Refugee Beads caught my attention at Candler Park’s Fall Fest. A decade ago, I worked with refugees who fled their country because of racial, religious or political persecution and came to Atlanta to rebuild their lives. The transition to life in the U.S., while full of promise, is extremely difficult both financially and emotionally. So, I was curious about the connection between refugees and this beautiful affordable jewelry. As I paid for my necklace, Director Ruthie North was happy to explain that she trained local refugee women to make jewelry to earn much needed income and for fellowship. She markets Refugee Beads jewelry across America in stores, craft fairs, and online. Ruthie invited me to their weekly work session in Chamblee where the artisans gather to create jewelry, share a meal, and support one another. There I met Purna, who fled violence in Bhutan for safety in Nepal two decades ago. For 16 years she and her family lived in a refugee camp. During this time she met and married her husband and gave birth to two children. There is no future in a refugee camp, but thankfully in 2008 the U.S invited her family to resettle in Georgia. Luck struck again in 2009 when Purna started working with Refugee Beads. That’s when Ruthie decided to combine her jewelry-making/retail experience with

her passion for helping refugee women. Since then, the work has helped Purna adjust to her new life – both financially and emotionally. She has opportunities and goals now – such as moving her family into a house. Purna and six artisans were busy creating product for the holiday season and the January AmericasMart show. Refugee Beads hopes to secure more wholesale partners, like WorldCraft, who use the show to build their inventory for the year. These partnerships provide guaranteed income to the artisans. Despite language and cultural barriers – the women worked in harmony stringing bracelets and swapping stories. WHAT HANUKKAH CAN LEARN FROM CHRISTMAS By Mark Cohen

As a Jewish chap I grew up celebrating Hanukkah. It’s a pretty good holiday with more than its share of worthy attributes. The menorah, potato pancakes and a compelling backstory. But as a pragmatist, I’m always looking for improvement. And here is where I think Hanukkah could learn a thing or two from Christmas. Christmas is a holiday with its act together. First of all, what’s up with the spelling? Hanukkah, Chanukah, sometimes Chanukkah. Pick one already, Judaism. Christmas is spelled one way. One way, Judaism. Next, think about getting a mascot. (Not in a religious sense. This essay is purely secular, people.) Santa Claus has done much to solidify Christmas’s brand. Once Thanksgiving is over, that guy is everywhere. A Jewish kid goes to the mall in December, where’s little Murray or Rachel getting their picture taken? You can’t sit on a dreidle’s lap. And, with the absence of positive role
models like Mr. and Mrs. Claus, there’s zero motivation to be good. Where’s the naughty or nice list Jewish kids have to worry about? Without a moral standard set by the North Pole governing body, Jewish kids pretty much think they’re getting eight presents no matter what. And then there’s the tree thing. People who celebrate Christmas have this whole pre-game run up to the big day. They go out, sometime weeks beforehand, pick a tree, bring it home and spend some quality family time making it look all Christmassy. Jews just have to remember to pick up some candles at Publix on the way home from the office. Let’s get a plant involved, Hebrews. Maybe a bush or a nice ficus or something. Moving on, when’s the last time the kids gathered round the TV to watch a Hanukkah special? Um... never. The Grinch could care less about stealing Hanukkah. No way is Rudolf going to schlepp a Hanukkah sleigh eight nights in a row. And the list goes on. Frosty, Charlie Brown...every year Christmas has a solid, go-to media campaign. At best, Hanukkah has a lame Adam Sandler movie. Add to that Christmas’s mile long musical repertoire and you’ve got a holiday
that people keep coming back for. You’ll never be stuck in an elevator listening to “I’m Dreaming of a white Hanukkah” or “All I Want for Hanukkah is My Two Front Teeth.” Which is weird because there’s a ton of Jewish dentists. Listen Hanukah, this isn’t a competition. But whatever Christmas is doing, it’s kind of really working. Swallow your kosher pride, incorporate a few of their proven plays and just maybe, one day, the banks and post office might close for your sake as well. The 24th annual celebration at Underground Atlanta will begin early on New Year’s Eve, with music and family events from 11 a.m. onward. Dec. 1-4, 1977: The Grand Ole Opry Show opened at the new Georgia World Congress Center. Two shows daily starred some of the biggest names in country music at the time, including Barbara Mandrell, Jack Greene, Jeannie Seely, Little Jimmy Dickens, Dickey Lee and Smoky Mountain Sunshine. Dec. 4, 1964: Fire destroyed the Mayfair Club at the top of a sloping lawn at 1456 Spring Street. The two-story building was the focal point of Jewish civic and social activity for 26 years. The Mayfair Club, founded in 1930, first met in the Atlanta Biltmore. After it opened in 1938, the club was visited by Eleanor Roosevelt, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, mayors Ivan Allen and William Berry Hartsfield, senators Herman Talmadge and Richard Russell, and Governor Carl Sanders. Dec. 10, 1895: Atlanta celebrated Lollie Belle Wylie Day in the Woman’s Building at the 1895 Cotton States Exposition in Piedmont Park. The distinguished Atlanta resident was a journalist poet, playwright, musician, civic leader and entrepreneur. Widowed at age 27, the Alabama native was the Atlanta Journal’s first paid society editor. In 1890, she was an organizer and officer of the

