EDITOR’S NOTE

BY STEPHEN SEGAL

FALLING GR ACEFULLY WHAT CAN WE LE ARN FROM OCE AN CIT Y’S FLOP PLOP? Ask people about what sort of town Ocean City is, and you’ll hear a lot of familiar descriptions: It’s a cozy beach town. It’s a family town. It is, famously, a dry town. But there’s something else, too, that I might argue is even more important: Ocean City’s a quirky town. It’s a town that recently had its annual “Weird Week,” full of offbeat events like a contest to see which toddler can make the most noise. This week’s quirk is a fascinating one: the “King and Queen of Plop” at 11 am on Friday, Aug. 29 at the Ninth Street beach: an event in which people compete to see who can fall to the sand most dramatically in slow motion. Usually in life, we’re all so obsessed about not stumbling, not making asses of ourselves, not needing help, that it never occurs to us to look for the beauty, the joy, that can come with simply knowing how to fall. You know what? There might just be something to it. More info: ocnj.us

A tour to remember CHERISHING ROBIN WILLIAMS’ vISIt BY DAvI D J. SpAtz

H

aving covered casino entertainment here since Day One 36 years ago — and having been born with Atlantic City beach sand in my baby shoes — I’ve occasionally been asked to give visiting first-time entertainers the nickel tour of the town. It was always a fun assignment, because it gave me an opportunity to see the performers who graced the casino stages in off-duty, unguarded moments. But the most memorable drive-around happened 30 years ago — with an entertainer who was not of this planet. By the time he made his casino debut here in 1984, Robin Williams was already two years removed from his alien character Mork from the planet Ork on Mork & Mindy, the ABC sitcom that transported him from club-date comic when the series debuted in 1978 to major headliner and, eventually, an A-list movie star. Every casino in town was offering Williams a blank check to get his signature on a contract. The old Sands Hotel Casino came out on top in the Book Robin Williams Sweepstakes. The night before he opened his weekend gig in the 750-seat Copa Room nightclub — which was about 10 percent the size of the arenas in which he’d eventually perform — I was asked to show Robin around town. It was the first time in Atlantic City for the Illinois native and transplanted San Francisco Bay area resident. I met Robin and his manager, David Steinberg (who’s not the comedian of the same name), at the Sands as night began to fall in Atlantic City. Steinberg, who managed Williams for 35 years, hopped in the front passenger seat of a non-descript Lincoln Town Car. Robin and I climbed into the back. My first impression was that Robin — almost like George Carlin, who he considered one of his comedic influences — seemed introverted. While the driver took us on a circuitous route around the city, I pointed out some of the sights, everything from the glittery new casinos to the city’s seamy underbelly. Williams had an occasional off-the-cuff quip when he saw something that piqued his curiosity. He seemed especially intrigued by the fashion sense of the hookers along Pacific Avenue, but purely in a comic sense. For most of the ride, however, he was content to let me do the talking while he made mental notes and asked the occasional question. Before returning to the Sands, I asked if he wanted to see the Boardwalk, and we walked for about five or six blocks along the world’s most famous wooden avenue. “What’s with all the crippled people?” he asked me quietly. “Is everyone who comes here sick or something?” I wasn’t sure what he meant. “What’s with all the wheelchairs?” he asked. So I patiently explained that they weren’t

