I think you might be wondering, what in the world is happening on the cover? Yes, that is a new food truck specializing in serving dogs ice cream and baked treats. When Kim Bohstedt called this summer to say sheís rolling out a new food truck for dogs called Poochsicles and Bark Bites (read more on page 14), I was intrigued. It coincides with our continued coverage on Atlanta’s food truck scene (see page 31) and is a good tie-in with our Cute Pet photo package submitted by readers (see pages 12-13). And, well, it ís also the dog days of summer, so may as well celebrate that, too. Kim is on the cover holding Douglas Broadfoot, while Annie Bencich gets a good grip on her ice cream cup. Some of the photos during the shoot are at left, including big dogs Blackjack Gurley and Thunder Cohen. A big thanks to these good dogs. And, thank you to INtown contributor and good sport Thom Volarath for being our photographer (I owe you dinner). Beyond dogs and ice cream, this issue is packed with information. Pages 21-28 are a roundup of activities, arts and festivals. Page 30 gives a fresh look at back-to-school lunches. Shandra Hill Smith covers the rebounding condo market on page 38. We want to help you get to know the community and are always open to ideas. Please email me, wendy@atlantaintownpaper.com.

IN the Neighborhood FreeDoM riDerS Local firefighters will bike to NYC in memory of 9/11 FEATURES, NEWS & EVENTS
By April McFadden A decade ago, Guy Green and his wife were preparing to leave their New Jersey home when a news bulletin flashed across the television screen. Terrorists had flown airplanes into the World Trade Center towers. Retired from the Air Force, Green went to Manhattan to see if he could help in any way, only to arrive in time to watch the towers collapse. That same morning, Douglas Kearns was working for a plumbing and electrical company when he heard the news on the radio. He would not understand the full scope of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks until he reached home that evening. Green, now a freelance photographer living in Atlanta, and Kearns will mark the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks by embarking on a 16-day cycling tour along with members of the Atlanta Fire Department and departments from across the state. The Freedom Ride will take the cyclists from Atlanta to the site of Ground Zero in New York.
What began as a “coffee table discussion” between Michael Palmeri and his fellow firefighters at Station 21 evolved into a 1,147-mile ride with more than a dozen cyclists committed to the trek. “It’s a great opportunity to remembering those who gave up the most for this country,” Green said. The goal of the Freedom Ride is to pay respects to the first responders who lost their lives at Ground Zero and to show their solidarity with firefighters, public safety and military personnel around the world. The riders are also raising money for the New York City 9/11 fund and the Atlanta Fire Foundation to support what Kerns calls the “brotherhood.” “Once you become a firefighter, you become a part of the brotherhood,” Kearns said. “You know that guy will lay his life on the line just like you.” Training for the grueling journey has brought out more camaraderie among the Freedom Riders. The riders all bike regularly, but they’ve had to ramp up their training to meet such daunting topography
Visit www.freedomride2011.com to make a donation for these firefighters’ ride and to find out more information about the big send-off on August 26. as the 45,000 foot climb on the Blue Ridge Parkway. “I hope we don’t have to save each other’s lives on this trip,” chucked Jonathan Mason from Fire Station 16. Aaron Rents and Terminus 200 have signed on as sponsors and the Freedom Riders will depart from the Terminus 200 building in Buckhead with a big sendoff on Aug. 26. Before they leave, there is
more fundraising to be done. Expect to see firemen with boots in hands at intersections and other locations. To make a donation can do so at freedomride2011.com. Palmeri said other types of donations are welcome, too. Tubes, water, energy drinks and bars are welcome. He also hopes a big crowd will be on hand for the departure on Aug. 26. PLEASE TURN TO PAGE 6

If you haven’t been to The Wren’s Nest lately, now might be the perfect time since executive director Lain Shakespeare is leaving in September (see story on Page 10). The home of author and journalist Joel Chandler Harris, who happens to be Lain’s great-great-great grandfather, is a magical place for kids and adults. Walking up the stone pathway to the Queen Anne-styled house is like stepping back in time. You can envision Harris sitting on the deep front porch composing his Uncle Remus stories. Even in the scorching heat, the temperature drops a few degrees when you come up the steps. I first came to The Wren’s Nest when I was in elementary school. We watched Disney’s Song of the South, clueless about the racial stereotypes it dished up in animation form and a kind old slave singing “Zip-aDee-Doo-Dah,” then we went on field trip to The Wren’s Nest. The only thing I remember about that visit was someone reading us the Tar Baby story and how I enamored I was of the giant stuffed characters of Br’er Rabbit, Br’er Bear and Br’er Fox. Where was the gift shop so I could buy my own to take home? It was comforting to find Br’er Rabbit
and his nemesis still holding court in the parlor when I went to interview Lain for the story is this month’s issue. It was also comforting to realize how much work Lain has done to reclaim Harris’ reputation and legacy as a folklorist. Even more exciting to see is how the African-American community in West End has embraced the house and its legacy. What Harris did so brilliantly was present the Uncle Remus tales in such a way to fly under the radar of the bigots and Jim Crow laws of the era. The Wren’s Nest has been well-preserved and walking into the house is like a time machine straight back to 1884. Hearing Lain compare Br’er Rabbit to rapper Eminem to make the connection with kids and teens will be missed at The Wren’s Nest. Of course, Lain will still be involved with the house as he becomes chairman of the house museum’s board of directors. Head over to West End, have lunch, do some shopping visit nearby Westview Cemetery and explore the Wren’s Nest. It’s one of Intown’s most tangible connections to our past. collin@atlantaintownpaper. w w w. A t l a n t a I N t o w n P a p e r. c o m

