EDITOR’S LETTER Collin Kelley March has always been a strange, transitional month for me; not quite winter, not quite spring and not much going on. However, this March seems to be bursting at the seams with events and activities. The Phoenix Flies tour of historic sites is going to be huge this year to mark the 10th anniversary of the annual event. If you love history and are interested in Atlanta’s roots, check out the story on page 4 and be sure to visit atlantapreservationcenter.com to see the full program of events. If you’re a foodie, then put on your eatin’ bib and belly up to the table because there are new restaurants galore that have recently opened or coming in the next couple of months. Gunshow and Saltyard both sound like intriguing dining experiences, so I’ve added them to my list. You can see the full round-up starting on page 28. Speaking of eating, the Junior League Tour of Kitchens will make you hungry not only

for food but to renovate your space. The tour is marking its 16th birthday and will feature kitchens of all sizes as well as chefs from some of Intown’s best restaurants cooking up samples for you to try along the way. Visit page 35 for details. If you get out to one art event this month, make sure it’s Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics and Painting at the High Museum. I attended the press opening with friend and poet Julie Bloemeke (you can read her review of the show at AtlantaINtownPaper.com) and was blown away by the depth and breadth of the exhibition. Kahlo is one of my favorite artists and I’d seen very little of her work in person, so seeing “Broken Column” and “My Dress Hangs Here” up close was a surreal experience. The exhibition continues through May 12. While you’re reading the March issue, we’re already at work on our 7th annual Green Issue coming in April. We’re going to be featuring “green homes” in Atlanta, and want photos of your eco-friendly designed dwelling. A DECADE OF HISTORY Phoenix Flies celebrates milestone with 16 days of tours By Collin Kelley, Editor The Atlanta Preservation Center is making history of its own this month with the Decennial Phoenix Flies: A City-Wide Celebration of Living Landmarks from March 9-24. This unique celebration of Atlanta’s historic assets will present more than 200 free events in 16 days. These events include walking tours, guided tours, bicycle tours, performances and exhibits at more than 80 sites

significant to Atlanta’s historic and cultural fabric. A Look Back Ann Taylor Boutwell March 1, 1992: Georgia Women of Achievement (GWA) held its first induction ceremony at Wesleyan College in Macon. Recognizing women’s vital role in Georgia’s history, First Lady Rosalyn Carter was honored for creating the concept in 1988. During the past 21 years, the program has recognized 77 honorees. March 7, 1914: Playwright Lollie Belle Wylie’s prizing winning one-act play, The Golden Goose, premiered at the Lyric Theater at Carnegie Way. The setting of Wylie’s farce was the new Ponce DeLeon Apartments, then at 555 Peachtree Street. On March 14, 2013 Lollie Belle Wylie will be recognized as a Georgia Woman of Achievement. March 16, 1913: Nine movie theaters opened their doors on Sunday for the first time. Community leaders held mixed opinions on the issue. The Chamber of Commerce was in favor because the lack of Sunday entertainment was hurting business. That Sunday afternoon, over 44,000 attended performances at the motion picture houses. Atlanta Police Chief James L. Beavers toured the popular 5 cent theaters along Peachtree and Whitehall streets – Alcazar, Alamo, Bonita, Lyric, Majestic, Montgomery, Orpheum, Savoy and Vaudette. On Monday, a few church- goers reported that the movies did not interfere with their Sunday worship.

March 23, 1987: Completion notice for the $11.8 million renovation of the 16-story Healey Building at 57 Forsyth Street was set for early April 1987. The office building would eventually be transformed into condos by 2001. The building was designed by well-known architects Thomas Henry Morgan, John Robert Dillon and Walter Thomas Downing and opened in 1913. Both the Healey Building and nearby Kessler department store building (pictured), also condos, are celebrating their centennial. Both buildings will be part of this year’s Phoenix Flies events. See the story on page 4 or visit atlantapreservationcenter.com/phoenix_flies. March 25, 1932: Changing the community of Buckhead’s name to something more highfalutin again became an issue. Six years earlier, a large group of Buckhead citizens petitioned the Fulton County Commissioner to change the name to “Northwood.” Luckily, the attempts to change the name all failed. Buckhead was created in1838, when South Carolinian Henry Irby and wife, Georgia native Sardis Walraven, bought and settled on 202-plus acres of land around the present Peachtree, Roswell and West Paces Ferry roads. Buckhead (Atlanta) will celebrate 175th anniversary on March 1 at the Buckhead Theater. For more about the event, visit buckheadheritage.com.

