Sustainability and basketball go hand-in-hand this month at the Georgia Dome. With the 2013 NCAA Men’s Final Four descending on the Georgia World Congress Center campus, GWCCA sustainability coordinator Tim Trefzer is on his toes and planning for the masses. Two hundred recycling containers will be placed by the City of Atlanta in Downtown as part of the extensive recycling plan. Volunteers and committee members will wear “Green Team” lapel pins and t-shirts. And, working with Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, there is an initiative to bike rather than drive. Even down to the lanyards, made of recycled material, Tim is watching the details and leveraging the opportunity to build practices for the future. In a typical year, GWCCA hosts TIM TREFZER 500 events and millions of guests. And, with that there is potential for huge amounts of waste and energy consumption. Since Tim has stepped-in, he’s wracked-up a list of significant improvements, like reducing waste at the campus by 32.4 percent. Prepping the 71,250-seat Dome to be more eco-friendly for the Final Four comes down to much of the waste that fans leave behind at their seats. Workers who pick up the trash are trained to sort it all for recycling. So, with the environment and basketball on our minds, we tip our hat to Tim Trefzer for the most valuable environmental player of the game. Happy Earth Month!

Events, volunteer opportunities all month long

Is it laying outside on a blanket in the sun, taking a walk through your local park listening to the birds, or enjoying the company of friends on a cool summer’s evening on an outdoor patio? Either way, many a perfect day starts outside. Earth Day is a celebration that is recognized internationally on April 22 each year, but its roots began in the United States in 1970 with founder Gaylord Nelson. His goal was to infuse energy from the increased public consciousness about social issues into an environmental movement to raise awareness and protect our air, land and water. At a time when local groups throughout the nation were fighting against countless assaults on the environment, from oil spills

to a loss of wilderness, The Earth Day movement succeeded in the creation of United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species acts, garnering support from all sides of the political spectrum. But now, 43 years later, while they are not household names, Earth Day and environmental sustainability are certainly words we hear about more often and there have been significant environmental improvements in Georgia, and many in Atlanta. Hoochie: The Nature Conservancy, Georgia Chapter hosts this event Friday, April 19, 7 p.m. to midnight at the Tophat Soccer Fields, Atlanta. Sweep the Hooch: Chattahoochee Riverkeeper in partnership with Trout Unlimited and the National Parks Service will conduct its 3rd annual Sweep the Hooch on Saturday, April 13, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to include 21 sites and more than 450 volunteers. Last year 3.81 tons of trash was collected with 1.2 tons being recycled along 48 miles of the Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area Register early as a walker, wader or paddler before site capacities are met. Six years ago, Teresa Groshans saw a need for healthier choices at her kindergartner’s school cafeteria. Rather than just focus on her daughter’s lunch, she started a school garden. “Every Wednesday, I met each kindergarten class in the garden for period of instruction, activities, and tastings. The garden brought joy to their day and a new setting for learning,” Groshans said. With the help of others, Groshan’s vision took root and began to grow. More parents and faculty volunteered. Murphy’s restaurant hosted dine-outs to raise funds and gave chef demonstrations. Whole Foods pitched in with 5 percent days, grants, and staff who installed planter boxes. Nicolas Donck of Crystal Organics donated 1,000 seedlings each year. Atlanta Public Schools and Sodexo began re-thinking menu options, like canned fruit. As gardens sprouted up at Morningside and Springdale Park Elementary Schools (MES and SPARK) – parents, faculty, local businesses, local farmers and others – formed the Schoolyard Sprout Foundation. Today, this nonprofit primarily helps MES and SPARK students, parents and faculty experience gardening, cooking, and eating local and fresh foods – to promote healthier choices for themselves and their environment. Children of all grades plant, maintain, and harvest the garden while covering required curriculum. Murphy’s and Atkins Park’s chefs show students and parents how to prepare the collected produce. The school cafeteria offers more fresh fruits and vegetables – so long canned fruit chunks in syrup. There are fresh fruit Fridays, new composting initiatives, trips to Morningside Farmer’s Market and more underway. Groshans said the next step is to make the current programs sustainable and add more schools. For more information, visit schoolyardsprouts.org.

