Han Vance did an interview with the BeltLine visionary Ryan Gravel on page 25. You may also recognize Han walking around town cleaning-up abandoned newspaper boxes. We’ve turned his photos of food into a sort of journal with Thom’s Diner on page 46. When we heard restaurateur Warren Bruno passed-away last month, we asked Chris Schroder to pay tribute. We knew Chris would find the words to capture Warren’s memory. The last time I saw Warren was this past winter when I was in the dredges of my own chemotherapy. I look up to his strength and endurance. And, I got goose bumps when I read Chris’s piece, which you can read on page 16. A lot of hands stir the pot to make INtown. Letter from the Editor Collin Kelley If you’re a film lover, then Atlanta is the place to be – both as a fan and a participant in the making of movies. Atlanta was branded as ”Hollywood South” more than 20 years ago as filmmakers flocked to the area, which provided authentic locations and a cheaper alternative to filming in Hollywood. Now, you can’t drive through an Intown neighborhood lately without seeing a film crew and celebrities, most recently Clint Eastwood, Justin Timberlake and Samuel L. Jackson. The old Lakewood Fairgrounds is now a shiny new studio for EUE/Screen Gems and, of course, Tyler Perry has built his movie/TV empire here in Atlanta. In this issue, Sandy Tyler looks into the big dollars coming into Atlanta thanks to film production, while our Studio cover provides a guide to all the film festivals happening this summer. Theatre for the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival, there’s a movie for all ages and tastes. We’re also celebrating summer with the help of our regular contributor Pamela Berger, who happens to be a television producer when she’s not writing about delicious eats, fabulous places to shop and timeless decorating ideas on her Sweet Peach blog. The cover photo of the delicious peach pie and our News You Can Eat section are devoted to the Cake Hag, who makes some of the sweetest treats in town. I’m jetting off to London this month for a series of readings from my novel, Remain In Light, and my poetry. And while I’m excited as hell, I’m also giddy about not having to re-check my bags at the new international terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Ground-breaking, tree-shaking pack of urban foragers feed the hungry Molly Dickinson Have you ever tasted mulberries? If you live in urban Atlanta, chances are a mulberry tree is staining the sidewalk purple just blocks from your door. Until recently, this bounty was wasted. Now, it’s feeding Atlantans who need it most. In 2009, Craig Durkin and Aubrey Daniels saw wild apples rotting in the street, while the city’s hungry and homeless struggled to find food. A few friends, buckets and afternoons later, Concrete Jungle took root. The all-volunteer nonprofit gathers the unclaimed native produce that flourishes in Atlanta soil, delivering it to organizations like Hosea Feed the Hungry and The Children’s Home in Decatur. Last year, they donated 3,209 pounds – everything from apples and pears, to loquats and persimmons. “Concrete Jungle is a commonsense, connect-the-dots, solutionbased organization.” Robby Astrove, an environmental educator and fixture in Atlanta’s eco-activism community, met Durkin in late 2009 on a hiking tour of Atlanta’s BeltLine. “Later that week, I stayed up until 4 a.m. and added all of the fruit trees I knew of. The next day, I got a call
from Craig and he said I just added more trees than what they added all of last year. I had to join the team!” By year two, their harvest had nearly doubled. Concrete Jungle’s online Food Map allows users to add trees that are “pickable” – either publicly or by owner permission. Every “pick” is volunteer-manned and organized by “scouts” who track which trees are fruiting and schedule accordingly. Picks happen May through November and at least

Wellspring Treasures in Virginia Highland helps women in need

One in four women are abused sexually by the time they reach adulthood. As a woman and mother to a young daughter, I wondered what can our community do to respond to such a crisis? Thankfully, I needed to look no further than one of my favorite streets in Atlanta – North Highland Avenue – for answers. Wellspring Treasures opened in April at 784 N. Highland Avenue (near Bill Hallman Original). At first glance, this is an upscale resale boutique that specializes in new and gently used furniture, clothing and house wares. Upbeat manager, Brianna Campbell, greets me and explains how these bargains help women and girls with broken pasts rebuild their lives. Proceeds from the store (and the other locations outside the Perimeter) cover about one-quarter of the budget for the nonprofit, Wellspring Living. Started more than a decade ago, the organization helps girls and women survivors of childhood sexual abuse move towards hopeful futures. The group provides participants with therapy, education, life skills and spiritual renewal – to heal the body, soul and spirit. Maria (name changed to protect her identity) was the first woman to receive services at Wellspring Living. She came from a past of neglect, drug addiction, childhood sexual abuse and then trafficking. Pimps often prey on young runaways. They offer food and shelter to establish trust, but then they coerce the girls into selling themselves and threaten violence if the girls resist. Drugs are often involved, as in Maria’s case, and addiction makes it harder for the girls to escape. But Maria is a survivor. Wellspring Living gave her a home, counseling, life skills training, and hope for a new life. A decade later, Maria is happily married and has a little girl with big curly hair. She is pursuing a photography career and is a spokesperson for the organization. Bargain hunting has never felt so good now that I know the purpose behind it. Wellspring Treasures has steals on designer jeans, trendy jewelry and must-have pottery. I also learned that this store operates almost completely on volunteer power, so the need for consistent volunteers is always high. There are a variety of opportunities ranging from accepting and pricing donations to merchandising and customer service. I make a mental note – what a meaningful service project for my daughter’s Brownie troop or my neighbor’s book club. While watching my five year old use his plastic bat to catapult a ball across the yard, images of him being a little golf ingénue run through my head: Could he be a natural? Is he ready to learn the centuries-old game that is such a national pastime? Ingénue or not, the idea of him learning golf is appealing for many reasons – motorskill development, increased mental focus, and improved physical ability, just to name a few. Now Intowners have a great place to send their kids to accomplish just that. Kids Golf Academy is a state-of-the-art, indoor golfing facility that specializes in golf classes, lessons, and camps for kids ages 3-18. Owner David Bell, a native Australian and varsity golf coach at Atlanta International School, opened his academy on Miami Circle two years ago. He is planning to open a second location near West Paces Ferry and I-75 soon. “We really emphasize how fun the game is and make it exciting for them,” David says of his academy’s success. “The kids pick it up easily, and have a great time when they’re here.” Kids Golf Academy boasts 5,000 squarefeet in their Miami Circle location. This includes a putting green, chipping area,

