MY FRIEND, THE ARTIST wANT TO GO LOOk AT ART THIS wEEk? YES , YOu DO — HERE’S wHY

O

n Saturday — as you’ll read in greater detail on page 26 — the annual Atlantic City Boardwalk Art Show will convene scores of local artists to showcase the amazing breath of creativity the Shore community has to offer. And it’s not the only such gathering that’ll be happening nearby, either. Also on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10am to 5pm, the Underground punk shop in historic Smithville presents its semiannual Smithville Artwalk, which gathers a smaller but no less dynamic community of South Jersey’s most creative natives. One of those is my old friend Christopher Clark, also known professionally as Onkel Chrispy, who’s been shaping colorfully provocative brain-candy on paper ever since we met decades ago in grade school in Northfield, and who’s been singing the praises of the Smithville Artwalk for, if not quite that long, then certainly a while now. So I asked him: Why? Why should we be so excited about seeing what the area’s working artists — an obscure bunch, to be sure — are up to? Here’s what he told me: “First and most obvious, by attending and purchasing something, you will be not just supporting but encouraging a local artist. The act of creative exploration must always be

nurtured, in both young and old. These are the people that make our world look and sound more beautiful, and fill the world with new ideas and ways of looking at our universe. “You’d be putting your money back into the local economy, into the hands of local people, where it should be. “The artwork for sale at the Smithville Artwalk, like the people selling it, varies greatly in style. You will not find safe, cookie-cutter stuff — you’ll find beautiful pieces that challenge you both emotionally and intellectually, all crafted with love. “The people who organize this event do it for free — they don’t make a cent — because they love art, creativity and artists. Art, not unlike music and comedy, is one of the most noble endeavors one can pursue — because it makes the human condition more bearable. To facilitate an event to allow that to flourish is equally noble. “Finally, if nothing else I have said convinces you to attend, then come by and see me. I don’t have much this time around, but I’ll give you a button and a hug, because Onkel Chrispy loves you.” Well — I’m convinced. What about you? n More info: facebook.com/smithvilleartwalk

y the time Trump Plaza goes dark on Sept. 16 — marking the third casino to close in two weeks and the fourth this year — Atlantic City will have lost more than just hundreds of gaming tables and thousands of slot machines. Each property had an entertainment personality uniquely its own that that was rarely, if ever, static. Those personalities changed based on marketing strategies, focus groups, customer tastes and the emergence of new artists on the music and comedy scene. No property saw a bigger change in its entertainment direction than Showboat, a property initially designed, built and marketed to appeal to a more blue-collar guest than its competition. Never was that more evident than when the property opened on April 2, 1987. Instead of a main showroom — which every Atlantic City casino had — Showboat’s biggest venue was a 60-lane bowling alley that was supposed to attract a largely local crowd, similar to the original Showboat in Las Vegas. But bowling in an Atlantic City casino proved a tough sell. Showboat did have a ballroom, the Mississippi Pavilion, where the legendary Bob Hope performed as the opening-night attraction and where a headline artist would occasionally perform. One floor below, at the Boardwalk end of the casino floor, was the Mardis Gras showroom. The 400-seater, separated from the casino floor by a thick curtain, was too small to host headliners and not really big enough for large-scale production shows — so it often presented smaller revues featuring a “name” comedian (like Rip Taylor) in the middle of the show. Nearly 20 years after it opened, Showboat underwent a startling transformation. It had long since abandoned the bowling alley and converted the space to one of the city’s better casino buffets. And the Mississippi Pavilion was repurposed — for tens of millions of dollars — as the 2,300-seat Music Hall, the centerpiece of the House of Blues branding and expansion of the property in 2005. Most musical artists who played the room said it was one of the best venues on the circuit. But HOB created a decidedly split personality at Showboat. By day, the casino attracted a largely older clientele — “blue hairs,” as some casino marketing folks often indelicately referred to their retired customers — who enjoyed playing the slot machines and eating at the buffet. However, once House of Blues began installing some rap and hip-hop artists in the Music Hall, the senior guests made a beeline for the exits. HOB packed ‘em into the Music Hall, but those customers weren’t really into nickel and quarter slot machines — or any casino games, for that matter. That situation didn’t change until Caesars Entertainment worked a franchise arrangement with HOB owner Live Nation, which gave the casino company more of a say in the types of acts booked into the Music Hall. Meanwhile, Trump Plaza’s main venue — the 750-seat Trump Plaza Theater — was known to insiders as the “secret service” showroom. It was difficult for guests to find because it was tucked away between floors: one level up from the casino, one level down from the floor with all of the restaurants, meeting rooms and ballroom. But once people found the room — especially in the late

