CULTURE SHOCK A wEEk OF THE ATRICS , GR AND AND INTIMATE One of the things that excites me most about cultural life in the greater Atlantic City area these days is that there’s a much wider range of live theatrical performances than there used to be. This coming week is a good example. On Saturday, we’ve got the Atlantic City Ballet taking us to the realm of myth with Sleeping Beauty, set to Tchaikovsky’s music and full of sights and sounds to delight fairytale lovers of all ages. Then on Sunday, the Palm Restaurant at the Trop presents something a little more up close and personal: Falsetto’s Murder, a dinner-theater mystery about a certain businessminded family whose ways should be, shall we say, familiar to us Jersey folks who like to watch premium cable channels. And then on Wednesday, Aug. 20, we go way big — like, epic big — as Cirque du Soleil brings its show Varekai (pictured) to Boardwalk Hall. However you like your culture: you got it. hen one of the most successful acts in the history of Australian music decided to stretch their wings and broaden their geographical horizons, they employed one of the oldest axioms in show business: They decided to break in their act about as far from their native turf as they possibly could get without a spaceship. Human Nature, a vocal quartet whose popularity down under rivaled that of the Beatles, wanted to see if their newest show would play as well in the United States as it did in their homeland — especially since they were now embracing a very uniquely American form of music. During the winter of 2008 — three years after they altered the direction of their careers with the release of their trail-blazing Reach Out: The Motown Record — brothers Mike and Andrew Tierney, Phil Burton and Toby Allen got themselves booked 10,000 miles from home in the sprawling Tropicana Showroom on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. For guys accustomed to performing for thousands of screaming fans in their country, it was a very humbling experience. “I think a couple of the nights there at the Tropicana really hit home just how unknown we really were,” Burton said. “It’s the middle of the week, it’s 25 degrees outside, and there were about 80 people in a room that seats 2,000.” But sometimes, quality trumps quantity. Motown legend Smokey Robinson, who had a day job as a talent-development vice president for Motown, knew of Human Nature, and that their Reach Out album broke sales records in Australia — and that the group was performing in A.C. at the same time he happened to be working down the Boardwalk at Caesars. He accepted the quartet’s invitation to see them perform at the Trop. Robinson was simply blown away by what he heard. It was a pigment of his imagination: Four pale white guys from Australia singing music of Motown — Smokey’s included — with the same passion and soul as the black artists who made the original recordings famous. Robinson signed the group to a presentation deal and began shopping them to Las Vegas casinos for a long-term gig, which he initially found at the Imperial Palace. It wasn’t the Strip’s most glamorous property, but it did give the group plenty of exposure. Best of all, group member Andrew Tierney said during a recent backstage interview at the Borgata, where they’ll play this weekend: While Robinson doesn’t exert any influence over Human Nature’s performances, he has been known to occasionally jump on stage and join the guys on some of their Motown songs, as he did recently when the group celebrated its 1,000th performance in Las Vegas. Human Nature formed in 1989, when the Tierney brothers, Burton and Allen were still in
high school. They initially called themselves the 4 Trax and specialized in the doo-wop sounds of the late 1950s. One of the first songs they mastered was The Penguins’ 1954 hit “Earth Angel.” They gradually built a following, got signed by a record label and released their first singles in 1996, both of which hit the Aussie top 20. More importantly, they caught the ears of artists like Michael Jackson and Celine Dion, both of whom used Human Nature as an opening act on their tours of Australia and Europe. But it was their 2005 album, Reach Out: The Motown Record, that forever changed their lives and set them up for the type of mainstream American success of which most artists can only dream. What probably worked in their favor — besides the fact that they nailed the songs perfectly — is that none of the four gave a fleeting thought that what they were doing could have been considered musical sacrilege: four white guys singing music almost exclusively associated with American black artists, and iconic ones at that. “I think we were too naively innocent to even contemplate that,” Allen said as his three mates laughed. “We just wanted to do the best music we could the best way we could.” By the time Human Nature began working on their third Motown album, Robinson had made sure the rest of the Motor City music community was tuned in. The guys were joined on their Get Ready album by Robinson, Mary Wilson (an original member of the Supremes) and Martha Reeves (she of Vandellas fame). Simultaneously, word of mouth about their live show began to spread up and down the Las Vegas Strip, and they began to pack them in. Of course, having the words “Smokey Robinson presents…” on the marquee didn’t exactly drive away business. Other Strip casinos began to take notice, and Human Nature was finally hired away from the Imperial Palace and took up residency at the Venetian, an A-list hotel where they’re in the middle of an extended residency gig, save some time to tour in both America and Australia. While they have a catalogue of original music and covers from their pre-Motown days in Australia, it doesn’t appear likely Human Nature will ever stray too far from the sound that put them over the top. “One of the best things of being a vocal group is that we can sing anything from AC/DC to doo-wop,” Mike Tierney said. “And we can do other material. But we’ve been together for 25 years, and our dream has always been to do the Motown show that we’re doing now.” n Watch the Emmy-winning Curtain Call with David Spatz, Saturdays at 6pm on WmGm-TV NBC40.

