For whom the Bell’s Palsy tolls
On the morning of Aug. 11, I woke up to find the right side of my face was paralyzed. This discovery wasn’t immediate. I checked email, returned a work-related phone call and then went into the kitchen to make a smoothie. It’s when I took a drink and half the smoothie ran down my chin that I realized something was wrong. I went into the bathroom to look in the mirror and upon first glance, nothing seemed amiss. Then I opened my mouth – or tried to. Both my upper and bottom lip were paralyzed, which meant I couldn’t smile. I also noticed that I was no longer able to raise my right eyebrow. When I closed my eyes, the right eyelid wouldn’t close tightly nor would it blink, and even my nose seemed slightly off symmetry. I thought I’d had a stroke overnight and went into panic mode. I called one of my best friends, who happens to be a nurse, and she encouraged me to go directly to the hospital. My friend Karen, who lives a few minutes away, also urged to me get to the emergency room and offered to leave work and drive me. My mother was the first to suggest that it might be Bell’s Palsy, since both my father and one of my aunts had been afflicted with it. Since I wasn’t in any pain, didn’t feel dizzy or ill, I drove myself up the street to Atlanta Medical Center. Upon entering the ER and showing them my face paralysis, they Collin Kelley instantly whisked me back to an examination room and hooked up collin@atlantaintownan EKG. In just a couple of hours, I would have both a CAT scan and paper.com MRI (I’m not claustrophobic, but I can see how that machine freaks people out). Then there was a couple of hours of waiting around for NOV. 12 • DEC. 10 the results, a consultation with a neurologist who ruled out a stroke and finally getting the diagnosis that it was indeed Bell’s Palsy. Maybe. “It looks like Bell’s Palsy,” was what the ER doctor said and wrote prescriptions for a round of antivirals and steroids, the only medication known to help Bell’s Palsy. Maybe. Designed for little kids, big kids, and the whole family, Second Sundays are If you’re wondering why all the maybes, it’s because not very much is known about Bell’s for everyone. Visit us each month and experience new interactive, innovative Palsy other than it’s a swelling of the facial nerve (also known as the seventh cranial nerve) that family activities inspired by our collections and ever-changing exhibitions. might be caused by a strain of the herpes virus or by the virus that causes chicken pox. Pregnant Second Sundays are sponsored by the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation. women and those with diabetes also seem more prone to Bell’s Palsy, but they don’t know why. While most cases of Bell’s Palsy correct themselves anywhere from three weeks to three months – or maybe six – sometimes there is lingering paralysis. The doctor also warned me, my facial featured listing from paralysis might become worse before it got better. He was right. o u r 2017_3.325x4.5.indd n e i g h b o r h o o d1 e x p e r t w i t h g l o b a l r e10/30/17 ach anta Intown yNovDec 2:09 PM A few days later, the right side of my face looked like a melted candle. My mouth was constantly dry, as were my eyes. My nose felt stuffed up and I had slurred speech. Drinking without a straw was impossible; more food seemed to wind up on my shirt than in my mouth. I didn’t leave my house except for quick errands and doctor appointments for a few weeks. Three months later, I am almost recovered, but not quite. My lower lip is still a little frozen and while my right eye closes and blinks, it still won’t close tightly. My doctor says this will eventually return to normal – or it might not. It’s maddening how little is known about Bell’s Palsy. Both Angelina Jolie and George Clooney have had bouts of Bell’s, so you’d think there would be foundation or telethon to raise funds for ongoing research into prevention and cure. Maybe Sarah McLachlan could sing a heartrending cover of The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” while holding a rescued puppy for the television campaign?
Enjoy free admission and special programs from 1 to 4 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month.

Westside Trail
Atlanta BeltLine opens new three-mile segment
T
he Atlanta BeltLine Westside Trail has officially opened to the public with a new three-mile corridor that runs from Washington Park to Adair Park in Southwest Atlanta. The new trail features 14 access points, public art and greenway. Of the 14 access points, 11 entrances are ADA accessible – representing more accessibility than any other trail in the city. “Today is a good day in the City of Atlanta as we celebrate a promise kept with the opening of the new Westside Trail,” said Mayor Kasim Reed during last month’s ribbon cutting. “The trail connects some of the city’s most important and historic neighborhoods in a new way while honoring them with such a valuable and significant investment.” The Westside Trail is the largest expansion of the Atlanta BeltLine since its inception. The amenity connects four schools, four parks and a dozen Westside neighborhoods. “We are proud to celebrate this significant milestone in the Atlanta BeltLine’s history – the opening of the Westside Trail,” said BeltLine CEO Brian McGowan. “This trail will have a transformative effect on the city and will foster new jobs, promote business creation and ensure livable communities in Southwest Atlanta. As we continue to build upon this amenity, we are 100 percent committed to working with the community to identify the unique needs that must be built in our planning as much as our concrete trails are.” – Photos by Asep Mawardi

