The BeltLine’s Big Year What’s on track for 2017 and beyond By Clare S. Richie

hile 2016 was a busy year for the Atlanta BeltLine, 2017 is shaping up to be one of its biggest yet. “2017 will be a year of very tangible progress for the Atlanta BeltLine. We’ll open the Eastside Trail Extension and the Westside Trail and acquire the remainder of land for the corridor,” said Rob Brawner, Atlanta BeltLine Partnership Executive Director. These gains require a continued commitment from the City of Atlanta and the community “to get to the finish line by 2030.” “The amount of work that lies ahead to complete the BeltLine and maintain what we have far outweighs the work that’s been done,” Brawner emphasized. Brawner’s referring to the land acquisition, design and construction for the remaining trails and parks, and creating the remaining 5,040 mandated affordable housing units. Once completed, the historic 22-mile railroad corridor that circles Downtown will be reborn as a network of public parks, multi-use trails, transit, and affordable housing that connects 45 neighborhoods. This massive project is a public and private team effort. The Atlanta Beltline, Inc. (ABI), the city’s implementation agent that primarily secures public funds and oversees implementation of the trails, parks and transit. “We could not be able to accomplish this project without the leadership of Mayor [Kasim] Reed, and the public funding support from our TAD partners, City of Atlanta, Fulton County, and Atlanta Public Schools,” Paul Morris, ABI’s CEO, shared. ABI works closely with the city departments and Atlanta Beltline Partnership (ABP), a private nonprofit that raises supplementary funds, engages the community in programs on the BeltLine, and promotes partnerships and advocacy around health, housing and economic opportunity to benefit all residents of BeltLine neighborhoods. Here’s a closer look at what’s been accomplished and what’s ahead.

Eastside Trail Extension

More than 1.3 million people have walked, jogged, biked or skated along the Eastside Trail in the past year. C The trail extends for two miles from 10th Street and Monroe Drive to Irwin Street, connecting Piedmont Park, Historic Fourth Ward Park and the Freedom Park trail. Its construction, completed in 2012, cleared 100 acres of kudzu, overgrowth and debris, removed 1,700 tons of contaminated soil and now celebrates more than 600 trees in an arboretum thanks to Trees Atlanta. Enhancements abound on this well-loved trail. You’ll notice more access points, like the one at Ralph McGill Boulevard (near mile marker 10.0) and the BeltLine’s first public plaza next to Ponce City Market. This month, the fourth prototype bench will be on display. Based on community feedback, one of the four local artist benches will be chosen as the signature bench placed throughout the corridor. And a new permanent sculpture near the stainless steel “33 Oaks” installation at 725 Ponce is coming in 2017. The extension, projected to open in late summer 2017, will add another 1.25 miles from Irwin Street to Kirkwood Avenue in Reynoldstown. “From Irwin Street, it travels south to DeKalb Avenue, navigates through Krog Street tunnel into Cabbagetown and runs along the CSX Hulsey Yard on Wylie Street,” Morris explained. Design for the .37-mile stretch of Wylie Street calls for a 10-foot multi-use trail on the north side of the road, buffered from traffic by landscaping.

Westside Trail

The Westside Trail is a 3-mile segment that runs from University Avenue in Adair Park to Lena Avenue at Washington Park. A half-mile stretch along White Street will use the existing West End Trail, the spur that runs from Rose Circle Park to Westview Cemetery. This new multi-use trail will include 14 ramp and stair connections (including 11 ADAaccessible ones), a greenway and space for future transit. Once completed, it will connect four schools that serve southwest Atlanta. “Concrete pours have started on the Westside Trail, and we are hoping to finish by late summer 2017,” Morris said. The completion day is at least two years ahead of schedule because of a federal U.S. Department of Transportation Tiger V grant and private funds. At the south end of the trail is the BeltLine’s first urban farm, Aluma Farm at Adair Park. “It’s a demonstration site to learn how to expand urban farming around the BeltLine,” Brawner said. Produce is available for sale there (seasonally and at certain times) and at other city farmer’s markets. “It’s a demonstration site to learn how to expand urban farming around the BeltLine,” Brawner said. Initial work on the 16-acre former state farmer’s market site, known as Murphy’s Crossing, is also underway. As a result of professional, community and resident input, this property has the potential to “create a destination on the Westside that could include economic development opportunities, such as maker spaces and affordable housing,” Brawner explained. In the short term, ABI will stabilize the site with infrastructure and green space until the site development plan is complete.

Southside Trail Design

Design for the Southside Trail, which runs four miles from Glenwood Avenue clockwise to University Avenue at the Westside Trail, is underway. ABI recently held community meetings for resident input on where to locate ramp and stair connections as well as gathering places along the trail. Design is expected to take place well into 2018. Input can still be given to Nathan Soldat, ABI Community Engagement Manager, at nsoldat@atlbeltline.org.

