One School Two Welcoming Campuses
One Mission
The mission at Atlanta International School is to develop courageous leaders who shape their world for the better.
Core Values
At our core is creating a joy of learning and purposeful effort, and mutual respect and understanding, in an inclusive and intercultural community.
Different by Design
Atlanta International School opened its doors to students in 1985. The school was the vision of local families and leaders who wanted a different sort of private school in Atlanta; one where a global mindset, language, and intercultural understanding would be centered in the pursuit of academic excellence.
These principles are still the heart of AIS today.
Discover AIS
Students come to AIS from all over the world, the US, and the Atlanta area. They have one thing in common. They are young people who will become courageous leaders, ready to shape their world for the better.
The AIS community represents 90 nationalities and more than 60 languages. This wonderful intercultural and inclusive environment creates a very special energy. It is a place where all students and their families belong.
Every student at AIS is offered the full International Baccalaureate curriculum, from 3K to Grade 12, and the opportunity to learn at least one language in addition to their own.
Primary School (3K - Grade 5) is located on our Buckhead Campus and is a Day program.
Middle School (Grades 6 - 8) is also located on the Buckhead Campus and is a Day program.
High School students in Grades 9 - 12 (this is also called Upper School at AIS) can choose Day School on either our Buckhead or Sandy Springs Campus.
AIS Boarding School is for Grades 9 - 12 and is located at Sandy Springs.

Primary School (PS)
Our Primary School has three parts:
The Early Learning Center. Students in 3K & 4K learn in spaces designed to enhance a ‘whole child’ experience. With indoor and outdoor classrooms, students’ days are immersed in one of four language programs; Chinese, French, German or Spanish.
In 5K, students move to the Primary Learning Center, a bespoke building that opened in 2018. The PLC houses both Lower Primary (5K - Grade 2) and Upper Primary (Grade 3 - 5).
All Primary School students enjoy the school Library and Sports and Activity Center, as well as the many outdoor facilities, such as the running track.
Secondary School (SS)
Secondary School, is for Grades 6 - 12. Middle School (Grades 6 - 8) happens on the Buckhead Campus in the historic Main Building, the modern Arts, Science and Design building, the Sports and Activity Center and in the many outdoor spaces.
Upper School (the AIS name for High School) is Grades 9 - 12, either in Buckhead or Sandy Springs - with a choice of Day or Boarding.
The International Baccalaureate (IB)
At many schools, only a small number of students are selected to study the IB. At AIS, the IB is offered to everyone.
The AIS IB curriculum is the Primary Years (3KGrade 5), Middle Years (Grades 6 - 10), Diploma (Grades 11 - 12) and Career-related Programs (Grades 11 - 12).
Each builds upon the other, developing inquisitive, knowledgeable, and caring young people who are motivated to succeed and make a difference in the world.
Atlanta International School is one of the very few schools in the United States offering the full IB continuum to all students - for both Day and Boarding.
Primary Years Program (PYP)
Through the PYP, we develop critical thinkers from a young age. Students become globally-minded, able to think conceptually to solve complex problems - and to do so collaboratively, with classmates and friends from different cultures and world views.
Middle Years Program (MYP)
The MYP fosters creative, critical, and reflective thinkers. MYP students are service-oriented doers and internationally-minded leaders, poised to make a positive impact in the world now and in the future. All MYP students participate in Services as Action.
Diploma Program (DP)
The DP provides students with an unparalleled depth and breadth of courses and selfmanaged learning. AIS students have a headstart when they reach college or university. DP students give back to the community in ways representing Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS). They study Theory of Knowledge, requiring them to reflect on what we claim to know, honing critical thinking skills. And through the DP Extended Essay requirement, students select topic of special interest to them and produce a 4,000 word, research essay.
Career-related program (CP)
The CP is an internationally recognized framework that incorporates the IB philosophy and rigor into a unique program, focussed on a more career-related educational pathway. The innovative IBCP curriculum develops future-ready students.
The AIS IBCP has unique features for its students, such as;
Personal & Professional Skills -to develop skills and strategies to be applied to personal and professional situations, Service Learning, a Reflective Project and specialist Language Development.