hitting bays, and high-tech simulators that let the kids experience real-life visual effects when they are playing. They can even “compete” against well-known professional golfers with the simulators. Their slowmotion video analysis allows for instant feedback during instruction as well. “We make a point to keep the activities varied and exciting for the kids throughout the classes so they are always engaged,” David points out. “They aren’t just hitting balls the whole time. They are learning the fundamentals and mechanics of golf in a fun and motivating environment. Morningside resident Lele Ruby has been sending her two boys, ages 5 and 7, there for almost 2 years now. “David is very positive with them, and they love going,” she says. “My son, Riley, recently competed in the Kids World Golf Championship, and it was such a fantastic experience for him.” With Atlanta’s hot summer on the horizon, Kids Golf Academy’s indoor summer camps are a great way to introduce the sport of golf to your kids. They are offering camps every week from May 28 through Aug. 10. You can choose half-day camps (9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. ) or full day (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Regular hour-
long, group classes are offered in 12-week sessions for the different age groups. Private lessons can be arranged to accommodate your schedule. A Remarkable Young Golfer Golf enthusiasts will recognize Martavious Adams and his winning smile from TV spots for The First Tee that run during major pro tournaments. This innovative program tutors children in areas such as self-management, goal setting and interpersonal skills through the game of golf. I sat down with the Ben Franklin High School senior and his coach, Nyre Williams, at Charlie Yates golf course to learn more about The First Tee of East Lake and this remarkable young man.
Martavious, who has now become the face of the program? Martavious picked up the game very quickly. He had a single digit handicap in less than two years but more importantly he went from a C student to an A student. The younger kids really look up to him and he volunteers so much of his time helping teach them. In 2010 he won the prestigious Bill Dickey Invitational, which brings in minority youth golfers from all over the country to compete.
Coach Williams, let me start with you. You also serve as the Director of the First Tee at East Lake. Can you give a brief overview of the program? We currently have 676 kids enrolled. We teach life skills as well as golf and split the kids into four levels – Par, Birdie, Eagle and Ace so there is a progression as they mature as people and golfers. Who founded the program? The developer Tom Cousins was largely responsible for not only this program but for so many of the positive initiatives in this area including Drew Charter School. The PGA is also one of the trustees of the First Tee. Each year we get to have a couple of our kids act as on-course reporters from the tournament at East Lake Golf Course which is a lot of fun. And what can you tell me about
Your most memorable one? For someone like me who has played a lot of golf in their 40 years and never carded an ace this might be a frustrating story to hear. Anyway, as you were saying… What? They’re not something you like, count, are they? Well, like I was saying the most memorable one I had was on a trip to Scotland – we got to play six of the 11 courses in St. Andrews on an eight day trip – and I dropped one in on one bounce on #13 at Kingsbarns. What is it about golf that can impact a kid’s life in ways that soccer or basketball cannot? It’s unique in that you actually communicate with your competitors and
it helps you learn life skills and even some business skills. It’s also a lifetime sport whereas with most others people have to stop playing when they are about 35. Tell me about it... I hear you had a chance to play with Tom Watson? I’ve played several rounds with Tom Watson and he is an even better person than he is a golfer and he still hits it pure. I’ve also played with Jim Furyk and John Cook. Did you beat any of them? No!

I’m still undecided but perhaps The College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick. So what do you do when you aren’t on the golf course or focusing on school? I play a lot of Ultimate Frisbee.
You don’t strike me as someone who is too stressed out but do you feel pressure being a point man for this organization? What’s life without pressure? But no, it’s not overwhelming and I think it is helpful in school and on the course to have a little pressure on me.
A couple of months ago I played in a tournament here at Charlie Yates and you were stationed on the second tee for a “Beat the Pro” promotion. Somehow my wife got it closer to the pin than you and now she claims it as her greatest golfing achievement ever. So…what the heck happened? Well, it’s not polite to beat a lady is it? I wanted her to feel good about her game!

Michele Stumpe in Africa
After months of planning, attorney Michele Stumpe led half a dozen people on this latest international journey with the nonprofit she founded in 2009, Children of Conservation. The organization is dedicated to the conservation and protection of endangered species in third world countries through education, habitat preservation and wildlife sanctuary support. Stumpe just returned from a 10-day journey to Africa, where she helped provide medical attention for children and animals in need. She and a group of volunteers traveled with food and medical supplies that her colleagues at Taylor English Duma LLP donated. Stumpe and the group of volunteers accomplished so much more than they had ever hoped in such a short amount of time. Traveling with the group was firm client Dr. Katarina Nalovic, aka “Dr. Kat,” along with three medical

While in Africa, Dr. Kat and her staff completely organized the vet facility and supplies, providing physicals to all of the workers and their families, many of whom had never even seen a real doctor. Dr. Kat’s surgical expertise was also put to good use by helping to stitch up a highly endangered species of baboon, the male drill. He was injured in a battle for dominance over his group. Dr. Kat also helped perform a hernia operation on another drill and a wing surgery on an African grey parrot. Dr. Kat and her staff were not the only superstars on this trip. Dr. Kat’s husband is a mechanic, who races and builds Formula One racecars. By the end of the trip, he overhauled the sanctuary’s Land Rover, which was on its last leg, as well as repaired their power tools and lawn mower. Stumpe’s husband, Kerry, has a background as an architect, which came in handy as he helped the center design it’s new duiker

Community event raises money for Press On to CURE Childhood Cancer Fund After a five-year battle against neuroblastoma, Patrick Chance passed away on January 9, 2012, which was also his 9th birthday. Many people remember Patrick as an amazing son and brother, fun friend, talented Lego architect and nature lover. The sixth annual tennis tournament,
Play for Patrick, was held last month at the Druid Hills Golf Club in his honor. The event also included Paddle for Patrick encouraging children to play in the pool with activities celebrating Patrick’s life and their friendship with him. Specifically the funds from this event go to building a new MIBG treatment room at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Egelston Campus, which will be dedicated in honor of Patrick. Erin Chance, Patrick’s mother, explains, “We travelled with Patrick to Philadelphia for four MIBG treatments. MIBG is a radiolabeled iodine that is injected and used to diagnose, stage, and monitor neuroblastoma. But the dose can be increased and then acts as a targeted radiation therapy. It is not curative but is very successful and this treatment will become part of front line treatment. There are only 5 places in the country that administer this because it requires a room with lead walls and other radiation safety measures. ” More than 25 percent of children diagnosed with cancer will die within five years. The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation has announced the addition of five new members to its Board of Trustees. Under the leadership of Chairman Thomas M. Holder, the Children’s Foundation Board is charged with raising critical funds to help meet the growing needs of one of country’s leading, not-for-profit pediatric healthcare systems. Remembering Warren Bruno
A visionary friend to many neighborhoods and loved ones Chris Schroder The first time I ever stopped in Atkins Park restaurant on N. Highland Avenue was in the fall of 1994, when I was selling ads for a new publication called Atlanta INtown (then called Atlanta 30306). I sat down with Sandra Spoon, who assured me they would buy an ad in our new venture. “Our owner, Warren Bruno, is very supportive of everything in the neighborhood,” she assured me. No truer words were ever spoken. Not only did Warren support us generously through the years, he previously started the SummerFest event, which draws more than 50,000 people to support the residentially focused civic association. He also co-founded the neighborhood business associations in Virginia Highland and Buckhead, where he used to own Aunt Charley’s, a favorite bar of my friends back in the 1970s. He loved biking, flying planes and hot air balloons. Warren was even more supportive of Sandra, his business partner whom he later asked to marry him, and Kevin Drawe, his business partner in the Smyrna location of Atkins Park.
Warren died last month after a courageous and inspirational battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He never let the diagnosis slow him down. He battled it with his characteristic drive and charm, raising money for medical research. He served on school councils, on Atlanta’s license review board – he even ran for city council one time. He was a diehard Atlanta Falcons fan, organizing busloads of fans to local and away games. In the last few years, he scaled back, taking one of his sons to the game and to giant tailgate parties he helped organize. He had amazing vision, proven one day when he walked into an abandoned cavernous basement space in White Provisions on the westside. The landlord thought Warren was crazy, but he saw the opportunity to start an amazingly successful bar called Ormsby’s. Our neighborhood, city and all of us who loved him dearly lost a wonderful friend when Warren took his final hot air balloon ride to heaven, where I’m sure he’s busy organizing his new neighborhood in a tailgate party I hope to join one day. A Look Back Ann Taylor Boutwell June 2, 1929: Honoring Asa Griggs Candler, Sr., Emory University Trustees in Atlanta’s Druid Hills issued a memorial resolution recognizing public service as the greatest achievement of its chief benefactor. Three months after his March burial in Westview Cemetery, Atlanta continued to laud him. After 83 years, a trail of stories still surrounds the Coca-Cola mogul’s life as an entrepreneur, prominent banker, realtor, philanthropist, civil servant, mayor, husband and father. A new book by Atlanta author Ann Uhry Abrams titled Formula for Fortune tells the story of how Asa Candler discovered Coca-Cola and turned it into the wealth his children enjoyed. Read more at annabrams.com. June10, 1905: The first issue of the German newspaper, Georgia Deutsche Zeitung, was published in Atlanta by Max Oppenheim. The editor had recently moved to Atlanta from Birmingham. The paper came out every Saturday and Oppenheim’s office was at 116 Central Avenue. June 23, 1924: Contractor A.V. Gude excavated the dirt and prepared the foundation for the 12-story Wynne Claughton Building, located on the southwest corner of Ellis Street and Carnegie Way. Atlanta architect G. Lloyd Preacher designed the structure’s curved corners as a solution to the site’s triangularshape. When the million dollar development opened—ahead of schedule— on April 12, 1925, the contractor, the architect, and the building’s namesakes—Morgan T. Wynne and Ed N. Claughton, president and vice president of the Wynne Realty Company—were among the building’s first tenants. The exterior remains much as it did when completed in 1925. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places this past March, the building is now a Courtyard Marriott hotel. June 13, 1915: Eugene and Maybelle Stephens Mitchell, along with 14-year-old daughter Margaret, attended the University of Georgia’s commencement exercises in Athens. Their 19-year-old son, Stephens Alexander Mitchell, was a member of the senior class. Like his father, Stephens became a well-known and respected attorney and historian in Atlanta. He was the editor of the Atlanta Historical Journal from 1930 to 1966. June 17, 1924: Mary Rice Malone married Robert Tyre Jones, known in the golfing world as Bobby Jones. The wedding took place at 8:30 p.m. in the Druid Hills home of the bride’s parents Mamie Rice and John N. Malone. Father James Horton of Sacred Heart Catholic Church performed the ceremony. The maid-of-honor was Katherine Haverty and the best man, Richard Garlington. Miss Malone, a member of Junior League, graduated from Washington Seminary and made her debut in 1921-1922. Jones graduated from Tech High, Georgia Tech and Harvard University. At Harvard he was a member of the Owl Club and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He is associated in business with Adair Realty Company. After honeymooning in Asheville, the couple resided in Druid Hills in the home of his parents Clara Thomas and Robert Purdemus Jones. The couple’s gravesite is Oakland Cemetery. Celebrating Dads who Give Back Dads hold a special place in my heart. After my mom died when I was 12, my dad became my life teacher. The biggest lesson he taught me was to discover the joy in giving back and helping others. I’ve been doing just that ever since. This Father’s Day, I celebrate all dads who are giving back and teaching this same lesson to their children. An Atlanta dad worth celebrating is Tom Lynch. Tom is co-founder of a nonprofit organization that he started with his daughter, Miranda, and CEO of a for-profit venture, Worthwhile Wine Co., that imports sustainably-made wines from some of the most vulnerable terrain in the world. He took some time out of his busy life, between his daughter’s high school graduation and his travels abroad, to share about how and why he gives back. What was the inspiration to start your non-profit Isipho? Four years ago, my daughter Miranda and I went on a father/daughter vacation to South Africa. In between spending five days on safari and five days around Cape Town, the two of us spent five days living