anadian electronic dance music DJ/producer Felix Cartal started his ascent on the international nightclub/dance club scene as the bass player for a punk rock band in his native Vancouver. That frenzied, beat-driven musical style emulated the energy of the dance clubs he often frequented, and led to an interest in producing and remixing EMD as a teenager. The now-27-year-old has since become one of the biggest names and soughtafter artists in the genre. He visits Haven nightclub Saturday starting 10pm with special guest and EDM upstart Grand & Warren. Operating under Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records label, Cartal has produced two full-length studio albums and about 20 extended play records, most recently an EP entitled Credits featuring the hit single “Ready for Love” with vocalist
Chloe Angelides. Since September 2012, Cartal has also produced a weekly hourlong iTunes podcast called the Weekend Workout, and has created the Disposable Camera Project in which a chosen fan at each of his shows is turned loose with a disposable camera, images of which are later uploaded to Cartal’s Web site and social media pages. Grand & Warren are James Alexander and Gary Rabbitt — friends from a Jersey City prep school whose popularity in northern New Jersey hot spots has expanded to the top dance clubs in the tristate area. They are regulars at top nightclubs like Pacha in New York City and Lit Ultra Bar in Philly, performing a variety of house music including progressive and progressive electro. n More info: felixcartal.com • grandandwarren.com

NIGHTLIFE
nce again, nothing but stars and more stars around here. If you were listening to the live broadcast on KOOL 98.3 last Saturday night, then you know. It began with the O’Haras — that’s Pat and family from Uncle Bill’s Pancake House — dancing and prancing, along with Joe Watson of the Philadelphia Flyers organization, and then it’s home base for Tommy O’Leary and the Longport crew. Yes, the Woodrow Wilson reunion was bombastic. And your eyes did not deceive you — that was our former boxing commissioner George Bochetto boogying on the dance floor. Then Bart Blatstein, his lovely wife, Jill, and the whole mishpuchah saluted my good buddy Dr. Hussain and his lovely Roseanne, who were celebrating his birthday. In attendance was the ever popular Father Riley, who led the parishioners from St. Richard’s onto the dance floor. And then it was Kelly’s birthday party with half of Ocean City in attendance. Kenny Hoffman, marketing chief for Dietz & Watson, and his lovely Sue came down from Elkins Park, and that was my friend Luca, owner of Panorama and Revolution in Philadelphia, who looked on in amazement as everyone partied with birthday girl Carol Tamburino. There was little Sammy, his wife, Colette, Donna, and it went on and on until 4am. And what can I say about Sunday at Memories with Frankie & the Fashions and special guest Bobby Rydell? Outstanding. And how about my man DJ Joel Stephens, who knocked ’em dead? Hard to believe that Labor Day is just a few weeks away, so if you haven’t picked up on the magic and the stardust at Memories in Margate, hurry up on by. Now, let’s ask the Geator. How does a singer get inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? Would love to see Johnny Maestro inducted. Is there anything his fans can do to get him in? Shame he
wasn’t inducted while alive. (Doreen, West Deptford) — It gets tougher and tougher to try and get in the many deserving artists who belong in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Every year I submit a list of artists who I believe should be inducted. Unfortunately they’re always shot down in favor of the newer artists who’ve just met the requirement of 25 years since their first release, leaving out so many of the true legends. But I will keep on trying. On the radio I heard you talking about a show you once did called “The Greatest Rock & Roll Show of Them All.” Where was it and who was on that show? (Donnie, Sea Isle City) — The reason we called it that was because it reunited artists who hadn’t sung together for many years. It was Dion back with the original Belmonts, Ben E. King back with the Drifters, Johnny Maestro back with the original Crests, Ronnie Spector back with the original Ronettes, and we topped it off with two headliners, Little Richard and Fats Domino. We originally planned on only one show at the old Philadelphia Civic Center, but it was so successful that as soon as the lineup was announced it sold out and we had to schedule another show, which also was sold out. It was 1972, the year that I bought Memories. Jerry Blavat, we had some great times. Do you remember the Anvil Inn? It was your first nightclub gig! (Stan Gitt, Philadelphia) — Oh, yeah! I believe that was in Concordville. I remember the Anvil very well, and I remember you booking me there. At that time I had a group called the Geatormen. When we appeared at the Anvil it was a smash, and we ended up playing the club several times. n

