SPEEDIER DELIVERY HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY, A .C . EXPRESSWAY It might seem like such a mundane fact of life that it’s scarcely worth making a fuss over — but, really, what would our lives be like without the Atlantic City Expressway, which turns 50 years old this week? Heck, not long after it was constructed, it was already such a profound new way of getting around the entire region that it helped inspire superstar songwriters Gamble & Huff to write the classic soul tune “Expressway to Your Heart,” a big hit for regional favorites the Soul Survivors. (That horn riff alone would be worth celebrating.) So it’s not so weird that, on Thursday, July 31, an Expressway-themed time capsule will be ceremoniously sealed up at an event at the Farley Service Plaza. Then at 6pm a WAYV-hosted time-travel beach party kicks into gear in A.C. at the Texas Avenue beach, where Mayor Don Guardian will light a bonfire at 8:15 before it all comes to a head with a fireworks display at 9:15. n the rich history of Atlantic City, Kentucky Ave. holds a special space. From the 1930s through the early 1980s, “KY and the Curb” was the hub of entertainment and nightlife in Atlantic City, attracting huge nightly crowds of both blacks and whites at the three nightclubs on the block — Club Harlem, Grace’s Little Belmont and the Wonder Garden. Celebrate that history at the 4th Annual Historical Kentucky Avenue Renaissance Festival Saturday, Aug. 2, noon-8pm along Kentucky Avenue between Atlantic and Arctic avenues. The free event will feature historical exhibits, live music, food, vendors and plenty of fun activities for children and the entire family. Special guests include Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, John “Sax” Williams, Unity Community Centers Royal Brass Band, and more. — LORI HOFFMAN

fter falling short two years ago, fans of KISS were thrilled that the explosive, fire-breathing, blood-spitting rock band was finally being installed into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in April. But their excitement turned to disappointment when the band — now celebrating its 40th anniversary — said it wouldn’t perform during the April induction ceremony. That’s because the HOF chose only to enshrine the group’s original members: Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. And that, Simmons told Time magazine, disrespected KISS’ lead guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer, who have actually been with the band far longer that Criss and Frehley. Although Simmons, whose outspoken personality has made him the band’s de facto front man, respects the contributions Criss and Frehley made as members of the original unit, he said it simply isn’t right that the hall was ignoring Thayer and Singer. “We’ve been around longer than the Hall of Fame has been around, by about 20 years,” Simmons told Time. “We started before this organization was even a thought. We appreciate getting the award, but they are going to only honor the first seven years of the band — Ace, Peter, Paul and myself, and that’s fine. We appreciate that.” The Hall wanted KISS to perform an abbreviated version of its roof-rattling, pyrotechnic-studded show as the finale of the ceremony, which was being recorded for broadcast on HBO. Before agreeing, Simmons and Stanley wanted to make sure the current members of the band were also being honored. No dice, the hall said. They were only inducting the original four members. “We said, ‘Wait a minute, you have the Grateful Dead, and you inducted all 25 or so members, plus a lyricist who was never even in the band,’” Simmons said. “Metallica had a bass player who, I think, was never even on a record. The [Red Hot] Chili Peppers had eight or nine members in. And you’re not going to honor ours?’... You either honor all or none.” The HOF wouldn’t budge from its stand, so KISS — knowing it would be a disappointment to its fans — became one of the rare bands that refused to perform as part of its induction.
A group or artist doesn’t become eligible for the rock hall until 25 years after the release of their first recording. KISS was first nominated 13 years after their eligibility kicked in — and they missed the cut in 2012 before making it through this year, aided in part by fan support. Simmons said while the HOF honor is important to fans of KISS — many of whom have followed the group for four decades — it really was meaningless to him. He called the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame “a political organization” consisting of 10 men. He understands the rock hall is a private organization and its leadership can run it any way it sees fit. But he also thinks it’s wrong that the hall often chooses to honor bands and artists whose contributions to music pale in comparison to far more deserving candidates that the hall has clearly chosen to ignore. KISS and fellow hard rockers Def Leppard bring their summer tour to Boardwalk Hall on Saturday. Simmons said the special effects and staging easily makes it the biggest show the band has ever done. Performing in their trademark grease paint and flamboyant leather- and spike-studded costumes, the years melt away for Simmons, 64, Stanley, 62, Thayer, 53, and Singer, 56. Each member portrays a character on stage. Simmons is The Demon, Stanley is Starchild, Singer is The Catman and Thayer is The Spaceman. Each does his own makeup, and it generally takes about two hours for them to put on the war paint. Although many of their fans are within their age range, Simmons said it’s exhilarating to see people in their 20s and 30s singing along to hits that were on the charts long before these younger fans were born. “There may be something intrinsic in the DNA of the band — we put on the makeup and the platform heels and we are forever young,” he told Time. “There are a few other bands that have been around for 40 years and I don’t want to see their faces, I’d rather just listen to their music.” n

