For the record Occasionally, my personal interests and a story we’re working on for INtown coincide. Such was the case in February when we decided to do our cover story on places to buy new and used vinyl records around the city. While most music lovers ditched their vinyl with the advent of CDs, MP3s and streaming, I kept mine. I also kept a turntable, because I appreciated the ceremony of removing a record from its sleeve, carefully placing it on the platter and the satisfying pop and crackle as the needle settled into place. On a chilly Friday morning, I set off for a day of record shopping with contributor and friend Julie Bloemeke, who is also a fan of vinyl. We managed to hit Wax ‘N’ Facts, Wuxtry and Decatur CD & Vinyl, vowing we weren’t going to buy very much, but at the end of the day we’d both spent nearly $100. It was worth it. I added some Peter Gabriel, Sade, Pretenders, Blondie, Swing Out Sister and Dionne Warwick to my collection, while Julie went for Neil Diamond, U2 and Prince. It was a fantastic afternoon of crate digging. If you turn to page 40, you’ll find a guide to a slew of Intown Collin Kelley shops that specialize in vinyl. My recommendation is to make a collin@atlantaintown- list of musicians or titles before you go, knowing that you will be paper.com sidetracked by all the other albums you didn’t know you wanted until you found them. If you’re in the market for a new turntable, many of the shops sell those, too. I highly recommend AudioTechnica. I bought my set up last year and it sounds fantastic. Enjoy your crate digging and let me know what treasures you find.

Work underway on new sports complex for Grady High School By Clare S. Richie

or years, soccer, football, lacrosse, softball and baseball players who attend Henry W. Grady High School’s urban campus in Midtown have dealt with insufficient field space for practice and games. Relief is on the way as Atlanta Public Schools (APS) converts the former Walden Middle School site near the Downtown Connector in the Old Fourth Ward into an off-campus athletic complex for Grady High School Athletics. “I am very happy that Grady Athletics will have use of a brand new $7 million athletic center. The setting is gorgeous. The fields have one of Atlanta’s best skyline views. This is a valuable investment,” Ash Parker, Grady Girls Lacrosse Assistant Coach said. The project is funded by the one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) that voters approved in 2016 and is on schedule for August 2018 completion. The complex will feature a turf field shared by the Grady Knights football, soccer and lacrosse teams and a convertible field for softball and baseball practices and games. To improve upon playing baseball on a dirt infield, APS will build a clay pitching-mound each spring. “With a field closer to Grady, the team can spend more time practicing on the field and not stuck in traffic,” Grady Baseball Coach Darryl Farley said. “This will help us work on more skills and drills that will help us during games. I think we will have better support from the students, teachers and feeder schools because they will be able to attend our games.” Once completed, the complex will also contain a field house with locker rooms, restrooms, concessions, storage and office space. Other project amenities will include sidewalks, limited parking, fencing, lighting, scoreboards, dugouts and concrete pads and bleachers. As of early February, the contractor had demolished the building, poured concrete for the field house and graded the fields. “I love that we are moving towards equity in athletic facilities across the district and that Grady athletes will have some of the same facilities that other high school athletes enjoy. We realize that competition practices spaces are in limited supply in the midtown area. This project is moving rapidly towards completion and we anxiously await the day we can hit Knight Field this summer,” Grady Principal Betsy Bockman stated. Teams like Boys Soccer Junior Varsity team that now practice on a small grassy patch near the stadium will soon have the space to train like their opponents. “The Walden Complex will allow our Grady sports teams to spread out. We can hardly wait to have adequate training space so we can give our coaches and players the space they need and deserve,” said Paige Cucchi, Grady Boys Varsity Soccer.

To truly make their mark on this facility two miles south of its main campus, Bockman has the authority to change the name. Current APS policy states that a principal may “name a room or designate some area on the school’s property in honor of an individual or group that has performed outstanding service to the school.” “I believe naming the field for the Grady Knights and/or the Grady Cluster would fall under this policy,” Erica Long APS Policy and Governance explained. Regardless of its name, excitement is building for the new complex to come on line next year, especially among older players and families. “As a senior I will not get the chance to ‘take the field’ on the new diamond but it still excites me knowing that Grady baseball will finally have a field that we can call home,” student Miles Pierre said. By Evelyn Andrews In a gigantic room holding the 359-foot-long “Battle of Atlanta” cyclorama, workers perched along the 50-foot-high painting on lifts with paintbrushes and iPads. Using old photographs and state-of-theart technology, they are bringing the 130-year-old painting back to life. The historic cyclorama painting of the pivotal Civil War battle was moved to the Atlanta History Center from Grant Park last year and many visitors are eager to see it in its new home. Not many know that the cyclorama is already hanging on the circular wall of a massive new exhibit hall for the extensive restoration work that must be completed before public display. It’s painstaking work that has already pushed that grand opening back from this fall to sometime in this winter. But in an exclusive preview, it was easy to see why. Having recently finished removing varnish and poor repainting done in a previous restoration, the museum is gearing up to repaint the entire sky and pieces removed over the painting’s 130-year history, Gordon Jones, the museum’s senior military historian and curator, said during a Jan. 25 tour of the new cyclorama building. The museum’s main goal is to present the painting as it was originally intended, correcting several flaws in how it was presented in Grant Park since 1921, Jones said. “Nobody that is alive today will have seen the painting the way it was supposed to be seen,” Jones said. “The whole thing here is restore the original illusion, which was virtual reality of its time.” The painting was “hanging like a loose shower curtain,” in the Grant Park building, ruining the illusion, museum spokesperson Howard Pousner said during the tour. The painting, which was first displayed in Minnesota in 1886 and toured various states before ending up in Atlanta, is now pulled tight, and in an impressive display covers the circular walls of the enormous room built to hold the cyclorama. In the center of the room is a raised viewing platform where visitors will overlook a diorama installed at the base of painting. That diorama, consisting of 128 soldiers, will be a restored version of one created for the Grant Park cyclorama display, Jones said. Technicians working on the “Battle of Atlanta” so far have removed varnish and poor repainting done during the 1979 to 1982