first Woman Press Club of Georgia and in 1914 a founding member of the Atlanta Writers Club. With business partner Ephie E. Williams, Lollie opened a small office on Alabama Street where for several years they published a weekly paper printed on pale pink paper, called Society. On August 19, 1922, the Georgia Legislature officially adopted the song “Georgia,” lyrics by poet Robert Loveman and music by Lollie as the state’s official song. It all began when Kayla and Jeff decided it was time to teach their kids about sympathy, compassion and kindness. They were already familiar with Childspring International, an Atlanta-based nonprofit that has been providing medical care for thousands of children around the world. They knew that Childspring was always in need of families willing to host the children while they underwent surgeries in the United States. Both Kayla, who has a master’s degree in social work, and Jeff, who works as a pediatrician, have a passion for children. They decided that this was the perfect opportunity to make a difference.
Over three weeks, the Lewis’ family kindly opened their doors and their hearts. The four of them treated Cynthia and Ever as if they were a part of their family. Eli and Ariana shared their room with Ever and Cynthia and made sure to dedicate time playing sports and doing arts and crafts. Every day, Eli brushed Ever’s teeth and put on his shoes. Eli and Ariana taught Ever and Cynthia how to tell time and the family bought them their first watches. “It was so nice to provide a loving family for them while they received medical treatment and I think they felt safe with us,” said Kayla. Celebrating Summer Dale Just before submitting my original column for this month, I received the sad news that our community had lost one of its most courageous and generous young spirits. I wanted to take this opportunity and honor the life of Summer Dale, a Living by Giving hero and someone who will certainly continue to impact the lives of thousands of others for years to come. At 16 years old, Summer had become a celebrity of sorts; the kind of celebrity we need to have around us more. In a year’s time, she became publicly known for her courage, authenticity and, most importantly, her generosity. She was a young, beautiful woman known for her illuminating grace in the face of a devastating medical diagnosis. It was October 2011 when Summer and her family received the news that an MRI had revealed a rare cancerous tumor. At an age when most kids’ biggest worry is passing their driver’s test, Summer faced an unimaginable diagnosis that thrust her life into a new paradigm of purpose. Summer optimistically took on some of the field’s most rigorous treatments at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and MD Anderson in Houston. What is most remarkable, however, is that her fight didn’t just focus on herself. Throughout
the year she was dealing with her own illness, she founded and grew an organization called Team Summer. By raising money through the sales of purple Team Summer wristbands and individual donations, Summer helped several young cancer patients make their fight a little bit easier. From gas cards and help with transportation to chemotherapy treatments and a professional fashion photoshoot to help a peer feel beautiful in spite of her hair loss, all wishes were fulfilled to bring joy to others facing the similar challenges that Summer had come to recognize through her own journey. Unfortunately, Summer lost her battle with cancer last month. Her life doesn’t end there though. Her organization will continue to do the work that empowered Summer throughout her own battle. To me, this is the triumph of her life: Summer sought the understanding of her struggles in a unique way by helping others and that allowed her to experience her own legacy during her lifetime. That’s a lesson we should all take away; that’s the stuff that makes heroes. Summer Dale is certainly one of mine. Her close friend and mentor, Haley Kilpatrick, says, “Summer taught me so much about what is important in life. She