For many high school students, writing anything over140 characters — not to mention actually spelling out all the words — can be drudgery. But basic writing skills are crucial to success in school and beyond. According to a 2010 Carnegie Corporation report, 40 percent of high school graduates lack the literacy skills employers seek. Oneon-one help can be tremendously effective, but already-overtaxed teachers rarely have time to provide it. The Writing Center at Grady High School (WC) seeks to bridge that gap and provide extra support for Grady students with any type of writing project for school, work, or pleasure. The WC, one of the few writing centers in a public school in Georgia, is now in its fifth year of operation. In the fall of 2008, the nonprofit Grady High School Foundation funded the center’s opening to actively engage students with the reminder that writing skills are determining factor in careers and the backbone of clear and organized thinking. The center now also relies on funding from the Boys’ High School Alumni Association, the Harper Foundation, the Ray and Elizabeth Lee Foundation, and individual donations. Every Monday through Thursday after school, all Grady students are welcome to drop in at the WC, which is located inside the school’s media center. They come for a variety of reasons: for guidance on a research paper topic, for help editing a college admission essay, or for feedback on a personal project such as a short story, poem, comic book or song lyric. (They’re on their own, however, for tweets.) Whatever the project, a staff of volunteers are there to help, led by parttime coordinator Riki Bolster, who taught journalism at Grady for 19 years and was faculty advisor for The Southerner, the school newspaper, and Grady News Network. “The act of writing is such a scary thing for many people,” says Bolster. “I want to demystify the writing process. We often begin just by talking and then help students dip into their creativity to become better writers and interested readers.” WC volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. Seth Hagan, for example, a volunteer since 2010, is pursuing a literary studies degree at Georgia State and wants to teach high school English, a far cry from his earlier career as a New York tax attorney. As a student himself, Seth is

sympathetic with the pain involved in “taking the knife out and doing surgery on a piece,” but by helping students understand the process of writing, through brainstorming, draft, and revisions, he hopes to challenge their “notion of writing as sitting down with a blank page and coming out with something brilliant.” Husband and wife volunteers Robby and Krista Russell are parents of ninth grade twins at Grady and have been helping at the WC weekly since August. Robby, a freelance copywriter, and Krista, a young adult novelist, call the WC a “great resource for the students and a unique volunteer opportunity for a writer.” The WC is always looking for new volunteers; you can contact them through their website, gradywc.org. In December, the WC sponsored a poetry workshop for teacher Deedee Abbott’s Literary Magazine class, in which Georgia poet Rupert Fike led the students through an exercise that, in under an hour, resulted in each student composing a working draft of a poem. In late January the WC hosted their annual playwriting workshop, taught by Megan Cramer, Grady alumna and associate artistic director of New York’s 52nd Street Project. The workshop began on a Friday evening, with Ms. Cramer using music to inspire the six student participants to create character sketches. By Saturday afternoon, each student had developed those sketches into a ten-minute, two-character play. The workshop was capped off when professional actors performed the plays on stage, to the delight of the new playwrights. Senior Kelsey Hubbard, a repeat participant in the workshop (and herself a volunteer in the WC), beams, “To see my play come to life on stage by professional actors was incredible!” Such events not only enhance writing skills but also help create and strengthen the community of student writers at Grady. By the end of the weekend, the participants “were all like this,” Hubbard says, holding up two tightly crossed fingers. Many Grady students have embraced the WC, which logged over 1,000 visits during the fall semester alone. But of all the student writing that Bolster and the WC volunteers see, perhaps none is more meaningful than notes from students, such as one that arrived from a senior after a workshop on writing college essays. SPREADING KNOWLEDGE KIPP school program continues Atlanta expansion By Sydia Bell

KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) opened its first primary school, KIPP Strive, last year. Located in the West End/Westview neighborhood, and with a current enrollment of 112 students in the initial kindergarten class, this marks the first of three planned primary school openings in the coming years. Like all KIPP schools, Strive is a tuition free, public charter school serving communities and students regardless of prior academic record, conduct or socioeconomic background. Located on the same campus of KIPP Strive Academy, serving grades 5-8, the opening is only a part of the future plans for students. Since 2003, with the initial opening of KIPP Ways Academy and the singular Fulton county middle school, KIPP South Fulton Academy, KIPP’s vision has been to provide students an institution that they can progress and develop with a consistent experience and standards from primary through high school. After receiving state approval from the Atlanta Public School System in December, which gives preference to current KIPP students when applying to KIPP Atlanta Collegiate, the hope is that students will continue on with their education at KIPP. For those entering KIPP Strive

Primary it means once they have completed all course work through the 4th grade they can continue on to KIPP Strive Academy from the 5th through 8th grades and then have priority when applying to KIPP Atlanta Collegiate. “If students want to stay with KIPP K-12 they can do that,” said communication director, Jill Joplin. The commitment made to every child is the understanding that the journey doesn’t end when they leave a KIPP school or receive their diplomas. One of their missions is to not only to get kids to college but through college with the help of the KIPP Through College Program. 23rd annual American Craft Council Show returns By Sydia Bell The American Craft Council Show (ACC) is returning to the Cobb Galleria Centre from March 15-17 for its 23rd annual Atlanta Show. More than 240 of the country’s top artisans will exhibit and sell one-of-a-kind jewelry, clothing, furniture and home decor. The three-day event, which draws nearly 10,000 visitors, is an opportunity for collectors and craft enthusiasts alike to meet, explore and become inspired by the best in the industry. This year, the ACC is showcasing the work of four Intowners as they collaborate to transform a blank 10 x 10 white space that reflects the designers’ vision while integrating pre-selected craft piece in the Make Room: Modern Design meets Craft Show. The team includes Michel Boyd, owner of SmithBoyd Interiors, Grant Park resident Bryan Russell and Ormewood Park resident Staffan Svenson with Dencity, and Downtown resident Katherine Dunatov with TVS Interiors. In addition, woodworker Stephen Evans and textile artist Karen Tunnell both make their debuts at the largest juried events of its kind in the Southeast. Evans, a Castleberry Hill resident, was influenced by his mother, an antique dealer, began his career restoring furniture before deciding to build his own. Created largely of reclaimed urban timber commonly found in historic Atlanta neighborhoods, Evans says the ACC

is allowing him to “re-discover his creative drive.” Midtown artist Karen Tunnell will show off her quilts, which have been exhibited across the country. “Being apart of the ACC is as good as it gets,” she says. After devoting herself to crafting full-time over the past five years, Tunnell is excited about displaying some of her most recent work. Influenced by the developing urban communities in Atlanta, Tunnell’s pieces make statements about environmental issues and healthy lifestyles. The ACC Show takes place Friday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, March 17, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One year ago on a sunny winter day, I did something I never thought I would do; I ran a 5k during the Hunger Walk/ Run, benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Despite telling myself since high school that I wasn’t a runner, I decided to give the run a try. My friend and neighbor, Jeremy Smith, had joined my Inspired Walkers & Runners team and raised money as he had for several years prior. Jeremy was an experienced runner, and as before, he

quickly ran ahead once the starting gun went off that beautiful Sunday afternoon. This time it would be the last time I saw him alive. Jeremy was killed in a motorcycle accident just a week later. Jeremy was the kind of person who went out of his way to brighten the lives of those around him, and despite being overloaded with work last year, he came through and raised money for the ACFB as he had done in years past. I’ve thought at length about his legacy of spreading joy in the world, and for this year’s Hunger Walk/Run, I’ve dedicated my

fundraising effort and my run to Jeremy’s memory. I miss Jeremy’s infectious smile and enduring compassion, and I can honestly say the run won’t be the same without him. Still, his memory is alive and well and as I take each step, I will remember the joy he brought to my life and those who were lucky enough to know him. Francophonie Festival is March 16-26