Kate Atwood I don’t claim to have psychic powers of any kind, but I certainly Blake Canterbury: know a visionary when I meet one, and I can already foresee Blake Founder and CEO Canterbury having a huge impact on our world. Atlanta is lucky to have of beremedy him launching his Living by Giving dream right in our own backyard. Tell us a little about beremedy. I recently read it was named one of “3 best Twitter usages worldwide” by CNN. beremedy is the simplest way to help other people. It is an organization connecting people who need help with those who want to help, via social media. We feel that most people would help others if they simply knew the needs in their local community. Through applications like Twitter and Facebook, beremedy alerts people when someone in their community needs help. It takes little time for our members to step-up and make a difference. What was the moment that made you decide you wanted to do something to get connected and have impact in our community and around the world? My whole life I have been drawn to help people in need. Then, I realized that we can communicate a message to potentially millions of people at one time through social media. I thought to myself, “what if we leveraged that potential to communicate messages for good to millions of people?” Then I set out to create a sustainable model to do it. What is your wildest, biggest dream for beremedy? In 10 years, describe what you’d like to see beremedy accomplishing? It doesn’t matter if it’s a natural disaster or helping 3 things you can do in a middle school student who needs a pair of shoes, if Atlanta to be a part of someone wants to get involved and help, I want them to beremedy. turn to beremedy. Leaving THe neST Lain Shakespeare to step down as Wren’s Nest director By Collin Kelley Editor Lain Shakespeare’s first day as executive director of The Wren’s Nest was a memorable one. Georgia Power came to turn off the electricity, the house itself was crumbling and mounting debt meant the home where Joel Chandler Harris wrote his Uncle Remus tales was on the verge of being closed. That was five years ago. Since then, Shakespeare, 28, and a small staff have rescued The Wren’s Nest from obscurity and transformed it into one of the most noted house museums in America. Earlier this year, Shakespeare decided it was time to change up his role at the house and will step down as executive director in September. As the great-great-great grandson of the author, Shakespeare had been visiting The Wren’s Nest since he was a child, often made to read Br’er Rabbit stories to visiting relatives. Like many, he saw the 140-yearold Victorian house in West End as a relic of the past and the Uncle Remus stories as promoting racial stereotypes. With a little maturity and research, Shakespeare discovered that the
misconceptions about Harris’ stories were, in part, fostered by the Disney film Song of the South and its depiction of “happy slaves.” With The Wren’s Nest facing closure and at his family’s urging, he stepped in to try and put the museum back on course. To put Harris and his writing in perspective, Shakespeare created a booklet titled “Everything You’ve Heard About Uncle Remus is Wrong.” Critical re-evaluation of Harris’ writing has shown the Uncle Remus tales were cleverly designed to subvert racism and bigotry in the Jim Crow era. “What I discovered was that no one in my family was telling the Harris story,” Shakespeare said. “We were letting others tell it for us and the misinformation was allowed to flourish.” While working to take the tarnish off his ancestor’s legacy, Shakespeare also brought in the same restoration firm that takes care of Buckingham Palace to clean and restore the house to its original 1884 splendor. There was also plenty of fundraising and promoting the home’s cultural significance to Atlanta. Shakespeare brought the house museum into the 21st century, creating a website, regularly updated blog and an hilarious Twitter account with the The Wren’s Nest

tweeting about fixes being made and events held on its grounds. The West End community rallied around the house, its history and ability to bring tourists to the community. The Wren’s Nest is now the cornerstone of the annual West End Tour of Homes. Concerts and literary events at the house have also made it a destination. Even more importantly, school groups once again visit The Wren’s Nest regularly and the boyish and gregarious Shakespeare often leads tours himself bringing Harris’s folklore and the house vividly to life. “What I set out to do five years ago has been done,” Shakespeare said. “We have less debt, dedicated volunteers and great partnerships. The museum is moving in the right direction.” One of the programs Shakespeare is most proud of is the KIPP Scribes Program, a partnership with KIPP STRIVE Academy, the neighborhood charter school. In 2010, The Wren’s Nest brought in professional writers to work with 5th and 6th graders to record an important family story. The result was the book, Don’t Forget the Day, which launched at the Decatur Book Festival.
A second volume, The Whole Fiasco, is set to launch at this year’s book festival over Labor Day weekend. “We’ve totally altered these kids’ relationship with the written word,” Shakespeare said. “They are now published authors. It’s such an exciting thing to witness.” More vindication of Harris and his tales will come in October when the Atlanta Opera premieres Rabbit Tales, an opera for children based on the high jinks of Brer Rabbit. Shakespeare’s last day on the job is Sept. 15 and, at this writing, he’s looking for a job in the nonprofit sector. While he won’t be in charge of the day-to-day operations (“We’re going to finally hire someone who knows what they’re doing!”), Shakespeare will transition to chairman of the board of directors for The Wren’s Nest, which will allow him to dedicate more time to fundraising and preserving the house for future generations. “I’ll still be around,” he laughed. “They’ll have to shoo me away.” For more about The Wren’s Nest and its programs, visit wrensnestonline.com.

Higher Learning
KIPP opens Atlanta Collegiate charter school By Sydia Bell KIPP, Knowledge Is Power Program, recently opened their first high school, Atlanta Collegiate. With a current enrollment of 130 students in the initial 9th grade class, this marks KIPP’s fifth public charter school opening in the metro area. KIPP’s Communication Director Jill Joplin understands the vital role of education and is steadfast about getting children, “all the way to and through college.” Targeting students who need extra attention, KIPP offers mentoring and tutoring programs to students attending high school, but once they reach college as well. Whether they need help selecting courses or finding an internship, KIPP is devoted to fostering individuals, Joplin said. a With approximately 85 percent of students enrolling in college after graduation, the addition of Atlanta Collegiate is sure to make an impact on college success rates in the local community.
KIPP believes that following a structure, which includes focused problem solving, critical thinking, self-directed study and extended school days, offers “more time for learning. School days at KIPP run 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and there is a half day of class every other Saturday, plus two-to-three week summer sessions prior to the start of the academic year. Allowing for a more enriched and wellrounded experience, KIPP also focuses attention on the fine arts offering students dance, band and recreational sport options. In addition to the high school, there are four middle schools – KIPP South Fulton Academy, KIPP WAYS (West Young Atlanta Scholars) Academy, KIPP STRIVE (Success through Rigorous Instruction Virtue & Enrichment) Academy and KIPP Vision Academy – and plans to expand even further. KIPP also plans to open an elementary school. For more information, visit kippmetroatlanta.org.