restoration. They will next repaint the entire sky to remove the numerous fluffy clouds that were added in 1922 to cover damage and stains, but ruin the illusion, Jones said. “We feel like that is an essential part of restoring it to how it looked in 1886,” Jones said. Several inches cut off the top of the painting each time the painting was moved will also be repainted. The chunks that were removed from the bottom of the painting in the 1930s after the diorama dirt caused the painting to mold will not be replaced, but covered by the new diorama, Jones said. The experts are also using old pictures as guides to repaint two large pieces that were removed. One piece was removed after the collapse of the roof of an Edgewood Avenue building, where the painting was installed prior to its longtime Grant Park home. The second piece was removed when the painting would not fit in the Grant Park building, Jones said. A ring of lights that shine on the painting to simulate daylight and assist the illusion will also be used for “dramatic lighting” that will occur during a periodic show that will explain what is happening in the painting. The show will be similar to the show at Grant Park, but include fewer details and be much shorter, Jones said. Visitors will be able to go behind the painting and read information about the restoration process, Jones said. Other related exhibits will be installed in the cyclorama building, including a historic streetlamp that is part of African American history, advertisements for the cyclorama from when it first opened and exhibits detailing how art and propaganda work to influence how historic events are remembered. The “Texas,” a legendary locomotive dating to 1856, has been installed inside a glass enclosure in the museum’s new wing built along with the cyclorama building. The locomotive was previously a main fixture of Grant Park’s cyclorama exhibit for 88 years. The locomotive can be seen from the outside, but the exhibit has not opened yet. Once it does open, visitors will be able to climb onto the train and into the cab. The museum, at 130 West Paces Ferry Road, has been at work cleaning and restoring the painting since August 2017. It initially hoped to open the exhibit in the fall of this year, but has pushed that back to the winter, Pousner said. The museum raised $35 million to move and restore the painting, and has set aside $10 million of that for future restorations, which will constantly be needed, Jones said. “There will another restoration and another restoration after that. It will never be done. But hopefully what we do is extend its life and we pass this on to the next generation,” Jones said.

Countdown begins for Super Bowl in Atlanta next year With the Philadelphia Eagles soaring to victory in last month’s Super Bowl in Minneapolis, the City of Atlanta was officially handed host responsibilities in a ceremony on Feb. 5 at the Mall of America. Super Bowl LIII will be played in Atlanta on Feb. 3, 2019, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Downtown. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell attended the ceremony, along with members of the Atlanta Super Bowl LIII Host Committee, including Executive Director Carl Adkins and Chief Operating Officer Brett Daniels, as well as President of the Atlanta Sports Council and Super Bowl LIII Host Committee Board of Directors Dan Corso. Representing the City of Atlanta at the ceremony was Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

“We are officially on the clock for Super Bowl LIII and we couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity to showcase Atlanta to the rest of world,” said Daniels. “We are already a full year into our planning process and know everyone will feel the incredible passion and pride of our city as we intend to put together the best Super Bowl experience ever.” The Atlanta Super Bowl LIII Host Committee introduced a video at the press conference titled, “We Are ATL,” featuring popular Atlanta musician, actor, philanthropist and devoted NFL fan, Ludacris. New renderings for Downtown redevelopment WRS, the South Carolina developer behind the revamp of Underground Atlanta, has released new renderings of the four-block redevelopment, including the area known as Kenny’s Alley – or Block 3 as it’s now known – at the southwest corner of Central and Alabama. Each March, thousands of athletes test themselves at the Publix Georgia Marathon/ Half Marathon. This year, the Kyle Pease Foundation led by brothers Kyle and Brent Pease is proud to support 58 disabled athletes accompanied by more than 200 volunteers as they tackle the hilly course. “When I see each athlete cross the finish line with a smile on their face, that brings the greatest joy to me,” foundation co-founder Kyle Pease said. “Publix and the Atlanta Track Club have done a great job supporting inclusion. I’m proud to be a part of it.” Nowadays, more wheelchair athletes are competing in endurance events, individually or assisted, in part due to early role models like the Boston marathon father/son duo “Team Hoyt” and now the Pease brothers. Kyle grew up with spastic quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, a neurological condition that creates a stiffness in muscles limiting his mobility. He has used a wheelchair since he was a young child. Family videos of Kyle, his twin Evan, and older brother Brent show a typical childhood of three brothers goofing around and playing sports. Big brother Brent was protective from an early age and made sure Kyle was included. “Brent always had that older brother mentality – he would always look out for me,” Kyle said. But as they grew older, Kyle couldn’t participate in certain sports, like baseball “the way everyone else played ball.” That all changed when the two “stumbled into the endurance world where you don’t have to change the rules. In February, they entered their first race together, a small neighborhood 10K. In March, they completed the Publix Half Marathon. By April they finished their first triathlon. And in June they started a foundation. “The idea for the foundation came right after we did our first triathlon. I had an aha moment. I want to get other people involved to give them hope and a sense of purpose,” Kyle said. Kyle and Brent co-founded The Kyle Pease Foundation (KPF) to provide assistance to meet the individual needs of disabled persons through sports. This is accomplished by providing scholarships, purchasing equipment, contributing to similarly purposed organizations and raising awareness through outreach. “My mom and dad surrounded me with sports growing up – I wanted to give that to other people,“ Kyle shared. At first, the brothers struggled to find other disabled athletes to join them, until they met Jake Vinson. His mother, Amy, approached Brent and Kyle after all three completed a 10K. “She came up to us after the race and said ‘this is incredible. I’ve been looking for something like this for my son. Tell me about it,’” Brent recalled. “We have a foundation. We can help.” At the 2012 Publix Half Marathon, a year after Kyle’s debut, Jay participated as the foundation’s first athlete in their first event. “Now, this is our largest event with 58 athletes and more than 200 volunteers,” Kyle said. Not only is the foundation growing in size, it may also expand its scope. “After (foundation athlete) Justin Knight, completed his first assisted Ironman, my assumption was that he would say he wanted to take on another race but instead he said ‘I At l a n t a I N t o w n Pa p e r. c o m

