usic and merriment took center stage last Friday, Aug. 22, in the intimate Celebrity Theater at the all-new Claridge Hotel, as “Lyrics & Laughter at the Jersey Shore” entertained a crowd of shore luminaries at the annual benefit for the Schultz-Hill Foundation. “Lyrics” came courtesy of Eddie Bruce and his 16-piece orchestra’s musical tribute to the legendary Tony Bennett, who recently celebrated his 88th birthday. “Laughter” — that was provided by comedian Tammy Pescatelli, whose credits include The Tonight Show, NBC’s Last Comic Standing and Comedy Central’s Standup Showdown. Local audiences may recognize Pescatelli from touring with Jenny McCarthy’s ensemble comedy show Dirty, Sexy Funny. Since its inception more than 10 years ago, the SchultzHill Foundation — a 501(c)(3) organization created by community philanthropists John Schultz and Gary Hill — has been supporting entertainment, history and arts programs in southern New Jersey. The benefit was chaired by Jeanne Eisele and A.C. Weekly columnist David Spatz; Ginny and Terrance McCarthy, the Claridge’s owner, were honorary chairs. n Pictured, above right: comedian tammy Pescatelli and bandleader Eddie Bruce gave entertainer Eddie Edwards (of celebrity impersonators the Edwards Brothers) a lift. n 18-day poker series that coincides with the casino-hotel’s July 2003 inception, the 12th annual Borgata Poker Open runs Sept. 2-19, and has traditionally produced some of the largest player turnouts on the World Poker Tour. Last year nearly 1,200 players participated. The series features variations on the game like Deep Stacks, Six-Max Bounty, Heads Up, Pot Limit Omaha, and Horse, plus ladies and seniors championships. A combined $6.6 million is guaranteed. On Saturday, Sept. 13, Borgata will host a special Charity Series of Poker Tournament to benefit the South Jersey Food Bank and the Atlantic County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. “We don’t stress about the actual album, but writing this was difficult because we want to do our best work,” he said. “We also want to make a connection with people. We want to make Train fans psyched, but also earn new fans. And doing that after 20 years of being a band is just not always easy. So the pressure is all about us.” Bulletproof Picasso also represented the first time the band worked without drummer and original member Scott Underwood, who left the group to write music and collaborate with other artists. “Scott’s a great guy and a great drummer,” Monahan told Zoinks! Online. “We think that he’s going to be happier doing what he’s doing, which is expressing himself as an artist and writing and doing that with other artists. So we’re psyched for him. [But] we have a great new drummer named Drew Shoals and he’s a lovely addition. He brings a whole new fire and energy to what we’re doing, as a band that’s been around doing it for a long time. So it’s fun for us, too.” Equally fun was spinning off both a wine and a chocolate company, which share the Save Me, San Francisco name. Monahan is a connoisseur of fine wine who enjoys a glass or two of the winery’s nice cold chardonnay at the end of the show. The company has also developed a pinot noir named — appropriately enough — “Soul Sister.” And, since cross-marketing and cross-promotion is everything in the business world, the winery even has a cabernet sauvignon named California 37 — the title of the band’s 2012 album. “Being from San Francisco,” Monahan told Zoinks! Online, “we thought, ‘How can we start bringing San Francisco to people that don’t get to go there?’ So we thought, ‘OK, first of all we’ll do it through our music; secondly, we’ll do it through our shows; and thirdly, let’s start by bringing some of the best [wine] San Francisco has to offer,’” he explained. Profits from the wine and chocolate company don’t line the pockets of the band. They’re donated to Family House, a San Francisco charity that’s serves as a home away from home for families of children with cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses. n