The annual awards honor supporters and friends of ABC and its mission. Trees Atlanta is one of the most active “green” organizations in the city, but this month finds the nonprofit a little extra busy. While Saturday tree plantings will continue throughout the month, Trees Atlanta is also busy creating a “native prairie” of grass and wildflowers along the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail, giving walking tours of the BeltLine Arboretum, hosting a plant sale and offering a space for weddings at its ecofriendly headquarters in Reynoldstown. According to Trees Atlanta communications director Bethany Clark, April marks the end of the annual tree planting cycle (more than 2,000 were planted around the city during the winter months), the spring focus turns to activities along the Eastside Trail, which runs from Piedmont Park to the Old Fourth Ward. Last month, Trees Atlanta and its volunteers began planting 109,000 native grass and wildflower plugs along the trail, which will grow into a native prairie that will become a much needed source of nesting sites, food, and protection for birds, butterflies, bees and more. Clark said the plantings will continue through May and hundreds of volunteers are needed to make this a reality. You can see a planting calendar and sign-up to volunteer at treesatlanta.org/ calendar. The prairie is part of another massive project, the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum, which will eventually encircle the entire city along the BeltLine’s 22-mile loop. “More than 600 trees were planted last fall along the Eastside Trail – magnolias, sassafras, long leaf pines, dogwoods, oaks, elms and many more,” Clark said. “That’s just the Eastside Trail. The linear arboretum will continue to grow as the BeltLine grows.” Again, hundreds of volunteers are needed to help continue with the planting

process along the arboretum. Plantings will take place on select weekdays and weekend mornings from 9 a.m. to noon through April. Check the website for dates and to sign up. Free walking tours of the arboretum lead by trained docents are set to begin April 12. The tours will take about 90 minutes and begin at the trailhead in Inman Park. On Saturday, April 6, Trees Atlanta will hold its first ever native plant sale, which will feature native, pollinator-friendly plants and perennials. The sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Trees Atlanta Kendeda Center in Reynoldstown, 225 Chester Ave. All proceeds from this plant sale will benefit the organization’s youth education programs. Outdoor activities essential for kids Everyone knows I’m passionate about the environment. One of the main reasons for that is that I spent a great deal of time in my childhood outside. Being outdoors, actually seeing how each and every part of our natural systems work, is so vital to understanding and appreciating Mother Nature. And those times outside with my family are some of the best memories I have now. There’s another, more immediate reason to get your kids outdoors, too. Increasingly, studies are showing that being outside in nature is essential to the healthy development of children, most of whom spend a majority of their days in front of different types of electronics. Child advocacy expert Richard Louv has an excellent book on the subject, “Last Child in the Woods.” He calls this deprivation from the outside naturedeficit disorder, and his book outlines the importance of connecting your kids to the natural world that surrounds them. More information on his book and the disorder can be found at richardlouv.com. We’re lucky to live in an area of the country with so many great outdoor family activities nearby. Nearby, some of my favorite places to hike and take in the view of the birds, animals and plants are the hiking trails at Kennesaw Mountain and Stone Mountain parks. The trails are winding, and the parks hold familyfriendly activities all season long. Just a few hours away are the wellequipped campgrounds and scenic waterfalls of Amicalola Falls State

Park. Families can hike a piece of the Appalachian Trail, go horseback riding and whitewater rafting, and camp for the night at a campground that’s out in nature but equipped with bathrooms, showers, and fresh water. If beaches are more your speed, Cumberland Island National Seashore is a beautiful destination off the coast of Georgia. Its undeveloped beaches are a great opportunity for the kids to see birds and wildlife in a natural setting. It’s even far enough away from city lights for a great view of the stars! Chimney Rock State Park in North Carolina is closer than you think at only three hours from the Atlanta metro area. The park has bird watching, rock climbing, and they even invite you to bring the dogs – it’s a pet-friendly park. Another nearby outdoor destination is Little River Canyon National Preserve in Fort Payne, Ala. The park has waterfalls, canyon rims, sandstone cliffs and boulders, which means there’s lots to see and do, like hiking, kayaking, and rock climbing. A fun game to play, when you visit national parks, is to see if you can fill out a checklist of all the animals and plants you see. The National Park Service keeps a record of the animals that live in each park and provides a list on each park’s website. Five years ago, Kimberly Purpoz was homeless and dealing with mounting bills from her son Justin’s medical costs from cerebral palsy. Today, Kimberly says she feels blessed to have a fully furnished home after spending three years sleeping on the floor. The extent of their hardship was realized when Fragile Kids visited their home and news of their plight trickled down to eightyear-old Morningside twins Aran and Sayan Sonnad-Joshi. The brothers had overheard their mother talking about this and they began to devise a plan on how they could help. The boys’ mother, Shashi Sonnad, works with By Design. “We asked By Design if they could help and they agreed to furnish Ms. Kimberly and Justin’s apartment,” says

