Making Curry Ketchup, p. 45

I’d like to take this opportunity to brag about my friends who create beautiful things with their hands. Sandy Tyler and Brigette Flood (see Brigette’s Making Sense of Social column on page 22) are part of the Knitterati. This is a local team knitting for countless hours for such events as Art on the BeltLine. For their most recent project, The Nature Bike, which was on display this Spring in East Atlanta, they covered 10 bikes with their handy work. It’s pretty special to see vision come to life and also makes for interesting dinner party conversation: “What have you been up to?” “Oh, just working on turning handle bars of a bike into a dragon fly.” Over a drink at Manuel’s this winter, I asked another friend, Christy Petterson – the gusto behind The Indie Craft Experience – to write an article about crafting in Atlanta. She’s passionate about the topic. And, being in touch with countless local crafters for her events, she’s an excellent source on the topic. Our Made in Atlanta article, page 20, highlights local crafters keeping age-old talents alive and well in our city. So, cheers to soul fulfilling, life enriching, conversation-starting world of crafts and the people who create them!

TAKING IT TO THE STREETS

Atlanta Streets Alive TO TAKE OVER 2.7 MILES OF PEACHTREE By Collin Kelley Editor Three years after a portion of Edgewood Avenue was shut down for the inaugural Atlanta Streets Alive, sponsor Atlanta Bicycle Coalition (ABC) has its sights set on the city’s signature street – Peachtree. Atlanta Streets Alive will see 2.7 miles of Peachtree Street from Midtown to Downtown closed to vehicular traffic on Sunday, May 19, from 2 to 6 p.m. Four those four hours, Peachtree will be turned into a giant mall with activities, performances, demonstrations and the chance for Intowner’s to ride their bikes, skateboard, walk, jog – anything that doesn’t involve motorized vehicle. ABC director Rebecca Serna said Peachtree had always been the goal. “You want the signature street to make a great statement,” she said. “It was our goal from the beginning.” From just a mile being closed on Edgewood in 2010 to last year’s Streets Alive that saw Highland Avenue closed from Old Fourth Ward to Virginia Highland, the event continues to grow in popularity. For Peachtree, Coca-Cola, MailChimp and the City of Atlanta are onboard as sponsors and supporters.

Last year, Atlanta Streets Alive was, literally, at my front door in the Old Fourth Ward. I was able to walk out of my building and marvel at people doing yoga in the middle of Highland Avenue, not to mention the skateboarders, cyclists, walkers and informational booths. This year, Atlanta Streets Alive is taking over the city’s “main street” – Peachtree for an entire afternoon on May 19. Yes, it will cause headaches for drivers, but, to be blunt, I don’t care. The Downtown Connector is a traffic nightmare and its off-ramp back-ups suck at my will to live. The idea of showing Atlantans what a true main street could be like as a giant pedestrian mall is a great idea. Maybe it will inspire someone to offer up a solution to Intown’s transportation issues. You can read about Atlanta Streets Alive starting on Page 4. Speaking of transportation, last month I went on a bit of an adventure: I took a Greyhound Express bus from Atlanta to New York City for a literary event. Eighteen

Serna described the mix of activities for the spring event as “zany and fun,” including bike polo, street hockey, yoga, a climbing wall, fun stuff for kids and more. Students at Georgia Tech are finishing up a smartphone app to help visitors find happenings along the route. Organizations and individuals who would like to host an activity along the route can apply up to May 12 at atlantastreetsalive.com. Also happening during the street closure will be the Great Atlanta Bicycle Parade, which lines up at 1:30 p.m. at Ellis Street for a downhill ride to the High Museum. The event is open to everyone, and riders are encouraged to dress in costumes and decorate their bikes. You can find out more about the parade at greatatlantabicycleparade.com. Of course, closing down one of the city’s busiest streets isn’t without some logistical hurdles. The most important aspect was reaching out to businesses, hotels, churches and residents who live along Peachtree. “30,000 people will be able to walk out of their doors and join the fun,” Serna said. “Businesses are excited about all the foot traffic coming by their storefronts. There’s a great opportunity for local businesses to see repeat customers once the event is over, too.” hours on bus afforded me the opportunity to reflect on a number of issues, including my own personal endurance. Twenty years ago, riding a bus for 18 hours (20 if you include the hours spent inching through the Lincoln Tunnel) would have been no big deal. At 43, I can safely say those days are past. I broke the journey up by staying overnight in Richmond, VA, which I am certain saved my sanity. The real take away for me about the trip is how necessary Greyhound really is to this country. From the homeless, to senior citizens, to students, Greyhound is still an inexpensive way to travel. I met a fascinating slice of citizens who regularly use Greyhound to visit family and friends because they can’t afford any other way to travel. A businessman I met does the ATL/ NYC run twice a month on Greyhound because he doesn’t like to fly. Sir, I salute your gluteal fortitude! collin@atlantaintownpaper.com Correction: In last month’s article on renovations, we misspelled a source’s name. It should have been David C. Fowler. KeepitINtown.com

Serna was inspired to do Atlanta Streets Alive after living in Bogota, Columbia where the concept originated back in 1976 and has grown ever since. “I happened to be living there and when they did the event, and I have fond memories of taking a salsa class in the street,” she recalled. ABC, which advocates for bike lanes and safety in the city, believes Streets Alive gives residents, businesses and community leaders a chance to see what Atlanta would be like with cars taken temporarily out of the equation. It’s also a chance for people to ride their bikes in a truly safe zone. “We love hearing from people who brought their families to the other events and now their kids want to ride their bikes everyday,” she said. “It gives residents the opportunity to see where they live differently. Walking, biking or skateboarding down Peachtree is much a different experience than driving.” ABC is planning a second Atlanta Streets Alive on Peachtree in September and a third in Virginia Highland in October. Serna said ABC is also looking at other neighborhoods to take the event, including West End and the Lakewood area.

