Letter from the Chair and Headmaster

Dear AIS Community,

Deb Sudbury

Kevin Glass

Chair of the Board of Trustees

Headmaster

2011-2012 was a memorable year in the history of our school. While this year brought our community the sad news of the death of our founding Headmaster, Alex Horsley, 2011-12 also witnessed the realization of a long-held dream of his and the school’s to plan for and build an immersion early learning center for three- and four-year-olds. In honor of Alex’s special place in our community, our new Early Learning Center Building was named and dedicated in his honor. Many people came together to achieve this goal and exciting milestone in the history of Atlanta International School, and construction took place for most the school year in order to open for the fall of 2012. This past school year also brought AIS some wonderful visibility in important educational leadership initiatives. In the fall, AIS hosted the prestigious “Harvard Project Zero” conference, which took place on our campus and at the Woodruff Arts Center. Having hundreds of educators from all over the world, including all of our teachers and educational administrators, spend a weekend at AIS hearing from educational luminaries such as Howard Gardner and David Perkins about the future of education was both motivating and a genuine tribute to our school and its educational leadership on both the national and international level. It was so gratifying to hear individuals of such international educational prominence sharing with others why they believe AIS is on the right path. Similarly, AIS was honored to host the Global Language Convention in the spring for the second time in four years. As always, our students are really why we all invest our time and resources in AIS, and their accomplishments this year both in and out of the classroom were notable. Thanks to our dedicated faculty and staff, the AIS class of 2012 enjoyed a remarkable 93% pass rate on the International Baccalaureate Diploma examination. College placements were similarly strong, thanks to our college counseling team and dedicated students and parents. The Class of 72 matriculated to nearly 50 different institutions of higher learning in the United States and overseas. On the athletic fields, our students advanced to State Competitions in Girls Volleyball, Girls Swimming, Ultimate Frisbee, Track & Field and Boys’ Soccer. Our Girls Ultimate Frisbee Team won the State Championship, and our Boys’ Soccer team finished second in the State. Likewise, our Mock Trial team won the Atlanta Region and finished second at State. Our award-winning theatre department was once again nominated for a bevy of Shuler Hensley Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theatre for the fall production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Our students also excelled in such varied activities as the Model United Nations team, the “World Peace Rose Gardens” poetry contest, robotics, international science and math contests, community service activities, student government… and the list goes on. Our students’ interests are as diverse as they are, and they excel through purposeful effort in pursuing their passions. In addition to enjoying another year of strong and stable financial management, the school also saw success in 2011-12 in raising financial aid resources through the Georgia State Tax Credit Program. As you may recall, this program (administered by the Apogee Scholarship Program) allows taxpayers, including C corporations, in the State of Georgia to dedicate a portion of their state tax payments to AIS and other independent schools for financial aid. As hoped, AIS’s participation in the Apogee program increased markedly this year, from $50,000 in 2010-11 to over $225,000 in 2011-12. We are exceedingly grateful for the community effort that produced this superb result. There are always many to thank for their contributions to AIS. We’d like to express our appreciation in particular to retiring Board Member Nancy Bauer for her significant and important impact on AIS for the last nine years, especially the work she has done in leadership positions related to marketing the school. We also applaud Sue Wooldridge for her exceptional efforts and leadership of the Parent Organization this year. Looking forward, we welcome four new Board members who will enrich our school and contribute over the years to come: Scott Britton, Chi Colberg, Mike McCarthy and Frank Thomas. We also welcome incoming PO President Dawn Hawkins and her very able PO leadership team. To all, we express our sincerest thanks for their contributions to AIS, both past and future. This has been a wonderful and successful year for AIS and its students in so many different ways. We thank you for your interest and investment in our school and community. We express, as always, deep gratitude to our school leaders and devoted faculty and staff who give so much to our students, parents and community. But most of all, we should never lose sight of what a special and unique community we have. AIS is deeply worthy of our continued interest and investment of time and resources. With warm wishes, Deb Sudbury, Board Chair Kevin Glass, Headmaster AIS ANNUAL REPORT / 2011-2012

AIS ANNUAL GIVING / AIS Annual Fund

Atlanta International School / 2011-2012 Annual Fund

2011-2012 Parent Participation BY GRADE

The Annual Fund is the most important fundraising effort at AIS. All contributions raised through the Annual Fund go directly into our operating budget to help fill the gap between tuition revenue and our operating expenses. The worthwhile investments help support all areas of the school—from faculty salaries to financial aid to day-to-day classroom programs. To accomplish the goals of the Annual Fund, it takes the support of the entire community— parents, trustees, faculty and staff, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends. In 2011-2012, over $750,000 was raised in unrestricted monies. Parent participation increased to almost 70%, with two grades in each division winning pizza parties for the highest parent participation. In Primary School, 1st grade came in the winner, with 3rd grade being the runner up. Tenth grade was the overall winner in the school as well as in the Secondary School with 9th grade coming in second. This year over 81% of our parents participated either by giving directly to the Annual Fund or through their participation in the Spring Benefit. Faculty and staff and the board of trustees held their longstanding tradition of 100% participation.