By Annie Kinnett Nichols My new love is the sound a ping-pong ball makes hitting the table, followed closely by the sound the ball makes when it hits a paddle. This is made even sweeter when it’s my friends and I playing the game. Whack. Pop. Whack. Pop. Love. I have a lot of strange friends. Most of my friends are, shall we say, eclectic. And so it’s probably their fault that I’ve become a ping-pong devotee. I started playing ping-pong at Sister’s Louisa’s Church of the Living Room & Ping Pong Emporium at
the Telephone Factory. I would play while visiting my friend Grant Henry, or stop by after an art opening in the building or when I was taking of Hollis Gillespie’s Champagne & Ping Pong Writing Classes. I look back to those years and realize I was just a neophyte. I didn’t know how to serve correctly, kept the ball in play even when it was clearly dead, cheated, lied – anything to make a point. Clueless. Those days are over. Grant moved his ping-pong table to his own bar – also called Sister Louisa’s but known to the locals as simply Church – changing my destiny forever. I decided to learn the real game of ping-pong, and my husband Tim and his BFF John agreed to teach me. I played every chance I could. One day, I actually beat John. I jumped up and down, ran downstairs and informed everyone of my prowess. Then, I ran across the street to Tim’s studio and announced to everyone in the office my success. It was a very proud moment indeed. When I returned to the table, John quietly informed me I had not actually won because I didn’t have a two-point lead.
Lesson learned. Grrrr. Since that day, I haven’t beaten John, or Tim, or Mohan, or Steven, or Jamie or anyone else, but I still try to make it to every tournament at Church (which are held on Monday nights). I also practice at Victory Sandwich Bar and I got my picture in Creative Loafing’s pingpong article. I’m representing! My secrets are simple: Watch the ball, play people who are better than you (in my case that’s everyone there), wear lip gloss in case you’re gonna be photographed (it happened to me, I wasn’t wearing any, it wasn’t pretty), wear wedge heels or seriously cute boots, an urban/edgy outfit and try not to cuss. No cheating. Always be a good loser until you win, which I’m sure will be some day soon. My goals for my illustrious ping-pong career are to make it to the second round at the Church tournament, then the next round, then one day beat Grant. He’s promised me $1,000 if I can beat him and
I will post the picture on Atlanta INtown’s website of me holding the check up after crushing him like a gnat. Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room and Ping Pong Emporium is at 466 Edgewood Ave. (corner of Boulevard). For more, find the bar on Facebook.

ACHIEVE Atlanta Inaugural Race
18 student athletes train for triathalon at Westminster Scene & Heard is usually an album of snap shots from across town. But, when we heard about 18 rising sixth graders training for a triathalon, we proudly turned the focus in their direction. The Odyssey Triathalon took place on July 15 at the Westminster School campus, featuring a 50m pool, wooded trails and a stadium with a 400m track. The Odyssey Program partnered with ACHEIVE Kids to bring this event to Atlanta.
The athletes pictured on this page learned about nutrition and plowed through miles of drills to prepare this summer for race day. “Luckily we have access to all of Westminster facilities … two hours a day Monday through Friday,” said head coach Mari Fridenmaker. Training and education was facilitated by five volunteers and four coaches, including Mari Fridenmaker, Westminster alumna Katie Thorne, personal trainer
Marcelo Vazquez and Morehouse graduate Lowell Lea.“We’ve had a good team of coaches,” said Mari. Volunteer Sherry Wren, pictured bottom right, explained that this is an opportunity for the kids to learn something that they otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance to try. “These kids have been determined, focused and committed to do it,” she said. For information, achievekidstri.org

Going for Bobsled Gold A gymnast all her life, Megan Hill extended her athletic career by transitioning to track and field while at Auburn University. The next logical step for this master’s degree holder in health promotion was to take up bobsledding, test fate going 80 miles per hour in a 350 pound sled, make the U.S. National Team and prepare for a run at Olympic gold. Huh? If not for the American flag in the background of her picture I’d think I was getting the runaround. Last I checked there wasn’t a Bobsled Little League and if they had a bobsled team at my high school then I definitely missed the tryouts. How does a girl from Woodstock get into bobsledding? I heard about it from one of my track coaches at Auburn. The U.S. Bobsled Team had recruiting events every summer all over the country. I went to one last summer in Orlando and that is how it all started. What kind of training regimen do you keep? I have to train like a sprinter and an Olympic weightlifter. I am working with Steve Putman at B.L.A.S.T. Training Institute in Suwanee for my running and sprint mechanics and I’m working with John Coffee at Coffee’s Gym in Marietta for weightlifting. I work out six days a week, with Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays being two-a-days. I get a little fatigued just thinking about that commute. Tell me about the sled itself. My minivan has automatic sliding doors, a DVD player and about 17 cup holders. Does your sled have any features like that? The sled itself is just like your minivan... just take away the sliding doors, the DVD player, the 17 cup holders, the seat belts, the air bags, the windshield, the radio, the heating and air conditioning, the engine, the roof, and swap the tires for steel blades. There is no luxury to a bobsled, however, it is very aerodynamic and can break any speed limit in Georgia!