NEW SANCTUARY ChristChurch Presbyterian plans modern Peachtree building Atlanta’s ChristChurch Presbyterian will soon break ground on a dramatic new sanctuary at 1760 Peachtree Street in Midtown. Unlike a traditional Southern or Gothic worship facility, the new church will feature a modern design that will incorporate much of the site’s existing building and complement its urban setting. Gertler &Wente Architects, a New York City-based architecture firm, is serving as lead designer and Architect of Record, and Atlanta-based Tunnell-Spangler-Walsh & Associates (TSW) is the local architect. Senior pastor Rev. Dr. Paul Gardner said, “We are outgrowing our current facility and cannot adequately expand our congregation and reach our city without additional space where we can worship and meet together, invite people to join us and provide gathering spaces for youth, classes, meals, counseling and ministry work.” Four years ago, the congregation purchased a three-story office building at the corner of Peachtree and 25th Streets, just a few blocks from their current location, and began the process of clarifying what they wanted to do with the site. Church members agreed they wanted to incorporate as much of the existing building as possible

into a new facility, rather than destroy it. “We researched and interviewed a number of architecture firms,” said Carter Reames, chairman of ChristChurch’s building committee. “We were familiar with Gertler & Wente through their innovative repurposing of a 1913 Manhattan parking garage into a spectacular new church for Redeemer Presbyterian Church. We believed they could bring fresh and exciting ideas to Atlanta to transform our vision for a new sanctuary into a beautiful design. TSW recently won a national award for the design of a new contemporary worship facility for Woodstock Community Church, and having them on the design team brings the local expertise that’s so important in a project like this.” The two architecture firms collaborated on a design that expands the existing building on its south side and elevates the roof and windows above a 925-seat sanctuary. Seating inside the sanctuary will be accomplished through stackable chairs, rather than permanent pews, making the room flexible for other uses apart from worship services. The Peachtree Street side of the building will feature a subtle tower with three crosses facing north, south and

east. A courtyard will help transition visitors from the busy city streetscape to the more contemplative areas of the building. Jerry Spangler with TSW said the new church will also feature a coffee shop facing Peachtree and an art gallery on the building’s south side. “The exterior will be clad in a large-scale porcelain panel along with the brick, glass and steel. Passers-by

will know it’s a church, but they might have to take a second look to be sure,” he said. Work on the new church is set to begin in June with a construction time of 18 months. For more about the church, visit christchurchatlanta.org.

LIVING THE DREAM New Atlanta Dream CEO is ready for exciting hoop season

By Clare S. Richie Sports are a significant part of our culture. Our children play sports at an earlier age, adults try to stay fit longer, business is conducted courtside, and we root for the home team. Yet the WNBA Atlanta Dream is still trying to gain our attention. Ashley Preisinger, a business and community leader just named Atlanta Dream CEO last October, is eager to change that. This summer, she wants you to come to Phillips Arena to cheer on the best female professional basketball talent in the world and join the loyal Dream fans already in the know. As CEO, Preisinger oversees all aspects of the team such as sales, finance and basketball operations. New to the sports world, Preisinger is extremely upbeat about her transition. “There are similar elements – working on promotions, staying on top of finances, reporting to owners – but when you overlay that with a sports team, it’s a lot more fun,” she said. Preisinger has big plans for the Dream’s sixth season, which kicks of May 25 in a home opener against the Tulsa Shock. “A challenge for my ‘rookie season’ is to increase awareness and maintain a high quality game experience.” Fan loyalty to the Dream is “off the charts” and those who attend their first game want to come back. So, if the Dream can entice more folks to experience a game – they’ll be hooked. She’s seen this before. As co-chair of the Georgia Shakespeare Foundation Board of Trustees, Preisinger faced similar challenges of how to promote a strong product that was well regarded by those who sampled it, but in need of more outreach. Under her guidance, last spring’s Shakespeare in the Park offered limited reserved seating and this May 1-5 showing of Much Ado About Nothing has some advanced purchase tickets. The timing is perfect for increasing awareness for the Dream. This young WNBA team has a lot to be proud of and yet something still to prove. In just five seasons, the Dream has qualified for the playoffs four times, winning the Eastern Conference twice. But falling short in the finals twice has left them hungry to bring home the WNBA championship. In addition, the upcoming 17th WNBA season, of the longest-running women’s professional sports league, should be as exciting as its first. That’s because the “3 to See”, college superstars Brittney Griner, Elena Delle Donne and Skylar Diggins, are joining the WNBA. These much-hyped rookies are sure to create a buzz when each comes to play Atlanta Dream’s Angel McCoughtry. Another priority for Preisinger and her players is “giving back to the community.” She plans to build upon the Dream’s commitment to inspire youth off the court. Several times a week, Dream players are in the community despite full practice and game schedule. You may see team members at your neighborhood school, afterschool program, or recreation center, promoting “Being Fit,” increased literacy or working hard to achieve results. Preisinger understands the positive impact of her player’s as real and accessible role models. Her daughters, Katie,13, and Brooke,11, are already in awe. In fact, when Katie made her school’s basketball team after three days of try outs, she asked her mother to let Dream player Mintie Price know. Ask Preisinger if her successful career, community involvement, and varied interests make her a role model for young women and she is quick to tell you how lucky she is and to share the credit with her family. “My parents’ support helped me believe ‘I can do anything’ and my husband and daughters have encouraged me to ‘go for it’ at every turn.” She has the support, experience and drive to grow this franchise. A Look Back Ann Taylor Boutwell May 5, 1993: Atlanta native Gladys Knight – singer, songwriter and actress – emceed the Kids’ Celebration, a free concert at the Omni sponsored by the Atlanta Project Immunization Children’s Health Initiative. The special guest for the evening dressed in black, donning a wide-brim hat and shades was Michael Jackson. After his introductory walk on stage, he took a front seat and remained in the audience for two 75-minute shows. Knight called to the stage former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, Gov. Zell Miller and Mayor Maynard H. Jackson, noted hip-hop trio TLC and a host of other performers. Kids’ Celebration was an effort for the immunization of 17,000 Atlanta children in five days. May 10, 1902: The Southern Architect and Building News recognized Atlanta’s Henrietta “Harry” Cuttino Dozier (1872-1947) as one of the few women practicing architecture in the United States. Atlanta’s first female architect, a Florida native, arrived in the city in 1874, when she was 18 months old, accompanied by a widowed mother, brother and sister. While attending Crew Street Elementary School, Henrietta used her preferred lifetime name “Harry.” After graduating from Girls’ High in 1891, she enrolled in New York’s Pratt Institute for a twoyear beaux-arts curriculum. In 1899, she graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. The Southern Architect and Building News also noted that she not only created plans, but supervised the construction. Dozier once said that most of her designs were for the Episcopal Church, architectural plans authorized by Bishop Cleland Kinlock Nelson. In 1905, she

She considered her best work in Atlanta the Southern Ruralist Building, located at Hunter and Washington streets. May 13, 1905: Atlanta Terminal Station opened on the northwest corner of Mitchell and Madison Avenue (now Spring Street). It accommodated the trains of six large railroads. Architect Philip Thornton Marye, a North Carolina native designed the complex’s concrete façade with Renaissance Revival arcades. The Terminal closed in June 1970 and was demolished in 1972. The Richard B. Russell Federal Building opened on the site in 1980. May 17, 1939: Friends and family gathered at Ponce de Leon Avenue’s Druid Hills Baptist Church to celebrate the life of Walter Gerald Cooper. The Georgian native born in 1860 was a journalist, historian, civic and religious leader. As promotional chief for Atlanta’s 1895 Cotton States exhibition, Cooper’s worldwide-publicity generated tourism and stimulated future Spanish American enterprise in Atlanta. From 1902 to 1919, he was the secretary of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. The publication of his 918-page Official History of Fulton County was celebrated at Rhodes Memorial Hall, then the State of Georgia Archives, today’s Georgia Trust for Historic preservation. His burial site is Westview Cemetery.