1980s, when Trump Plaza was the world’s highestgrossing casino — they were treated to artists who rarely played rooms that small. The property opened in 1984 as a partnership between casino neophyte Donald Trump and experienced gaming hall operator Harrah’s, which used its longtime relationship with Sammy Davis Jr. to bring the legendary entertainer to the theater for a 10-day series of shows with a different guest star each night including Bill Cosby and Ann-Margret. Flush with cash — and eager to make a statement — Trump Plaza went fishing for major names to play its small showroom. It snatched Liza Minnelli away from Bally’s Grand (formerly the original Golden Nugget). When Tony Orlando and Dawn decided to reunite for the first time in 10 years, they had their choice of offers of where to launch their reunion tour; Trump Plaza had the best offer. The comedy-magic team of Penn & Teller first performed in Atlantic City at Trump Plaza and filmed scenes from their first movie at the casino. Paul Anka, a major high-roller draw, signed several long-term deals with the casino. Up until the mid-1990s, Trump Plaza offered “name” artists on weekday nights when most houses were just doing weekend shows. But as its gaming fortunes waned, so did the casino’s headliner policy. It rarely presented entertainment during the off season and relied more on fixed-cost production shows over the past five years. Revel never really had a chance to develop an entertainment identity. The property bragged it would only present relevant, world-class entertainment in its 5,500-seat Ovation Hall, one of the country’s finest venues. The room opened in May 2012 with a four-show run by Beyoncé in what was essentially a preview of her “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour.” The show attracted bipartisan political celebrities; First Lady Michelle Obama and her two daughters sat in a sky box directly below New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and his family. But once it became obvious that casino customers weren’t buying into Revel’s marketing strategy, it quickly switched its booking strategy. The casino tried to mix in established artists and classic rock acts like Aretha Franklin, Aerosmith, The Eagles and Barry Manilow with more contemporary artists like Death Cab for Cutie, Alice in Chains and the Avett Brothers. It also began taking advantage of what had been Atlantic City’s most underutilized venue, The Social: a 400-seat combination bar, lounge and showroom smack in the middle of the casino floor. The Social was supposed to be programmed with headliners who had name recognition but not necessarily the drawing power to play the big room. Sadly, by the time Revel’s ever-changing management team began actively using that room, it was too late to save the property. n Watch the Emmy-winning Curtain Call with David Spatz, Saturdays at 6pm on WmGm-TV NBC40.

T

he Ocean City Airport Festival and Aerobatic Air Show both return to the O.C. Municipal Airport (26th Street and Bay Avenue) next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14. The Airport Festival runs 10am-4pm Friday and includes a ground display of unique and classic aircraft including planes from World War II. There’ll be a model airplane demonstration with tiny jets that reach speeds of 100 miles per hour, and a chance to meet performers in Saturday’s Aerobatic Air Show. The Aerobatic Show starts 1pm Saturday and spans the beaches from 6th through 14th streets. Many of the nation’s top aerobatic pilots will perform, including the world’s largest air-show team, the Aero Dynamix Formation Sensation. Check out the paper airplane contest and several other children’s activities, too. Call 609.525.9300 or visit ocnj.us. Both events are free and sponsored by the Ocean City Tourism Commission. This Saturday, Sept. 6, and on the other side of the 9th Street Bridge in Somers Point, Grammy winner and recently inducted Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez (the original drummer for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band) will be part of the 37th annual Good Old Days Music Festival at Kennedy Park. Lopez, local guitar virtuosos Billy Walton, Bob Campanell and Danny Eyer, and the talented Dan Burke Band comprise the music lineup this year, making it one of the best in festival history. There will also be antique cars, children’s activities and plenty of food and drink. Visit SPGoodolddays.com or Somerspointbeachconcerts.com for more —R.S.

