School board bungles Carstarphen’s ouster The Atlanta School Board’s handling of Superintendent Meria Carstarphen’s ouster has been – in a word – disastrous. This is the kind of bungle that cause parents and voters in general to lose confidence in its elected officials. It’s clear that Carstarphen was a polarizing figure: she was beloved by many students, parents and community leaders for her efforts to repair the school system’s tattered reputation after the standardized test cheating scandal. Her no-nonsense approach reportedly rubbed some of her colleagues the wrong way, and maybe some of the school board members, too, who didn’t like that she was the very public “face” of Atlanta Public Schools. Teachers and administrators were vocally unhappy about Carstarphen’s move to use private charter companies to turnaround six of the system’s low-performing schools. The school board decided in July that they weren’t going to extend Carstarphen’s contract, but rather than make it public, they decided to wait until September, according to Chairman Jason Esteves, as not to disrupt the start of the new school year. It also gave the board time to hire a public relations firm to deal with the fallout they obviously knew was on the way. The board held a questionable executive session to discuss Collin Kelley a “personnel matter” at its September meeting, emerging to collin@atlantaintownannounce it had decided not to renew Carstarphen’s contract paper.com beyond the 2019-20 school term. If the board had already made its decision over the summer, this meeting, on its face, feels like a sham. Initially, Esteves wouldn’t say which members voted not to renew the superintendent’s contract and only after pressing by local media was that revealed. When the board members who voted against renewal finally did speak up, they gave no concrete reasons. What seemed to bubble to the surface is that a new “vision plan” for Atlanta Public Schools is in the works and the board wants a superintendent who will follow that vision. It calls into question just how much autonomy the new superintendent will have and stokes fear of micromanaging at the board level. I’ve covered local governments for 30 years and I can tell you, that will end in tears. With graduation rates up 18 percent and vastly improved Milestone test scores, Carstarphen has righted the sinking ship that was APS in 2014. Who will guide the system next might be in for rougher waters (see related story page 7).

Topping out ceremony marks construction progress at resurrected school By Clare S. Richie
A
midst cheers and tears, alumni of the former David T. Howard High School recently joined with future students of the nearly refurbished middle school to celebrate a construction milestone at the Old Fourth Ward school campus. “This means a lot to us as alumni. This is a day we’ve been waiting for,” David T. Howard High School Alumni Association President, Gloria B. Williams said. The $52 million renovation and expansion will put students back into Martin Luther King Jr.’s alma mater more than four decades after it closed. “It’s going to be amazing,” a Hope-Hill Elementary School fifth grader said. She will attend Howard Middle School along with her Grady Cluster sixth-to-eighth grade peers in August 2020. The topping off ceremony commemorates the placement of the highest beam of the building. All attendees, such as, alumni, Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Meria Carstarphen, school board members, city council members and construction workers, were invited to sign the beam. “I cannot believe this is happening. I remember standing in the soccer field four years ago with the alumni. The school was dilapidated and closed-up. I knew it was perfect.” Carstarphen said. Thanks to the alumni, Grady Cluster, school board, taxpayers and many more – the historic school will be brought back. Howard High produced prominent graduates, including Atlanta’s first black mayor, Maynard Jackson; NBA star and basketball hall of famer, Walt “Clyde” Frazier; and the only U.S. woman to win gold in the 1956 Olympics, high jumper, Mildred McDaniel Singleton. “I’m honored next year to be the Howard Middle School principal,” Current Inman Middle School Principal Maxwell said. He praised the Parrish Construction Group workers for their skills. “It was the same kind of skill and hard work that allowed David T. Howard, a man born into slavery, to donate the land on which this school stands. It seemed this gift of land to educate children was destined to continue making history,” Maxwell said. The search is on for a new superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools after the board of education voted not to renew Meria Carstarphen’s contract on Sept. 