Eligible contestants wore chintzy costumes to qualify for one of the three sessions that Saturday evening in Ponce’s St. Nicholas Rink Auditorium. Fifty dollars was divided among the prize-winners for the tackiest costume. The first place winners for tackiest man and tackiest woman each received $15. Keeping Up With The Kupersmiths

Our driveway is partially shared with our new neighbors the Kupersmiths. Janine and Kupe have three kids – Jordan (girl, 12), Evan (10) and Rachel (6). They’re good people. I mean, they are really good people and occasionally I fret over keeping up. Soon after moving in I spotted all of them singing show tunes together while cleaning out the garage. I can’t get my kids to transport their dirty clothes into the hamper from the spot on the floor directly next to the hamper. Margo was actually drawing on the new cabinetry at the very moment a commendable rendition of “It’s a hard knock life” floated through our window. The Kupes invited us over for dinner and apparently Janine bakes her own bread on Fridays. They say a prayer and each family member breaks off a piece of the bread. A Jewish toast if you will, which

KeepitINtown.com

for an Irish slug like me, is just impossibly wholesome. Of course, promptly after this genteel, family moment I had to explain that the reason I was a little late for dinner was because I had inadvertently stolen a minivan. Explanation: I thought it was a five year lease, turns out it was only three and I drove that rig around for three months before realizing this. I went in to the dealer ready to be cuffed and was sent home in a shiny new 2013 model (some penalties and fees applied). So, yeah, while the Kupes take family bike rides and urban hikes and actual classes to learn more about the history of Decatur, the minivan I park in our partially shared driveway is stolen, okay? They probably prayed for us to get our act together after we left. I take some solace in the fact that the median age of their kids is 9 while ours average out shy of 5 but we’re definitely taking notes. At Rachel’s birthday party, Janine orchestrated a camp theme in the backyard, replete with tents, songs and highly organized games. It’s making me rethink the “Piñata-and-a-Pony-Keg” theme I had planned for Elliott’s birthday...hmmm. Professionally, Kupe traffics in Business Analysis. He lectures and teaches and mentors and motivates and replies to emails at 4am. He just co-authored a Business Analysis…for dummies book for that popular series. Since I am a small business owner I can’t help but think he wrote it with me in mind. Next, he can write a book for the Paynes, his neighbors on the other side: Business Analysis…for PhD’s. I’m hoping this village is on board with helping to raise a couple of Sullivan children because it can only help. And here’s the kicker: The Kupersmiths organize a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser for childhood cancer each year and Evan has voluntarily had his head shaved for it every year since he was six. This hair, by the way, is outstanding. It is red and curly and ginormous and he grows it out all year in anticipation for this event. Then he raises money and shaves it in solidarity with children undergoing cancer treatments. Oh, and the kids are musically gifted too. I know, I know, crimony! Route 41 kept the fundraiser grooving featuring Evan on drums and Jordan on bass and the equally talented and youthful Gavin and Ethan Mcdonnell on guitar and keyboard (check Youtube for their cover of Cee Lo’s “Forget You”). Suffice it to say that anytime I hear the basketball bouncing in the driveway, or the hula-hoop hooping, I’m sending my kids out to join theirs and soak up some of their good nature and manners. There is a new family moving in across the street in a couple of weeks. I’m sort of hoping for a pack of underachievers.

This St. Bernard/ Collie Rough Mix is full-grown at 60 pounds, thus qualifying him as more of a “mini-giant.” While he may not have the heft of his full-bred companions, Ivan makes up for it by having more than his share of heart. He is an incredibly affectionate companion who loves people big and small. For a treat or two, he will follow basic commands of “sit” and “shake”, and he walks very well on leash. Ivan is social with other dogs, but he overwhelmingly prefers the company of female companions. To adopt Ivan, visit urbanpetproject.org.

Crafters turn art into entrepreneurial businesses By Christy Petterson

In 2005, I organized a craft market with a friend. We didn’t have any long-range plans for ever doing it again. It was sort of an experiment that we hoped would be fun and successful. I remember saying out loud the morning of the event, “Wouldn’t it be cool if 100 people showed up?” Fast forward several hours, and we had welcomed 800 people through the door. The director of Eyedrum, where we hosted the event, said he could only think of one other event at their space that had produced such a great turn out. We, my friend Shannon Mulkey and I, are now in our ninth year of organizing the Indie Craft Experience (ICE) and our attendance expectations have jumped to wondering how many thousands will show up at each event. We host a craft market with about 100 vendors in early June and a holiday version the weekend before Thanksgiving every