THE DOCTOR IS IN HAITIAN MIXMA STER michael brun returns to hq NIGHTCLUB

JULY 31 - AUGUST 7, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
bright young man bound for a career in medicine — like Michael Brun — doesn’t always get his elders’ blessings to pursue a dream in electronic dance music. Nor is the nation Brun hails from, Haiti, particularly known as a hotbed for budding EDM talent. But last year, when the 22-year-old pre-med major at Davidson College in North Carolina saw his debut EP, Gravity, debut at No. 2 on Beatport, he got the support of college faculty and advisors to take a one-year leave of absence and focus on his music career. Brun — who also founded his own record label, Kid Coconut, to help showcase Haitian artists — performs Saturday at Revel’s HQ Nightclub. Atlantic City Weekly caught up with him for a chat.
You already aspired to be a DJ when you were 16. What steered you toward music? I had started getting into EDM a few years earlier, so when a friend of mine introduced me to Virtual DJ and FL Studio [music production software], I decided it would be pretty fun to try and create my own.... Growing up, I had just enjoyed music as a hobby. I was studying to be a doctor, but it was during my sophomore year that I had two tracks signed to Dirty South and Hardwell’s label and received a few management and agency offers, so then I started taking it more seriously.
Who are your big musical influences? Pretty much everything my parents listened to. A lot of ’70s and ’80s stuff like Earth, Wind & Fire and Michael Jackson, but also more classic rock like the Beatles and Rolling Stones. In terms of DJs, some of my favorites growing up were Axwell, Deadmau5, Eric Prydz and Dirty South.
You grew up in Port-au-Prince — what aspects of traditional Haitian music and culture do you draw upon? Definitely the percussion and groove. So much of that has influenced the way I approach production, even though it may not be apparent.
Tell us about your new record label, Kid Coconut. Kid Coconut is such a cool venture for me because it allows me to show the spectrum of influences I’ve heard and seen growing up, including Haitian music. I wanted to make sure that the label would be able to reflect that range in a unique way.
Do you prefer festivals or smaller events? I really do enjoy both. The clubs are great because they are usually more intimate and sexy, and you can have a lot of diehard fans up close, but festivals are all about numbers and high energy. I play differently depending on the setting, so it makes for two great experiences.
As someone who grew up on a Caribbean island, what are your feelings about visiting the beaches of southern New Jersey? This is my second time at Revel, and it really feels great to be back. The poolside club really has the beach vibe going on — and overall the energy at both clubs is great. You can feel that people want to enjoy themselves. Read the full interview at acweekly.com. n