Sayan. The boys also offered to work in the warehouse on Saturdays to raise money. “I believe, inherently, that kids like to give,” says Shashi. “It’s an infectious thing.” She explains that her children have always been drawn to finding ways to give back, once asking to adopt an elephant in lieu of birthday presents. Aran explains, “It makes me feel good. Helping people in need is probably my greatest achievement so far and is one of my favorite things to do.”

And, in Kimberly Purpoz’s case, the gift brought a smile to her wheelchair-bound son’s face. “He noticed the difference,” she says. “He put his hand on the sofa with the biggest smile.” Their home now has silverware, cups, plates, dining room table, chairs, sofa and more. “There’s a beautiful marble table – so lovely,” says Kimberly. “It feels like a home now. It’s doesn’t feel empty.”

April 1, 1884: Charles William Hubner, poet, scholar and journalist, was featured in The Southern World. Born Jan. 16, 1835, the Baltimore native attended Edgar Allen Poe’s burial service in 1849. During the Civil War, Hubner was a former telegraph corps chief for Confederate generals Joseph E. Johnston and John B. Hood during the Battle of Atlanta. After the opening of the Atlanta Cyclorama in 1892, he became one of the early lecturers. Surrounded by the enormous canvas, Hubner stood on the platform with viewers explaining the five sections of the painting sequentially lighted during the show. Shortly before his 1829 death and burial in Oakland Cemetery, he wrote a memoir, Leaves from the Book of My Life, housed today in the archives of the Atlanta History Center’s Kenan Research Center. April 3, 1997: A two-mile stretch of Capitol Avenue and the address of Turner Field officially became Hank Aaron Boulevard in honor of the baseball legend. On Friday, after a 45-minute pre-game ceremony, the Atlanta Braves played its first official game in the new ballpark. Aaron, the special mystery guest, appeared out of center field carrying the old home plate from the soonto-be-demolished Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. The Braves won 5-4 over the Chicago Cubs. And Chipper Jones got his first hit in Turner Field history. April 5, 1970: Sixty-five Uptowne Neighborhood Association members gathered at Henry Grady High School to launch the beautification of Charles Allen Drive from Ponce de Leon Avenue to Tenth Street. The neighborhood plan included landscaping three existing traffic islands and planting large trees along the corridor leading to Piedmont Park. Architect Henri V. Jova, founder and chairman of the 130-member, year old association – the predecessor of Midtown’s Neighborhood Association – said, “We have a great asset here in spite of reported abuses. It remains one of the glories of Atlanta.” April 7, 1965: Gov. Carl Sanders and Mayor Ivan Allen broke ground in Buckhead on the corner of Peachtree Road and West Paces Ferry Road for the construction of the new 260,000-square foot Sears Roebuck store, designed by Atlanta architectural firm of Stevens & Wilkinson, completed in 1966.The new Buckhead Sears brought the total Atlanta stores to five with seventeen catalogue outlets. In 1984, developers Charles McKenzie and T. Harvey Mathis purchased the site for its $360 million Buckhead Plaza site.

April 15, 1913: On Confederate Memorial Day, 13-year old Mary Phagan was murdered in the National Pencil Company at 39 South Forsyth Street. Her burial site is in Marietta City Cemetery. Manager Leo Frank was convicted and later lynched by a mob, which kidnapped him from the jail. Frank was posthumously pardoned for the crime.