BeltLine buys property to complete Eastside Trail

By Collin Kelley The Atlanta BeltLine announced that it has purchased 13 acres between Rock Springs Road and Mayson Street, which will complete the Eastside Trail of the 22-mile loop. The purchase price was $460,000, according to a media release. The property, part of the former rail corridor owned by Norfolk Southern, crosses over the Buford Spring Connector and under I-85 before connecting with Mayson Street. The .25 mile extension takes the Eastside Trail to the Armour Drive area, which is undergoing a renaissance with new business, restaurants and retail. New lighting along the southern extension of the Eastside Trail. Purchase of the property was supported by a loan from The Conservation Fund, which will be paid back with funding from the T-SPLOT (transportation – special local option sales tax). A construction timeline was not announced, but BeltLine officials said it would not begin until design and full funding is secured for the project. Meanwhile, officials opened the southern extension of the Eastside Trail in a ceremony on Nov. 3. The addition runs for one mile from the previous terminus at Irwin Street south to the new terminus at Kirkwood Avenue. This new segment includes sensor lights and seven cameras integrated into the Atlanta Police Department’s Video Integration System (VIC). Funding for the southern extension of the Eastside Trail comes from the BeltLine Tax Allocation District, Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, The Kendeda Fund and Waterfall Foundation. Going Underground Developer updates plans for Downtown redevelopment
ON THE AGENDA MEETINGS The Atlanta City Council meets Nov. 6 and Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. at City Hall, 55 Trinity Ave. Information: citycouncil. atlantaga.gov. The Atlanta School Board meets Nov. 6 and Dec. 4 at 2:30 p.m. for presentations and for a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. at 130 Trinity Ave. Information: atlantapublicschools.us. The Decatur City Commission meets in open session on the first and third Mondays of each month at City Hall, 509 North McDonough Street, at 7:30 p.m. NEWS The Atlanta City Council voted unanimously to dramatically reduce the penalty ($75) for marijuana possession and make it a non-arrestable offense. The removal of 250 trees from Grant Park has been put on hold while residents and the city look for a compromise to save some of the greenery. The trees would be cut down for the Grant Park Gateway - a parking structure topped with a restaurant and greenspace.
South Carolina-based developer WRS has released a block-by-block update about its plans for transforming Underground Atlanta in Downtown. Since buying the 9-acre Underground site from the City of Atlanta in late March, WRS has been busy securing student and multifamily housing partners, relocating tenants from the original Underground mall for a structural assessment, finalizing an agreement with The Masquerade to stay Downtown and begin next steps with architectural plans and construction. “After our first six months of ownership we’re ready to start sharing details,” said WRS partner Scott Smith. “To be able to confirm housing options for both students and those working in Atlanta was extremely important. Couple that with our need to attract the creative class and the confirmation that The Masquerade has inked a multi-year deal and Post-Office Cowork launched in October, sets the tone for other early adopters to join the redevelopment.” A current block-by-block snapshot of the redevelopment includes:
Block 1: Northwest corner of Pryor and Upper Alabama
Higher density hotel, office, retail and additional housing will be the last phase of the four-block transformation.
Block 2: Northeast corner of Pryor and Upper Alabama
Featuring student housing from development partner Peak Campus and multi-family housing from partner Prestwick Companies, more than 800,000 square feet of new construction will begin on this block in fall 2018, with an estimated delivery date of
fall 2020 and early 2021 respectively. Both buildings will feature a mix of street-level retail focused on the needs of the neighborhood and Georgia State University’s growing student body. Between block 1 and 2 there will be nearly 175 thousand square feet of retail space to add neighborhood necessities and conveniences to the mix.
Block 3: Southwest Corner of Central and Alabama
Filled with a mix of retail, office and communal areas to support a 24/7 lifestyle, a more extensive rehabilitation of older buildings and other existing structures of Block 3 will begin in early spring 2018. The lower level of Underground Atlanta closed on Aug. 13 to assess the condition of the central hub, utility set up and structural safety. Block 3 is also the permanent home of The Masquerade and the recently announced coworking pop-up Post-Office Cowork at 86 Pryor Street.
The Masquerade makes Underground its permanent home
The Atlanta City Council approved an extension on a moratorium to prohibit any structural alterations or demolition at the historic Pratt-Pullman Yard in Kirkwood. The site is up for landmark district designation.
8 November 2017 |
More than 40 thousand square feet of retail storefronts line Upper Alabama to Peachtree Street and currently house many long-term Underground Atlanta tenants who relocated from the now-closed lower level to continue day-to-day business above ground. To follow updates on the transformation of Underground Atlanta visit wrsrealestate.com/ underground-atlanta.
Let the Music Play
The DeKalb County Commission approved a resolution calling for the county’s legal team to render an opinion on the legality of removing The Lost Cause Confederate monument from the Decatur square.
The City of Atlanta has earned another perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2017 Municipal Equality Index for LGBTQ citizens. This is the fifth consecutive perfect score earned by Atlanta, the only city in Georgia to receive a perfect score.
Block 4: Southwest corner of Pryor and Alabama
Music venue The Masquerade announced last month that it has inked a long-term deal with Underground Atlanta to make the Downtown site its permanent home.
The Masquerade’s owners said in a media announcement that it had entered into a binding deal with WRS, Inc., the South Carolina development company, which recently purchased Underground
with plans to turn into a mixed-use development. The move to Underground was thought to be temporary, after The Masquerade left its original home at the old Excelsior Mill on North Avenue (which is also becoming a mixed-use development) a year ago. A staple on the music scene for nearly 30 years, The Masquerade had planned to open in a new location on the Westside, but the deal fell through when a residential developer filed suit to block the venue. The Masquerade moved to Underground’s Kenny’s Alley while it searched for a permanent home, but the uptick in attendance and band bookings in the new location prompted a rethink about making the temporary home permanent. Nearby parking decks, access to MARTA and the proximity of the Downtown Connector also played a role in The Masquerade’s decision to stay at Underground. The owners said patrons would soon notice upgrades to the venue – famous for its Heaven, Purgatory and Hell levels – and more announcements would be forthcoming as plans grow and develop. Election Day Run-offs expected in contested city races
By Collin Kelley Atlanta voters will be heading to the polls on Nov. 7 to elect a new mayor, city council members and school board members. With multiple contenders in nearly all the municipal races, picking a winner may come down to run-off elections on Dec. 5. The most watched and hotly contested race is for mayor of the City of Atlanta with 12 candidates on the ballot: Peter Aman, Rohit Ammanamanchi, Keisha Lance Bottoms, John Eaves, Vincent Fort, Kwanza Hall, Carl Jackson, Laban King, Ceasar Mitchell, Mary Norwood, Cathy Woolard and Glenn S. Wrightson. Three current city councilmembers – C.T. Martin, Felicia Moore and Alex Wan – are vying to become the new Atlanta City Council President since Ceasar Mitchell is in the mayoral race. Atlanta City Council Dist. 1 incumbent Carla Smith will face Ron Aribo, Oz Hill, Mo Ivory and Bill Powell. District 2 contenders to replace Kwanza Hall include Amir Farokhi, Stephon Ferguson, Zelda Jackson, Nick Mulkey and Lauren Welsh. Atlanta City Council Dist. 3 incumbent Ivory Lee Young also faces challengers, including Ricky Brown, Greg Clay and Darrion Fletcher. Dist. 4 incumbent Cleta Winslow will square off against MR Adassa, Christopher Brown, Dan Burroughs and Jason Dozier. Dist. 5 incumbent Natalyn Archibong has only one challenger, Liliana Bakhtiari. Atlanta City Council Dist. 6 candidates are Jennifer Ide and Kirk Rich, who will vie for Alex Wan’s seat, while Dist. 7 incumbent Howard Shook will face Rebecca King. In Dist. 8, incumbent Yolanda Adrean decided not to run, so the race goes down to J.P. Matzigkeit and Anna Tillman. There’s a crowded field for the Dist. 9 seat including Kwama Abernathy, William Harrison, Dustin Hills, Gabriel Lavine, Angela Moss, Duvwon Robinson and Jared Samples. Intown Coyotes
A coyote in Piedmont Park. Photo by Larry Wilson
Organization works to erase misconceptions about wildlife By Clare S. Richie Yes, that probably was a coyote you saw at dusk in Piedmont Park. This could be the same animal previously spotted near The Carter Center, who may have used The Path or Atlanta BeltLine to arrive in the park. Are you curious or concerned? Either way, the Atlanta Coyote Project is here to explain how we can co-exist peacefully. “These are really interesting, smart animals that are not out to do us harm. As a biologist, I would encourage people to appreciate them as you do all wildlife. We owe it to other species to share the planet with them,” Atlanta Coyote Project co-founder Dr. Chris Mowry said. The Atlanta Coyote Project consists of scientists and students primarily from Berry College and Emory University. The project’s work includes public education, a centralized database of Atlanta coyote sightings, activity and incidents, and peer-reviewed, scientific research. In 2014, 2,000 metro Atlanta residents responded to the project’s survey about human-coyote interactions. More than threequarters of the respondents expressed concern for their pets’ safety. However, less than three percent reported a verifiable incident of an injured or killed pet. “The number one misconception is that coyotes are dangerous to people and pets. They are shy, very secretive animals. Cats are
not natural prey items for coyotes. That would have to be a learned behavior and there are plenty of other things out there for coyotes to eat,” Mowry said, noting that pet owners should still bring their animals inside at night to be safe. Actual human attacks reported were almost non-existent. By contrast, every day nearly 1,000 people in the U.S. are treated in emergency rooms for dog bites. Did you know that any coyote captured by a trapper will be euthanized and that killing coyotes will actually increase their numbers? It sounds counterintuitive, but it’s true. Territorial by nature, coyotes occupy an area where their needs are met. Killing a coyote creates a vacancy that a transient in search of territory will fill. With less competition, more food is available to the new occupant and enables more pups to survive, thus setting in motion a vicious cycle of trapping followed by repopulation. “When you trap and kill, coyotes respond with larger litter sizes and so you’ll end up with more coyotes,” Mowry said. Tragically, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) launched the “Georgia Coyote Challenge” last March in a misguided attempt to reduce state coyote numbers, Mowry said. Georgians were encouraged to hunt coyotes. This killing contest was announced two weeks before it went into effect with no public comment. There was immediate public outcry about animal cruelty and public safety concerns.
“People may not understand firearm regulations and may take shots at coyotes in more urban areas,” Mowry said. Plus, there is little or no hard data that coyotes significantly impact wildlife species. In fact, DNR’s own website stated that the presence of coyotes in an ecosystem “proves to be an asset in maintaining the balance of wildlife in Georgia.” For instance, coyotes can help keep the rodent population down. This challenge is more likely to increase the coyote population over time. The Atlanta Coyote Project urges Georgians to reach out to Gov. Nathan Deal and elected state officials to end the program and initiate legislation to stop future wildlife killing contests. “Coyotes are here because humans wiped out red wolves. That paved the way for coyotes to move in. It’s a smaller animal with a broader diet (small mammals, fruit, and insects). They are here to stay. Trying to eradicate them is futile. But they are only going to produce the offspring that the environment can support,” Mowry said. Intown residents can co-exist peacefully with coyotes by keeping their diet limited to the natural world. Don’t feed your pets outside, secure your garbage and compost, and avoid overflowing bird feeders that attract chipmunks and squirrels that coyotes feed on. On the rare occasion of a coyote that is
too close to your home – make loud noises, squirt them with a water hose or install motion detector lights. If we are proactive and “keep pets inside at night and don’t let coyotes get access to our food, they will control their own numbers. But it does take cooperation throughout the community,” Mowry said. To learn more about coyotes, oppose the DNR Georgia Coyote Challenge, document a coyote sighting, or making a donation, visit atlantacoyoteproject.org.