9. The Atlanta Board of Education said it will conduct a nationwide search for a new superintendent, but the decision to oust Carstarphen, and the way it was handled, has brought mixed reactions from the community. Many parents were dismayed at the decision, while the Atlanta Federation of Teachers applauded the decision, since it had been unhappy with the superintendent’s “privatization” of APS by outsourcing the daily operations of six schools to charter groups. However, her tenure was championed by U.S. Rep. John Lewis, former mayors Shirley Franklin and Andrew Young and Meria Carstarphen the Buckhead Coalition. Atlanta School Board Chairman Jason Esteves did say how many board members were against renewing her contract, despite being confronted by parents about who was for and against the renewal. Local watchdog group Concerned Citizens for Effective Government has filed a complaint with the Georgia Attorney General’s office stating the school board violated the opening meetings act when it failed to make public the vote on renewing Carstarphen’s contract. Esteves said the school board had actually decided in July not renew Carstarphen’s contract but delayed making it public so as not to disrupt the start of the new school year. The exact reasons for the board’s decision are still unclear, with Esteves and board members declining to go into details with local media. Carstarphen said during a press call on Sept. 12 she wasn’t given a specific reason. The school board has retained a public relations firm to deal with the fallout from its decision not renew Carstarphen’s contract. Carstarphen responded to the board’s decision via her blog: “As I have expressed throughout the community for the past few months, I had a sincere desire for a contract extension so that our team and I could complete the vision and charge I was hired to achieve for the benefit of Atlanta’s children: Rebuild trust and restore pride in Atlanta Public Schools and position it for the future, especially after the largest cheating scandal in the history of public education.” Esteves said he hoped Carstarphen would remain on the job until her contract expires on June 30, 2020. Shortly after the announcement that her contract wasn’t extended, Carstarphen’s name was floated as a possibility to become the superintendent of DeKalb County Schools. Carstarphen said during the press call that she would remain focused on APS but would not discuss her future. Carstarphen, who was hired in 2014, has been both praised and vilified for her work to turn around Atlanta Public Schools in the wake of the standardized test cheating scandal. Her reputation as a no-nonsense leader has been well documented in Atlanta and in her previous superintendent postings in Austin, TX and St. Paul, MN. She was also the system’s biggest cheerleader, regularly making appearances at schools, hosting events and meeting with the media. In August, APS trumpeted improved Milestone testing scores and graduation statistics and Carstarphen celebrated the topping out of the soon-to-open Howard Middle School in the Old Fourth Ward. Principal and teacher turnover rate also stabilized under her tenure, and she persevered through an extended fight with the City of Atlanta to have old school property returned to APS.

Blank Foundation gives $17.5 million for Westside Park development

The East Atlanta Library, located at 400 Flat Shoals Ave. SE, will close to the public on Monday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. to begin extensive renovation work. The closing is part of a two-year effort to redesign and modernize 23 of Fulton County’s 34 libraries. Upgrades will include new HVAC systems, roofing, upgraded technology, improved layouts, new shelving, study rooms, ADA accessible restrooms, and more. Construction is expected to take approximately six months to complete. The Atlanta City Council approved legislation to accept grant funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation up to $2.67 million to continue construction of the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive Innovation Corridor Project. The project spans approximately 7.2 miles from Northside Drive to Fulton Industrial Boulevard and aims to make the MLK Jr. Drive corridor more pedestrian and bike friendly with improved access to the Atlanta Beltline and MARTA bus service. As part of the ongoing tower construction project, Piedmont Atlanta Hospital has deeded almost an acre of land to the city to widen Collier Road at Peachtree Road in order to improve traffic flow. The work, coming at a cost of $3.6 million, which is being funded by Piedmont, is underway and is expected to be complete early next year. Some closures are expected during construction.