Decatur’s Greene’s Fine Foods gears up for the season By Wendy Binns Publisher It’s officially pecan season. Tommy and Phil Greene light up talking about the rich, buttery crop coming from parts of Georgia and Florida to their Decatur store, Greene’s Fine Foods. “These are fresh out of the tree,” says Tommy. The brothers have operated their family business for four years with roots in the business stemming back to their childhood in Augusta. They learned the nuts and bolts (so to speak) while growing up around their parents’ candy and nut business. That business, now Pecans Unlimited, is still thriving. “Dad will sell about 14,000 pounds of chocolate covered pecans this season,” explains Phil. They remember their own holiday dinner table with pecans, too – pecan pies, sweet potato pies with pecans on top and a memorable Jello salad with pecans. And, this time of year makes it peak season for roasting and cooking with them. The purists can find the plain variety at the store, but there’s really something for everyone’s taste at Greene’s. Chocolate and praline pecans are some of their best sellers. And, the Pecan Sampler tin and the Pecan Lover’s tin are popular options if you can’t commit to just one. The store isn’t all about pecans, though. There’s tons of candy. Phil’s favorite is the
caramel pecan logs, which are made in the store. He explains that they’re great sliced and served on a platter for an easy dessert. Tommy elaborates that all of the candies made right there in the store, such as the fudge pops, salted caramels and chocolate covered Oreos, are big hits with customers. There are also lemon drops, lollipops, jellybeans, gumballs and pretty much everything that would make Willy Wonka sing and dance. “All of our gummy products are popular – some say they’re the best they’ve ever eaten,” says Tommy. And, the store isn’t all about candy either. There are toys. Boomerangs, yo-yos, slinkies and other nostalgic retro toys line the shelves. They carry a big variety of classics and unusual finds in lots of price ranges. If nuts, candy and toys don’t grab your interest, there’s more: growlers and wine. “It’s been fun learning about all of the craft beers,” says Phil. They have a room dedicated to them. The basement of the store serves as headquarters for packaging and shipping the mail orders: tins, baskets and boxes. They package everything to-order with a custom card and ship to individual addresses. Tommy points to a stack of 17 sampler tins and explains that that customer is the first to order each year – he

Cellar 13 Specializing in small, family owned and estate bottled wines, Cellar 13 in Buckhead prides itself on carrying a unique selection chosen by owner John Passman. Selections: Frey- Sohler – French Sparkling Wine ($21.99) Bubbles are the way to go on New Years if you are looking for that celebratory feel. From the extreme northeast region of France and made from all white grapes, Passman recommends this because it is the perfect accompaniment to seafood and vegetables or on its own. J.L. Vergnon - True Champagne ($45.99) Passman chose this J.L. Vergon because it is a true champagne from the champagne region of France. This champagne is produced by a small grower, which means they make all the wine using all of their own grapes. Passman points out that small productions improves the quality of the product.
3 Parks Wine Shop Named after the three parks – Grant, Glenwood and Ormewood – in the surrounding area, 3 Parks Wine Shop owner, Bob Conquest, wants residents to know this is their wine shop. As a local resident himself, Bob knew first hand that the community needed a wine shop that was approachable, affordable and listened to what their customers wanted. point, this is a good, dry sparkling wine. It can be enjoyed on its own or mixed with orange juice for a great mimosa. Conquest recommended picking this one up early because it always sells out. Petalos del Bierzo – Spanish Wine ($19.99) The aromas of spice and black cherry will compliment any dinner selection – from seafood to red meat. This wine is at its finest when allowed to breathe after the initial pour. Conquest said this would be a perfect choice for a guest to bring with to a New Year’s celebration because of the beautiful design of the bottle itself.
Candler Park Market Candler Park Market is the place most stop by on their way home to pick up essentials for dinner or a snack, but they also have an impressive selection of wines, too. Selections: Kila Cava- Spanish Sparkling Wine ($9.99) This crisp sparkler makes for a good accompaniment to seafood platters or for the New Year’s toast. Leaving most palates with a tinge of green and orange peel, this option is perfect for all you party planners looking for a reasonably priced bottle that does not skimp on quality. Saint-Hilaire – Historical Sparkling Wine ($14.99) This wine is produced in a traditional method including a second fermentation within the bottle. The results are a somewhat sweet, often cloudy wine with a relatively low level of alcohol and carbonation. Possessing soft green apple, tangerine oil and faint yellow floral notes accented with hints of lavender, this is perfect for those who want to highlight the importance of wine history for the holiday.