want a job,’” Brent said. “As a foundation we are providing inclusion, first and foremost to compete but the outcome gives a new found sense of purpose,” Brent said. Knight was ready to take on work, find a roommate and go on a date. For starters, Knight wrote 1,732 tax letters for the foundation. “We want to learn how can we be a catalyst beyond the finish line,” Brent said. We spotted a guy at Dick’s Sporting Goods wearing a t-shirt that said, “I can’t. My kid has practice.” All I could do was nod as if to say, I know, dude, I so know. It was a dreary Sunday afternoon and our basketball season had ended the day before with a thud as Elliott’s team lost a playoff game they could have won. I can offer that critique because I was the coach. We hoped to soothe the burn a little by shopping our way into soccer season. We started off as a very focused group. Elliott’s friend Sebastian was with us and while they both already had cleats, they needed flats for the once-a-week indoor practices. I assisted the boys while Kristen helped Margo find some running shoes for an upcoming 5k. Then we switched. Then we switched back because according to Margo, Mommy is better at shoe shopping than me. Then I lost everyone. Kristen and Margo had moved on to the vast, athleisure wear department and the boys just disappeared. I was wondering why the mannequins in the golf section all have the physique of an MMA fighter when a sales associate asked if he could help me find anything. I said “My wife and kids?” He thought I was kidding. As we slipped into hour two of our Dick’s excursion I found the boys loudly shooting baskets on goals that had plastic lids over the rims. I corralled them to help me find Kristen and Margo and they pantsed a mannequin along the way. Eventually we made it to the register and even with all my coupons you’d think I bought a boat. There is a valid argument I should care less about the outcomes of youth recreation basketball games. Like most By Tim Sullivan coaches in the league, I do and I don’t. I’m not a hysterical sideline presence but the want for our players to have a positive experience is strong. When I played in the NY Catholic school league, basketball was on par with religion. I’ll never offer advice on who or what to pray to nowadays but if we’re talking the implementation of a one-three-one trap defense, I’m going to have some opinions. Nothing is more satisfying to me than seeing a kid score their first basket and if a give and go actually works, it’s euphoric. Maybe it’s just me. Margo scored her first basket of the season on a beautiful Tim Sullivan grew up jumper but the team lost their playoff game 8-2. None of us were ready for that. Elliott was our leading scorer but that didn’t matter to him. He wanted more basketball and I didn’t blame him. When we got home, Elliott immediately started shooting hoops in the driveway. It was raining but I joined him anyway. We just shot around, breaking down the game and eventually we moved on to talking about what we might look to do next year. Maybe the rain was something of a therapeutic balm because after an hour he was ready for a snack, a shower and for soccer season to begin. I’ll get there eventually.

Sparrowhawk makes getting a tattoo like a day at the spa By Grace Huseth

hile some tattoo parlors can be grimy affairs, a trip to Sparrowhawk at Studioplex in Old Fourth Ward makes tattooing feel more like a day at the spa. The self-proclaimed intimate, feminist-inspired studio is an amalgamation of many different styles. The space stays bright with white walls, a fresh fig tree, fine art oil paintings and a comfy midcentury couch. Owner Amy Leavell Bransford, who also owns Aviary Beauty & Wellness Collective in Studioplex, used the help of interior designer Gavin Bernard and Atlanta based fiber artist Sonya Yong James to create macramé like partitions so tattoo tables have a private, but open feel. “The space has evolved into a gallery space where our clients are the canvas,” Bransford said. Sparrowhawk may attract women, but Bransford has found both men and women trust the space and the expertise of tattoo artist Cori James. There has been some cross-pollination of clients from Aviary, as well as clients who wish to support the female run shop and many who seek out James for her tattoo visions. Cori James has been tattooing in Atlanta since 2012 and is known for her own trademark technique: first she starts with a strong black outline, adds in black shading and then adds in color to make tattoos pop. This method allows for creative expression while a set process guarantees a tattoo that continues to look good years later. At Sparrowhawk, James tattoos by appointment only to ensure clients have time to curate the best design. Bransford met James at Aviary, while the artist was getting a facial. James voiced she was growing restless at a tattoo shop in the city and wished she could tattoo somewhere like Aviary that offered a more personal feel. There’s something about being in the chair that makes people open up. “When you are in a facial room, it’s very private and people share all sorts of aspects of what’s going on in their life,” Bransford said. “When you are in that environment you feel like the entire world passes through and you partly become a people connector.” As Bransford got tattoo business licenses for Sparrowhawk, she decided to get further licenses for other needle aesthetic services like microblading. She soon hired Juliana Ramus, who uses the microblading tattooing technique to create semi-permanent tattoos for flawless eyebrows. The former researcher in real estate finance was growing weary of corporate culture when she took a big leap into the world of microblading. “I knew I needed support and that I had so much to learn in this business because it works so differently than a big corporation,” Ramus said. “This was a huge risk, but I’m so glad I did it and now I do this full time.” Ramus clients range from those who are simply over tweezing to those who have alopecia or other hair loss concerns. One of her recent clients suffered from trichotillomania,

Ramus was able to use the client’s blank canvas to create new eyebrows to frame her face. “Now she doesn’t have to worry about that stuff,” Ramus said. “It might seem insignificant to some people, but it’s been a huge part of her life.” Sparrowhawk is expecting a rise in microblading clients this season. Since summers in Atlanta are so hot, many women like to pare down their beauty routines to avoid melting makeup and microblading eyebrows takes one step out of the grooming process. “I’ve supported other women entrepreneurs at the Aviary, including people who are afraid to leave well established spas and go out on their own. It’s been gratifying to me, as a publicist who has gone into the beauty industry, to be part of that,” Bransford said. The studio plans to acquire include a few more tattoo artists this spring, but doesn’t expect a full staff to blossom any time soon. “One thing that I learned from Aviary is that it’s really important to wait for the right team and sometimes that takes some patience,” Bransford said. “It’s a bit like being in a band, working in a space this small with only four or five players, so you want to make sure everybody has a specific highlight.” Sparrowhawk is located in Studioplex, 659 Auburn Ave., Unit G3. A JW Marriott hotel will rise on part of the former Georgia Dome site adjacent to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Downtown, according to a report from Tomorrow’s News Today. The 1,000room hotel would also be adjacent to the upcoming Home Depot Backyard, a tailgating and event space, which will fill much of the old Dome site.

Portman Holdings has secured financing for its $150 million, 21-story state-ofthe-art office development in Midtown for healthcare provider, Anthem. PCCP contributed equity financing and SunTrust was the lead lender, while Regions also served as a lender for the project. Anthem Technology Center will offer 352,000 square feet at Technology Square and act as a hub for about 3,000 multi-disciplinary IT professionals. The John Portman & Associates designed project will also feature more than 14,000 square feet of terrace area for greenspace and 7,000 square feet of retail space. SunTrust Bank will also open a full service branch at the building.

New renderings of historic Pullman Yards in Kirkwood have been released by Atomic Entertainment, which plans to transform the century-old train yard into a mixed-use development with an emphasis on filmmaking. There will be a soundstage for movie projects, office space, a boutique hotel, food bazaar, townhomes, apartments and a large greenspace for film screenings and concerts. Permitting is underway now and Atomic Entertainment hopes to break ground on the $200 million project in June. Paces Properties has partnered with Austin-based Bunkhouse on the adaptive redevelopment of the Intown Suites property in Piedmont Heights at Cheshire Bridge Road. The 1960’s Mid-Century Modern hotel will feature 162 rooms and 48 commercial studios. The soon-to-be-named hotel will begin construction in the second quarter of 2018 with a projected opening in 2019. AT&T will vacate its 47-story Midtown tower and consolidate its workers in smaller office spaces in Midtown and Buckhead, according to a report by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The building, located behind the Fox Theatre, is now being touted as a potential home for Amazon’s HQ2 headquarters. The office tower was originally constructed in 1982 for BellSouth and spurred the “Save the Fox” campaign when the historic theatre was threatened with demolition. Philips Arena will get a new name after the technology company announced it would not renew naming rights for the Downtown venue. According to Venues Today, the naming agreement will expire in June 2019. Philips has shifted its focus to residential lighting and healthcare technology, and indicated that the naming deal no longer fit with the brand. Kroger will introduce its new Scan, Bag, Go shopping technology at stores in Atlanta this year. The technology will allow customers to use a wireless handheld scanner or the Scan, Bag, Go app on their personal device to scan and bag products as they shop for a quicker, seamless checkout experience. The tech will also allow shoppers to view and download digital coupons, keep a running total of their order, and view the current week’s sales ad.

