s part of the public relations push to expand the reputation of Atlantic City has a place that offers more than just gaming, the food festival has become a major play in the casino handbook. Trump Taj Mahal, which has presented a popular Oktoberfest every year in the fall for the last decade or so has decided to jump into the summer fray with a new event: The casino hotel presents its debut Grapes and Grain Festival this Saturday, June 7, from 4-8pm. Presented by TownSquare Media, this festival has traveled across the country with stops in Portland, Ore. and Long Branch, N.J. before arriving this weekend in Atlantic City. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door for the four-hour sampling experience, which features great wines and micro and craft beers from vineyards
and breweries around the country. Those breweries are a who’s who of hoppy deliciousness: Angry Orchard, Blue Moon, Magic Hat, Clown Shoes, Dogfish Head, Smuttynose and River Horse. The wineries are no less tasty: Rutherford Wine Company (Lander-Jenkins Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon); Treasury Wine Estates (Matua Sauvignon Blanc and Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon); Moet Hennessy (Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillion,Terrazas Reserva Malbec), and King Estate (Acrobat Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, NXNW Chardonnay). The vino and brews will be paired with delicious food and great music — plus a chance to win a trip to Paris or Germany. Trump One Card holders receive a $5 discount. What else do you need to know? Meanwhile, Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian is happy with the two beach concerts and considers them a “good start” for the ambitious plans he has for the city next summer. “Next year, I’d like to see at least a dozen major events,” says the mayor, “with six on the beach and perhaps six at Bader Field. We figure there are 14 weeks that make up the summer, and I’d like to see something big almost every week.” Guardian says few places in the country are better equipped than Atlantic City to stage concerts surfside: “There are very few beaches in the country that have the ability and size to do something like this. Thousands of people can stand in a field and watch concerts all over the country, but having something like this — two major concerts on the beach, right next to the ocean? This is unique.” In 2011 and 2012, Bader Field, the 143acre site of the former municipal airport that sits on the outskirts of town, became the concert grounds for several huge shows, including the Dave Matthews Band Caravan, performances by Phish and Metallica’s Orion Music + More music and lifestyle festival. However, organizers of those shows complained the city nickel-and-dimed them to death with last-minute add-on expenses, so the old airport sat empty last summer, save a season-ending seafood festival. Guardian, however, is trying to patch things up with Red Light Management, the company that produced several of the big Bader Field shows and who manages many major artists. The mayor said he’s already met with the company if an effort to persuade them to return to Atlantic City. He’s also asking them to consider staging some events to the beach. Although he likes having the Bader Field option, Guardian and the alliance would prefer seeing big shows and events on the beach, because it forces people to come into the heart of the city and make their way across the city’s main tourism thoroughfare — the Boardwalk — to get to the sand. The Atlantic City Alliance is making 60,000 free tickets available for Blake Shelton on July 31 and Lady Antebellum on Aug. 3. he Atlantic City Alliance — the private, casino-funded tourism marketing group — wasn’t thinking slot machines, blackjack and how many high-rolling gamblers it could attract when it booked two major country acts to headline a pair of free beach concerts — Blake Shelton on July 31 and Lady Antebellum on Aug. 3 — just three days apart this summer. It was, however, thinking about a mantra that sums up the hospitality industry’s entire raison d’être: Putting heads in beds. “Everyone knows we have casinos here,” says Jeff Guaracino, the ACA’s chief communications and strategy officer. “What we’re trying to show people is all the other things Atlantic City has to offer year-round. So the people who say we’re just here to help the casinos are 100 percent wrong. In fact, the real answer is that the casinos are investing $150 million in helping Atlantic City, because that’ll also help them, too.” The ACA’s mission, he adds, is to bring people onto the island. Once they’ve accomplished that, it’s up to the individual casinos to use their advertising and promotional programs to lure people into their buildings. “There are three things we do: marketing, imagine-building and citywide events,” Guaracino says. “Each is designed to get more people to consider Atlantic City. Gamblers for over 30 years have known and loved Atlantic City and still come here. The ACA is trying to get all those other types of tourists who, before, never thought Atlantic City was for them.” There was no particular reason why the ACA decided to go with country acts to open and close an artificially created long summer weekend, Guaracino says. Once Shelton was committed, it made sense to stick with country for the second show, to try and hold the audience he would attract on a Thursday night all the way through Sunday. “There are a lot of artists that we also made offers to,” he adds, “who said [they’re] . . . not scheduled to travel or perform this summer. And one artist who [people] would very much know said, ‘I’d just like to take off in August,’ and turned down a very lucrative offer.” While Guaracino wouldn’t name the act, he admitted it was one with New Jersey beach sand in their shoes. Several sources said the act was Bon Jovi, which for 30 years has been very high on every casino’s list of heretofore untouchables.