ust when you think there are no more stars in the galaxy, they still appear at Memories in Margate. What a weekend: It started out on Friday with the Geator’s appearance on Fox TV’s Good Day Philadelphia live on the beach in Margate. Folks I haven’t seen for years, who go back to when we first opened and who still live in Margate, showed up: Lynn and her beautiful daughters, now the same age as their mom when she first hung out with us in the early ‘70s at Memories, along with Baby Rita, Tony Jacovini, and on and on. And then nighttime just got better. Gary DiBart from the Golden Nugget and his beautiful wife and daughter, Joan and Natalie, with the bachelorette party, Lauren and Samantha and the terrific Barrels family and friends. The Packer Park girls, who go back to the beginning with me — Sister Boat, Sister Hair — and then the return of Chuck Peruto Jr. with the crew from Avalon. Then in came Alon and Jodie, Alfred and Renee, and the whole mishpuchah. All my old friends — Mark Rago, Louis Galdo, Nicky of Melograno’s, Chris and the old Memories crew, all back in tow, plus Billy Bones, Virgil, and their lovely wives, and on and on, too many to mention here. And a special hello to the folks from all over the world who listen to our live broadcasts every weekend from Memories on Cruisin’ 92.1 and KOOL 98.3 and stay in touch via the A.C. Weekly online. Trivia question for you: On Aug. 1 in movie history, a great film was released starring Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, and Lauren Bacall. Can you name it? Answer at the end of the column — now, let’s ask the Geator. Hi, Jerry. I love your passion and love for great music! I want to know, will your Sunday Geator, Frank and Friends show you do on WOnd be rebroadcast anytime during the week? (Phil St.
>> COnT’d fROM PRECEdInG PAGE
John, EHT) — Many people have asked that same question. As you know, WOND is news and talk, and my show has a special feel tailored for Sunday, which is formatted differently from the rest of the station’s programming during the week. So I don’t know how well it would fit another weekly format. However, The Geator, Frank, and Friends has been very successful, and there is talk about syndication for it. We’ll keep you posted. I am a little confused! Today you played “Silence Is Golden” by the Tremeloes, and you said it was the B side to “Rag doll.” Was the Tremeloes an alias for the four Seasons, or did the Tremeloes record their own version of “Rag doll”? (Janice from Trevose, Pa.) — I was referring to the Four Seasons’ version of “Silence Is Golden,” the B side to “Rag Doll.” The Tremeloes, a British group, never recorded “Rag Doll,” but their cover of “Silence Is Golden” was a gigantic hit. I once caught you emceeing an oldies show in new York; your stage presence added so much to the show, putting dJs like Cousin Brucie to shame. (Les Stroh, Westchester, nY) — That was a terrific show at the Academy of Music. It was produced by Larry Marshack, who was aware of my popularity in Philadelphia and wanted to do something different by bringing in an emcee who wasn’t a New York guy. Lee Andrews & the Hearts were on that show, along with Charlie Thomas & the Drifters, the Angels, and Bo Diddley. It was such a success that I brought Larry into Philly and he became my partner in a show we did called The Greatest Rock & Roll Show of Them All. (Trivia answer: Key Largo, 1948.) n

— cropped up since Hopkins and his WBC counterpart, champion Adonis Stevenson, tend to dominate the 175-pound headlines. Consensus polls look for those three to battle it out for supremacy, with one emerging as a unified champion. A hungry challenger like Caparello is little more than that right now; a challenger fighting out of the underdog role. During a recent conversation with Caparello, the Melbourne, Australia-based challenger told Atlantic City Weekly: “He [Kovalev] has a lot to worry about in this fight. I’m coming to win, not just coming to survive. I want to win this fight and become the new champion. I am hungry.” Asked his assessment of the three wellpublicized current champions, Caparello said: “Kovalev is the most feared. Stevenson has the power that equals Kovalev and we all know Bernard Hopkins, but I am coming to take them all.” Along with the Kovalev-versus-Caparello clash, light-heavyweight contender Isaac Chilemba, (22-2-2, 9 KOs), resumes his quest for a title shot when he faces Cory Cummings (17-6-1, 13 KOs), in a scheduled 10-round encounter. Also on the undercard will be Atlantic City resident Decarlo Perez (11-3-1, 4 KOs), looking to get back to his winning ways after suffering an eighthround split decision loss back in January. He’ll take on Marcus Willis, (13-3-2, 3 KOs) of Fort Myers, Florida in a scheduled sixround bout. These fights, along with five others scheduled, promise an exciting evening. The Kovalev-Caparello bout is part of a multi-venue, triple-header HBO telecast that will also feature Brandon Rios versus Diego Chavez in a clash of formidable welterweights, and the Jessie Vargas versus Anton Novikov fight for the WBA super lightweight title. n

n the sport of boxing, fighters have nicknames and monikers that sometimes prove to be little more than delusions of grandeur. In the case of WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (24-0-1, 22 knockouts), his brand of fighting has given him that “you definitely get what’s advertised” reputation. Kovalev looks again to bring his destructive brand of pugilism to Atlantic City this Saturday, Aug. 2, when he makes the third defense of his belt against the tough, undefeated Blake “Il Capo” Caparello, (19-0-1, 6 KOs), at Revel’s Ovation Hall. It’s a match-up that headlines a great night at the fights, brought to you by Kathy Duva’s New Jerseybased promotional company Main Events and the venerable DiBella Entertainment. It’s also an A.C. return for Kovalev, who’s coming off of a sensational seventh-round knockout of then-unbeaten Cedric Agnew in Boardwalk Hall back in March. Gracing the HBO airwaves for the fifth time — the fight will air on HBO After Dark starting at 9:45pm — and having had prior TV exposure on the NBC Sports Network, Kovalev has thrived in the limelight, putting on performances that have made his “Krusher” moniker undeniable. During a media conference call recently, Kovalev says that he isn’t taking his opponent lightly, thereby proving to also have a knack for keeping his confidence level on an even keel. “He is hungry and has nothing to lose,” said Kovalev of Caparello. “It is my job to keep the title; there’s more pressure on me to defend the title. I don’t know Bernard Hopkins, all I know is my next opponent, and his name is Blake Caparello.” Kovalev’s reference to Hopkins — the Philadelphia legend and current holder of the IBF and WBA light-heavyweight belts