We’re seeing homes in West Midtown coming on the market and we have multiple offers within hours because everyone wants to get a jump on an area that’s prime for growth.” He stated that the BeltLine is the largest contribution and driving factor that Atlanta has seen in a great while. “It’s bringing Intown neighborhoods together and has become what we call Rodney Hinote, Ansley ‘Atlanta’s waterfront’,” Hinote said. “The closer to the BeltLine you Atlanta Real Estate are, the more desirable your property becomes.” Reed gave credit to the Art on the Atlanta BeltLine program for bringing people from throughout the Atlanta area to see the installations done by performing and visual artists. “The BeltLine has caused a boom in the neighborhoods close to it,” he said. Established developments in the area are in growth mode, too. Georgia Tech has begun construction on the Campus Safety Building, a new home for its campus police, and the university’s Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design will rise at the corners of State Street and Ferst Drive. Atlantic Station is starting a major expansion this year. It will add Atlantic Yards, a $189-million office project along 17th Street, and T3 Foundry Park, a stack of creative offices Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design aimed at younger, tech-savvy employees. Both projects are expected to bring in 2,000 more workers once they’re completed in 2020. Also slated for Atlantic Station is a block of 364 apartments by AMLI – with 25,000 feet of street-level shops – and an Embassy Suites hotel. It’s important to note that Atlanta’s Westside and West Intown are not just newly rediscovered tracts of industrial plants and warehouses. Several beautiful, vibrant neighborhoods have been flourishing there. Loring Heights and Berkeley Park, both located between Midtown and Buckhead, are two prime examples. “Atlanta continues to grow and one of the places we have space to grow is on the west side of the city. That’s why so much is happening so quickly,” explained Katherine Urquhart, Realtor, Kat U. Realty and social director for the Loring Heights Neighborhood Association. “Loring Heights is a very small community, just 320 homes,” she said. “We’re one of the last few Intown neighborhoods with tons of trees and a lot of the homes have beautiful views of the Midtown skyline.” The community hasn’t experienced a drastic spike in housing costs due to the BeltLine, according to Urquhart. She said that, unlike some areas further west, Loring Heights didn’t see the low prices that were common there. “The BeltLine doesn’t hurt anything, of course,” she said. “And due to the general increased interest in the BeltLine and Westside Park, an average home in Loring Heights lists for $550,000 or more.” Adjacent Berkeley Park stretches from Northside Drive to Howell Mill Road. Will Crick, Westside Station president of the Berkeley Park Neighborhood Association, said that since he bought his home

three years ago, he has seen a major increase in interest from prospective homebuyers in the small neighborhood. He reported that in the past year there have been several remodels and a couple of new constructions. Crick added that the BeltLine has been a transformative force for many neighborhoods around Atlanta and Berkeley Park is no exception. “The BeltLine is projected to run along the southern boundary of Berkeley Park,” he said, “and though it’ll probably be several years before it’s completed, many businesses – like Urban Tree Cidery – have made Berkeley Park their home in anticipation of the opportunity the BeltLine will bring.” He’s also looking forward to other developments and improvements in the area, Katherine Urquhart including the completion of Westside Park and the resurfacing of the Howell Mill corridor. “The addition of bike lanes, sidewalks and crosswalks will make Berkeley Park much more pedestrian friendly,” he said. “Every month I see new faces eager to take part in making their new community a better place,” Crick said. “I see Berkeley Park transforming from a beautiful, but often overlooked neighborhood, to a thriving urban village that combines the quaintness of a small neighborhood with the excitement of an urban lifestyle.” Urquhart reported that, overall, real estate in Westside and West Midtown is “going gangbusters. We listed a 100-year-old home in Howell Park that needed a lot of repair and restoration, and it sold for $60,000 over the asking price.” Hinote predicted that as more retail and restaurants come in and housing remains affordable, young professionals will flock to the area. “I think the proximity to Downtown, Midtown and the whole ‘cool factor’ of West Midtown is attracting true urban dwellers, from millennials to empty nesters who still Atlantic Yards crave the city vibe,” he said. There are specific hot spots that are bringing in homebuyers. “I think that West Highlands is very hot, especially with its proximity to Westside

Park,” Hinote said. “It’s a place where you can get a new home, located close to Downtown, Midtown and West Midtown for under $400,000. That’s hard to find these days.” Reed mentioned several other neighborhoods that are attention grabbers. “Right now, the historic Howell Station neighborhood, with homes ranging from $300,000 to $475,000, is happening due to its proximity to the BeltLine and Bellwood Quarry,” he said. “Westside Station, a brand-new community of homes from $429,000 to $599,000 is on fire right now. It offers a variety of new construction housing options from single family detached to townhouse style housing.” Another neighborhood that’s happening, according to Reed, is Riverside, where single family homes from $179,000 to $450,000 are available. He added that a plethora of apartment buildings are in Westside and West Midtown, and more are being built to accommodate potential residents who prefer to rent or want to try out the area before buying a home. Hinote advised millennials Berkeley Park to consider purchasing rather than renting, however. “I think that now is the time to invest in the West Midtown area,” he advised. “I believe prices will continue to rise and equity in a purchase is going to rise as well. When I was 27, the equity that I gained in my first home was life changing when I went to sell just two years after purchasing.” From the Westside vantage point, the future looks bright. The area’s access to Loring Heights Park prime neighborhoods, parks, restaurants and the BeltLine will continue to draw more people from around the metro area, as well as those relocating from other metropolitan areas.