I’m With The Band: Confessions of a Parent Kristen and I really like a musician named Kevin Devine. He looks like a composite sketch of all the Irish kids from the Bronx that I knew at basketball camp when I was a teenager: skinny, tough, sandy-red hair and a wispy orange beard. He pairs sharp, smart lyrics with catchy hooks and the couple times we’ve seen him play live we’ve wondered how is By Tim Sullivan this guy not more well-known? I’m not saying he has a chip on his shoulder about it, but he tours as Kevin Devine and The G--damn Band so perhaps that’s the case? Tim Sullivan grew up in a large family in the Naturally every Northeast and now lives time Kristen and I with his small family see a Kevin Devine in Oakhurst. He can lookalike around be reached at tim@ town we race to sullivanfinerugs.com. come up with a clever nickname. Like one time in the supermarket we spotted Kevin Devine and the G--damn Iceberg Lettuce. Another time he passed us on the highway and it was Kevin Devine and The G--damn HOV Lane. It’s fun stuff so feel free to play along.
TIMMY DADDY
But when Kristen left for a five-day conference in San Diego last month, the game playing was put on hold because A) I had to get these kids from a Monday morning to a Friday evening ALL BY MYSELF and B) playing the Kevin Devine game solo isn’t quite as much fun anyway. I had a complex, too, because the week prior, Mrs. Harber relayed that Margo was tossed the Question Ball in morning CREW at school and had to answer whatever question her thumb was on: What is the worst punishment you ever had? Apparently my sweet daughter tossed back her head laughing and announced, “My parents are so lazy. They never punish us!” So as 50 percent of Team Lazy I wasn’t feeling all that confident I could handle all the household demands. And really if we are being completely honest, I may be closer to 40 percent. Waking the kids for school is never easy but being the sole shepherd for the dressing, brushing, eating, packing and exiting the house is intense. And that’s got nothing on the evening slate. It starts with the traffic gauntlet I battle through to fetch both kids from their respective afterschool programs. Then the dinner, homework, bathing and bedtime routines are crammed into a blitzkrieg two-

hour window. And since I’ve already established that I’m being forthright, the bathing became pretty much optional until mommy got back…. Because it’s not just those tasks that need completing to keep the wheels turning around here. There are dishes to be done and laundry to be cycled through and lunches to be made for the next day. That week I was basically the taskmaster. I could have been sold on the QVC network for $19.99. And aack!!! what about the poor dog? She could use a walk, too. If the real Kevin Devine showed up at my door I wouldn’t even have had it in me to think of something clever. I’d probably have been like, “Dude, do you like dogs?” Kristen came home late Friday night to find me, the kids and the dog all piled into Margo’s bed. The house was still
standing and the dishes were in or near the sink. The mountain of laundry was actually clean but we saved the folding for mommy. I didn’t want her to think the household runs better while she’s gone, right? That would be totally awkward. Saturday night Kristen and I saw a fantastic band called Manchester Orchestra at the Tabernacle. The lead singer, Andy Hull, and a few other members have a side project called Bad Books with, you guessed it, Kevin Devine. We had hopes Kevin would make a guest appearance onstage, but that didn’t happen. As a consolation I’m sure we could have scanned the crowd and found Kevin Devine and The G--damn Something or Other but it didn’t matter. It just felt awfully good to be getting back to normal.

Resilient Atlanta
Building an equitable future for the city Atlanta is a city of contrasts. We are home to some of the largest corporations in the world and some of the most progressive philanthropic institutions, yet we rank among the top cities for income disparities. We have world-class colleges and universities, yet our K-12 system needs improvement. We are the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement – the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr. – yet we still struggle with racism and By Stephanie Stuckey inequality. Only by Chief Resilience Officer, preparing Atlanta’s City of Atlanta individuals, communities, institutions, businesses and systems for the chronic stresses and acute shocks we
experience can we survive, adapt and grow as a city. Thanks to the leadership of Mayor Kasim Reed, Atlanta was selected last year to be among one hundred cities globally – spanning six continents and 48 countries – for the 100 Resilient Cities program, pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation. As our city’s Chief Resilience Officer, it’s my role to draft and implement the Resilient Atlanta strategy, which is set to launch on Nov. 2. This strategy reflects a year of tireless effort and collaboration with thousands of Atlantans. Resilient Atlanta is framed by four visions, 16 measurable targets and nearly 60 concrete and deliverable actions. It seeks to: • Preserve and celebrate who we are; • Enable all Metro Atlantans to prosper; • Build our future city today; and • Design our systems to reflect our values. Our strategy is a holistic roadmap with initiatives that maximize the city’s assets, like strengthening Atlanta’s arts and culture sectors to promote economic development, connecting Metro Atlantans to new careers and skill development opportunities, as well as revamping city policies and systems to encourage civic participation from all residents. Other such comprehensive projects abound, many of which leverage the good work already being done by our partners in the public and private sectors. In the coming months and years, we’ll be laser-focused on implementation. In fact, several initiatives are already underway, including Atlanta’s first food forest, an affordable housing assessment, developing a 100% Clean Energy Plan (add your voice at 100ATL. com) and improved access to non-auto transportation options, like the Proctor Creek Greenway under construction. We know that our success will not be measured only by how well we plan but also by how well we act to positively impact the lives of all Metro Atlantans. Resilience starts with all of us. I hope our work as part of the Rockefeller Foundation network will inspire us to work together to create a world-class city of the future. Your input is important and will continue to shape the Strategy and Actions in the years ahead. Please review and reflect upon our Strategy at ResilientAtlanta.com. Beloved Virginia-Highland shop marks 40th anniversary
Fair Trade By Grace Huseth
Shops and boutiques in Virginia-Highland have come and gone over the years, but Ten Thousand Villages VaHihasisstood alternative one has seen enduring prosperity. Highlandin Woodworking strong on North to e-commerce Highland Avenue for nearly 40 years by staying true to their niche industry. The shop, originally known as Highland Hardware, was created by husband and wife team Chris and Sharon Bagby in 1978. The hardware store evolved over the years to become the go-to spot for dedicated woodworkers. The store moved to its current location on North Highland in 1984 and had expanded to more than 8,000 square feet by 1995. In 2006, the local hardware store with a woodworking obsession officially became Highland Woodworking to reflect the Bagby’s dedication to the art of working with wood. In such a specialized industry, Highland Woodworking does generate most of its business from website and catalog sales. However, cyber shopping will never be able to compare to the in-shop experience. “When customers from our website happen to be in Atlanta, this is a star attraction for them. The moment they walk in, it’s a woodworking toy store,” said Molly Bagby, marketing manager. Molly Bagby, daughter of the store’s founders, grew up at Highland Woodworking. She is now editor of Wood News Online and Highland Woodturner where she shares wood-making projects and stories. Through open submission, anyone can submit a woodworking story for publication. Bagby then rewards the featured woodworker with not only fame, but also store credit to Highland Woodworking and its many classes. The most popular woodworking class is a two-day basic woodworking class in which participants build a box. The box may be small, and yet the process of making the keepsake teaches all the basics in both hand and power tools while providing a taste of the mindset of a woodworker. “Woodworking takes a lot of patience,” Bagby said. “A big part of it, especially with hand tool woodworking, is having sharp tools. They teach how to sharpen tools and that

