EDITOR’S NOTE
BY STEPHEN SEGAL
STAIRWAY TO KEVIN somE pEopLE just KInd of roCK . KEvIn bACon Is onE of thEm . I mean, I don’t have to tell you about his acting chops. The guy has rocked so hard, in so many movies, that his name has become the commonly accepted unit of measurement to analyze how connected you are to anyone else in Hollywood. That in itself is amazing. But Kevin Bacon literally rocks, too — and this week, the Philly native is doing it here at the Jersey shore, playing a Monday, July 21 show at the Ocean City Music Pier with his fraternal band, the Bacon Brothers. You’re gonna want to be there — and not because Kevin Bacon is a famous actor, but because the band conjures sweet, roots-rock melodies flavored with mandolins, Hammond organs, accordions, cellos and all sorts of other funky instrumental goodness. he ever-popular Night in Venice Boat Parade — one of the largest parades of its kind in the world — will be held for the 60th summer in Ocean City on Saturday, July 26. While participants are primarily from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, past participants have included boats from up and down the East Coast. The parade begins at 7:30pm at the Longport Bridge and continues along back bays to Tennessee Avenue. Prizes will be awarded for not only the best-decorated boats, but also waterfront homes and condos along the parade route. There will be live music by the Good Tymes Band from 5:45-7:45pm and various children’s activities. Viewing is free and grandstand seating will be available at the Bayside Center (5th Street and Bay Avenue) for a $7 fee ($3 for children 12 and under). Grandstand tickets can be purchased at the Community Services office (room 214) at City Hall, or at the Ocean City Music Pier Box Office. The fourth annual Atlantic City Caribbean Carnival Weekend is Friday through Sunday, July 18-20. The carnival kicks off with the Miss Caribbean New Jersey/Miss Atlantic City Caribbean Carnival Pageant on Friday at 9pm followed by the Glow Party at the Howard Johnson, located at 8029 Black Horse Pike in West A.C., at
10:30pm. Tickets for the party are $10. The parade is noon-4pm Saturday, beginning at Rhode Island and Atlantic avenues in front of Revel. It will be led by Miss Caribbean United States along with performers donned in various Caribbean carnival costumes and dancing to Caribbean sounds. Vendors will provide authentic Caribbean food and drink. The after-party will be at the Howard Johnson featuring Caribbean superstar Destra Garcia. Tickets are $25 for the concert and $10 for Saturday’s after party, which begins around midnight. On Sunday, from 11am-3pm, is a Caribbean brunch and swimwear/resort wear/ costume wear fashion show at Howard Johnson. Visit accarnival.com for more. The Gardner’s Basin free summer concert series continues Saturday, July 19, with Morris Day and the Time. The free music starts 1pm with Morris Day taking the stage around 5:30pm. The Gardner’s Basin amphitheater is located at 800 N. New Hampshire Avenue in Atlantic City. Morris Day hit the music scene as a musical co-star with Prince in the hit movie Purple Rain, and is still cranking out his infectious dance music. Renowned for his zoot-suit inspired fashions, Day will likely be performing such hits as “Get It Up,” “Jerk Out,” “Gigolos Get Lonely Too” and “Cool.” n

ith Atlantic City in the middle of one of its biggest entertainment seasons ever — just check out the casino showroom schedules between now and Labor Day — it’s worth noting that the resort is developing some quality productions beyond the gaming hall venues. The newest addition to the city’s growing arts community is the Atlantic City Theater, a theatrical troupe that’s developed in conjunction with the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey’s Dante Hall Theater on Mississippi Avenue. The company, which presented its debut production with the comedy The Sunshine Boys in May, presents its second show when the curtain rises Friday on the comedydrama Steel Magnolias, which runs through July 27. The show was adapted from writer and director Robert Harling’s 1987 play that had a three-year off-Broadway run that ended in 1990 after more than 1,100 performances. It returned to New York in 2005 for a limited Broadway run of less than four months. The Broadway production of Harling’s original play featured Delta Burke, Marsha Mason and Christine Ebersole. As a successful motion picture, the film featured an ensemble cast including Sally
Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts.