Referenda To Provide Needed Funds

Two sales tax measures, the MARTA referendum and TSPLOST, passed by a strong margin on Nov. 8. The MARTA referendum added a half-penny sales tax, which for the BeltLine will support constructing and operating the Atlanta Streetcar System Plan in the loop and four new rail stations along the BeltLine (Armour Yard, Boone Boulevard, Murphy Crossing and Krog Street). The TSPLOST four-tenths-cent sales tax increase is estimated to generate $66 million for ABI to purchase the remaining right of way for the 22-mile loop and provide lighting for its multi-use trails. “I can’t overstate how important it is to the ultimate development of the project to secure the remaining corridor,” Brawner said. “Once we have land we can go after money to clean it up, design and build.” As more of the corridor is acquired, look for more hiking trails like the one from Piedmont Park to Ansley Mall to open. The next step is for MARTA and the city to prioritize projects and timing. “Ideally, we’ll have projects identified that can begin in April 2017 after first quarter sales tax revenue is collected,” Morris said, noting that the projects are eligible for federal matching grants.

The New York Times recently reported what many already suspected: Home prices have risen in formerly overlooked working-class neighborhoods near the BeltLine. In 2005, Atlanta City Council legislatively-mandated a 25-year goal of 5,600 units in the BeltLine Tax Allocation District (TAD), the specific geographic area designated in the 2005 Redevelopment Plan. To date, 2,000 units of affordable housing have been created by ABI, Atlanta Housing Authority, Invest Atlanta and the State Department of Community Affairs in the BeltLine Planning Area, a .5-mile area on either side of the BeltLine corridor. But only 560 units, or 10 percent of the initial goal, have been built within the smaller TAD. “It’s been slow going because during the recent recession the TAD didn’t raise as much and no one was building,” Morris said. “We reset our game plan,” Morris explained. “Over the next three years, ABI will invest $15 million to $20 million in the preservation and creation of affordable housing, down payment assistance, developer incentives, funding for land acquisition and owner occupied rehabilitation, to support an additional 425 to 600 units.” Morris and Brawner agreed that affordable housing is a citywide issue, and that a combination of policies and funding is needed to address it. Some of their ideas include working with public and private partners on inclusionary zoning, land trusts and land banks. The Atlanta City Council is working on a new ordinance that establishes an inclusionary housing requirement for new rental developments in the Beltline Overlay District to allow low- and moderate-income households to buy or rent property in mixed-income environments. Brawner said that ABP could also play a bigger role by raising private funds for affordable housing as it has done for parks and trails. At l a n t a I N t o w n Pa p e r. c o m

Study released on high-speed rail line between Atlanta and Chattanooga The Georgia Department of Transportation has released the results of a study to build a high-speed rail line between Atlanta and Chattanooga. The study offers three potential routes with the fastest getting passengers between the two cities in just 88 minutes with trains traveling up to 180 miles per hour. The I-75 Corridor route – identified by the GDOT as the “best performing alternative” – would have eight stations along its 128-mile route at a cost of approximately $8.76 billion. A second alternative would see the train divert from I-75 to Rome, lengthening the route to 150 miles and adding 15 minutes to the travel time. A third “worst performing alternative” would see the train divert east and add seven minutes to the trip. City takes over four golf courses after rejecting nonprofit’s $15 million bid

By John Ruch The city has taken over management of four golf courses — including Buckhead’s North Fulton course — after twice rejecting a $15 million bid from the nonprofit Atlanta Public Golf Conservancy, a decision that the bidder says left it “flabbergasted” and wondering about a “hidden agenda.” Now the city is operating the courses with a “skeleton crew” and without such upgrades as a new North Fulton clubhouse, according to Conservancy trustee Whitney Crouse. The Nov. 1 management change, which the city has not fully explained, apparently was triggered by the controversial shift of Buckhead’s Bobby Jones Golf Course in October to state ownership for a reconstruction plan. American Golf Corporation, which managed the city courses for more than 30 years, ended its contract due to the financial implications of Bobby Jones leaving the management portfolio, according to Marty Elgison, president of the Bobby Jones Golf Course Foundation, the nonprofit now managing the course. “The package of the four [city] courses without Bobby Jones wasn’t economically viable to them,” said Elgison, adding that the change has added to confusion about Bobby Jones’ now separate operations. Bobby Jones is still open and will remain in operation for another year before renovation work begins, he said.