hen they first began chugging along the music charts in the late 1990s, some critics felt the pop-rock band Train — with its catchy songs filled with interesting little hooks and twists — would be little more than a short-run commuter line. The prevailing thinking seemed to be that Train would score a few big hits, register a platinum album or maybe two, do a few successful concerts tours and then spend the rest of their existence as a second-tier band hiding behind their hits and appearing as supporting acts ahead of some bigger artists. Silly critics. The San Francisco-based band will drop its seventh studio album, Bulletproof Picasso, on Sept. 16. Train has spent much of the summer setting its fans up for the new release with a concert tour that features many of their past hits and also includes the title track of the new album along with its first single, “Angel in Blue Jeans.” As Train’s one of the more fan-friendly bands on the circuit, expect founding member and lead singer Pat Monahan to come down from the stage after the first song to let ringsiders snap selfies with him — many of which will show up on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram by the time the band is doing its third number. Monahan said the band initially didn’t realize the metaphorical connection it had with the 20th century multimedia artist Pablo Picasso while it was creating the album and writing the title song. But the frontman now sees the similarities between the band and the realist artist. “It’s probably the best way to describe Train,” Monahan, 45, told the Web site Zoiks! Online earlier this month, “having dodged bullets all these years and still existing as artists.” Train just celebrated its 20th anniversary. It’s still looking for its first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, but it’s had 17 songs hit the Top 40 including four that reached the top spot on that list — from its first, “Drops of Jupiter” in 2001 to its most recent, “If It’s Love” and the ubiquitous “Hey, Soul Sister,” both of which spun off its 2009 platinum album Save Me, San Francisco. After Save Me San Francisco, Train waited two years to release its next album, California 37, which also registered platinum sales and featured the hit singles “Drive By” and “50 Ways to Say Goodbye.” After back-to-back platinum albums with hit singles, Monahan admitted there was pressure on the band as it began production of Bulletproof Picasso. But the pressure, he added, was self-inflicted.

hip hop virtuoso visits MIXX Saturday night as part of Borgata’s property-wide Endless Summer Party. Jermaine Cole, who goes by the stage name J. Cole, caught the rap bug in much the usual way, taken in by the top lyricists at the time while growing up as a teen in Fayetteville, N.C., in the late 1990s. His own hand at penning lyrics would later prove exceptional, catching the eye of Jay Z and signing to that exalted artist’s label, Roc Nation, in 2009. Studying under such eminence would likely have given anyone an edge, but Cole had the added advantage of an exceptional intellect, earning an academic scholarship to St. John’s University in New York City and graduating magna cum laude with a double major. He got high praise for his first two mix tapes, “The Warm Up” in 2009 and “Friday Night Lights” in 2010, before releasing his debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story in 2011. It hit No. 1 on both Billboard’s Top R&B and Top Rap album charts, netting Cole a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. He would earn a second Grammy nomination and release a second album (Born Sinner in 2013) that also reached No. 1—on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Cole appears at MIXX starting 10pm with DJs Ob-One and Melange also performing. At mur.mur nightclub during Borgata Nightlife’s Endless Summer Party, it’s DJ Fashen with opening and closing sets by DJ Doug Grayson on Saturday night. More

reetings and salutations — and just when you think it can’t get any better, it does. This has got to be the greatest summer of all time: After 42 years, more and more people have discovered the magic of Memories in Margate. And if you were there or listening to the live broadcast last weekend, you’ll understand. Folks came from all over to party with us. My good friend Dr. Paul Gross and his lovely wife, Anita. Tommy Glenn from Interstate Advertising and his lovely wife, Anne. My old friend Antonio and half of Ocean City were on the dance floor. And how about that St. Thomas Aquinas reunion, and Maria, who had a divorce party going on? And straight from the Rod Stewart show, the good Dr. Hussain and his lovely Roseanne, the good Dr. Hendler and his family, and from Family Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge, Greg Gentile and Paul Sottile and their families. And then the very beautiful Toni Valli, Frankie’s daughter, and her kids, Dario and Olivia, danced on in with my dear friend Gerry Polci, who worked with the Four Seasons when they appeared at Memories in the early ‘70s. Gerry now is a part of a group that re-creates the music of the Seasons and other groups of that era called the Hit Men and they’re the rage around the country. Even Robert De Niro was represented when Toni presented an invitation for the Geator and Frankie to be part of the Friars Club Entertainment Icon award dinner in October in De Niro’s honor. And so many more folks who made up the magic all weekend long. It’s hard to believe that summer is coming to an end, but Memories will go a couple more times after Labor Day. So make sure that you plan to be with us this weekend as the Trammps close the official season at Memories on Sunday. Our doors will open up at 4 with Sinatra & Friends, and later on the Trammps for two fabulous shows. Hope to see you then. Now let’s ask the Geator.
Got a question for Jerry? Write AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. More info on Jerry’s appearances is at www.geator.net. Keep on rocking, ’cause you only rock once!
Bensalem) — I play that song at the beginning of every summer season: “Wildwood” by Pat Kirby, a local singer who cut one album for Decca and then retired from show business. And you’ll hear the B-side, “This Summer,” this Saturday when I do my annual end-of-summer show from 6-7pm on WXPN; listen on 88.5 FM locally or worldwide at xpn.org. I haven’t heard anything lately about Eddie Murphy. In my opinion he was the most talented person to come out of Saturday Night Live. (Phillip E., Mays Landing) — I believe we will be hearing a lot more from Eddie, even though right now he’s taking a break from Hollywood to concentrate on music. He released an album last year that was well received, and he’s said eventually he wants to do live shows that combine music and comedy. As far as movies, there have been talks about a new version of Beverly Hills Cop, an HBO biopic of Marion Barry starring Eddie, and even a follow-up to Twins with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito called Triplets, but who knows which will ever see the light of day.
We were wondering just what will become of all your music and catalogs? Woody is a steady Saturday night listener while he makes our pizza. (Sandy Back in the early ‘60s you played a song called “I Lee, Lancaster County, Pa.) — I believe in my will I Met My Love in Wildwood,” or maybe “Wildwood have bequeathed them to the Smithsonian Institute in and You.” No one remembers this song but me. Washington, D.C., where people would have an opportunity Everyone thinks I’m crazy. Please help a “yon teen” after I’m gone to listen to some of the songs that otherwise out and tell me my memory is correct. (Pat Welsh, never would be heard. n