heart-warming Family CooKing traditions maKe YOur OWN GiNGerBreaD HOuSe By Christine Fallucco, Mud Pie Cooking School Nothing will create greater family cooking traditions, be more fun or bring out the creative side of you and your child more than making with them a gingerbread house for the Christmas holiday season. Planning for this special event ensures the most enjoyable experience. In advance, set aside a couple of hours for this special activity. Prepare your shopping list. Buy all items you want or need in advance of making your family’s gingerbread house. Think about music that you want to play during the assembling and any drinks you want to serve to add to the ambience. Hot chocolate and hot apple cider with cinnamon are obvious favorites for your little one. Identify a place in the house where you have room for spreading out all ingredients and you are comfortable with making a mess that you can easily sweep up or wipe away. Know where you can display the masterpiece you and your child have made. It will be important for him or her to regularly see the great piece you made together and to show off to any guests that visit your home. Lastly, plan to take photos or video of creating your gingerbread house. Together, you’ll treasure viewing and reliving your experience.

Stick Gingerbread crackers onto icing to make walls and roof. Ice rooftop and adhere frosted mini wheats for tile. Ice sugar cones adhere to board with some icing and decorate with candy to make trees. Spread icing where needed on house to adhere squares of candy bar to make door and windows. Use other candy pieces to decorate house and white quartered board. To adhere any candy to board use the white icing. Beth decorated the table with animal ornaments made by her great aunt. “I think it’s important to bring back ornaments and have the memories from childhood,” she said. The

centerpiece is made of her grandmother’s vintage ornaments, using just a dinner plate and glass dome. The napkins were cut by a piece of vintage fabric she had and the tablecloth is a painter’s drop cloth you can buy from Home Depot for under $10. The white plates and mugs are handmade by Tourne and the festive lace-textured plates are crafted by Brigitte Bouquet.
Hanukkah
This inviting table reflects the traditional colors of Hanukkah, which are blue, silver and white. Beth used a blue table she got second hand for $15 and then cut a crochet bed cover to make a pretty runner. The napkins are a navy fabric Beth had around the house. She fringed the edges by pulling the warp and weft threads. After the lighting of the Hanukkah menorah, it’s custom to play a dreidel game with chocolate coins (the silver are bittersweet for
the adults, the gold are milk chocolate for the kids). Beth added the coins, dreidels and a silver goblet for the blessing of the wine. The plates are mix of dishes, both new and old, with the colors of blue, white and silver predominant. It’s important to not feel stuck on conformity. DIY: Peanut Brittle
When I was thinking of what DIY food item to feature for the Sweet Peach Holiday Guide, I immediately remembered my friend Stephanie’s peanut brittle. She makes it every December and without fail, we can’t wait to open our gift tins to eat and savor every piece. This highly addictive brittle tastes amazing, and the best part is it’s really easy to do. I watched Stephanie make this twice and the whole thing was done in less than 15 minutes each time. Just remember to wrap your brittle in pretty packaging!

Ginger Spice apple Berry Cake Layers of citrus and ginger cream cheese, caramelized apples and cranberries. $30
14 Layer Cake Sponge cake made with premium chocolate and Grand Marnier liqueur. $35
1/4 cup water 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup corn syrup dash salt 1 cup dry roasted peanuts 2 tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon baking soda *Candy thermometer Mix first 5 ingredients in saucepan, cooking on high heat. Stir constantly until it reaches 300 degrees on your candy thermometer. Remove from heat. Add butter, mix a bit and then quickly add the baking soda. Stir quickly, then immediately pour onto a buttered cookie sheet and spread out. Let stand for 30 minutes, then simply break the brittle into pieces. Gift wrap as you wish!