Last month, the city announced that American Golf was ending its contract for the city courses—which also include Brown’s Mill, Candler Park and Alfred “Tup” Holmes — after declining to participate in a competitive bidding process. But city officials have repeatedly not answered or responded to questions about why the contract was rebid, who else bid and who is running the courses now. American Golf could not immediately be reached for comment. On Oct. 31, the day American Golf ’s contract ended, city Parks Commissioner Amy Phuong issued a statement that suggested a city takeover of the golf course management, announcing the hiring of Arthur Culbreath as an “Interim Head Whitney Crouse of Golf Operations.” Culbreath did not respond to questions. Mosaic Clubs & Resorts “Mr. Culbreath will soon have a full team dedicated to golf management and operations working under his direction,” Phuong’s statement said. “We plan to hire current American Golf staff as subcontractors and to assign some of our strongest, most experienced city employees to the team to maintain current service levels. We will also have all the necessary equipment in place for patrons to use and for the [Parks and Recreation] Department to maintain our courses.” Phuong’s statement did not mention the conservancy’s twice-rejected bid, which proposed, among other upgrades, new clubhouses at North Fulton, Brown’s Mill and “Tup” Holmes. Whitney Crouse, a conservancy trustee and chairman of the Alpharetta-based Mosaic Clubs & Resorts, said the city’s statements have masked confusion and “panic” about the golf course management and mystery about why the conservancy’s bids were rejected. Mosaic manages several golf courses in metro Atlanta, and is serving as the short-term manager at Bobby Jones.

Nonprofit bid rejected

The Brookhaven-based conservancy formed several years ago with the idea of possibly managing city golf courses one day. A nonprofit with a diverse membership, the organization’s intent is to put profits back into the courses, according to Crouse. While Crouse’s company Mosaic is a for-profit, he said Mosaic and other members joined the conservancy “just out of love of the game and to do something for the city and especially for minority kids.” The conservancy got its chance a year ago, when it became clear that American Golf was concerned about the Bobby Jones ownership change, Crouse said. The city sought bids and the conservancy and Mosaic submitted one proposing $15 million in upgrades and a lease payment of $150,000 a year for the first five years, escalating to more than $550,000 a year after 20 years. The conservancy turned out to be the only bidder, likely because most of the courses are too “distressed” to attract for-profit management companies, Crouse said. But the city “canceled the bid under the guise they couldn’t accept [only] one bid,” he said, adding the conservancy does not believe that to be true. The city then asked American Golf to remain as manager, but that company said no, Crouse said. That created a problem, he said, because American Golf owned all of the courses’ equipment, from golf carts to computer systems. “We told [city officials] the city would have to come up with $1 million cash” to equip the courses and keep them open, and officials “freaked out,” Crouse said. The city then opened a second bidding process in September of this year, and the conservancy was again the only bidder. “And the city said no, which left us absolutely flabbergasted,” Crouse said, adding that

the city has not explained its decision. “We didn’t even get a phone call from Amy Phuong. ... There wasn’t even a thank-you. “We are still trying to figure it out. It left some of my board members pretty pissed at the city,” Crouse said. The city again “panicked,” Crouse said, and again unsuccessfully asked American Golf to remain. In what is apparently a permanent move, he said, the city was left to run the courses itself.

Future of city, Bobby Jones courses

“The city stepped in Nov. 1 with a skeleton crew, having to replace everything, with no experience in doing this,” Crouse said. “It left all of us in the golf industry scratching our heads about, ‘What is the hidden agenda here?’” The courses remain open under city management, but such issues as staffing levels are unclear. Phone calls to the North Fulton course’s managers were not answered, in some cases routing to voicemail boxes that were full and not accepting messages. Meanwhile, Bobby Jones is moving ahead under its own, separate nonprofit leadership under the foundation, with Mosaic as the short-term contracted management company. Amid all the Atlanta golf course management confusion, Elgison issued a press release emphasizing that Bobby Jones remains open as usual for the next year. Elgison said the foundation might have considered keeping American Golf as manager at Bobby Jones if a deal between the company and the city for the other courses had worked out, though he added, “They were never friendly with us. ... We didn’t have a warm and fuzzy feeling.” He also expressed surprise, partly due to his knowledge of Crouse and Mosaic, over the city’s rejection of the conservancy’s bid. He called the bid “fantastic” and the “right thing to do.” “I couldn’t tell you in a million years why the city decided to do what it did,” he said.