GODSPEED, GOOD MAN GO ODBYE TO ONE DE AR FRIEND — AND BEST WISHES TO ALL THE REST.
O
nce again, greetings and salutations. Before our Q&A, I must tell you that I am saddened and devastated about the death of my friend Lewis Katz. I go back with Lewis and his family almost 50 years. He was a philanthropist and a brilliant businessman, but more importantly, he made everyone‘s life who came into his life better. Words cannot express the impact that Lewis had on our lives: He was a giver, not a taker, a visionary, and a man who loved life. The rest of this column was written before we heard the terrible news, and we start with an e-mail from another pal of mine, Tommy Silverman, founder of Tommy Boy Records, who will be joining Kenny Gamble, Al Bell, Seymour Stein, and yours truly in New York
Exp. 6/21/14 ACW
on Monday, June 9, for the New Music Seminar panel “It’s Still About the Music.” As Tommy says, let’s ask the Geator. My man, pots and pans. We all miss you, Geats. When Ben E. King was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame last year by Mike Stoller, they said they took the Crowns and turned them into the Drifters. — Tom Silverman, New York City That is exactly what happened. You know that I love Ben E. Nelson, which is his real name. He became the King in 1958, using the name of an uncle, James King, which fit perfectly with the group he was singing with at the time, the Five Crowns. When George Treadwell fired all the original Drifters, he basically took the Crowns,
Name: YAN CHEN (00YANC); Width: 4.9375 in; Depth: 2.63 in; Color: Black plus three
including Ben E. King and Charlie Thomas, and turned them into the Drifters — and when producers Lieber and Stoller needed a new lead for the group’s first single, “There Goes My Baby,” which Ben E. had written, he was their man. Will you be at the Lighthouse Pointe Thursday nights? — Joann Fontana, Philadelphia Yes, we will start at the Lighthouse Pointe Thursday, June 26. We won’t be there Thursday, July 3, because it’s my big birthday bash, which we’ll celebrate at Memories in Margate after I do our happy hour at the Golden Nugget. Then we will switch to Tuesday happy hours at the Nugget, and we’ll continue like that all the way through Labor Day — plus we’ll return to the Lighthouse on Saturday, Sept. 20, for our last party of the year in Wildwood. And by the way, mark your calendars for Saturday, Sept. 13: the annual Baby Boomers Rock & Roll Revival at La Costa Lounge in Sea Isle City. More about that as the summer progresses.
Jerry, who/what are the Pony Mobbers? I’ve heard you mention it on the radio a few times. — Carol Ann, Atlantic City The Pony Mobbers go back with me to 1962 at the Ice House in Cherry Hill. They were a group of guys who hung out together and would come to my dances all the time. I nicknamed them the Pony Mobbers because they were always together, like a pack of wild ponies, and to this day they have an annual reunion down at the shore. I’ll keep you posted when that is, or you can come on by to Memories, where a lot of them still get together on a Saturday night. ■
Got a question for Jerry? Write AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. More info on Jerry’s appearances is at www. geator.net. Keep on rocking, ’cause you only rock once!