and volunteering in a remote Zulu village. The immersive experience had the impact I had hoped and led to much more. That trip planted the seed in Miranda’s mind that she could and should take time out of her life to help improve the lives of others. That trip was the inspiration for us to start Isipho (Zulu for “gift). Today, Isipho is an organization that empowers the people of Inzinga, South Africa, to break the cycle of poverty and dependence one food garden at a time. How did that lead to you starting a socially-responsibly business? Out of the experience of working alongside my daughter to make a difference, I was inspired to do the same in my money-earning role for our family. I quit my VP position at a major agency and started Worthwhile Wine, which imports sustainably-made wine from South Africa, Argentina and Chile. These are countries where taking care of the environment can go hand in hand with helping to uplift the impoverished workers. Worthwhile Wine is a purely for-profit business, but it is a model of sustainable capitalism, looking at the triple bottom line of profits, people and planet. Why is it important to you, as a dad, to give back? As a person, it just feels good to do the best possible thing you can. Life simply feels better, even on bad days. As a parent, there is very little we can do that is more important than living our values. Kids are really smart and I don’t think we’re always aware of when we’re sending mixed messages. As
parents, it is more often about our actions than just our words. Giving back sends a direct message to your kids about what is important in life. What is your Living by Giving dream? There is a great movement going on that blends the capitalistic innovations in non-profit organizations, with sustainable, earth/people-friendly forms of running forprofit businesses. Worthwhile Wine is purely capitalistic, but it is a slightly more evolved form of capitalism that is more sustainable and looks at stakeholders (employees, community, planet), not just shareholders. I hope these trends accelerate and I hope to continue to be a part of this movement as it spreads. Here are Tom’s three tips to take action and get involved: 1. Listen to your heart: Everyone has something inside that they care deeply about. Everyone has seen a situation they wish were different. Figure out where your passion is, even if it is a small thing.
2. Do your research: The Internet is a great way to find local or far-flung organizations working on the thing you’re passionate about. You can search online your cause interest with the city in which you live or look up an organization that you have heard about through friends or coworkers. Websites today are able to provide ways to help. 3. Act with others: It’s amazing the impact you can have with just a little time or money. It all counts and it all makes a difference. For the sixth year in a row, Piedmont Bark was host to the 2012 Pet Cotillion, an annual benefit for Pets are Loving Support (PALS). The Pet Cotillion, an on-line fundraiser where owners posted their furry friends and solicit winning votes through monetary donations, saw over 200 attendees and crowned the 2012 SpokesPet, Arrow. “The thing I look forward to the most

Keep Atlanta Beautiful opens second center Keep Atlanta Beautiful has opened a Community Recycling Center at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, 2715 Peachtree Road in Buckhead. Located in the church’s lower parking lot, the center is open the first Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Electronics and latex paint are accepted and additional recyclables will be added in the coming months. This is the second recycling center opened by KAB, with the one in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood at the Walden School, 320 Irwin St., already proving to be a success. It’s open the second Saturday of every month with the same hours as Buckhead.
Residents have dropped off nearly 20,000 pounds of electronics at the Fourth Ward location, spurring the need for the second recycling center. KAB’s Peggy Denby said the decision to open the location in Buckhead is based on surveys taken in recent months, which show that many residents were driving to the Fourth Ward to dispose of their recyclables. Both centers are open to the public and most items are free to drop off. There is a $10 handling fee per TV (cash only) and fees for latex paint recycling, which vary by can size. Georgia needs your garbage! By Mary Harrington Have you ever taken a real good look at the things you throw away every day? If you did, you’d discover that people in metro Atlanta are throwing away over a million tons a year of very easy to recycle items. Things like cardboard, newspaper, aluminum, steel, glass, and plastics make up a huge percentage of the region’s garbage. Oddly enough, Georgia has some of the best markets in the country for most of these recyclables – and industries are searching far and wide for the things we throw away every day. For example, carpet mills in North Georgia use PET bottles (like soda and water bottles) in their carpet production process. These mills also use HDPE (milk jugs) as a feedstock and yet residents in Atlanta throw away over 70,000 tons of the PET and HDPE bottles the mills in Dalton pay to get from other states. These easily recycled plastic bottles KeepitINtown.com
are valuable resources in Georgia’s manufacturing sector. Georgia paper mills consume used newspapers, old cardboard, office paper, mixed paper, and paperboard to make new paper products, but Atlantans annually throw away over 900,000 tons of this valuable manufacturing resource. All of these paper products can be recycled at the curb in our City of Atlanta neighborhoods, and large amounts of cardboard can be taken to area drop sites (see earth911.org to find more locations around Atlanta and more information about recycling). There’s an aluminum recycling plant in Greensboro, Ga. that has to buy used aluminum beverage cans from all over the Southeast and Puerto Rico. The owners of this facility would much rather pay lower freight costs by getting the 20,000 tons of aluminum cans metro residents throw away. State steel recycling operations would also prefer to get the 40,000 tons of steel cans thrown away. The City of Atlanta has a comprehensive curbside recycling program for single and family residences and some multi-family buildings. These customers pay for recycling service whether they use the service or not. The recycling program is called “single stream,” which means all the things accepted in the program go into one container – no sorting necessary (the sorting is done later at area processors). Businesses in Georgia need the recyclables we throw away, and someday recyclers may be rewarded with lower garbage fees.

