EDITOR’S NOTE

PAYING TRIBUTE IN WHICH WE HAVE SOME SERIOUS FUN AT THE CL ARIDGE.

W

hen last we visited the theater inside the Claridge in November of last year, it was still part of Bally’s in the Caesars Entertainment family and was presenting Legends in Concert. Since that time, the Claridge was sold, the 500 room hotel purchased by TJM Atlantic City, LLC as a non-casino hotel promising, among other things, “entertainment attractions.” Kicking off those attractions in the Celebrity Theater were two shows on Memorial Day weekend, the singing impressionists the Edwards Twins — who are scheduled to headline for the next two years — and Almost Queen, the Queen tribute band who appeared May 21–25. If you’ve never seen the Edwards Twins, prepare yourself for a tribute show like no other. Combined they can do 150 different celebrity impressions, but on any one night will settle on a dozen or so to highlight. In addition to their incredible vocal talents, the elaborate costumes will amaze you, in particular a daring outfit Eddie Edwards wears for his Cher sequence. No more details will be forthcoming — you need to see this for yourself.

Eddie does the ladies and his brother Anthony does the gents, although his high-pitched falsetto while doing Frankie Valli probably hits higher notes than anything Eddie does — except perhaps when Eddie transforms himself into Barbra Streisand. He pulls out all the stops, singing everything from the big ballads like “Memories,” and “People” to the Broadway show-stoppers “There’s A Place For Us” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” His night also featured a dead-on Divine Miss M, Bette Midler, and as noted Cher belting out “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves,” “Half Breed,” and “If You Could Turn Back Time.” Anthony hits the stage as Elton John doing all the biggies like “Rocket Man,” “Bennie and the Jets” and “Crocodile Rock,” and later plays Sonny to Eddie’s Cher for a terrific tribute version of “I’ve Got You Babe.” He also does a speed-dating version of about ten impressions including Valli, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder and Kermit the Frog doing “The Rainbow Connection.” And when Eddie does his Babs, Anthony joins him as Andrea Bocelli for a show-stopping duet to end the evening. n

1970s hitmaker s ameri ca: from hippie love to g r and theft auto. BY dav i d J. s pat z

People have tried to read all sorts of hidden meanings into the tune. Singer-songwriter Randy Newman went so far as to suggest the song is “about a kid who thinks he’s taken acid.” But Beckley told the Idaho State Journal in 2013 that the lyric has more to do with Bunnell’s background as an Air Force brat. “He and his brothers used to kick around in the desert a lot because his dad was stationed at some base out on the California desert,” Beckley said. “Most of it is just purely memories and thoughts about that.” Bunnell offered his personal insight during a 2008 conversation with the Marin Independent Journal. “A Horse with No Name” is “a travelogue in my mind, an environmental song to some degree,” he explained. “We were part of the hippie era of save the earth, and I’ve always been attracted to nature and the outdoors,” he said. “I had spent time as a kid in the Southwest and fell in love with the desert. So there I was in England reminiscing, pining for that vast wilderness called the desert. And, no, the horse wasn’t heroin.” Of all America’s hits, many of which were produced by The Beatles’ producing and engineering team of George Martin and Geoff Emerick, “A Horse with No Name” remains their signature. The song has been embraced by several generations of fans and has been included in movies (American Hustle), television shows (Breaking Bad) and even a video game (Grand Theft Auto). But Bunnell was initially leery about licensing the song to the creators of the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2004. His reluctance stemmed from the violent nature of the game. But his son, Dylan, who’s now 36, told him he shouldn’t turn down an opportunity to introduce the song to yet another generation. If there’s an America song that’s the polar opposite to “A Horse with No Name,” it’s “Muskrat Love,” which only hit 67 on the chart for America but became a No. 4 hit single for The Captain and Tennille. “It’s a polarizing little number,” Beckley said. “After concerts, some people tell us they can’t believe we didn’t play it, while others go out of their way to thank us for not.” n Watch the Emmy-winning Curtain Call with David Spatz, Saturdays at 6pm on WMGM-TV NBC40.

