Today, 40 years after he first performed an electrifying first show in a residence hall at the University of Delaware, Thorogood, 64, is surprised he’s lasted four decades in the music business. Or any business, for that matter: There was a time when he was hoping for a career in baseball. In 1976, he played for a semi-pro team in Delaware that was part of the Roberto Clemente League and he was good enough at second base to earn rookie of the year honors. But after he saw a performance by blues singer John P. Hammond, music became a powerful lure, and as he began developing his guitar chops, he found himself juggling baseball with blues rock. Eventually, when it became clear he was a better musician and songwriter than he was a ballplayer, Thorogood plunged into show biz full time. But old habits and interests die hard. When speaking about his 40 years in the music business, Thorogood can’t help but invoke the name of baseball legend Willie Mays and the ballplayer’s reaction after hitting his 500th career home run. A reporter asked him if he ever though he’d hit 500 homers. “Mays said, ‘When I was a rookie, if I thought I was going to hit 500, I wouldn’t have hit 50. My goal was to hit one, and after I hit one, my goal was to hit two,’” Thorogood said. He feels the same way about his music career. “You don’t really think of it in those terms,” he explained. “You think if I could just get a gig today, and then get a gig tomorrow, and maybe get a record out.” After Thorogood got in on the infancy of MTV, classic rock radio came along and latched onto his music. Today, satellite radio is still carrying his banner. Still, he says, the biggest surprise was back when he had his first hit single — and, suddenly, acts that he wanted to open for were calling to ask if they could open for him. “Now that was really freaky,” he said. “That one was a tough one to get around. We were prepared for failure, not for success.” n Watch the emmy-winning Curtain Call with david spatz, saturdays at 6pm on WMGM-TV NBC40.

uring a 40-year career fronting a band called the Destroyers and writing some monster-sounding blues-rock songs, George Thorogood’s music has gained a large and loyal following around the world. Eight of his 16 studio albums have either gone gold or platinum, and he’s sold more than 15 million recordings. His biggest single, “Bad To the Bone,” is one of the most iconic songs and packs one of the most familiar riffs from the early 1980s. The song still gets plenty of airplay, is heard regularly at sporting events, has been used in commercials and has popped up in movie and TV shows. So it’s probably just as well that songs Thorogood originally wrote with other artists in mind never got made, for one reason or another. “Bad to the Bone” is a perfect example: Thorogood initially thought blues legend Muddy Waters would be perfect for the song. But the tune never got past Waters’ front line of defense. In fact, Thorogood said, the bluesman’s manager was almost offended. “They said it’s a real sacrilege that an up-and-coming white blues musician would write a song for one of the all-time great blues masters,” Thorogood recalled with a sardonic laugh during a recent phone call. “And I said that’s silly, a great song is a great song. If Elvis Presley had been alive, I’d have given it to him.” It wasn’t that Thorogood wanted to give away songs because he lacked confidence in the sound he and the Destroyers were producing. When they were just getting known, they were good enough to appear as the music stars on Saturday Night Live. And, in 1981, they parlayed what was supposed to be a onenight one-off into a full-blown tour opening for the Rolling Stones. So they weren’t exactly chopped liver; it’s just that Thorogood heard other voices in his head singing lead vocals on his original music. For instance, Thorogood wrote “I Really Like Girls” with the band Stray Cats in mind. “I Drink Alone” should have been a George Jones song. And “Born To Be Bad,” he said, was written thinking Steppenwolf would be the perfect group, because Thorogood liked lead singer John Kay’s voice. “When I put those songs out there, I was always thinking of it in those terms,” said Thorogood, who’ll lead the Destroyers onto the stage of the House of Blues at Showboat Thursday night, June 19. “It’s like someone who puts together a movie and they go, ‘We’re gonna make this movie and it’s gonna be called Raiders of the Lost Ark. I see Harrison Ford playing the part.’”