The 14th annual Atlanta Francophonie Festival, a multi-cultural event geared to Atlanta’s diverse community of Frenchspeakers (known as francophones), will be held March 16-26. Just My Imagination I am an artist and I’ve been thinking… People often ask me what inspires me to paint landscape and seascape variations on a vaguely familiar theme. In my head I reply that those scenes are soothing to my nerves in response to inane questions like that one but what I say out loud is that I grew up in sunny California and can’t seem to shake the sand out of my shoes completely no matter how long I’ve lived landlocked in Atlanta. The truth is somewhere in the middle. In my head I truly do feel the rolling waves, see the sun reflecting on the water and hear the sounds of seals shifting restlessly as they nap in the sand. And then of course my mother enters the picture and tells me I should be wearing a sweater and when was the last time I got a haircut. And naturally I ask her what possesses her to think wearing pearls to the beach is a good idea and that if she didn’t still live there I wouldn’t be visiting this place in my head at all. My point is, and I truly do have one, is that we can have a lively imaginary life of sun and fun and still manage get work done somehow. It’s a little like being a functioning schizophrenic or a really masterful multi-tasker or robot because my actions hardly reflect what I’m thinking at all. So, if we meet somewhere and you see me smiling, I might not even be able to see you at all but my mind is having a ball. One reason I think we all (and, yes, I mean everyone who is reading this and the millions of others who have no interest in Atlanta, much less the arts but would admit to this fact with just a hint of provocation or maybe a small dose of sodium pentothal) have such lively and divergent “inner voices,” is that we need a mental place to sit and rest like a park bench for the brain. Who can stand the mere thought of facing monotonous countless days of labor until retirement or winning the lottery to be happy when the alternative is handily waiting for us like a bus stop just above our hairline? What do you really suppose a cocktail waitress is thinking while she’s waiting for you to give her your order and smiling in that benign and beguiling way? Her imagination could be setting your hair on fire for all you know. I can’t speak to all the crazies whose brains run in other directions but basically I’m encouraging all of us to unleash our own artistic curiosity, listen to the sounds of the sea in our head and hope it’s not just an ear infection.

First Montessori School of Atlanta has announced it is changing its name to Springmont School (springmont.com) in 2013, the year of the school’s 50th anniversary. Organizations promote rainwater harvesting for homes, businesses The Regional Business Coalition of Metropolitan Atlanta (RBC) and the Southeast Rainwater Harvesting Systems Association (SERHSA) have kicked off a region-wide initiative to encourage homeowners and businesses in Metro Atlanta to install rainwater-harvesting systems as an effective water conservation measure. Studies by the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District indicate that over the next 20 years water demand in the metro Atlanta region could exceed one billion gallons of water per day. Metro Atlanta relies primarily on surface water from reservoirs and rivers for its water supply needs, simply because ground water is very limited in the area. Conservation measures are critical to insure adequate water resources for the future growth of the metropolitan Atlanta region. Rainwater harvesting could provide a significant option to add to future resources. Rainwater harvesting installation is already taking place in the metro area on

government and commercial buildings as well as private homes. No new laws or ordinances are needed to make rainwater harvesting possible. Standards are clearly set out in the state plumbing code and have been on the books since 2009. Adoption of rainwater harvesting practices can proceed immediately and begin producing measurable water savings within weeks Bob Drew, chairman of SERHSA, said he is happy to see the RBC recognize the important role rainwater harvesting can play in creating new water resources for the region. He added that he is looking forward to working with the RBC to tackle the important issue of Atlanta’s water supply. “The metro Atlanta region enjoys some of the most abundant annual rainfall of any major inland city in the nation,” Drew said. “By capturing and using the water that runs off of area rooftops with every rainstorm, rainwater harvesting could provide a significant contribution to meeting metro Atlanta’s future water supply needs.” A study verified by independent