Trees Atlanta brings sheep to Chastain Park The sheep are coming, and kudzu is on the menu. Local nonprofit Trees Atlanta, in partnership with Chastain Park Conservancy, will be hosting the event Breakfast with the Sheep on Friday, June 8, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. to kick off a summer of invasive-plant-eating around Atlanta. Trees Atlanta has hired a herd of more than 100 hungry sheep to tackle acres of kudzu that grow in Atlanta’s greenspaces, and the herd’s first stop is Chastain Park. The Atlanta community is invited to have breakfast with a handful of the sheep (other refreshments
besides kudzu will be provided for the humans, generously provided by The Ritz Carlton Buckhead), feed the sheep, participate in arts and crafts, and learn why invasive plant removal is vital to a healthy urban forest. Girl Scouts Turn 100 Some of my fondest childhood memories are from times I spent as a Girl Scout, so when my two daughters were old enough to join, I jumped at the chance to get them involved, too. Through my time spent as a Scout and then later as a Troup Leader for both daughters, I have experienced the organization’s awesome ability to teach important life lessons, including leadership responsibilities, female empowerment, and respect for the world around us. Protecting the environment has always been a part of the Girl Scout culture and I thank them for the opportunities as a young child to experience nature first hand, meet animals in their natural habitats, and discover how our natural systems support all life. I couldn’t have been more proud to collect badges that told the world I was a hiker, a camper, or had taken the time to learn about flowers and trees. These experiences helped further instill my environmental ethic and helped to shape who I am today. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts, and to celebrate they have launched the Forever Green Take Action program, a global effort to improve the environment and protect natural resources. As an extension of their overall environmental commitment, this year-long program encourages everyone to reduce waste by eliminating single-use plastic from our daily lives, save energy by turning off lights and other electronics when they’re
not in use, and to increase green space and wildlife habitats by planting rain gardens. Everyone, not just girls, can participate, and everyone is encouraged to make his or her pledge to help on girlscouts.org/ gsforevergreen. I am so proud of the Girl Scouts’ monumental milestone and their ongoing commitment to empower girls to do big things. Did you know that all the female astronauts, 70 percent of female legislators, and 80 percent of female business owners started out as Girl Scouts? Through the Forever Green program, girls are learning that their simple actions, like using a reusable shopping bag or turning off a light when leaving a room, collectively make a huge impact in helping to preserve and protect our planet. Already the successes seen through their efforts are teaching that their daily actions are important and that with hard work, anything is possible. BELTLINE VISIONARY Ryan Gravel remains positive about future of project

In a three-part series, Atlanta INtown has profiled the people behind the Atlanta BeltLine, the 22-mile loop of walking trails, parks and eventual light rail that encircles the city core. Dropping into the Old Fourth Ward
Skate Park with the original visionary behind the BeltLine, Ryan Gravel, I ask him if he could envision this when he was sitting in class at Georgia Tech a decade ago. “No. This is pretty incredible,” Ryan Gravel answers. “The Fourth Ward Park was part of the Fourth Ward Master Plan, the BeltLine just gave it a little push. Cities have to compete. The majority of younger people want to live in urban areas,
and the cities that want those people have to create areas they would want to live in. The BeltLine changes not only the way the city is but also the way people think about the city, what people imagine they might do on the weekend, why they would come to a city for a convention or to go to school.” Born in Louisiana and raised in Chamblee, Gravel found the sprawling Atlanta suburbs to be a less than
perfect universe. He attended Georgia Tech for college, earning a bachelor’s degree in architecture and two master’s degrees. While there, he dreamt of a redeveloping the preexisting yet long-abandoned historic rail corridor. Using well laid out urban areas such as Savannah and Paris as his models, Gravel envisioned a connected and ultimately more walk-able city. The preliminary plans for a belt line project in Atlanta were released as his master’s thesis. As an employee of Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein Architects after college, Gravel was encouraged by coworkers to keep the dream alive by distributing his idea to people of influence in Atlanta. “If we just keep talking about it long enough,” the thinking went, “maybe it will happen.” Cathy Woolard, the then Councilwoman of District 6 and chair of the city transportation committee, latched onto the concept and was its first public official as champion. Gravel is currently employed at architectural firm Perkins + Will, which contracted to be responsible for the design and development of the BeltLine. His professional path to actually working on the building of the BeltLine has been circuitous and multi-experiential. “I joined Perkins + Will in 2008, before we had the BeltLine contract. The TAD (Tax Allocation District) passed for the whole BeltLine in 2005, creating a source for some funding over 25 years. I also spent about a year doing urban planning independently under my company Gravel, Inc. I was with the City of Atlanta’s Bureau of Planning for about a half of a year. I was a volunteer for years with Friends of the BeltLine after founding that; later I was able to make it as a full-time job. Then later I worked for the BeltLine Partnership and now more recently on the Board of BeltLine Partnership. It’s amazing to be working on this project.” The Transportation Initiative (also called T-SPLOST) is up for vote in the 10-county Greater Atlanta Metro region on July 1, where the approval of a one-cent sales tax could yield significant traffic reduction via a myriad of diverse transportation projects. The BeltLine transit projects would have an advanced implementation timeline if the initiative passes. Gravel seems confident of the BeltLine’s future regardless. Several newer projects throughout the United States have recently looked to the Atlanta BeltLine as a guiding influence for part of an urban model. I ask Gravel if he had a specific project that influenced his vision. “Not really,” he replies, “a few of the things I saw in Paris. It just came together as an idea and then that idea kept evolving...and it keeps evolving today.” beltline.org

Roll Cameras! The movie industry is big business for Atlanta and Georgia By Sandy Tyler Melissa McCarthy was just at a Braves game, Paula Patton was seen sipping drinks at the Midtown W Hotel and Amy Adams was taking pictures with fans in the Fado Buckhead bathroom. Not to mention the sightings of Jason Bateman, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Alba and Clint Eastwood all over town. If it seems like Hollywood’s stars have left the West Coast and relocated to Atlanta, you’d be right. The entertainment industry is big business in Georgia thanks to the Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act recently amended by Gov. Nathan Deal. The most recent version of the bill, passed in 2008, offers a 20 percent income tax credit to qualified film, TV and commercial productions shooting in Georgia with an additional 10 percent tax credit given to productions that embed a Georgia promotional logo in the tiles or credits or as product placement within the content of the production. There was also the added incentive of an 8 percent sales tax credit for qualifying production purchases in Georgia, which will return to the state’s coffers on Jan. 1, 2013. The result of such an attractive incentive package has been a staggering 1,000 percent increase in the film and entertainment business in Georgia since 2007. From July 2010 through June 2011, 336 productions were shot in Georgia with spending of more than $689 million and an economic impact of more than $2 billion dollars in the state. Thirteen TV series were in production in the spring of 2012, according to Stefanie Paupeck, Communications Specialist with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, with countless other movies, commercials, music videos and TV pilots currently being shot in and around the Atlanta area. And although the tax incentive is the main driver for