hree weeks after Michael Jackson died in 2009, the Web site TMZ released a 24-second clip of a song recorded by the prince of pop titled “A Place with No Name.” The song sounded suspiciously similar to the soft-rock band America’s “A Horse with No Name,” their debut single that shot to the top of the charts in 1972. It sounded so much like the original recording that based on just a couple of dozens seconds, the surviving members of America took action. No, they didn’t sue the late entertainer’s estate. To the contrary, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell said they were honored an artist of Jackson’s stature sampled the song that helped them earn a Grammy Award for best new artist. “We’re also hoping it will be released soon so that music listeners around the world can hear the whole song and once again experience the incomparable brilliance of Michael Jackson,” Beckley and Bunnell said in a statement at the time. “Michael Jackson really did it justice and we truly hope his fans — and our fans — get to hear it in its entirety. It’s really poignant.” Five years later, America — which headlines Saturday, May 31, at Resorts — finally got its wish. Earlier this month, a second posthumous Michael Jackson compilation album titled Xscape was released, and “A Place with No Name” is on it. The album credits Jackson, Bunnell and songwriter-producer Dr. Freeze as the song’s composers. “It’s a good version and an interesting derivative of the original that I wrote,” Bunnell said. That Jackson would borrow America’s riffs is a testament to the staying power of the soft rock and folk trio, which later became a duo after its third founding member, Dan Peek, quit the band in 1977 to pursue a solo career. Any chances of a full America reunion died when Peek passed away from a heart ailment three years ago. Beckley, Bunnell and Peek went to high school together in England, where their fathers, members of the U.S. Air Force, were stationed. Each played acoustic guitar and had an ear for writing music. Influenced by the distinctive harmonies of Crosby, Stills & Nash, the three formed America. Their music was catchy enough that they were quickly signed by Warner Bros. and “A Horse with No Name” was released as a single. The song, written by Bunnell, had originally been titled “Desert Song.”

ne of the A.C. area’s hardest working musicians, Bobby Lynch, was among the first to play the new Saturday night dueling-piano series that Bally’s Lobby Bar launched May 3. The series was originally expected to run through the month — but there’s been a change of plan. “Dueling pianos has been an tremendous success for the Lobby Bar,” says Howard Weiss, regional director of nightlife operations for Caesars Entertainment’s Eastern Division. It’s proven so popular, in fact, that the run has been extended indefinitely — or at least through the end of July. This Saturday, May 31, will see Wade Preston duel it out with Steve Savage. Lynch, who occasionally plays keys for Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, and is a regular at venues like the Lobby Bar and Harrah’s Eden Lounge, said on Caesars’ blog site (atlanticcityblog.caesars.com) that Lobby Bar fits the mold of the dueling-pianos concept so prevalent in Las Vegas, where he performed in 2000-2001. “It’s a cool venue and it fits the vibe of the show,” Lynch said. “People are roaming through the casino and coming back and forth for a drink. It’s definitely conducive for that dueling piano atmosphere with people coming back with requests.” That, of course, is the whole idea: an improvised set list based solely on requests from audience members or passers-by, and each pianist playing off each other’s leads with lots of pranks and high-jinks interspersed. This Saturday night Preston — a Long Island native who starred in the hit Broadway musical Movin’ Out — takes on Savage, who co-hosts with Paul Seiz and Jarret Izzo a podcast about “roaming the earth as professional piano players and the various wild-life they encounter.” New Jersey products Christian Macchio and Dennis West bring impressive keys credentials to the first duel in June (Saturday, June 7). A pianist since age eight, Macchio supplemented 10 years as an actor in Los Angeles by playing piano bars, then headed back east to create the Captain Jack Band, a tribute to Billy Joel. West (pictured above) has performed professionally for the about 30 years, including a long run in Las Vegas portraying Jerry Lee Lewis in the Legends in Concert series. On June 14 it’s Eddie Lawrence, owner of New York, NY Dueling Pianos that tours around the nation, taking on Matthew Friedman, a 35-year professional musician who, like Preston, is one of only 10 pianists to play the lead role in Movin’ Out since its 2002 inception. n

NIGHTLIFE

reetings and salutations — and another stellar Memorial Day weekend, the best in years. The weather was incredible. No complaints from the thousands who flocked to the shore and partied all weekend long. At Memories, no exception. Nothing but stars. It’s like we never left. The Admiral, his lovely wife, Linda, the Turchi family, the Ligambi family. The Three Amigos minus Anthony, just Dustin and Sean, plus Chris and his crew. And the highlight of the weekend was Sunday’s performance by the hottest new group on the horizon, Low Cut Connie, with my pal Bobby Rydell and his lovely wife, Linda, singing “Wildwood Days” with the group and cheering them on. And that’s how it will be all summer. We open up the doors Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with our happy hour starting at 4, and then we’re live on KOOL 98.3 starting at 5 on Fridays and 7 on Saturdays. Hope to see you there. Now, let’s ask the Geator.

