n most respects, it was just another day at the office as we finished shooting an episode of Curtain Call, the entertainment-driven show I’ve been hosting and co-producing on WMGM-TV NBC40 for the past eight years. Yet it was anything but routine on that October night in 2006, because the person we’d just spent 30 minutes chatting with on camera was more than just another casino headliner. She was a comedy icon. But beyond that, she was a friend of nearly 30 years. She was Joan Rivers, and we quickly became friends after the first time she performed in an Atlantic City casino. Joan was a member of the Class of ’78: She was among the early artists to play at what was originally known as Resorts International Hotel & Casino, the first casino to open on the Boardwalk, and where we were taping on this particular night. breaking down and packing up the lights, microphones and cameras along with our associate producer, Tom Morgenweck, Jr. Joan and I stood out of the way and made small talk about things that wouldn’t have been very interesting in front of the cameras. The subject of marriage came up. Joan had remained single after her husband, Edgar Rosenberg, committed suicide in 1987. She knew I’d been divorced for several years, and—like everything else—she had a very strong opinion about the institution of marriage. “Marriages should only be good for seven years,” she said. “That’s it. You can renew it if you want, but after seven years, you should be able to just walk away with no strings attached. If I was still married to Edgar, I’d kill myself.” My response was much quicker than my ability to selfedit. “He beat you to it.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 10 >>

Joan Rivers performing in 2009. (Photo courtesy Underbelly Limited / Creative Commons 2.0)

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 >> We all momentarily froze in place — Jake and Tommy, Joan and me. Being friends was one thing. But I was pretty sure I’d crossed the line with that remark, even the very wide and forgiving Joan Rivers line. I immediately took Joan’s hand in mine, but before I could even apologize, she burst into laughter. “Oh, that’s funny,” she said between laughs. “That is so (expletive) funny.” I tried to apologize; she wouldn’t hear of it. “There’s nothing to apologize for,” she said. “Funny is funny. I’m going to use it tonight.” I walked her to her dressing room next door to say goodbye. I planned to watch from the back of showroom, but wouldn’t go backstage after the show. I knew she’d have a big crowd of friends and casino customers waiting to see her. About an hour later, in front of a sell-out crowd in Resorts’ Superstar Theater, Joan began riffing about marriage. She explained how marriages should only be good for seven years, because after that, spouses begin hating one another. She said if she was still married to Edgar, she’d kill herself. But he beat her to it. The audience exploded with laugher, and Joan—a master of comic timing—let the laugh happen. But before moving on, she quietly and quickly said into the microphone, “Thank you, David.” I smiled from my spot in the back of the room. Then I made a mental note to e-mail her and ask for the $5 fee she paid whenever she bought a joke. Joan was 81 when she died on September 4. In spite of her reputation for her perceived bitchiness, blunt talk and uncensored language—she could drop the f-bomb with the best of them—Joan was one of the most sensitive and caring people I’ve ever met in or out of show business. Every time we spoke on the phone or backstage or at the dinner table, the first thing she

wanted to know was “how’s the family, how’re the kids.” She wanted to know what was happening in my personal life first. Only then could we talk shop. She was that way from the beginning of our friendship until the last time we spoke, which was about a year ago. As the nature of casino entertainment changed, our in-person encounters became fewer. She began doing one-night stands in Atlantic City, and she usually preferred driving in from New York to work two shows in one night and then returning to the city to sleep in her own bed instead of a hotel. The news of her emergency hospitalization, of being placed on life support and then of her death hit like a sucker punch. Nobody saw it coming. No one was ready for it, least of all Joan. Between all of her gigs—comedy shows, TV programs, personal appearances, QVC— she was already booked well into 2015 and beyond. And Joan never missed a paycheck. When she turned 80, I asked if she’d given any thought to reducing her work schedule so she could enjoy the fortune she’d amassed. She reacted in mock horror but with a great line, which I suspect had a core of truth. “Are you crazy?” she asked me. “I can’t stop working. I’m supporting three plastic surgeons and their families!” In the past six months, death has robbed us of three of the brightest and sharpest comedy minds ever. There was David Brenner, Joan’s former comedy tour partner; Robin Williams, who Joan considered “so above all of us”; and now Joan, who was—whether she liked it or not—the grand dame of comedy. If there’s a comedy club in heaven and they put those three on the same bill, it will only prove that God really does have a sense of humor. n