Teams build food sculptures for CANstruction 2012 By Collin Kelley, Editor The atrium at Colony Square was filled with curious sculptures made from canned goods and food items in November. There was the Lorax, Ratatouille stirring up a pot of stew, a looming Darth Vader and an oversized Captain America shield. These pieces – and many more – were part of CANstruction 2012, which is organized locally by the Society for Design Administration and American Institute of Architects Atlanta to benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Local design and architecture teams built the sculptures in a matter of hours and all the food used – some 32,000 pounds of it – goes to the Atlanta Community Food Bank for distribution to the needy. Vintage and modern mix in custom boomboxes By Brigette Flood Take a love of music, art and vintage goods, pair it with two creative minds and a propensity to try new things ... and voila you have the Thumper. It’s a one-of-a kind rechargeable retro boombox made from vintage suitcase and authentic hi-fi speakers. It sounds as good as it looks, which is saying a quite lot. Like most amazing ideas, it started with inspiration. While furnishing their new digital design studio in the King Plow Arts Center earlier this year, Curious Provisions founders David Preiss and Javier Santana discovered a shared penchant for upcycling vintage items into modern decor. First they transformed antique sewing tables into contemporary workstations and created a conference table from recycled barn wood and plumbing pipes. Then Javier came across a pair of Cerwin-Vega speakers on Craigslist and a pair vintage suitcases while thrift shopping. Having homeschooled audio skills thanks to a cousin, Javier finally came up with the idea to pull
the speakers from their banged up cabinets and into the suitcases. Friends and visitors reacted so positively to the combination, a new business was born. Since February, Curious Provisions has been wowing people who love design and music with their Thumpers. The old meets new style is beautiful, functional art. Each piece has a style and a quirkiness all its own due to the custom-designed, hand-crafted considerations given to each. But there’s nothing old about the technology inside. Thumpers are known for their killer audio. They’re portable and rechargeable. They work with any mobile device or laptop and most of them come with a volume, bass and treble controls mounted on the side. Atlanta & Decatur work to make cycling safe, accessible By Collin Kelley Editor

If you haven’t noticed, biking in Atlanta is on the rise. There are more people using bicycles for transportation and leisure than ever before. The cities of Atlanta and Decatur are working to make sure biking is safer, sustainable and accessible to all. In Atlanta last month, the City Council, Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, Midtown Alliance and the Georgia Institute of Technology announced three new initiatives to boost rider safety, sustainability and access. Visible proof of this can be found at Tech Square near the intersection of 5th and West Peachtree streets at Georgia Tech’s Ernest Scheller Jr. College of Business. Alterations to the intersection have resulted in the city’s first raised bicycle track, green bicycle lane, two-stage left-turn box and bicycle signal at the intersection. These alterations will enable cyclists to safely cross a busy intersection and be guided by a dedicated bicycle lane and traffic signal. As part of a planning effort between the city and Georgia Tech, a new smartphone app for the iPhone and Android called Cycle Atlanta is available for download and designed specifically for bikers to provide direct feedback to the city. “We want to know what bicyclists consider to be barriers and obstacles to riding,” said Commissioner James Shelby of the Department of Planning and Community Development. “This new app will give us good information and greater insight about areas that need improvement like the one here at Tech Square.” Over the next three years, the Atlanta plans to construct 34 miles of bicycle routes, paths and other facilities:
Bring One for the Chipper is Georgia’s annual Christmas tree recycling program. The Chipper program involves hundreds of Georgia communities and thousands of volunteers. Since its inception, the program has recycled an estimated 5.9 million Christmas trees.The mulch from these trees has been used for playgrounds, local government beautification projects, and individual yards. You can support the Chipper program by bringing your cut Christmas tree to a designated drop off site or volunteering with your local coordinator to collect trees.