Language Clubs support student learning, in Chinese, English, French, German and Spanish, through enjoying activities such as crafts, art or cuisine.
Heritage Language Program
The Heritage Language Program is open to AIS and non-AIS students from 5K - Grade 5 and fosters home languages outside of the curriculum, currently Arabic, Dutch, Farsi, Korean, Portuguese and Russian.
Secondary School
School Supported Self-Taught Languages (SSST)
The IB promotes the literary heritage of a student’s home language. They can pursue native languages beyond our traditionally-taught languages.
SSST students are guided by a faculty member and partnered with an outside tutor.
Bilingual Diploma
Language learning allows your student to develop cognitive skills needed to be successful problem solvers in our intercultural world. All students graduate with skills to communicate in at least two languages, with many students earning a bilingual or even trilingual Diploma.
AISx
AISx is an innovative program, launched in 2023, designed to provide flexible, hybrid academic programs for students who are pursuing sporting, other specialist professional routes, or for those who simply want to explore a flexible academic schedule.
The AISx core mission is to develop courageous leaders who help shape their world for the better, with a joy of learning and purposeful effort.
This bespoke educational program ensures students are able to pursue their passions in sports, arts, or other professional fields, without compromising on high-quality academic rigor and holistic support, provided by an AIS education.
AISx is available to students in Upper School (High School, grades 9 - 12), for both day and boarding students. IB courses, honors level classes, dual enrollment, and other curricular offerings are available to AISx students.
Classes are taught either in person, online through remote instruction, or asynchronously, based on students’ individual needs. Most AISx students complete the in person element of their schedules at the AIS Sandy Springs Campus.
Through AISx, Atlanta International School has developed unique partnerships, where we are now the lead education provider for students in the Atlanta United Football Club Development Academy, and the Mouratoglou Academy Atlanta for tennis.
Supporting our Students
We understand that your student’s well-being is the most important thing in the world. Our counseling services will ensure that the academic, social, emotional, and personal needs of your child are met - so that they can reach their highest potential. All of our counseling is tailored according to the age and needs of a student.
In primary school, the personal and social education component of the IB PYP provides the framework for social and emotional issues, as well ensuring health and wellbeing for your student.
Your student’s secondary school counselor is their advocate, helping them to be the most they can be. They work with parents, teachers, and outside resources to give every student with tools for positive growth and development.
All AIS Boarding students will have access to a social, emotional, and health counselor at all times.
Learning Support
The Learning Support Department is committed to helping each child become a successful, effective, and joyful learner. We create an inclusive educational environment that fosters self-awareness, confidence, and the appreciation of each student’s unique strengths. By doing so, we aim to enhance their learning opportunities and help them reach their full potential.
English as an additional language (EAL)
In the EAL program, our goal is to ensure that students’ English proficiency allows them to reach their highest academic potential. We work with students, parents, and teachers to identify each child’s needs and to tailor teaching to meet their English language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
Athletics
AIS offers a wide variety of sports each season. The athletic department is dedicated to encouraging and developing student athletes through participation and competition. We emphasize the value of good health and well-being, and cultivate skills that help athletes become team oriented leaders who embody camaraderie, humility, and good character - in competition, practice, or just when having fun.
Primary School
Students in our Jr. Eagles program participate in a variety of sports throughout the school year. The program emphasizes basic skills and knowledge of sport.
Primary School students can enjoy basketball, Eagles on the Move (running/fitness), golf, recreational soccer, tennis, and volleyball.
Middle School
The vast majority of students who try out are placed on teams and have the opportunity to compete against other schools. A goal of Middle School athletics is to love sport in a culture that prepares students for Upper School teams.
Try out for basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swim, tennis, track and field, ultimate, and volleyball
Upper School
All students Grades 9 - 12 can try out for athletics teams, chosen on skill at this level. Upper School teams participate in the GHSA, aiming to compete at state championship level.
Basketball, cross country, eSports, golf, soccer, swim and dive, tennis, track and field, ultimate, and volleyball are the sports typically offered in Upper School.
Arts
Arts play a critical role in developing students, as effective communicators, able to express creativity. Theatre, music, visual arts, and media & film classes at AIS emphasize innovation, and learning a craft, processes, and techniques of an art form. Students integrate their understanding of the arts with local and global issues.