By Collin Kelley The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation has awarded a $17.5 million grant to the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership to support development of Westside Park on the Atlanta BeltLine. With the first phase anticipated to open next year, Westside Park will eventually become the largest greenspace in the city, spanning approximately 280 acres when complete. The former Bellwood Quarry will be turned into a city reservoir that will hold 2.4 billion gallons of water. Joining the city’s $26.5 million investment in the first phase Westside Park, the Blank Foundation’s grant will enhance public access, neighborhood connectivity, and long-term sustainability of approximately 50 acres of the 280-acre greenspace. The grant is also the lead gift in the BeltLine Partnership’s forthcoming expanded capital campaign, and will build on the $4.1 million raised to date to support the creation of Atlanta BeltLine Interim Trails, including the recently opened 4.5 mile Southside Interim Trail. City added 10,900 new residents in last year
The City of Atlanta added 10,900 new residents in the past year, the city’s largest yearly increase this decade, according to 2019 population estimates released by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC). The city is now home to more than 470,000 people, a number not seen since the 1970s. Atlanta’s growth comes amid a surge in multifamily housing, as the city led the region in number of building permits issued in the past year. The City of Atlanta is driving the growth of Fulton County, which now has a population exceeding 1 million. The only other county to add more than 10,000 people in 2018 is Gwinnett, which gained 15,100 for a total of more than 925,000. Each of metro Atlanta’s 10 counties saw population increases in the past year, pushing the region’s total to 4.6 million. While the fastest growth rates occurred in Cherokee and Henry counties, Fulton and Gwinnett counties added the most residents. “The Atlanta region’s growth remains strong, driven by our diverse economy and great quality of life,” said Doug Hooker, Executive Director of ARC. “But to ensure our region’s future success, we must continue to invest in our region’s infrastructure and tackle key issues like housing affordability and equity.” The region’s growth rate, while still among the highest in the past decade, has slowed slightly – dropping to 1.6 percent, down from 1.8 percent in 2017 and 1.7 percent in 2018. This reflects a similar dip in employment growth.

Oct. 3, 1935: The police committee of the Atlanta City Council decided it was time for the city to have parking meters. After a few weeks, 2,000 new meters were installed in the Downtown area. The cost was nickel for one hour. Oct. 5, 1925: The Atlanta Chamber of Commerce launched the Forward Atlanta campaign to boost the city. In the next five years more than 760 businesses valued at $35 million relocated to Atlanta. Oct. 6, 1920: A fire at the Piedmont Driving Club destroyed the old New York Building designed by architect Charles Norris Hoar. It was built on the club’s property for the 1895 Cotton States and International Exhibition and used for years for balls and entertainment. Defective wiring was the cause for the blaze. ◄Oct. 12, 1958: A dynamite blast rips a gaping hole in a wall of Atlanta’s oldest reform

synagogue, The Temple. It was a warning to Jacob Rothschild, The Temple’s outspoken rabbi, who had encouraged the congregation to support integration. The bombing of The Temple on Peachtree Street outraged residents of Atlanta. Mayor William Hartsfield went immediately to the side of Rabbi Rothschild and offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to conviction. On Oct. 17, a Fulton County grand jury indicted five members of the National States Rights Party, but they were ultimately set free and the charges dropped for lack of evidence. ◄Oct. 14, 1964: Martin Luther King, Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. At age 35, he would youngest recipient of the prize. King would be presented with the award in a ceremony in Oslo, Norway on Dec. 10, 1965. The $54,000 in prize money was donated to the civil rights movement. Oct. 18, 1996: The Coca-Cola Annex Building located at 187 Edgewood Ave. was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1903, the three-story classical revival site was built to house the now defunct Coca-Cola Chewing Gum Company. In 1905 when the beverage company dropped the product it became office space for the bottling company and a highly automated factory was located in the basement where the fizzy drink was produced. Oct. 30, 1974: A groundbreaking ceremony is held in west Downtown for the Georgia World Congress Center.