Who knows more about What’s Happening at the Jersey Shore than Atlantic City Weekly? This is the Summer Guide that everyone will be reading!

the Live Bar we will switch to Tuesdays at the Nugget, and we’ll do it from their deck on the marina for the rest of the summer. Do you know who sings the song “I believe that somewhere in the darkest night a candle glows”? My mom said it’s an elderly man with curly salt and pepper hair. He had cancer of his throat. He promised God he would sing beautifully and he did. (Annamarie, Turnersville, N.J.) — “I Believe” was recorded by many artists, including the original hit by Frankie Laine. I play a version by Johnnie Ray, who did it as a duet with Timi Yuro. The R&B version by Roy Hamilton also was a hit that crossed over into the popular charts. But I believe the one you’re thinking of is by Larry Chance and the Earls. Larry was diagnosed with cancer a number of years ago — in fact it was just before he did Rock, Rhythm and Doo Wop for PBS with us in 2001, and he spoke about it during that show when introducing “I Believe.” The cancer was successfully treated and Larry is alive and well and still singing beautifully with the Earls. According to Larry, they close every show with that song as a dedication to original member Larry Palombo, a member of the 82nd Airborne, and to all our fallen heroes and veterans.

What happened to the great Miss Arlene Smith of the Chantels who sang “Maybe” among others? Her voice should be heard! (Susan Monaghan, Cocoa Beach, Fla.) — Arlene, who really was the voice of the Chantels and wrote their early material, left the group in 1959 to pursue a solo career. Unfortunately, even though it was her voice that carried the group, the record buying public was accustomed to hearing the harmonies that the Chantels created, which came from the Roman Catholic high masses and Gregorian chants. And even without Arlene singing lead, the group still prospered. For a while Arlene left the business to become a schoolteacher. The original members reunited in 1997 for the PBS special Doo Wop 50, and in 2010 they were nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but did not make the final induction list. Today the Chantels remain one of the most uniquesounding groups of all time. And here’s a great trivia question: What girl group’s name was inspired by the Answer to the trivia question: Florence Chantels? Hint: They originally were called Greenberg, owner of Tiara Records, comthe Poquellos. Answer below. bined lead singer Shirley Owens’ first name with the Chantels to come up with the name Geator, you need to have some line-dance the Shirelles. ■ lessons at the Nugget! hat might be best about Wanda Sykes is the way that different people love her for different things. No one could ever possibly criticize her for not staying busy: The 50-year-old talent’s one of those rare do-it-all funny women who writes, acts, flawlessly executes voiceover roles — and, of course, tells great and sometimes nasty jokes. Try to nail down one piece of awesome that resonates with fans most, and it quickly becomes apparent there’s no single answer. For some, it’s her saucy attitude on Curb Your Enthusiasm, giving Larry David a run for his money. For others, it’s a slightly obscure run with Comedy Central’s old crank-call puppet show, Crank Yankers. In one episode, her character Gladys Murphy calls a male prison to offer conjugal visits to unpartnered inmates. In another, she calls a video rental store (remember those?) to ream out a manager after an X-rated movie slips into what’s supposed to be an all-ages birthday-party movie screening. The Chris Rock Show remains one of Sykes’ most critically acclaimed moments in the spotlight. She joined Rock’s writing team after opening for him at Caroline’s Comedy Club; subsequently, the crew won an Emmy in ’99 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music, or Comedy Special. (Sykes has been nominated seven times over). Her legendary segment commenting on the Bush-Gore election in 2000, as a “political analyst” who’d had it about up to here with the electoral hijinks of “the white man,” is still remembered today thanks to the joys of YouTube. Sykes superfans cherish her short-lived Wanda Does It, a hilarious six-episode run of a pre-Dirty Jobs pseudo-reality show in which her misadventures constantly try the nerves of her friend and manager, played expertly by Tim Bagley. She tries her hand at being a repo woman, a photographer, a pilot, a heckler and a WNBA coach of the L.A. Sparks.