he quirky kind of late-night revelry that’s defined Boogie Nights since its concept creator, Dave Pena, unveiled it to Atlantic City in November 2007 is pretty much summed up by the Cougars ‘n’ Cubs Ball, taking place the first Friday of every month at the Trop’s retro nightclub. That’s when all the Mrs. Robinsons in town (those 40 and over) gain free admission to prowl the dance floor for their fresh-faced Benjamins (men 21 to 29), who also gain free entry between 9-11pm. Not a cougar or cub? That’s okay, you can get in early and free too—just swallow your pride and don an afro wig. The Cougars ‘n’ Cubs Ball has been a hit since its inception, featuring fun contests for prizes including overnight stays, comped dinners at Trop restaurants, Boogie Nights VIP packages and more. Every Friday is also $5 night drink specials at the club and halfpriced bottle service. The first five years or so of Boogie Nights’ existence in A.C. happened at Resorts. Pena, with the blessing of Trop management, brought the nightclub to its current 8,000-squarefoot location in May 2012, nearly doubling its size and adding amenities like the Party Pit, a retro-themed gaming area at the club’s entrance, and VIP booths and lounges with nostalgic names like That ’70s Suite, the Awesome ’80s Lounge, the Swingers Circle, and others. So successful was the A.C. Boogie Nights that Pena opened others in St. Louis, Baton Rouge, Lake Tahoe, and Lawrenceburg (Indiana). Along with a giant disco ball and the illuminated dance floor below it, the A.C. club is outfitted with vintage-type collages, ‘70s and ‘80s furniture and memorabilia, pop-culture themed cocktails, go-go dancers, hula hoopers, celebrity impersonators and beloved characters like Roller Girl, Boogie Beaver and The Streaker (calm down, it’s a flesh-toned body suit). Pena—who also owns the Planet Rose Karaoke Bar and Cocktail Lounge in the Trop— says sensory bombardment is crucial to Boogie Nights’ success; one of the first things guests see upon entry is a colorful logo stenciled in graffiti across an entire wall. “Growing up in New York, I’d always see these bright, beautifully graffitied subway trains that I think is very representative of the ‘70s and ‘80,” he says. “I wanted a piece of that New York City street-artist vibe in the club, and this hits the nail right on the head.” Boogie Nights is open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday starting at 9pm. And note: Thursday is ‘90s Night, which has been extended through the end of September. n

O

nce again, greetings and salutations. For this, our last column of the official Memories in Margate summer season, I want to acknowledge the fabulous people who made this one of the best seasons in the history of Memories, starting with our managers, Lindsey Ervin and Joe Downey, who balance being school teachers the rest of the year with running a nightclub during the summer, and my righthand man Willie Jacovini, who goes back to the early days of Memories when he worked as a bartender there. Our outstanding bartenders — Deserie, Samantha, Jodi, Joey, Adam, Kathy, and Matt — and barbacks — Gavin, Joe, Anthony G, and Anthony R. Our gracious attendants, George and Shay, and front-door staff Nick and Susan, who got engaged the last week of the season. And our great security staff, all Rowan University football teammates and roommates — Chris, Josh, Steve, Zaire, Joe M., and Cullen. Special thanks to the local businesses who sponsor our live broadcasts from Memories every weekend on Kool 98.3: Yuengling Breweries, Family Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram, Laffey Bucci & Kent, Wills Eye, Uncle Bill’s Pancake House, A-Plus Roofing, Primo Hoagies, Café Tazza, Chickie’s & Pete’s, Black & White Invitations, Seminole Hard Rock Casinos, Golden Nugget, and La Costa Lounge. A big thank you to Chris Gualteri from Barrels, who took care of the Geator’s parties, along with the folks at Tony Luke’s and Paesano’s, and to Chris, our chef from Paesano’s, not only for making the best sandwiches but for being 100 percent professional in the kitchen. And we can’t forget Joe, our meteorologist, and his wife, Mary, for making the most of the beautiful sunsets right outside the door of Memories all summer long A special hello to all the folks from out of town who listened to our live broadcasts from Memories on KOOL 98.3 and Cruisin’ 92.1. Last but certainly not least, thanks to you, the folks who came from near and far to create the incredible magic of Memories in Margate. As I have said in the past, you are the reason I love doing what I do, and we will continue to keep each other young all year long. Remember, Memories will remain open weekends in September, and stay tuned to our radio shows weekdays from 7-9pm on KOOL 98.3 FM and our online calendar at Geator.net for all the info you need about our whereabouts throughout the year.

