SHRIMP

EDITOR’S NOTE

or the first time, users of social media will be invited to formally congregate in A.C. this weekend for an event called SoCon at the Trump Taj Mahal. The conference boldly declares it’s “for people with passion for a topic or a cause. People who want to lead, but don’t know how... who want to build those connections for their cause but aren’t sure where to begin.” Sound a bit nebulous? Maybe — but in a way, that’s kind of the point. Everyone is on social media now, even your great-aunt. According to the Pew Charitable Trusts, 30 percent of the entire American population gets at least some of their regular news from Facebook. Basically, we’re becoming a user-based society. So figuring out how exactly to spend two days talking about that is bound to be a little tricky. Throughout the weekend, Internet-based challenges and games will abound. With workshops ranging from “Digital Psychologist” to “Get a Job,” attendees get to learn best user practices from Internet pros and savvy amateurs alike.

Keynote speaker Lance Strate delivers his talk, “So you want to change the world? A hitchhiker’s guide to subversive thinking” on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4pm. Strate is known for his incisive global media analysis, including his book The Legacy of McLuhan, which revisits the philosophy of 1960s thinker Marshall McLuhan — who famously posited that technology, media, politics and culture were all intersecting at one single focal point. Back in the day, McLuhan focused primarily on television — but in the Internet era, his work feels downright prophetic. Co-headlining the con are comedian Michelle Tomko and personal fitness coach PJ Shiridan. And Saturday at 8pm, Fan Girl Review hosts a match of Cards Against Humanity. Given the awfulness and awesomeness of that game, attendees are sure to get both yuks and yucks. Hey — isn’t that pretty much what most folks use social media for in the first place? n More info: socontaj.com

or the past six years, the final weekend of September has served as a time of tribute for all New Jersey military personnel who perished during the three U.S.involved overseas conflicts since 2003 — Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn. The N.J. Run for the Fallen will traverse four counties and 186 miles Friday through Sunday, Sept. 26-28, stopping to present a flag and personalized biography card to family members at dedicated mile markers along the way. The run starts at Cape May Lighthouse and ends at the Veterans Memorial in Holmdel. Its second of three legs starts Saturday at Somers Point Memorial Park at 6:25am and travels through Linwood, Northfield, Pleasantville, EHT, Absecon and Galloway, ultimately ending in Toms River about 12 hours later. This year 29 active-duty military personnel ages 19 to 55 are participating, many of whom will have done so all six years thus far. The event is an extension of a cross-country run that began on Flag Day 2008 — June 14 — and went from Fort Irwin, California, to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. The New Jersey version started the following year. Call 732.688.6745, e-mail mike@njrunforthefallen.org or visit NJRunForTheFallen.org for more.

Some sensational fall festivals return this weekend. The fourth annual Golden Nugget Craft Beer Fest is Sept. 27-28, and offers a beer dinner Friday 7-10pm at the Live Bar ($69), a craft beer blowout all weekend starting noon on the Deck, a beer-and-sushi pairing at Lillies all weekend ($25), and a craft beer tasting Saturday 8-11pm in The Grand with music by Don’t Call Me Francis ($49). See goldennugget.com/AtlanticCity. The Knights of Columbus Italian Festival is Saturday 10am-5pm in the Historic Towne of Smithville. There will be arts and crafts, children’s entertainment, Italian food, wine tasting, a beer tent, bocce ball, vendors, folk dancing and music by the Atlantic City All-Star Band featuring Tony DeLuca. Admission and parking are free. See kofcitalianfest.org. The Margate Fall FunFest by the Bay is Saturday (11am-6pm) and Sunday (11am-5pm) spanning six blocks of Amherst Avenue. Family friendly activities include amusement rides, marine educational exhibits, back-bay boat rides, live entertainment, an appearance by Miss New Jersey Cierra Kaler-Jones, and Steve & Cookie’s annual dog show. n Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27-28, about 7,000 bicyclists will push themselves through plenty of pain and discomfort to help ease the burden on others dealing with something much worse. The 34th annual Bike MS: City to Shore is the largest two-day event of its kind on the East Coast, and the second largest in the United States (behind another in Texas). Last year alone it raised nearly $6 million for the fight against multiple sclerosis (MS). Several distances and route options are available for participants. The traditional route travels about 75 miles from Cherry Hill to Ocean City on Saturday, then the reverse order on Sunday. It is fully supported with catered rest stops, bike support staff and transportation. Go to nationalmssociety.org for more. —R.S.

eddings are steeped in tradition — no matter whom you are or where you live. But what if you’re not interested in wearing the same dress your mother did, getting married in the same location your sister did or wearing something blue? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Plenty of brides search for ways to make their special day as unique as they are. Here are five ways to put your own special spin on this classic tradition.