round these parts, late summer/ early fall is the best time of year for hitting the links — and a prime time for charity golf tournaments to pop up all across South Jersey’s magnificent courses. A couple of longstanding events are on the horizon that have gone a long way to foster humanitarian causes. At the Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in Galloway Township, the 12 annual Golf Klassic Benefit for Holy Redeemer Jersey Shore Food Pantry takes place Friday, Sept. 19, on the Pines Course. (That’s one of two 18hole courses at Seaview, designed in 1927. The other, the Bay Course, was built in 1914 and is home to the annual ShopRite LPGA Classic.) This year’s Golf Klassic includes breakfast, a shotgun start at 9am, lunch at Seaview, and an awards ceremony starting around 1:30pm for the top-two finishers in three categories (low-gross men and women, and mixed doubles). There will also be contests for longest drive, straightest drive and closest to the pin, and any hole-in-one wins a new car on the designated par 3. The cost is $175 per golfer ($700 per foursome) and is tax deductible. The beneficiary, the non-profit Holy Redeemer Jersey Shore Food Pantry, has served the local community since 1989 and distributes non-perishable food to thousands of individuals

ately Atlantic City has been bringing to town many of the biggest names in country music, and is sort of carving out a niche for itself as the genre’s de facto capital of the northeast coast. The most notable events of the summer, of course, were when country superstars Blake Shelton (July 31) and Lady Antebellum (Aug. 3) drew tens of thousands to the resort town for free concerts on the beach. The pattern perseveres Friday night when the upstart country duo Swon Brothers performs at Resorts starting 9pm. Zach, age 29, and Colton, 26, Swon have long been popular presences in their native Oklahoma, growing up in a family steeped in southern gospel. They first came on the national radar screen, though, as finalists on season four of The Voice. They placed third that season as part of Team Blake (taking pointers from vocal coach Shelton, a regular on the NBC reality hit series) but their playful, charismatic personalities made them tops among the viewing audience. Singers/musicians since early childhoood, the pair recently signed a contract to Arista Nashville Records. They’ve released a popular single called “Later On,” have an album in the works to drop later this year, and were nominated for Vocal Duo of the Year at the 48th Country Music Awards in 2013 (along with Dan + Shay, who opened Shelton’s A.C. beach concert, and Florida Georgia Line, which headlined Boardwalk Hall in May). ina Davuluri, a girl from Syracuse, N.Y., who for years entered and won beauty pageants to help pay for school, is now finally ready to retire her crown. This Sunday, Sept. 14, at Boardwalk Hall, the 2014 Miss America — and the first Indian American to win the contest — will help congratulate her successor. Whoever that woman is, she won’t be an Indian American, and probably won’t be entertaining us with a traditional Bollywood dance. These are just a few details about Davuluri, 25, that instantly demanded our attention to a competition many of us have never even watched. That, and the firestorm set off by the social media trolls who called her a terrorist and a Muslim extremist. It’s exactly those sentiments Davuluri has been challenging for the past year while traveling across the country promoting her platform, Celebrating Diversity Through Cultural Competency. And she is far from finished. We caught up with Davuluri to ask about her transition into “forever life,” as Miss Americans call it, her Mindy Kaling fan crush, and why, despite her dedication to raising awareness of STEM education — that’s science, technology, engineering & math — becoming a doctor might not be in the cards for her after all.