AIS ANNUAL GIVING July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012

Total Giving Contribution Formula (Contributions made between July 1, 2011 & June 30, 2012)

To fully acknowledge the valuable – and often times multiple – contributions our supporters make, this formula is used by the Development Office to calculate each donor’s total giving contribution and is used to determine membership in our leadership gift society, The 1984 Club. Gifts of Cash or Securities to Unrestricted or Restricted Annual Fund + Matching Gifts from employers* + Special Event participation (less any goods or services received)** + Special Event item purchases (less the fair market value) + In-kind gifts for the school’s operations (according to fair market value) + Auction item donations (according to their original fair market value once they are sold) = Total Giving Contribution for the year * Individuals must give a minimum of $1,750 personally in order to receive Spring Benefit tickets. ** Your Annual Fund pledge is a separate commitment from any Spring Benefit participation.

Georgia private school tax credit Donors The Georgia Private School Tax Credit allows eligible citizens to redirect a portion of their Georgia tax liability to support financial aid for the school of their choice. In the past five years, the AIS community has collected over $750,000 for financial aid for AIS students who qualify under the program. Each year, since 2008, the state has set aside $50 million in credits, distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. By redirecting your taxes (up to $2,500 filing jointly or $1,000 filing single), you will receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit at the state level against your Georgia income tax liability while providing scholarship assistance to incoming AIS students who are currently enrolled in public schools. C-corporations and trusts with a tax liability can redirect up to 75% of their state tax liability. In order to take advantage of this program, AIS has partnered with Apogee Georgia School Choice Scholarship Fund.Your donation to Apogee will allow you to redirect your taxes and benefit students at AIS. Participation is open to anyone who pays Georgia taxes. Please continue to share this information with anyone who would rather direct their dollars to AIS than to go to the state. Thank you to the following individuals who made contributions in 2011 to Apogee to benefit Atlanta International School.

AIS Legacy Gift

We are grateful for our alumni who give back to AIS. Alumni gifts are a symbol of support for AIS and its mission. Every time an alum chooses to make a gift AIS, he or she demonstrates gratitude for the education and experiences received at our school.

It has become an AIS tradition for each graduating senior class to give a Legacy Gift to the school. The gift is divided into two different initiatives: the Legacy Scholarship and the Legacy Gift. Last year’s Legacy Scholarship award went to CatherineWooster, who spent her summer volunteering and living with families in three rural villages in Thailand.

Spring benefit 2012

Passport to America

Oh, the Roaring 20’s it was…on Saturday, April 21, 2012, Atlanta International School transported more than 500 guests back in time to the Roaring 20’s. Guests enjoyed the sights and sounds of America including flapper dresses, vintage cars, a second line brass band, gospel music, as well as fabulous silent and live auctions, food and dancing. Guests were also treated to a special surprise performance by the AIS Theatre Department. If you haven’t already checked out the video, please visit the school’s YouTube page for a truly magical experience. The annual black-tie gala, organized by the Development Office and headed by parent volunteers, included a “Stand and Pledge” event where guests were invited to pledge funds directly to support financial aid at AIS. AIS raised over $94,000 in just over five minutes! This directly impacts the school’s ability to offer some additional financial assistance to current AIS families in need for this upcoming school year. The Spring Benefit started in the late 1980’s to support AIS’s mission of providing the increasingly global Atlanta community with an outstanding independent school. All proceeds from the Benefit contribute towards financial aid scholarships, faculty development programs and continued preservation of the historic campus buildings. This year’s Spring Benefit netted more than $260,000 for Atlanta International School. This fabulous event under the big top would not have been possible without the leadership of Chairs Anita Leopold (her second Spring Benefit!) and Darcie Adler and a host of parent, staff and faculty volunteers. 11