wheelchairs for the crippled and infirm; they were “rolling chairs,” which for almost a century were an alternative means of Boardwalk transportation for people who had a few extra bucks in their pockets and were willing to pay to be pushed along the boards. We returned to the Sands, had dinner in the Brighton Steak House and said goodnight. The following evening, every seat in the Copa Room was filled. Between the invited high rollers and the few lucky fans able to purchase tickets, the room was filled, and they were adding extra seats at the last minute and hoping the city fire marshal wouldn’t pay a surprise visit and cite them for exceeding the room’s capacity. Williams stepped into the spotlight and proceeded to do 90 of the most brilliant and manically funny shows I’d ever seen. He seemed to be making a lot of it up as he went along — which, I later discovered, he did. But even more amazing was that after just a few hours in a car and a 30-minute walk on the Boardwalk, he had Atlantic City so dialed in — people, places and things — that you’d have sworn he’d been born and raised here and not in the suburbs of Chicago. I saw him briefly after the show and congratulated him on a successful debut; he thanked me again for my back-seat course in Atlantic City 101. Fast forward to 2008. Robin Williams, abovethe-title movie star, arena headliner and million-dollar-a-show act, was finally returning to Atlantic City. He was coming to Borgata with his Weapons of Self-Destruction Tour — which, when you think about his death last week, was a sadly prophetic name for the show. I did a phone interview with Robin a week before his gig, which appeared right here in Atlantic City Weekly. I reminded him of our chance encounter from years earlier; he said he remembered, but I was doubtful and thought he was just saying that to be nice. After his opening night show at Borgata, we met backstage and I introduced myself as his “tour guide” from 1984. He gave me a bear hug and then asked me how the “sick people” are doing. I wasn’t quite sure what he meant. “You know, the crippled people on the Boardwalk in the wheelchairs,” he said, and burst out in laughter. All doubts dispelled. Turns out he really did remember that night a quarter-century earlier. Rest well, Robin. You earned your angel wings making a lot of people happy for a long time. n

at Graham may be best known for returning from the dead time and time again as Bonnie Bennett in the hit TV series The Vampire Diaries, but the multi-talented multilinguist — she can converse in four languages — is fast becoming as well known for her music as her acting career. The Swiss-born Graham was raised in the Los Angeles area and began acting in commercials as a child. Formal training in piano, voice and dance steered her toward songwriting as a teen and, after getting signed to A&M Octone Records, she had a hit single from her debut EP called “Put Your Graffiti On Me” that spent six weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance

Club Songs chart, peaking at No. 5. With cover-model good looks, she’s also appeared in several music videos, among them Akon’s “Mr. Lonely,” John Legend’s “Used to Love U,” Musiq Soulchild’s “Buddy,” Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” and Diddywith-Usher’s “Looking for Love.” Graham, who turns 25 on Sept. 5, is currently working on her first fulllength album in between production of The Vampire Diaries, which launches its sixth season in October on the CW network. She’ll be a special-guest performer at The Pool After Dark’s Epic Saturdays party Aug. 23, with music by DJ Eddie Edge and a special-guest set by DJ Mom Jeans. More info: katgraham.com n

AUGUST 21 - 28, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

nce again, greetings and salutations. If you were listening to the live broadcast from Memories last weekend, you know it began with my man Fred Shabel and his lovely wife, Irene, taking to the dance floor, along with Wendy Hamilton, Mary Campbell with Conan O’Brien’s look-alike and group, and the Admiral and his Linda. And parties galore. The lovely Lisa Cimino of the 2300 Arena celebrated her birthday with Philly Pops chairman Salvatore DeBunda. In attendance, Paul Conaway of Wanamaker Entertainment. And the folks from Uncle Bill’s Pancake House had such a good time the previous weekend that they all came back, as did our favorite boxing commissioner, George Bochetto. Then there was Joe Wags and the whole crew, along with my pal Herb Spivak, the man who put together the Electric Factory with Larry Magid, and his daughter from the West Coast, Danielle. The big reunion was the Class of ‘74 from Bishop Eustace in Pennsauken. Then there were the Longport kids, Magdalena Senior and Magdalena Junior. The return of my old friend Brian Ruhling of the Buck Hotel with little Sammy and Colette, and last week’s birthday girl, Carol Tamburino. Yes, even the Three Amigos were partying: Sean, Anthony, Justin, and their ladies. Jam-packed till 4 a.m. And that’s the way it was. By the way, it’s not only Fridays and Saturdays that are happening, but Sundays as well. And if you like the Philly sound, you’ll want to be at Memories this Sunday when we present local favorites Wall Street. The following Thursday, Aug. 28, it’s the return of Not Collidge Mateerial with music from the ‘60s and ‘70s, and watch for a surprise for our last Sunday of the season. More about that next week; now, let’s ask the Geator. Geat, did you ever have the opportunity to meet Robin Williams? (Mitchell Wolf,