20 INtown | May 2013

year. We were busting at the seams of our venue, Ambient Plus Studio near the West End, this past holiday show with about 115 vendors. In 2010, we produced our first annual pop-up shop during the holiday season, a temporary boutique of handcrafted items created by artists from all over the country. The past two years we’ve been lucky to call Criminal Records in Little Five Points our home for the pop-up shop. In 2011, we introduced Wedding Day Hooray, our event for planning a handcrafted wedding, and in 2012, we introduced Salvage, our vintage market. These shows have both been a challenge and a great satisfaction as we’ve broadened our audience and reach. This year we launched our online store, The Curatorial. For this first year, we are hosting four online pop-up shops open only three weeks each. Next year, the shop will be open all the time. In our ninth year we are producing five events, a brick and mortar pop-up shop and four online pop-up shops with a two-person staff and full-time jobs. It’s a lot of work but I’ve never done anything more rewarding. The reward comes in two forms: the people I’ve gotten to know and the creations that they make. I recently had the opportunity to talk with five of my favorite local crafters: Tara Christensen of Hot Pink Poo, Mary Harding of Mary Rebecca, Laura Cherry of Laure Designs, Amanda Miller of Flex Family Arts and Leela Hoehn of Native Bear. I loved their insight on Atlanta’s craft community, the economy, why you should buy handcrafted and how they got started down this creative path. Going way back to how these talented ladies got started most of them say something like “I’ve always been a crafter” or “I’ve always loved creating things with my hands” or “I’ve always found myself making things.” Crafting has been a lifelong enjoyment. For many of them, this love affair began by observing their parents. While the actual skills were not necessarily passed down to them, they are carrying on the tradition of an artistic lifestyle that they learned from their parents. “My father is the most talented artist I know,” said Christensen. “He specializes in Renaissance oil paintings. As I child I use to sit for hours a day while he painted me. That’s a lot to ask of a little girl, but I enjoyed the end result so much.” The child of a professional photographer (father) and avid crafter (mother), Harding said, “Doing art and DIY projects was just a staple in our household. My mother still has a group of friends she gets together with on a bimonthly basis to do craft projects with.” All five of these crafters sell their creations on a regular basis at craft markets, like ICE, and online through sites like Etsy.com. Selling is a huge part of the job description of a crafter and can take up just as much time and energy as the making part. These entrepreneurial tendencies can

start at a young age. “I always had the dual desire to create, and then also to sell my creations,” said Hoehn. “When I was in first grade, I would create picture books to sell for a quarter, or practice drawing portraits of my friends.” Mary Harding made friendship bracelets and seed bead rings for her classmates in elementary school. “I even had a lucrative duct tape purse making operation for a minute in middle school.” While many craft just for fun, more and more crafters are turning it into a career. “We all have certain hobbies that we love to do,” said Tara, “so why not make a career out of it. People have been forced to think beyond the corporate world these days to have an income. I think the craft world is an awesome outlet for so many different people.” The unstable economy of the past few years has inspired many to take the leap. “When you decide to craft for a living you are literally taking your income into your own hands,” said Leela, “and you quickly realize the importance of a strong local community. It’s the support of your community that keeps you going. When you buy original, handmade goods you can know for sure that you are supporting that individual because you’re probably looking them in the face! You’re putting your money directly back into the local economy.” In a world full of big box stores and mass-produced everything, the decision to buy something handcrafted can make a big statement. For consumers, it is very easy to run to a big box store at any time of day for pretty much anything their heart desires, however crafters believe their products are more valuable and are certainly better CONTINUED ON PAGE 22 KeepitINtown.com

Making Sense of Social Brigette Flood, makingsenseofsocial.com

Twitter hashtags impact awareness Many disasters have left a big impact on the world recently, from natural ones like tsunamis, earthquakes and hurricanes, to man-made ones like the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon. All of them received coverage in the media, help from relief agencies and assigned hashtags to help promote the cause on Twitter. Twitter provided #OneBoston with the top promoted spot so people across the globe could get insight on the inspiring messages coming from and going to the people of Boston. The hashtag also provided awareness for Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick’s One Fund (onefundboston.com), which was established to help the people most affected by the tragic events. The top promoted spot on Twitter has a social street market value of about $200,000, so it was a super generous donation. Constantly creative, crowd-sourced Reddit jumped into help as well. A redditor created “Random Acts of Pizza” (randomactsofpizza.com/info.html) so people could pay for pies and have them delivered to homes hosting stranded marathoners. The effort proved so popular it expanded pie delivery to shelters, hospitals,

fire departments, police department and other random places people were congregating. The effort created a partnership with local provider Anytime Pizza who delivered over 1,500 of them in the post-blast hours. Lest you think that as a culture we’ve gone totally legit: social causes aren’t the only standout hashtags. Even though the world-changing event of 2011 – the Japan tsunami (#japanquake, #prayforjapan, #japan #tsunami) – generated close to 5,500 tweets per second (TPS, it’s known in the industry), it still lagged behind #tigerblood, one of Charlie Sheen’s #winning ideas that made him a standout celebrity on Twitter. Remember how he gained a million followers in 24 hours, the fastest in Twitter history, according to Guinness? Yep. But we’re not 100 percent superficial yet. Other standout, cause-driven hashtags that captured attention recently: #BostonStrong, #sandyhook, #prayersfornewtown, #hurricanesandy, #haiti. #tsunamistories, #libya, #ghaddafi, #syria, #egypt, #tunisia, #marriageequality, #gaymarriage, #SCOTUS. Twitter recently celebrated its 7th birthday. To be so young, you’ve made a big impact on news and the world. #wethankyou .

quality. “I believe more and more people are growing weary of the implications of big box retail,” said Leela. “You may be able to purchase items from these stores at a lower price point, but the environmental and social consequences are outrageous. Instead of buying five temporary fixes, why not buy one hand crafted, high quality item that will last?” “Mass production can’t compete with the value and intimacy of handcrafted items,” Cherry pointed out. “They are crafted by one person one at a time, and not by a machine that does twenty a second.” Not only are handcrafted items made with much care and creativity, but when you buy handcrafted you’re supporting a real, live human with talent and skills rather than a giant web of middlemen and giant corporations, and you’re keeping your money in your local community. “When you buy a handmade product you are making an investment in someone’s time and hard work,” said Miller. “We’re tired of owning all the same, cheaply made junk as everyone else. Where and

how we spend our money is always a political statement and purchasing directly from an artist is a huge one. We want to own something with heart and soul and something that was made with love, intention and attention to detail.” Hoehn simply states, “the way we spend or stretch a dollar these days is the biggest voice we can have.” Buying handmade also means you’re bringing something aesthetically pleasing into your life. Your home is a happier, healthier place when it is filled with items made with joy by hand. Joy comes from doing what you love, and these ladies love what they do. “I love coming up with an idea and then seeing it become a reality,” said Harding. “Making something with your hands is, one, a lovely skill, and two, reminds you of what you’re capable of. I love the experience of turning a vision or a dream into a reality,” said Laura Cherry. For more about ICE and Curatorial and its upcoming shows, visit ice-atlanta.com.