City planners are also working toward doubling the rate of bicycle commuting by city residents from 1.1 percent to 2.2 percent by 2016. In Decatur, the city was recently honored by the League of American Bicyclists for its efforts to improve cycling. Decatur was named a bronze Bicycle Friendly Communities for its additional bike lanes and pedestrian friendly areas. Decatur was also lauded for having bicycling education at more than 90 percent of its elementary and middle schools. The city also worked in partnership with Bike Decatur to create a bicycle suitability map. The map identifies roadways using three bicycle difficulty rankings with the intention of assisting cyclists in choosing suitable routes to destinations. The map features a main city map along with a downtown inset. The intention is to help

One of my personal heroes, Jane Goodall, was in town recently to meet with children and civil rights leaders to help spread the word about her work and also form new partnerships for her children’s program Goodall, through her foundation, runs a program called Roots and Shoots. It supports and encourages children to get involved in community service, allowing the children to choose causes and work together to find ways to solve problems. The meeting in Atlanta was an opportunity to meet with kids from Ron Clark Academy and meet leaders in the Civil Rights community. The environment is an important Civil Rights issue. Poor city planning and high levels of pollution are leading to severe health problems among children who live in cities like Atlanta. It’s a wrong that must be made right. Goodall spent decades studying the social and mental development of chimpanzees in Africa from the late 1950s. She’s since become one of the world’s leading spokespeople for preserving animal species and living in balance with the natural systems that support all life. She worked with my friend Mary Mapes to launch the program at Jackson Elementary years ago, when Mapes’ children were students there. Goodall visited Atlanta again this month to talk with the likes of Bernice King and the Ron Clark Academy students because she wants to connect with urban areas. “She’s always been interested in Civil Rights and environmentalism,” Mapes said. “We

brought those two groups together.” One of the students wrote a poem for Goodall and the whole crowd was moved when he stood up to read it to her. It really was a beautiful moment. It reminded me of how important it is that children get involved and stay involved, which is something my father taught us when we were young. The children’s enthusiasm and involvement is really what powers Roots and Shoots. In Atlanta, Jackson Elementary’s program is still growing, with students running programs to help the Humane Society and local food banks, among other causes. The program is also in place at The

Local winners included the City of Atlanta for the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail; Atlanta Streets Alive for the recurring street festival; the Brookwood Hills Neighborhood Association for repairing 3,000 feet of curbs and sidewalks; and Living Walls, the ongoing art program.

BeltLine Gets $3 million grant
The Woodruff Foundation has donated $3 million to the Atlanta BeltLine for further development of Eastside Trail, including the Reynoldstown extension and connecting the trail to Historic Fourth Ward Park. East Lake Farm Grows In January of this year, the East Lake Farmers Market and Southeastern Horticultural Society (SHS) partnered to create the East Lake Farm, adjacent to the ELF Market, to improve access and availability of local and fresh produce, the consumption of local fruits and vegetables, and the development of gardening and farming among county residents. Thanks to a Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) program grant from the DeKalb County Board of Health/ Centers for Disease Control in 2011, ELF Market and SHS were able to build a successful working farm in an empty urban space. While the farm has been
a highly successful educational tool for the community, the underlying financial assumptions regarding farm income have proven overly optimistic. For that reason, ELF Market has transferred the management and operations of East Lake Farm to SHS, which has extensive experience managing urban agriculture projects. “We believe the farm can best work as a resource and complement to the community learning garden and as an educational and community resource,” says ELF Market President Doug Williams. “We have every confidence SHS will be able to further grow this valuable community resource.” elfmarket.org. Oglethorpe University has officially broken ground for its new campus center, which will be constructed on the site of the former Emerson Student Center. More than $15 million was raised to build the campus center, including a $5 million gift, the largest in the history of the university. The campus center is scheduled to open next fall. college & career connection at grady By Anna Winer Parent volunteers are a valued asset at any school, but it is the rare parent that is so committed to their work that they keep volunteering even after their children have graduated. For Susan Muntzing and Jenny Buyens, co-founders of Grady High School’s College and Career Connection (CCC), helping students navigate the increasingly complex passage to college has become something of a calling. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, public school guidance counselors have on average only 20 minutes a year for each student who needs college counseling. When Susan and Jenny had students at Grady, they saw how painfully overtaxed the counselors were. In 2006, Susan was president of the Grady PTSA, and Jenny was a parent volunteer. They didn’t yet know each other but independently recognized an aching need at Grady to facilitate visiting college recruiters. Frankly, there weren’t many – under 40 a year. Overburdened guidance counselors often didn’t have time to coordinate the visits, and when recruiters did come, there was no quiet and consistent place for them to meet with students. Über-organized Jenny quickly stepped up and offered to assume responsibility for scheduling recruiter visits. At the same time, Susan – then Grady’s PTSA chair – was trying to establish a devoted space for such visits to occur. In the spring of 2007, the PTSA received a $1,000 grant from Atlanta Families Foundation to start a college center, and, with the support of Grady principal Vincent Murray, the CCC was born. Their first space was shared with math teachers in a vacant room furnished with only two computers and two file cabinets. The CCC has grown enormously in just a few years. They now have their own devoted space with furniture and computers provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and an extensive library of catalogues, brochures, test-prep books, and on-line resources with information not only about colleges, but also about summer internships, the military, and vocational/technical schools. The CCC offers workshops on financial aid and scholarships, essay writing, and interviewing skills, and their