NYC) — Yes, briefly. I was having dinner at Campagnola in New York with the Kimmels when he walked in. He had been filming Jumanji and had a bunch of kids with him. He began kibitzing with everybody in the restaurant and made his way over to our table to say hello. I said, “Hi, Robin, Jerry Blavat,” not sure if he knew me, but he said, “The Geator!” You play a great song called “Groovy Baby” that I never heard anywhere else. Who is the group that sings it? (Harvey M., Longport) — The Cameo Parkway label says “Billy Abbott and the Jewels.” Bernie Lowe, owner of Cameo Parkway, needed a backup group to complement Billy Abbott’s voice. Also on that label were the Tymes, who already had a couple of hits. Not wanting to use their name, fearing it would take away from their popularity, he dubbed them the Jewels, but it was really the Tymes backing up Billy Abbott (who changed his name from Billy Vaughn to avoid confusion with bandleader Billy Vaughn). I remember going to the Elbo Room in Margate back in the ‘60s. Was the name changed to Memories? (Fran Wesselt, Plymouth Meeting) — I worked the old Elbo Room starting in 1970 but left in the summer of 1971 to work in Avalon for Phil Matalucci’s Rock Room and the old Princeton. Meanwhile they changed the Elbo Room to the Oar House, but it was a complete bomb, and that’s when the owners, in the fall of 1971, came to me. I bought the club in 1972 and turned it into Memories. The whole story of how it happened is in my book, You Only Rock Once. n

CHOPS & THEN SOME CHRIS TU CKER’S STILL ONE OF THE FUNNIEST AROUND — AN D A GRE AT AC TOR by E D CO N D R A N

He’s not exactly as clean a comedian as, say, the squeaky Brian Regan, but Tucker’s language isn’t what it was a decade ago, either; he’s cut quite a bit of the obscenity. Then again, he doesn’t need the crutch of cursing. Tucker’s mind is inventive enough to be funny without shocking the crowd. It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Tucker’s big break when he appeared in Heavy D’s video for “Nuttin But Love.” The comedian has been on the fast track ever since. The Atlanta native picked up an agent in 1995 after his hilarious turn in House Party 3. Tucker had small parts but ripped it up in such films as Dead Presidents, The Fifth Element and Jackie Brown. Due to his hectic schedule on the set, Tucker doesn’t have much time for touring. Who knows when he’ll be back in Atlantic City again after this week? Who knows what Tucker will wax about when he takes the Borgata stage? One thing’s a safe bet, in any case: He’ll be unpredictable and push the envelope. n

CHRIS TUCKER Sat., Aug. 23. 8pm. $59-$79. the Borgata, 1 Borgata Way, A.C. 609.317.1000. theborgata.com

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • AUGUST 21 - 28, 2014

hris Tucker isn’t just one of the funniest, most popular comics on the circuit; the charismatic entertainer is a heck of an actor, too. Case in point: Tucker managed to steal scenes from Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper as a supporting player in David O. Russell’s exceptional Silver Linings Playbook. Tucker, 42, who will perform Saturday at the Borgata, nailed it as a mental-patient pal of Cooper’s character — an amusing and playful role, if a brief one. What was even more surprising than Tucker’s best performance yet in front of the camera was that he accepted such a bit part in the first place after becoming a mega-star courtesy of the Rush Hour film series. He’d actually earned a $25 million salary for Rush Hour 3; that was more than anyone earned for a film back in 2007. Despite breathing such rarified Hollywood air, Tucker still sought out the small gem of a part in Silver Linings Playbook. It reinforces something we see when Tucker hits the stage as a comic, too: The man brings his all to the game, from world-class storytelling to snappy, rapid-fire patter to Pryor-worthy facial expressions that do things mere words never could.

ou know, hats off to Alan Jackson. The accomplished singer-songwriter, who was only second to Garth Brooks in terms of country-music popularity during the ‘90s, has already made his fortune, and his legacy is carved into country’s mythic Mount Rushmore. He’s sold more than 60 million albums, won two Grammys and 16 CMA Awards. He’s accomplished more than most ever dream of — and now? Now he’s doing it for himself. Jackson, who will perform Sunday at Caesars, is touring behind his 15th album, the decidedly uncommercial The Bluegrass Album. See, it’s not all about hits for Jackson; at this point in his career, he can afford to take chances in the studio. Sure, on the road, he still plays the familiar favorites. But who can blame him if he’s ready to make the kind of records that will please himself first and foremost? It’s a path he’s been heading down for a while now. Jackson, 55, released Precious Memories in 2006 and the follow-up Precious Memories Volume 2 in 2013; each album is filled with pure, poignant gospel tracks. Which makes sense: That’s what he was weaned on as a child. When Jackson was coming of