aving a child changes everything. After Jennifer Nettles had her first baby a year and a half ago, she morphed. “I had to,” she says, talking to Atlantic City Weekly by phone from her Manhattan apartment. “He’s my boss. He makes the schedule. After I finish speaking with you, I have so much laundry to do.” Nettles, 39, who’s best known as half the country duo Sugarland, started exploring her music solo after becoming a mother. The perky singer-songwriter is now touring behind her eclectic debut disc, That Girl; she’ll take the stage Saturday at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City.
You’re part of a uber-popular act, but you decided to shelve Sugarland to go solo. Why? Why not? I had a baby, and I started to think about doing a solo project, and I did it. I want to explore and work with other writers and musicians and see what I can come up with.
Producer Rick Rubin brought in some of the best players in the business, such as guitarist Smokey Hormel and keyboardist Ian McLagen. It turned out

about maintaining your integrity while selling the art.
That’s an fascinating statement, considering how homogenous the music industry has become. It’s super homogenous. That’s spot-on. The direction and the musicians on this album help it stand out. I think fans are used to the homogenous sound, and some may really like that, but I think there are a legion of fans who need more than that. I think it’s important to push the envelope; if we don’t, we just keep making the same thing. It’s some kind of gross inbreeding in which weird characteristics become the norm.
You’re stepping out of your genre like Bon Jovi did when he tabbed you to sing “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” with him. Jon Bon Jovi is just up the road from Atlantic City. Why not ask him to join you at Harrah’s? That’s a great idea. I didn’t even think about that. Is Bon Jovi on tour?
No. Then maybe I’ll call Jon and ask if he would like to come down and yodel a familiar song with me.
better than I ever imagined. What I enjoy about Rick is that he is so connected to the song, and he’s interested in the arc of the song, where it lands emotionally. From a song standpoint, we just wanted to live in the moment... It sounds like a retro disc, doesn’t it?
What’s next? I’ve already gotten the bug to write again. I want to make a new album. I’m starting a new conversation with my fans.
Yes — it has the warmth of a ’70s album. It’s going to surprise fans, since you’re singing soul, blues and rock songs, as well as country. I’m from the swamps of
portunities, and that’s what I’m going to do. Sugarland will get back together — I just don’t know when. I’m compelled to continue on as a solo artist. That’s what I’m excited about at the moment. n