Theatre
Through IB classes and the co-curricular theatre season, AIS students develop a passion for theatre. Their training helps them to take risks, solve problems, collaborate, and have their voices heard.
Music
Our department of music serves all students from 3K to Grade 12. Through music classes, ensembles (chorus, orchestra and band), and an extensive private lesson program, students create, participate, and reflect on music from their own culture and of others.
Visual Arts
All students participate in the IB Visual Arts program, providing a way to explore the world, through artistic expression. Students have the opportunity to display artwork throughout the school.
Media & Film
Practical, hands-on instruction allows students to experience media production. Classes focus on guiding them to understand the power of media as a tool of expression and investigation,
Global & Experiential Learning
Travel and AIS go hand in hand. Primary School students take trips every year. And in Grade 5 they have a residential trip to a country that supports their language learningsuch as China, Costa Rica, Germany and France.
Secondary School students have field trips at the start of each school year, to destinations (such as Washington D.C. and Chicago). They also travel in support of their classes and extracurriculars - to Peru for a service project for example.
Innovation
By being reflective risk-takers, AIS students are perfectly poised to innovate.
Innovation is found throughout our IB curriculum and the learning and teaching methods at AIS. We strive to inspire your student to shape their future for the better.
Through interdisciplinary connections, encouraging them to pursue a wide range of activities both in and out of school, innovation happens. At AIS we ask students to push the boundaries of their thinking, in science, arts, language, and global understanding.
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)
In Primary School, STEAM is transdisciplinary. Students inquire and investigate through interconnected thinking.
In Secondary School, STEAM is interdisciplinary, where students integrate subject knowledge and skills with real world issues.
Innovation Programs
Many initiatives support students innovation, such as AIS Innovators, STEAM Lunch & Learn, Space Program, Summer Internship Program, and cocurricular programs.
Makerspaces
We have dedicated Makerspaces in Primary and Secondary Schools.
Equipped with state of the art technology, students are encouraged to design, prototype and iterate products.

Secondary School Beyond the Classroom
At Atlanta International School, we constantly ask ourselves, “How do we best prepare your student for life beyond school?” The answer lies not only in the world renowned IB curriculum, but in the opportunities we offer outside the classroom.
In addition to the industry internships, students throughout Secondary School participate in activities, including Global and Experiential Learning, Service as Action (SA), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), Athletics, Arts, and more.
Co-curricular & Extra curricular offerings
Secondary school students have clubs that include the following available: Afterschool Music Lessons, Athletics, Model United Nations, MS/US Theater Production, InVenture, MS Math Competition Club, MS Coding Club, Robotics, Science Olympiad, AV Team
Service as Action (SA)
SA is a fundamental part of the Middle Years Program. All students in Grades 610 are involved by participating in projects that contribute to positive change (be that in school, the local area, or globally).
Projects are often initiated by students and connect to their classes.
Creativity, Activity, Service
Another unique way in which AlS fosters world-ready leaders is through Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), an essential element of the IB Diploma Program. CAS extends learning beyond the classroom as students initiate and participate in experiences representing the three strands:
• Creativity: Arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
• Activity: Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
• Service: Collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need.
For each CAS experience, students learn to initiate and plan, implement, take action, and adapt as necessary.

Language Development
Personal and professional skills is designed for students to develop attitudes, skills and strategies to be applied now and in the future, with an emphasis is on skills development for the workplace
Service learning is the development and application of knowledge and skills towards meeting an identified and authentic community need. utilizing skills, understandings and values developed in their academic studies.
The reflective project is an in-depth body of work produced over an extended period of time and submitted towards the end of the CP. The reflective project promotes high-level research, writing and extended communication skills, intellectual discovery and creativity.
The ability to communicate in more than one language is essential to the IB’s concept of an international education. Language development encourages students to improve their proficiency in a language other than their best language.
College Counseling
Our college counselors provide expert, individualized guidance in the search and application process for universities worldwide. Through individual, family, and group meetings, we help your students to identify and apply to colleges and universities that best fit their academic and personal interests, needs, and goals.