Next week, a recap of the past season. And now, instead of our usual questions, a change of pace — let’s play trivia. Here goes:

QUESTIONS: 1. We mentioned Key Largo in this column a few weeks ago. This actor had a small part in Key Largo but was best known as co-star of a famous TV series. His real name was Harold Jay Smith and he was the son of a Canadian Mohawk tribal chief. Who is it? 2. Who was Fred Astaire’s dancing partner in his screen debut? What was the movie? 3. Who was the only actress to appear in two films with Marlon Brando? 4. These songs — “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” “Tower of Strength,” “I Wake Up Crying,” “Blue on Blue,” “Don’t Go, Please Stay” — were all written by the same composer. Who was it? 5. The Jackie Wilson hit “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher” was originally recorded by what group?

ANSWERS: 1. Jay Silverheels, who played Tonto in The Lone Ranger from 1949 to1957. He was a star lacrosse player in Canada nicknamed Silverheels when he was discovered by comedian Joe E. Brown, who got him his first job in Hollywood as a stunt man. 2. Joan Crawford, in 1933’s Dancing Lady. Later that year Astaire and Ginger Rogers made their dancing debut together in Flying Down to Rio. 3. Jean Simmons (Désirée in 1954 and Guys and Dolls in 1955). It would have been three if Brando hadn’t dropped out of The Egyptian (also 1954) at the last minute. 4. Burt Bacharach 5. The Dells. It was actually written for the group, who recorded it in February 1967, five months before Jackie did it. n Got a question for Jerry? Write AskTheGeator@ acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. More info on Jerry’s appearances is at www.geator.net. Keep on rocking, ’cause you only rock once!

now what there’s more of in Atlantic City this month? Art. The annual Boardwalk Art Show is slated for Saturday at Kennedy Plaza. And it’s arguably the most inclusive event in town: “It’s open to anyone,” says Boardwalk Art Show assistant director of operations Jessica Jozwiak. “Anyone can try and be in it. You don’t have to be a professional artist. We make it easy for anyone to be out there right on the boardwalk in front of people. All you had to do was apply for a space! We’re a place in which new artists can be discovered and where veteran artists can receive exposure.” In 2013, there were more than 90 artists and four interactive artists on the boardwalk. Expect more this time around: The show will include a variety of fine arts, with fiber arts, pastels, pottery, photography, painting and sculpture on display. “I think we’ll have something for everyone,” Jozwiak says. What’s more, show directors have been working since winter to beef up the number of participatory performance artists who’ll be on the boardwalk to engage the crowd. “We’ve invited more interactive artists who’ll perform,” Jozwiak says. “There were some interactive artists last year, and the reaction was good, so we’ll have more this year.” For example: A.C.-based body painter Heather Hires will appear, painting bold, dramatic designs upon faces and bodies for children as well as adults. There will be a