researchers at Georgia Tech concluded that if just one out of every 10 existing metro Atlanta homes and businesses used rainwater harvesting, this technology could potentially reduce demand for water from city and county water systems by roughly 27 million gallons per day. That’s the annual equivalent of filling more than 8,300 Olympic swimming pools with over 6 feet of water. Reaching a 30 percent adoption rate in 10 years would help produce upwards of 100 million gallons of water per day and help address storm water runoff issues. Terry Lawler, RBC executive director, said the business community is committed to pursuing a range of water conservation measures. Working with SERHSA to provide a part of the solution, the RBC hopes to offer an immediate, effective response that will help keep the region thriving. “Like many other large metropolitan areas, metro Atlanta still has water resource challenges that need addressing if we are to continue to attract investments,” Lawler

said. “By taking pro-active steps to educate the public and show decision makers that our region is serious about having an ample supply of water for our future needs, our region will continue to grow and prosper. Over the coming months, the RBC will be partnering with public and private organizations throughout metro Atlanta to show the benefits of investing in rainwater harvesting.”

The Atlanta City Council voted last month to approve legislation mandating the use of carbon monoxide detectors in public buildings. Public Safety Committee Chair and Post 1 At-Large Councilmember, Michael Julian Bond, pushed for passage of the legislation following the carbon monoxide scare at Finch Elementary School last year. Under the new legislation, every public building under the jurisdiction of the City of Atlanta must be equipped with carbon monoxide detectors and warning equipment effective July 1. Ted’s Montana Grill helped bring back paper drinking straws to the industry to address this very issue and has been using them in place of plastic since the restaurant company’s founding in 2002. Cress, of Longmont, Colo., started the Be Straw Free campaign (bestrawfree.org) to reduce the waste that results from the estimated 500 million plastic straws used in the U.S. each day. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering the state of Georgia’s request to re-designate the Atlanta area to attainment of the 1997 8-hour ozone standard. The proposal to approve is based on air quality monitoring data for the three-year period of 2008, 2009, and 2010 that meets the standard. The area continues to attain this standard. Atlanta is the seventh-most congested metro area in the country, up one spot from last year, according to a traffic congestion report released by The Urban Mobility Report (mobility. tamu.edu/ums). Created by the Texas Transportation Institute, the report also shows that Atlanta has better-than expected, but still frustrating, reliability. The Freeway Planning Time Index, a new measurement, shows that Atlantans have a more predictable drive time than similar metropolitan areas. However, the amount of extra time needed to plan for priority events is still high, about 3.71 times the normal drive time. That means commuters would have to allow well over an hour for a 20-minute trip if they want to be sure they’ll arrive on time for an airport ﬂight or important meeting. But beyond all that, there’s still the matter of design. Don’t underestimate the importance of keeping up with the latest trends. Style can make or break celebrities and design can mean the difference between a house that brings full price or lingers on the market. Today’s buyers are looking for “classic design elements with a modern interpretation,” said Michael C. Morris, Interior Designer and Design Studio Manager at Monte Hewett Homes. “The past becomes new again by using classic design elements, like subway tiles and farmhouse sinks, and incorporating them into more modern designs,” he explained. “It’s all

Neighborhoods noted that the current trend for home exteriors is siding that shows personality by using bright and fun color combinations. The classic red brick exterior is also making a comeback, as is the use of lighter trim on brick homes. “Overall, the trend tends to be toward white, bright, clean interiors,” McCarthy continued. “And while spaces might be smaller, homebuyers are looking for more functionality. Today’s living spaces are open and bright with lots of windows. Larger, welcoming, and livable.” Buyers also want nice sized owner’s suites, but not the oversized rooms of a few years back. Big entertaining patios are popular, provided there’s a big enough