takes the majority of the few hours because you don’t want to use a dull tool.” More specialized classes include woodturning, which uses a wood lathe to cut symmetrical shapes with the same gentle touch used on a pottery wheel. Learning the art of marquetry through a woodworking class teaches woodworkers how to inlay small pieces of wood to decorate a larger structure. The most advanced classes Highland Woodworking offers are monthly project-based classes that last a couple of days. The dedicated leave with new knowledge and impressive pieces such as cabinets, bookcases or Windsor chairs. As Highland Woodworking transformed from a general store to specialty store, the space evolved as well. The former garden center now is storage space for various woods, while upstairs is crammed with tools. As soon as you step through the doors, a small library serves as both a resource for woodworkers and instant inspiration. Further in, visitors will notice Chris, Molly and Sharon Bagby that Highland Woodworking is a hands-on store with demo benches throughout the shop. It’s not uncommon to see a customer take a piece of wood and start planing it while staff members circle the shop to offer advice. Past a peg wall full of hanging axes, you’ll spot photos of classes held through the years. Humbly hung among the visual history of the shop is one of President Jimmy Carter, who attended many woodworking seminars through the years. Upstairs, the main classroom has high windows that create a bright woodworking space. Workbenches on wheels make the room flexible and ready for both classes and larger seminars. Yearly conferences are a way for Highland Woodworking to keep connections with its vendors, see the latest tools and network with woodworkers and instructors. Famous instructors such as Roy Underhill, who hosts the PBS series The Woodwright’s Shop, offers demonstrations at Highland Woodworking every couple of years. Bagby has noticed that the public coming out to attend these special demonstrations is becoming more and more diverse, which makes her hopeful about the future of the woodworking world. “One really great thing is that in today’s world with the DIY movement, woodworking has become more hip,” Bagby said. “A lot of people are interested in building their own furniture and making their own way through life built by their hands.” Highland Woodworking is located at 1045 N. Fair Trade
Ten Thousand Villages in VaHi is alternative to e-commerce for the holiday shopping season By Clare S. Richie In the face of rising e-commerce, many of us still prefer local brick and mortar retail, especially when the products for sale are ethically produced and benefit women artisans who are under- or unemployed and lack other opportunities for income. Ten Thousand Villages Atlanta located on St. Charles Avenue in Virginia-Highland sells only fair trade items from the U.S. and around the world, each with its own story to tell. “We have a multisensory experience in our store. We have beautiful textiles that can be felt. We have music. We have the scent of incense, soap, coffee and chocolate. You are transported to another place, where you can see the faces of the artisans and you can feel their products,” said manager Juliet White. For holiday gift giving, check out their annual bag sale Saturday, Nov. 11. Everything you can fit in their shopping bag is 25 percent off. “It’s really when we’ll have the most in stock, so it’s a great time to shop. We have a lot of stocking stuffers, hostess gifts, office gifts, small things under $10 and $20 that are unique to Atlanta,” White said. This holiday season, Ten Thousand Villages Atlanta will carry more lines than ever. It will still feature old favorites like Creedmoor Candles, made by adults with developmental disabilities in North Carolina. You’ll also find food mixes from the Women’s Bean Project that helps chronically unemployed women in Denver – convicted felons, recovering addicts, domestic violence victims – rebuild their lives through work. Maybe you’ll pick up a felted ornament from Nepal or a religious gift for Christmas, Diwali or Hanukah. Friends Karen Gross and Marg Lambert opened the store (originally as Window to the World, later teaming up with Ten Thousand Villages national network) on the principal of fair trade, ethical production and helping women across the globe. “Two wives and mothers wanted to help wives and mothers. They looked at the challenges women were facing and they thought ‘we can do this – we have to do this.’ So they fundraised for three years and finally got enough seed money to open the store here in 1993 as a nonprofit,” White said. It’s a nonprofit social enterprise that partners with independent small-scale artisan groups, co-ops and workshops. They pay mutually agreed upon prices to the artisans, ensure that artisans have safe and healthy places to work, and emphasize sustainable environmental practices in the materials and making of products. Volunteers, who work an average of four to eight hours a month as a sales associate, unpacking orders, etc., are also critical to this effort. “It takes 30 to 40 volunteers. We currently have 18. We need more always,” White urged. Today, the store boasts products from more than 130 artisan groups in some 38 countries. “In addition to Ten Thousand Villages products we have 28 other fair trade vendors, which has allowed us to expand into food and beverage products, clothing, children’s items, music books and more,” White said. With the tremendous growth in fair trade, White chooses from about 40 fair trade producer catalogues, always considering what her customers want. “If they want more sterling silver earrings, I will find more sterling silver earrings,” White said. Ten Thousand Villages is located at 1056 St. Charles Ave. and they also have a booth at the Kudzu Antique Market in Decatur, daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visit tenthousandvillages. com/atlanta or facebook.com/ Some of the goods for sale at Ten Thousand Villages. A small wrecking ball – and glitter canons – signaled the start of work on a “reimagined” Colony Square in Midtown last month. The wrecking ball knocked out windows and took a chunk of facade out of Building 500 at the corner of 15th and Peachtree streets, which will be replaced by a six-story building with retail, restaurants, offices and FitLab, a “curated collection of boutique fitness operators.” During the groundbreaking ceremony, North American Properties presented further insight into the Colony Square redevelopment plan that will encompass more than 40,000 square feet of open community gathering places; 143,000 square feet of entertainment, retail and fitness concepts, chef-driven restaurants and Main & Main, the 28,000-squarefoot food hall; and 172,000 square feet of new office space. The first phase, opening July 4, 2018, the 50th anniversary of Colony Square’s original groundbreaking, will include street-level restaurants and retail wrapping the 100 building. The second phase, opening March 14, 2019, will feature street-level restaurants wrapping the 400 building. The third phase, opening Nov. 21, 2019, will include a luxury movie theater, Main & Main, modern office space and FitLab. “Midtown is the future and there is no better place to talk about Midtown’s future than at Colony Square, an iconic reminder of Midtown’s past,” said managing partner for North American Properties Mark Toro. “Now that Midtown has grown up to be the most desirable urban experience in the Southeast, we are turning Colony Square inside out and creating an energized streetscape that will play host to entertaining the thousands of visitors and residents that cross the destination’s path daily.” A rendering of the renovated Colony Square.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Brittany Hotlzclaw in the Amazon video.