Unlike some self-contained theatrical productions that visit the region with touring actors, the Atlantic City Theater’s production is strictly a homegrown affair. Deborah Jenkins of Beesley’s Point, who founded the Shaken Not Stirred Players and has appeared in shows like Footloose, Brigadoon and South Pacific, is a member of Steel Magnolias’ ensemble cast. Joining her are Andrea Zakheim of Margate (Anything Goes and The Sunshine Boys), Deborah Pruitt of Marmora (Nunsense, Grease, Hello Dolly), Victoria Page Biron of Egg Harbor Township (Glass Menagerie, Arsenic and Old Lace), Jennifer Smith of Atlantic City (Play It Again Sam, Blythe Spirit) and Taylor Cawley of Cape May Court House (Much Ado About Nothing, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee). Patricia Herron, a founder of both the
Atlantic City Theater and the Fool Moon Theater, will direct the play, drawing on her extensive experience as an actress, producer and director for more than 35 theatrical productions in southern New Jersey. Steel Magnolias took shape in 1985 when Harling’s sister, Susan, died of complications related to diabetes. A friend who was a writer suggested he write about the experience to help him gain some closure and also to give his nephew a little more insight into who and what kind of a person his mother was. Harling wrote the story and kept on writing. Ten days later, something emerged, but the author wasn’t quite sure what it was. “The events that inspired it were so powerful that, after I found the story arena, it just poured out into my typewriter in a 24/7 tsunami of Southernness,” Harling said during a 2012 interview with Garden & Gun Magazine. “I had no idea what I’d written. I asked the first person I gave it to if it even looked like a play. I wasn’t really sure. All I knew was that I felt it portrayed my sister’s life and spirit accurately, and that was enough for me.” Not a complete stranger to show business — Harling sang with a big band while he was in college — he still wasn’t prepared for the groundswell effect that occurred when the show became an instant off-Broadway hit. “With the buzz around the play in New York, there was a constant stream from Hollywood coming to check it out. (Producer) Ray Stark bought the rights and promised me he’d film it in my hometown of Natchitoches, La., which really clinched the deal,” he said. “Almost every actress in the biz came to the theater to see it. They had to shut down the street the night Elizabeth Taylor came, the crowds were so large. I had tea with Bette Davis, who wanted to play Ouiser. The movie had premieres in Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York, and Natchitoches. That was a surreal week.” n

hose who witnessed the total transformation of what would become the Golden Nugget were likely awed as much by how it all happened as a still-functioning hotel/casino as by the remarkable final product. There was little not to like. In the eyes of many, though, parent company Landry’s saved the best for last when the sprawling state-of-the-art nightclub Haven was unveiled Memorial Day weekend 2013. The club quickly became a favorite among primarily 20-somethings looking for a fun night out, incorporating an open-format blend that continues to bring in soughtafter, special-guest DJs who span the gamut of dance-music genres. Landry’s spared no expense in converting what for years was an underground bus terminal into the 12,000-square-foot Haven, bedecking it with a Function One sound and cutting-edge lighting systems, a Kryogenifex liquid nitrogen special-effects
system, a gigantic LED video wall, two fullservice bars, kiosks that double as social media-based photo booths, and a centrally located dance floor surrounded by 25 leather banquettes that offer hostess and VIP bottle service. A secluded component called The Veranda lets guests take a break from the frenzy and, if so inclined, try their luck at roulette, blackjack or slots. (Local firm SOSH Architects, whose specialty is the gaming, hospitality and entertainment industry, created the Haven design.) This week’s schedule at Haven features Jerzy, that rare beast who’s both a radio DJ and a club DJ, on Thursday, July 17; Beatport-top-10-charting artist Tony Arzadon on Friday, July 18; and bicoastal producer/DJ Steve Powers on Saturday, July 19. Haven claimed six Atlantic City Weekly Reader’s Choice Nightlife Awards in March, including 2014 Best Nightclub. n