age during the ‘60s, the sounds of gospel are what filled his small Georgia house. It should have come as no surprise that Jackson would eventually cast his gaze back upon the music that his parents loved. On the other hand, Jackson didn’t grow up on bluegrass — but his warm voice fits in perfectly among the banjos, mandolins and fiddles that propel The Bluegrass Album. There are some nice covers — particularly, Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon of Kentucky” — but Jackson shines brightest with his eight originals. After songwriting in earnest for the last quarter century, Jackson’s got a way with relatable, hook-laden melodies. He’s almost reminiscent of a country version of Tom Petty: just incredibly consistently good over a long period of time. Audiences are familiar with the lanky, soft-spoken entertainer’s signature songs: “Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” “Dallas” and “If I Could Make a Living,” just to name some No. 1 hits. But that’s just scraping the surface; fans wait to hear the deep album tracks, too. Jackson has long balanced his musical career with family

life — his wife and three daughters, who range in age from 23 to 16. Though he’s not big on interviews, he’s stated on numerous occasions that his girls inspire him. In addition to penning his own hits, the singer has had an impact on many young country recording artists. The Zac Brown Band, for instance, teamed up with Jackson in 2010, recording “As She’s Walking Away” as a duet. “Alan Jackson is someone who is on his own level,” Zac Brown Band multiinstrumentalist Clay Cook marvels. “He’s an original, who is such a great singer. Zac loves working with other recording artists — we just had an amazing experience working with Dave Grohl; that was cool — but I know how Zac feels about the chance the band had to get in there with Alan Jackson. He’s that good.” n

ALAN JACKSON Sun., August 24. 9pm. Caesars, 2100 Pacific Ave, A.C. Tickets: $75-$135. More info: caesarsac.com

ong-thriving independent restaurants are a special joy anywhere — which makes the 30-plus year tenure of Los Amigos, strategically situated inside the perimeter of Tanger Outlets on Atlantic Avenue, utterly remarkable. Across four decades, the iconic, original structure has expanded to include a soaring second-floor dining space providing outstanding city views plus an open-air ground-floor patio section, buffered from A.C.’s urban hubbub by greenery. We began a recent weekend dinner with their authentic guacamole; a signature dish accompanied by warm, house-made tortilla chips. The bountiful bowl of avocado had been lovingly mashed — not quite smooth, but left with some chunky texture, which we admired. Added was a toss of diced tomato, providing additional sweetness and dots of crimson color within the pastel green blend. I’d call it a toss-up between this the guacamole at Harrah’s Dos Caminos as the finest hereabouts; you can’t go wrong either way. An appetizer sampler presented two slices each of crab and chicken quesadillas, a pair of southwest spring rolls and sweet fried plantains drizzled with sauces. The spring rolls in particular were fantastic, steamy and assertively seasoned, spot-on fusing Asian thinking with Latino style. On that subject, Los Amigos’s ambiance presents an environment like visiting a multilevel hacienda; adorned with shades of deep orange, yellow and teal. The long, narrow building’s natural design allows a number of areas which are almost private booths — definitely date-night worthy. My main dish, carne asada, brought a workingman-worthy hunk of grilled beef, very rare as instructed. That skirt steak was topped by a thin, translucent sheathe of jack cheese, add-

Mexico Restaurant and Bar (atlantic City) Being popular among local Latinos speaks ing a subtle, creamy counterpoint. Other elements on this composed plate proved brilliant: a warm bowl of seasoned charro beans, a dome of Mexican rice, a cheese enchilada and more of that beguiling guac. Our only regret was not having more tortillas with which to round up that bold combination. On special was seafood chimichanga: bay scallops, tilapia and shrimp sautéed in chipotle butter, folded into a spinach tortilla along with a mix of carrots, broccoli, zucchini and onions, then fried. The hefty tube was topped with cheese and mango salsa, sided by achiote-saffron rice and black beans. (Demonstrating the kitchen’s skill set: how deftly this tortilla had been handled. A couple seconds too long in the fryer and that precious, yielding seafood could have been reduced to cat food. Instead, while the green shell became crisp and golden, everything wrapped inside remained protected and perfect.) Desserts, from a lengthy list, were both more than pleasant surprises. Dulce de