The Georgia Department of Economic Development released a promotional video in October as part of its bid to attract Amazon’s second headquarters campus. Called “Day One,” the video and the excitement around the bid for HQ2 – as it’s been dubbed by Amazon – has many of the hallmarks for Atlanta’s bid for the 1996 Summer Olympics. In the video, state recruiter Brittany Holtzclaw delivers the state’s proposal to Amazon’s Seattle headquarters in a box emblazoned with “Georgia: #1 State For Business.” If HQ2 were to choose metro Atlanta or Georgia, it could mean a staggering $5 billion investment and 50,000 jobs. The state and city have also offered up more than
$1 billion in incentives and infrastructure improvements to sweeten the deal. Banyan Street Capital has begun redevelopment of Peachtree Center in Downtown. The district’s three-story retail center and outdoor courtyard will be rebranded as The Hub. The courtyard will be redesigned to better connect with pedestrian traffic on Peachtree Street and function as a town square with space for events, a glass-enclosed staircase connecting directly to the retail center, new lighting, reflective pools with seating and art displayed throughout. The retail center, which will debut in spring 2019, will also see changes including removal of barriers that impede pedestrian flow, upgrades to entrances, canopies, finishes and furnishings. Along with the facelift, The Hub will feature a new line-up of restaurants, shops and entertainment. Denver-based Kramer Real Estate Investments and its co-general partner H2 Capital recently acquired the W.D. Grant Building at 44 Broad Street in Downtown. The new owners have engaged real estate services firm JLL to lease, manage and restore the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Grant Building has substantial office space available, including large and small spaces and a 30,000-square-foot block on the top two floors.
A rendering of the new Anthem tower at Tech Square.
Health insurance company Anthem Inc. has announced plans to locate its 1,800-employee IT center to a new 21-story building at Tech Square in Midtown. Anthem signed a build-to-suit agreement with Portman Holdings, which will develop the 352,000-square-foot building near Georgia Tech. The new building will be located at the corners of 4th and West Peachtree Streets. It will employ 3,000 people and create 1,800 new jobs. Anthem is expected to lease the entire building.
Atlanta-based Rhen’s Nest Toy Shop has opened their second brick-and-mortar location at Ponce City Market. The shop, which also has a location in East Atlanta, specializes in unplugged toys, clothing, games, books, costumes and more. The 32-story, 620,000-square-foot Class A office building is being renovated and redesigned inside and out. The large plaza at 100 Peachtree, which is adjacent to Woodruff Park, will soon include public art installations, live entertainment and other “experiential programming,” according to a media release. Zeller is also launching a speculative office program on the third floor of 100 Peachtree, known as “Spur.” The Boston Consulting Group recently announced it will occupy two floors totaling 40,000 square feet in 100 Peachtree. Reaching musically inclined, underserved youth is the goal of Atlanta Music Project, which is on track to serve 300 youth in grades 1 through 12 at six sites around the city. Now in its eighth year, AMP provides high quality, tuition-free after school music education for symphony orchestra and choir to kids. “We go into areas that don’t have what we do – musically underserved – that’s our bread and butter,” said AMP co-founder and executive director, Dantes Rameau. “We get excited when we can help kids where the majority go to Title 1 schools.” Through a partnership with the City of Atlanta, AMP’s orchestra program serves youth at three recreation centers: Perkerson Park, Gilbert House and South Bend. The choral program, AMPlify, reaches East Lake and DeKalb County area students at Zaban Recreation Center and at The Kindezi School West in Adamsville. During the summer, AMP offers a day camp for middle and high school students plus a free concert series in the Sylvan Hills neighborhood. Top performers (from choir and orchestra) can audition for the AMP Academy to receive weekly private lessons. AMP is modeled after Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu’s youth orchestra network in Venezuela, known as El Sistema. For more than 40 years, El Sistema has provided community-based orchestra training for impoverished and underserved children. Canadian musician Dantes Rameau attended the year-long Sistema Fellows Program to learn how to replicate the El Sistema model in the U.S. “I definitely expected to start something. I knew that Atlanta had a lot of need for this kind of programing, but I also knew that it had a lot of potential for corporate support,” Rameau said. Having a free place to stay with his retired aunt and uncle in Atlanta sealed the deal. Rameau found students here were eager to commit to attending classes and rehearsing at least six hours a week in exchange for an instrument, professional instruction, homework help and a warm dinner. “Learning and performing viola with AMP means a lot to me because it gives me an opportunity show everyone what I am capable of achieving in life,” said Nyasjah Brooks, a 10th grader at Carver Early College. Brooks has been with AMP since 3rd grade. She has attended Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp on full scholarship, and was selected for the National Take-a-Stand Orchestra in Aspen where she performed under Robert Spano, conductor of the Atlanta Symphony. Brooks plans on minoring in music in college. “Those experiences are very powerful and teach our students that they can do something that is challenging and complex and navigate how to do that well. That growth mindset is very powerful,” Rameau said. The example is not lost on Brooks’ three younger siblings, who also participate in AMP. AMP can also be a pathway to college. In 2015, Clayton State University established an endowed scholarship, providing college scholarship funds for AMP students who study music there. “We have a way to tell 7, 8, 9 year olds – you can go to college for free if you work hard and you show some talent for music. I think that’s special,” Rameau said. AMP also boasts more than 50 professional musicians with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music to provide instruction on each instrument at multiple sites. Atlanta native instructors Ismail Akbar and Kevin Smith both benefited from music in their own lives. “When I was 13 I became a cello student in the Talent Development Program and received free lessons from cellists from the Atlanta Symphony. I look at my experience with AMP as ‘paying it forward’,” Akbar said. “I am also a believer of giving children At l a n t a I N t o w n Pa p e r. c o m