How about a nice, cushy seat? The seats are not cushy at all, but we will duct tape padding on the inside of the sled, especially for practice. Also, I wear lots of padding on my body when I slide. Special thanks to McDavid USA’s HexPad technology (mcdavidusa.com).
strategizing about the race or recapping last night’s episode of True Blood? No we don’t talk, although, there is a lot of praying that goes on when we are in the sled. In just one year you went from brakeman to pilot and from the little I understand, that means you are the one driving that bus. Can you explain a little about the different positions? In women’s bobsled there is only the two-man bobsled, unlike the men who have both the four-man and two-man, so there are only two positions – the brakeman and the pilot. The brakeman pushes the sled from behind and then hops in, goes for the ride, and then pulls the brakes at the bottom. The pilot pushes from the side and then hops in and steers the sled down the track. I competed my first season as a brakeman. When the season was over I went to “driving school” up in Lake Placid. I enjoyed driving so much that I have decided to switch positions and compete as a pilot for the 2011-2012 season. That’s got to be the biggest endorsement for driving school of all time. Does it get embarrassing that every time you walk into a supermarket everyone starts chanting “U-S-A! U-S-A!”? I have yet to experience that, but will be honored when that becomes true. The Thinking Artist
A Look Back
Patrick Dennis
Ann Taylor Boutwell
Personal Experience I am an artist and I’ve been thinking… You know how when it gets really hot outside and you cringe at the prospect of leaving the AC behind to venture outdoors even if it’s going the few steps from your car to a restaurant? I think it’s the same frame of mind that my ex-wife had when it came to leaving the house. She swore that she could not walk in flat shoes and that her feet were molded to heels, insisting on wearing the most impossible stilettos at all times. Her version of exercise was to totter from the car to a building and finding a seat. Let me be generous in saying that her peripheral vision was limited. And that’s what happens to art lovers when it’s hot. The Virginia Highland Summerfest, one of my favorite local art shows was big, and hot. There were some terrific artists there doing their best to engage visitors, but it was hard for people to stay long and see it all because their peripheral vision was limited due to the heat. As I was standing under a tree, I noticed a young man walking with determination to his car carrying a new painting he purchased. I commented that I recognized the piece done by Atlanta artist Jim Afroukhteh and offered my congratulations. He stopped for a moment to say that he bought it because the subject of a lone rowboat on the water with a dramatic sky made him feel cool and calm and he wanted that feeling in his home. So I got to thinking, perhaps if an artist creates a personal experience for the collector, it can expand and stimulate their field of vision. This does not apply to my ex- wife, however, because she was quite happy to sit quietly until a martini arrived, and only then was her peripheral interest stimulated. There are a great many art venues in the metro Atlanta area from the big daddy High Museum to local, independent galleries and some ambitious investors in Atlanta’s Westside. They are all geared to stimulate the senses. But do they make a personal connection? The groundbreaking of the Westside Cultural Arts Center on May 21 included local celeb Fay Gold, who will incorporate a permanent gallery in the 12,500 square foot space at 997 Brady Ave. when it opens this fall. “We want to push into new territories and blur the distinction between art and life,” says Nicholas Miller, the marketing and media liaison for the Center. “Art is not just for art’s sake but for people to influence people. That is the vision for the Westside Cultural Arts Center.”
28 INtown | August 2011
This ambitious vision speaks volumes to the need for artists to connect with people in a personal way. It’s a way to effect positive change through art and enhance our social fabric. I stumbled upon this quote from ARTnews, 2009: “When Marc Chagall came from Paris to Tel Aviv to help open the city’s first art museum in 1931, he compared art to a golden thread running through society’s fabric and stressed that if it were not woven from the beginning, it could not be added later.” Atlanta’s artistic fabric is more like a patchwork quilt woven with many personal stories. Artists and art lovers have the unique opportunity to make a personal connection here since we are a “young” arts community. One can actually meet the artist and hear their story. Me? I’m making house calls to complete a painting commissioned by a very nice family for their beach house. We talk about the ocean and drink a lot of iced tea. They chose me because they know I paint the ocean and sky they love. And I am glad to swap stories and create the finished piece they will live with. You’ve got lots of choices to get up close and personal with art this summer. Don’t let the heat slow you down! Through Aug. 14: High Museum of Art collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York includes 150 works of furniture, glass, ceramics, lighting, etc. by 120 artists. Not to be missed. high.org Aug. 19 – 21: The Slotin Folk Art Auction is the world’s largest folk art show and sale. Self-taught, outsider and folk artists, and galleries representing unique artistic voices at the North Atlanta Trade Center in Norcross. There is a $7 fee for admission. I guarantee you will be stimulated, if not soothed by what you see. slotinfolkart.com Aug. 20 – 21: The Piedmont Park Summer Arts & Crafts Festival will bring back “the old days” when art festivals celebrated local talent. piedmontparkartsfestival.com Patrick Dennis is an artist, gallery owner and President of the Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces. Aug. 1, 1864: Carrie Mabry Berry began keeping a diary during the siege, occupation and burning of Atlanta during the Civil War. On Aug. 3, 1864, she wrote: “this [sic] was my birthday. I was ten years old, But [sic] I did not have a cake times were too hard so I celebrated with ironing. I hope by my next birthday we will have peace in our land so that I can have a nice dinner.” In 1875, she married William Macon Crumley, president of Crumley, Sharp, Hardware Company. When she died in 1921 the family was living in Ansley Park. Her gravesite is in Oakland Cemetery. The original handwritten diary and be found in the Carrie Berry Collection at the Atlanta History Center’s Kenan Research Library. Aug. 5, 1928: William Alexander Scott II, 26, established the Atlanta Daily World, the first successful AfricanAmerican continuing daily newspaper in the United States. The paper continues to publish today. Aug. 9, 1904: Atlanta building inspector Frank A. Pittman issued a permit to the Candler Investment Company for a new office structure at the triangular corner of Peachtree, Houston (John Wesley Dobbs Avenue) and Pryor (Park Place). The American Bridge Company of Pittsburg, Pa. constructed the 17-story skyscraper, designed by architect George Murphy. The building opened in February, 1906 with crowds admiring the handsome white marble structure and bank vaults. From 1906 to 1923 the Coca-Cola occupied the top two floors. The Chandler Building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in August, 1977. August 18, 1917: At the stroke of midnight, the Southern Bell Telephone Company officially opened the Hemlock Exchange building, located on the southwest corner of Crescent Avenue and Tenth Street. The building consisted of a basement and two stories, designed by architect P. Thornton Marye. Established at cost of $250,000, the new plant was the sixth unit in the city’s extensive telephone system with the latest technology. Demolished in 1988, the reconfigured site is now part of the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank in Midtown. Aug. 22, 1889: Joel Hurt’s first electric streetcar made a successful run from downtown Atlanta at Pryor Street and Edgewood Avenue to Inman Park in 15 minutes. The Atlanta & Edgewood Street Car Company purchased the motorcars from the Lewis & Fowler Manufacturing Co. of Brooklyn, NY. Have information about Atlanta history to share with Ann Boutwell? News you can Eat EATING OUT | EATING IN | FOOD NEWS | WINE
lUnCheS that PaCk a (fUn) healthY PUnCh By Dr. Stephanie Walsh, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta With approximately 180 days in a school year, coming up with enticing lunches can be hard, especially as the year goes on. If you have a picky eater, your job is even harder. From adding a love note to their lunchbox to grocery shopping tips, below are some ways to keep your sandwich-swapping children happier (and healthier) than ever. Take your child to the grocery store Involve children in the selection and preparation of foods. Teach them to make healthy choices by providing opportunities to select foods based on colors and variety. Fill up your cart by going around the outside of the store. The inside aisles are typically home to less healthy items. Make a rainbow Have a color contest to see if your child can eat every color in the rainbow in his or her lunches that week. Again, take your child shopping to pick out the colors. There’s more to life than a sandwich Replace the standard sandwich with something similar but more exciting like a wrap or pita-pocket bread. Wrap lunch meat around a veggie or cheese. You can even make a “sandwich on a stick” where you layer cubes of cheese, turkey, ham, or chicken breast, and veggies such as cherry tomatoes and cucumbers.
Love your lunchbox Your child will look forward to packing his or her lunch if they love their lunchbox. For example, children love the compartments that a bento lunch box offers. This also helps with portion control and illustrates the different colors and that make up a healthy lunch. Another great way to bring a smile to their face at lunch is to put love notes in your child’s lunch box. Tell them how much you love them and how proud you are of them. Don’t forget dessert Make sure your child gets to choose a dessert to enjoy as part of lunch, such as a pudding cup or a slice of homemade quick bread such as banana, zucchini, or carrot. Stephanie Walsh, M.D., is medical director for wellness at Chidlren’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