Of course, there’s also Sykes’s HBO specials: the unforgettable duo of Sick and Tired (2006) and I’ma Be Me, (2009), the latter earning her two more Emmy noms. Young folks, meanwhile, might even recognize her unmistakable voice from the slew of animation roles she’s lent it to: Barnyard, Brother Bear 2, Rio, and Ice Age: Continental Drift. Saving the best for last, us goofball millennials will never forget Sykes’s performance as Biggie Shorty in Pootie Tang, the under-heralded classic of 1991 absurd comedy written and directed by the not-yet-famous Louis C.K. As the forever-unfazed best friend of the film’s hero, Shorty wins the affection of Pootie by never harshing his uncontrollable sex appeal and cool factor. And in the scenes where she’s flygirling out with a bright red wig and headphones on, it looks like maybe Rosie Perez and Jennifer Lopez stole her moves. However, with all this being said about Sykes’s comedic brilliance, it’s her cultural impact as a black gay woman that tons of folks consider to be her most important and significant contributions to society. The recipient of a GLAAD Stephen F. Kolzak Award, she powerfully starred in a 2008 ad campaign that aimed to show young people why they should stop using the phrase “that’s so gay” as an insult. And in September of 2011, Sykes appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show and told her millions of viewers that she had been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS, a non-invasive “stage zero breast cancer.” Sykes made it clear she would not be messing around lightly with cancer: She opted for a bilateral mastectomy, and wasn’t embarrassed to talk about it. As all these roles have come along one by one, we’ve grown to love Wanda Sykes more and more every year — as a performer and as a woman. Which Wanda does it most for you? n

THE BUSINESS MEN’S PLUNGE The Ocean City High School Band brought “Pomp and Circumstance” to a fever pitch on Saturday as John Walton, Plunge Organizer, led over 100 revelers across the sands and into the ocean. We saw folks in suits and briefcases; costumed mascots; and an array of colorfully attired locals, all wildly excited — until, at least, it was time to trudge, soaked, slowly back to the Boardwalk. ne of the most popular subjects of discussion in kitchens is the kind of restaurant cooks would choose to open, given the opportunity. Village Whiskey, in Atlantic City’s Revel Resort, is just that kind of enterprise. Which makes sense, since founder/mastermind Jose Garces readily admits the spirit — translated as “lively water” or “water of life” from Gaellic — is his personal favorite libation. Food here isn’t just prepared and served; it’s handcrafted with meticulous care and precision. This becomes evident sampling from an extensive list of pickles available at the top of the bill of fare. We deeply admire this sort of artisanal cuisine, making strong inroads back to the American culinary catalog. Sampling a pair, golden beets-and-jicama and truffled cauliflower, the labor-intensive workmanship involved was readily obvious. Each is presented in mini Mason jars, sided with crostini, whipped ricotta and olive tapenade. We particularly admired the beets-and-jicama — the latter a starchy plant of Mexican origin whose texture and flavor sits midway between apples and potatoes — bringing the added surprise benefit of mandolin-thin sliced radishes. Accompaniments were for the most part pleasant, although we felt the tapenade would have benefited from less salt. Herb-roasted oysters brought five deeply cupped Wiannos from Massachusetts, laden with the powerful, anise essence of tarragon. The overall effect is a sort of deconstructed Rockefeller, with the tender, fresh quintet of bivalves accorded center stage. A Cobb salad was beautiful and symmetrical in presentation, each element — avocado, bacon, gorgonzola and poached cherry tomatoes atop romaine — organized and sectioned. Blackened chicken proved a nice surprise, powerfully seasoned and assertive, unlike almost any Cobb we’ve ever encountered.