These days kids are pressed early on to either be dedicated athletes or former athletes. To me it seems a big life decision for someone who still needs help cutting his waffles, but it’s just the way it is. Parents pay wads of money for expert coaching and three or four training sessions a week. (Serious practice is called “training,” by the way). Elliott played on an Academy team for one season and quickly learned he didn’t want to train that much. Nor did he relish forfeiting his entire weekend to tournaments in places like Fayetteville any more than we did. Elliott is a pretty good player, though, so I’m happy he didn’t give it up entirely. He’s back to playing at recreation level, but now we’re in a weird place where the kids know the game better than the parents. I’ll coach basketball again this winter, but, knowing my limitations, I selfdemoted to helper-dad status for soccer a few years ago. I don’t know where to lay out the cones or what they should do in and around said cones. Is emailing parents to organize post-game snacks By Tim Sullivan still a thing? I really don’t even care to know. The schedule page has the overwhelming aesthetic of the baggage claim board at Hartsfield-Jackson. Sorting through the cacophony, I noticed we are the only team with the childish inclination to still name themselves after a fierce animal. I tend to doubt “HCSA Mendez 14U-B Green” was intimidated when they saw “Vipers” on their schedule. Eytan and I have been running basketball drills in practice under the premise that proper spacing and ball control applies to both sports and we can just switch out hands for feet. This may explain why as of this writing, The Vipers are 0-2 with a goal differential of -12 but hey, look at me, I just used the term “goal differentia.l” In lieu of actual strategy, I might steal a Waffle House menu and some reader glasses to look like one of those sage NFL coaches. The other teams are bigger, stronger and when it comes to nascent facial hair, we lose in a landslide. A couple kids on our squad have never even played competitively before. One mom asked, “what are those things, you know, that go in the socks?” You mean feet? (More useless inner dialogue). Shin guards—the correct answer is shin guards. But I like our guys and we are improving. We don’t have any future MLS players, heck, we probably don’t even have anyone who will try out for their high school team in a couple years. But what we do have is perhaps a little purer than that. Kids enjoying their youth for another season, playing simply because they love the game and parents who recognize how important that is. Accolades and college scholarships may not be forthcoming but good memories and friendships are already here. Let’s call it a positive goal differential. Go Vipers.

New Kroger opens Oct. 16 as office tower signs big tenants By Collin Kelley The new Kroger supermarket at the 725 Ponce development on Ponce de Leon Avenue is set to open Oct. 16. Attached to a 12-story office building along the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail, the new two-level, 60,000-squarefoot store replaces the Kroger that was demolished in 2016. The store also has a small outdoor parking lot and its own parking deck. The mixed-used 725 Ponce project is being developed by New City. The 12-story office tower has already announced two big tenants: asset management firm BlackRock has leased 120,000-square-feet on four floors, while co-working space WeWork is taking 45,000-square-feet on two floors. Although Starbucks is rumored for the lobby, no dining options had been announced at press time. The lobby is attached to a lush, multi-level outdoor space with plenty of casual seating and a water feature that connects directly to the BeltLine. The 725 Ponce development, which sits across the Eastside Trail from Ponce City Market, is also now connected to and shares a parking lot with the historic Ford Factory Lofts building. New City is reportedly eyeing a second office tower at the 725 Ponce site due to the interest level and lease activity that’s already taken place at the development.

Dubbed the CARE Atlanta Global Innovation Hub, it sits at the intersection of social impact, innovation and justice. “To me this is a starting point for Atlanta to really embody the ecosystem that is here and to bring it together in powerful way that I hope that we can grow from. In fact, we want to grow and invite other partners into this initiative,” CARE USA CEO Michelle Nunn said at the Sept. 5 ribbon cutting ceremony. With support from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, the ~20k sq/ft renovation includes private offices, co-working spaces, meeting space, events space and a café concept. “CARE saw an opportunity to be much more present in the surrounding community,” Innovation Hub Executive Director Ryan Shepard said. The Innovation Hub seeks to facilitate collaboration among activists, artists, thinkers and movement builders to explore, test, and scale new solutions. For starters, CARE USA will incubate a pilot of the Village Savings and Loans program in Clarkston and Atlanta to reach refugee, immigrant and low socio-economic status populations. “It’s a model we’ve been really effective in helping to grow all over the