tronovo says. “He said Journey has enough ballads, and we made a really rocking Journey record.” Onstage, the recent tunes are delivered along with old favorites, such as “Faithfully,” “Any Way You Want It” and of course, “Don’t Stop Believin.’” “We can’t leave the stage without playing ‘Don’t Stop Believin,’” Castronovo says. “Fans love that song more than anything else. When we play Detroit and they hear the ‘born and raised in South Detroit’ part, they go ape crap, and that’s a great thing. I hope that we’ll be playing ‘Don’t’ Stop Believin’’ for a long time.” Castronovo believes the band will be together as long as Pineda is part of the act. “If he leaves, we’re not doing this anymore,” Castronovo said. “We’re not looking for another singer. We couldn’t find anyone like Arnel again. But he’s with us and it’s a great time for us.” How can Journey stop, since the band crafted the No. 1 song of the century? Yep: According to the Nielsen Company, “Don’t Stop Believin’” is the most popular song of the 20th century. “That’s amazing,” Castronovo said. “You think about all of the great bands of the last century, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the list goes on and on. And then Journey has the top song of the century — unbelievable. We love playing that song and all of the rest of the songs.” n

ourney has been in the news quite a bit lately, since the band’s ex-lead singer Steve Perry made news recently by singing his former band’s songs in public for the first time in 18 years. The reclusive Perry surprised the music world by belting out “Open Arms” and “Lovin’, Touchin,’ Squeezin’” with the Eels in Minneapolis in May. It’s been long documented, of course, that Journey and Perry went their separate ways in 1997. “We’re happy with Arnel,” drummer Deen Castronovo tells Atlantic City Weekly. “He’s amazing.” That would be vocalist Arnel Pineda, Journey’s massive-voiced frontman for the past several years — who the band’s fans have embraced with open arms. While cruising the Internet in 2007, guitarist-songwriter Neal Schon stumbled onto Zoo, a Filipino Journey cover band that Pineda fronted. “We were floored by Arnel,” Castronovo said. “But we didn’t know if the clip was doctored. We called him in — and he was better than he was on YouTube.” The band viewed Pineda as the perfect fit, and the Journey faithful have re-embraced the group, who now can often be found performing to packed sheds nearly 30 years after their heyday. “It’s something we don’t take for granted,” Castronovo says. “We know a lot of bands that hit like Journey did during the ’80s but are [now] playing to 700, 800 people — but we’re selling out 80 percent of the amphitheaters we play.” The band, which will perform Friday at Caesars Atlantic City, still records: Its latest, Eclipse, is a straightforward guitar-driven prog-rock album. “Neal said that we weren’t going to do any ballads with Eclipse,” Cas-

