and Board of Trustees supported the Annual Fund with 100% participation. We also welcomed the support from alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends who continue to remember AIS. The See Beyond capital campaign, launched in the fall of 2008, concluded, raising over $16M. Some of the campus improvements financed by the campaign were ready for use at the beginning of the school year, including our state-of-the-art, upgraded athletics field; new lighting and bleachers; improved parking, carpools and traffic flow; and more green spaces. Work on the ASD project continued during the school year in preparation for opening in August 2010. The ASD will benefit our students across primary, middle and upper schools while helping AIS take our programs in science, design, technology and art to new levels. In addition, a fabulous auditorium restoration project – completed with anonymous donor contributions – resulted in reclaimed balcony seating and a truly beautiful meeting space for our school. Atlanta International School benefits greatly from the leadership of an exceptionally talented and utterly committed group of people. We would like to extend our most heartfelt appreciation to three trustees who retired from our AIS Board over the summer, all after nine years of dedicated volunteer service to our Board and our community: John Porter, Eleanor Ratchford and Gerry Hull, who has been elected to Trustee Emeritus on our Board.

Alan Colberg Chair of the Board of Trustees

We were also pleased to welcome eight new Board members during 2010. In adding these new members, we primarily focused on deepening the international diversity of our Board and adding expertise in the areas of finance and buildings and grounds. Our new members are: Charlie Bostwick Wendie Hayler

Beth Kytle ’98 Dennis Lockhart

Trish Marcucci Cecile Noziere

Kevin O’Halloran Benny Varzi

The commendations and recommendations from both the CIS and SACS/AdvancEd visiting teams provide a very useful starting point for developing our AIS Strategic Plan 2011-2015. Their findings also confirm that we make daily progress towards our goal of being both a benchmark for excellence in international education as well as a great Atlanta school. We thank you, the AIS community, for the many ways you tirelessly support and contribute to this effort. Sincerely, Kevin Glass Headmaster

See Beyond Capital Campaign Leadership Gifts (Gifts above $10,000)

The Campaign for Atlanta International School Thanks to the generosity of the AIS community, we are proud to announce that, during the 2009-2010 school year, we concluded our very successful $16M+ See Beyond campaign. The campaign included the funding of a three-storied, 32,000 square-foot Adair Art, Science and Design Center, as well as a new 100,000 square-foot sports field, refurbished bleachers, improvements to our IT program, and other major improvements to the school’s infrastructure, such as 100 added parking spaces and an additional carpool drop-off point. The Adair Art, Science and Design Center serves students in grades 6 to 12, providing them with unlimited opportunities to connect the disciplines of art, design technology and science. Our science facilities now include two labs for both physics and chemistry, three biology labs and a senior project lab, as well as a lower-level greenhouse and an area for robotics. Art classes are held in an airy open loft space with abundant natural light on the third floor. We have begun to take advantage of distance learning initiatives to partner with other IB schools so that AIS students can work with peers across the globe. The ASD has already begun to play an integral part of campus life, promoting conversations between academic disciplines and acting as a whole-school gathering space.

The additional classroom space freed up by the ASD Center has provided our Primary School with room for a dedicated Upper Primary science lab, two dedicated art classrooms, as well as has allowed our Secondary social sciences to move from our portal classrooms. IT infrastructure upgrades associated with bringing the ASD Center online has actually allowed the entire campus to be wireless throughout and increase our broadband capacity.

Apogee SSO Tax Credit Donors Georgia Private School Tax Credit The Georgia Private School Tax Credit was passed into law in the summer of 2008. AIS is excited about the law as it has financial benefits for both you and our school. The state has set aside $50 million in credits available each year, distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. By redirecting a portion of your Georgia income taxes you can provide scholarship assistance to incoming AIS students that are currently enrolled in public school. You will receive a tax credit at the state level, against your Georgia income tax liability for amounts donated. For married couples filing a joint return, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual). We have partnered with Apogee Georgia School Choice Scholarship Fund, a state approved Student Scholarship Organization (SSO), to enable the AIS community to take advantage of this program. With a donation to the Apogee Georgia School Choice Scholarship Fund, a Georgia state income tax credit is available to you for the tax year the donation is made. Thank you to the following individuals who made contributions in 2009 to Apogee, to benefit Atlanta International School: Dr. Mark F. Baucom & Dr. Anne Baucom Mr. & Mrs. Jeffrey B. Clark, Jr. Mr. Roy Plaut & Mrs. Olga Gomez Plaut Dr. John G. Porter & Dr. Lucy Axtell Mr. & Mrs. John P. Richard 10 2009-2010 annual report

Organizational Donors With sincere appreciation, we recognize those businesses, foundations and community organizations that provide financial support, in-kind donations and event sponsorship to Atlanta International School. Our school directly benefits from the generous support of our corporate donors.

