EDITOR’S NOTE
BY STEPHEN SEGAL
B IS FOR — WELL, YOU KNOW tRIBUtE BAnDS ARE An AWESomE thInG Growing up as a young nerd, I had a tendency to engage in what the kids today call “cosplay” — that is, getting dressed on a semi-regular basis in the sorts of outfits that my heroes would wear. Since my heroes were, you know, Mr. Spock and Doctor Who, that meant a lot of blue V-necks and 12-foot-long scarves. People thought that made me eccentric — but I never understood why, since ritually donning the garb of our icons is something that almost everybody does. Football fans wear team jerseys with players’ names and numbers; young music fans take their style cues from pop stars — seriously, everybody does this. And speaking of pop music, one of the most delightful ways human beings pay homage to their favorite cultural figures is to actually get on stage and do what their heroes do. You know — tribute bands! This week, the Golden Nugget gives us four straight days of rock tributes: “Fakefest,” running July 10–13, features performances by not-quite Bon Jovis, Aerosmiths, Hendrixes and — of course — the world’s greatest not-quite-Springsteen act, the B Street Band (pictured). he American Historic Racing Motorcycle Associa-tion Ltd. will host the second annual Vintage Motorcycle Festival at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville Friday through Sunday, July 11-13. The vintage roadracing bikes, as featured in all AHRMA’s events, span 50 years from the 1920s to the early ’70s. Tickets are $10 for Friday, $15 for Saturday and Sunday, and free for children 12 and under. Two- and threeday tickets are also available. Get tickets by going to njmp.com or by calling 856327-7256. The festival will also feature over 50 vendors and three days of seminars, live music, a swap meet and classic motorcycle racing on the 2.25-mile Thunderbolt Raceway circuit. For more, visit dev.ahrma.org. The Stanley Cup, the most prized trophy in the sport of professional hockey — some would say in all of professional sports — will make its way to the lobbies of Harrah’s and Caesars on Thursday and Friday, July 17-18. The viewing event is free and open to the public, and will also feature special-guest appearances by
members of the 2014 Cup-winning Los Angeles Kings, including associate head coach John Stevens (Thursday) and MVP Justin Williams (Friday). Fans will have an opportunity to take photos alongside the famous trophy and see the Kings’ team members Thursday at Harrah’s Lobby from 3:30-5pm, and Friday at Caesars Lobby from 4-6pm. The event will also include the Clarence S. Campbell Western Conference Trophy and the Conn Smyth MVP Award won this year by Williams. Alex DePhillipo and the creators of Dark Fall — the award-winning documentary that followed a year in the life of many of New Jersey’s best surfers — will host the premier of their latest movie venture called Death 2 Hipsters on Thursday, July 17, at The Showroom at Golden Nugget. Death 2 Hipsters is described as an “outrageous surf comedy without a synopsis — because synopses are too mainstream and that’s just NOT KEWL.” See the film’s trailer and purchase tickets at death2hipsters.com. This premiere includes a free T-shirt, poster, and free admission to Golden Nugget’s Haven Nightclub. n

one man’s tale Cha z z Palminteri Pl ays all 19 Char aCter s in his true-to - life ‘Bronx tale .’
D
Palminteri had already turned down a million-dollar offer to sell the rights to A Bronx Tale when he was still performing the show in Los Angeles. But once DeNiro expressed his interest, Palminteri was more receptive to the idea. Still, he wasn’t willing to hand over the film rights to the play without a little something extra besides the money. He wanted to write the screenplay for any movie version of his show. He also wanted a part in the movie to help jump-start his screen acting career. In 1993, the film version of A Bronx Tale, directed by and starring DeNiro playing opposite Palminteri, made its debut. Today, a quarter-century after he wrote the play out of desperation, Palminteri is known more for his work in TV (Modern Family) and film (Analyze This) than he is on the live stage. Still, he finds time to occasionally go out and perform A Bronx Tale, which he’ll do Saturday night at the Golden Nugget. “I love doing the show because it’s a part of me,” the 62-year-old actor said. “This is what Robert DeNiro saw; this is how I became a star.” Playing all 19 characters in the show may sound like the ultimate challenge for an actor, but Palminteri said it’s easy for him because he not only wrote each character, but he actually knew them. Still, he needs to pay attention and not get too complacent during the show, because sometimes three or four of his characters are carrying on a conversation. Palminteri admitted his life could have gone in one of several directions, and not all of them were good. But he credited his parents for steering him down life’s better path. “My mom and dad really gave me a strong foundation and my father always said the saddest thing in life is wasted talent. He said, ‘If you want to be something, don’t make stupid mistakes.’ And I guess I made the right choices.” n