the amount of work being done in Georgia, attracting this level of business takes a commitment from the whole state. In order to educate and prepare the state’s counties to service the needs the of entertainment industry, the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment office introduced the Camera Ready program which provides fast and easy access to county production resources and location information. Significant economic impact can be felt on the local level including the hiring of local residents, hotel stays and purchases of local goods and services. There are countless stories throughout the state of small businesses growing or in some cases being saved because of the impact of a large production coming to town. “In the 1990s, people came to Georgia to shoot Southern stories, and that was it. Now the entertainment industry is shooting and spending money all over the state of Georgia,” says Linda Burns, an Atlanta based producer and production manager. And although the increase in business has meant greater availability of equipment and sound stages, crew is one of the areas where the industry is trying to keep up. Seeing the need for well-trained production assistants (PAs), those beginning their careers in the production industry, Burns teaches PA Academy classes through the Atlanta Film Festival whenever her schedule permits. In 2011, she even taught an advanced course for production assistants, underwritten as part of a federal grant for job training in film and entertainment in Georgia, to prepare PAs for work on films and episodic TV sets. Atlanta is now a legitimate film production center, right up there with New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, and local industry veterans are working to fill the needs

Campus MovieFest Festival has its roots in Virginia Highland
By Tom Karsch You wouldn’t know just by looking at it, but a run-down two-bedroom apartment with peeling white paint in the middle of the Virginia Highland was the birthplace of the world’s largest student film festival. Four friends – David Roemer, Dan Costa, Vijay Makar, and Ajay Pillarisetti – were students at Emory University in 2001 when they decided to see what would happen if they gave their fellow classmates some Apple laptops, camcorders and one week to make their own five-minute films. That first year, they surprised everyone, including themselves, when they packed Glenn Memorial Auditorium full of 1,500 filmmakers and fans to watch the very first Campus MovieFest finale. The four students founded Ideas United, a company now with 25 full-time staff and 100 more around the globe, running Campus MovieFest, music events, and a production company that leverages the best of the next generation of content creators. Today, Campus MovieFest boasts over 500,000 student participants at over 100 schools. The CMF filmmakers continue to receive all the gear they need to make short movies for free, with campus events throughout the school year. The top movies from each school then compete for a chance to screen at CMF Hollywood, an international event featuring awards, receptions, and workshops with industry professionals held at the major studios in Los Angeles. CMF movies are also shown at screenings at the Cannes International Film Festival, in-flight on Virgin America, on television, and various outlets online including campusmoviefest.com. CMF’s talented young filmmakers also get invited to an exclusive network as part of Ideas United Productions, started as a way to get professional and paid experience for top CMF filmmakers, and provide high-quality, authentic, yet lower cost, content for companies ranging from AT&T, Panasonic, and Revlon to smaller businesses looking to leverage local talent. Though they’ve moved on from that old house in Virginia Highland to larger more secure offices in Decatur, it’s still a growing company with a simple mission; to give students everywhere the opportunity to share their stories with the world. There are hundreds of films on the Campus MovieFest website; for starters I would recommend two films from their alma mater that have won major awards at the last two grand finales. The first is student Ian Chi’s Tick Tock, which was chosen among thousands of entries as Best Picture for 2011, and The Gerstein Report, produced by Emory students, Matthew Fennell and Matthew Ryckman and winner of Best Drama at the 2010 International Grand Finale. Shortly after purchasing Instagram for $1 billion, the behemonth social media site is offering investors a chance to join their team. It’s a gamble, as all stock purchases are. Everyone’s speculating if Facebook will stumble after the IPO, á la Groupon, or rise to crazy new highs like Apple who’s been hovering in the $500-600 range lately. Not a bad return on investment if you bought it at $8/share back in the late 90s. So what impact could Facebook’s IPO have on you? In addition to the fact that the IPO is going to be a landmark milestone that underlines the strength of web-based technologies, that it’s likely to be the second largest US IPO in history (VISA Inc.’s 2008 IPO is largest, according to Dealogic), that there will be lots of buzz speculation around it, there are also user-based changes that might occur, such as: Apps – get ready for more. Facebook needs to acquire, build and gain momentum
with their platform-specific apps, especially mobile ones. Screens are getting smaller, users don’t rely on desktop computers anymore. Facebook has to capitalize on this ongoing shift and apps are one of the easiest. Ads – it’s one of the big ways they make money, but Facebook needs to figure out a way to diversify their revenue sources. There’s likely to be an uptick in Facebook ads in the short-term, which seems annoying for users. There’s been a lot of recent blowback about ad efficacy from major brands, so the company will be working diligently to find other ways to capitalize on their colossal audience of 900 million. Whispers of a Facebook search engine aren’t going away. All will become clearer over time, but for now, it’s fun to watch and speculate along. It’s the changing nature of social media that keeps it interesting.

of a thriving industry. After 14 years as a talent agent in Atlanta, Jennifer Kelley founded Big Picture Casting along with her partner Rita Harrell in 2011. “We’re doing a little bit of everything – features, commercials, industrials, you name it,” says Kelley. Big Picture Casting is also responding to the industry’s desire for the best talent, teaching valuable workshops that include showing local talent how to perform well in
auditions and even how to drink properly on camera, a skill that’s actually much harder than it might seem. “The quality of talent is rising and the actors here are getting bigger opportunities and training in order to be better. We love the work that’s coming in (to Atlanta), and all we can do is try to prepare everybody, so that our clients are pleasantly surprised instead of disappointed. Most of the leads are still coming out of the major markets, though.
It’s a process,” says Kelley. Production businesses investing in Georgia serve not only the growing film and entertainment industry but also help out established local production companies as well. Panavision Cameras, which closed their Georgia facility in 1998 due to a lack of business, has returned, and EUE/Screen Gems has constructed five sound stages with over 150,000 square feet of production space in Southwest Atlanta on the former Lakewood Fairgrounds site. EUE/Screen Gems employs 250 people on their lot with plans to add more employees as needed. “Production equipment is more readily available now, and the latest and greatest that used to only be available in LA and New York is now here,” says Linda Burns. Sheryl Myers, a long-time Atlanta production veteran and currently the Executive Producer at Stateline Films says, “Competition is a good thing for me as a producer because if I’ve got vendors competing, I’m going to get better rates on things I need.” But most importantly, all of the entertainment industry’s growth gives Georgia’s film community something it has lacked in the past, real legitimacy. “As a production company based in Atlanta, we now have more credibility. We’re now located in a production center; we’re not just an outpost.” Says Myers, “The whole level of the game was raised when this (the