The Paces Ferry Exxon station is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, notably under the same ownership. How has this small business succeeded when so many of its kind have failed? Why are their customers so loyal and full of praise for a small gas station and car repair shop, even though its prices are not the cheapest in the area? Talking to owner Mike Graham about how he has run his business, the familiar code of the United States Military Academy at West Point came to mind: “Honor, Duty, and Country.” In Graham’s case the motto is “Honor, Duty, and People.” These have been Graham’s guiding principles since he struck out on his own in 1983 from his father’s business in Tucker – an Amoco station where he had started working when he was 14. When the spot on West Paces Ferry became available as an Exxon outlet in 1982, Mike, with one technician from his father’s station, one high school friend, who now has his own shop in Alpharetta, and two other friends, Ronnie Freeman and John Buckner, opened the gas station and service shop. Freeman, who possesses a rare Automotive Service Excellence certificate, has now worked 27 years as the master technician. Buckner left to work for Eastern Airlines, but returned when Eastern went bankrupt. Freeman’s nephew, Paul, who also is certified as an Automotive Service Excellence technician, has worked with them for 20 years. The depth of knowledge and experience of these technicians is hard to find today and difficult for car agencies to match. “It

is tough to hire a technician now,” Graham said. “There are so many different kinds of sophisticated cars with complicated computer systems. The equipment you need to diagnose problems is very expensive and has to be updated with new software about every two years. It is time consuming to train new people and requires a serious commitment from them to learn.” Because of its Buckhead location, Graham said they service a lot of high-end cars. “When the warranty is up, we can do 95 percent of the service for German, European and Asian cars.” When asked about the rest of his staff, Graham was eloquent on the subject of his manager, Andre Allen. “Without him, I would be unable to take any time off,” he said. “He is the best there is for satisfying customers and getting the right information to the mechanics.” Graham has a policy of hiring family members of employees and keeping his people for as long as they want to stay. Working under Andre is his son, Andre, Jr., who is also a student at Oglethorpe University. During the summer and holidays other teenagers are hired and most return whenever they can. This inclusive and happy environment is in great measure due to the personality and efforts of Mario Shropshire, another valuable family employee. Shropshire’s aunt, Shawn, “holds the fort” in the office with a ready smile for everyone. Her toughest job may be that she is surrounded by a lavish supply of candy, cake and ice cream treats. If they are made in the South, as are Moon Pies and Goo Goo Clusters, you can probably find them here.

Leslie Gordon, director of the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University, was bestowed the honor of Knight in the National Order of Arts and Letters, a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres. The honor was presented by the Consul General of France in Atlanta, Denis Barbet, at the Rialto Center in a recent ceremony. The National Order of Arts and Letters was established in France in 1957 to recognize eminent artists, writers and people who have contributed significantly to furthering the arts in France and throughout the world. Leslie Gordon joins the distinguished list of other Americans with the rank of Knight, including George Clooney, Tim Burton, and Malcolm Rogers, Director of Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Atlantans who have received this honor include Michael Shapiro, the Director of the High Museum of Art, and Anne Cox Chambers. As Barbet noted, Leslie Gordon’s vision to regularly program French and French-speaking artists such as Philippe Decouflé, Les Yeux Noirs, Angélique Kidjo, and Angelin Preljocaj (who performed as part of the inaugural France-Atlanta 2010) has been vital to the French/ Atlanta connection. The Thinking Artist Patrick Dennis

Stop Flying and Smile I am an artist and I’ve been thinking… Frequently I say out loud that I take only two things seriously in life: family and art, and sometimes not so much art. It’s not that I resist the weightier elements that can include health and welfare, but I do have a tendency to skim the surface of life like a dragonfly that attracts the sun on its effervescent wings, pausing only briefly between expeditions of discovery. Lately, I’ve been struggling with some pretty serious family issues that I had no way to prepare for in my wildest imagination. I’ve had to learn and listen to others (something I am not very good at) who frequently have what appear to be a more solid foundation and thus, wisdom to share. But still I want to fly and seek the sun. I think it’s in my California-based genetic code. Thanks, Mom! Now that I think of it, this actually explains her disposition and supercilious perspective as well as the power of heredity. But family issues aside, isn’t it true that sometimes we just want art to make us smile a bit? Just because a masterpiece is well, masterful in its technique and

depiction doesn’t mean it needs to be sad, morbid or serious in its subject or execution. Sometimes we find the simplest art the most appealing for visceral reasons. Consider the drawings of your children. You’re not expecting a Rembrandt, right? But there is no denying that those simple strokes of the crayon bring a smile to your face, and sometimes to others. And who hasn’t spent time wondering just what that young artist was trying to convey? Is there any reason other than experience that the results are less compelling? Recently, I was wandering along the Spring Festival on Ponce and saw something moving that was not a dog, a leash or pair of tennis shoes. Glinting metallic petals were spinning in the sun and breeze. I was drawn to a sculpture of found objects assembled in to a huge flower. As I got closer, I was impressed by the construction that included gears, rivets, annealed metal sheets, a transformer globe and many other parts that in themselves were not remarkable but once combined created a form begging for a smile. The artist is Kevin Duval from Wilmington, NC, which I know is a beautiful place with enviable coastline. I asked him more about where he lives and what he does than about how he came to

the conclusion that these parts belonged together. He described the beaches, the wind and sun and more than anything else, the feeling of simple joy he has in those elements. Listening, I believe I understood more about his motivation and creative process as well as the investment of his time and thoughts into creating something with simple appeal. I dug deeper to find the moving parts and inspected the fittings and balance out of curiosity, like a dragonfly that finds a tasty morsel and pauses his endlessly distracting journey. I’m glad I slowed down because the more I saw, the happier I became. There was absolutely nothing serious in this contemplation. It was just a joyful discovery.

Mike Lowery’s Art & Home

By Pamela Berger sweetpeachblog.com Mike Lowery likes silliness. He illustrates it every day in children’s books and greeting cards. He’s constantly drawing and scribbling new ideas that are offbeat and make kids giggle. He first handdraws fonts and images in his journal, then cleans them up and adds color on the computer. I love his style of illustration of these “Two Little Libros” books that are made for kids learning to speak both English and Spanish. Mike lives in an atomic ranch home in Decatur, Georgia along with his wife, Katrin Wiehle, who is a German children’s book illustrator and Mike’s young daughter, Allister. As they both are in the book business, books are plentiful. They love anything art related such as graphic novels, illustrations annuals and design publications. “We also buy loads of children’s books here in the States and when we travel, so we’ve accumulated a small library of international children’s books,” Mike says. There is a pretty simplicity to their space which I really admire and appreciate. Mike shared a few links to art found in their home; Alex Todaro, Stuart Kolakovic, About Today and Modern Anthem. Mike has an equal passion in music and loves to dabble in, as he shared, “indie rock with some synthesizers.” Currently, Mike is Professor of Illustration at SCAD Atlanta and is working on a series of books for Simon and Schuster and greeting cards for Hallmark. Mike and Katrin’s mid century

home has a walk through room in the center of the house which they use as their studio. Mike saysß, “It has one big window (that looks out over our backyard) and we put in a long, wooden counter top right under it to use as our drawing and work area. We love working right next to each other like that. I’m guessing we spend at least half the day in there.” A storybook life indeed...