parent organization Message from Sue Wooldridge, President

It has always taken an entire village to raise a child and prepare them for the future. Today, the constituent parts and appearance of the traditional village have changed and continue to evolve at an increasingly rapid rate. At Atlanta International School, we are fortunate enough to be part of a global community or “village” of the future comprised of a multi-dimensional, diverse group of individuals. Our Parents Organization delivers a framework so that our families can collaborate to deliver to all of our children the knowledge and experience they will need to not only survive but flourish and make a positive contribution to the world that will exist in their future. Children cannot achieve a global perspective that values difference and diversity in a classroom setting alone. Our children must also experience an open-minded and multi-cultural environment that the AIS community is uniquely qualified to deliver. This is only possible with a strong sense of community and our parents’ commitment to share their culture, traditions, values and experience. At AIS, each parent or guardian is a member of the Parents Organization. This year the focus of the Parents Organization was to optimize the experience of our children by continuing to build and nurture our evolving community through a grass roots movement. Within the Family Ambassadors program, many of our tenured families made it their personal goal to help new families feel welcome in our community and to ensure the families had a smooth transition into our school environment and where needed or wanted, their local communities. No-one was left to fend for themselves unless they specifically chose to do so. Every new family, faculty and administrator was welcomed as a parent, a teacher and a student but most importantly as an individual as we guided them through the preparation and reality of their first year at AIS. Our grade representatives and room parents focused on building individual connections between families within a classroom, grade levels and schools through a variety of events targeted at families, parents and students. It seemed there was always a vibrant multi-cultural event to attend where we could network and learn from shared and unique experiences. The diversity of our families was celebrated throughout the year. WorldFest was our opportunity to share our cultures not just with each other but with the wider community in Atlanta including children from schools across the city. More than half of our families, faculty and administration worked together to ensure the success of the event. The brightest moment for me was when I overheard the wonder through a child’s words “This is the best day of my life. There is food from India, Germany, Brazil and even China. When can we come back?” Worldfest was further extended with more intense celebrations of specific cultures including German Christmas Market, Asian New Year, the rip-roaring, Cubanthemed Jazz in Black and White, La Kermesse, and a new event shared with us by our Persian families, Persian New Year. And then as if that was not enough, our varsity soccer team made it to the state cup final, and I don’t believe a single member of the extended school community missed the excitement. The athletics department and the parents hosted a fantastic celebration of good sportmanship, and the talents of both teams with an extraordinary consumption of pizza and good humour. The diversity of the extended community at AIS has always felt like our extended family but never more so than this year. I am truly fortunate to have been able to collaborate with so many that make such a positive and passionate contribution to our global “village” and to the lives of our children every day. AIS ANNUAL REPORT / 2011-2012

Our Mission To meet the challenges and opportunities of our interdependent, fast-changing world as responsible citizens, young people require flexible intellectual competence, self-discipline, and a global outlook. To achieve these goals, they need rigorous academic preparation and a passion to become the best they can be. To thrive in and contribute to this world, they must have a solid sense of self and respect for others—as individuals, as members of a group, as citizens of their nations, and as members of the global community. Extraordinary individuals will be called upon to shape the 21st century. The mission of Atlanta International School (AIS) is to develop such individuals. To fulfill this mission, AIS commits itself to the following goals: – to sustain and grow the exemplary level of teaching and learning that has earned it a world wide reputation for excellent standards in international and multilingual education within the framework of the International Baccalaureate; – to develop each child fully by helping each one to live our core values: the joy of learning and purposeful effort as well as mutual respect and understanding in a diverse setting; – to maintain an optimal size and composition of faculty and students to maximize the opportunities for learning and shared understanding that are necessary for a healthy community; – to help shape and improve local and global communities through the committed participation of its multilingual students, alumni, parents, faculty, and staff.

Our Core Values What We Believe Is Fundamentally Important We believe that encouraging each student to discover the intrinsic joy of learning and purposeful effort will help each one to set and achieve high academic standards. Furthermore, we believe it is vital to nurture mutual respect and understanding among all members of our community. Together we cultivate a spirited sense of hope in human potential. We believe the diversity of our community provides an extraordinary opportunity to enable our students to communicate, create, and collaborate in order to build a peaceful future. The joy of learning and purposeful effort We want our students to experience joy in their intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development. At AIS we will create a safe, stimulating educational environment, promoting the wonder and curiosity that motivate a student to explore learning in and beyond the classroom throughout life. We believe that achievement derives from sustained, purposeful effort and that our potential is best developed by learning to think critically, debate confidently, and push our limits. Ours is a community that nurtures and celebrates disciplined and myriad intelligences, and we approach teaching with the expectation that every student will be successful. Mutual respect and understanding in a diverse community We believe that every human being is valuable and deserves respect. We further believe that respect springs from understanding and that the best way to understand others is by learning to see the world from other points of view. Since each language reflects the values, history, and way of thinking of those who use it, learning another language is a particularly effective means of understanding and respecting others. We believe that a cohesive community of students, faculty, staff, and parents from many backgrounds—socio-economic, ethnic, racial, linguistic, national, and religious—provides an ideal setting for the development of respect and understanding and helps prepare students to thrive in a diverse, interdependent world.

AIS Non-Discrimination Statement Atlanta International School practices a full non-discriminatory policy in all school-administered programs and will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, national and ethnic origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation or gender preference in all of its admissions, educational and employment policies, programs, and practices.