April 17, 1918: Silent film star Charlie Chaplin captivated an audience of 8,000 at the Atlanta Auditorium. For two hours the public went wild watching the little guy with baggy trousers, old swallowtail coat, cocky derby hat, mustache and ridiculous shoes. Chaplain sold more than $800,000 in Liberty Bonds in support of World War I. April 23, 2006: South-View Cemetery celebrated the 120th anniversary of its charter. The highlight of the event was the formation of the new historic South-View Preservation Foundation. Of the more than 70,000 African American buried at SouthView is the notable Graham Washington Jackson, Sr., the favorite musician of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The Escape Plan Ten or 15 years ago, Delta Airlines had this magical program called “The Escape Plan” (if you like pina coladas, or getting caught in the rain…). Each week they’d have a slate of super-cheap travel destinations for a weekend trip. For the untethered, it was perfect. I’d wear this retro, leather “travelin’ man” jacket and strut through the airport, all young and childless. I jaunted to New York or Boston or Washington D.C. on a whim and was big on surprising people like, “Hey, guess what? I’m here, dude! Let’s go out!” Okay, I probably never actually talked like that, but the wanderlust was real. Those inclinations have been packed away with that jacket though because now I am definitively tethered. I am the tetherball. I am the Zim Zam. Here is an approximation of scheduling dialogue between Kristen and me. It’s not entirely accurate, but then again, I’m very tired.

The party isn’t at Leaping Lizards. What? They’re always at Leaping Lizards! No, this one is at the Tae Kwan Doe place – I taold you that. What? Where is that? It’s like a quarter mile from our house. Oh. Who are the parents of this kid? I don’t know. Look for the dad with multiple cameras strapped around his neck. Everyone else will look completely bored and defeated, except the mom. She’ll be totally stressed out. Party on, dude.

Jumpstart seeks retirees to join Community Corps Program By Ally Wright A new initiative from Jumpstart seeks to tap into a growing sect of potential volunteers: retirees. Jumpstart Atlanta Community Corps program is calling all adults who want to volunteer their time and make a difference in their community. The Jumpstart organization is designed to better prepare preschoolers from low-income neighborhoods to compete and succeed in school, from day one of kindergarten to college and beyond. Corps members receive training on how to improve children’s language and literacy skills, building their confidence as they embark on their journey through school. The majority of Jumpstart Corps members have always been college students, but in the past few years the nationwide organization has realized the untapped population of older generations, those with more flexible schedules and unused energy. The Community Corps has had success in Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. This past fall it was launched in Atlanta. Jumpstart works to strengthen communities not only by helping children; the experience is invaluable for its volunteers as well.

The Community Corps invites adults of all ages to become a part of a team of people dedicated to improving their own communities. The commitment is 200 to 300 hours over the course of one school year, about eight to 12 hours a week, with one to five of those involving working in a preschool classroom, assisting the teacher. According to Jumpstart’s website, over 55 percent of members return for multiple years. Last year, over 62 percent of Community Corps members were over the age of 65, but anyone is welcome. Atlanta is a town that loves a race – we have hundreds of them each year, from the local school 5K to the big-budget half marathon. Atlanta’s hills and beautiful scenery make it a fun place to run, even if you’re just getting started. Since a couple of recent runs were held in the cold – the Intown 10K an Chatta-

hoochee Road Runners 5K and 10K were run on mornings when flurries fluttered down – using cross training can help get your body for runs in the spring and beyond. Cross training your body gives it the strength it needs to rebound quickly between runs, whether you’re just starting out in your running career or preparing for your tenth marathon. Here are some great options for your between-run workouts: Take a class. The core-centered classes, such as Bar Method, FlyBarre, Pilates and Zumba, are great ways to build strength and get you moving in new directions. And I swear by anything involving plyometrics, also known as jump training. It teaches you how to land safely.

Yoga will work all the muscle groups you need to stay fast and strong, while helping you realign anything that’s gotten out of whack from years of running or even just sitting at a desk or in front of the TV. Helping Animals LifeLine takes over enforcement of Fulton animal shelter

By Collin Kelley, Editor LifeLine Animal Project officially took over the service contract for Fulton County animal services last month. The decade-old non-profit is well known in the community for its no-kill shelter and clinic in Avondale Estates. LifeLine will provide enforcement and take over running of the county animal shelter for at least five years. The organization’s goal is to make Fulton’s shelter a no-kill as well. “LifeLine will create an animal services program dedicated to saving lives,” said Rebecca Guinn, executive director and CEO of LifeLine. “With community support and volunteers, we will focus on

local, collaborative, high-volume, and high-impact solutions, while still providing hope for life and love for every animal entering our care.” With Fulton County’s euthanasia rate one of the highest in the nation, LifeLine wants to follow the example set by other large cities like Los Angeles and Austin that have moved to the low or no-kill model. Language of Art I am an artist and I’ve been thinking…