Malcolm In The Pool Frankie Muniz hosts June 21’s Epic Saturdays Party, AND guitar god Robby Krieger plays a free show at Eden Lounge By R ay Schw e i b e rt

H

e’s a Bergen County, New Jersey product who races cars, writes and produces screenplays, drums in an indie-rock band called Kingsfoil, and has more than a dozen movie roles to his credit. But Frankie Muniz will likely always be best known as the brainy lead character in the classic TV sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, which ended a six-year run in April 2006 and earned seven Emmy, seven Golden Globe, and one Grammy award nomination. The 28-year-old Muniz hosts the Epic Saturdays Party at The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s on June 21. Spinning the hits will be popular Rochester, N.Y., native DJ Koko and Atlantic City’s own DJ Dnial. Doors open 10pm. He’s not the only star stepping out at Harrah’s Saturday night: Hall-of-Fame rocker Robby Krieger, former guitarist and principal songwriter for famed 1960s rock band The Doors (“Light My Fire,” “L.A. Woman,” “Touch Me”), returns to perform a free show at Harrah’s intimate Eden Lounge for a second straight summer. The show is called Robby Krieger’s Jam Kitchen and also features bassist/multi-instrumentalist Arthur Barrow, keyboardist Tommy Mars (both of whom played extensively with the late Frank Zappa), brass specialist Larry Klimas (former saxophonist for the band War), and Tom Brechtlein, a past drummer for legendary jazz keyboardist Chick Corea. “We had a great audience [at Eden Lounge] last year and I hope to see some of the fans back there again,” said Krieger. Krieger’s A.C. gig caps a short tour that began June 14 at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, where he performed alongside fellow music luminaries like former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, singer Damian Marley (youngest son of late reggae legend Bob Marley), and others. Krieger has toured extensively since the disbanding of The Doors in 1973, including with former Doors bandmate Ray Manzarek until Manzarek’s death in 2013, embracing the legacy of the band that made him famous while also introducing a lot of the music he wrote as a solo artist. n

r. Alexakis? No, not quite right. Professor Everclear? Not exactly, but closer. The students at Los Angeles College of Music have a few more months yet to figure how to address their new professor and chair of the songwriting department, who happens to be the lead singer of the band responsible for ’90s megahits “Santa Monica,” “Father of Mine” and “I Will Buy You a New Life.” But come September, what they call him may be the least of their troubles. “I’m gonna kick people’s asses,” says Everclear lead singer and songwriter Art Alexakis, on the phone from his home in Pasadena, California. “It’s not going to be you coming in and I play a bunch of songs. We’re going to work through the history of songs. We’re going to study great songs. I might give people an assignment to write a song in one minute with rocks and sticks.” Students will at least have the summer to do some remedial brush-up, as their professor is hitting the road once again with the Summerland tour, a now-regular seasonal ritual that brings top-charting bands of the Clinton era back into the spotlight, all on one stage. With Everclear as the ringleader, the past two years have featured bands such as Gin Blossoms, Live and Marcy Playground. This year Alexakis filled out the lineup with friends old and new: Soul Asylum (“Runaway Train,” “Black Gold”), Eve 6 (“Inside Out,” “Here’s to the Night”) and Spacehog (“In the Meantime”). They hit the House of Blues at Showboat this week. “I pick the bands I love,” Alexakis says. “It’s that simple. I love these bands. I want bands that are guitar-based that had big hits back then and are still putting out records now.” Some friendships, such as his one with Eve 6, go back to high school, and Alexakis says he hangs out with them regularly. Spacehog opened up for Everclear back in the day, and while Alexakis’ relationship with Soul Asylum is less familiar, he has long followed the group. “When I was in college in the ’80s, I used to go see Soul Asylum,” he says. “I was a huge fan of the Minneapolis scene. They were the badass punk stepchild of that scene.”