impressive website is visited by students from all over the country. And those once-thorny college recruiter visits have increased to more than 150 per year. Recruiters know that Grady is a great school; the student body is diverse, hard working, and motivated – in short, desirable. Jenny gives credit to the students when she says, “Good things come to Grady kids, but they go get them.” Aided by an enthusiastic staff of over 30 volunteers who help out with daily tasks, Jenny, Susan, and another former parent and CCC director, Sarah Bryant, make complementary contributions to the CCC. Susan works with Dr. Murray to maintain a good relationship with the administration. Jenny manages the organization of website and online communications. And Sarah puts together reports with valuable information for students (for example, a list of colleges on a MARTA line). Grady students recognize what a valuable gem they have in the CCC, and they logged over 4,100 individual visits last year. Jasmine Burnett, now a freshman at Harvard, says the CCC “helped me most when it came to having my college essays edited. [The volunteers] helped me choose what I should write the essays about, and gave me great advice on ways to improve them.” Current Grady senior Rachel Citrin, who has already used the CCC to research summer internships and scholarships, says, “I think that Grady is extremely lucky to have such a great resource at the tip of our fingers.”
The CCC welcomes volunteers from the community; having a Grady student is optional. When the Grady stadium was being renovated a couple of years ago, a retired educator was impressed by the look of the school and just walked in and asked how she could help. The CCC was happy to put her to work. Other volunteers include a retired counselor from Decatur High School and a financial planner. Having a broad range of volunteers strengthens Grady’s relationship to the wider community, which can point proudly to a neighborhood school that turns out impressive, college-bound graduates. Paces Properties has purchased the former Tyler Perry Studios complex and Stove Works building at the corner of Irwin and Krog streets in Inman Park. Without a doubt, social media remains a changing landscape. But then why does everything feel about the same? Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr all maintain their status in the list of platforms to be on. Google+ still hasn’t hit its stride Companies are still trying to figure out the best way to utilize the social space. Users are annoyed by that. So here are your stats and facts for 2012: • Facebook – 1 billion users; 600 million mobile users; more than 42 million pages and 9 million apps; average user has 130 friends • YouTube – 4 million views per day; the most

The opening session began with CAP President A.J. Robinson welcoming Maria Vargas, Director of Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge and Excellence Award. This award recognizes buildings that have been retrofitted to conserve water and energy. They measured total energy and water savings of each of the participating Downtown buildings and the award went to Hyatt Regency. The Turner Building (133 Luckie Street) and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church were also considered for the award. Vargas explained that this award is about three words: leadership, results and transparency. She said Atlanta “is leading other cities and driving change.” Recognizing newly created
and renovated spaces, the Atlanta Downtown Design Excellence Awards were presented to Living Walls, The City Speaks for the community/residential category; breensmith Advertising for the office category; and, White Oak Kitchen & Cocktails for the restaurant/bar category. Grant Park Candlelight Tour of Homes Two Victorian mansions and a bed & breakfast are just some of the homes on the 2012 tour of the Grant Park neighborhood. Starting at St. Paul United Methodist Church, the tour will be Saturday, Dec. 8, and Sunday, Dec. 9, from 6 to 10 p.m. both nights. Pretty Old House Couple breathes new life into Morningside home HOME IMPROVEMENT | RENOVATION TIPS| HOME DECOR | BEFORE & AFTERS