In Spanish! Es primavera y dondequiera que miremos vemos signos de esperanza y alegría (Translation: It’s springtime and everywhere we look we see signs of hope and joy!). I’m not really sure why I have started thinking in Spanish but it might have something to do with Benito, who is painting my house and insists that as a responsible adult it is my obligation to comprehend and communicate in at least one secondary language and preferably that should be Spanish because he says it’s the most important language on earth. Naturally, he didn’t say that exactly but I could tell by the look on his face that he was very impressed by my meager attempts to communicate in his beloved language and would continue to pretend he understands nothing unless I try to speak more and better Spanish. I explained that my primary language is Art, with secondary skills in the dialect of the South and that those two languages are universal so I win. He says, “casas de pintura, arte de la pintura; ¿Cuál es la diferencia” (loosely translated to: “painting houses, painting art; what’s the difference?” and resumes humming and rolling. With spring, it’s not just the flowers in bloom or telltale pollen count that I notice. It’s the emergence of artists who have been busy creating new works of art during the cold months of winter, eager to find a willing buyer or at the very least someone who will appreciate their unique skills. Recently, I met a striking, tall woman with an easy smile named Elisa Cashin who raises horses and collects driftwood. She insists that there is no contradiction to this because she loves both riding and beachcombing equally. The results of her internal collaboration produced profoundly poetic sculptures of full scale horse busts with the collected wooden pieces assembled in a way to indicate movement and a personal perspective as if the piece has ridden in on a wind or wandered in from the seashore. Being a very new artist with immensely strong instincts I was pleased that she immediately achieved success in her first outing to show her works. I know I’ll see more of her. Another woman fell into my line of vision recently that may have been incubating her artistic point of view for years and just recently found a place to create. Her name is Azi. She is from Iran and between working with refugees, poets and non-profit groups has managed to pour her substantial energies into a vibrant series of mixed media works that include stunning fantastical pen and ink work with splashes of color that tells a story of longing, hope and joy. like it and believe me, I’ve seen mixed media artists at work for many years. I know that she will continue to evolve, flourish and bloom into a successful artist and achieve the recognition she deserves. These new artists will soon compete for space and attention among the hundreds of other new and established artists in metro Atlanta. They’ll look for a home base, a following, a mentor, a gallery, an art festival and hope that they made the right choice when listening to the dictatorial voice in their head demanding, “make this!” whether it’s in Spanish, Persian, Southern or Equestrian. While I wish that our art scene in Atlanta was a bit more cohesive and centralized I know that there is room for these two women and many more because collectively we all breathe art with its heady aroma as sweet as the fragrance of spring.

The Wren’s Nest Centennial

Center for Puppetry Arts helps celebrate anniversary To mark the 100th anniversary of The Wren’s Nest, the West End home of author Joel Chandler Harris, the Center for Puppetry Arts will stage an adaptation of his famed characters, Brer Rabbit & Friends. The show, adapted by Jon Ludwig and directed by Spencer Stevens, will run April 11 to May 26. The Center for Puppetry Arts will also be giving coupons for a free visit to The Wren’s Nest to attendees. Based on a collection of Southern African American tales documented by Joel Chandler Harris, Brer Rabbit & Friends is the story of a group of country cousins whose innocent early morning gathering results in a battle of brains versus brawn. When I expressed interest in coffee, my good friend Em, of Emily G’s told me I had to talk to Jason Dominy, the Coffee Wizard, to learn how to brew the perfect cup. Turns out Jason is the Director of Outreach and Wholesale Support for the reputable Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters, based in Atlanta and Olympia, Washington. The special aspect to Batdorf & Bronson is that all their coffee is certified fair trade, certified organic or bought directly from the farm. Jason, “We roast with 100% renewable energy and recycle 80-90% of everything that comes in. They’ve become so successful in their methodology, here in Atlanta they roast coffee beans for the entire East coast- from Chicago to the Virgin Islands. Jason favors the Clever Dripper process to make his perfect cup. Jason, “It’s a