Trees Atlanta recently got some help planting trees from freshman students at The Walker School. The students were taking part in a “Character Cornerstone Day” as part of the school’s unique Ninth Grade Experience program. The program is designed to prepare students for success in high school and beyond. The James M. Cox Foundation has announced a $2.8 million grant to the Atlanta Speech School to expand access to the Cox Campus and provide more learning materials. The campus provides free, online access to professional development for teachers of children from birth to eight years of age. Chris Carlos, son of the late Michael C. Carlos, for whom the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Emory University is named, has committed $3 million to name the museum’s education center. It will be named the Thalia N. Carlos Education Center, in memory of Carlos’ mother, who was also a longtime supporter of the museum. Alvetta Peterman Thomas has left Atlanta Technical College to become president of Southern Crescent Technical College effective Dec. 1. As Atlanta Technical College’s president since 2008, Dr. Thomas oversaw the expansion of student services, corporate partnerships, global initiatives, program offerings, facilities improvements and financial support of the college.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS Legislation introduced by Atlanta City Councilmember Felicia Moore will see 14 additional security cameras installed in District 9. The council approved $181,359.72 being used from Moore’s carry forward account to have the Atlanta Police Foundation install, maintain and operate the new cameras. This is the second round of cameras Moore has funded with the first round being approved by council in May of this year. The police foundation started installing pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras and license plate readers (LPRs) throughout the city with plans of having as many as 12,000 devices at various locations as part of their Operation Shield program. A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) will be in Atlanta Dec. 5-8 to examine all aspects of the Atlanta Police Department policy and procedures, management, operations and support services. As a part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. The session will be conducted in the City Council Chambers located in City Hall, 55 Trinity Ave. If you cannot attend, call (478) 550-0512 on Dec. 6 between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. to leave your comments. To date, the department has provided more than 80,000 car seats to families across the city, illustrating the continued need for this life-saving service in the community. New Vision Renderings show revamped Turner Field as home for GSU Panthers The Georgia Board of Regents has unanimously approved a $52.8 million plan by Georgia State University to transform Turner Field and nearby properties into football and baseball stadiums surrounded by a mixed-use development. GSU has agreed to buy The Ted for $30 million by the end of this year and will work with development company Carter to create an extension of the Downtown campus with classroom space, student housing, retail and private homes. The total cost of the project has been projected at $300 million. GSU released new renderings of the revamped Turner Field and launched a website for the project: stadium.gsu.edu.

Reading Circle opens at Piedmont Park The Piedmont Park Conservancy has just finished the installation of the park’s new Reading Circle, which was funded by the Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club. The reading circle offers book lovers and families a quaint space containing 27 bench-like stones surrounding a Red Oak tree. The position next to the 12th street entrance allows for easy access for local residents as well as small children who might not be able to trek the entire park. “The Midtown Rotary Club has partnered with the Conservancy for smaller projects like planting trees and shrubs. Intowners concerned about cats and dogs in Atlanta animal shelters have a reason to be optimistic. Best Friends Animal Society, the national organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters, is here. To promote the no-kill movement in the southeast, Atlanta Pet Rescue and Adoption (APRA) has joined Best Friends Animal Society and is now Best Friends – Atlanta. “We’re thrilled. It’s a good fit for both,” said Best Friends – Atlanta communications director Rachel Pomberg. “APRA was a (Best Friends) network partner for many years. In 16 years APRA saved 19,000 animals. That work will continue and now Best Friends has a regional center to increase work in the southeast.” Both share the same philosophy, but Best Friends brings to the rebranded pet adoption center the resources of a national organization that works collaboratively to reduce the number of animals entering shelters and increase the number who find homes. Since its founding in 1984, Best Friends has helped reduce the number of animals killed in American shelters from 17 million per year to an estimated 4 million. Best Friends is no stranger to the city. It has been collaborating in the region for more than a decade with 23 network partners in greater Atlanta. In February, it launched a community cat program with Cobb County Animal Control that has sustained a save rate of 90 percent up from 50-60 percent for the same period in 2015. Best Friends – Atlanta center is poised to play a critical role in the national organization’s bold goal. “Our ultimate mission is to the end killing of dogs and cats in U.S. shelters by 2025,” Judah Battista, a second-generation co-founder and local city programs director, explained. “The best way to reach the southeast is to be here – what better place than Atlanta?” Best Friends - Atlanta will prioritize the adoption of at-risk animals from shelters in Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb and Gwinnett counties while developing a local coalition. Once these four counties have at least a 90 percent save rate, Best Friends-Atlanta will expand to other counties until the no-kill movement has spread throughout Georgia and the Southeast. Post-election jitters, family style At 1:30 a.m. on election night I told Kristen we better get to bed. As upset as we were with the outcome, we needed to wake up in the morning, be parents and go to work. We wondered what we would say to the kids. Of course the next day there were many articles online covering that very topic, but I couldn’t even stomach them. Over breakfast that Wednesday morning, I was laboring through an “everything is going to be OK” talk with the kids when the lights went out. Not figuratively, literally. The power went out in our neighborhood. It seemed ominous and I think #ThanksTrump was officially birthed in Oakhurst. It turned out to just be a transformer that the Russians blew up in celebration of the election results though so, phew. Shortly before the election I drafted a farcical yarn about how as a member of the “crooked media,” I was part of a cabal that rigged the election. It was me, Oprah, Larry King and Wolf Blitzer.