esperate times call for desperate measures. And things were pretty desperate for an out-of-work actor and freshly fired nightclub bouncer who lost his gig when he refused to let Hollywood super-agent swifty lazar into his own party. So Chazz Palminteri — who didn’t know where his next meal was coming from — sat down and proceeded to write a play about growing up in the Bronx, where his life was influenced and mentored by heroes and villains. On the good side were people like his working-class dad, who was a city bus driver, or the cop on the corner. The dark side of the street was populated by Mob-connected wise guys who ran the local numbers racket, broke a few legs and — when it was necessary — even rubbed a few people out. Palminteri knew what it was like to see someone get whacked; he was just 11 when he witnessed a mob hit while he was sitting on the front stoop of his brownstone on Belmont Avenue near 187th Street. So he had plenty of building blocks to help create the story that emerged and was titled A Bronx Tale. “The impetus (to write) was desperation,” Palminteri said. “I had credits as an actor, but I ran out of money like any stage actor does. I couldn’t find the right parts for me, so I decided if they won’t give me a great part, I’d write one myself.” But there’s a wide gap between writing a great part for yourself and then actually getting to see it made into either a profitable stage show and movie. Palminteri wrote 19 different characters into the play, and he played every one of them when his one-man show opened in Los Angeles in 1990. The show eventually moved to New York and had a critically acclaimed and commercially successful off-Broadway run. And that’s when robert Deniro entered the picture. The Oscar-winning actor saw the play and wanted to adapt it as a motion picture. DeNiro not only wanted to star in the movie, but he wanted to use the film for his directorial debut.

or our living memory, brewing has been a man’s game. In a land of beards and football, beer has been produced by men, for men. But it wasn’t always this way. Beer once was a drink for the family, the liquid bread of the table. It was clean, safe drinking water and packed full of nutritional goodness. The men drank it. The women drank it. Even the children drank it. Women didn’t just drink it, though — for much of beer’s 10,000-year life, they also brewed it. The liquid bread was such an important part of the daily diet that it was included with the rest of the domestic duties. The Sumerians valued the skill of brewers so highly, men eventually were prohibited from even making it. It was when brewing shifted into the professional sphere that women began to drop out. Beer eventually saw less prominence in meals and became an industry where there was money to be made. By the 19th century, the industry had been taken over by men, and the presence of women in brewing had virtually disappeared. Things are changing. Women are returning to a sector that once was theirs, and they are bringing a lot of fresh ideas with them. New flavors are popping up, and at the head of many breweries stand women. Beer writer Melissa Cole suggests that having women wait until now to reenter the brewing world may be a good thing. She said, “Men can be tied to the more traditional way of doing things. Women are thinking out of the boring, brown, bitter box. We’re not forever going down the hoppier, stronger route.” This is not to suggest that breweries have ignored women, it’s just that the beers they’ve come up with lead one to question if they’ve ever met a woman. It wasn’t that long ago that Molson released a beer-wine hybrid in three flavors — rose, clear filtered and zesty lemon — marketed specifically to attract women. The problem was, the beer was terrible and was pulled from production a year after introduction. A few years ago, a study was released in which one out of three women stated that drinking from a pint glass is unfeminine. Over a third of females in their 20’s said they would drink beer more often if it was served in a more stylish glass. Perhaps something with a long stem and smallish cone? Frankly, I don’t think women are wrong in their desire for more appropriate glassware. Men now are recognizing the drinking experience is highlighted by the appropriate vessel. Maybe some women are put off by the strong taste of some beers, the masculine image and the ugly pint glasses, but that doesn’t mean all are. There are signs that this view is just a false myth, based on assumptions from the past. Because women do drink beer — very possibly, because of craft breweries that are promoting their products based on flavors. They’ve chosen to target beer drinkers in general, as opposed to segments, and it’s attracting men and women in droves. n
Gary monterosso is an award-winning writer and noted expert on craft beer and brewing. His second book, 101 Great Session Beers (and More), is available for download at amazon.com. He’ll be participating in the “blues, brews and bbQ” event at bally’s beach Tent on July 26 from noon to 3pm, featuring some fantastic brews available along with a guest appearance from Chef robert Irvine.