Rather than the jaded population of other production hot spots, Georgians are still excited to see a film crew. But, it’s not just a great tax incentive and world-class production support that’s turned Atlanta into a production powerhouse; Atlanta’s film industry has something that’s only on offer in the South. As Sheryl Myers puts it, “There’s a nice, hospitable way that people work in the industry here in Atlanta. Work on Buckhead Atlanta – the six-block, 8-acre, luxury mixed-use development formerly know as Streets of Buckhead – resumed last month after sitting dormant for nearly three years. San Diego-based developer OliverMcMillan said a flurry of activity is happening on the site, including new cranes and Georgia Power burying above-ground power lines along Buckhead Avenue. OliverMcMillan will also begin renovating the former HiFi Buys building and transform it into a construction office for general contractor Balfour Beatty’s and Buckhead Atlanta’s management team. 2012 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival Seeing a movie at the elegant Fox Theatre is a completely different experience than going to today’s multiplex cinemas. The Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival will celebrate films of the past and present all season long beginning this month with three blockbusters: a 70th anniversary screening of Casablanca (June 14), the 40th anniversary of The Godfather (June 15) and a very special event, Sing-aLong Sound of Music (June 24). Other movies coming up this summer include a 25th anniversary screening of The Princess Bride (July 15) and a 40th anniversary screening of Deliverance (July 20). These classics will be interspersed with current films that will be announced soon and special Saturday morning cartoon screenings for kids. summerFest The Virginia-Highland Civic Association presents the 29th annual Virginia Highland Summerfest, June 2-3, which takes place along
tree-lined Virginia Avenue in the heart of the neighborhood. Hours for this year’s festival are 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The festival is free to attend. There will be a juried artist market featuring the work of more than 200 artists including painting, clay, glass, jewelry, photography, printmaking, fiber, wood, metal and mixed media. The Summerfest 5K will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday with 1,000 runners expected to take part. Following the 5K Race, children aged 5 and under will run, waddle or crawl to the finish line of the Tot Trot held in Inman Middle School field at 9 a.m. Registration for the 5K and Tot Trot must be made in advance at active.com. One of the big highlights of the weekend is the 92.9 Dave FM Music Stage, which will feature headline performances by Rusted Root on Saturday and Marc Broussard on Sunday. A lover of art ever since she can recall, Anne Irwin started her career as a calligrapher, but soon morphed into the art of graphic design. Before she knew it, Irwin was designing logos and invitations for various friends and clients. Irwin’s passion for art continued to expand and she soon found herself working as an art agent. She started with one artist and placed her in galleries around the south. With the success of her client, Irwin’s phone continued to ring and soon she represented several artists. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ariel Dorfman’s Speak Truth To Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark will be performed at he Rialto Center for the Arts, Tuesday, June 26, with an all-star cast. The production is part of the groundbreaking festivities for the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Downtown. The play is based on interviews with more than 50 human rights activists from around the world. It premiered at Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C. in September 2000, and broadcast as part of PBS’s The Kennedy Center Presents. Real vs. Reality I am an artist and I’ve been thinking… I admit it. I watch American Idol because of Jennifer Lopez, who is presumably the picture used in the dictionary under beautiful, and to gawk at Steven Tyler because I can’t decide which parts are real and how he could have such a beautiful daughter who seems so normal. The rest of the show is ‘nyeh’ to me with a lot of recycled routines that border on a revival of Up With People stage shows from the 1990’s. And now Howard Stern takes the seat on America’s Got Talent as a judge. And don’t get me started on Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, which is like a freak accident seen in very, very slow motion. There is a clear pattern developing and it’s not pretty. Weird people on TV make you watch. That’s why the Bravo channel exists. My point is that if I watch these shows, I find myself caring less for the struggling artists who are trying to find success and more about the circus. Of course, if any artist friend of mine said that they thought going on television was a good career move I’d slip them some sleepytime tea and ask them to reevaluate their ambitions in the morning, but to each their own. Network execs must be loving the de-evolution of talent on TV, but it makes me apprehensive for America’s interest in the arts. Here in Atlanta we have a few solid art institutions and some others that have not yet capitalized on the circus factor to get attention. Rather than try (hopelessly) to get excited about The Art of Golf, a featured exhibition at the High Museum which is really only fun after drinking, or the Stories in Form: Chair Design at the Museum of Design, which just makes me want to sit down, I thought I’d suggest that artists and art enthusiasts get up and go off the beaten path a bit to discover venues and opportunities that are lively and definitely more real than the “Housewives” will ever be. I’ll try to be careful because I would not want Nene Leakes to come after me since she’s about three feet taller than I am. If you couldn’t get tickets to see Vince Gill or k.d. lang’s concerts at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, don’t worry. You can still find your groove at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center listening to Joe Gransden on June 29 as part of the Jazz on the Lawn series. However you’ve got to investigate this historic venue and the art exhibits and classes there. It’s an old institution but has remained true to its roots and produces fine work. Personally, I like to drop in on the Chastain Park Arts Center because of it’s low key atmosphere, classes and small exhibits that make me comfortable. Since we’re still talking outdoors, I’m planning to brave the heat and slog through Summerfest in Virginia Highland to see some of my favorite artists exhibiting outdoors on June 2-3, then the shady Peachtree Hills Festival of the Arts on June 9-10. The Peachtree Hills show is smaller than Summerfest and close to ADAC, which is Atlanta’s only design center and important to know about. Finally, since my goal is to get June 2-3 you off the beaten path, I’d suggest Virginia Highland Summerfest following the trail to The Goat Farm John Howell Park, Atlanta for their “pop up” event on June Free to attend. When crafters Christy Petterson and Shannon Mulkey met in 2004 at Youngblood Gallery, they had no idea what it would lead to in the future. But after getting to know each other’s style and work, they began to discuss the lack of markets in Atlanta for indie crafters like themselves. “We knew about other, larger craft markets, and I think it was on both of our
radars that we were kind of hoping that there was one in Atlanta, and we realized that we could be the ones to start that,” says Mulkey. They started the Indie Craft Experience (ICE), and it has grown into the biggest indie craft festival in the Southeast. Their next event is the summer ICE show, which will be held June 2-3, at Ambient + Studio. Admission is $5, but this
includes free goodies for those who arrive early. The atmosphere at ICE events is fun and festival-like, with food trucks and craft demonstrations. June’s event will have an “Art Swap,” where you can bring a piece of art that you’re tired of (or never really liked) and swap it out for a new one. Petterson and Mulkey started planning their first ICE event in January 2005, and it was held six months later, in June. Now they host ICE twice a year and have added two new shows. February’s Wedding Day Hooray offers brides-to-be the opportunity to find everything they need for their wedding in one day, from invitations and dresses to table decorations and photographers. The event is designed to make the bride’s job easy and fun and ensure that her wedding is full of those unique, handmade items that will make it truly special. The ICE pop-up holiday boutique is another fun endeavor. In 2011, it popped up at Criminal Records in Little Five Points and lasted for all of December, providing Little Five Points visitors with an extra, hyper-
local option for holiday gifts. Mulkey and Petterson describe the aesthetic of their shows as “unusual” with motifs that aren’t traditionally used in highend crafts and are “a little edgier.” You’re more likely to see typewriters, skulls and crossbones, roller skates and octopuses decorating the crafts than the old-fashioned duck or geese prints. The crafters run their own booths, adding that personal touch of being able to “get the story behind the piece and learn about the artist directly,” Mulkey says. “I think when we originally started that we wanted a venue for our own work. We didn’t totally fit into the Inman Park Festival or the other festivals, so we wanted something that was more of an indiemodern craft festival. But as the show’s grown, we support other businesses, we help other businesses grow and try out products and find an audience,” says Mulkey. Cake Hag makes cakes with southern twist By Pamela Berger sweetpeachblog.com As soon as I read about mother and daughter team, Maggie and Katie Sweeney in Atlanta, who make delicious and innovative cakes, many with a southern twist, I found my way to their shop, Cake Hag. I ordered a piece of their Carolina Carrot Cake filled with incredibly delicious carmelized pineapples. It was, as they say, love at first bite. Maggie and Katie recently moved from their storefront location in downtown Atlanta to a kitchen behind a local church in Grant Park. They no longer have their retail space but you can stop by or call to order a cake. And if you do stop by, I bet they’ll offer you cake scraps of whatever yumminess they’re concocted for the day. In all her cakes, Maggie uses Swiss and Italian buttercream and stays away from hydrogenation. Her favorite is the butter sponge cake with dark chocolate ganache and blood orange sangria marmalade. She is known for her Jameson Irish Whiskey pudding cake but I’m dying to try their brandied peaches cake with honey butter or Katie’s favorite, bourbon chocolate cake with cookie dough filling. Hungry yet? Maggie took a night class on the principles of baking 26 years ago and has been hooked
ever since. Her flavor combinations, that have been perfected over time, are spot on. Maggie loves to come up with a new cake idea sharing, “The real fun comes from creating unusual recipes and combos.” Each week you’ll find something different in their kitchen and as all true chefs will attest, it depends what’s in season and what tastes best at the time. They source as many products as they can from local farmers. Their strawberries and apples come from R & A Orchards in Ellijay, Georgia and all their peaches from Sunny Hill Farms in Gaffney, South Carolina. In the spring, the Cake Hags had the honor of making cakes for a reception to honor the legacy of Dr. Dorothy Irene at Morehouse College. Known most as a civil rights advocate, she fought tirelessly for equality for both African Americans and women. Since Dr. Height came up in a time when women wore hats and gloves, it was common to see her impeccably dressed – from her tailored church suits to her extensive collection of signature hats. It’s hard not to like a sweet peach. You feel lucky when you find one as it immediately satiates and delights. So when I was trying to find the best peach pie for this month’s cover shoot, master baker, Maggie Sweeney of Cake Hag (cakehag.com) was the only one to call. Upon my request, Maggie upped the ante with a Brandied Peach Pie recipe that is incredibly scrumptious and perfectly Southern. The crust is distinctly homemade with depth and a wonderful flaky texture. A touch of brandy added to the sweet peaches surprises and soothes. Maggie suggests using Freestone peaches which are easily found at your local grocery store. Firmer and less juicy, these peaches are excellent for baking. She recommends keeping the dough cold (great tip is to cool your hands in ice before kneading) and not overworking the dough. Less is always more. Maggie also warns against using aluminum pie pans as the heat transfers too quickly and can compromise the overall taste. As Maggie says, “A good glass or ceramic pie pan isn’t expensive. Use one.” Cake Hag is a whiz with pies, but as the name implies, Maggie also makes incredible cakes, such as Carolina Carrot, Red Wine Velvet and Jameson’s Irish Whiskey Pudding Cake. Ingredients: Peach Pie Filling
2 1/2 - 3 pounds ripe peach meat in medium thin slices (off the pit, skin removed – amount needed depends on depth of pie plate – deep dish needs requires more peach) 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup light brown sugar 1/3 cup granulated sugar 3 tablespoons corn starch 1 teaspoon good quality ground cinnamon Zest of 1/2 lemon Juice of small lemon 1/3 cup brandy 1/4 teaspoon kosher or sea salt