Key supporters, like the Abraham J. & Phyllis Katz Foundation, Bank of America, Chick-fil-A and MailChimp, agree and help cover AMP’s costs of teaching artists, instruments, concerts, curriculum, professional development and operations. “We want all parents of all backgrounds Photo by Dmitri Crowder to be salivating at the chance to have their AMP Executive Director Dantes Rameau. kid in our program,” Rameau said. By Collin Kelley Sonia Tetlow has been a constant on the Atlanta music scene since the mid-1990s, growing from an “angsty Gen-X’er” to become bassist for Cowboy Mouth, fronting beloved local band Herman Put Down the Gun, playing with Roxie Watson and carving her own path as a solo artist. On her new solo album, “Now,” Tetlow showcases her love of pop and rock – she’s an unabashed child of the 80s – with a collection of 10 songs that grew out of a moment of family crisis. The grooving, buoyant sound of the album, produced by Ben Williams, is the result of “wading through the past so you can be present and live in the moment. And embrace it.” Tetlow said the genesis of “Now” came after her father was diagnosed with dementia and then suffered a debilitating stroke. She was going back and forth from Atlanta to her native New Orleans to see her dad, which gave her plenty of time to reflect on mortality and life. Those trips home also put Tetlow in a reflective mood about her beginnings as a musician. It was a Melissa Etheridge concert at the historic Saenger Theatre in New Orleans that cemented Tetlow’s future in music. “I left that concert saying, ‘that’s what I’m going to do.’ I went and bought a guitar and a chord book and asked my friend, Brian Perry, if he wanted to be in a band.” She played around New Orleans for a couple of years while finishing college, but then heard about the growing indie scene in Atlanta spearheaded by the Indigo Girls. “I came to Atlanta and saw Kristin Hall, Wendy Bucklew, Shawn Mullins and I was blown away by the caliber of songwriters. I wanted to come to Atlanta and be a part that scene.” Atlanta gave her the opportunity to hone her skills, since she readily admits, “I didn’t know what I was doing yet.” “I was very angsty – mostly yelling versus singing. I felt confident with the lyrics, but not so much with the music. I wasn’t 21 yet, so I had to use my sister’s driver’s license to get in to the clubs. Then I got busted at Eddie’s Attic with the fake ID and they took it away.” It’s worth noting here that all has been forgiven at Eddie’s: Tetlow has since played the famed Decatur music venue many times and launched “Now” there in early November. Tetlow would eventually form the Sonia Tetlow Band (STB) and release two acclaimed albums, “Spit” in 2000 and and “Swerve” in 2001. The band didn’t last, but their swan song was pretty epic: opening for Patti Smith at the Atlanta Civic Center. After the band’s demise, Tetlow went back to working odd jobs (including plenty of manual labor jobs like window washing mansions in Buckhead) before eventually landing a more stable gig at Earthshaking Music shop. She recorded her music at home and continued to play gigs. One of those gigs would lead to filling in as bassist for alternative rock favorites Cowboy Mouth. The band invited her to become a full-time member and constant touring ensued, along with high profile gigs on the “Ellen” show, performing at the New Orleans Jazz Festival and at race car driver Danica Patrick’s wedding. She also co-wrote songs and performed on the band’s “Voodoo Shoppe” album from 2006, which was a tribute to New Orleans following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Tetlow spent three years with Cowboy Mouth, but then felt that gig had ran its course, so she came back to Atlanta and back to her job at Earthshaking Music. She would go on to form Herman Put Down the Gun and play with Roxie Watson and Paul Sanchez and the Rolling Road Show, but also decided to go back to school and get a masters degree in public health. Four of the songs that appear on “Now” were written in the backseat of her car during lunch breaks while she was on a research fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control. Tetlow has had a taste of fame, but says it was never her goal as an artist. “Fame fans the flames of ego, which is dangerous and counterproductive to an artist. My goal is to connect with people through my work and it’s easy for fame to becomes this bubble world where you’re not connecting with anyone.” The writing and recording of “Now” gave Tetlow the opportunity to reflect on past and present. “The arc of this album is about time and memory and being okay with where I am now. Music saved my life, and I still find so much joy in music. I love it so much.” For more about Sonia Tetlow, visit her website at tetlowmusic.com. At l a n t a I N t o w n Pa p e r. c o m
Artistic Expression
A.J. Jensen opens up on the art of the caricature By Grace Huseth If you’ve been to a recent festival in Piedmont Park or at Stone Mountain, you’ve probably seen caricature artist A.J. Jensen at work. His gift as a cartoonist dovetails neatly into what has become a fulltime business called The Toon Headz, the only official business devoted to caricature art in Atlanta. According to Jensen, the definition of caricature is morphing a subject using exaggeration while retaining a likeness. Exaggeration can mean stretching and pulling features or even to simplifying them. The main goal of his crazy renditions is to make them humorous, but to all maintain the essence of his subject. “Understanding likeness is generally based upon someone’s artistic experience,” Jensen said. “The majority of people expect likeness to come from what’s in front of their eye. Yet, one subject is in a vast realm of
having comparisons to millions of shapes, forms or even textures. Identifying theses comparisons allows one to broaden their experience of the humor of caricature.” Through years of practice, Jensen has learned to be fast – from cracking a few jokes to get genuine smiles to quickly picking up on prominent facial features. Some people are nervous about getting their caricature done in fear that they will turn out ugly or fat, but seeing a caricature allows people to embrace their human side, not their best side. “I respect everyone who sits down to get a caricature from me. They are putting all of those insecurities on the back burner to laugh. When I show them the drawing and they laugh at it, I know that they lifted themselves and lifted their spirits from not worrying about their looks," Jensen said. Just as caricature art saves people
from insecurities, the art saved Jensen from his own struggles. For years, he suffered from panic attacks and homebound agoraphobia. During this dark period, he learned to play the piano and to draw. Jensen started to connect with the outside world by sharing his caricature art on YouTube. He began to face his fears through exposure therapy, usually something as simple as A.J. Brandy Wednesday outside Strange Matter in Adair Park.
By Isadora Pennington “Nobody needs a pedigree to show here,” explained Brandy Wednesday, founder and creative director of StrangeMatter ATL, a pop up art space located in Adair Park. The unassuming building sits on a corner lot, and a garage door opens to reveal an expansive, open space inside. Equipped with an office, dry bar area, restrooms and storage, StrangeMatter ATL is an art space that’s primed and ready for art events. The concept is one of inclusivity within the art community, and re-imagining a traditional gallery space. It was when reading