THIS MONTH IS A PARTICU L ARLY HIP ONE ON ATL ANTIC CIT Y STAG ES . 1. THE AVETT BROTHERS
B
efore there was Mumford, there were the Avett Brothers. Before the Lumineers lit up the boot-stomping folk world, when the Head and the Heart was just an idea and a prayer, and while Jake Bugg was still buzzing around in short pants, the Avett Brothers were finger-picking their way across the country, slowly but surely building up a fan base that’s as strong now as it’s ever been. A decade and a half in, the North Carolina natives are still enjoying the kind of success that’s supposed to fade out. Instead of fading, though, their star keeps getting brighter. Though they’ve been making music together since the turn of the century, the Avetts didn’t truly take off beyond indie folk circles until five years ago, when they teamed up with superproducer Rick Rubin for 2009’s I and Love and You. The pairing worked, with the title track bringing them widespread
accolades as the newest of the authentic roots rockers. Rubin has since led the band to even greater heights, with last year’s Magpie and the Dandelion debuting at No. 5 on the Billboard charts. Though their second album in less than two years, Magpie is also among their strongest work. The modern roots record kicks off with the down-home “Open Ended Life,” an outlaw country burner that recalls the best of Waylon Jennings. The album then careens through genres, showing off the band’s similar comfort with quiet and tender (“Souls Like the Wheels”) and straight-up rock (the self-aware behind-the-wheels trucker “Vanity”). They find a high point on the centerpiece “Skin and Bones,” a confessional dirge that brought the house down on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this year. It’s appropriate that “Another Is Waiting” is one of the poppiest numbers on Magpie, as it finds a talented young (female, but who’s counting?) performer about to be tossed into the maelstrom of the here-today-bored-tomorrow music industry. The Avetts have managed to avoid the spit-out part
of chewed-up-and-spit-out while still ascending to the kind of heights that result in playing as Bob Dylan’s backing band on the Grammys. But on “Another Is Waiting,” they seem well aware that such a fall could come at any time—and they’re ready and willing to make peace with that. Despite finding such success over the last five years, the Avett Brothers—who are, it’s worth noting, actually brothers—have managed to keep the band as a close-knit family affair. Sometimes this manifests itself in small ways, such as cellist Joe Kwon, who also does the band’s hotel bookings. But more often, those roots are found in the music, such as “Morning Song,” whose quiet opening builds to a grand sing-along tagline filled with the voices of family and friends singing, “Have to find that melody alone.” The holy chorus even includes a beloved aunt who passed from cancer not long after lending her voice to the recording. That kind of personal, familial touch has endeared fans and made their concerts such legendarily intimate affairs—even when filling huge concert halls.
2. FITZ AND THE TANTRUMS Fitz and Tantrums, who’ll perform Friday at the Borgata, impressed at a sold-out Electric Factory show last fall. The neo-soul act — pictured, right, and on the cover — wowed the crowd as charismatic vocalist Michael Fitzpatrick and co. showcased cuts from their latest album, More Than Just a Dream. It’s stylish retro cool. Friday, June 6, 9pm. $39.50. Music Box at the Borgata, A.C. — ED CONDRAN
90 DAYS
4. MORRISSEY The Moz, who played the House of Blues 18 months ago, is like k.d. lang: The iconic singer, who’s arguably the most amusing lyricist of a generation (his unfortunately dry biography notwithstanding; expect a more informative tome over the next few years) evidently prefers A.C. over Philly for whatever reason. Why? Who knows. Morrissey doesn’t talk much. But hopefully he’ll offer an encore this time out — and hopefully he’ll go way back into his canon and maybe even slip in more Smiths songs. There’s always rumors that this will be the final Morrissey tour. We’ll believe it when we don’t see him. Friday, June 6, 8pm. Ovation Hall, Revel, A.C. $71.75, $81.75. — E.C.
3. MIKE BIRBIGLIA Mike Birbiglia has turned lemons into lemonade, repeatedly. The witty comic, who’ll perform June 14 at the Borgata, turned sleepwalking into a Broadway show, a film (Sleepwalk With Me) and a book (Sleepwalk With Me and Other Painfully True Stories). But Birbigs, as he is known to fans, is more than a one-joke pony, and his latest batch of material is hilarious. His warped take on relationships and self-deprecating wit are two big reasons to catch him. Another: He’s not going to be on the road as much as usual since he’s working on the cinematic version of his latest show, “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend.” Saturday, June 14, 9pm. Music Box at the Borgata. $25. — E.C.

Anything goes with DJ Steve Aoki. The president and founder of indie label Dim Mak Records likes to take chances and collaborate. Rivers Cuomo of Weezer fame, DJ Tiesto, will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and the raunchy Peaches are just some of the disparate recording artists Aoki has worked with since 2007. He likes to mix it up and that’s evident at his live shows; don’t be taken aback if some surprise guests turn up at Aoki’s event. The freewheeling entertainer is unpredictable and wide open to possibilities. Saturday, June 28. HQ Nightclub, Revel. — E.C.