Westside’s newest interior design market feels more like an art gallery By Grace Huseth Thursday is Brandon Quigley’s favorite day at Upper Westside Interiors. During opening hours, the store manager is busy greeting guests and visiting dealer booths. In the evening, he and fellow interior designers take to Facebook live to chat about design tips between sips of wine. For him it’s a full day of everything that Upper Westside Interiors has to offer. With more than 80 dealers and 150 contributing artists, the former door and window manufacturing facility at the corner of Collier Road and Defoor Hills Road was transformed last summer into a spacious interiors, antiques and artists market. With so many unique pieces, whether art or antiques, it’s important to have a tour guide in someone like Quigley. The store manager is not a salesperson but a stylist seeking to help each customer identify designs that will best reflect the individual personality of a home. The dealer booths have recently been curated to look fresh for the new spring season. “We don’t put limitations on the dealers. We say, ‘Be creative, let your personality show in your booths. I don’t want anything typical or trendy. I want what makes you happy,’” Quigley said. When everything is marvelously displayed, it’s hard to notice all the delicious details throughout the showroom. A wall of fluffy pillows is a star attraction, and so is a large glass case displaying Art Deco jewelry beneath a bold steampunk chandelier. A wide center hallway is devoted to art of all kinds. This corridor gives off a museum feel, but breaks tradition by displaying an impressionist painting next to a mixed medium piece and above a metal installation. Furniture often includes elements of art, such as dealer Sittin’ Pretty who reupholsters chairs taking ideas from recent Vogue fashions, while artist Harry Tallman makes functional light fixtures from industrial components to turn cookie cutter desk lamps into conversation pieces. “The whole focus on this entire building is art and creativity. Even if someone just has interior design in mind, they are going to find a way to incorporate an artist,” Quigley said. If the art inside doesn’t draw a crowd, the mural on Upper Westside Interiors will. Commissioned by the building owner to coin the area Upper Westside, mural artist Daniel Flores was hired to create a 300-foot long design that combines the Atlanta skyline with a train to reflect the neighborhood’s transportation history. In an effort to promote art, Upper Westside Interiors has a full calendar of classes, workshops and events that take place in a special area called Creativity Station. “Apart from it being a store and art gallery, we want to focus on bringing people in to take classes on everything from furniture refinishing to teaching interior design classes,” Quigley said. Take a tip from Quigley: while he gravitates to Victorian and contemporary designs, he never lets himself be boxed into one style. Instead, a chosen color palate allows for a variety of designs, from antique to industrial accents, all within color continuity. Buckhead Coalition touts apartment growth By Evelyn Andrews Buckhead Coalition president Sam Massell is drawing attention to the growth of apartments in the neighborhood, saying they are a “two-edged” sword that can bring nearly as many problems as they do benefits. The coalition is touting the apartments in the neighborhood on the cover of this year’s Buckhead Guidebook, an annual publication by the coalition that gives a comprehensive look at the neighborhood. The cover of the book, which was distributed at the Buckhead Coalition’s annual meeting on Jan. 31, is a sprawling spreadsheet of 55 names of apartment buildings that have been proposed or constructed since 2012. “The multi-use buildings under construction in this region — enough to create a new skyline and surprise residents and visitors alike — has the economy all aglitter,” the coalition wrote in the book’s introduction. “Although we acknowledge impressive growth in Midtown, as well as real valueadded improvements in Downtown, Buckhead doesn’t take a back seat to any of our neighborhoods,” it continued. There were 12,000 apartment units when the Buckhead Coalition started keeping track in 2012, Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell said. Since then, 17,114 apartment units have been built or proposed, with 1,741 of those units later taken off the

drawing board. “Too much of a good thing may have to have some control, but we see it as a major part of Buckhead,” Massell said. “It needs to be included in the community as a part of the formula for what makes it great.” Massell predicted the continued growth of apartments in his 2016 “State of Buckhead” speech, in which he encouraged audience members to embrace the changes they bring, including an influx of millennials. The cover of the annual guidebook highlights a different trend in the community each year. Last year, it highlighted Buckhead’s entrepreneur community and “idea incubators” like Atlanta Tech Village. The 2016 cover highlighted millennials. Massell said that some people are critical of apartments because of their potential effects on the community, but said the apartments are already in Buckhead, so they must be accepted. “It’s not a question of if we can have them or if we should have them. They are already here. They are us,” said Massell, who spent 20 years in the real estate business before entering public office. But Massell acknowledged possible downsides to density. “They are correct that density does generate problems in any community. It generates more crime. It generates more traffic. It generates more pollution,” he said. City Councilmember Howard Shook introduced legislation last year to deal with worsening traffic issues caused in part by the apartment developments in the Peachtree Road corridor. The legislation would create an overlay district with new limits on parking spaces. But lack of density can be even worse, Massell said. It can generate poverty, deterioration of buildings and lack of business expansion, he said. That eventually can trickle down to not having enough people living there to generate enough property revenue to provide amenities. “It’s a two-edged sword, definitely. I’m not trying to deny that,” he said. Apartments also provide more opportunities to create more affordable housing in Buckhead, which currently does not have many affordable options, Massell said. Apartments also draw millennials who are more likely to ride bikes or transit and could help push for more transit expansion and other forms of alternative commuting, he said. “We’re looking at it from the view of, ‘Here’s what we have. How do we make the best of it?’ ” he said. Another change noted in the guidebook is that the estimated Buckhead population has surpassed the 90,000 mark. The guidebook, which includes data for the previous year, has data that estimates 2017’s population was 90,390. The 2016 population estimated in last year’s guidebook was 87,314. Meanwhile, Massell is working on the next major event that follows the annual meeting — his “State of Buckhead” address. Cars, refuse, diminishing local plants that typically provide food and shelter, and the effects of pesticides all have a negative effect on the environment and its inhabitants. In an increasingly unwelcoming world, who is there to look out for the animals whose presence long predates condos and malls?

and art auction called Wild Night Out which occurs in the fall. “As a nonprofit wildlife hospital, funding is always a challenge,” Lange continued. “Food and medicine for a coyote who needs months of intensive care can really add up.” Caring for a vast array of animals requires a multitude of supplies, food, and medicines. This is the case especially in ‘baby season,’ as they call it, which is a span of time that runs from Spring until Fall, when orphaned babies are brought into the center in spades. While many times the animals are truly abandoned and need help, there are some that are also mistakenly removed from their parents and natural habitats by well-intentioned rescuers. Public education is a big part of the work that the center does, though it is often behind the scenes. Misinformation about the wildlife around us leads to errors in judgement, and those who work at AWARE actively try to improve the community’s understanding about these creatures. “We have to find a way to educate the public,” said Sami Netherton, a wildlife care supervisor at the center. Originally volunteering at the center in the summer of 2016, she later accepted a permanent position near the start of 2017. Her bachelor’s in biology has served her immensely in caring for her wards, and it’s clear that she’s very passionate about the work, though she admits that “you are always learning… to the end of time.” Julia Sparks followed a similar path. Rather than coming from a background in biology, Sparks had gone to school for humanities. “I had not planned on being a vet,” Sparks explained, but began working at