world. The idea is to figure out what it would take to get Americans to a place of being financially solvent – see a pathway to access capital they need to live out their dreams in a healthy and productive way,” Shepard said. In addition, the Innovation Hub will focus on Community & Culture, Events & Experiences, and Support & Services. “When you look at any social justice movement – art and culture are at the front lines. We want to show the beauty, coping and resilience of people on the continent. The hope is to build traction for new African designers and artists here. Ours is a start up, just like the Innovation Hub, “Anja said. Shepard’s team is also launching a quarterly Experience Series for a small group to go deep on a topic. The October experience led by the Equal Justice Initiative
will take place over two days with a trip to Montgomery and a closing session at the hub. “When people think of this Innovation Hub, we what them to think of cool exciting events, something that blows the old-school panel out of the water,” Shepard said. Emerging nonprofits can now also look to CARE as a mentor. “When you look at CARE’s broad reach and massive infrastructure, there’s a really cool opportunity to make that available for organizations that share our values,” Shepard said. The global nonprofit works in more than 90 countries, supporting nearly 1,000 poverty-fighting development and humanitarian-aid projects. Six anchor partners – aKAZ!ATL, Black Feminist Future, Candid., EARTH University, Girls Going Global and Café Casa – have already moved in and begun collaborating with CARE USA and one another. “We have these extraordinary partners that I think are demonstrative of the dynamism and creativity in Atlanta,” Nunn said. Candid., the nonprofit formed by the joining together of the philanthropy resource Foundation Center and nonprofit resource GuideStar formerly housed in the Georgia-Pacific building, will now offer classes for nonprofits at the Innovation Hub in addition to other places like local libraries. Real estate investment and management firm JLL has officially launched the marketing for a Transit Oriented Development (TAD) for the 1.5 acre site at Ponce de Leon Avenue, West Peachtree Street and North Avenue. A JLL team comprised of Scott Cullen, Mark Lindenbaum, and Jeremy Becker are handling the marketing, developer selection and transaction process for MARTA. “MARTA has considered TOD at this station for several years. We have a lot of faith in the long-term momentum of Midtown and are pleased to make this site available for development,” said MARTA’s Jacob Vallo. Midtown poised for two more mixed-use towers By Collin Kelley Plans for Midtown Union, a mixed-use development slated to become the world headquarters of investment management company Invesco, received approval on Sept. 10 from the Midtown Development Review Committee (DRC). The development will sit 3.8 acres at 1295 Spring Street with Granite Properties as the master developer and Street Lights Residential delivering the apartment component. A hotel is also planned for the site. After working with committee members to resolve several outstanding issues such as parking deck screening, public art and street level façade enhancements, the DRC recommended conditional support for the project. Old Lindridge-Martin Manor apartments to get big renovation Tenth Street Ventures and Braden Fellman Group bought multiple apartment buildings in LindridgeMartin Manor neighborhood with plans to create a unified community by rebranding them as one garden style apartment complex called The Piet. The exterior, to be painted by artist Chastain Bernard will be inspired by the neoplasticism movement with visual compositions of vertical and horizontal shapes using only black, white and primary colors to simplify and unify the buildings’ exteriors. In the nearly $42 million transaction,
TSV & BFG bought 13 buildings from multiple owners, totaling 335 units over 12.5 acres. Anchored by the 2175 Lenox Road NE building, the team also plans to connect the 1960s- and 1970s-era buildings with walking trails, two pools, several dog parks, more than a dozen grill stations, bocce ball courts and putting greens. TSV is working on raising new funds from investors for other similar investments this fall. TSV has been focusing on buying older buildings in popular Intown neighborhoods then either renovating to sell as condos or lease as apartments. In the spring, TSV opened Studio9Forty, an apartment project just blocks from Piedmont Park, which offers residents the option to Airbnb their units. In Buckhead, TSV renovated older buildings to develop Portico, where people can buy large, 2-bedroom condos for as low as $275,000. Also in Midtown, TSV recently purchased an apartment complex on Crescent Street at 13th Street that
includes Tin Lizzy’s and Sutra Lounge and 14 units above creating a new type of mixed-use project. TSV and BFG purchased three Decatur apartment complexes, including Adair Oaks, and plan to renovate the 100+ units using a protégé of Ryan Gainey, the renowned landscape
architect who called Decatur home and had lived one street over. Cooper Sanchez will work on the landscape design and art for the exterior using Gainey’s essential design philosophies.