Margo shrugged it off in a way to remind me that she’s 7 and she shouldn’t worry about these things. She’s right. Sometimes when one of the kids get hurt, a skinned knee or elbow, I’ll tell them to squeeze my hand and give the pain to me – I’ll absorb it for them because I’m bigger and stronger. My main takeaway from the election is that Kristen and I, and millions of parents, just absorbed a whole lot of worry.

A new smartphone app created at Atlanta Tech Village has launched to help motorists who receive traffic tickets get legal help. Atticus connects drivers with lawyers who can help, even if they’re already at the courthouse awaiting their turn before a judge. Atticus charges a flat fee of $249 to hire an attorney. The weather is going to make the decision, not politics.” Earlier this year, the city of Atlanta was chosen to be a member of 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) from more than a thousand applications submitted to the Rockefeller Foundation, which pioneered the initiative three years ago. The foundation’s goal: to help urban

areas around the world become more resilient to growing challenges of the 21st Century. 100RC views resilience as the ability to overcome stresses that weaken the fabric of a city on a daily basis, such as high unemployment, a poor public transportation system and chronic food and water shortages – not just shocks such as earthquakes, fires and floods. In November, Stephanie Stuckey Benfield, the city’s director of sustainability, was promoted to the new position of chief resilience officer. In announcing Benefield’s new role, Reed said: “The idea is that you have someone who wakes up every day thinking about the short-, medium- and long-term response to stressers that impact cities.” The Rockefeller Foundation provides selected cities with financial and expert resources necessary to develop a roadmap to urban resilience and a global practice of resilience in four key areas: health and wellbeing; economy and society; infrastructure and environment; and leadership and strategy. We are fortunate to live in a city where leaders like Mayor Reed, Stephanie Benfield and others are working hard to help us all get ready for change. While they are busy with the big stuff, I’ll be in my back yard, replacing non-native plants with more tolerant native species and repairing the rock stream channel I built to handle the flooding when the rains return.

Atlanta City Councilmember Michael Julian Bond in partnership with the Keep Atlanta Beautiful Commission completed a successful scrap tire collection drive in November that removed more than 1,500 tires from overgrown lots, rivers and streams throughout the city. The campaign was also co-sponsored by the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM), the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, the Department of Public Works and Liberty Tires.

The City of Atlanta has announced the launch of Clean Streets, a recycling program created by the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, the Department of Public Works and Keep Atlanta Beautiful to properly dispose of cigarette waste in Downtown and promote the city’s zero waste goals. In partnership with the Atlanta Downtown City officials gathered downtown for the installation of a new cigarette ash Improvement receptacle. District (ADID) and TerraCycle – an organization which partners with municipalities to bring recycling solutions, the city is installing 50 cigarette butt and ash receptacles in highly-traveled sidewalk areas throughout Downtown. All cigarette waste collected in the Clean Streets program will be sent to TerraCycle, which will then donate $1 for every pound of cigarette butts recycled to Keep America Beautiful to fund and administer litter prevention programs. EcoHome Atlanta, featuring home furnishings and fine gifts with a focus on sustainable and healthy luxury products, is now open in Buckhead at 3261 Roswell Road. The shop occupies 1,250 square feet in the same building as SuperGreen Solutions. Donated land to become food, education source By Mario Cambardella Urban Agriculture Director for the City of Atlanta Recently, the city announced the acquisition of 7.1 acres of land in Southeast Atlanta to become a Community Food Forest. The Browns Mill Food Forest will be the pilot program for the concept of a food forest, a first for the City of Atlanta. Food forests, in addition to providing a food source, develop ecological literacy by teaching people how plants grow and by helping foster a connection to the cultural and social history of a community through its plants. The pilot program is funded by the U.S. Forest Service’s Community Forest Program grants to support communities across the U.S. to secure community forests. The Community Forest Program provides financial assistance grants to local governments, tribes and qualified nonprofit organizations working to establish community forests with a focus on economic and environmental benefits, education, forest stewardship, and recreation opportunities. We applied for the grant with the goal of providing a community gathering outdoor space that would help improve access to fresh produce. Under Mayor Reed, Atlanta intends to reduce “food deserts” in the city by 75 percent by 2020. The Browns Mill Food Forest will be an example of agroforestry, a form of agriculture that combines trees and shrubs with agricultural land uses to create more diverse, sustainable, healthy and productive land. The food forest would incorporate the existing historical and culturally relevant crops that would have grown in Atlanta’s recent agrarian past. In fact, the site of the Browns Mill Food Forest was a working farm as recently as 2000. Neighbors still talk about Ruby and Willie Morgan’s farm and how the family would leave bags of their local produce on their fence posts for their neighbors to enjoy. We’ve continued that neighborly focus by engaging with the community throughout the planning, acquisition and continued growth of our food forest. We went door to door to hear stories and thoughts about the project so that no one would be left out. Our kickoff in November was well attended, and we provided tours of what’s currently growing on site and what other native food producing plants we could also add. Michael Murphy, community forest manager for the U.S. Forest Service’ Southeast region, tells us that “the food forest is a very interesting concept and because the land is in the middle of a neighborhood, it’s a really good fit for what [is] in mind.” We want to continue to have that neighbor-oriented focus throughout the implementation of this concept and life of the food forest. We will have additional opportunities for community engagement. The Secret Spot