He’s not worried about the group gelling, though. Last year, he didn’t know Live too well before the Summerland tour started, but they all quickly grew close. “We all became great friends and played on each other’s songs,” he says. “[All of the Summerland bands] would all come out at the end of the show and play ‘Santa Monica’ together.” Though the lineup has changed from year to year, Alexakis sees a commonality in everyone’s motivations for coming on tour. “We love rock ’n’ roll and want to play and make a living doing it,” he says. “Everybody has hits. It’s like rock ’n’ roll summer camp for middle-aged guys.” As such, the tours are calmer now than they were in the early days; last week Alexakis celebrated 25 years sober. “My thing is rock ’n’ roll and food,” he says. “Conversations backstage are like, ‘Hey, did you try the brisket at catering?’” But while some changes come naturally with age, many more owe to the fact that the music industry is very different from the one in which these guys all first got famous. “It’s not like you tour to support a record—now a record is just a tool to tour on,” he explains. “One reason I started Summerland was to have a venue for these bands to make a living by going out and playing. No one’s getting rich. It’s an anomaly right now that we’re not trying to sell out arenas.” As such, it’s not uncommon for the musicians on the tour to supplement their income where they can: teaching music lessons, acting in movies, even getting into higher education. It’s a way to use those skills honed from years in the music business to cobble together a living in a streaming-music world. “I’ve always wanted to teach songwriting,” Alexakis says of the class he begins teaching this fall. “It’s the one thing I’m pretty good at. I’m an okay guitar player, an okay singer, but I can write songs.” n Summerland Tour Showboat’s House of Blues Saturday, June 21, 6:30pm, $30-$45. 343-4000. houseofblues.com/atlanticcity

This Week’s Live Entertainment: Thursday - Steve Schurtz 6pm-10pm Friday - Steve Moore and MIA 6:30-10:30pm Saturday - Big Daddy Duo 6pm - 10pm Sunday - Keith Hickman 5pm - 9pm

f you’re from the Fairmount neighborhood in Philadelphia, you may know a group called 7 Points of Nowhere. But I changed their name — I call them “The Goats of Fairmount.” These guys sing, play instruments, and do the oldies like you’ve never heard before. They are legendary in Fairmount, and when they play at Memories in Margate on Sunday, June 22, after we do our Geator, Frank, and Friends show on WOND 1400, you’ll agree: They’re a hoot. Meanwhile, Memories is hot: nothing but stars from all over the country, including the return of Ed and Linda, Carlos and Vicki, Aaron and Dawn, Carl and Peggy, and the Mighty Quinn. And I don’t have to tell you, we’re going to begin our Fourth of July celebration early, starting Sunday, June 29, when the Sensational Soul Cruisers take the stage at Memories, and we’ll continue right through the Geator’s and Uncle Sam’s big birthday bash. More about that next week — right now, let’s get down to business and ask the Geator. It was 42 years ago today (June 10) when Sammy Davis Jr. topped the charts with “Candy Man” in 1972. What is your favorite Sammy Davis Jr. role or song? (Wendy Harris, Warminster, Pa.) — I would have to name two favorites: “Lonely is the Name,” composed by Bert Kaempfert, and “The Shelter of Your Arms” by Jerry Samuels — whom you may remember as a performer who called himself Napoleon XIV and recorded the novelty hit “They’re Coming to Take Me Away.” And here’s a great trivia question: Bert Kaempfert composed many famous tunes. How many can you name? Hint: Frank Sinatra, Al Martino, and Wayne Newton had their biggest hits with three of them.

A couple years ago while visiting the Jersey Shore, my wife and I came by Memories with the intention of going in that night. When my wife saw some ladies all dressed up, she felt intimidated and wouldn’t go in. My wife was dressed quite nicely, may I add! The next time we’re up in New Jersey in the summer we will come. (Joseph M., Urbanna, Virginia) — It’s true that Saturday night is a going-out night out where people dress to dine and then come to Memories and dance. But generally the Jersey shore is very casual, and you’ll find that even at Memories the dress code is has become much more relaxed over the past couple of years. Our only basic rule is no hats, no tank tops, and for safety reasons, no sandals or flip-flops. Jerry, did you ever hear about Bandstand getting started in Norristown, Pa.? There is a Norristown group on Facebook — can you set them straight about this argument? (Joey Mo, Santa Barbara, Ca.) — Bandstand began at 46th and Market Streets in Philadelphia in 1952 with original hosts Bob Horn and Lee Stewart. Bob, who was living in Camden at the time, had been hosting a radio show called C’mon and Dance and came up with the idea of a televised dance party, almost like the radio show The 950 Club, as a way to bring the music he was playing to a wider audience. He took the idea to WFIL in Philadelphia, and the rest is history. Because of Bandstand’s popularity, a lot of local dance parties used the same theme; maybe one took place at the Norristown bandstand in Elmwood Park and that’s how the rumor got started. (Trivia answer: Bert Kaempfert composed the music for “Strangers in the Night,” “Danke Shoen,” and “Spanish Eyes.”) n Got a question for Jerry? Write AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. More info on Jerry’s appearances is at www.geator.net.