Cool Cha zz THE ‘BRoNx TALE’ STAR CuT LooSE AT MEMoRIES IN MARGATE AFTER HIS SoLD- ouT A.C. SHoW
O
nce again, greetings and salutations — and as the Dells said, “Oh, what a night!” Nothing but stars, and it gets more exciting with each and every weekend. The All-Star Game came and went, but our stars remained out. The return of Ron and Steffi Donatucci, dancing alongside the senior vice president of PNC, Sal Patti, who was celebrating his birthday along with his lovely wife Fina, along with Steve Fera, VP of Blue Cross, and his lovely wife Simone. The return of Pete and Lisa Ciarrocchi, taking to the dance floor as Mark Rago and Lou Galdo looked on in amazement. Even Jay Agnes and a whole bunch of folks from Malvern were there, as was my friend Brian Ruhling from the Buck Hotel, along with Little Sammy and their lovely wives. Plus our man Butch Fortino, Aaron and Dawn, Carl and Peggy, the Kuehnles, Herba and the gals, and too many more stars to mention. But then, as the party continued, in walked my man Chazz Palminteri, direct from his sold-out show, A Bronx Tale, at the Golden Nugget. Chazz will be the Grand Marshall of this year’s Columbus Day Parade in Philly, riding in the Geatormobile along with yours truly for the Columbus Society of 1492. What can I say? It just gets better and better. So now, let’s ask the Geator.
Recently in this column you talked about a song called “Forever” by the Vidaltones. I’ve heard you play a song called “Forever” by the Marvelettes. Is it the same song? (Louise, Cape May) — That is a completely different song from the one by the Vidaltones, which was recorded in 1962 and goes “Forever, I need your love forever, let’s make a vow . . . ” I mix the Marvelettes’ “Forever” (sometimes called “Darling Forever”) with Marvin Gaye’s 1965 cover of the same song. And here’s a trivia question for you: Both of those recordings were B sides — can you name their A sides? (Answer at the bottom of the page.)
Geator, in the winter of 1958 I saw a rock and roll show at the Tower Theater. I can only recall the Monotones. Who else performed? (Jerry S., Philadelphia) — Danny & the Juniors were on that show and, hard to believe, so was Bobby Darin before he became a superstar. As a matter of fact, if you read my book, You Only Rock Once, I talk about the fact that after the show Bobby came into Club Dahlia, where I was a member, and they wound up throwing him out because he was throwing darts all over the place. We’re coming to the shore with teens. Where can we take the family to see you? (Eileen, Clifton Heights, PA) — There are certain venues where I work that allow that. On Tuesdays at the Golden Nugget, because we’re outside on The Deck at the marina, you can certainly bring the kids. The Lighthouse Pointe in Wildwood, where we appear on Thursdays, is another venue — it has a bar and restaurant on the deck where minors are welcome. And at Memories in Margate we have the Geator Garden in the back of the club, which serves food, so you can bring the whole family there as well. Trivia answer: The Marvelettes’ “Forever,” recorded in 1963, was the B side to “Locking Up My Heart.” Marvin’s version was the B side to “How Sweet It Is.” n Got a question for Jerry? Send it by email to AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or on paper to Geator Gold Radio, 626 market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. more info on Jerry’s appearances is at www.geator.net.

How many albums did you make in your young years? Not CDs, just albums. (James Lewis, Philadelphia) — Besides producing compilation oldies albums for other disk jockeys on the Lost Nite Records label, I personally produced twelve of my own albums, and it all began in the early part of the 1960s with my first one, For Lovers Only, volume 1.
Chazz Palminteri with the Geator and his daughter Deserie on Saturday, July 12.

that? As the party winds down, sunset on the beach may be enjoyed in front of The Chelsea Hotel, too, for a romantic canoodle with whatever pretty thing you may have picked up on the dance floor. Simultaneously to the Beach Party, though, will be “Lez Volley,” the event’s fourth annual Beach Volleyball Tournament. For only $30, women can sign up and play all afternoon from noon until 4pm at the Atlantic City Beach Courts between the Showboat and Revel. Women who want to warm up first, though, can start their day with a yoga morning at 7:30am Saturday on the Sand Blast dance floor. Following that moment of sunrise zen, ladies are welcome to mix and mingle at brunch at Bungalow Bar at Boardwalk and California Avenue, to get ready for the day of dancing and volleyball ahead. As Saturday concludes, there’s the White Party at 10pm at Mixx at the Borgata, in case anyone didn’t get enough sweat, sand, and twerking earlier in the day. On Sunday, the weekend rounds out gradually with Women’s Gaming at the Borgata from 3 to 8pm, and there’s a good old-fashioned queer tea dance at the same time at the Borgata’s mur.mur nightclub. For the menz, there’s another shirtless party called Rip Tide, but this time it’s actually in a pool: the Pool at Harrah’s, that is, at 11am. DJ Ed Bailey spins for that little foray into aqua aerobics. Men there may have private cabanas; just as a reminder, what happens in the cabana stays in the cabana. Like the ladies, the men will have a traditional tea dance immediately following Rip Tide at Harrah’s. And later in the evening, the weekend closes with the Kahuna party at Dusk nightclub at Caesar’s starting at 7pm and slated to end at 4am. n