Annie on the Go! Our contributor takes in roller derby, circus cats and more By Annie Kinnett Nichols When INtown asked me to write about the Atlanta Rollergirls, I jumped at the chance. My only dealing with roller derby was the Rachael Welch movie from the 70’s, Kansas City Bomber. I was expecting catfights, brawls and plenty of play-acting. What I didn’t expect was that it is a real sport and although their names are humorous (Hate Ashbury and Quadratic Abrasion, for example), these girls are dead serious when it comes to earning points on the rink. The league features four home teams – the Apocalypstix, Denim Demons, Sake Tuyas and Toxic Shocks – that compete

each season for the championship trophy. The home teams battle it out at the Yaarab Shrine Center on Ponce during their February-to-September season. There’s also an up-and-coming junior league for younger girls called Atlanta Derby Brats. Strict rules apply, but the Rollergirls can push each opposing team members with their hips or butts and push their own teammates into their competitors. There was so much action going on when I attended a recent game, it was hard to follow at first, but I totally got into it. Atlanta’s All-Star team entered 2013 ranked #14 in the world. Coming from behind in 2012 they won huge upsets and

nearly beat the top contenders, the Texas Rollergirls. This game is an international hit with fans and girls, and roller derby is even being considered for the Olympics in 2020. If you want to check out the Rollgergirls in action, there is a doubleheader on May 18. For tickets and information, visit atlantarollergirls.com. I also got to attend Circus Cats featuring the Amazing Astro-Cats This show was hysterical. Samantha Martin has created a vaudeville-style show of laughter and merriment with “trained” cats. More than 50 jump through hoops, walk on balls, do tricks, play cowbell and at the end of the show they feature a cat band called the Astro-Cats. There’s also a chicken, Gregory Peck, the most obedient animal of the show, who managed to stay on stage for his entire act. I don’t want to give away all the surprises, but suffice it to say cats have a hard time not wandering off into the audience where they are petted until a helper comes to bring the AWOL cat back to stage. The Circus Cats are rescue animals and after the show almost all the cats are up for adoption. For more, visit circuscats.com. The third show I caught was SeeThrough, an interesting, bawdy look at what is sexy and what lies inside and outside your personal comfort zone. Staged by PushPush Theater, attendees were propelled into the show by actors who give you a key and a number or letter. Then you are on your own to discover different rooms and different people along the way. Waiting to get into the “7 Minutes in Heaven” room was a show in itself and the feather filled tub room was one of my favorites visually. You can read about more of my adventures, including driving model trains and an update on my challenge to Susan Sarandon to play Sister Louisia’s owner Grant Henry to a game of ping-pong at AtlantaINtownPaper.com.

Go Green Greenprint Midtown Program wins award for innovative EcoDistrict plan

YOUR GUIDE FOR AN ECO-FRIENDLY LIFESTYLE

Midtown Alliance has been awarded the E3 Power of Place Award for the organization’s leadership efforts in developing Greenprint Midtown and the creation of the Southeast’s first urban EcoDistrict. Presented by the Metro Atlanta Chamber in partnership with the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the E3 award highlights companies, organizations, universities and individuals using innovative approaches to conserve metro Atlanta’s natural resources while improving the economy. The award focuses on such strategies as clean technologies, sustainable start-ups, solar energy, energy and water conservation, green buildings and strong partnerships. The Greenprint Midtown plan has provided a framework to bring the community together to continue to advance Midtown as an innovative, interconnected, and resourceefficient community – an EcoDistrict. Today, EcoDistricts are being created throughout the United States and the world from Portland, Oregon to Malmo, Sweden. EcoDistricts link green buildings with smart infrastructure and behavior change at a district scale to

drive innovation and economic development. EcoDistricts improve the environment and make economic sense, making Midtown more competitive and attractive to investors, businesses, employees, residents and visitors. “The award is a great validation of the hard work Midtown Alliance and our partners have put into the creation of the Midtown EcoDistrict over the last year,” said Kevin Green, CEO of Midtown Alliance. “Creating the Greenprint plan was just the first step in a multi-pronged approach to ensure Midtown is clean and green for years to come.” Green said Midtown is making good progress on numerous fronts including supporting greater energy efficiency and conservation in commercial and residential buildings through the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge, growing its rainwater harvesting systems, integrating recycling into streetscapes, improving transit access and mobility and adding to the more than 20 miles of new streetscapes and bike lanes for pedestrians and cyclists.

News you can Eat Culinary Journey EATING OUT | EATING IN | FOOD NEWS | WINE

Atlanta Food & Wine Festival returns May 30-June 2 By Sydia Bell Celebrating its third season, the Atlanta Food & Wine Festival returns to Midtown from May 30 to June 2. Co-founder Elizabeth Feicter said food enthusiasts will be led on a culinary journey throughout the region. “The festival shows the evolution of Southern cooking,” Feichter said, noting that the four-day event offers carefully crafted programs and demonstrations to entertain and educate consumers about the rich food and beverages of the South. Composed of three distinct activities – learning experiences, tasting experiences and special dinners – the culinary exploration encompasses everything from Latin influences and the rise of farm-totable dining. Feichter said letting the chefs and restaurants drive the festival is part of what makes the event so distinctive each year. For 2013, organizers prioritized creating immersive food experiences. Instead of the chefs demonstrating on stage, the norm at most food festivals, this year chefs and sous chefs will have the opportunity to prepare the food while mingling and interacting with the audience. Although the festival is known for highlighting the best and the brightest chefs in the industry, there will be spotlight on the next wave of chefs. In programming called The Next Wave of Talent, Chef John Besh asks emerging chefs to create dishes that touch upon what inspires them about the South and cooking with Southern ingredients. Led by industry experts, the learning experiences include smart and entertaining cooking and cocktail demonstrations running an hour in length. For example, guests can take a journey through the culinary traditions of Southern India with Chef Asha Gomez from Cardamom Hill, learn about the charms of bourbon or explore the intersection of Southern food and music – gospel to zydeco and bluegrass to blues – with Chef Sean Brock from Husk restaurant in Nashville. Participants can than enjoy tasting seminars and panel discussions as they peruse the culinary delights in the Tasting Tents. Curated by the chefs, foodies will pick a “trail” to follow and sample chicken, pig, lamb, seafood, farm fresh, Southern snacks, sweets, sandwiches, wines and spirits. Each day is followed with a selection of special