ian in to help the Band’s Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson reinterpret the Boss’s classic ballad of the shore town’s surreal, seedy underbelly. “’Atlantic City’ was amazing,” Bazilian recalls. “It was the first song we did,” he says, upon sitting down together to record the songs that would become the Band’s Jericho album, “and we all got along great.” That chemistry is in evidence on the track, which blends Bazilian’s mandolin, Hyman’s keyboards, Hudson’s accordion, Jim Weider’s acoustic guitar and Helm’s vocal to create a sound that’s as Hootery as it is Band-ish, turning Springsteen’s somber ode into a perversely celebratory romp. “They were true gentlemen,” Hyman says, taking a moment to pay homage to the late Helm, who died from cancer two years ago. “I loved his reading of Springsteen’s tune, and how he kept the sober lyric but added a little bounce and twisted joy to the proceedings.” Bazilian agrees: “Hearing Levon sing that— it gave ‘the Chicken Man’ a whole new meaning. You really pictured a guy with chickens in the backyard that he himself planned on slaughtering and eating.” And for all that he’s a huge Springsteen fan, Bazilian thinks their version of “Atlantic City” has earned a life
of its own: “You can’t do a Springsteen song better than Springsteen—but I think they equaled it.”
In recent years, the Hooters’ big summer concert tours have been in Europe; they’ve held onto mass popularity in Germany and Sweden even as their careers back home have gradually refocused around their various individual projects as songwriters, musicians and producers. And there are a lot of those. Together with Chertoff, Hyman produced last year’s EP The Dream Book by soulful Philly singer-songwriter Mutlu, blending reggae beats with R&B-inflected vocals and Turkish melodies. Hyman also enjoyed a flashback moment last year, reuniting with longtime collaborator Cyndi Lauper on her 30th-anniversary tour to perform a live rendering of the She’s So Unusual album (on which the Hooters served as her band—that’s Bazilian’s guitar lick and Hyman’s synths you hear giving rise to the sound of the ’80s on “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”). Bazilian, for his part, has been collaborating with several young performers over the past year. He’s been writing, recording and releasing songs under the band name 88 with English singer James Bourne, of the hit rock group Busted (recently reborn as McBusted).
And some of those songs have made their way over to the album Bazilian’s producing with West Virginia-born, New Jersey-based country singer Harmony Montclair. Meanwhile, along with fellow Hooters John Lilley, Fran Smith Jr. and Tommy Williams, both Hyman and Bazilian have also stepped out of their co-frontman roles to join the ensemble of Hooters drummer David Uosikkinen’s epic supergroup, In The Pocket, which gathers local luminaries like Ben Arnold, Jeffrey Gaines and the Soul Survivors to reinvent new versions of classic Philadelphia pop songs. Staring down the barrel of the Hooters’ 35th anniversary year, though, Hyman finds joy in returning, time after time, to the ongoing back-and-forth of the collaboration he and Bazilian share. “There’s an amazing bond and respect and appreciation,” he says, “and there are some real differences, which make it what it is. It’s that smush, how the molecules bounce into each other. We kind of ebb and flow, and that keeps it fresh.” n

When a couple of college undergrads start playing music together, as Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian did at Penn in the 1970s, and then proceed to keep playing music together for 40 years—as they’ve done as the songwriting core and dual vocalists of the Hooters, Philadelphia’s great rock band of the MTV era—the power of sheer statistics suggests some odd synchronicities will arise over time. Here’s one: Five years ago, the Hooters played the Spectrum’s “Last Call” concert before that storied arena closed forever. Now, this Saturday, the Hooters’ Atlantic City gig at Revel marks the final weekend of live shows there as the bankrupt casino prepares to shut its doors for good. “It’s not our fault,” Hyman deadpans. “I swear.” However one feels about the venue, there’s a really good to catch its swan song: The Hooters, wherever they’re playing their uniquely genre-defying blend of rock energy, Jamaican backbeats, Celtic jigs and bluesy roots—even when it’s the otherwise staid Capitol rotunda in Harrisburg, where they were honored last year with a command performance—turn that stage into a hootenanny to make the rest of the world’s distractions fade into happy oblivion. Plus, here’s another bit of synchronicity: When the legendary folk-rock group the Band decided in the ’90s it was time to cover Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City,” their producer at the time just happened to be longtime Hooters collaborator (and fellow Penn college pal) Rick Chertoff. So he called Hyman and Bazil-

magine your feet pounding a determined rhythm alongside the railroad tracks on a cool, grey spring morning—that’s the beat. Imagine a grassy wind whipping across your face as mist-drops tap your skin willy-nilly— that’s the mandolin. Imagine the sun punching a beam of light through the icy clouds, barraging the sky till it turns blue despite itself—that’s the whistle riding atop the accordion. And imagine, suddenly, the train flying past you, slamming waves of motive force into your chest so you can’t tell your own heartbeat from the roar of the metal beast—that’s the drums, and the guitars, and the bass, and now you’re flying too. You’re listening to the Hooters.