this Monday, July 14, when we kick off the 139th annual Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Hammonton. Once again, thanks to all who helped make this weekend a very special one. And if you weren’t with us, we hope you had a happy and safe weekend. Now, let’s ask the Geator. I moved to Tucson almost two years ago. I haven’t heard good music since I’ve been here. Today I went to a place called Frankie’s for a real Philly steak sandwich, and Frankie told me he listens to you on the radio every day. So give me a hint at to where I can find the Geator in Tucson! I want to remember my Sundays and Wednesdays at Wagner’s Ballroom. (Joey Hogan, Tucson, AZ) — You can hear all my radio shows seven days a week via the Internet, including The Geator, Frank, and Friends, which we broadcast every Sunday from noon to 2pm on WOND 1400 News Talk Radio here in Atlantic City. To check air times and stations, go to my page geator.net and click on RADIO SCHEDULE . Our friend Ed Weigle writes: “WOND 1400 streams on iPhones. That’s how I listen here in Venice, Florida. Download the free TuneIn radio app and you’ll be in business.” I’ve noticed over the years, and especially when I listen to The Geator, Frank and Friends and you play different versions of the same song, that Sammy Davis Jr.’s arrangements are never as interesting as Sinatra’s. Could you comment on that? (R.S., Fort Lauderdale) — You have to understand that Frank came from the big band era and therefore was much more into the music than Sammy, who was number one an entertainer — singer, dancer, actor, and personality. Frank’s approach was always more about the song, and he was always involved in the sound and orchestration of everything he sang, much more so than Sammy, who was the consummate performer. n

reetings and salutations — and every year it happens, and every year we say it was the best ever. But truly, this Fourth of July celebration, which began on Thursday, July 3 and went all weekend long, was bombastic not only for the Geator and Memories but for everybody up and down the Jersey coast. Even Arthur couldn’t dampen the celebration or the partying spirit. Even though in some areas the fireworks had to be postponed till later, people still flocked to the shore. Over at Memories, what can I say? Nothing but stars. Some of the people who made it for the Geator’s birthday bash over the weekend; the Admiral and his wife, Linda; The Three Amigos with Anthony’s folks; Dr. A.J. DiMarino, head of gastroenterology at Jefferson, taking to the dance floor with his lovely wife, Dottie, along with Ed Snider and his lovely wife Lin, who had more moves on the dance floor than some of his players on the Flyers. Builder Jeff Orleans, Frank and Suzy Binswanger, Judge Webb Keogh, Peter De Paul, lawyers Carmen Nasuti and Carl Poplar, Judge Fortunato Perri and the gang from Longport, and Chuck Peruto Jr., who came in from Avalon with some of the QVC models. Even Joe Ligambi, Congressman Bob Brady, and the lovely Ruth Arnao and Mitch Rubin were there to help celebrate. And from the world of entertainment, Mr. Personality, Stagger Lee himself, Lloyd Price, shared the booth with the Geator and DJ Joel. From the world of sports, quarterback Rich Gannon and his lovely wife, Shelley. As you know, Rich went to St. Joe’s Prep and played for the Oakland Raiders when they went to the Super Bowl in 2003. And Dan Gross, who couldn’t be there, wished the Geator a happy birthday by text. All sang happy birthday and all were amazed when the Geator blew out all of the candles in one shot. Thank goodness they couldn’t fit all 74 candles on the cake, but you had at least 25. Following that, the big news is the big switch this week to Tuesday Happy hours at the Golden Nugget, and we’ll be outside on the Deck at the marina for the rest of the summer. Also this week we resume our Thursday night dance parties at the Lighthouse Pointe in Wildwood. And don’t forget to join us