AWARE because she was interested in the work. Sometimes, being a wildlife care specialist is a particularly unglamourous job, as all of the creatures in her care require cleaning, along with their enclosures, on a daily basis. But if you ask Sparks what it’s like? “It’s very exciting,” she said with a smile. So what can the public do to help AWARE in their selfless cause? Well, beyond offering your time and energy as a volunteer (“no prior experience needed!” assured Lange, who said interested parties should email volunteer@awarewildlife. org), the community can also contribute by attending the center’s fundraising events, contributing financially or purchasing items from AWARE’s Amazon Wish List, buying their promotional shirts designed by local artist Black Cat Tips, and informing friends and family about the center and their mission. The most dangerous thing you can do as a parent, or a teacher, is to pretend like something is not happening when it clearly is, especially when that thing will have consequences for the lives of your children or students. As the old saying goes, denial is not just a river in Egypt; it is a force in all of our lives. But, how do you talk about an issue like climate change, which is already occurring and will accelerate in the lifetimes of today’s young people, without scaring or depressing them? Father and climate journalist Jeff Goodell, a man whom I’ve known since he wrote “Big Coal” more than a decade ago, has some ideas that he offered to the parenting resource, Fatherly. I’d like to share some of them with you, along with stories from local teachers and school leaders. First, no age is too early to start talking about how the natural world is changing around us. As Jeff says: “It’s an ongoing conversation that one has throughout their lives; it starts out with talking about science – in the way that a three or four-year-old would understand it.” Animal stories about polar bears on the declining ice or birds that have to migrate are examples. In Jeff’s view, “Mother Nature is the greatest storyteller of all.” At Pace Academy in Atlanta, climate change is fully integrated into the K-12 student curriculum, according to Trish Anderson, director of the Isdell Center for Global Leadership. This program cultivates leadership capabilities among students by focusing on annual themes that range from climate, water and food to conservation and energy. Trish says that a core principle of the Global Leadership program is “advocacy for change within communities.” It is not just about service, but also developing “a mindset” of advocacy in relation to others. Another common theme: Make sure that your children and students spend time outside: to have fun in nature, learn how the natural world is connected to our everyday lives, and develop a feeling of personal responsibility for its care. Provide opportunities for outdoor adventures. Let your kids get dirty and muck about in nature. Show them how streams connect to rivers and then the ocean, how trees and forests provide important services for all species, how and why birds migrate and more. Che Calix, a science teacher at The Paideia School who previously taught in a public school in East Point, says that it’s tough to get the climate change subject into public schools because “there is so much other material that must be taught.” Now at Paideia, he’s been “blown away” by the level of understanding and acceptance of climate change. Che says that the topic comes up “organically” with his middle school students and notes that he is careful to present information based on the students’ level of awareness and sophistication. “Dealing with change is what we as humans have to do,” says Jeff Goodell optimistically. For years, he has been working thoughtfully and strategically to raise his children to be tough, smart and resilient – to know that they are moving into a different world and to be ready for it. I have no doubt but that my grandchildren will live in a world that will be fundamentally different than the one I have experienced – that there will be social, food and water disruptions that we can only begin to imagine. I worry about how they will live and thrive and often contemplate what I can do (once they arrive in the coming years) to help them be strong, adaptable, compassionate and always hopeful.

n 2016, Americans ate over 4.5 billion tacos, and those numbers continue to rise. The simplicity, the tastiness and the variety of modifications can please even the pickiest of palates. My own taco love affair began with a small neighborhood restaurant called Pozole, which was tucked away behind the Dark Horse Tavern in Virginia-Highland. I called it my home for several years when I was working my way through school at Georgia State, first as a hostess and later as a server. Sadly, Pozole has since shuttered its doors, but I have great memories. And their $1 taco night pulled me through many a financially tight time. Now, the concept behind tacos is pretty

simple, and their origin is contentious, storied and not necessarily the most glamorous. While native cultures in both North and South America relied upon corn for a number of uses spanning the past millennia, and there is evidence that baked corn cakes were wrapped around fish and insects long before written history, it is commonly accepted that the tacos we know today can be traced most directly to an evolution of Mexican street food. Though the onset of colonialism and the impact of European and American tastes has undoubtedly taken tacos in a direction away from their cultural origins, the dish remains a staple of what we consider Mexican cuisine. In Atlanta, there are plenty of places to get a delicious taco, so for this month’s food feature, I checked out four of them.

Do you use your own kitchen as a lab, or save experiments for the restaurant’s kitchen?

Most chefs might be a little ashamed to admit it, but I guarantee that after spending upwards of 80 hours a week of doing so for the love of the game, sometimes you just want someone else to cook for you. I spend a lot of my free time trying new restaurants and meeting fellow chefs. When I do cook for myself at home, it’s for personal comfort. My most favorite dish is a humble and hearty pot pie. The irresistible combination of flaky crust and silky gravy, full of meat and vegetables, just does something for my head and my heart. It reminds me of home. On using the kitchen versus home for experiments, it’s always at the restaurant. The rewards are greater.

Q: Do you ever make pastries for your dogs at home? A:

I have certainly considered pampering my pooches with home-baked goods, but in all reality, they will always prefer cat poop over any biscuit I could ever make them, so what’s the point?

Q: Most people think pastry chefs just make dessert. What else to do they contribute? A:

I began my culinary career on the savory side of things – five years in the industry were spent slinging sandwiches, rolling burritos, and making far more salads than I want to ever relive. Those experiences are what constantly drive me to “be more than just a pastry chef.” Pastry chefs are often underestimated, and sometimes expected to just produce the desserts. However, we still come to work every day to the very same kitchen as our fellow savory cooks, and still observe everything that everyone is creating around us. In culinary school, if you want to study to be a pastry chef, you still must learn the savory stuff, too. The characteristic pastry chefs possess that contributes to the rest of the restaurant? My most simple answer would be patience, because following a recipe requires a lot of it.

Q: What’s the difference between how you

cook at home versus at work? Are there things you’d never cook for yourself at home?

Q: Kitchens are an intense atmosphere. What does your kitchen sound like? Is it deadly silent, does somebody pick a radio station or playlist, or do you just fling witty banter? A:

The sound of the kitchen depends on the time of the day; it goes through many different moods. The early morning is mostly silent, with my prep team working diligently together to start the day off on the right foot. When the cooks start to trickle in, the noise begins to grow with every story told of the crazy night before; then comes the witty banter. It is also understood that to efficiently tackle your tasks, you must be focused. Say hello to everyone, but carry on. Then comes the moment when the dining room begins to fill, and the line begins to hum with sizzling pans, crackling fire and the clinking of plating spoons. That is my most favorite moment of the day, my most favorite sounds. Sometimes I wonder if it’s what marching into battle might sound like, in its own way.