42 INtown | May 2013

events that extend the festival’s learning and tasting programs with special dinners and parties with out-of-town chefs, mixologists and sommeliers. Chef Linton Hopkins and mixologist Greg Best will also be reporting live on AM 1690 during their Feed Radio program. Teaching Teamwork to Kids When Cooking By Christine Fallucco Mud Pie Cooking School

At Mud Pie Cooking School, we often had siblings or friends attend class together. We paired the children at cooking stations to teach them teamwork in the kitchen and the importance of helping each other out. We explained this is no different than how it happens in professional kitchens. You can do the same at your home when you have children who want to help you prepare a meal for your family. The teamwork we taught took place in three phases: Setting your mis en place (pronounced miz on plas - a French term meaning “everything in place”); cooking your recipe; and preparing your table to eat. For the first phase, we asked the children to set their mis en place at their cooking station by assembling all ingredients and utensils needed to prepare each recipe. We required they do so before starting to cook. Prior to class, we laid out ingredients and utensils making it easiest for them to find

items. We helped each child according to their age and ability to read and identify food items and utensils. For phase two, we taught the children to take turns and help each other with each cooking act performed. For example, while one child carefully measured out ½ C. of the needed 1 C. of flour, leveled it off with the back of his or her plastic knife, another child held the bowl the dry item would be dropped into. Then, they rotated roles. This sharing of activities was required for all that we taught in class – mixing, whisking, cracking eggs, adding herbs and spices, cleaning up and setting the table. For the last phase, we gave every child a task to assist with clean up and setting of the table. Assignments included throwing out their trash, wiping down their station with a damp paper towel, returning food items to where they found them, delivering dirty utensils to the sink, and setting out plates, napkins, cups and silverware. Once a child completed a task, we quickly handed out another one to keep him or her busy. Children performed jobs with as minimal assistance from an instructor as possible. Sweet Peach: Curry Ketchup 2 private rooms for your next party

Chef Ron Eyester of Rosebud restaurant in Atlanta has a staple ketchup that he’s been By Pamela Berger using in his sweetpeachblog.com kitchen for years. Lucky for us, he’s decided to bottle it and sell it. With the help of Emily Myers of Emily G’s, this Curry Ketchup can now be a staple in our own kitchens, too. Ron originally developed the recipe to go with his scrumptious and popular eggplant chips. He describes the ketchup as having curry and clove flavors up front, which then mellows out into the ketchup flavor we all know and love. Recently, Ron was gracious enough to whip up some incredible dishes that highlight how the Curry Ketchup can be used. Emily was there with me and after I took some photos, we quickly licked our plates clean. Ron uses San Marzano tomato paste as his base but there are a plethora of ingredients that he’s added to give America’s favorite condiment a modern, delicious twist. Yet, as with all of Ron’s creations, there is nothing pretentious or intimidating with his approach. It’s all about simple clean flavors. If you’ve tried an Emily G’s jam or sauce, you know her concoctions are incredibly tasty and addictive. And I’m happy to report, her first collaboration with Chef Ron continues her knack of bottling ingredients that satiate and surprise. The newly launched Curry Ketchup is available online at emilygs.com, but if you’re in Atlanta, you can also find it at the Rosebud, Pine Street Market, Lucy’s Market and Beehive Atlanta. Ansley Parkside

By Kathy Dean Atlanta, especially Intown, is full of upscale shopping, world-class restaurants and a year-round calendar of events. It’s where everyone wants to be. Fortunately, there are some residences and office spaces that can honestly boast being on prime Intown property – and that are still available for purchase or lease. Located on the 28th to 50th floors of Buckhead’s tallest new tower, Sovereign provides residents with an opportunity to experience Intown living in a luxury high rise. The magnificent condominiums range in price from $800,000 to $2.7 million. Each condo is fitted with upscale finishes and fixtures, including high-end appliances, flooring and technologies. “We’re located within walking distance to some of the finest dining and shopping that Atlanta has to offer,” said Kristi Torgler, Director of MKT for Regent Partners. “And our building is home to Bistro Niko and Buckhead Club, so there’s fabulous dining and entertainment just steps away from home.” Sovereign also has three lounges and a 28th floor skyline pool with jacuzzi. Other amenities include outdoor grills, a guest suite, catering kitchen and membership to Buckhead Fitness. The condos’ popularity continues to rise and the numbers show it. Torgler reported that Sovereign is nearly 70 percent sold out, and her office has recorded close to $30 million in sales over the last year. “We suggest that interested parties make an appointment to schedule a tour. Our sales office is open seven days a week and provides valet parking.” Another great Intown option is Ansley Parkside, situated right in the middle of Ansley Park, Morningside and Midtown, where residents have the best of each neighborhood. Piedmont Park is just a short stroll away, as are shopping centers, grocery stores, restaurants and public transportation. The classic townhomes with the Charlestonian charm and dramatic views start in the mid $400,000s. “Ansley Parkside has a fabulous amenity area that features a pool and outdoor fireplace,” said Christa Huffstickler, VP of Sales, Neo The Astoria Luxe Group-Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty. “This is extremely rare in a community with only 41 homes.” Another plus is the extremely low HOA dues, only $250 per month, inclusive of all exterior maintenance and maintenance of the amenities. Understandably, such a great value in the center of town is going fast. Huffstickler added, “We’ve completely sold everything we have that’s finished, and are currently pre-selling our next building, scheduled to be completed in July. We anticipate that we’ll be sold and closed out of the entire community this year, as we only have one additional building left to construct.” New townhomes are available at Highland Park, KeepitINtown.com

located on the border of Inman Park and Old Fourth Ward, with a direct connection to the Beltline’s Eastside Trail. The homes range from 2,025 to more than 3,400 square feet and include features like two-car garages, finished terrace level bonus rooms and, in the larger homes, rooftop terraces with spectacular city views. “Obviously, the appeal of the Beltline is a big draw, but more than that, buyers want to live in a truly walkable neighborhood,” explained Michelle Horstemeyer, Vice President of Construction, John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods. “Highland Park’s proximity to the area’s restaurants and entertainment makes it the perfect destination for just that.” There’s been strong interest in the neighborhood from the very beginning, especially with the reasonable price range of the high $300,000s to $600,000s. Horstemeyer noted that all of the homes currently under construction are under contract, and reservations are now being taken for future buildings. She did offer homebuyers some hope, though. “Later this year, there’ll be a new offering of Intown luxury townhomes, as well as single family homes, by John Wieland at The Enclave at Collier Hills.” There’s room for businesses to move Intown, too, and when it comes to Atlanta, there’s no name more recognizable than Peachtree. “Professionals like the Peachtree Road address and there are very few opportunities for ownership along that corridor,” said Jeff Pollock, principal of Pollock Commercial. Overlooking Peachtree Road with floor-to-ceiling windows, The Astoria at The Aramore equals its prestigious location with Class A office condominiums that range from 800 to 14,000 square feet. The new building’s unbeatable location and high construction quality is only part of the story; each office condo is a clean site ready for an