leche mousse, actually a cake, beautifully conveyed the traditional charisma of that Spanish treat. Like the chimi, we were awed by the lightning-in-a-bottle triumph of capturing dulce’s elegance in cake format. Our server informed us this was a newly added menu item. The technical expertise evident was really startling, sophisticated and worldly. My companion, meanwhile, went directly for chocolate and was delighted by tall chocolate Kahlua toffee mousse cake: multiple layers of spongy cake, layered by satiny, sexy cocoa-colored mousse. Downright monolithic, this rich, decadent slice literally towered — three inches or so — above the plate. But like my dulce dez, it was the magical hand of a terrifically skilled pastry chef which most stood out. Every nugget of possible flavor had been thoroughly developed and wisely extracted, like an edible, graduate-level thesis on the complex properties of cacao. I don’t often say this, but “wow” seems awfully appropriate. n

album, we often drop in on them for staccato bursts of emotional dysfunction and skip out just as quickly. But part of its success as a dark comedy is its earnest investment in its lead characters, which gives us a reason to follow them—and even more, to believe in them. (Clara is really intense. That theremin riff is probably killer, right?) And that belief is crucial, given that, at heart, Frank is a fable about how mediocrity is the death of art, and fame is the death of integrity. There’s an inevitability attached to people who love a thing, declaring they knew about it before it was cool; if you love enough things, it’s just a numbers game. That actor you like will eventually end up all over Tumblr. That band you like will have a song on The Vampire Diaries. And there’s no small value in recognizing and judging something for what it is. Streets of Fire, for instance, is by no means a great film, and if you expect one, you’re in for a dire 90 minutes. But if you need a post-apocalyptic rockabilly musical action flick, you’re not going to find a better one—and realizing the world

might actually need that is probably a mark of pop-culture wisdom. Much of Frank’s dramatic tension comes from the disconnect between what’s artistically possible and what’s artistically likely. (They’d all hate Streets of Fire.) Still, while we can all safely decry the franchise-grubbing and box-office pandering of the new TMNT and Transformers, there’s a vast dark ocean of art in which it’s easy to get lost. Frank’s last act gently questions the objective judgment of the quality of art—if it fulfills you, it must count—but it’s the suggestion of a movie that knows it’s a consolation prize given to people we like too much to leave unhappy. For this movie, only overwhelming focus and aggressive outsiderness produce pure art. The rest is a marketing ploy. It knows the band before it got cool. n

n Life After Beth, teen protagonist Zach takes his undead girlfriend to the beach for a moonlit concert. He strums earnestly on his guitar about the night and his beloved, and gets about halfway through a verse before she snaps at him to shut up, snarling that the song is terrible. It’s the first sign that something’s wrong with her. In Frank, also out this week, protagonist Jon mentions that he dabbles in songwriting himself, and when hostile band member Clara demands he perform a song immediately, he does, grinding through a handful of abortive attempts at opening verses, despite a look on his face that tells us everything we need to know about his dearth of talent. It’s the first sign that something’s wrong with him. The two films share almost nothing else: It’s a fleeting moment for one movie and a crucial turning point for the other, and Life After Beth fumbles through half a dozen tones, while Frank relies heavily on its iron grip on the mood of the room. Still, it’s a rare thing to see a musical performance interrupted not by a plot point, but by the revulsion of its intended audience—and for Frank in particular, it raises important points about how best to watch it. Some people will need the help, since watching Frank is not necessarily a pleasant experience. This particular performance scene might be one of the most excruciating on screens this summer, but it’s not alone. There’s an awful lot of time spent inside Jon’s head, from his Twitter updates to his songwriting attempts, and as Jon grows less bearable, he becomes both funnier and more terrifying to behold. But there’s also a comforting narrative distance throughout much of the film, as if attempting to protect us from the full exhaustion of so many intense people trapped in a cabin and rehearsing day and night. For the bulk of the film, as they record their next