2 1/2 cups all natural, unbleached all-purpose flour + flour for rolling 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon kosher or sea salt 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 8 tablespoons unsalted butter in small cubes 4 oz cream cheese in small cubes 2 1/2 teaspoons white vinegar or lemon juice 3 – 6 tablespoons of milk, as needed 350F oven

Instructions
• Chill cubed butter and cream cheese in freezer until butter is hard. • Sift all dry crust ingredients together in medium bowl. • Sift granulated white sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon together (filling ingredients) and set aside. • Begin cutting chilled butter and cream cheese into the dry crust ingredients until the mixture consists of crumbled small, pea-sized crumbs. Alternately, pulse ingredients in a food processor until the same consistency is achieved. • Add vinegar, followed by milk, in tablespoon increments until mixture just begins to come together. • Separate crust mixture into halves – quickly form a rough disk of each halve, working the dough as as little as possible, wrap each disk in plastic wrap and put in freezer to chill. • In a large pan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons unsalted butter. Add peaches, brown sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, and salt and cook until peaches just begin to soften. • Using a whisk, add the sugar/ cornstarch/cinnamon mixture and continue cooking until the liquid begins to come together and bubbles. • Add brandy before removing mixture from heat. Thoroughly mix brandy into peach mixture, remove from heat and set aside or place in fridge to cool. • Using a smoothly floured surface and a lightly floured rolling pin, begin rolling out the larger disk of chilled dough until it reaches an even thickness throughout and about 12” in diameter – at that point fold crust in half and transfer to pie plate, making sure the crust overlaps the plate edges once the crust has been evenly placed. • Roll out the second disk the same way. At this point you can cut strips to lay a lattice top, roll out a full top crust cutting vent holes, or roll out a full top and use a stylized cutter – in all cases making sure to seal the edges of the crusts together and pinch-flute the crust circumference around the pie pan. • Combine 1 egg white with 2 tablespoons of whole milk and lightly brush crust with this mixture using a pastry brush. Then sprinkle crust with granulated or sanding sugar. • Place pie on a sheet pan in the center of the middle rack of the heated oven. The pie will take from 35-45 minutes to bake but begin watching the pie at 20 minutes, in 5 minute increments, to make certain the crust isn’t browning too fast before the pie cooks completely. If the crust is browning too quickly lay a sheet of foil gently over crust until the pie has finished baking.

TIPS The crust does best when it is kept cool and worked the least – use the freezer as needed to chill or re-chill the crust or crust ingredients. Freestone peaches will be easier to remove flesh from the pit, and yield more meat-per-peach. Remove the skins before slicing peaches by blanching the peaches in boiling water for 15-30 seconds and quickly placing them in ice water. Skin comes off beautifully and on a freestone peach, the flesh separates quickly from the pit

Smell each peach butt before buying it. If they don’t smell like peach heaven, even if they feel ripe, they won’t have great flavor. Use the best ingredients you can, from butter to flour to peaches to produce a fantastic peach pie. Freezing your own skinned, sliced peaches, just covered in peach juice, will equal a delicious peach pie in the off-season Pie crust can be fragile and it does sometimes tear. If that happens just quickly patch it without over working the dough. It’s way more important to have a delicious crust then a pretty crust.

Dahl, which is also often spelled dhal,daal and dal, is essentially a thick lentil soup that is often prepared with ghee or clarified butter, but this recipe uses just a little garlic infused olive oil for depth and flavor in place of the ghee. This simple dahl is one of my favorite go-to recipes as it is a vegetarian delight, it is easy and quick to prepare, and my friends and family love it. Serve with flat bread or rice. Serves 4. ~Prep Time: 10 minutes ~Cook Time: 35 minutes ~Total Time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
1 tsp. sesame oil or, alternatively, olive oil 1/2 cup finely chopped white onion 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 tsp. finely chopped fresh ginger 1/2 tsp. ground coriander 1/2 tsp. turmeric 1/2 tsp. ground cumin 4 cups water or vegetable broth 2 cups dried red lentils, rinsed and picked over 1 tsp. tomato paste Cilantro for garnish
Preparation:
1. In a 3-quart stockpot or other mediumsized soup pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the onion, garlic and ginger. Cook, stirring often, until the onions are translucent, about 6 minutes. 2. Stirring constantly, add the water or broth, lentils, spices and salt. Bring to a low boil, then turn down the heat to low, cover and let the soup simmer for about 20 minutes, or until lentils are very tender. 3. Stir in the tomato paste until well combined. Cook several minutes more, or until the soup is desired temperature and consistency, adding more water to the dahl if needed. Serve hot with flatbread or white rice and garnish with a dollop of sour cream and cilantro.