ey, who’s in the mood for an Atlantic City success story right about now? You’re in luck, because we’ve got one: Sand Blast weekend is coming to Atlantic City. The self-described largest LGBT beach party in the midAtlantic has been held in Asbury Park for 12 years running until now; as of 2014, it relocates to A.C. All told, Sand Blast promises to be one heck of a weekend — and, in all likelihood, a welcome boon to business and the city’s tourism profile along the way. After all, with gays and lesbians in the United States representing an estimated $70 billion in tourism dollars nationwide, it’s not only right to be in favor of equality — it also makes good business sense. So sorry about that, Asbury Park, but hey, y’all should come on down and do A.C. The queer circuit-party-style weekend, which is open to men and women 21+ with valid photo ID, is presented by Brad Hurtado and sponsored by the Borgata. Sand Blast officially kicks off this Friday with the “Lost at Sea” party at The Chelsea Hotel; spinning will be DJs Pornstar and Mick Hale at 7pm. Earlier in the day, though, guys and gals who just want to get their sun-and-sand groove on can hang out at the beach in front of The Claridge Hotel starting at noon. That area has been dubbed the weekend’s official “Gay Beach.” On Saturday, there’s beach volleyball, a drag race — presumably of the Ru Paul kind — and, of course, the main event: the SandBlast Beach Party 2014, a seven-hours-long beach dance party at Boardwalk and California Avenue. DJ Joe Gathreaux will spin all day long, and guests have the option of private cabanas with rooftop bottle service. How fancy is

agicians have this reputation for being super serious. It’s easy enough to understand why — the great escape artist Houdini would put his own life in danger to impress an audience; Uri Geller’s psychic tricks threatened to overturn our understand of the universe itself; and David Copperfield, well, he’s spent an awful lot of years scowling sexily while making stuff disappear. But the thing is, sometimes you want magic to be fun. You know: Penn and Teller driving nails up their nose with a hammer. The Flying Karamazov Brothers juggling mystery objects in the dark. the seemingly impossible don’t have to be endlessly awe-inspiring — and while you’re relaxing in the summer, frankly, it’s better if they’re just plain OMG awesome. We are pleased to report that Kevin & Caruso’s “Magique Encore” at the Tropicana is, indeed, OMG awesome. You’ll see aircraft materialize out of nowhere. You’ll see gorgeous ladies in sparkling costumes vanish into thin air. You’ll see a man levitate before your very eyes. And you will laugh, or you’re a person with no soul. Don’t believe us? hose of us who grew up on Absecon Island think of Lucy the Elephant as more than just a historical landmark — she’s a local personality. So it’s startling to realize that the six-story-tall elephant building, built as an architectural novelty on the Margate shore in 1881 by Philadelphia inventor James Lafferty and architect William Free, is celebrating her 133rd birthday. Saturday’s birthday celebration — running from 10am–8pm; admission is free — will feature fun attractions for the little ones, including the Big Kahuna water slide and a birthday cake moon bounce. There will also be a dunk tank and for the adventuresome, a 40-foot rock wall. Mackie the stilt walker will be on hand to greet Lucy’s friends and help celebrate her special day. New this year, the party will include a carnival midway complete with games of chance, prizes to win, and munchies like hot dogs, Philly pretzels, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, peanuts, roasted fresh Jersey corn — and a fabulous elephant birthday cake. Lucy, her staff and volunteers will all be sporting mustaches and so can you. The carnival will have a “Mustache Tent” set up