Atlanta International School Class of 2010

Legacy Gift AIS Annual Giving 2009-2010 Thank you to the Class of 2010 for its enthusiastic support of two Legacy Gift projects. The first, the Educational Advancement Legacy Scholarship, is a scholarship that awards one distinctly talented member of the junior class the opportunity to pursue an academic or artistic summer program before their senior year. This year, recipient Parisa Frost pursued her love of journalism with a two-week program in Romania. The second Legacy Gift, the eagle mascot costume, has already generated a great deal of excitement at this year’s school and sports events. The AIS Student Council keeps the mascot, whose identity remains anonymous, on a busy schedule of appearances at carpool, student meetings, soccer and basketball games and pep rallies. Our students continue to benefit from the legacies left by the Class of 2010, both in academics and school spirit.

The night was kicked off with an a cappella version of La Marseillaise, the national anthem of France. Remarks by Headmaster Kevin Glass, Board of Trustees Chair Alan Colberg, and Spring Benefit Chair Lynn-Anne Huck were followed by dancing and music by US Beat. Honorary Chairs Mrs. Anne Cox Chambers and Mr. Gerry Hull were honored at the event with a special gift from the school.

Parent Organization Report By Carrie Doyle, 2009/2010 PO President

This was a year of excitement and change, and our parent volunteers dove into the fray with spirit and enthusiasm to support and celebrate our unique community. Countless volunteers gave unselfishly of their time, whether it was to chair a committee, to offer support in the classroom or to donate resources and time to the myriad of activities undertaken by our students, faculty and families. I was inspired by the many ways in which I saw individuals, families, faculty, staff and administration working together to show their commitment to this wonderful school. As a Parent Organization, our main goal was to support our new Headmaster and work in partnership with the school to meet the year’s challenges. We supported the school with the launch of its new website, embracing it as our main form of communication and helping our families appreciate its benefits. We supported the school’s marketing and recruitment efforts by assisting with events for prospective families. We provided volunteers for the interview process during both of the school’s reaccreditations visits. And, as always, our PO Reps and Room Parents supported our faculty and students at the classroom level on many special projects, celebrations and initiatives throughout the year. We embraced every opportunity to celebrate the many cultures of the AIS community. Parent volunteers worked tirelessly to bring the gift of culture and tradition to our families and to the wider community through our PO Signature Cultural Events: Worldfest, Christmas Market, Asian New Year, Jazz in Black and White, La Kermesse, Arts Alliance Event and many others. Exotic foods, music, games and dances were just some of the highlights of these wonderful celebrations. Last year the PO established the Cultural Enrichment Fund with the proceeds from its last two Worldfest events. This year, we added three more funds: the Program Support Fund, the Student Support Fund and the Facilities/ Capital Fund. The funds were created to give faculty and staff greater flexibility and access to PO donations throughout the year. Any profits from PO events as well as excess funds from operations may be deposited into theses funds each year. We added a new committee to the Parent Organization Council this year. The Sustainability and Health Committee was formed to promote sustainable and healthy lifestyles in our community by raising awareness about health and sustainability topics and by collaborating with faculty to provide IB-relevant educational experiences for our students. The committee helped to establish the AIS Garden, a space that will be a learning and living tool for students and families for years to come. And last, but not least, the PO dedicated many hours this year to clarifying, documenting and updating the policies and procedures that govern its operations. Our PO Bylaws were updated, new guidelines were added, existing guidelines were revised and all documents posted clearly on the PO website. It is our hope that this documentation will provide guidance to our PO volunteers and committee members in carrying out their roles. I continually feel blessed to be a part of this community, and I feel fortunate to have worked with such a gifted and committed group of volunteers. Their spirit and love for the school is boundless.