We’re just a few days from crowing the next Miss America. Is this a bittersweet moment for you or do you happily accept that it’s time to pass the crown? Or both? It’s been an incredible year. I’m lucky that I had the opportunities that I did. But it’s time to spread my wings and fly, as they say. I’ve had an amazing year of promoting my platform, and I still get to continue

Where were you when I was 10? [Laughs]

Speaking of role models, a lot of women I look up to and respect today are also my peers. People like outweighed low moments, but I do remember one moment And it’s easy for someone to hide behind a Twitter handle you and Mindy Kaling and other women of color who that has stayed with me: I was speaking at a high school back without thinking where it’s going. But for every negative are breaking those cultural barriers. Do you also have in October, specifically to a group of high school girls. It was comment, I received positive words of encouragement from peers you look up to? I’ve enjoyed following [Kaling’s] cameant to be an intimate discussion. I remember walking in and hearing one of the girls whisper, “I thought Miss America had to be white.”

Americans and people across the world. I went into this organization wanting to be the first. I knew it would change the face of who [Miss America] was. I went in because I wanted to reach out to that young girl who could say, Were you hurt by that? I don’t think I was hurt by it, but ‘This year’s Miss America looks like me.’ I can’t tell you how I know this is a core age group, exactly the age I’m trying to many young girls, of all ethnicities, who have said thank you. reach. All I can really do is give the best message I can, be open I have genuinely felt such a positive response this year with and candid, and maybe she rethinks what she said. I gave my my platform. But I’m only one person. If it weren’t for the 15-minute speech and did the Q&A and in the end, I try to do people, the students at the colleges and the universities and the best thing for these girls. Maybe that’s one person’s mind all the other people coming together to support me, none of that I changed. There’s always gong to be people like that. All this would have been possible.

reer. She reached a demographic that I wanted to reach out to. She’s really broken boundaries and done it in such a funny, unique way, she’s so relatable. I did get to meet her very briefly. The day after I won, she and I were both on the [Live With] Kelly and Michael show. I had a total fangirl moment where I couldn’t get anything out of my mouth. n

I was the first Miss America it out there: Promoting diversity through cultural of Indian descent. [Laughs] The high moments have totally because I wouldn’t have been true to myself.

I was definitely one of those girls who, with a mixedrace background, never had a sense of belonging. I know there are so many young girls out there right who are trying to navigate complex identity issues. The only difference is now they have people like you to look up to, where as I can’t recall really having those types of role models. Del Monte’s DelMo Sports has partnered this year with the Atlantic City Seafood Festival, which will host the award ceremonies following the races. “What a nice complement to the triathlon,” Del Monte says. It’s just one example of the triathlon’s versatility, he notes: “There’s so much for so many people — but as an event planner, you have to please everybody. I look at what I do like a wedding planner, but instead of one bride, I have 1,300 brides. Every athlete is unique, and I want each of them to go away with a positive experience. “ Del Monte used to live in Philadelphia, where he toiled as a teacher, but was drawn back to the beach and is now at home in Wildwood Crest. “I love it here,” he says. “There’s no place like it. Not just Wildwood — Atlantic City is one of the greatest places in the world to run. It feels great running on that boardwalk; it really has one of the greatest surfaces. I love the view from the Pier Shops at Caesars. I love being a South Jersey guy. I love being a South Jersey beach guy. I have the most fun at my triathlons — and this weekend is going to be amazing.” n

t’s a bona fide boom: After first getting underway four years ago with 300 participants, this year the Atlantic City International Triathlon will see more than four times that many hit the bay, Bader Field and Boardwalk Sunday morning. Some 1,300 participants have signed up to take part in the triathlon, whose main event is a standard international triathlon: a 1-mile swim, a 20-mile bike and a 10K run. Several variant sub-races will be running, too. There’ll be an International Aquabike, which is a 1-mile swim and 20-mile bike with no run. This year’s new addition is the Sprint Triathlon for para-athletes: a quartermile swim, 20-mile bike and 5K run. Then there’s the Kids’ Duathlon Race: a half-mile run, 2-mile bike and a final half-mile run, all on the safe confines of Bader Field. To top it off, there’s Swim AC, a straightforward 1-mile swim (after all triathletes have entered the water). The national anthem will be sung at 6:25am and the various races will commence shortly after. “I think we have something for everyone,” triathlon CEO Stephen Del Monte says. “And it’s something great for Atlantic City. The city has been great to us — and I think we, in turn, show that Atlantic City is a wonderful place with an incredible amount of potential. It’s amazing how much this event has grown in Atlantic City.” The weather for the event looks perfect. “It does — don’t jinx it!” Del Monte jokes. “But this is a special event that goes on rain or shine. People show up regardless; we’re expecting a nice crowd.”