number of spray-paint graffiti artists on hand as well: Kurt Rentz, for one, a 29-year-old Philadelphia artist/entertainer who’s surprisingly precise with an aerosol can. The folks behind the art show elect to hold the event between Labor Day and the Miss America contest since it’s a window that represents the last big blast of the vacation season. “There will be a lot of people strolling those boards, since Labor Day is huger than huge in Atlantic City,” Jozwiak says. “You have those coming in for volleyball in Atlantic City (see “Best of the Best,” facing page) and you have the early birds who come down for Miss America. We want to show that there is more to Atlantic City than the obvious. We want to show how great it looks with so much great art! We think we can top last year.” Live entertainment will be based in Kennedy Plaza, and will feature dancers from the Atlantic City Ballet Company, jazz musicians courtesy of the Chicken Bone Beach Foundation and a variety of local acts. There will also be more $2,000 in prizes given out at the show this year, Jozwiak says: “That’s not bad.” n

been on the AVP pro tour since 2007. A former MVP of the Four Points Sheraton Classic, she’s currently ranked sixth in the world. “I love to play,” she grins. “It’s awesome.” And yet, culturally speaking, Day claims to be as much nerd as jock: “It’s reality. I love math. I would love to be a calculus teacher.” As a paragon of both brain and body, then, she rolls her eyes at those who criticize the skimpy beach attire that volleyball players wear. “I always thought that was kind of crazy,” Day said. “What do they want us to wear? A sweatsuit? That just won’t work — the sand would stick to the material. It would be hot and uncomfortable. Wearing a bikini is perfect for what we do. I really don’t hear that many complaints about it. It’s our uniform. That’s what we wear when we battle it out to try to win some serious money [$150,000] in Atlantic City.” She spikes a parting shot at the potential audience: “You have to see this. It’s fun — and it’s free. What a great deal!” n

ho would ever guess that one of the coolest events in Atlantic City falls in between Labor Day and the Miss America pageant? Check out the second annual Do AC Pro Beach Volleyball invitational, which will be held this Friday through Sunday on the beach between what were the Showboat and Revel casinos. “It was a lot of fun to play in Atlantic City last year,” says volleyball star Emily Day, talking with Atlantic City Weekly by phone from Los Angeles. “It was so cool to play right by the boardwalk. We had big crowds come by to watch us play! I loved it because I could walk to the sites right from our hotel room.” Day particularly enjoys getting the chance to play on an actual beach. “That doesn’t happen as much as I would like,” she says. “I love playing on real sand — and the sand in Atlantic City is great for volleyball. There’s the wind off of the ocean, and it’s just so picturesque.” One cool thing about volleyball players is that, compared to many pro athletes, they’re decidedly approachable. “We don’t mind meeting anyone who’s into volleyball,” Day says. “We love to sign autographs and pose for pictures.” She and her peers are superior athletes, too. Day, who stands six-foot-one, has

for the city as a whole, especially if your establishment has good craft beer on draft. “If you have any decent craft beer people will find you,” Williams says. “Beerfests for us are huge. They fill the restaurant.” Williams and his wife, Jane, who co-owns the restaurants with him, says an array of factors have led to Atlantic City’s growing craft beer scene. Events like the Resorts’ Beerfest and the Atlantic City “Celebration of the Suds” Beer and Music Fest, which is going into its 10th year next spring and draws some 50,000 visitors, are certainly big factors because they bring people into the city for experiences other than gambling. Beer-focused events at Atlantic City restaurants have been a contributing factor, too. Dinners featuring brews by craft beer favorites Dogfish Head held this year at the Continental and the Back Bay Ale house are examples of that.

And then, of course, there’s the emergence of local breweries. “For South Jersey, what’s really made a difference is the rise of Cape May Brewing and Tuckahoe,” says Williams. Tuckahoe Brewery, located in Dennisville, and Cape May, out of (where else?) Cape May, each opened quite recently — and quickly drew accolades in a state starved for good locally brewed beer. Both will be pouring at the Resorts Beerfest. But then, the country as a whole is starved for something other than the yellow fizzy lager we used to chug in dorm rooms. While the beer industry considered in its entirety may be losing ground to wine and spirits — beer’s share of the alcohol market has slipped from 56 percent to 49 percent since 1992 — the craft segment of the beer world is in the midst of a boom that shows no signs of slowing down. We’re talking big, Neil