Village Whiskey

LB

My dining partner’s big plate, shrimp and grits, arrived as five of the largest colossal decapods imaginable. A golden sunnyside-up egg rode topside the creamy yellow grits, from industry leader Anson Mills of South Carolina. Braised chard beneath the shrimp added color and a regionally authentic vegetable side. All elements were properly cooked, especially the signature corn meal, which can be unpleasantly gritty if not given correct handling and an appropriate level of moisture. We’d been waiting some time to sample a house signature item, the Whiskey King burger. Our patience was rewarded; this is quite simply the very baddest, most decadent version of a timeless American classic to be found locally. Half a pound of fresh ground beef, accompanied by maple bourbon glazed cippolinis, Rogue bleu cheese, bacon and the coup de grace — a gently seared slice of fois gras. Each element delivered its own delightful essence to the fray; sweetness and aroma via those uniquely Italian members of the allium species — the umami tang of great bleu; crisp, salty bacon and the remarkable complexity of well-cooked fois. Our only trifling concern was structural, as those delicious, but slippery cippolinis caused a bit of a rumpus, turning this into an open-faced, fork and knife sandwich — which in no way diminished the overall experience, believe that. Should you consider yourself a burger aficionado, you deserve to indulge in this rare treat, priced accordingly at $28. Duck fat fries, for us at least, are a requisite addition to this regal patty sandwich.

Served English-style in a conical wrap of newspaper, they were thick-cut, but fully done within. Deeply golden but just barely crisp on the exterior, these are the ideal foil for the intensity of the Whiskey King. We also tried an order of house-made tater tots, crunchy little balls of fried spud, although we weren’t particularly fond of an assertive cheese sauce provided for dipping. It’s hard to visit a place called Village Whiskey and not touch on the liquor selection available. Their voluminous directory includes 30 bourbons, 11 American whiskeys and 11 American ryes, 19 Irish whiskeys, 17 blends and 42 single malt Scotches. There’s also a wide array of mixologist-quality cocktails like the fig-infused side car we imbibed, nicely characterized by our exceptional server Stephanie as “tasting like Christmas.” Desserts included a caramel popcorn sundae, loaded with plenty of crunchy bits of salted caramel, peanuts and maple popcorn atop popcorn ice cream. Our dining partner opted for a red velvet milk shake; thick, cold, creamy and dreamy, containing whole chunks of crimson cake. n

New Jersey Motorsports Park will again offer free admission to children under 12 for its major spectator events, including the early summer ARCA racing series events. Andrew Ranger has captured the series last three races in New Jersey, while battling such well-respected drivers as George Miedecke, Chase Elliott and Cherry Hill native Tom Hessert. “The ARCA Racing Series has long been recognized for the diversity in the types of venues on the schedule,” ARCA president Ron Drager said. “Having the New Jersey Motorsports Park road course on the schedule truly rounds out the full range of venues to include paved short tracks, superspeedways, intermediate tracks and the mile dirt state fairground ovals. New

Jersey Motorsports Park is a first-class facility and we’re honored to be included on their annual schedule.” For those who are new to racing and just might be interested in checking out the sport will be pleased with the aesthetics of New Jersey Motorsports Park. It sits on a picturesque lot of more than 500 acres in Millville. It’s nestled snugly in a beautifully forested region surrounded by scenic rivers and the nearby Delaware Bay. The Weekend of Thunder will feature four exciting racing series and six races. Joining the ARCA Racing Series will be the Trans Am Series, the Pirelli world Challenge Series and the Fidelity Power Systems SCCA Pro IT Series. And the atmosphere will be festive throughout the weekend: There will be bar-

becues, a kickoff luau, brews and food at the Finish Line Pub, and music by the Rollers and Megan Knight. But don’t look for the aforementioned Trout in Millville Sunday. The speed demon will be playing ball as Angels battle the American League West leading Oakland A’s over the weekend. “But it sounds like it’ll be a good time,” he said. “I wish I could be there.” n