the neW BroWn Bag By Sydia Bell When thinking about bag lunches, memories of the school cafeteria instantly come to mind. Whether it was in a bag or a lunchbox emblazoned with a superhero, usually what was inside was not very inspiring: a mushy peanut butter and jelly sandwich accompanied by a warm drink and a “dessert” cake or cookie that your classmates offered to take off your hands for something even less appetizing. A child’s lunch plays a vital role in meeting the daily nutritional standards, but finding healthy, cost effective meal that kids will actually enjoy can be a challenge. The truth is, packing a “healthy” and delicious lunch comes down to simple
substitutions and a little preparation. What should go into a healthy bag lunch? Carbohydrates are not evil; you just have to remember to serve the right ones in moderation. When building a sandwich reach for whole-grain breads, pitas and wraps that are full of fiber rather than white bread. Or, you could forgo the entire sandwich and create a dish using brown rice, whole-wheat or buckwheat noodles. Most kids may not immediately take to whole-wheat pasta, so try and mix-it up with a multi-grain or semolina pasta and gradually make the full transition to whole-wheat. For protein, stick with leans meats such as chicken, fish, or turkey. Jessica Seinfeld’s recipe for chicken nuggets – a kid favorite – incorporates a choice of broccoli, spinach, sweet potato or beets. Deceptively delicious! Another great source of protein are nuts. Dr. Jenya Hampton, a local natural health professional specializing in raw food, suggests a nut tuna pate as a side dish. Of course, kids need tons of fruits and vegetables, so try and incorporate them into the bag lunch. Carrots with some dip are great, but consider kale, leeks, olives or rhubarb. You could even make your own dipping sauce. The end of the meal snack is what all kids really want and you can still pack nutrients into them, just don’t let them know. Instead of a sugar-filled candy bar try an applesauce muffin or chocolate pudding made with avocado served over fresh fruit. Street Eats Convergence Weekly Howell Mill Food Park brings food trucks together By Sydia Bell A few months ago, my Twitter timeline was buzzing with news of the first Street Food Thursday at the Woodruff Art Center. Since I wasn’t in walking distance but still wanted to sample the good eats from the trucks, I drove down Peachtree Street in search of a parking spot. By the time I got to the trucks, there seemed to be thousands of people in line. In 30 minutes, most of the trucks announced they were out of food. I decided, with my unappeased appetite, that food truck rallies were not for me. Street Food Thursday is still happening, with more trucks than ever and plenty of food for the lines of hungry people, but waiting in the heat is not my idea of a good way to spend a lunch hour. So, when Atlanta INtown asked me to go on another food truck adventure let’s just say I was a little apprehensive. I decided to invite a friend, because if I had to do this, I wasn’t going to suffer alone. Our destination? Somewhere behind the Willy’s on Howell Mill Road. To which my friend responded, “Behind Willy’s?” Every Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. a gravel lot behind Willy’s becomes the Howell Mill Food Park. You can find a good majority of the city’s food trucks and carts here, including King of Pops, The Tamale Queens, Westside Creamery and The Good Food Truck. I knew immediately, this wasn’t going to be your usual food truck convergence. As we drove behind Willy’s, a friendly police officer was directing cars to parking. And since there were more trucks, that meant the lines were shorter. There were even picnic benches set up, so we didn’t feel like we had to “eat and run.” Some people sat on the grass to enjoy the food, while many brought blankets to make a picnic. And not a single truck ran out of food. We started with tamales, then it was onto the tofu tacos and, finally, the flavor combustion of maple cinnamon ice cream for me and a coconut key lime sorbet for my