hybrid of a French press and a pour over and allows for a rich, full body with a clean, sweet taste.” He recommends a burr grinder for an even extraction and highly recommends buying whole beans to ground just before making your coffee. This will ensure the freshest cup of coffee with the deepest aroma and flavor. So here’s how to make the perfect cup. First, rinse the coffee filter, then add freshly ground beans. Start a timer at zero and saturate grounds with 200 degree water. The formula is 24 grams of coffee to 340 grams of water, just off boil. (This will make 2 coffee cups worth, or 12 oz.) Jason likes to do a quick whisk on the very top to push the grounds into the water. When the timer reaches 2:30, set the dripper on a large coffee mug or decanter to fill. Then serve and appreciate. Tax credits are good for up to five years and $17,500 as long as the business continues to hire at least two new people per year. Local Apps Performing arts, local shopping on your smartphone By Collin Kelley, Editor Apps for your smartphone and tablet are now in use for everything from banking to photography, and now there are two local ones worth exploring if you’re a fan of shopping and the performing arts. Dave Stevens of Stevens Interactive Productions has invented an augmented reality app, Theatre Plus Network (facebook.com\ theatreplus), that makes images in print materials come to life. Once you download the app, you aim your smartphone’s camera at a graphic, program or poster and it instantly comes to life with music, video and other animated information. The Atlanta Opera, Alliance Theatre, Fox Theatre and Atlanta Symphony are already using the app and more arts groups are regularly coming online. The app is available for both iPhone and Android apps and Stevens is planning to extend the app’s reach in the future to newspapers and magazines. The other new noteworthy app is called The Nearby (thenearby. com), an iPhone app designed to help shoppers find locally owned shops and boutiques. The app was launched last year in Charlotte NC by Laura Vinroot Poole, who was frustrated that her own small businesses were losing shoppers to big box and online stores. Since launching in Atlanta in January, The Nearby has more than 5,000 followers and is adding shops and boutiques regularly. The app lets shoppers create a list of participating stores they want to follow, which are then listed in order of proximity to their current location. Participating shops regularly post information about new merchandise, special events, sales and customers can comment or chat with the shop.

SXSW 2013: Hardware Got Hyped The buzz pours out of the SXSW Interactive conference every March, and this year’s big winner of hipster/geek mindshare hails from the hardware category. Although the conference is less of a launch pad for new start-ups than it was previously, it’s definitely the cultural epicenter of the digital ecosystem. Innovative behemoth Google took top spot in dominating the conversation by capitalizing on the opportunity to reveal more about Google Glass, those mysteriously nerdy cool eyeglass frames they’ve been taunting us with for a year or so. Glass is an augmented reality wearable computer in development at Google labs. The breaking news is its integration with products from several already-favorite apps, including Path, Evernote, Gmail and The New York Times. Which means this hardware of the future is one step closer to augmenting our realities, one Warby Parker or Ray-Ban frame at a time. The apps feature simple, customized designs that fit on the tiny screen. Super exciting stuff. Maybe I can get one to match my Nike Fuel Band? Hardware’s made a comeback and wearable computing seems to have made its mark on fashion. Google’s innovation has been hogging the spotlight flip side, but hype from other interactive categories is slowing down. Once surefooted on the digital landscape, location-based apps and social media have stumbled in the recent year. App fatigue is high and social media burnout is rampant. Celebs and even us regular users have taken vacations or quit platforms entirely. Companies and users interested in digital innovation are changing focus to the longview. Whether the daily grind of social media or the noise of never-ending new apps makes it harder to keep up or to stand out, hopefully our collective fatigue will end when a big change takes the focus away from the short-term gratification (or dissatisfaction). Design Trends Renovators talk amenities, finishes as homeowners upgrade By Shandra Hill Smith With the housing market still making its rebound, more homeowners are staying put, choosing to renovate over relocate. For those would-be buyers, putting their money into their own homes can make for a respite today and recouping tomorrow. So what are some of today’s amenities and finishes that can add up to a plus for your home both now and later? A few professionals with their pulse on design trends for 2013 weigh in on what’s hot today. Green is in. That’s true of the color and when it comes to environmentally friendly touches as well. “We are seeing a trend toward all shades of green from the very palest of gray-green to the most Irish of kelly green!” says Dawn Landau, designer/partner, Environs Residential (environsresidential.com). Splashes of green and turquoise are popping up, says Heather Shuster, project development director, Renewal Design Build (renewaldesignbuild.com). Additionally, “gray continues to dominate wall colors, large furniture goods and even cabinetry. Yellow seems to be receding as a hot color, while coral is taking its place for those looking for warm accents throughout the home.” “Many of the colors that seem to be very popular are grays and greens for paint as well as blacks and whites for paint, stone and tile,” adds Tony McSwain, president of Integral Structure, Inc. (integralstructure. com). “I see brown earth tones less frequently in products like natural stone tiles and granite, and more of the white and gray of marble in both countertops and tiles.” When it comes to finishes, “two sides of the spectrum are in hot demand,” Shuster points out. “On one side, we see lots of rustic, worn-in details like exposed beams, raw wood treatments and galvanized metal. At the same time, we are seeing lots of shiny chrome in bathrooms, polished white tile and clean crisp lines. Both trends are strong at the moment and continue to be featured in many homes.” Personalization and customization also are factors today. “Before the credit and real estate bubble burst, most of my customers made decisions with one eye on their personal tastes and