City of Refuge held out a topping ceremony last month for The 1300: A Beloved Inspired Community. The 60,000-square-foot affordable housing community is currently under construction and slated for completion later this year. The new apartment community will serve local residents as well as students who are engaged in City of Refuge’s collection of vocational training programs. Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Celebrates Silver Anniversary By Sally Bethea On June 26, 1994, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution published the first part of a series called “Troubled Waters – The strangling of the Chattahoochee.” A sub-title for one of the pieces in the multi-page spread announced: “A sick river runs through it: human filth chokes the Chattahoochee, Atlanta’s primary waterway. One reason – the city has one of the worst sewer systems in the country.” Four months earlier, a new nonprofit organization, then called Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and now Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK), had officially embarked on its daunting mission to clean up the river with a goal of ensuring enough clean water for people and wildlife. Following the lead of a dozen other “waterkeeper” organizations in a new movement, CRK’s co-founders, Laura Turner Seydel and Rutherford Seydel, chose an individual to serve as the group’s first “riverkeeper.” Incredibly, they took a chance on me – a gift that dramatically changed my life, challenging me personally and professionally in ways that I could never have anticipated. A review of Watershed
O
ne of the oldest questions in Western Fried chicken & biscuits Hot milk cake metaphysics, pondered by Plato and other ancient Greeks, is an identity problem known as the ship of Theseus. Suppose that Theseus, founder and heroic king of Athens, retired his battleship to a museum. Over time, the ship would decay and its parts By Megan Volpert would need replacing. Eventually, the entire ship would be reconstructed with replacement parts. Can we still say that the thing in the museum is the ship of Theseus? Fellow Atlantans, this is also the question posed to us by Watershed. After it opened in its first location in 1999, it quickly became a beloved spot in Decatur. Owners Ross Jones and Emily Saliers even scored a James Beard Award and are credited as early promoters of the now commonly understood virtues of a farm-to-table menu. Their elevated Southern fare was nicely balanced out by the mystique of excellence surrounding their once-a-week fried chicken Megan Volpert lives special. The server who waited on our table has been at Watershed for twenty years. He’s seen it through all the changes and the hospitality at the core of their dining room is as good as it ever was—neighborly and helpful. A restaurant that can keep a server for twenty years is a place worth visiting. And the Matt Marcus menu iteration still includes the two dishes that diehard Watershed fans always get: the fried chicken and the hot milk cake. Those are both still made the way Ross Jones’s grandma always made them. In fact, though the fried chicken is still served in moderately exclusive quantities, you can find it there a few more nights per week than before. This year, Atlanta’s own Yacht Rock Revue will give a concert on Saturday at Historic Fourth Ward Park Concert goers will dance the night away to the smooth-sailing sounds of the ‘70s and ‘80s – think Hall & Oates, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald and Toto – and a few Halloween tunes, too. Costumes are encouraged and there will be food trucks if you get hungry (no outside food or beverage is allowed). But before the music starts, there’s a whole weekend of food, beer and wine to enjoy at the park, as well. More than 100 of Atlanta’s favorite restaurants will show off their most famous dishes alongside live on-stage cooking demos from top chefs, hands-on cooking classes, a Friday Night Opening Party, a Saturday night concert and more. Festival hours are 7:30 to 11 p.m. for the Opening Night Party, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Gates open for the concert at 7 p.m. Individual tickets to Friday’s all-inclusive Opening Night Party are $75 in advance and $85 at the door. Through A Southern Lens Sally Mann retrospective comes to the High Oct. 19 By Collin Kelley
T