A crystal chandelier scored on Craigslist lights up the master bath. Two built-in corner cabinets are reconfigured to artfully flank the dining room. And tin salvaged from the roof of the old garage now handsomely covers substantial awnings in the back of the house. Saving old features and turning them into new functions for a home is an art local real estate agent Patti Hinkle and her husband, Steve, have refined over the years. Patti and Steve lived in this Morningside home during the three-year renovation and now have the 5-bedroom, 3.5 bath property listed for sale. They plan to move on to their next project, but first we asked Patti a few questions about this latest.

Sum it up for us, Patti – what is it about pretty old houses that you love and how many have you renovated? We’ve renovated and sold three pretty old houses from Garden Hills to East Lake and, just this spring, one in Kirkwood. Before that, we renovated five houses in the suburbs. Pretty old houses have their own personality – they’re quirky. They have soul.
Paint Colors “I have to tell you we rarely come up with new and different colors on our own,” says Patti. “Most times we reuse colors from other homes we’ve done or try out ones we’ve seen in model homes. Sometimes, as in the interior here, we go with colors from magazines.”
What original features were you most eager to keep? The doors! Steve wanted this house because of the doors. They’re thicker than most old doors and have the best trim and, of course, wonderful crystal knobs and brass escutcheons. We reused all the original doors. We even moved the swinging door from the old kitchen as the laundry room door. And, I love the old hardwood floors. The grain of the wood is so tight and the boards are usually really long. I also really like plaster walls. A lot of renovators strip a house down to the studs, which I think is for the convenience of the electrician and the plumber. Plasterwork is a dying craft and we need to preserve as much of it as we can. In this house we also worked hard to keep the moldings and had Randall Brothers mill a few new pieces so it would all match.
Interior Walls & Trim: Creamy from Benjamin Moore. We like the tone on tone look of using the same color but in different finishes - flat for walls with semi or high gloss trim and doors. Master Bedroom: Herbivore from Sherwin Williams.Herbivore is such a restful serene color …Downstairs Hall Bath, Upstairs Jack & Jill Bath: Rainwashed from Benjamin Moore. This is one of the best turquoise/blue colors I’ve found. … Rainwashed is also in the laundry. Isn’t that fitting – “rain-washed? Exterior: Relaxed Khaki and Superior Bronze from Sherwin Williams.
The house has a nice flow for parties and plenty of room for everyday living. How did you accomplish that? The architect, Adam Wall of Kronberg Wall, started with a drawing of the existing floor plan. When we looked at it, ideas for opening up the house just started spilling out. One really big idea I had was to move the dining room door to create a “line of sight” that goes all the way from the big double windows in the living room to the new windows in the kitchen. You look pretty settled into this house. Do you sit back on your back patio and have second thoughts about selling this labor of love? Yes, sometimes, but this house is too big for the two of us –it has five bedrooms for crying out loud. Right now, I sit out there and dream about the next one.

“We like to stick with a few colors through the house,” explains Patti. “I think it makes the rooms flow together a little better than using too many colors. And, too, I’ve tried to find a color scheme and stick with it. The 2012 tour will feature three distinctive homes minutes from the heart of Buckhead on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The homes include a Virginia Tidewater style house originally designed by James Mean and renovated and expanded by Norman Askins and Michelle Moody. It is filled with reclaimed bricks, floors and slate for the roof, giving the home a feeling of great age. There’s also a Greek Revival style home originally designed by Clem Ford. It has numerous authentic details and the interior is a blend
of French accents influenced by the owner’s memories of living in France, Louisiana and South Carolina. The interior design is by Karen Menge of Pulliam Morris Interiors. The third home is French style house designed by Summerour and Associates in 2001. The house was designed to fit in the historic neighborhood by using minimal old growth tree disturbance and minimal visual impact on surrounding homes.