about backyard art galleries in Juxtapoz, an art magazine, that the idea originally came about. Wednesday wanted the space to be welcoming to newcomers and experienced artists alike, and to encourage new art experiences such as her collaborative duo-style shows, which feature two artists displaying their own work as well as a piece made by both artists. An artist herself, Wednesday was pursuing her BFA in painting and drawing at the University of Georgia before she decided to relocate to Atlanta in 2009. A native of Conyers, she found a home for herself in the arts community, for a time interning at the now defunct Beep Beep gallery in Midtown. As time passed, more and more small galleries have closed, and that’s a trend that Wednesday wanted to challenge. “I felt stirred, and I wanted to be a part of a change,” she said. The art shows are carefully curated by Wednesday, who makes special effort to seek out and engage with underrepresented artists, in an effort to not only provide an outlet for their work, but also to connect them with other artists and members of the community. Still relatively new to the scene, the gallery has big dreams and a passionate director to propel it forward. Next up for the space are a series of collab-duos, the first with Estela Semeco and Yoon Nam on Nov. 4, Brandy Wednesday and Julie Fordham on Nov. 11, and Marcy Starz and Alea Hurst on Nov. 18. For more information about the gallery and to keep up with future events, visit the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ StrangeMatterATL.

Although Taylor lived and worked for most of his life in New York City, his art was more widely known in Europe, with exhibitions in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Taylor presented his work in solo gallery exhibitions in the United States during his life, however his first U.S. museum exhibitions were held posthumously. Taking its title from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s final speech before his assassination in 1968, the High Museum’s photography exhibition “‘A Fire That No Water Could Put Out’: Civil Rights Photography,” which opens Nov. 4, will reflect on the 50th anniversary of that tumultuous year in American history. The more than 40 prints to be featured are drawn in large part from the museum’s collection of photography documenting the civil rights movement. The exhibition will be arranged into three sections that explore the era of Dr. King’s leadership, the year of his death and contemporary reflections on the civil rights movement’s enduring legacy. Artists featured include renowned 20th century photographers Gordon Parks, Danny Lyon, Charles Moore, Roy DeCarava, James Hinton, Steve Schapiro, Diane Arbus, Ernest Withers, Doris Derby and Burk Uzzle as well as notable contemporary photographers David Alekhuogie, Dawoud Bey, Jason Lazarus and Sheila Pree Bright. Ooh La La! Five places to try French Toast around Intown By Isadora Pennington
W
ith the arrival of fall an eye on the upcoming holidays, this month I chose to profile one of my favorite cold weather breakfast treats: French Toast. It’s hard to go wrong with French Toast – the egg-battered bread fried up and drizzled with maple syrup and sometimes sprinkled with powdered sugar. It’s somehow both savory and sweet, and goes great with breakfast meats. My personal favorite is maple syrup on bacon, but that’s a story for another time. The dish is a fairly simple concoction, but the varieties are endless. With origins that are speculated to date back to the 4th or 5th century in Europe, it has long been a fastidious way to make a filling meal using few ingredients and was traditionally served alongside game birds and other meats. In France, the dish is known as ‘pain perdu,’ a term which means “lost bread” and references the frequent repurposing of stale bread for the recipe. The popularity of the dish flourished across Europe and Asia, and as such has seen many iterations and evolutions. In modern day America, it’s not at all uncommon to find French Toast listed on the menu of your favorite local restaurant (and some fast food joints) or served up hot and fresh on your family’s breakfast table. This month I visited five of my favorite local spots for the delectable dish, presented below for your consideration.
◄ HIGHLAND BAKERY 655 Highland Ave. NE (404) 586-0772 or highlandbakery.com. Super thick slices of challah bread, topped with seasonal fresh fruit & French cream, with brown sugar butter on the side, $10.99 for full order or $5.99 for half order.
◄ RISE-N-DINE ► 1565 N. Decatur Road (404) 377-4407 or facebook.com/ breakfastatl French Toast two ways, with added mixed berries ($9.95) or with bananans ($9.50). Shown here with a Soy Mocha ($4.40) and a side of bacon ($3).
▼ LE PETIT MARCHE 1984 Hosea L Williams Drive NE (404) 371-9888 or lepetitmarche.net French Toast Sandwich: Vanilla-rum battered french toast, scrambled eggs, with your choice of bacon, Delia’s chicken sausage or veggie sausage all drizzled with warm buttery syrup, $8.99.
▼ FOLK ART RESTAURANT 465 N. Highland Ave. NE (404) 537-4493 or folkartrestaurant.com Cinnamon Pecan Sticky Bun French Toast, $8.25.
▲ R. THOMAS’ DELUXE GRILL 1812 Peachtree St., NW. (404) 881-0246 or rthomasdeluxegrill.net R.’s Big Breakfast Special: Half order of French toast, two eggs any style, choice of bacon, ham, or veggie sausage, $13.75.

Chef-driven ‘eateries’ coming to Coda in Midtown The Collective, a group of restaurants and “eateries,” has been announced for the Coda development at Technology Square in Midtown. The Collective will include eight to 10 chef-driven spaces featuring a sampling of cuisines from across the world in a communal seating area opening up into a 20,000 square foot outdoor “living room.” The dining area is expected to open in February 2019. The circa-1926 Crum & Forster building located on the property will serve as an 8,000 square foot, full-service restaurant with patio seating serving as a gateway to the outdoor living room. Prospective food offerings include healthy cuisine with salad, grain bowls and smoothies; international street food including Middle Eastern, Mexican, Asian and Indian; staples such as pizza and coffee; and a full-service central bar that will enable patrons to take advantage of open carry permitting at Coda. Restaurant leasing is being spearheaded by SRS Real Estate Partners’ team Adrienne Crawford and Lily H. Heimburger for the Portman Holdings project. “Midtown is the new headquarters for numerous large, high-profile companies whose employees value access to unique culinary destinations,” said Heimburger, vice president at SRS. “We’re creating space that, like a true marketplace, will offer pedestrian-accessible gathering, meeting and dining spots dispersed throughout.” Companies with headquarters relocating to Midtown Atlanta – in, and in close proximity to, Coda – include Keysight, Honeywell, Interface, Anthem, Accenture and NCR – among others.

Welcome to the interview series where I discuss food with citizens of Atlanta who are prominent for non-food-related reasons. For this installment, I spoke to Michelle Nunn, President and CEO of CARE USA, the humanitarian aid and international development nonprofit. The daughter of Senator Sam Nunn, she was the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2014. How do you like your eggs cooked? ► Scrambled with a lot of cheese. What are your two favorite things to put in mac and cheese, other than the mac and the cheese? ► I hate to be boring, but I just like straight up mac and cheese. I can be talked into bacon. What are some of your favorite spots for brunch? ► Thumbs Up and Highland Bakery. The CARE USA headquarters is located in Downtown, near Centennial Olympic Park. What’s the best place to walk to for a meal? ► Sweet Auburn Curb Market. You’ve traveled far and wide on behalf of your work with CARE. What are your favorite foreign cities for great food? ► Bangkok and typically wherever I last travelled. Most recently, Kabul, where the grapes and bread were amazing. Are you any good at gardening? ► Not at all, but I like to eat my 14 year old’s home-grown tomatoes.
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS
Wine and beer, or the hard stuff, or none at all? ► Sadly for my husband [Ron Martin, Jr.] who would like an occasional margarita companion, I am a teetotaler. What is your guilty pleasure snack food? Favorite food for a tailgate? ► Jenni’s Darkest Chocolate Ice Cream. Guacamole and chips for the tailgate. What are your feelings about red velvet cake? ► I would never turn it down, but I am more for classic chocolate cake. Is there any food so disgusting to you that you just won’t eat it? ► I prefer to not knowingly eat intestines, brains and such. Who does most of the cooking in your house? Who cooked while you were growing up? ► My husband does the cooking or often the takeout. My 12-year-old daughter is the baker in our family. My mom was the cook in our house growing up. Alongside disaster relief, education and economic development, part of CARE’s mission focuses directly on child nutrition and agriculture. What factors should people consider if they want to help end world hunger? ► First, it is important that although many of us enjoy abundant food options, there are millions of people who go hungry every day. After a prolonged decline in hunger rates, a new United Nations report found that global hunger increased last year and now affects more than 815 million people. This increase is due, in part, to climate change and conflict and unfortunately comes at a time when some are calling for deep, unprecedented cuts to foreign assistance.

Second, people should know that there are concrete ways we can overcome hunger and that women are key and need to be at the center of our response. We can both feed the world and help overcome poverty if we lift up female farmers. Research shows that if women farmers had the same access to productive resources as men, they could increase yields on their farms by 20-39 percent, and the number of hungry people in the world could be reduced by 100-150 million. This is the vital work that CARE is leading around the world and from right here in Atlanta. At l a n t a I N t o w n Pa p e r. c o m

Hot Market
Demand continues for Intown condos and townhomes By Kathy Dean
T
he Intown real estate market is only getting hotter. Condominiums and townhomes are some of the most popular choices for homebuyers. Several new projects are in the planning and development stages, while current communities are selling out fast.
“Every day there’s a new announcement of companies relocating their businesses to Midtown, which continues to drive up the demand for condo living,” said Karen Rodriguez, Co-Founder, Vice President, CITY HAUS, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties. “With a constant influx of millennials and empty nesters all desiring this type of living, we believe the condo market will continue to be a driving force in the overall Intown real estate market,” Rodriguez added. The under construction No. 2 Opus Place (opusplaceatlanta.com) on 14th Street is one popular condominium community in Atlanta. The 53-story building of one-, twoand three-bedroom homes and penthouses are priced from $700,000 to $12 million. “No. 2 Opus Place is designed by Perkins + Will, with interiors by the New York design firm Champalimaud,” said Rodriguez. “A few of the many features are open floorplans, floor to ceiling glass, Miele appliances, marble and quartz countertops, and Smart Home technology.” Christa Huffstickler, President & CEO, Engel & Völkers Atlanta, has seen a strong surge of interest in the Intown condo market. “Developers are responding to this pent-up demand and we’re seeing exciting, high-end projects opening in hot areas like Midtown, West Midtown and South Buckhead,” she said. Metro Atlanta is expected to add 55,700 jobs in 2017, Huffstickler reported, and since the city is a top contender for Amazon’s second headquarters, she predicted that the housing market will continue to flourish over at least the next several years. “The luxury market especially is having a moment,” she said. “As Atlanta’s population steadily grows, we’re seeing demand for attached product with expansive floorplans, white glove amenities and great locations in the urban core.” The prices are already rising in the high-