Weekend of Thunder New Jersey Motorsports Park, 8000 Dividing Creek Rd, Millville. Tickets $40 for both days; $20 for Saturday; $25 for Sunday. Special price packages are available. 856-327-7256 njmp.com

ike Trout travels at the almost inhuman velocity of 3.52 seconds from home plate to first base. The “Millville Meteor,” as the L.A. Angels centerfielder is known, is justifiably regarded as the fastest and most popular attraction to come out of that Cumberland County, N.J., town; he flies around the bases and leads all baseball players when it comes to votes for this year’s All-Star game. But, really, Trout isn’t all that fast — at least, not in comparison to what will be invading Millville over the weekend. Because there will be some seriously rapid objects moving into the New Jersey Motorsports Park during its seventh annual Weekend of Thunder, starting Saturday, May 31 and continuing Sunday, June 1. Competition will include the return of the Trans Am: America’s Road Racing Series, which dates back to 1966. For the uninitiated, a Trans Am Series race is 100 miles in length and does not require a mandatory pit stop for fueling or driver changes. In other words, it’s an event for those who are obsessed with speed. A Trans Am Series race is considered a sprint, or flat-out speed from start to finish matching driver versus driver. So, hey — what does Millville’s favorite and fastest-on-foot son think of such a race? “It sounds really cool,” Trout told Atlantic City Weekly (while being adored by fans during the Angels’ recent two-game series against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park). “I understand anyone who is into racing and fast cars. I’m all for these kind of events in Millville.” Past Trans Am champions include Scott Pruett, Scott Sharp and Boris Said — all of whom will be behind the wheel this weekend. The series is sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing, which launched its first Trans Am Series season in 1966. “We’re happy to continue with the ARCA Racing Series [presented by Menards] as one of our traditional race weekends at NJMP,” said Brad Scott, general manager/ COO of New Jersey Motorsports Park. “Each season the racing during this event seems to get better and better, and we have some additional announcements, including this year’s support series, that will enhance the weekend.”

X-MEN REUNITED M UTANT STR AINS MERG E IN ‘ DAYS OF FUTU RE PA ST.’ PLUS: ADAM SANDLER .

Bill Stryker (Josh Helman) and President Nixon (Mark Camacho), who looks like Nixon if he received a chin implant from Jay Leno. The best superhero movies provide great action sequences and a strong emotional connection to the characters. Days of Future Past does precisely that with considerable help from the core trio of Fassbender, Lawrence and McAvoy, who provide an excellent continuity between the past and the future. X-Men: Days of Future Past has launched the summer moviegoing season in style.

rew Barrymore brings out the softer side of Adam Sandler. In their third romantic comedy, Blended, following The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates, they once again prove that their sweet chemistry is charming. The story is more than a bit preposterous, but their ability to make this budding relationship seem believable romantically while also blending in their skills at physical comedy, makes for a likable trip to the multiplex. n Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) join forces with Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) in one last effort to change history. Kitty sends Wolverine’s mind back fifty years to his 1973 body in order for him to find Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and convince him to help stop the sentinels from being created by Dr. Trask (Peter Dinklage). The 1973 version of shape shifter Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) has a more direct notion of how to stop Dr. Trask; she plans to kill him. The younger Xavier is a broken man with no hope left and it takes some convincing for

him to buy into the message from his future self, delivered by Wolverine. However, when Xavier does agree, the film kicks into another gear since the plan includes rescuing the younger Magneto (Michael Fassbender) from an underground bunker at the Pentagon. This prison break takes the skills of a funloving new mutant, Peter (played by Evan Peters), who can move a lot faster than a speeding bullet. His joy at what he can do injects a much-needed dose of fun to this otherwise ultra-serious endeavor. Along the way we also meet some humans of note including Wolverine’s nemesis Major

ringing together the original cast and the reboot cast from a franchise movie series can be a difficult, slippery slope. How does one come up with a story that appears seamless and doesn’t feel cluttered despite having to integrate so many X-Men into the mix. Bryan Singer, who directed the first two films in the X-Men series has figured it out in splendid fashion with help from previous X-Men contributors: screenwriters Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand), Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class) and Matthew Vaughn, who co-wrote and directed First Class. Days of Future Past juggles a complex story with dark overtones, a huge cast of X-Men past and present and manages to provide some welcome comedy in the midst of the gloom. Time travel is another tricky element that needs a deft touch, and Days of Future Past handles it with an impressive sense of balance. The film begins in a future world in 2023 fraught with death and destruction as the remaining X-Men try to survive a relentless army of sentinels, giant robots that were designed to kill mutants. The sentinels have nearly eliminated the mutants, but in doing so what’s left of the planet isn’t exactly a nirvana for the humans they were designed to protect and serve.