ooking ahead to the weekend of Sept. 13-14, the Atlantic City Seafood Festival returns to Bader Field. Sponsored by Good Time Tricycle, the city of Atlantic City and the CRDA, this two-day extravaganza celebrates its third birthday by hosting more than 50 restaurants and culinary personalities in an open-air atmosphere. Attendees will be provided not only the opportunity to sample some of the region’s finest cuisine, but a chance to experience Atlantic City from an entirely different perspective, along its glorious, sun-dappled back-bay section. Among the luminaries expected to par-
ticipate are the Dougherty clan’s Bally’sbased casual seafood bastion Harry’s Oyster Bar; the Tropicana’s fine-dining Fin; cutting-edge local gastronomic treasure the Iron Room; Harrah’s swaggy South Philly newcomer Martorano’s; the culinary team from the Borgata; two-time chowder cookoff champs from the Chart House at Golden Nugget; and a crab-eating contest sponsored by The Pier Shops at Caesars-based Phillips Seafood. Best of all, this family-friendly event is free to attend all weekend long, courtesy of a CRDA grant. Expect to see a diverse combination of exhibitors, local artists, children’s activities, live music and cooking demos, including seven from local resident Nicole Gaffney, a finalist on 2014’s Food Network Star competition. Wine seminars and tastings, plus a tent called The Great Brews of NJ will offer adult libations. Visit the festival at acseafoodfest.com online for more. n

pair of seafood-related events dominate the Atlantic City food scene for the next several weekends, as late-summer begins its inexorable journey toward autumn. The first, Golden Nugget’s Bubba Gump Shrimp Fest, returns for the fourth year on Saturday, Aug. 30, noon-6pm on the shimmering Deck of that masterfully restored marina-district facility. “When our company first saw that property [which at the time was the Trump Marina] the skeleton was very appealing, but it just needed some TLC,” says Scott Tarwater, corporate director of wine and special events for the Nugget’s parent corporation, Landry’s Restaurants. Since then, in addition to a full-on building overhaul, Landry’s has overseen the installation of multiple proprietary restaurant brands, including sumptuous steakhouse Vic & Anthony’s, revitalized seafood purveyor Chart House and quality Italian/pizza house Grotto. According to Tarwater, Landry’s restaurant empire is slated to expand significantly this fall, just to our north. Launching almost simultaneously in New York City, he says, will be Morton’s Grill, a “derivative” of Morton’s Steakhouses offering expanded bar options and small plates of tapas-style portions; Saltgrass Steakhouse, a casual, Texas-oriented beef emporium; and Mastro’s Steakhouse, an elegant, fine dining room with “visually stunning” decor. JEREMY IRONS
He’s had some recent duds like R.I.P.D., but the inimitable Bridges has paid his dues enough to earn a few get-outof-jail-free cards. Currently starring in the long-awaited adaptation of The Giver, this 64-year-old Oscar winner has played a washed-up musician (in Crazy Heart) and a Coen Brothers loser (in The Big Lebowski) with equal aplomb. And he’s never shown fewer signs of slowing down.
At 65, Irons hasn’t only retained his rigor as an actor, he’s also kept his sophisticated sex appeal intact. Known for everything from Die Hard With a Vengeance to TV’s The Borgias, he has always succeeded in staying relevant and potent. As we speak, he’s filming Batman v. Superman as Alfred.
SAMUEL L. JACKSON Jackson, 65, could reprise his role as Jules in Pulp Fiction, and we wouldn’t even know that two decades have passed. Jackson is as much of a badass now as he was when he was spouting Bible verses with a Jheri curl, and moreover, he doesn’t look much different. He’s had his fun in genre films like The Avengers, but the flick that reminded us of his clout was another Quentin Tarantino triumph, Django Unchained.
LIAM NEESON Neeson was always a formidable actor, but the revenge thriller Taken cemented his rebirth as a bona fide action superstar, despite being over the hill. Now 61, he’s since appeared in the Taken sequel; Non-Stop; and The Grey, and will be back this fall in A Walk Among the Tombstones. It helps that Neeson brings some true thespian chops to a genre that’s starved for them, but it’s his signature scowl that keeps viewers hooked.

STELLAN SKÂRSGARD His son Alexander may be the one getting more attention these days, but Skarsgård, 63, has an unfazed spirit that would put him right at home on a randy show like True Blood. The Swedish actor isn’t always dashing into the fray (he often has people for that), but he won’t shy away from something like Nymphomaniac either.