Go Green
YOUR GUIDE FOR AN ECO-FRIENDLY LIFESTYLE
arChiteCtS doCUMent BUilding hoMe online By Collin Kelley Editor
Cara B. Cummins and Jose E. Tavel
Building a new house can be stressful, so imagine documenting all the problems, weather delays and permitting issues in a blog for the world to see and read. Architects Jose E. Tavel and Cara B. Cummins, who own TaC Studios, are doing just that as they build an environmentally friendly home in the Old 4th Ward. They started the blog, LEED 4 Ward (leed4ward.com), before building even began. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a green building certification system that measures energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality and more. Tavel and Cummins are going for platinum status, the highest and most difficult designation to attain. In early July, Alaska Avenue echoed with the sound of drilling machines boring the home’s geothermal wells. The machines drill 200 to 250 feet down hitting water and granite along the way. Using the Earth’s natural heating, the homeowners hope to cut a projected $350 per month energy bill to about $40. The house was wrapped in Zip panels, an environmentally friendly building material that waterproofs and insulates, and comes factory-read for quick installation. High performance windows, foam insulation, Energy Star rated fixtures and appliances will also go toward meeting LEED standards. The house will be clad in metal panels that are not only stylish, but will never need painting. Tavel and Cummins have designed green homes and buildings for their clients, but building one themselves offered an opportunity to document the process so others can see what building a LEED certified home entails. The couple decided to build the house after selling their home around the corner to a client who fell in love with the modern design. “Our client wanted something similar to our home and after he offered to buy it, we decided to go for it,” Cummins said. “We had purchased the other lot and decided it was a great opportunity to build a new home and studio.” The lot is located along the BeltLine and a short walk from Highland Avenue and all its shops and restaurants. “We love the Old 4th Ward, so we definitely wanted to stay in the neighborhood,” Cummins said. Just as construction was getting under way in January, the massive snow and ice storm hit Atlanta. The run of unpredictable weather meant the loss of 23 days in the building process by March. Spring and summer storms had Taval and Cummins keeping fingers crossed that trees wouldn’t damage the under-construction home. Even while the house is still under construction, it’s clear the house was designed with light in mind. Walls of windows provide startling amounts of natural light and seamlessly connect the outdoor living spaces. The upstairs studio suite will feature a large workspace, storage and conference room. The studio will be sectioned off from the bedrooms with pocket doors. There’s also a rooftop deck with impressive views of the neighborhood. The house should be finished in September and will certainly be a gem for the neighborhood. With its hidden gardens, Koi pond, lap pool, porches and welcoming front façade, Taval and Cummins are looking forward to living and working in the house. w w w. Give Green at Work with EarthShare of Georgia By Elizabeth Patrick Georgia may be the most important environmental non-profit that no one talks about! EarthShare of Georgia is working for the day when our air, land and water are clean, abundant and healthy. With many companies looking for ways to make their businesses more sustainable and engage their employees, starting an ESGA employee giving campaign provides an easy way for employees to support more than 60 environmental and conservation charities dedicated to conserving and protecting our air, land and water. EarthShare of Georgia member groups work hard every day to address environmental health risks, restore natural habitats, protect wildlife, reduce global warming, and much more. ESGA annually certifies that member groups operate within the highest ethical and professional standards. This insures that companies and their employees can donate with confidence to our many incredible environmental member organizations. “EarthShare of Georgia is much more than a fiscal agent for our member groups,” said Madeline Reamy, Executive Director of EarthShare of Georgia, “Our workplace campaign partnerships in both the public and private sector provide opportunities for employees to learn more about the environment, volunteer and have a choice in giving to the nonprofits they care about.” EarthShare of Georgia was founded in 1993 by its member groups as the Environmental Fund for Georgia to represent them in employee giving campaigns, and to provide an efficient and secure way to manage their donations. In 2001, the Environmental Fund for Georgia officially affiliated with EarthShare, the national employee giving program, to become part of a network representing more than 400 leading environmental groups working locally, nationally and internationally. It brought with it the fundraising power of the EarthShare
network, which has raised more than $150 million for the environment. ESGA partners with more than 70 employers including federal, state and local governments, Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, and colleges and universities. EarthShare of Georgia has raised more than $4 million for our environmental member groups through employee giving campaigns. Employees can also connect with EarthShare of Georgia’s member groups by volunteering for river clean-ups, establishing parks and community gardens and planting trees. This fosters team-building and enables employees to work together for a common purpose. It also demonstrates a commitment to improving their health and the health of the planet. “Park Pride thrives on the symbiotic relationship it has with EarthShare of Georgia. As a member group we are benefiting financially from workplace giving campaigns, provided corporate connections at Earth Day events and offered outreach through neighborhood networking from Corporate Green Day Challenge volunteer projects,” said member group representative & Park Pride Director of Development & Communications Abigail Paine. EarthShare of Georgia organizes three major annual Earth Day events that help connect business and environmental partners and increases environmental awareness. “At Cox Enterprises, partnering with EarthShare of Georgia on their Earth Day events gives us the largest reach for our sponsorship dollars,” said Jami Buck-Vance, ESGA Board Chair and Senior Manager of Corporate Responsibility, Cox Enterprises, Inc., In addition to giving through our workplace campaign, the EarthShare of Georgia Leadership Breakfast, the Earth Day Party and Corporate Green Day Challenge offer our employees several ways to demonstrate their support of local environmental groups. It’s time to go back to school, but our kids shouldn’t be the only one gearing up to learn something new. This school year, make it a point to school yourself on the current issues that affect your health and our planet. The following three documentaries have impacted me to want to learn more and do more for future generations. Vanishing of the Bees Hailed as “the most important documentary since An Inconvenient Truth,” this documentary takes an in depth look at our rapidly declining bee population. Did you know that the honeybee is responsible for one out of every three bites of food on your dinner plate? Honeybees are essential to our food supply, pollinating over 80 percent of our flowering crops (worth about $15 billion), including apples, broccoli and alfalfa, which is an important dietary staple for cattle. Our disappearing honeybee is an indicator of environmentally quality, so when they are dying it means something is wrong. Vanishing of the Bees dives into issues surrounding Colony Collapse Disorder, examines the EPA’s involvement and gives you ways to help combat the problem. vanishingofthebees.com Forks Over Knives An estimated 6,700 Georgians die each year (10 percent of all deaths) as a result of obesity related health issues like heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes. Across the United States, we are spending $75 to $100 billion a year to fight these weight-related issues. Forks Over Knives examines the theory that these diseases can be reversed – and even eliminated – by eating a diet void of animal-based and processed foods. The film follows two top doctors and researchers across the globe as they prove that it does matter what you eat and by eating the right foods you can combat serious illness. forksoverknives.com Bag It Asking the question “is your life too plastic,” Bag It explores America’s dependence on single-use plastic and documents its pressures on our planet. Designed to be disposable, plastic actually never really goes away; it clogs storm drains, accumulates in our rivers and streams, and worst of all makes it into our oceans. The filmmakers make a compelling case against single-use plastic, like grocery bags and straws, and inspire us to make plastic alternative changes in our own lives. bagitmovie.com For more healthy living tips, visit lauraseydel.com.

Reviving Midtown Mile
New apartments, retail and restaurants signal jumpstart of project By Collin Kelley Editor Five years ago, the Midtown Mile was set to be Atlanta’s answer to Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and New York’s Madison Avenue. The stretch of Peachtree Street from 15th Street to North Avenue was going to be a tree-line boulevard filled with luxury apartments, hotels, restaurants, one million square feet of retail space and a streetcar to ferry residents and visitors. Then the economic meltdown began and the rapid construction that had been taking place in Midtown ground to a halt. The planned streetcar line was removed from the city’s short list of transportation priorities. Top Right: 77 12th Street will After more than two years of recession feature 300 apartments, while and the bottoming out of the real estate SkyHouse (below) will have 320. market, the Midtown Mile is showing signs Bottom Left: Sketches of the of life once again. Midtown Mile from 2005, before Daniel Corp and Selig Enterprises the economic crash. announced construction of 77 12th Street, th a 22-story apartment building at 12 and Crescent with 300 units and 20,000 square feet of street level retail. Construction is set to begin this fall, and the developers also have plans for a hotel and office space as part of the 12th & Midtown project. And although not on the Midtown Mile, Novare Group has announced it will build SkyHouse, a 23-story building with 320 luxury apartments. It will be quick walk to the Mile and its amenities. The Midtown Alliance’s new CEO, Kevin Green, said the economy slowed the pace of new development and there is still plenty of catching up to do with job growth, but Midtown is positioned to bounce back faster than other parts of the city. “The tide is slowly coming back in and Midtown will come back faster because we have available housing, job options, urban amenities and transportation,” Green said. Green said there is a growing segment of the population who want to live in the city and bee able to walk to work, shops and restaurants. “They want to be here instead of getting here,” he said. Since the recession, there has been more discussion about building a denser city core and Green agrees that more highrise apartments are needed. “It’s become an attractive option for many,” he said. “It’s great to see Daniel, Selig and Novare are recognizing the need.” As INtown reported last month and again on page 38, condo sales are on the upswing again, but bringing in new retail to the Midtown Mile will be a different challenge. Before the recession, there were rumors that Apple was interested in building a flagship store on the Mile along with other high-end national retailers. While those stores have never come to fruition, smaller shops and restaurants – including Ri Ra Irish Pub and the soon to open STK – have made their home on the Mile. Modern home furnishing store CB2 opened a 14,000 square foot retail store at 1080 Peachtree. Green said new retailers will be coming to the Mile and announcements will be made soon. In the meantime, Green said the Midtown Alliance is working on projects like new unified signage to direct visitors to parking spaces and producing “pop up shopping” events to help existing retailers. On Sept. 8 -11 will see the Vogue Fashion Night Out on the Mile with apparel and jewelry. The popular Holiday Pop Up Shops will also return. The Street Food Thursday event, which brings the city’s food trucks to the park at 15th Street, draws hundreds every week. Green, who had only been on the job a week when this interview was conducted, said he left his post as executive director at the Clean Air Campaign because of the amazing opportunity to help Midtown grow. “I’m looking out my window right now and I can already see the efforts that have been achieved and there is much more to come,” Green said.