or a magical six months out of the year, our region transforms into a literal cornucopia of the world’s finest vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers. Keep in mind, New Jersey’s “Garden State” moniker doesn’t come from Essex, Bergen or Hudson counties. It’s here in southern New Jersey that we happily find ourselves at the epicenter of that garden. One of the coolest food developments of the last decade has been the proliferation of farmers’ markets in many towns. At weekly events, discriminating shoppers may Rose’s twisted Lemonade booth at purchase from an array of growers trucking margate Community Farmer’s market wares, often at great distances. So without further ado, here’s a rundown to 40 things, we would have had to include of the excitement around regional markets: Rose’s: A favorite on the regional food market/festival circuit, their libations are sweetSea Isle City, Tuesdays, 8am–1pm. Then there are the soon-to-be legendary local blends from Hank’s Hot Sauces, which sit alongside iced day boat scallops, local flounder and sea bass at another booth, gently suggesting tempting dinner options. Margate, Thursdays, 8:30am–noon. Philanthropic business maven Cookie Till hosts a market on the parking lot of her bayfront bastion Steve and Cookie’s. Margate’s size is smallest, but in keeping with the town’s posh profile, is also the most upscale and diverse. While we didn’t visit, thanks to an epic maelstrom of rain this past week, we always immediately seek out the ethereal baked goods of S&C’s gifted pastry chef, Kim Richmond. In addition to itinerant farm providers, expect to see lots of local businesses: Formica Breads, Harry and Beans fair trade coffees, Ventnor soup savants Ladle of Luv, Egg Harbor Township organic specialists Jah’s Creation, salad dressings from neighboring Tomatoes, plus splendid day-boat scallops, harvested and delivered by Viking Village fisheries of Barnegat.
Wildwood, Saturdays. 8:30am–1pm. 3501 Pacific Avenue. Held through Aug. 30, the market features farm goods, baked goods, coffee, wine, specialty foods, family entertainment and more. Joseph A. Italiano, one of southern New Jersey’s most iconic restaurateurs, passed away Saturday, July 5, at age 80. A Navy cook during the Korean War, he went on to help build an empire that at one point included four eateries under the esteemed Maplewood brand. His flagship in Hammonton remains nothing short of sacred soil for food folk. Italiano’s enduring culinary legacy may be seen on menus of any local restaurant serving seafood and pasta in white sauce. Nobody did it hereabouts before, and we don’t expect anyone will ever do it better. Joe, you will be missed. —F.G.

BENEATH THE SERIOUS SCI-FI SCENARIO OF ‘DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES,’ SOME SILLINESS LURKS BY LORI HOFFMAN

of the apes have picked up some very human bad habits, including political in fighting. Caesar, the alpha male of this pack, wants to leave the humans alone. Koba (Toby Kebbell), who was tortured by humans as a laboratory test animal, wants to wipe out the humans and a mutiny is brewing. Meanwhile, the humans left in San Francisco are looking for a power source and venture into the woods to restart a power plant, led by Malcolm (Jason Clarke) and Ellie (Keri Russell). This leads to a power play by Koba, which is when Dawn feels most like a parody that could be titled “Apes with Guns.” While played straight, the silliness is there bubbling under the surface of the story, and there are
a few holes in the plot. For example the apes learn how to shoot the guns, but these weapons seem to have an endless supply of bullets. We never see them learning how to reload. Despite the silliness factor, Andy Serkis is once again brilliant as Caesar. His eyes tell everything we need to know about Caesar: his compassion for both simians and humans, his capacity to love, his anger when provoked and his understanding that a war is inevitable. Keppell also adds a nice touch as the mutinous Koba, whose rage against humans cannot be controlled. The humans take a back seat in the story although both Clarke and Russell have a couple of nice human-simian moments with Caesar. Gary Oldman is also on hand as the

“Koba” of the human colony, wishing to kill all the apes. Directed by Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield) and written by the original Rise team, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver with Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a movie that walks a tightrope between serious and silly and never completely loses its balance despite a few shaky moments up on the wire. n

awn of the Planet of the Apes carries forward the world-building that was begun in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, providing an explanation of how a simian takeover of the earth would lead to the dark future that Charlton Heston confronted in the original Planet of the Apes. (The less said about the 2001 remake starring Mark Wahlberg, the better.) Dawn is a nice continuation of the premise established in Rise: a scientific experiment created smarter apes that have the capacity to knock human beings a rung down on the evolutionary ladder. It’s surprisingly effective, even if the concept is a bit hard to swallow, because everyone in the cast plays it straight despite the fact that at moments it feels like a Mad Magazine parody. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set ten years later in San Francisco. A global epidemic has wiped out millions of humans; those remaining are struggling to survive. Caesar (Andy Serkis), the chimpanzee who was the test subject for the brain upgrade — and proved to be an apt pupil — has established a colony of evolving simians in the woods nearby. They are thriving, but some