erhaps not everyone will score a ticket to the A.C. music extravaganza of the summer, the pair of free DO AC beach concerts this week featuring country stars Blake Shelton and Lady Antebellum (see details at right), but that’s okay: It’s a phenomenal week to see live music around the A.C. area The man from Cabo Wabo, Sammy Hagar, will jam in the name of his Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum. Young country singer Danielle Bradbery will showcase at Resorts. Veteran blues force Marcia Ball will deliver the boogie woogie at Mardi Gras at the Shore. Dickey Betts will remind everyone that he’s an underheralded guitar hero at ACIT. The mega-popular Jason Derulo will hold court at Mixx. And Mimi Jones will perform at Jazz on the Beach.

agar, who will appear Friday at the Borgata, is all about rendering feelgood meat and potatoes rock. He’s touring behind his disc Sammy Hagar and Friends, which includes duets with such pals as Kid Rock, Toby Keith and Ronnie Dunn. Drummer Chad Smith of Chickenfoot and Red Hot Chili Peppers fame, Heart’s Nancy Wilson, the Dead’s Mickey Hart and Journey’s Neal Schon, recorded with Hagar. “It was a big party,” Hagar said. “I had the greatest time. It was loose and it was fun.” It’s hardly surprising that Hagar covered “Margaritaville” with Keith. But the most curious cut Hagar recorded was a bluesy version of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus.” It seems like an oddball choice” Hagar, 66, admits. “It’s unusual. But I heard it on the radio and I always liked that song. I just thought that the weakest way to do that song was in an electronic way like Depeche

Mode did it. I just thought we should go straight blues and Neal Schon just tears it up. He laid it out on the guitar like he can’t in Journey. Things have to be done just so in Journey, but people don’t know that Neal is actually a guitar monster, and you can hear it on our version of ‘Personal Jesus.’” Expect Hagar to render many of the songs from his latest release. And expect some Van Halen tunes as well. But don’t expect Hagar to ever return to Van Halen. “I can’t do that,” Hagar says. “If I ever hit rock bottom and I had to choose between working on a garbage truck or going back to Van Halen, that would be a tough choice. Being in Van Halen was like being married to a beautiful woman who went crazy. Ed (Van Halen) is an incredible guitarist, but it isn’t easy dealing with him. I look at it this way: We had an incredible run. During the early years with the band, it was sex, drugs and rock n’ roll at all times. But then there was the disastrous 2004 reunion. I’m staying away from that scene.” Hagar doesn’t have to go back. His restaurant and tequila business is thriving. “That’s the great thing,” Hagar says. “I don’t have to ever make music for business reasons. I’m just making it for fun.” When Hagar isn’t doing solo shows, he’s out with his supergroup Chickenfoot, which includes guitarist Joe Satriani, Red
Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony. “Chickenfoot doesn’t have the fame or notoriety that Van Halen does but it’s a great band,” Hagar says. “We have the best times and we rock. I love those guys.”
M
eanwhile: Country fans craving something other than the big beach show should check out the charismatic Danielle Bradbery, 18, who won season four of The Voice. Bradbery has a terrific set of pipes and serious potential. Have a blast at Marcia Ball’s concert. The veteran force alternates between Texas blues and Louisiana swamp rock. Ball, an ace pianist and a powerful singer, works the crowd like few other entertainers. Dickie Betts was as an integral a part of the Allman Brothers attack as any member for 30 years. His clean, precise guitar work and his songwriting skills helped define the Southern war horse of a group. An electric performer, he can count legions of famous fans. Jason Derulo is crazy popular. He’s just 24 and already has five top 10 hits. “Wiggle,” “In My Head” and “Talk Dirty” are some of his tunes, which are ubiquitous summer songs. Finally, the smooth Mimi Jones will lay down elegant tunes and world beat rhythms. Jones is a gifted vocalist, bassist and composer; catch her at ‘Mardi Gras at the Shore.’ n