Q: Are aprons really a necessary thing? A lot of aprons look cool, but if your chef ’s jacket has enough pockets, is an apron just fashionable overkill? A:

Aprons are very necessary. Take it from me, a chef who works with flour and chocolate all day: you can only imagine how unattractive my presentation would be without it (think

In this world of intense social media and the need to show everyone, everywhere, what’s happening in your life, there’s a large pool of like-minded individuals that feed my creativity. I also have fellow pastry chefs here in Atlanta that I drool over from time to time; they know who they are. Most of what I do is self-taught. My own curiosity and desire to know everything bends the limitations of pastry, and keeps me thirsty for more information.

I value the “tale as old as time” desserts, the ones you can order in any restaurant anywhere, anytime, and it will be exactly what you’re looking for—even it’s not the most stellar version of itself. RFD Social to open inside Ponce City Market tower TRIVIA

Tuesday Nights - 8pm (Starts March 6)

The iconic tower of Ponce City Market is being transformed into a new lobby bar and event space called RFD Social, which is set to debut next month. Slater Hospitality – the owner/operator of Skyline Park, Nine Mile Station and Rooftop Terrace event space – began restoring the tower last fall and will unveil the new experiences to the public this March. Local design firm, ASD | SKY used Ponce City Market’s industrial roots to define the design palate for each level of RFD Social. Upon arriving from the freight elevator’s 10th floor entrance to The Roof at PCM, guests will now be welcomed by The Parlour, which will feature a full bar and lounge with 77 seats, vintage French chandeliers, bistrostyle tables, custom brown leather banquettes and a display of oldfashioned radios and photography. The Parlour will offer early century style games including bumper pool, tabletop shuffle board and an antique poker table. Open to the public during Skyline Park’s regular

hours, the expanded lobby area will also be available for private event bookings. The newly restored 11th floor will boast 3,970 square feet of private meeting and fully private event space called the Roebuck Room that can host 175 guests for a variety of gatherings including team building, training, off-site meetings and social events. The Roebuck Room houses both a small and large conference room, as well as a much larger flexible event room, and will feature vintage touches that celebrate the building’s history. “With RFD Social, we are hoping to preserve the vintage feel and history of the tower, while offering two new event and entertainment experiences for our guests

on the Roof,” said Mandy Slater, owner of Slater Hospitality. “This expansion has been a project of passion and dedication for our team and we look forward to unveiling the finished space next month.” The name “RFD Social” was inspired by Dinner Bell R.F.D. (Radio Farmer’s Democracy), a local radio show originally broadcasted from the tower’s 11th floor in the 1920s. Sears & Roebuck would air the show three days a week at noon, when rural farmers and housewives took a break from their day to gather around the table. At the start of each program, host and harmonist Dewey Burnett would ring a dinner bell, followed by a show full of farming and homemaking advice and music by local musicians of the time, from John Carson to the Wompus Cats. Put the Needle on the Record Music lovers flock to local shops as vinyl becomes hip again By Collin Kelley

f you thought vinyl records were musty and dusty old relics from your parents’ or grandparents’ generation, think again. Billboard magazine reports that nearly 15 million vinyl albums were sold in the U.S. alone during 2017. In the United Kingdom, vinyl is now outselling digital music downloads. Vinyl virtually disappeared in the 1990s as new albums were released on CD. In the last decade, vinyl has made a huge comeback as music fans discover the richer sounds, the large sleeve artwork and the simple satisfaction crackle and pop as a turntable needle drops on the record. Most new albums by major acts now get a vinyl release along with the CD and release on streaming services. Audiophiles and DJs kept vinyl on life support during the dark ages, and so did a handful of Atlanta record shops. Even as CDs, iTunes and Spotify became the go-to source for music, shops like Wax ‘N’ Facts and Wuxtry continued to buy, sell and trade used records to those who refused to part with their vinyl collections. The advent of Record Store Day in 2007 was another indicator that vinyl was making a comeback. Now, major and indie music labels release special and limited edition records that have music-lovers queuing up outside their favorite shop at the crack of dawn. Record Store Day returns on April 21 and you can see the list of releases at recordstoreday.com. These shops are perfect for an afternoon of crate digging for old and new treasures.

The shop caters to all tastes – from pop and jazz to hip-hop and country and most stops in between. There’s also a good selection of jazz reissues (Miles Davis, Nina Simone, John Coltrane), plus 45 rpms, CDs and rare releases.

Meet the women who are making vital new music in Atlanta By Isadora Pennington When the president of the Recording Academy suggested during the recent Grammy Awards that womend needed to “step up” if they wanted more recognition, the backlash was fierce. The tonedeafness of the statement flew in the face of women topping the charts and forging their own careers on the international, national and local stage. Atlanta, for instance, has produced Indigo Girls, India.Arie, Janelle Monae and Jennifer Nettles to name just a few. Local stages are filled on a weekly basis by talented female musicians who are making their mark on the world. Here are three you should give a listen.

◄ CHANTAE CANN With an upbeat and soulful vibe, Cann’s work is a mix of neo-jazz, soul and R&B. “I call myself an ‘inspiration junkie’ because I can literally be inspired by the smallest thing,” explained Cann. “I’m also inspired by my own personal life lessons, so I do a lot of writing from that point of view. It is my continuous prayer that my listeners will feel encouraged, uplifted and empowered, mainly because I’ve known what it feels like to not feel that.” Cann has been singing since she was 5 years old, and was encouraged by her mother who was a music teacher at her school, and later she was inspired to break out of her shell by singing with a praise team at church. A diagnoses of Huntington’s Disease has given Cann a unique view of life and what it has to offer her as a musician. “I absolutely draw inspiration from what some may say is an ‘end all, be all’ situation, but such is not the case,” explained Cann, noting that a strong faith in God has helped her to maintain a sense of peace and direction in her life. “If anything, it has allowed me to become more intentional and deliberate in my mission, which has been extremely life changing, to say the least. ADELAIDE TAI ► According to indie/folk/Americana musician Adelaide Tai, the time and place are right for women to create new music in the city. “Atlanta is a fabulous place to be making music. I’ve noticed an especially fun movement of women collaborating, sharing knowledge and stages with each other in Atlanta music and that feels good to be a part of.” Having grown up mixed race in the South in a strict religious community, Tai used her love of music and art as a means of communication. “I am such an introvert that I could easily become a hermit painting and hanging out with my chickens at home all of my days,” said Tai. “Music helps me go outside! I have to leave the house to play shows and it keeps me somewhat socialized. I couldn’t live without either.” Musically, Tai is inspired most by “girls with guitars,” and lists Patty Griffin, Feist, Sharon Van Etten and Valerie June as her current influences. Before putting words to chords, Tai wrote poetry, and it was thanks to a college boyfriend that she felt encouraged to add a melody. Together the two performed at bars and small venues around town, and after the relationship ended she taught herself guitar so that she could continue playing. In the years since, Tai has continued playing around town and she’s currently working on recording a solo album. While she is in the studio, she often references color palettes and visual aids as she develops her music. “There are things I can communicate through music that I can’t through painting,” she explained. “The opposite is true also of course.” Find out more at hiadelaide.com.