which we merrily devoured with a soup spoon thoughtfully provided. Insalata capra — mixed greens blended with diced apple, candied walnuts, goat cheese and cranberries and a Champagne vinaigrette — proved a lively middle course. This salad, as well as many items on the bill of fare, is available in smaller “taste” portions, enlightened thinking we wish more kitchens embraced. Like those earlier figs, my entrée was a verbally described add-on. Arctic char, a really extraordinary fish, was arranged turbaned atop a delicate cipollini onion puree. Decidedly sweet, these tiny pearl onions — native to Italy, naturally — crafted a blend, along with a whisper of heavy cream, pairing harmoniously with the seafood. A cousin of salmon, char is a smaller, cleaner fish with a filet paler in color. Like most cold-water dwellers, char works well

with assertive flavors, and the cipollini blend was nothing short of a stunning formulation. The fish itself was no less ideal, sautéed golden without the slightest hint of residual oil. (What was it we said about “specials” earlier?) My dining partner’s choice, capellini with crab, brought together skinny strands of house-made pasta tossed with plenty of jumbo lump crabmeat and peas in one of the finest blush sauces we’ve ever encountered. Gossamer thin, the capellini clung to this tomato-based blend while conveying other ingredients throughout each forkful. Artfully spun into an ivory serving vessel, it arrived steamy, aromatic and pristine. We greatly admired the way this pasta had been professionally sauced and presented, offering no superfluous liquid behind in the

ate summer, with its abundance of locally sourced ingredients, is perhaps the ultimate time to recognize Italian cookery. Unlike French or Asian cuisines, often technique-oriented, the food of that peninsula nation is generally based on seasonality and availability. In southern New Jersey that means tomatoes, peppers, onions and fruit, all staples of the Italian pantry. A recent evening at Egg Harbor City’s stylish Assaggio — “taste” in Italian — served as demonstration. Beginning with a nightly appetizer addition truly evocative of September’s bounty — figs stuffed with goat cheese, wrapped in prosciutto — the trio of exotic bundles was carefully heated, just enough to crisp that prized pork product and soften chevre. A wide indigo smear of reduced balsamic beneath provided a complimentary closing coda, resulting in a harmonious confluence of intense sweetness and contrasting salinity. Marvelously balanced, each lovely little nibble brought a rush of intense flavor, crisped prosciutto also possessing textural contrast. We’ve always said, if you’re gonna call something a “special,” make it so. This starter fully delivered on that promise. My first selection, clams Posillipo, brought a bowl brimming with a baker’s dozen bivalves, lovingly steamed in light, pleasant white wine and butter sauce. Adding accent were diced tomatoes, fragrant, majestic basil leaves and one small garlic clove, allowing perfume but not the potency of that bulb’s influence. The clams themselves tasted spectacular, plated with impeccable timing, preventing any of the stringiness that can sometimes result. Moist and tender, each mouthful was a pearl of pure seafood pleasure. Equally enchanting was the broth; pale golden and laden with natural clam essences,