Speaking of Seinfeld, Irrera appeared on the legendary show once. “What was nice about that was that I didn’t have to audition for the part in Seinfeld,” Irrera says. “The funny thing about that— Larry wanted me to do three episodes, but I was always on the road, so I kept turning him down. I had no idea Seinfeld was a great, popular show. So I kept putting it off. I thought, ‘Well, I’ll do this for this old friend.’ I had no idea that it would have been huge for me. But it was fun.” And there’s the caustic Black, who did realize how good The Daily Show would be for his career. The politically incorrect humorist is one of the most literate comics on the circuit — a former playwright and a brilliant wordsmith in the tradition of the late George Carlin. Not just a social critic but one who’s perfected the art of rendering a mental breakdown on stage, the cerebral Black is adept at talking politics, history and religion. So who should you see? Well, Black comes across as a comic who doesn’t care what people think; that’s the antithesis of Seinfeld, a natural at shaping his humor to please the crowd. And then there’s Irrera — who’d be content for a few laughs and a regular sub from The White House. n Dom Irrera: Sat., Aug. 2 at the Tropicana, 2831 Boardwalk, A.C. 8pm. $30–$49.50. 1-800-THETROP. orget about the mega music event Lollapalooza, which is slated for Chicago over the next few days. It’s a comedypalooza this weekend in Atlantic City, as three very different top humorists come to town. Jerry Seinfeld, the king of observational humor, will crack wise Saturday at the Borgata. Lewis Black will rant until he’s red in the face Friday and Saturday at the Borgata and Dom Irrera, now the dean of Philadelphia comedy after the passing of David Brenner, will yuck it up Saturday at the Tropicana. A few years ago Seinfeld did a rare A.C. interview before playing Resorts. “In some ways things started for me here,” he said. “I’ve been playing Atlantic City forever.” The comedian was a regular in town during the early ‘80s, well before he hit with his eponymous groundbreaking sitcom. He has been consistent in terms of material. Seinfeld never panders. “He’s one of a kind,” Irrera agrees. So is Irrera himself, a colorful spinner of yarns whose style should nonetheless be familiar to locals. “There is a certain way a Philly guy tells a tale,” Irrera says. “I’m from that world and so that’s what I do.” Irrera’s humor is full of rich detail — but also unsparing and direct. Whether because of that boldness or despite it, he’s also successful. “It’s not easy to make money at this,” he says. “A lot of great comic minds didn’t make it as stand-up. Look at Larry David: He’s brilliant, and it didn’t work out for him as a standup, but then he created Seinfeld with Jerry.”

ing players to truly stand out; this viscous blend of seafood did so masterfully, adding a saucy liquid ideal for dipping as well. More impressive was the correct rare temperature — not the easiest feat when dealing with a two-inch thick piece of beef — and crusted exterior of my filet. My dessert’s only flaw was the wont of a better description. Referred to simply as “chocolate terrine,” it delivered a layered masterpiece of cacao-rich discs of ganache amid slices of exceptionally tart, skin-on candied orange segments. Together, the combine touched all our taste receptors with a lively balance of sweet, salty, sour and bitter, offering a crescendo-like close. Along with heavenly fare, Marie Nicole’s prides itself on an exceptional selection of martinis and specialty drinks. Priced from $10 to $14, there are 17 martinis to choose from including a half-dozen “dessert” martinis including the Cheese Quake, the Chocolate Kiss, the Key Lime Pie, the Almond Joy, the Coco Nut and the Java Tini, all lovingly flavored with sweet delights. n