he High Museum has been scoring some serious exhibitions the last two years – Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Mirrors” and “European Masterworks” from The Phillips Collection – and another is on the way: a retrospective of celebrated American photographer Sally Mann. “A Thousand Crossings,” which opens Oct. 19 and continues to Feb. 2, will feature more than 100 images made by the often controversial photographer. Her black and white photography, which includes the 19th century “wet plate” process, explores memory, desire, death, the bonds of family and nature’s indifference to human endeavor. A native of Virginia, Mann has long written about what it means to live in the South and be identified as a Southerner. The exhibition investigates how her relationship with her native land—as place and source of identity, with a rich literary and artistic tradition and a troubled history—has shaped her photographs. By incorporating a deep love of the South with her knowledge of its historically fraught heritage, Mann creates photographs that prompt powerful, provocative questions about history, identity, race and religion. Organized into five sections — family, landscape, battlefields, legacy and mortality—and featuring many works not previously exhibited, the exhibition is both a sweeping overview of Mann’s artistic achievement over the past four decades and a focused exploration of how the South emerges in her work as a powerful and provocative force that continues to shape American identity and experience. The exhibition is organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Peabody Essex Museum. The exhibition is co-curated by the High’s new Donald and Marilyn Keough Family Curator of Photography Sarah Kennel (previously with the Peabody Essex Museum), who developed the project with Sarah Greenough, senior curator of photographs at the National Gallery. “I’m thrilled to launch my tenure at the High with ‘A Thousand Crossings,’ an exhibition that is not only dear to my heart, but also makes perfect sense for the museum, which awarded Sally Mann the first ‘Picturing the South’ commission in 1996. Mann’s drive to ask the big questions—about love, death, war, race and the fraught process of growing up—coupled with her ability to coax powerful emotional resonances from the materials of her art make her one of today’s most compelling artists.”

The Atlanta Celebrates Michael Stipe Photography festival is back and bringing both international and local photographers together for exhibitions, master classes, lectures and more. Many of the ACP festival exhibitions actually opened at local galleries in September, but the bulk of the events are happening in October, including marquee speaker Michael Stipe. The REM frontman will discuss his cross-medium work that incorporates photography, video, soundscape and sculpture and his latest book “Our Interference Times.” Stipe will speak Oct. 2, 7 p.m. at SCADShow in Midtown. This year’s ACP festival spotlights the influence of fashion and its power as a communicative form, whether in the work of noted fashion photographers and designers like Juergen Teller and Karl Lagerfeld or in the street photography of Amy Arbus. The 21st annual event will also feature “The Fence,” a more than 700 foot long exhibit of 40 photographers from around the world along the Atlanta BeltLine. “ACP Open Exhibition” in partnership with Fulton County Arts Council at the Abernathy Center for the Arts is an opportunity for any photo fan to display their work in a pin-up show juried by photographer and Savannah College of Art and Design professor Forest McMullin. Prizes are awarded in 10 categories. Now in its 8th year, “Teen Spirit” is an opportunity for teenagers experiencing chronic illness to use photography as a means of expression and escape. Patients at Scottish Rite and Egleston Hospital will exhibit work at Mason Fine Art and Events. Longtime Atlanta and now NYC-based photographer Chris Verene will be featured in a solo photo exhibit at Marcia Wood Gallery, while Atlanta-based photographer Kate T. Parker will speak about her bestselling book “Strong is the new Pretty.” The daughter of celebrated photographer Diane Arbus and a remarkable talent in her own right, Amy Arbus will focus her lecture on portraits that move her and the stories they tell. Regal Atlantic Station to get immersive 4DX cinema Regal Atlantic Station has announced a serious upgrade, including the region’s first 4DX immersive movie theatre. Developed in South Korea, the 4DX theatre will include motion-enabled chairs, environmental controls for simulated weather and other conditions, and scent modules, which will be fully synchronized to the movie’s storyline to mimic what the characters see, feel and smell in real time. Other changes coming to the Regal include the conversion of four auditoriums to its VIP format, offering plush, electric recliners, a remodeled façade and signage, enhanced concession area and a new “arrival experience replacing the current ticket window. Officials said the cinema will remain open during the expansion and renovation.

It was almost a full REM reunion on Sept. 13 at the Fox Theatre as Bill Berry, Peter Buck and Mike Mills took the stage as part of “Revival,” a benefit concert for the Fox Theatre Institute, which aids in the preservation of small theaters across Georgia. The evening also featured performances by Drivin N Cryin, Drive-By Truckers, Michelle Malone, Dodd and The Councilmen and other special guests. The event raised more than $20,000 for the Institute.