end condo market, between five and six percent each year, and Huffstickler said she doesn’t expect it to slow down, even as developers work to catch up with demand. She pointed to three exciting condo projects that are attracting a lot of attention. “The Atlantic in West Midtown offers stunning floorplans with floor-to-ceiling windows and breathtaking skyline views,” she said. Five-star amenities include a fullservice concierge and valet parking. “Residents also enjoy a state-of-the-art fitness club with a yoga studio and fitness on demand, along with a brand-new club room with billiards, televisions, wine storage, a catering kitchen and formal dining room,” Huffstickler continued. “The rooftop, resort-style pool and sundeck offer residents cabana towel service and a poolside concierge.” The Atlantic Station location on 17th Street and a dedicated shuttle to the Arts Center MARTA station make accessibility a breeze. The Atlantic (ownatlantic.com) has 180 available homes, ranging from the $400,000s to $1.4 million. Thirteen condominiums are still available at 1065 Peachtree (1065midtown. com) in Atlanta, where one-bedroom condos start in the $500,000s, two bedrooms from $1 million and three bedrooms from $1.6 million. With no more than five homes per floor atop the luxe Loews Atlanta Hotel, residences at 1065 Midtown offer posh living and panoramic views, with 12-foot floor-to-ceiling glass, open spaces and deluxe finishes. “The Peachtree Street location is just steps from Piedmont Park, the Midtown
business district as well as top dining, cultural and entertainment spots,” Huffstickler said. “There’s a full suite of amenities, including a 24hour concierge, fitness center and spa and The Atlantic housekeeping services.” Other top features at 1065 Peachtree include private, glass-walled terraces, pre-wiring for smart home automation and resident-only entrances and elevators, ensuring top-level security. The Cosmopolitan (rockhavenga.com/ cosmopolitan) is located in Lindbergh
Park, one of the city’s most ambitious redevelopment projects with its own movie theater, pool, gym and clubhouse. According to Huffstickler, the unparalleled location bridges posh Buckhead and vibrant Midtown, and offers pedestrian access to MARTA and a variety of local shops, cafés, eateries and nightlife. “The three-level townhomes boast modern Brownstone stylings including spacious, open floor plans with contemporary décor and details like subway-inspired tile and quartz countertops,” she said. Located on Lindbergh Drive in Atlanta, The Cosmopolitan currently has 33 available homes, starting in the $450,000s. “We’re seeing a marked increase in Continued on page 44

The Charles Continued from page 42
buyer demand for condo product, both Intown and even north of the city,” said Anne Schwall, Vice President, Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty, Developer Services Division. Buyers across all spectrums are gravitating towards maintenance-free, lock and leave homes that are thoughtfully-designed to live well, no matter the size, she said. Schwall stated that with the boom in townhome development, particularly in the suburbs, as well as high-end rentals, buyers who are well-suited to and interested in condo living are an underserved market at the moment in Atlanta. “Sales at The Charles in Buckhead Village are a testament to this,” she said, “as we’ve sold over 50 percent since launching sales in December of 2016.” With its premier location on Peachtree Road in Atlanta, the 57 condominium homes of The Charles (thecharlesbuckhead. com) offer sweeping Buckhead and Downtown views as well as walkability to Buckhead Village. There are still two- and three-bedroom residences and two remaining penthouses available, ranging from 2,460 to over 4,000 square feet. Prices start at $1.4 million and top out at $4 million. “Each floor plan boasts expansive great rooms with folding glass NanaWall doors enabling a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living,” Schwall added. Features also include chef-caliber kitchens and a clubroom and well-equipped fitness and yoga center. The Charles’ 14,000-square foot, elevated amenity terrace with outdoor deck features an infinity pool, green space and manicured gardens. Set on Peachtree Road in the heart of residential Buckhead, Emerson Buckhead (emersonbuckhead.com) offers 41 gracious residences ranging from 2,200 to over 8,000 square feet. Pricing that starts at $2.2 million.
Schwall said that JPX Works, founded by Jarel Portman and Bruce Fernald, is the visionary developer behind this landmark development. “The design of Emerson Buckhead encompasses two- and three- bedroom residences plus options to combine units, which several buyers have already opted to do,” she explained. Each residence offers 270-degree city and canopy views that are enjoyed from expansive terraces averaging 450 square feet. Emerson’s five-star services and hotelstyle amenities include a full-time valet and concierge, fitness center, yoga studio, heated lap pool, exquisite pool deck with cabanas and formal lawn. Located at the nexus of GA 400 and I-285 in Dunwoody, High Street Atlanta (highstreetatlanta. com) is another project that’s drawing a lot of interest. The planned mixeduse development in the Central Perimeter area will feature condominiums and apartments as well as hotel, retail and office space. Schwall said that the High Street Atlanta condo residences will range in size from approximately 2,000 square feet to 5,000 square feet. “The apartments and condos will both have amenities, which include their own state-of-the-art health and fitness facilities, lounges and entertainment areas, exhibit kitchens and private dining rooms, wine storage and tasting area, and private theater and game rooms,” she said. “There are even pet spas for our four-legged friends.” Some other amenities include sumptuously landscaped outdoor terraces with pools, cabanas, grilling areas,

meditation gardens and lounge areas that rival resort hotels. “With Atlanta’s long commute times and the rising cost of new homes in the city, townhomes are also in high demand,” said Tim Baldus of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “Since Intown’s single family homes have become unaffordable for many buyers, townhomes are an especially good option.” He noted that many young professionals like the affordability and the nearby locations to their jobs. “They work long hours and lead very busy lives,” Baldus said, “and they appreciate the low maintenance and affordable dues of a townhome community.”
High Street Atlanta
Jillian Britt, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, added that downsizing empty nesters also love the low maintenance of townhomes and are drawn in by Intown’s easy access of shopping and restaurants. Skyland Brookhaven (skylandbrookhaven. com), located on Skyland Drive in Brookhaven, is one townhome project that has really taken off, according to Baldus. “Skyland Brookhaven features large, open floorplans of 2,500 to 2,900 square feet, and the many amenities include a fitness facility and salt water pool,” he said. The new Brookhaven City Park is located right beside the community, and greenspace and pocket parks are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. Currently, there are 13 townhomes available in Skyland Brookhaven, which range from the $480,000s to the $600,000s. White Oak at East Lake (venturehomes. com/white-oak-at-east-lake) in south Decatur is a good example of how eager Intown homebuyers are for quality townhomes. According to Juanetta
White Oak at East Lake
Brown-Vasquez, Realtor and New Homes Sales Specialist, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia, all the built homes in the community are already sold. “All 24 townhomes went under contract between March and July of 2017,” said Brown-Vasquez. The new phase of six homes, scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2018, are expected to sell out just as quickly. There will be a total of 84 homes when the project is complete. Brown-Vasquez said that most of the White Oak at East Lake homeowners are first time homebuyers. “This is a great place to live, and we see that by the great people this community has attracted,” she explained. “Our homeowners are a hip and highly diverse group of friendly, professional people that includes doctors, dentists and attorneys.” Each three-story townhouse of White Oak at East Lake covers roughly 2,500 square feet and has three bedrooms, three and a half baths and full-sized closets, said Brown-Vasquez. “The finished terrace level has a flex room that can be used as a game room, study, man cave – whatever the homeowner wants or needs,” she added. “Other customizable finishes are available to make each home fit the owner’s individual tastes and lifestyle.” Features include a gated entry, full two-car garage, private patio and high-end touches like stainless steel appliances and tankless water heaters. Prices start in the $270,000s.