one eye on the market: How would the decisions they make impact their ability to appeal to the housing market if they decided to sell,” says McSwain. “Today, that concern about the market almost never comes up. Customers are making decisions based on their tastes and what makes them happy. Though the house is still an ‘asset,’ it is also a home for people and families and I see the home and the personalization of it as a welcome trend.” Along with customization, there’s also the convenience aspect for homeowners who want to “entertain and relax at home with friends and family,” Shuster adds. “Outdoor kitchens with sinks, prep areas and room for multiple grills and a few standard burners are on many homeowners’ wish lists. Basements with plenty of space to enjoy movies while also providing clever storage are also a popular request.” One finish that remains popular today is granite, “with the emphasis being on organic patterns and lots of movement in the stone,” Landau says. “Consistent patterns and solid colors are out. More buyers are opting for alternate stones as well, such as marble, limestone and travertine, particularly in bathrooms.” As for the going-green approach, energy efficiency and doing what’s right for the environment appear to be top of mind. “Everybody’s trying to be as energy efficient as possible because everybody’s trying to bring down their monthly costs,” says David Fowler, president of David G. Fowler Architecture (dcfarch.com), which has offices in Bozeman, Mont., and Atlanta. “Everybody wants a more efficient house – from function and from cost to operate.” Fowler also is finding that homeowners are turning to the Nest Learning Thermostat, which programs itself and learns your schedule and habits and “over time what you want it to be at what time of day and what time of year,” according to Fowler. ORGANIC VEGETABLE GARDENING Improve your landscape by growing edibles By Holly Brooks, King Landscaping Some people consider gardening part of their exercise routine. Others like the fresh taste, the wide variety of edibles that can be grown, and the potential cost-savings for groceries. With proper planning, you can incorporate an organic garden into your conventional landscape design. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not necessary to have a row garden. Organic gardening is the practice of letting nature manage itself first, then intervening only if needed by mechanical methods or, if you must, non-synthetic products. The Atlanta area has a very wide plant pallet that encompasses many edibles. To ensure continuing variety in your landscape, incorporate annual edibles like tomatoes, basil or eggplant. Also think about perennial edibles as part of your landscape structure. Blueberries arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t compact or neat foundation plants but they can work really well on a wood line or a fence. Other perennials such as asparagus, raspberries, black berries, and figs will reward you over multiple years from a single planting. Plants will not thrive unless their roots are in healthy soil. A soil test is a good way to learn about the condition of your soil. Also look at more obvious signs. Can you put a shovel in the ground, remove it and find a worm in every shovel? Worms and other decomposers that live in the ground continually chew through dead plant material creating compost which in turn feeds and provides air to the roots of

your plants. Feed the soil, and the soil will feed the plants. Most insects do healthy things for your garden. Insects fall into one of three categories: pollinators, predators, and decomposers. All three are necessary for an organic garden. Butterflies, moths and bees are examples of pollinators. Predatory insects such as parasitic wasps, ladybugs and some beetles hunt for bad insects. Worms, pillbugs, earwigs and the like are decomposers. Everything has a job to do. When we intervene and spray insecticides, we do more harm than good.