A guest book you’ll use. Signing the guest book is a common tradition at most weddings; you’ve probably signed a few in your lifetime. After the wedding is over, however, this priceless keepsake often disappears into a box never to be seen again. Break from tradition by creating a guest book you’ll actually use. Take a trip to the book store with your partner and browse the coffee table books. Once you find one that interests both of you, claim it as your guest book. Your wedding guests can sign their names in the margins and afterwards you’ll be left with

You’ll dance on a traditional wood floor while looking up at the stars — what could be more original than that? Don’t forget to rent a tent so that weather doesn’t dampen the mood. You can find more unique flooring ideas at RentalHQ.com, where you can locate your local rental store.

3

Treasure the memories. Get your guests involved in the event by placing blank cards and pens at each seat location. Ask your guests to write about their favorite memory of you and/or your spouse. Collect all of these cards and turn them into a scrapbook for a treasured keepsake.

4

Prepare a menu that is uniquely you. Chocolate fountains were once unique and elegant, but now they’re commonplace. Don’t despair, though, because there are plenty of unique edible snack options you can include in your special day. If you’re getting

married in the blistering heat, rent a snow cone machine to offer your guests some sweet relief. If you and your spouse are big movie buffs or your wedding has a Hollywood theme, rent a popcorn machine to complete the look. And for the bride who’s still a kid at heart, nothing captures that better than renting an authentic cotton candy machine.

5

Find the color that suits you. Maybe wearing something blue doesn’t suit you, but perhaps you’re not too wild about black and white either. At many venues, though, these colors are the only choices you have when it comes to tablecloths and napkins. Remember, you don’t have to settle; you can provide your own materials simply by renting them. This opens up a color palette of limitless options. If you are planning a fall wedding, look for napkins that reflect the colors of the leaves. Did you meet in college? Choose linens in your school’s colors. Whatever shade speaks to you, you can find it and give your wedding a look no one will expect. Keep the tradition, but be uniquely you with options limited only by your own imagination. To learn more about what you can rent and how renting can help you create the wedding you’ve always wanted, visit RentalHQ.com. (BPT)

INJECT FUN PERSONALIT Y INTO A wEddINg CEREmONY & RECEPTION

W

hen planning a wedding, you’ll receive plenty of advice via to-do lists in bridal magazines, from friends and coworkers who’ve already been through the wedding process and even from professionals in the industry who have helped many couples achieve their “I dos.” The advice might feel a bit overwhelming, but most brides and grooms figure out how to sift through the stories of wedding successes and disasters to personalize all the final touches on their special day. By showcasing their personalities through different aspects of the wedding, guests will remember the special day for years to come. Here are some ways to inject your personality into a wedding ceremony and reception:

1

Tell or show your story. Every couple has the “how we met” and “how we got engaged” stories, and often they can be incorporated quite easily into the ceremony or the reception. For example, if you met at a sporting event, consider using sports paraphernalia as table centerpieces. Or if he proposed in a beautiful field of wildflowers, incorporate wildflowers into the decorations for the ceremony or the bouquets held by the bridesmaids. A couple of ways to tell personal stories are with a small write-up in the wedding program or a picture slideshow during the reception.

2

Incorporate personal details. Every bride has a style. Some brides create an elegant wedding, while others prefer the edgy urban style. Some brides want an outdoorsy look to their weddings, and some think the >>>

>>> vintage look matches their personalities perfectly. No matter your style, look for ways to incorporate that style in the details of the wedding. For example, start off with your wedding invitations. Invitations by Dawn has laser-cut wedding invitations to match your personality. Elegant lace, romantic flowers, creative fonts and delicate cutout shapes allow brides to hint at the wedding theme and show off their personality from the very beginning. All wedding invitations can be personalized online with fonts and colors, allowing a couple to match the wedding style perfectly. In a rush? Invitations by Dawn can process and deliver wedding invitations in a week.

3

Write your own vows. Personalized vows allow a couple to share with each other, and their guests, how much they love each other, and how they plan to spend the rest of their lives together. The Internet has many examples to help a couple get started, and your guests will be impressed by the creativity and individuality that goes into the vows

as you pledge your love to each other.