CELLI ▲ This quartet of talented cellists perform pieces that are mashups of classical music and other genres to create something altogether new. “We want rock music lovers to end up loving classical music, and classical music lovers to expand their horizons to R&B,” explained Erin Cassel Idnani. You may have seen them recently when they partnered up with Jermaine Dupri for the new Falcons video, playing four cellos atop Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Celli was formed thanks to one particularly influential cello instructor by the name of Martha Gerschefski with whom they all took lessons and got to know one another. “We found ourselves sitting near each other in the Savannah Philharmonic cello section and had such a wonderful time playing next to each other that we thought to try some chamber music together,” said Jessica Messere. All four members of Celli – Erin Cassel Idnani, Jessica Messere, Nan Kemberling and Mary Beth Bryant – run private tutoring studios outside of performing with the group. Highlights from their past shows include two TedX talks, many performances at Spivey Hall, which they generally refer to as their favorite place to play, and their crowning achievement of playing a six hour marathon to raise $10,000 for an organization called Peace of Thread. “They help give refugee women hope in this country, and being able to hand them a check with enough money to sponsor 10 women’s job training was a completely humbling experience,” said Idnani. “If we aren’t going use our gift of music to help the world, what is the point?” Celli continues to seek ways to give back to the community and connect classical music with other genres. By Isadora Pennington It’s a rainy Saturday night in early February and the sidewalks of Little Five Points are teeming with pedestrians. One area in particular is busier than the others, with crowds nearly overflowing into the street for the opening night of The Gallery by Wish ATL. Excitement is in the air as visitors wait their turn to get inside and see the work of legendary street art photographer Martha Cooper. The Gallery is a new concept by Wish ATL, the popular streetwear and sneaker retailer which is located just steps away on Moreland Avenue. “The Gallery was an idea for an extension of our business to fully invest in the creatives within our community,” explained Julie Hogg, managing director of Wish ATL. The clientele that frequent the retailer are an inherently creative bunch, and those behind the scenes have been infusing art into their space through the use of store design and branding. “We wanted to give our store customer an outlet to see, touch, feel and learn about artists, both new and established, that are of interest to them,” said Hogg. When 42 Degrees South, a gift shop that featured tobacco accessories and glass art, recently shuttered its doors for good in 2017, the management team at Wish knew immediately that this was the time to strike. “When we learned of the space opening up, it was a natural decision,” Hogg continued. “We want our customers to flow freely between the store and gallery, attending events for both entities.” The Gallery’s new mananger and curator is a well-known name in the city’s art community: Monica Campana, executive director and co-founder of the Living Walls street art conference. “This would not have happened if they had not wanted to have a space to cater to their creative community,” Campana said of the management at Wish ATL. “Art is a big part of their DNA, and they were trying to see what that would look like.” Established in 2009, Living Walls has become an Atlanta institution, bringing national and even international attention to the city’s artists and community. “I feel very grateful that I have been able to develop relationships with really incredible artists over the past eight or nine years. That’s one of the aspects that I bring to the space,” she said. At the time, there were some exciting new art happenings in the city, with small galleries such as Beep Beep and Young Blood (which is now known as Young Blood Boutique and no longer offers a gallery) providing a much needed outlet for up and coming artists. “To see some of those spaces that meant so much to me and were such big staples go away, it kinda sucked,” Campana said. “Which is why I think this space is very exciting to me – to be able to bring something to this neighborhood.” These days there are a number of both established and new art spaces throughout the city, all of which serve a function within the community as hubs for artists and art lovers. Campana is excited to be able to aid and be a part of the local art scene with her contributions at The Gallery, bringing a highlight to Little Five Points specifically. While Campana has been a longtime supporter of the local art scene, she admits that at times she has felt underrepresented amidst the overwhelmingly caucasian crowds that who frequent art events in the city, and she aims to shake that up by featuring diverse artists and contentious subject matter touching on topics such as immigrants rights and the #MeToo movement. Since accepting the role of curator and gallery manager in October, Campana has been plotting and planning exhibitions throughout the coming year, and says she aims to have a new exhibition each month. There is plenty of room for growth within The Gallery, as Campana and the team at Wish ATL are actively defining the space and its role within the community as they go. “It is a brand new business that we are creating here, and that’s also what’s making it exciting. When you think of the word “museum,” does a big, dusty building come to mind? Well, think again. Metro Atlanta has its share of big museums, but there are plenty of smaller, specialized ones filled with surprising collections.

Atlanta Monetary Museum Ever wonder just what a million bucks looks like? Or a bar of gold? Delta Flight Museum Up, up and away! The Delta Flight Museum occupies original 1940s-era Delta Air Lines hangars minutes from HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport. The museum, started in 1995, promises a chance to check out historic aircraft dating to the 1920s; to see the only full-motion flight simulator open to the public in the United States; and to learn the history of a company that started as a crop-dusting operation and grew into one of the world’s largest airlines.

Atlanta Jewish Music Festival returns for ninth year The 9th annual Atlanta Jewish Music Festival (AJMF9) returns March 8 - 25 with a series of public and private performances at venues across the city. This year’s lineup includes Marc Cohn, Joshua Radin, Tsvey Brider, Beyond the Pale, Lola Marsh, Yemen Blues, Chana Rothman, Gershone & Flavia, Joe Alterman, Beth Schafer, ATL Collective and many more. Venues will include City Winery, Aisle 5, Congregation Bet Haverim, Ferst Center for the Arts, The Temple, Icebox, Temple Beth Tikvah, The Breman, Venkman’s, Temple Sinai, Alon’s Dunwoody, Industrious at Ponce City Market, Vista Yoga, Orpheus Brewery, Marcus Jewish Community Center, Music Room, Ahavath Achim Synagogue and Smith’s Olde Bar. Academy Award-winner Jane Fonda celebrated her 80th birthday in Atlanta hosting a party and fundraiser for her nonprofit GCAPP (Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential) at the Whitley Hotel in Buckhead. The event raised $1.3 million and featured musical performances by Carole King and James Taylor.