Armstrong-magnitude strides. Last year, the craft market grew by just over 17 percent, part of a trend of double-digit growth that has last five straight years. There are now over 3,000 breweries in America — the highest total since before Prohibition. (So many, in fact, that Dogfish Head founder Sam Caligione recently told Bon Appétit an “incredibly competitive” time for craft brewing is on the horizon. “There is a bloodbath coming,” he warned.) In any case, events like the Resorts Craft Beerfest and dozens of others held throughout the state are proving to be invaluable ways to reach drinkers who are discovering that beer is a lot richer, more complex and intriguing than they realized. That has certainly proven true for Muller and the folks at Flying Fish. “They [craft beer fests] are our biggest marketing expenses,” says Muller. “You’re not going to see us running a commercial on the Super Bowl. The best way to introduce your beer to people is to let them try it. Most people really want to learn, so it’s really great. It’s a no-risk way to try a beer.” The second annual beerfest includes live music by the band My Hero Zero, food intended to be paired with beer, and contests and prizes throughout the afternoon. n

etween the razzle-dazzle of the casinos at one extreme and the minimalist joy of the beach at the other, Atlantic City hasn’t traditionally screamed “sophisticated beer town” to most visitors. But that’s history. Today, regional brewers and local beer enthusiasts — not to mention this week’s second annual Craft Beerfest at Resorts — are aiming to change that. Gene Muller, president and founder of Flying Fish, the Garden State’s largest craft brewery, says the changes to the city’s beer scene have been difficult to miss. “When we first opened [in 1996], there was not much craft beer presence in Atlantic City,” Muller says. “It really wasn’t in the bars and casinos. In recent years that has really changed. People are seeking a better experience.” On Saturday, Sept. 6, beer enthusiasts from throughout the region will be able to get a taste of those changes at Resorts, when a wide selection of breweries will be pouring dozens of their best brews. Breweries slated to be pouring include Dogfish Head, Victory, Oskar Blues, Troegs and several others. New Jersey will be well represented, too, with brews by Cape May Brewing Co., Flying Fish, Tuckahoe Brewing Co., River Horse and others on hand. In total, more than 60 beers will be available. Drawing that kind of beer power is a dramatic change for a city that just a few years ago lubricated itself on complimentary cocktails hastily consumed in front of slot machines. Kyle Williams, co-owner of three Atlantic City establishments known in part for their beer — Back Bay Ale House, Scales Grill and Deck Bar, and Vagabond Kitchen and Tap House — says these big beer events are good

e mp i r e’ s e nd boardwalk empire’S FINAL SEASON BEgINS SuNdAY — ANd PROduCER TERRY WINTER TELLS uS WhAT TO ExPECT

O

that the final season of Boardwalk Empire (the eight-episode season begins Sunday, Sept. 7, 9pm) will bring the series’ main character’s compelling story “full circle.” “We go back and show Nucky as a child in the late 1800s,” Winter says during a phone interview with Atlantic City Weekly. “We explore his family and his years growing up … including the [young] Commodore, Nucky’s parents, even Gillian as a young girl.” While the muchanticipated fifth season does include elements of the past — characters and decades unexplored in previous Steve Buscemi in seasons — it also boardwalk empire shoots forward to 1931, a year chosen as a “perfect bookend” for the series, which began literally the night Prohibition went into effect over a decade beforehand. “Although Prohibition lasted a few years later, we picked 1931 for the final season because the talk of ending Prohibition was already going on,” Winter says. “It was already unraveling and talk of repealing the law was heating up.” Additionally, he says, the year was an important one for the country especially in relation to the show: “Al Capone was the biggest gangster in the world in 1931. He was a superstar. That same year, Lucky Luci-