bias-cut sausage, sautéed broccoli raab and parmesan, brought large, tubular pasta shapes. Like our Diamond Beach app, the kitchen’s sense of restraint was obvious; the broccoli hadn’t been brutalized by overcooking nor drenched with garlic and olive oil, as often happens. Tuna Mediterranean, meanwhile, delivered one of the prettier presentations of that fish we’ve witnessed. Twin triangles of yellowfin, assembled just off center, showed off flash-seared flesh. Beneath was a tumbling mountain of vegetables — thin French beans, tomatoes, onion, zucchini and olives — with roasted halves of fingerling at the four corners. Seasoned with thyme and fennel, this seasonal, mini-ratatouille complemented the heady tuna like a soaring background vocal. On special: 10 ounces of filet, topped with a house take on crab imperial, surrounded by vertically posed pencilpoint asparagus, all firmly mounted atop a bed of whipped potatoes. t the sparkling, southern tip of Wildwood known as “Diamond Beach,” one of the shore’s preeminent fine dining establishments, Marie Nicole’s, has blossomed over the last decade-and-a-half. Owned and operated by the Barnabei clan (also of Avalon’s Concord Café), Marie Nicole’s remains a Cape May-style experience that just happens to live one island north. We began a recent meal with their geocentric signature, Diamond Beach crab and chilled lobster. It presented as a cleaned tail stuffed with savory crustacean/crab blend, plus a full piece of cold claw meat, nicely extracted but left within shell. The seafood, particularly the lobster, was stunningly fresh and handled with great aplomb, resulting in flavors delicate and soft as Atlantic Ocean breezes. This is an appetizer cunningly representative of native environs. Making things more memorable were a pair of functional, worthy garnishes — avocado relish and mango aioli — positioned between the tail and claw atop a bed of mesclun. We consumed all like a refreshing, petite salad. Fried calamari is among the most elevated regionally, hot both in temp and capsicum. Ladled with a generous toss of incendiary pickled red cherry peppers, their vinegary nature added even more complexity to an already superior bowl of crispy delights. We selected a pair of half-serving pastas, penne gorgonzola and fusilli Calabrese, as middle courses. We loved that the menu allows and encourages such sampling, not charging an extortionate “plate sharing” fee. My penne, bathed in a light, lustrous cream sauce, finished via a plethora of Italy’s native bleu with plenty of crab meat, crisp prosciutto and sweet baby peas. These flavor profiles made for exciting, varied forkfuls, each slightly different than the prior. Fusilli Calabrese, a heartier combine of wide,

a superhuman thanks to the drug, which is leaking into her body and increasing her brain capacity. The film presents the old urban myth that we only use ten percent of our brain. Therefore with Lucy’s capacity changing by the hour, she becomes an all-knowing, allseeing mutant seeking revenge on Mr. Jang with the strength of a terminator, a brain better than the best super computer, and the ability to control all electronics and other assorted objects. She makes the X-Men look like 98-pound weaklings. Morgan Freeman turns up as the neuroscientist who is on screen to explain in his soothing voice about how amazing Lucy will become as she keeps using more of her brainpower and her kickass action skills. The longer the movie plays out, the sillier it gets — Besson has no desire to impede his
fantasy with scientific fact — but Johansson’s delightfully cool performance turns Lucy into an entertaining, mind blowing trip. It is certainly much more satisfying than Johnny Depp’s spring movie Transcendence which mined similar territory with less flair. So as much as you might be muttering “this is really dumb” under your breath as you watch Johansson’s exploding brain and the various mind trip visuals Besson gleefully uses to illustrate her transformation, you have to admit it is never dull. Besson’s love of unrestrained action coated with a sci-fi gloss has been executed with the perfect delivery system — Scarlett Johansson as the ultimate weapon. BACK AT LAST YEAR’S Toronto Film Festival, the film Begin Again was known as Can A Song Save Your Life. It is the latest effort
from writer, director, musician John Carney, best known for the musical Once. This film has that same Once vibe with lots of fun music, street scenes in New York and a plot about a songwriter (Keira Knightly) who is dumped by her boyfriend (Adam Levine) when he makes it big. She meets a down-on-his-luck music producer (Mark Ruffalo) and they begin to work together to create her debut album. It’s a lovely slice of musical life. n

prolific writer, director and producer, Luc Besson’s films are usually chock full of criminal activity, amazing car chases and other feverish, dreamscape visuals. Lucy allows him to take his proclivity in these areas to new heights that are a breathtaking combination of an adrenaline junkie highlight reel and a supremely silly sci-fi mind-bending storyline. The game Scarlett Johansson has been passed the baton from such previous Besson action heroines as Anne Parillaud’s Nikita (Le Femme Nikita) and Milla Jovovich’s Leeloo (The Fifth Element) and she is dazzling as a woman whose drug overdose turns her into the smartest badass on the planet. The story begins with Lucy being asked to do a favor for a friend, deliver a briefcase to a “business man.” Lucy is smart enough to know this favor is dangerous, but when he snaps the handcuff onto her wrist with the suitcase attached she doesn’t have a choice. It turns out her trepidation about this deal was more than justified. Mr. Jang (Minsik Choi) is apparently the most vicious, cold-blooded criminal boss in Taiwan and within minutes of the delivery she is turned into a reluctant drug mule for a new designer drug. Hours later, she is transformed into