So you’re going to make another solo album and keep Sugarland on ice? Yes. The decision was to explore solo op-

coastal vino GOLDEN NUGGET’S WINE FEST CELEBR ATES CALIFORNIA’S ITALIAN VINTNER S By R Ay SCH W EI B E RT
S
ince its arrival in May 2011, Golden Nugget and its parent company Landry’s Restaurants have brought to Atlantic City some of the exceptional events that were proven winners at many of its other properties nationwide. One of those is most certainly the Cal-Ital Summer Winefest, returning for the third year Friday and Saturday evenings, Aug. 15-16, at two separate Golden Nugget venues. On Friday from 8 to 10pm it’s the Wine & Jazz Reception Under the Stars, where for a $39-per-person fee guests can enjoy wines from 25 of the most prolific California wineries with origins from prestigious Italian-family vintners, delectable cuisine from Golden Nugget’s culinary staff, and live jazz on the outdoor Event Lawn. On Saturday it’s the “main event” — the Grand Tasting at Golden Nugget’s Grand Ballroom where, for a $75 fee, guests can enjoy samples of about 120 wines and an elegant evening of live jazz and culinary delights. The Grand Tasting is from 7 to 10pm, but guests can gain early admission at 6pm for an additional $25.
“It’s safe to say that the backbone of the California wine industry is rooted in the Italian Immigrants that planted and built so many of the first vineyards and wineries,” says Scott Tarwater, Landry’s corporate director of wine and special events. “Well before Prohibition and even during those times with sacramental wines, the first families of the California wine industry were of Italian heritage, bringing their inherited know-how and wine-making skills to the ideal climate and soil of California’s world-class wine-growing regions. This annual event pays homage to those families on both sides of the pond.” Among the noted Italian surnames that will be part of the Cal-Ital Fest are the Pedroncellis, the Parduccis, the Sebastianis, the Andrettis, the Mondavis and others. Also this year Carla Faccioli, best known as one of the stars on the VH1 hit show Mob Wives, will be pouring her own line of wines including Montepulciano, Trebbiano and Prosecco. Guests will have an opportunity to meet her and discuss her wines. / more info: goldennugget.com/atlanticcity n

SAMpLE SAvORY diShES AT TROpiCAnA’S ‘TASTE OF ThE QUARTER’ — And gET REAdY FOR MORE TO COME
T
his year’s Taste of The Quarter event — Tropicana Casino and Resort’s seventh annual dining extravaganza, offering samplings from 22 different restaurants and food retailers — is notable for several reasons. For one thing, Monday night’s event is the first Taste of The Quarter that’s open to eaters of all ages. Additionally, 100 percent of the evening’s proceeds will benefit the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, a regional organization committed to supporting our local communities across such basic needs as education, income and health. In a property that’s undergone a large-scale dining reboot over the course of the last several years, it’s also an opportunity to showcase what we now consider to be A.C.’s widest and most diverse directory of food options. Expect a festive atmosphere in the 200,000-square-foot entertainment complex, along with an engaging assortment of menu items (see “Taste of the Quarter specials,” right) from the Trop’s vibrant collection of eateries. For Tropicana general manager Steve Callender, the resort’s sustained commitment to creating excitement at The Quarter specifically meant a chance to expand the property’s non-gaming entities and call attention to its incredible, diverse array of dining options. Last year’s wave of reinvention began with the departure of Corky’s BBQ and the Russian-themed
restaurant Red Square, which were ably replaced by Casa Taco and Tequila Bar and the Broadway Burger Bar — along with a soaring three-story Chickie’s & Pete’s; Perry’s Pizza; an outpost of South Philly’s outstanding Tony Luke’s sandwich shop; and the gourmet quick-serve Marketplace Express. Further Trop enhancements will be in evidence this fall, says Callender — specifically, after the Miss America pageant — as visitors will discover new marble walkways, the goal of which are to create a seamless, flowing atmosphere for the entire resort. Other improvements will include remodeled rooms in the North Tower; the relocation of Blue Mercury Spa to a larger, downstairs space off Brighton Avenue; and the anticipated creation of a light-and-water show that Callender characterizes as being “like the fountains of Bellagio.” All those, he says, should be finished in time for summer 2015. For a property that correctly anticipated the Atlantic City market’s turn toward more casual dining fare in an upscale environment, this seems a fine time to celebrate. Hundreds are expected at this year’s Taste of The Quarter; those considering attendance may want to consider a special hotel package. An overnight stay on Aug. 18, plus tickets to the event and an $8 Starbucks credit, is $149. Reservations may be made at 1-800345-8767 and using booking code TTASTE4. n