deep bowl when fully consumed. Desserts included a tall slice of Reese’s pieces chocolate cake and traditional tartufo, made in-house. Both were quality sweets, but the tartufo — presented in a cool geometrically quartered pattern and showcasing a bright red cherry center — was another masterpiece of culinary composition. The ambiance at Assaggio is equally conducive to an upscale experience; plenty of space between tables and a classy, mirrored bar with seating for a dozen providing happy-hour small plates and live music Fridays and Saturdays. On this night it was Jim and Bonnie, a brother and sister duet of jazz guitar, piano and vocal talent. Mary Reyes and her son — bartender and “right hand man” Dan Leston — have been owner/operators for three years, and have fashioned a relevant, evolved Italian dining concept at Assiaggo. And youthful head chef Jorge Barreto, 33, delivered expressively, expertly on all sampled. A veteran of more than a decade in this kitchen, Barreto has taken food in an always well-regarded facility toward bold, newer directions, while maintaining an uncompromising spirit of excellence. Along with Roberta’s Joe Muldoon, we’d consider him to be among the most brilliant under-40 culinarians currently plying their trade locally. n

LOVE IS STR ANGE

It’s a term that hearkens back to the control and classification system that predated ratings: the Hays Production Code, enacted in 1930, which forbade religious profanity, miscegenation, homosexuality, “ridicule of the clergy” and childbirth. It also included a clause regarding “willful offense to any nation, race, or creed,” which begs questions about how many films released under its auspices ever got made. (The Hays Code did use this clause to reject anti-Nazi films until Warner Brothers used FBI papers as grounds to greenlight 1939’s Confessions of a Nazi Spy.) The Code didn’t expressly blacklist the branding “of people or animals,” sympathy for criminal types and safe-cracking, but strongly cautioned against them. The absurdity of this menu of the forbidden, taken together, reads exactly like the morality play it was meant to be. It was also a code regularly broken by moviemakers outside the studio system, as well as sidestepped with sly workarounds that have made movie history. (The kiss scene from Notori-

Name: LONGPORT MEDIA (00LOON); Width: 10 in; Depth: 2.63 in; Color: Black plus three

ous had a dozen kisses that clocked in at the requisite three seconds each.) Occasionally, however, the Code would make a suspiciously serendipitous change that would later accommodate a major studio release, such as the amendment allowing “damn” to be used except as “offends good taste”—a loophole passed a month before the release of the blockbuster Gone with the Wind. By the 1950s, the Hays Office had lost its once-absolute powers, and changing social norms meant that the clauses listed in the Code were enforced less and less strictly. However, a prevailing concern among the makers of queer film in Not Yet Rated is that their movies were being punished, not for their content, but for their very premise, as if the very presence of homosexuality is dangerous. It’s an absurd notion, until it isn’t. Until the MPAA can catch up with this social norm, please know you can go see Love is Strange with a light heart. Bring the kids. n

ove is Strange, a beautiful, nuanced slice of life drama about newlyweds Ben and George and the found families around them, comes out this week. It’s one of the most mature comedies I’ve seen this summer, relying less on gut-busters than on sly, understated moments that are simultaneously funny and wrenching. It’s also rated R. Given that it has no violence, almost no profanity and no sexual content, the rating has gotten some notice. Why, it would seem that it got rated as inherently “adult” simply for being about a gay couple! Sadly, almost no one is surprised. The assignment-at-will of ratings by a board of unknowns was the subject of 2006’s documentary This Film is Not Yet Rated, which took the MPAA to task for arbitrary, obscured decision-making. Several filmmakers appeared to discuss the specifics on which their films had been given the dreaded NC17, often the kiss of death for wide distribution—and thus, any hope of a profit. The notes were depressingly expected; violence seemed perfectly acceptable for mainstream audiences, while women deriving pleasure from sex or any sort of homosexual romantic content was grounds for raising the defenses. The film’s most telling sequence is a shot-for-shot comparison of sex scenes—all those involving straight sex were rated R, and anything queer got an NC-17. Of course, one of the main complaints the movie makes is how vague the MPAA is allowed to be about something so crucial. Mary Harron received notes about “the entire tone of the film” for American Psycho; she later discovered the note applied not to the murders, but the threesome. However, as there’s nothing in Love is Strange that could be considered sexual—save one brief moment of a married couple debating whether they can get away with having sex in a guest room, after which they snuggle chastely—another MPAA note from the documentary comes most sharply to mind: “Aberrational behavior.”