My kneejerk response was social network exhaustion mixed with aversion and a glimpse of living in the United States of Google by 2012. Over the past couple of years, I’ve been working hard to curate my Facebook persona, map my travels on Foursquare, build my Twitterverse, hobnob on LinkedIn, Stubleupon the cool spots and really digg into the whole socialsphere. But. It’s Google. And they are smart at what they do (which is like, everything). Plus, invitation only. I had to get into that fenced off area where all the techno hipsters were hanging out. So I begged one to invite me. And she did. At first glance Google+ feels a lot like Facebook. But then you start noodling about. Which is much more fun once you locate some friends. It’s then you realize one of the defining differences from Facebook: the Circles feature. These are essentially small groups you create based on how you know the people in them. Since you can sort and make any sort of grouping you want, w w w. A t l a n t a I N t o w n P a p e r. c o m
as Google points out, you “put your friends from Saturday night in one circle, your parents in another, and your boss in a circle by himself - just like real life.” Hey, Google’s even good at funny! In my limited amount of time playing with Google+, I find myself liking it more and more. It feels more private and personalized, like the conversational value is better. Rather than feeling like you’re reading a personal broadcast (Facebook) or a newswire (Twitter), Circles have a community vibe. It’s something I probably knew was missing in the other platforms but couldn’t define. So… plus! There are other interesting features: Hangouts, where you can video chat with up to 10 people on a whim; Sparks, which let you follow the buzz on topics of interest; and Huddles, the magic functionality of group chat that no one’s managed to perfect yet (although katango.com is pretty good for Facebook). More to try! And more to come. Are you on Google+? What have your experiences been like? Feel free to Tweet me @brigflood (yes, I get the irony of that). Top Sellers Condo living sees great gains in 2011
The Brookwood
GALLERY RESIDENCES
Shandra Hill Smith Young professionals, baby boomers and families looking to downsize – though not necessarily on the high-end amenities they’ve come to appreciate – have turned to condominium living, and at rapid rates in some cases. According to the Atlanta Market Overview for First Quarter 2011, a market insights report by The Marketing Directors, 10 metro Atlanta communities are top sellers. They include Serrano, The Brookwood, Paramount, 1010 Midtown, The Atlantic, Luxe, Viewpoint, Stacks II, Madison Square and Horizon. The Marketing Directors (themarketingdirectorsinc. com) provided exclusive sales and marketing for six of those: Serrano, The Brookwood, Paramount, The Atlantic, Luxe and Horizon. The report shows that the top 10 accounted for more than 71 percent of total net sales in the quarter. Location and amenities are among the reasons the properties landed on the list. Here’s a closer look at some of these and other top sellers.
Serrano If you’re looking for an example of a fast-selling property, Serrano fits the bill. In its first five months of sales, 77 of the 150 condos were sold. A five-story, 150-unit luxury condominium community in Sandy Springs, Serrano is convenient to Perimeter Mall and other shopping, as well as dining and entertainment venues. Serrano offers one- , two- and three-bedroom units with 13 floor-plan designs. One-bedroom condominiums start in the $120s, with two bedrooms priced from the $130s and three bedrooms from the $160s. The units include granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, crown molding, hardwood flooring in living areas, glass-enclosed showers and more. Other amenities at Serrano – owned by ST Residential – include a courtyard with swimming pool, outdoor grill, fireplace and clubroom with kitchen. For those in the market, the seller is paying two percent in closing costs during the month of August. serrano-atlanta.com
In the heart of the historic Brookwood neighborhood, The Brookwood is a 219-unit, mixed-use community. Two- and three-bedroom condominiums, starting in the $240s, range from 1,252 to 2,574 square feet and include features such as 10-foot ceilings (11 in certain residences); floor-to-ceiling windows providing natural light; wide-plank hardwood floors; natural wood cabinetry; Viking stainless steel appliances; and soaking tubs and separate showers. “For those who don’t want the upkeep of a home, but want all of the designer finishes, this is the place,” says John Huckaby, senior vice president, ST Residential, which owns The Brookwood, Serrano, Luxe and The Atlantic. “The Brookwood is one of Atlanta’s only LEED-certified condominiums, so it appeals to eco-conscious buyers as well.” Among the property’s amenities are a junior Olympic saline pool, fitness center with yoga room, catering kitchen, coffee lounge and dog walk area. For additional costs, personal training and in-home chef services are available. Current specials include three percent in buyer incentives for contracts written by the end of August. thebrookwood.net
A library, an art gallery and pet sitting scheduling? They’re all part of the community at Gallery Residences, where only 26 of 203 homes remained in late July. Located on Peachtree Road, Gallery Residences includes two bedrooms from the mid $300s and three bedrooms from the low $600s. Features include open living areas with hardwood floors, 10- and 11-foot ceilings, oversized walk-in closets and limestone flooring in master bath areas. A 24-hour concierge service includes dry cleaning delivery and scheduling of mobile car wash, housekeeping services and golf tee-times. The art gallery adjoining the lobby features an extensive collection of original works. Rotating exhibits – of paintings and sculptures from four prominent Atlanta galleries – adorn the space. In the library curl up by the fire with a good read and take advantage of the catering kitchen nearby. Financing is available to include FHA and Fannie Mae approval. gallerybuckhead.com.
1010 Midtown Roughly 45 percent of the 426 residences at 1010 Midtown, in the heart of midtown Atlanta, had sold by late July. Steps from Piedmont Park, the High Museum of Art and both the Fox Theatre and Alliance Theatre, “this is where Atlanta’s Midtown Mile defines itself with flagship retail, signature residences, luxury hotels and elegant office towers,” says Leslie Williamson, executive vice president, marketing for Coldwell Banker NRT Development Advisors. “According to SMARTNUMBERS, 1010 Midtown is the number-one selling condo in Atlanta based on salesdollar volume for 2011.” The 35-story, high-rise condominium at 1080 Peachtree St. features a rooftop deck with pool and cabanas, a state-of-the-art fitness center and more. Residence features include garden tubs, 10-foot ceilings, granite countertops and wood cabinets. 1010midtown.com. please turn to page 40