O ROBIN, OUR ROBIN THE WORK WILLIAMS LEAVES BEHIND IS A LOVE LETTER TO THE POWER OF IMAGINATION BY GENEVIEVE VALENTINE
T
ROBIN WILLIAMS IN dead poets societ y
weren’t all hits, of course; in a career as varied as his, there will inevitably be the sort of movies that probably sound like great ideas and aren’t, and into every body of work, a little Bicentennial Man must come. But for every awkward outing, there’s a slice of the sublime, and movies like The Birdcage are Williams at his best: As Armand, the more understated half of a gay relationship, Williams’ comic timing is impeccable, and the undercurrent of lifelong frustration and struggle to live openly gives weight to the film’s most farcical twists. It’s a beautiful balance of Williams as both observer and observed. It’s well-traveled ground for Williams, given that so many of his comedies bore a poignant streak. But his dramatic work was often surprising, not so much for film such as The Fisher King, Good Morning Vietnam or
Good Will Hunting, which maintained much of the warmheartedness of his comedic work, but for the roles in which he abandoned his brand of likeability for more ambiguous, even villainous roles. Some of his best work was on display in the creeping psychological horror of One Hour Photo, in which his lonely photo developer becomes fixated on a family whose photos suggest the American dream, and in Insomnia, in which he played an unrepentant killer who masterminds his own investigation. They were undoubtedly dark roles, but Williams inhabited them with the same fierce loyalty he brought to the best of his comedy. There’s no doubt Robin Williams was a phenomenal screen presence. As a kid, I found it oddly fitting that he brought so much of himself to the genie in Aladdin, ad-libbing riffs for dozens of hours, that his performance dis-

qualified the movie from a Screenplay Oscar nomination — it was, in no uncertain terms, his movie. But in the wake of the news on Monday evening, many of the remembrances were about what Williams did when the cameras weren’t rolling. Steven Spielberg called Williams from the set of Schindler’s List when the weight of the material got too heavy. Williams was a USO performer and worked with Comic Relief and St. Jude’s Hospital. As Christopher Reeve prepared for surgery following his paralyzing accident, Williams burst in pretending to be a proctologist (because of course) just to surprise a laugh out of Reeve. Twitter user Sara Amundson (@saraterror) recounted a story of Williams spending Christmas Eve with a terminally ill girl even after the Make-A-Wish Foundation had declared it impossible; Amundson says they hung orgami cranes. The stories felt not like Hollywood anecdotes or celebrity encounters; they felt like things people told one another at the wake of an outrageous uncle who was suddenly, terribly missed. The impression they create is of someone constantly reaching, out and out and out, to other people who were going through dark times. It was known territory for Williams. He openly battled drug addiction, alcoholism and depression, some of which made it into his stand-up work in moments that felt like manic confession, as he turned his no-holdsbarred humor on himself. But he leaves behind a legacy of generosity — as a performer and as a public figure — and a body of work that conjures the dedication and warmth he felt toward the power of imagination. “No matter what anybody tells you,” he says in Dead Poets Society, “words and ideas can change the world.” We believed him. We still believe him. n

here’s no other quote to lead with, of course. The final moments of Dead Poets Society, in which students stand on their desks to the call of “O Captain! My Captain!” acknowledge Robin Williams’ John Keating as a crucial, subversive influence on the way they approach the world. It’s remained a touchstone of Williams’ own career, which took a similarly subversive, often irreverent path that established him as both one of the movie-comedy greats and a dramatic actor whose depth and sharpness more than held their own in films that have left an enduring mark on movie history. His particular high-energy, unabashed humor — alternating the vicious and the sincere — made him a household name shortly after Mork and Mindy premiered on TV in 1978, and his film career was built as much around his persona as around the characters he played. The iconic Mrs. Doubtfire and Aladdin’s genie both offered room for Williams’ trademark improvisation, and he often took refreshing risks on darker comedy: Death to Smoochy isn’t a comfortable film, but it’s a deeply interesting examination of the codependence that can build up around fame and a sharp look at the obsessive nature of the performer who needs an audience.