budget. Many homebuyers wait to add outdoor living space only after they get everything they want done on the inside of the home. Larger common living areas are in more demand, and so are sunrooms that expand the interior, bringing the outdoors into the actual living space, according to Irene Hall, Marketing Manager, Pulte Group. She added that another popular feature is the “drop zone,” aka the mudroom, where family members can “drop” their stuff when they walk in the door, keeping the interior cleaner and tidier. Morris pointed to the latest look in kitchen tile. “While traditional 3-inch by 6-inch subway tiles are a staple of classic interior design, a creative twist is to use a contrasting grout color that complements a color in the countertops. Another trend is subway tiles made from materials other than the classic ceramic, from things like porcelain, glass, metal, and even reclaimed antique mirror.” Baths are popular that feature clean lines and classic materials, a great backdrop for the bright shine of chrome fixtures. Square vessel sinks and tall, gooseneck fixtures give a modern, spa-like feel. “Plank-style tiles with a wood or stone color and texture are a hot trend on the market,” Morris said. “They add an organic quality to any space and evoke a feeling of warmth with their texture and neutral, monochromatic color palettes.” Oversized showers are popular, and Hall reported that customers also prefer smaller windows over the tub and/or shower, rather than big box windows. “That way they can maintain their privacy and don’t have to worry about window treatments,” she said, “as long as the window can bring in natural light–that’s the key to the design.” What it actually comes down to, though, is that the biggest design trend for 2013 is the personalized home. Most buyers are looking for a house that’s move-in ready, and new homes have an edge when it comes to getting customized touches from the start. According to Hall, Pulte Group is now taking a step back when designing their homes, building prototypes in the field, surveying the buyers, and making tweaks to the floor plan before the final plans reach the general public. She put it simply: “We’re offering customer-inspired plans versus what a builder thinks a consumer is looking for in a home.” McCarthy explained that with the increased popularity of websites like Pinterest and Houzz, design and style trends are more a part of everyone’s world. Today’s buyers, she added, like to know that what they’re selecting fits the latest trends, but is also timeless enough to last. “People are spending money again to personalize their homes. It’s a reflection of the fact that buyers are feeling good about their investment and feel comfortable putting money into making it their own,” McCarthy said. “It feels good for someone to buy a home again. And one of the great things about buying a new home is that you have the opportunity to have it the way you want it from the day you move in.”

DIY: Soda Can Flowers

By Pamela Berger sweetpeachblog.com A couple months ago, I was buying a teddy bear for my friend’s son Daniel at Blabla Kids, when I noticed these gorgeous flowers just next door at a shop called Faith Flowers. I could tell that whoever owned this store was a highly creative person and one who loved the natural world. This flower arrangement immediately caught my eye -which as it turns out, is made from a recycled soda can. Owner Laura Iarocci has been arranging flowers for decades and loves every minute of it. Lucky for us, she’s agreed to share some of her secrets. To make your own soda can flowers you’ll need to first head outside. Pick up whatever is of interest to you, especially pieces of bark, sticks, moss, funghi, lichen... You’ll also need a glue gun and scissors. Use a pair of scissors to cut a big hole in the top of your can. Next, add glue to the can and to the bark (or your favorite found objects). Then one by one, cover your can. It’s okay if there are little gaps here and there...that’s the next step. Use the smaller objects you have gathered to fill these gaps, such as funghi or moss. I really love the red pepperberries that Laura used, which you can sometimes find at Michael’s or at various garden shops. Plus, it adds a great pop of color. Once your creation is complete, use the scissors to trim the bottom so your can will sit flat. Then add water. Next, add fresh flowers from your backyard or floral shop. You can also use dried flowers (or even better, choose flowers and stems that will look great fresh as well as dried) For this can, Laura used Ranunculus, Brezellia and Strelitizia. The final two flowers will last for months and months. And voila. Such a pretty way to display flowers and also a great way to involve the kids- not only getting them to explore the outdoors, but to gather items from outside that everyone can talk and learn about...and be reminded to care about. *Check out http://faithflowers.wix.com to see all the creative classes she teaches including howto terrariums, hand tied bouquets and wedding flowers.

The Southeastern Horticultural Society will host the 2013 Southeastern Flower Show at Cobb Galleria Centre March 15-17.