ichael Bublé has it all. Fans pack arenas to catch the suave big-band vocalist’s shows; he’s married to one of the most beautiful women in the world, and they have a newborn son. What more could the charming singer, who’ll perform Saturday at Boardwalk Hall, want? In a conversation with Atlantic City Weekly, Bublé reveals his dream career, waxes philosophic about music, and details his massive upcoming production.
Rat Pack era. I love that style. I love the sounds from that period. It’s just magical. It just resonated with me — and I went with it. I have no regrets. I love how those singers from that era connected with the audience. It was a beautiful thing.

white vermouth and finished with grana padana cheese. Another delightful app: deviled eggs, a house specialty also sourced from Beach Plum. This halved trio consisted of one with avocado, tomato and crab, another with prosciutto and chimichurri sauce (our favorite) and a third with shaved black truffle. My main course, a most unusual cut of lamb sirloin, presented as six broad, hearty slices turbaned about a mound of chile-garlic spinach. Twin discs of eggplant croquette provided additional veggie garnish, all organized atop a pale golden saffron aioli. Red-pepper-infused lamb jus was layered just beyond, creating cool color contrast. The meat, lustfully grilled very rare, gloriously red within, arrived exactly as requested. My dining partner opted for another outof-the-ordinary menu item: barramundi. A sweet, clean white fish, Australian in origin, this sea bass, unlike its Chilean/Patagonian cousin, is not in danger of extinction due to over-fishing, which makes it an envi-
ronmentally conscious choice as well. The golden filet arrived tilted jauntily above a mosh of sweet corn blended with leek and beech mushroom ragout, gently doused with a grilled tomato vinaigrette. On dessert special was an exemplary chocolate trio: a spoonful of ice cream, a triangular truffle with pretzel shavings and a mini-brownie adorned by candied orange peel. On the non-chocolate side of things, sticky toffee pudding—the modern British classic based on sponge cake—was perhaps a bit too dense for our liking, but we still enjoyed the decadent toffee sauce and house-made vanilla ice cream that accessorized. We also sampled a fig-and-agave ice cream, so amazing it deserves to be a regular feature. Possessing fruity flavor along with the divine sweetness of tequila’s mother plant, this complex masterpiece’s balance was alluring. (Note: Newly installed as executive chef at the Ebbitt Room, whose kitchen still bears the distinct footprint of past leaders, is Matthew Crist, a native Philadelphian. Crist’s culinary career began at 43 Degrees North in Portsmouth, N.H.; in 2006, he opened his own barbeque restaurant in nearby Manchester to national acclaim. Most recently, he’s served as executive chef of Union City Grille in Wilmington, Del.) n

The Concord Café, one of Avalon’s most popular year-round restaurants, also marks a 25th anniversary in 2014. The Barnabei family, owners of North Wildwood’s North End American grill and Wildwood Crest’s Marie Nicole’s, first launched the popular eatery as a packaged goods store that later evolved into a family restaurant. A destination for American pub food — sandwiches, pizzas, burgers and salads — the Concord also features dinner specials ranging from seafood to Italian classics each night during the summer. “We’re proud to be celebrating 25 years in business,“ says co-founder and owner Jim Barnabei. “This was my first venture into Cape May County restaurants, and I’m happy to see how it’s grown into a popular Jersey shore mainstay.” The Concord Café is a perfect destination for families looking for a satisfying meal after a long day at the beach. The restaurant is open seven days a week, 11:30am to midnight Monday through Saturday, and noon to midnight on Sunday. —F.g.