hen Steve Martorano insists that “I’m not a chef, I’m a cook serving neighborhood comfort food,” he isn’t just being humble. Instead, he’s making a statement of personal identity as someone who has experienced more in 56 years than most folks encounter in a lifetime. Already owner/operator of three successful restaurants — an original in Fort Lauderdale, another in nearby Hollywood, Florida, and a third in Las Vegas — the ripped, rugged former Philadelphian has grand aspirations in 2014. Among them: opening a Martorano’s at Harrah’s Atlantic City sometime in July before shooting for another Vegas venue in October. This is pretty ambitious stuff for a guy who began in the business by hawking sandwiches from a South Philly basement 30 years ago. “Why I’m more excited about this is because, in my personal opinion, there is not a place down the shore in Ocean City, Wildwood or Atlantic City where you can get my kind of food,” says Martorano, whose Harrah’s site will take the place of the space formerly housing Luke Palladino’s. By “my kind of food,” he means cuisine like escarole and beans, crab and macaroni in red gravy, and a house signature — “world famous” meatballs alone or paired with salad as an appetizer. “It’s all about the red-wine vinegar,” Martorano says of those multiple-meat mounds, adding that after frying until nice and crusty, they get slowly finished in a bath of hearty “Sunday gravy,” another Martorano specialty and no ordi-

Bill’s Bar and Burger Strategically positioned near the casino floor, a wide, airy space provides plenty of seating options. One of A.C.’s best burgers, too, judging from a recent sampling: a kick-ass jalapeno version with sliced chiles, pico de gallo, chipotle aioli and pepper jack.

Sammy D’s Like a diner on steroids, this casual eatery presents multiple menus for breakfast, dinner and cocktails, located just steps away from The Pool. Portions are plentiful as witnessed by the XXXL BLTA, loaded with mass quantities of bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado on a toasted country loaf.

McCormick and Schmicks One of A.C.’s better seafood salons. Plenty of freshly caught fish including wild king salmon, Alaskan halibut and Atlantic Cod. It has a terrific happy hour menu, too, with 10 options including Baja fish tacos and firecracker shrimp among them for all under $7 bucks. —F.G.

nary marinara sauce. Other plates Atlantic City diners should anticipate on the bill of fare are an eggplant stack starter layered with homemade mozzarella; marinated tomatoes, arugula and shaved Parmigiano Reggiano; chicken with peppers in a San Marzano tomato-based sauce; Chicken Sicilian featuring cherry peppers and olives in butter sauce; and classic standards like shrimp scampi, fried calamari, linguine with white clam sauce, and fusilli pollo. To understand how seriously Martorano takes this new venture one need only look at the veteran management team convened to help open the Atlantic City site. Included are Nick Loguidice, Café Martorano’s general manager; Walter Pytel, Martorano’s head chef; Joseph Vargas and Edwin Seggara of the Hard Rock Café; and Arturo Moscoso and Nikki Shirokow of Martorano’s Las Vegas property. A final member of his crew, however, just might be the most crucial; his fiancée Marsha Daley. Native to Trelawney, Jamaica, Daley works in multiple capacities. “If it wasn’t for her to organize entirely and help me focus, none of this stuff I could do,” he says. A final barometer of the commitment to make this work in A.C. is his willingness to truck in specific ingredients sourced from across the Delaware. Look for Sarcone’s Bakery bread and pastries from Isgro’s and the Termini Brothers, the latter responsible for creating world’s finest “sfogliatelle” — a clamshaped Neapolitan delight whose name translates as “small leaves or layers.” Martorano’s won’t be just a restaurant either. Sometime after 9pm it will morph into an upscale night club, the owner himself stepping in to work the DJ booth regularly. Promising a “Philly old school mix” he allows that tabletop dancing will — at least for ladies — be not just tolerated, but encouraged. All of this seem apropos for a man who, despite his travels, has never really left home. As Martorano himself definitively states, “I never forgot who I am and where I came from.” n