One of Atlanta’s most iconic buildings, the Equitable Building, has been purchased for $19 million by Miami-based America’s Capital Partners. Located in Downtown at the corner of Peachtree and Luckie Street, the building will be re-branded 100 Peachtree. Opened in 1968, the 622,000 square foot building will undergo a $20 million renovation to make it state-of-the-art and energy efficient. More than 90 percent of the homes at LUXE, the 22-story boutique-style Midtown condominium tower, have been sold with only 10 homes remaining for sale. LUXE is one of six condominium communities launched by ST Residential last year. When completed in 2008, LUXE was the first high-rise to be built on Piedmont Park in over 20 years. Onebedroom homes are priced from $259,900, two bedrooms from $409,900, and unique terrace homes from $729,900. luxemidtown.com.
Hundreds cheered at the recent Dancing Stars of Atlanta gala as former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin won the Judge’s Choice Award for her dramatic Argentine Tango dance and Jenny Pruitt, CEO of Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty, captured the People’s Choice Award for personally raising more than $51,000 for research and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The event, held at Loews Atlanta Hotel in Midtown, raised more than $226,000.

The plan identified the intersection of Vine and Magnolia as ideal for a mix of retail and residential redevelopment. The community has already built a new park nearby and targeted several aging structures for demolition. Already completed is Vine City Plaza, a 4,400-square-foot stand-alone retail structure. vinecity.net Fifth Street Management has named Ken Manson as president of the firm located in Midtown Atlanta. Manson brings more than 36 years of executive management and leasing experience. Prior to joining Fifth Street, Manson was employed as vice president and director of property management services with Grubb & Ellis. gofifthstreet.com Harry Norman, Realtors has introduced a new online real estate tool, Market Tracker, a free email report outlining residential real estate trends in and around metro Atlanta. “Every sales associate will be able to provide clients, customers and potential buyers exclusive access to local market conditions, an invaluable resource to all parties involved in the real estate transaction,” said Dan Parmer, President and CEO of Harry Norman, Realtors. KNOCK ON WOOD Kirkwood designer creates sustainable outdoor furniture
Before & After Hawthorn Inc. Design & Construction worked on this project in the Castlewood neighborhood. Hawthorn co-owner Steve Prittie had this to say about the renovation: “The homeowners really wanted a two-car garage and their idea was to take the existing carport and enclose the area and convert it to a family room space open to the kitchen. We accomplished this, as well as re-working the laundry room into an ‘owners’ entry’ with a mudroom separate from the laundry and a half bath off the new family BEFORE room. The exterior renovation included changing the front entry to repeat the arches above the new garage doors. And the driveway was made more graceful by moving the curb cut to the right of the property.” To find out more about Hawthorn’s renovation projects, visit hawthorninc.com.
By Timothy George Designer Ben Robinson’s philosophy behind Plank & Board is to make outdoor furniture as comfortable as pieces found in the living room. Robinson created the company after he couldn’t find the perfect outdoor sectional for his own backyard. So, he decided to build it himself. The style of Robinson’s sustainable outdoor furniture leans toward modernism with clean, simple lines but with comfort in mind for extended lounging. A glimpse inside Robinson’s Kirkwood home makes it quite evident that he’s not your typical furniture designer. Robinson is also a graphic designer and his wife is an interior designer, so their house is meticulously kept like a showroom, featuring not only Robinson’s creations but also other design finds as well. Behind the house, Robinson, who is a self-taught designer, has created a workspace for Plank and Board in a small woodshed with a workbench, plenty of power tools and stacks of his favorite wood. His collection of woodcutters and sanders from Dewalt, Hitachi, Milwaukee, Bosch, and a few hand tools are quite interesting to see, and shows he’s obviously passionate about his work. Robinson loves working with exotic
AFTER
hardwoods such as Ipe, Basralocus and Cumaru. In his words, “the wood is not only beautiful, but it also stands up to the outdoor elements.” Though most of his furniture is found on residential decks and patios, you can find his very first outdoor sectional on the patio of Sauced restaurant in Inman Park.

Deck and Balcony Safety Reading or seeing a story where many people are injured from a collapsing deck or balcony is never good news. Every year hundreds of people are fatally wounded or severely injured by collapsing decks. Improperly constructed or old decks can be at risk of collapsing when overloaded by people, furniture and other items placed upon them. A common hazard associated with a collapsing deck is missing flashing and improper fastening of the deck to the house. Improperly flashed construction allows water to penetrate the homes floor system rim joists, where the deck is attached, causing wood rot, which weakens the structure. Nails and screws can then easily pull out or shear when the deck is loaded with people or furniture. Building codes have become much stricter for deck construction as a result of the many injuries, which occur by falling decks and balconies. Many homeowners don’t see building a deck as a major structural event and fail to secure the required building permits for the construction of a deck. The homeowner chooses to build the deck themselves or hires a contractor who fails to follow today’s building code practices for proper deck construction.

Think about it, you are sending your family, friends and neighbors out on a structure supported by columns and beams floating out in the air. Decks and balconies must be properly designed to handle the loads being placed upon them if you wish your family, friends, and neighbors to be safe. The structure should be designed to accommodate its planned uses for entertainment, fixtures/furniture, and dining. Engineered connectors and fasteners, properly sized posts and beams, stair connections, and railing details are now required by code for elevated and suspended deck structures. The above are to be integrated into your deck
design to insure that all members and materials are properly secured and connected to withstand the forces placed upon the structure. Please avoid costly damage and injuries next time you remodel or add a deck to your home by hiring a state licensed professional who will secure the required building permit for the project. If you choose to build your own deck, contact your local building department and speak to a building inspector who can provide guidance with the code requirements and the proper permit for the project. Lastly, if you have not hired a structural engineer to design your deck, take care and do not allow your deck to become overloaded or exceed capacity. If it gets difficult to move about on the deck, chances are the deck may exceed capacity. Have a safe and enjoyable summer.