Abandoned building in EAV becomes art space By Isadora Pennington This is the story of an odd little building. More than that, it’s the story of the man inside – an artist by the name of Carl Janes. Tucked away on a mostly vacant lot in East Atlanta sits The Secret Spot, a charming and inconspicuous building that seems a little out of place among the bars and neighborhoods nearby. The building at 538 Flat Shoals Ave. has had an interesting evolution throughout the years. It was originally built to be a barbecue joint in the 1950s, before being converted to a locksmith shop. The building still has remnants from those prior establishments, like the barbecue pit and counter, but the space now has a new life as an art space. These days, The Secret Spot, as it’s been dubbed, is known for housing the work of Janes as well as providing an outlet for the artistic expression of others. “We were hanging out at The Earl, and came around this corner when I saw the for sale sign,” Janes recalled. At the time, the space had seen better days. Trash strewn about the property, graffiti and potholes in the parking lot were evidence the building’s untended past. Indeed, it had been all but forgotten for more than five years, and left to the elements and vagrants without much hope for revitalization. That was until Janes saw it. “I’ve got to figure out how to do something with it,” he decided. Today, Janes has coordinated art that covers the long wall stretching alongside the property, contributed by local artists such as Squishiepuss and Catlanta. The building is painted gold, and adorned with artwork both inside and out. Local bands like Hello Ocho and Cousin Dan have performed on the roof, pleasing eager crowds gathered in the grass surrounding the building. Events are posted on The Secret Spot’s Facebook page. For Janes, even the building itself is a work of art. The property has served as a haven for his never-ending personal projects, and has provided him an outlet for connecting more with other artists who call Atlanta home. “As an artist, it’s important to stay as free as possible,” he ruminated, noting that he wanted to “create a context where other people can set themselves free.” Originally hailing from Charleston, S.C., Janes’ young life was marked by a steady stream of transition. His father was in the Navy, and as such he lived in many places around the world, from places as exotic as the Philippines, Europe and Yugoslavia to major metropolitan cities in the US such as New York and Los Angeles. It was a chance meeting with an eclectic art enthusiast, someone who embodied a sort of Willy Wonkaesque love for artistic expression, who convinced a young Janes to give Atlanta a chance nearly 10 years ago. Walking into The Secret Spot is like stepping into a time capsule, or maybe some kind of feverish dream. Artwork hangs on the walls of the front room, some still in various stages of progress. Tins of paint and spraypaint cans are stacked haphazardly just out of the way of the front door, easily accessible but not in the way. A shrine to President John F. Kennedy welcomes every visitor, its silver dollar eyes staring down each newcomer as they enter. There are oddities everywhere, from the pile of school globes resting in the corner, to the clippings from old magazines pressed under glass on top of the desk. As an artist, Janes has an affinity for mixing nostalgia, modes of currency, and pop culture with sociopolitical issues. There are several works in addition to the shrine that touches on the death of JFK, for example, and an illustration of Martin Luther King Jr. sitting on an easel adjacent to the desk. A projector sits in the space that used to be a walk-up counter, the faces of Abraham Lincoln and Sitting Bull shining onto the front door and windows. You may have also seen Janes’ moniker, Future Ancestors, predominantly associated with murals or art exhibits in local galleries. This concept came to him when waking from a dream, and it touches on a lot of his personal opinions about existence as framed within a timeline that spans the past and future. The phrase encourages the viewer to consider the fact that they themselves might be someone’s and maybe many peoples’ ancestor one day, and how does that make you consider how you engage with the world today? How are you affected by your own family history and ancestry? Those questions run like a vein through Janes’ work, and act as a backbone to his mission as an artist. As for the secrecy surrounding his art space, it’s something that happened naturally and has since served to keep things interesting. “The mystery is here for me, too. It’s totally a dream,” he said.