ano put together ‘The Commission,’ basically setting up how the mafia would operate in the decades to come.” Although Winter wishes he could have included the death of Arnold Rothstein (played by Michael Stuhlbarg), a major character in the series, the history of organized crime as well as in Nucky’s gangster stratosphere, jumping to 1931 (and leaving out Rothstein’s death) for the final season made sense to him and the show’s production team. “Some characters die, and you wonder what would have happened if you had written the character’s storyline differently,” Winter says, “but characters come and go. People come and go. When Jimmy died, everybody asked, ‘How are you going to replace this major character on the show?’ and then Gyp Rosetti [played by Bobby Cannavale] shows up and everyone’s like: ‘Holy shit! Who’s this guy?’” Among the things that Winter will take away from his time working on Boardwalk Empire is discovering how much of a microcosm Atlantic City was during the early 20th century for the entire country. “Atlantic City was a destination,” he says. “There was Coney Island, but that was more of a city experience. Atlantic City had it all — the nightlife, the entertainment — all on the ocean.” There are a variety of elements from the show and actual time period in American history that mirror events still in the national conversation today, he says, from women’s rights, racism, the notion of evolution and certainly organized crime and drug trafficking. “Prohibition really was like the drug trade of today,” Winter says, adding that Prohibition

set into motion a series of events that would lead to both the modern drug epidemic and worldwide distribution of illegal drugs. “I am very proud of the work we’ve done on the show and can’t wait until my kids are old enough to get into it,” he says, noting that he’ll surely revisit the series on DVD in the future. “I’ll always have those DVDs (of the series) on my shelf, which represent the past five years of work. That means a lot to me.” So, what was one of Winter’s most memorable moments working on Boardwalk Empire? “Working with Martin Scorsese,” he says without hesitation. “We were standing around on the set on the first day of shooting the first episode and a car pulls up and he gets out and says, ‘OK, let’s rehearse.’ I couldn’t believe he was actually there to work on this project. You know, I thought we’d get a call that his schedule had changed and that he wouldn’t [be able to make it], but he pulls up and we were just like, ‘Wow! This is going to be incredible.’ And it was just incredible working with him.” Legendary filmmaker Scorsese’s working relationship with Winter has blossomed since that first day of shooting five years ago, with the two teaming up for the 2013 Scorsesedirected The Wolf of Wall Street film (nominated for several Academy Awards, including for Winter’s screenplay and Scorsese’s directing) in addition to an upcoming project for HBO. “We’re finally set to shoot the pilot,” Winter says of the new project — a series concept he and Scorsese have been working on for the past couple years with Mick Jagger, based in 1973 New York City with a focus on the emerging music scene. “It was a pivotal time for music,” Winter enthuses. “In 1973, punk and hip-hop were both [being invented], New York City was a drug-addled city, much different than it is today, and there were a lot of important things happening in the world of music [and the country]. Bobby Cannavale who played Gyp Rosetti plays a record producer. We’re really excited about it.” Sounds like another hit. n

n the Tuesday morning before Labor Day weekend, Terry Winter is getting ready to shoot the final episode of the HBO original series Boardwalk Empire, wrapping up the fifth and last season of his baby — the award-winning drama set in Atlantic City (as well as other U.S. cities from Chicago, New York and Washington down to Miami) during the Prohibition era. After virtually living and breathing A.C. for the past five years — as well as the myriad of complex characters he and his writing team and fellow producers created for the acclaimed show — Winter, the series’ showrunner, says the final day of shooting is “bittersweet” for him. He marvels at what a tremendously gratifying ride he’s had since HBO handed him a copy of Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Nelson Johnson’s book Boardwalk Empire several years ago and asked the former writer and producer on HBO’s The Sopranos if he thought there might be a series in there. “We’ve had an amazing team,” Winter says, “and I am so proud to have worked with everybody on the show — from Martin Scorsese to my good friend Tim Van Patten to the outstanding actors. It was an amazing run. We accomplished everything we set out to do, and I think we made the perfect choices along the way as far as the actors and with every decision we made.” Winter, whose Nucky Thompson character (played by Steve Buscemi) in the HBO series is based on the real Enoch “Nucky” Johnson — a bootlegger and major player in Atlantic City politics during the early 20th century — says