At this weekend’s Revel show, expect a setlist littered with songs old and new, along with the Brothers’ famously wellpicked covers. (Before the concert, you’d be well served to YouTube their version of John Denver’s “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” which they romped through backstage at The Tonight Show.) The combination of a constantly changing set and a healthy back catalog keeps things dynamic for the Avett Brothers, who have been known to go years without playing a particular song from their repertoire, and then reintroduce it when fans least expect it. It’s a playbook that dates back decades, harkening back to when roots music came around the first time—and that’s been copied by all of the raucous acoustic hootenanniers who’ve come in the Avetts’ wake. Even if the Avett Brothers didn’t invent it, they’re still some of the best practitioners out there. Saturday., June 7, 8pm. $55-$65. bayside beaut y three summers in, l atz’s by the bay is a dining room ne ar the top of its game. BY FR AN K GAB Ri E L
H
oused in a charming two-story cottage facing Somers Point’s bay front, Latz’s by the Bay has, since opening in autumn of 2011, become one of the mainland’s definitive BYOBs. This makes sense, considering the family pedigree: Various family members have owned and operated Atlantic City’s iconic Knife and Fork Inn for nearly seven decades. A recent Saturday night repast began with two house signatures: Drew’s seafood chowder — an homage to fourth-generation restaurateur Andrew — and Latz’s corn fritters. The fritters were actually a pair of mid-size corn pancakes, described on the menu as having been pan-griddled — quite different from the standard deep-frying most often employed for fritters. They were tasty, golden and properly cooked, if perhaps lacking the wow factor that the phrase “a Latz family recipe” might suggest. That wasn’t a problem, though, for the soup. While it arrived more than five minutes after my partner’s starter, that minor concern vanished once we dug into the wide bowl of rich, red broth. Masterfully blending diced clams, shrimp and crab meat along with ideally-sized chunks of potato, this exceptional creation provided just the sort of response we’d anticipated. In fact, I’d go a step farther: This was probably the best soup we’ve yet tasted in 2014. House salads, accompanying entrees, delivered a well-above-average mix of greens — we counted four different lettuces — along with diced tomatoes, sliced cucumber and onions doused with hearty balsamic dressing. My entrée, a crispy half duckling, was a smashing interpretation
of that game bird. Rather than a standard seared breast, typically served mid-rare and sliced on a bias, this halved poultry was done in Asian style. The result was a sheath of delicious, crunchy skin, covering meat that although fully cooked, remained moist, tender and richly flavored.Relishing the duck’s bone-in nature so much, we took matters in hand, cleaning the drumstick and thigh sans the help of utensils. Sweet and sour cherry sauce, bright and viscous, was served alongside, adding lovely bits of contrast. As if that wasn’t enough, a mountainous pile of velvety, flawless mashed potatoes and half a dozen spears of grilled asparagus filled the remaining space on this magnificently composed plate. My companion’s twin crab cakes were large patties of almost entirely jumbo lump meat. They sat atop a bed of wild rice and more of that pretty, seasonal asparagus. Paler in color than we expected from a pan sautéed product, this in no way diminished the delicate, seafood essence. We were especially taken with the minimal amount of binding ingredients — most often mayonnaise, egg and breadcrumbs — contained in these ivory beauties, and were pleased to help in finishing the sizeable portion. Desserts proved equally dynamic; mine another house specialty, Latz’s lemon pie. A tall, wide wedge of bright yellow custard topped with whipped cream, it ate like an elevated lemon version of classic Key lime. Scottish Maighread — translated as “Margaret” — was a sort of peach crumble, fruit folded into a shortbread crust and baked. Accompanied by a ramekin of clotted cream, this is just the sort of ethnically authentic pastry we most admire. It paired exquisitely well with tea, ordered from a massive directory of more than 30 available. Worthy of mention: Latz’s is one of very few eateries we know of locally offering a genuine tea program, with pleasant traditional accoutrements scones, savories and petite desserts. Available Thursday through Saturday from noon to 4pm, this elegant afternoon service is the provenance of Andrew’s wife and coowner, Adrienne. n

Fieri’s Chophouse and Buca Di Beppo, have brought a pair of exceptional executive chefs onboard. Guy Fieri’s Chophouse’s executive chef will be Giancarlo Generosi, current chef du cuisine of scarduzio’s at showboat. With a background including both a degree in hotel and restaurant management along with 25 years of food industry experience, the brookhaven, Pa., native seems well suited to take the helm of Fieri’s initial a.C. entry. Calling the planned cuisine “excitement on a plate,” Generosi goes on to characterize the new venture as “a funky upscale casual steak house.” buca’s new leader, Maurizio