ape May’s culinary scene, once the envy of the East Coast, has largely transitioned from fine dining to casual, family-oriented fare. A notable exception to that statement remains the Ebbitt Room: the Virginia Hotel’s timeless space fronted by a magnificent entryway and breezy front porch. One way the Ebbitt’s been ahead of the curve over its 25-year history is its close working relationship with Beach Plum Farms. The 60-plus-acre operation, which provides many of the restaurant’s vegetable, fruit and herbal ingredients, sits just miles away. Lots of eateries claim farm-toplate; Ebbitt’s is the local standard. We began a recent evening meal with the Beach Plum Farm salad, a pretty, colorful conglomeration of mixed lettuces, sliced strawberries and sunflower seeds topped with ribbons of shaved Manchego cheese. Adorned with light, straightforward herb vinaigrette, the brimming bowl of impeccable greens earned top billing. My heirloom tomato salad, presented horizontally on a long, narrow plate, brought five slices of psychedelic yellow tomato, adorned by roasted blueberries, crushed pistachios and honey-goat cheese dressing. The berries proved a captivating addition, their flavors intensified through the clever cooking process; they literally exploded with tartness, adding lovely contrast to the sweet tomato. Our best plate of this night might have been a hot appetizer of strozzapretti pasta. The thick, twirling tubes — “priest stranglers” in Italian — were delightfully sauced with a hearty combine of duck bacon, spin-

Hurt), who has launched failed rebellions in the past. His second-in command is Curtis (Chris Evans), who’s reluctant to take over the leadership role as a final uprising is planned. However, when the liaison to the front of the train, Mason (Tilda Swinton, unrecognizable with a fake nose and buck teeth) arrives with her goon squad of soldiers and takes away the five-year-old son (Marcanthonee Jon Reis) of Tanya (Octavia Spencer), his reluctance disappears. Curtis’ ragtag bunch, including his best friend Edgar (Jamie Bell), surge forward car by car, stopping to liberate the dope-addled engineer (Kang-ho Song) who will help them open the locks in exchange for a fix of Kronol. As this claustrophobic class warfare goes forward, it reveals more horrifying details of just how little is left of humanity: Empathy and kindness no longer exist in this existential nightmare, where even the hero is revealed to have a monstrous, inhumane secret. Director Joon-ho Bong co-wrote the screenplay with Kelly Masterson (Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead) and his vision of a particularly hellish dystopian nightmare masterfully avoids the clichés of the genre and presents a fresh take on where our world could be headed. Suddenly zombies, nukes or a global pandemic don’t seem nearly as devastating as a train ride to nowhere.

nowpiercer has added to what has been an intriguing summer at the movies. While it has supplied us with a higher than usual percentage of remakes and sequels (Captain Avenger: The Winter Soldier; The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Godzilla, 22 Jump Street, Transformers: Age of Extinction), it has also provided an eclectic collection of alternative cinema — what action fans dismiss as art house movies. Some of these lovely palate-cleansers have
included a look at a biracial woman raised in 18th-century England (Belle); a World War II prison-camp survivor haunted by his past (The Railway Man); a chef who finds his passion for food again while bonding with his son (Chef); and the deadly open road in the Australian Outback after a global financial collapse (The Rover). n

nowpiercer is a film that just might haunt you. It offers us a terrifying glimpse into a post-Apocalyptic future where the last humans on earth circle the globe in a train surrounded by a frozen wasteland. An icy global freeze was the central theme in the likable The Day After Tomorrow, but Snowpiercer goes way beyond the Hollywood notion of that end-of-the-world theme and into a new realm that suggests that survival means losing one’s soul. Directed and co-written by acclaimed Korean director Joon-ho Bong (The Host), the film is based on a 1982 French graphic novel, Le Transperceneige. The deep freeze, we learn, came about when a solution for global warming went horribly wrong. The only survivors live on a train that circles the globe. This massive, 500-car beast of the rails has taken the class system to a grotesque level: The cars at the back are filled with the 99-percenters, who live in squalor and are fed with nasty looking black protein bars. From there, the caste system takes us to cars at the front of the train, where the elite live as if the world hasn’t changed. Other cars feature an aquarium providing fresh fish for the sushi car and a greenhouse car — and later on, we find the party car, where the DJ is pumping up the volume for a crowd blissfully ignorant of life beyond their protected world thanks to the manufactured opiate of choice, Kronol. The leader of the end cars is Gilliam (John