Woodruff Arts Center surpasses transformation campaign goal The Woodruff Arts Center’s Transformation Campaign has finished with a flourish, surpassing its original $100 million goal by $10 million. The Woodruff is home to The Alliance Theatre, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the High Museum of Art. The Coca-Cola Company made a multi-million dollar donation to support the renovation of The Alliance Theatre, one of the primary goals of the campaign. In recognition, the Alliance’s main stage will be named The Coca-Cola Stage at The Alliance Theatre when the renovated theater opens in the fall of 2018. The City of Atlanta made a $1 million contribution, as well as the Delta Air Lines Foundation pledging $2.5 million to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Musicians’ Endowment Fund to help the orchestra reach a $25 million goal to permanently endow 11 musician positions. The Woodruff campaign focused on three areas: endowment funding, capital improvements – primarily for the Alliance Theatre renovation – and funding for expanded family-oriented programming and greater activation of the Arts Center’s campus. “The success of our Campaign speaks volumes about the generosity of our donors and the importance of the arts to our community,” said Doug Hertz, chairman of the Woodruff Arts Center Board of Trustees. “On behalf of everyone who worked on this campaign, I want to say ‘Thank You’ to our donors for everything they have done.” Anne Cox Chambers served as honorary chair of the Transformation Campaign and Mr. Hertz as the Campaign chair. Sweet Holiday Treats ’Tis the season for cupcakes, fudge and more By Isadora Pennington

his holiday season always brings back memories of my grandparents’ house. Without fail each year my grandmother, Ouida, would break out her holiday plates and serving dishes for our family meals, and her living room would transform into a winter wonderland of miniature proportions. She had an extensive collection of porcelain snow-capped buildings that lit up with a soft glow when plugged in, all clustered together atop fluffy fake snow on side tables. I can recall a few that moved, tiny figurines dancing gracefully across a mirrored frozen lake, their tiny world so pure and jovial, while my uncle’s train set wound lazily around the base of the tree and my grandfather’s Christmas albums played in the background. For me, one of the things that brings me back to the innocence of my youth is sweets. Luckily, Intown has an abundance of local shops that offer everything from candy and cupcakes to pastries and even a pie in a jar! In other words, treat yourself. ’Tis the season, after all!

Tea of Immortality Local kombucha maker launches business Golda Kombucha founder Melanie Wade.

By Isadora Pennington Kombucha, a sweetened and fermented tea beverage, has a long and rather mysterious history. The ancient Chinese used to refer to it as the “Tea of Immortality,” and it was for a time regarded as a sacred elixir that was available only to royalty. Though the exact origin of kombucha is hotly contested and quite vague, evidence suggests that it was being consumed in Russia as far back as 1900, and soon after it became popular in Europe. It wasn’t until the 1990s that this ancient recipe became commercially available in America, and only in recent years has kombucha become a familiar household name. The process to make kombucha consists of fermenting teas using a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, more commonly referred to as a SCOBY or a “mother.” This living colony is introduced to the tea and allowed to ferment over time, which it does by consuming the sugars in the tea. It’s this process that produces the fizzy, tangy flavor that kombucha is known for. Brewers can then add flavors and tweak their recipes in order to affect the taste of their drinks. “I was making it at home for a long time,” explained Melanie Wade, founder of Atlanta’s first local kombucha company, Golda Kombucha. “My grandma started making it a long time ago, like 40 years ago, and I grew up around it but I never knew exactly what it was.” Intrigued by the recipe, it was during a visit to her grandmother’s house in Virginia that Wade found herself considering the beverage with renewed interest. Pulling books from the shelves and asking her grandmother about her process, she quickly learned everything she could about the drink. “The first time I ever had it, I drank a little bit and I was up all night,” she laughed, noting that the natural processes produce Vitamin B12, which is known to be a natural, and potent, energy boost. When heading back home again, she brought one of her grandmother’s mother cultures with her and put it in a small, 2-gallon oak barrel on her kitchen counter, and soon she was experimenting with flavors. Wade gave some away to her friends, used

some to barter, and started providing it at her booths when she was selling handmade jewelry at farmer’s markets and festivals. The drink was instantly popular, and it wasn’t long before Wade realized she was onto something, and she set out to start her own company, Golda Kombucha. “Golda is my grandma, she’s 95 and doing awesome. She still drives her own car, she still mows her own grass, she plants veggies in her backyard and cans them, she’s just like this wonder woman and I think it’s because she drinks Kombucha every day,” Wade said. There are many purported health benefits associated with the tonic, and Wade is a firm believer in its healing properties. The drink is most known for being a probiotic, which introduces good bacteria to your gut, and helps with energy consumption from the food you eat. “A lot of people, because they drink kombucha every day, they actually feel this sense of euphoria, happiness, and mental clarity,” said Wade. Now in it’s third year, Golda Kombucha is growing by leaps and bounds, not only in popularity, but also in the scale of its production and distribution. The tonic had been available in only three core flavors; Strawberry Mint, Peach Ginger and Lavender Lemon. Recently, Wade has introduced several more new flavors, including Blackberry Basil, Elderberry Thyme, Hibiscus Blood Orange and Coffee. The drink is also being picked up left and right throughout the Southeast, and can be found in not only small shops, but also increasingly in major players of the grocery industry. In November, Golda Kombucha will be available in 70 to 90 Kroger stores across Georgia. Their existing account with Whole Foods is also growing to include more locations, and they are in many holistic and general stores throughout the Southeast. n the past two years, the Castellucci Hospitality Group has opened Cooks & Soldiers in West Midtown, shuttered Double Zero Napolitana in Sandy Springs, opened a revised Double Zero concept in Emory Village, and announced plans to fill the Cockentrice vacancy in Krog Street Market. The original Double Zero location was meant for families,