he reputation of ventriloquists isn’t good,” Terry Fator admits. “But that doesn’t matter, since people flock to see us. They love us.” Well — they do if you’re one of two specific ventriloquists. Veteran puppet master Jeff Dunham normally tops Forbes’ list of most profitable comedians. And Fator himself, typically, is in the top five on that list. What’s that about? Fator, 48, is a master ventriloquist when it comes to singing. Curiously, he can’t keep his lips closed while speaking, but when he belts out songs: no problem. “Who else can do singing impressions and keep their lips sealed?” he points out to Atlantic City Weekly via phone from his Las Vegas home. “A good way to make a great living is to do something no one else can do.” Indeed: Fator, who delivers spot-on Michael Jackson, Cher and Louis Armstrong impressions, and who’ll perform Saturday at Caesars
BY E D CO N D R A N
Atlantic City, is so good at what he does that he has a $100 million contract in Vegas. “I’ve been very fortunate,” Fator said. “My life is unbelievable.” The performer strives to be funny — but his first order of business is nailing the impression. “I’m all about sounding exactly like that person,” he says. “Nothing less will do. I love it when I look out in the audience and the people are simply amazed at how much the puppets sound like the original recording.” The laid-back ventriloquist made a name for himself in 2007 on America’s Got Talent, which continues to name-drop him and detail his success seven years later. “I have no problem with that,” Fator says. “I wouldn’t be here without that show. But you have to work really hard after the show gives you that exposure... One of the greatest things I’ve heard is that Simon Cowell said I’m the most successful reality show contestant in history. He said that I’m
more successful than all of the American Idol winners combined.” Well, none of those performers are ventriloquists. So let’s go back to the original question: Why are Fator and Dunham so successful? “It’s because we’re not just standard ventriloquists,” Fator says. “We’re not your grandfather’s ventriloquist. Look at Jeff and his puppet ‘Ahmed the Dead Terrorist.’ He took something ter-
rible, something incredibly negative, and made it into something funny. He and I are moving forward and stretching the boundaries. I want to keep on pushing the envelope.” n TERRY FATOR Saturday, June 7. 9pm. Caesars Circus Maximus Theater, 2100 Pacific Avenue, A.C. Tickets $55, $65 and $75. Belle would have made an excellent double bill with another film from Toronto, 12 Years A Slave. In this English period drama, set in the late 1800s when England still participated in the slave trade — and also based on a true story — the titled character (played by Gugu Mbatha Raw) is the child of a British admiral (Matthew Goode) and a Caribbean slave. She is left by her father to be raised in high society by her uncle (Tom Wilkinson) with the understanding that her status will always be limited by her skin color. Despite this she questions her status when her family entertains guests: How may I be so high in rank to dine with the servants but to low to dine with my family? She also falls in love with a young man John Davinier (Sam Reid) who is fighting to abolish slavery, allowing director Amma Asante the opportunity to mix a period romance with an interesting examination of the British slave trade. Mbatha Raw is marvelous as the strong headed, intelligent and beautiful Belle, with a terrific supporting cast that also includes Sarah Gordon, Emily Watson and Downton’s Abbey’s Penelope Wilton. It’s nice to be reminded in the popcornmovie summer that there are still some filmmakers making us ponder serious topics. n

typical summer movie season is filled with superheroes, big name comedies, family-friendly animated flicks and other big tent pole extravaganzas. Therefore, having the opportunity to see a couple of superb dramas in the middle of the bombast was a welcome change of pace. Both The Railway Man and Belle are “based on a true story” dramas that were shown at the Toronto Film Festival last September. I didn’t get a chance to see them in Toronto but if I had they would have both made my top ten list for the festival. The Railway Man features an Oscar worthy performance by Colin Firth as World War II survivor Eric Lomax, a prisoner of war who was brutally tortured at the hands of the Japanese and has never been able to shake the debilitating nightmares that have plagued him for decades. However, when he meets and marries Patti (Nicole Kidman), she is determined to help him find some peace. With the help of a fellow POW and friend (played by Stellan Skarsgard), she encourages him to confront the man who tortured him (Hiroyuki Sanada), leading to a remarkable journey of anger, hope and forgiveness. Based on the memoir by Lomax and beautifully directed by Australian Jonathan Teplitsky, the film does a masterful job of traveling between the past and present, with a lovely performance by Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as the younger Lomax creating a perfect synchronicity with Firth’s brilliant work. The tears this film evokes are tears of joy at seeing a man find the grace to confront his past and watch the pain and anger melt away.