Buckhead Condo Market Once stagnant, inventory is now moving quickly By Kathy Vogeltanz The real estate market is brightening throughout Atlanta, and Buckhead is one of the shining hotspots. In fact, the rise in condominium sales is starting to deplete the current inventory of new properties. Anne Schwall, VP SkyRise Group with Atlanta Fine Homes, said that the first quarter of 2012 has shown the highest number of sales in the last five years. “Since January, we’re in the range of the $20 million sales mark. There’s a definite uptick in properties in the luxury market, anything north of $500,000 to $4 million. It was stagnant for the last four years, but
it’s moving now and showing definite improvement.” She explained that among the condos in the $300,000 range, there has been great velocity in the last 16 months, and communities in that price range are selling out for the first time. Buyers are shifting up to the higher price brackets and sales are improving there too. As an example, Schwall pointed to The Sovereign, where seven condos were sold in the months January through April at an average price point of $1.6 million. That’s the same sales number as the entire year of 2011. The Sovereign (sovereignbuckhead. com) has 49 homes, all featuring top-of-

Bill Murray, Managing Broker at Prudential Georgia Realty Buckhead, had the answer. “Everyone’s doing a deal, and the deals are driving the increase in sales. And while the number of sales is up, the law of supply and demand hasn’t kicked in yet – the price per square foot of Buckhead condos has not increased. Buckhead luxury condos are currently selling for about $195 a square foot, down from $225 a square foot last year.” That’s incredible, Murray added, since the number of sold condos is up 11.5 percent from last year, and the condos under contract is up 54 percent for the same time period; all this takes a big bite out of the available condos in Buckhead. Luxury condos, which used to be in the $800,000 to $900,000 price bracket, are now listing closer to the $500,000 mark. The Buckhead condo market is attracting first-time buyers and empty
nesters, as well as investors, Murray noted. First-time buyers can purchase a condo now, live in it for a few years, and rent it out later as they move up, thus accessing wealth in the real estate market. The Astoria at Aramore (theastoriacondos.com) is also experiencing

a huge increase in traffic and sales, according to Jack Williams of Kairos Development. “Our traffic is from suburban couples looking to sell their home and change lifestyles, people relocating from New York and other northern cities and long time Buckhead/Peachtree Battle residents who want to stay in the Peachtree Battle area with less upkeep. One couple who just closed on a condo had been looking at The Astoria for almost four years and knew this was the right time to buy.” The Astoria balances a small, boutique feel of under 80 homeowners with large floor plans featuring custom finishes. Homeowners enjoy unique homes – no two are the same – and a superb location between Buckhead’s business district and the entertainment venues of Midtown. The gorgeous pool, Jacuzzi and deck offer total privacy while boasting great views of downtown. Sibet Freides, Principal at Idea Associates, listed out other amenities that draw buyers to the Astoria, such as the guest suite, full fitness center, clubroom, full catering kitchen, and an acre of green space, perfect for walking dogs, behind the building. The Astoria at Aramore has just 17 condos available, with prices averaging at $450,000. The homes start at $370,000 and include one penthouse that can be customized to a buyer’s taste. “Sellers and developers understand the change in the market and are becoming comfortable with the new normal in real estate, so they’re willing to accept current
market pricing,” said Bonneau Ansley, one of Atlanta’s top selling agents with Ansley Group/Harry Norman. “As people’s confidence is increasing in real estate, the supply is decreasing, so we’re seeing a 12year low on inventory right now.” Ansley referenced the success of Regents Park at Peachtree Battle (regentsparkga.com). This year, five homes have been sold, leaving only four available out of a total of 23. Prices start at $1,050,000 for a shell, and finished homes range from $1,750,000 to $2 millon. The homes are an incredible bargain, Ansley explained, since the current prices are well below the replacement costs. The original developer had the goal of building the absolute best that Atlanta has to offer in location, architecture and construction, Ansley said. Unfortunately, the only thing off was the timing, with a delivery date in 2008. The next year saw a new owner who dramatically reduced prices. Still, 2010 and 2011 sales were sluggish. Finally, starting in the last part of 2011 and into 2012, there’s been a huge surge in activity and sales. So much of a surge that Karen Rodriguez, Luxury Buckhead Condo Expert/Blogger, Associate Broker/Dorsey Alston Realtors, exclaimed, “Beginning in December of 2011, I and many of my fellow Realtors have been the busiest we have been since before the recession. We joke that we’re selling condos like it’s 2005!” In addition to the bottomed-out

Rental rates are at an all-time high, she noted, and it’s cheaper for qualified buyers to purchase a condo than to rent one. From Friday, June 1 through Sunday, June 12, Modern Atlanta (MA) presents the fifth annual Design is Human, a series of events celebrating international design excellence and creative culture. MA12 features a citywide series of programs that highlights design excellence in many areas of life: architecture, interior design, visual arts and social responsibility. The event kicks off with a tour of selected modern homes in Athens, then comes back to Atlanta for the Architect Studio Crawl on Friday evening, June 1. A series of designer showroom events will be held on June 5, 6, and 7 at Room & Board, FLOR, and Design Within Reach and Hansgrohe Aquademie. The Auburn/Edgewood district will become a design destination with the “Bar Alto” by London-based firm DesignMarketo that features a design-meets-drink and Bread Workshop at Space2 from June 7-10. 765 East Avenue in the Old Fourth Ward was designed as an environmentally friendly home and achieved LEED silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The living level is focused on the exterior pool/koi courtyard and opens onto the deck based on the Japanese engawa. The owners are designers, so they have their studio on the second level. The home can be divided into two areas: the public side (the studio) and the private side (the home), with large pocketing doors.
Shelly Justice and Mike Kohlsdorf’s home in Buckhead is made of steel, engineered wood and concrete. The exterior materials are mainly stained Georgia cypress, Egyptian limestone, and blue fieldstone. All exterior glass is protected from the sun using large overhangs. There are several large decks that overhang the property that borders a lake on the property. The house has a large living-dining-kitchen space at the entry level, which is accessed from a bridge of thick slabs of limestone. The master bedroom suite is also on this level as well as Mike’s home office and aviary.

Atlanta Habitat / AmeriCorps volunteers in Texas Atlanta Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps National and VISTA members traveled to Dallas in May to participate in Habitat for Humanity International’s annual AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon. This year’s build engaged more than 400 AmeriCorps members from 36 states. “Each year, AmeriCorps service members bring high levels of enthusiasm and skill to our organization,” said Larrie Del Martin, president and CEO, Atlanta Habitat. “We applaud our group for taking their insight and energy ‘on the road,’ and we’re especially pleased that this year’s
Build-a-Thon highlighted green building techniques, a particular strength and focus at Atlanta Habitat.” Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps members have performed more than 10 million hours of service, engaged nearly 2 million volunteers and helped serve more than 12,500 families throughout the United States. This four-bedroom, mid-century modern ranch house stands on a wooded block of similar style and vintage homes on the west side of Buckhead. In 2008, the architect and her husband who own the home undertook a renovation project to preserve the modern sense of design while updating some features to accommodate the needs of an active family of four.

This is a fun idea some of us may have seen before but I think it deserves a little attention as it’s an excellent DIY project. Garden Hood in Atlanta
hosted a shoe planting party. First, they collected dozens of donated shoes, then added plants and rocks to create some happy inducing garden decor. I’m a lifelong fan of Converse shoes so it’s fun to see them given new life in this reincarnation. Kacey Cloues of Garden Hood recommends you drill a few holes in the bottom of the shoes for drainage...then just add plants and water. It’s that easy! Kacey found that a few plants that thrive in our shoes are succulents, herbs, coleus and portulacas. This green high heel is such a great way to complement your decor, adding a spruce of color and charm. Thanks for the inspiration Garden Hood.