business lunches and lovers of authentic Neapolitan pizza. They ran bocce ball tournaments on the patio out back, and while the place may have been salvation for suburbanites seeking great wine and lovely plates while stuck with kids in tow, C there was something about the cavernous gray space that never felt quite like home for a family as warm and colorful as the Castelluccis. So they decamped for the more boisterous and crowded environs of campus life at Emory Village, occupying the old Ink & Elm space. After knocking down a bunch of walls to properly let in the sun, CHG also knocked down some of its own sense of refined traditionalism and chose instead to offer a more eclectic menu of small plates. You can still get really excellent pizza at Double Zero, and with Slice & Pint next door, the kitchen has been ramping up its creativity to offer pies that go D beyond the usual. We ordered a sausage and pear pizza where the pork sausage was local, the pears were lightly pickled, and the basil was super bright. If you want a plate all to yourself, DZ continues to do fresh pastas that suit the seasons. We tried the mafalde pasta, with mushrooms, peas and fennel, and well as the tortelli with butternut squash, apple butter, walnuts and pickled apples. B version of the burrata, and DZ’s goes all-in on the wintry delights of plum slices and scallion pesto. It’s a sweet but sassy interpretation with a nice sourdough bread and a fluffy cheese, a classic dish with unfussy modern updating. For the more adventurous, there’s the oxtail. Finely cut and not at all tough, the protein luxuriates in a bed of celery root puree, layered under frisee greenery and shredded Greek kataifi dough, then garnished with grapefruit. A finely textured and thoroughly playful vision of a shepherd’s pie, this dish that truly shows the forward thinking going on in the kitchen. As for dessert, look beyond the flourless chocolate cake to the butterscotch budino and the pine nut tart, each $7. Budino is basically pudding in a jar, but it’s so thick and richly creamy that two people can share it and be full before reaching the bottom of the jar. The pine nut tart is an utterly more palatable adaptation of pecan pie, all the texture with a mercifully reduced sweetness. Did I mention the cocktails? Bless the bar manager, Nicholas Dolby, for hilarious names like the Stregasaurus, delicious riffs like the Architect’s old fashioned, and surreal new seasonals like El Pistolero. The Castellucci Hospitality Group has already proven that its brand of high-quality service translates from the family crowd at Sugo in John’s Creek to the close-knit community of Decatur at Iberian Pig. Double Zero, like Emory Village, boasts a firm sense of self alongside a laudable desire to innovate. Award-Winning Architecture AIA Atlanta honors architects for home designs AIA Atlanta, the Atlanta chapter of the American Institute of Architects has handed out its 2016 Residential Design Awards. Projects are judged based on their individual merits with respect to innovative materiality, sustainability and efficiency, creative response to the context, and responsiveness to changing political challenges. Fountain Hall at Morris Brown College represents one of these numerous landmarks. Founded in 1881, Morris Brown College is recognized as one of the few HBCU’s, or Historically Black Colleges & Universities, founded by African-Americans. The three-story Fountain Hall, designed by architect Gottfried Leonard Norrman, was completed in 1882 as an administrative building for the college. Norrman served in 1892 as a founder of the Southern Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He also helped to establish the Atlanta Chapter of this professional organization By Melody Harclerode in 1906. His design talents can also be seen at Ivy Hall, the SCAD building constructed in 1885 as the Edward Peters residence. Melody L. Hall to assess the architectural and engineering costs for renovating this structure. Morris Brown College President Stanley J. Atlantic House, the 32-story luxury high rise apartment tower on the corner of 14th and West Peachtree streets in Midtown, welcomed its first residents in November. The 407 apartment homes range in size from studio to two-bedrooms. Amenities include two roof-top pools, fitness center, clubroom, outdoor kitchen, business center and outdoor patio space as well as a grilling area, tennis court and dog park on top of the attached parking garage. The project also features more than 13,000 square feet of retail along 14th and West Peachtree streets, with Einstein’s Bagels, Caribou and McCray’s Tavern scheduled to open in early 2017. A proposed 74-story residential building in Midtown, which would become Atlanta’s second tallest building behind Bank of America Tower, has a name: Opus Place. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties’ condo division, City Haus, will handle sales and marketing for the project. The tower is being developed by Olympia Heights Management, with strategic advisors Paul and Louise Sunshine. Architect Richard Meier is working with Perkins + Will on design. The first phase of the development at 98 14th Street would feature the main tower comprised of 382 luxury residential units, 180 corporate suites, 60,370-square-feet of retail, and 825 structured parking spaces.