Pollock continued, “The benefits at The Astoria at The Aramore are simple – quality, location and amenities at a reasonable price. And our residents enjoy some of the best restaurants in the city, like Restaurant Eugene, which is right here.” There are already commitments for over half of the space, and two sales closed since the beginning of the year. Mandel Media Group has offices in The Astoria at The Aramore and a law firm is scheduled to move in the early part of June. Midtown office space is at such a premium that tenants are lining up to get into Parkside@Armour, even though the renovation isn’t underway yet. The project is owned and developed by a partnership between Parkside Partners and Brookwood Investments. Over the past 10 years, Parkside has completed 10 loft office conversions, more than 400,000 square feet of space, with six of those projects located on the Beltline. According to Kyle Jenks, principal and owner of Parkside Partners, the renovation of the existing vacant warehouse is scheduled to start in the late summer, with the first tenants moving in early 2014. “The building has the best access to I-85 and I-75 of any loft office building in Atlanta,” he added. “Once completed, the project will contain 60,000 square feet of creative loft office space, including a new 2 level loft office or showroom building that will be developed on our excess land.” The warehouse, located in the area now known as the Sweetwater Design District, is anchored by the Sweetwater Brewery and has a unique mix of tenants–designers, artists, non-profits and industrial users. Individual offices

at Parkside@Armour will range from 1,000 to 10,000 square feet and will be built to tenant specifications. Some of the building’s unique features include 16-foot ceilings, skylights, exposed brick walls and dramatic views of Midtown. There will also be a common area conference room and break room, and tenants and their visitors will be able to enjoy a 3,000 square foot patio area. “We’re 25 percent pre-leased, and are in discussion with several other interested parties,” Jenks said. “We believe that Parkside@Armour will have the same success as our other loft office projects in Midtown, including The BlueHorse, Inman Alley and Parkside@Piedmont, which are currently all fully leased.”

Gardens for Connoisseurs Tour set for May 11-12 By Ally Wright Looking for something new to do for the mom in your family this Mother’s Day? Something beyond the fresh-cut bouquet? With the help of Atlanta Botanical Garden, how about turning those flowers into a whole garden? The 29th annual Gardens for Connoisseurs Tour, an event benefiting the Atlanta Botanical Garden, will open 11 of Atlanta’s private gardens to admirers and connoisseurs alike on May 11-12. Gardens are selected for their design and layout, use of space and terrain (if challenging), inclusion of sculpture or other features, history, sustainability, pedigree, uniqueness of plants grown or other surprises for visitors to enjoy. Most of the gardens were created by the owners themselves, though some hired designers and architects to help their vision come to life. The Tour Chair for 2013 is Pat King, and she has chosen a variety of gardens ready to amaze all visitors, including one woodland retreat that is wheelchair accessible and an urban edible garden that tastes as good as it looks. Most of the gardens are different every year, though there is one annual favorite: the garden of Ryan Gainey, a founder of the tour. Gainey is also an internationallyknown garden designer, and he fills his roses, camellias, and boxwood topiaries and tops

it off with a tree house, from which to take it all in. Other gardens that are sure to be a hit with the family are the 5-acre piece of land that includes several gardens and a labyrinth, and the Tuscan-esque one filled with ceramic sculptures and fountains. Some gardens may be more designed for meditation, others for chasing waterfalls. Each garden is something to discover. There’s also a gently-hilled garden where you might stumble upon the White Rabbit and be instructed to follow him to tea with the Cheshire Cat and Mad Hatter. Tickets to the Garden Connoisseurs Tour also include admission into the gardens at the Atlanta Symphony Associates Decorators’ Show House and a discount on tickets to see the inside. This garden, designed by landscapist Ed Castro, is reminiscent of the classical tradition, and is full of dramatic landscapes designed to frame and accentuate the French-style house. The tour is self-guided, and it is recommended to drive from site to site. It will be happening rain or shine. For more information on the specific gardens, or to purchase tickets, atlantabotanicalgarden.org. Gardens on the tour include (top to bottom) The home of Bill and Francis Creekmuir; The Boxwood House garden; and the home of Ryan Gainey. Photos courtesy of Atlanta Botanical Garden.

Honeycomb Studio

By Pamela Berger sweetpeachblog.com Courtney Hamill has a pretty good gig. Working full time in her backyard studio in Atlanta’s West Midtown district, she handcrafts porcelain and stoneware pottery. I particularly love her antler series. Courtney has found her niche in the market. As she recently shared, “There are very few well done ceramic horns and I don’t know of anyone making porcelain antlers like this.” Each antler is left hollow and is lightweight, making for a beautifully unique and decorative piece. For this past holiday season, Courtney also crafted decorative Turtle Doves, which have become quite popular. She particularly likes how good the doves look in multiples. Her studio is a work in progress but with the skylights and large windows, it offers incredible natural light. It’s a tranquil area for an artist to work- and it’s just a few footsteps from her back door. Courtney continues to expand her line of wares and has been playing with various sized vessels and holders, all of which I’d love for my own home. With an impressive collection created in just the past year, Courtney is an artist to watch. For more, visit honeycomb-studio.com.

Integral Structure demolished the shed down to the short brick walls and then expanded the structure over to a brick retaining wall. A slab was poured and the structure was rebuilt. The windows are salvaged casement windows and the front and rear doors are salvaged 8’ doors from an old bank. Plumbing and electrical was installed as well as skylights for additional daylight. There is also a covered work area to allow the artists to work outdoors. To find out more about Integral Structure, visit integralstructure.com.