4

Play some favorite tunes. If you’re planning a religious ceremony, ask the minister performing the wedding if there are any restrictions on music played. Churches typically will ask that music performed or played during the wedding ceremony be religious or classical, but the music played during the exit march can often be secular. For example, if the couple loves Star Wars, they could exit the church while the Imperial March is played. If the church is not open to secular music at all, another option is to play a favorite secular tune during the grand march into the reception venue. With these simple touches, you’ll be able to inject plenty of individuality into your wedding ceremony and reception, allowing the guests who are celebrating with you to connect with your joy and excitement of matrimony. The personal elements will have everyone talking about your wedding for many anniversaries to come. (BPT)

very girl dreams of her fantasy wedding. It usually includes a Prince Charming standing next to her at the altar, saying “I do,” while surrounding by friends and family in a fairytale atmosphere. Now it’s time to turn that fantasy dream into reality. And while Prince Charming has been replaced with Mr. Right, the rest of the fairytale doesn’t have to change. Every bride should feel like a princess, and here are some ways to pull off the special wedding:

1

The dress: The right wedding dress and accessories can make any bride look like a princess. A strand of pearls around the neck for a Cinderella look or a long, decorative braid down one side of the head completes the Rapunzel look. Many brides love the look of a simple tiara woven into an elegant

hairstyle. And the dress can have a full or puffy skirt, or long flowing tresses to really bring out the princess style. Disney also has a collection of designer princess cut dresses based on several of the Disney princesses.

2

The invitations: Set the tone for your fairytale wedding right from the start with Disney Princess Wedding Invitations from Invitations by Dawn. The collection features eight elegant princess invitations inspired by Ariel, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Tiana and Snow White. You’ll love the deep embossing, the shimmer paper and the raised print that looks like an invitation from royalty. The flowers and motifs will capture the eyes of your guests and evoke a sense of fairytale nostalgia, having them anticipating the wedding itself.

3

The decorations: Shimmery gossamer, twinkle lights and decorative candles provide beautiful touches to help make the fairytale a reality when it comes to your wedding and reception. If you are a crafty person, use DIY crafting sites like Pinterest to find centerpiece and table decoration ideas you can make yourself. Also ask your florist and cake decorator if they have any suggestions on decorating your reception and the wedding hall in a fairytale theme. They may suggest a fountain centerpiece, or creating a forest backdrop behind the cake to help enhance the theme. If you’ve been dreaming about your wedding for many years, you probably already have some ideas for those special romantic touches that will make your wedding memorable and special. Share those ideas with the wedding specialist helping you plan your special day, and let the magic happen. Your guests will be awed by how you pulled together the entire fairytale theme, from the invitations to the special gifts they’ll take home to remember your special day. (BPT)

eciding to get married is one of the biggest and most important decisions many people will ever make. According to The Knot and WeddingChannel.com, the average wedding costing more than $28,000 — the cost of a new car or a down payment on a home, so your next biggest decision may be figuring out how to pay for it. With that in mind, many couples are opting to tie the knot at home. Although hosting your special day in your own backyard can cut costs and give you more flexibility, you must address some critical details before you walk down the aisle.

BEgInnIng BASICS First things first: make sure you have enough space to accommodate everyone. If you need to make extra space, get creative.

Did you know you can fit more guests at round tables than rectangular or square ones? You can also invest in a short-term storage locker, which can temporarily house excess furniture as well as valuables you don’t want left out among wandering and rowdy guests. You’ll also want to check into local noise ordinances, which might require a permit to host a loud party. You might need a permit to park cars along your street, too. PREPARED AnD PRotECtED In addition to these important basic details, couples need to make sure they are protected if anything goes wrong on their big day. Joe Vahey, vice president and product manager at Erie Insurance, suggests happy couples think about the following three key insurance issues when plan-

19

Personal ProPerty Keep valuable wedding gifts protected. Depending on how many guests attend your event, you could end up with thousands of dollars’ worth of gifts. Since personal property like this is covered by your homeowners insurance policy, make sure to talk to your agent. They’ll look into your policy’s personal property limit — it’s usually a percentage of the value of your home — to ensure everything is covered. liability issues It’s important to make sure you’re protected from liability, too. If your uncle falls while doing the chicken dance or your cousin trips while diving to catch the bouquet, you could end up in trouble. While some liability coverage is included on standard homeowners policies, you’ll want to review the liability limits with your agent in order to assure you have enough coverage. Additionally, it’s always wise to consider adding an inexpensive personal catastrophe liability policy (sometimes called an umbrella policy) to your insurance. Having this extra protection will provide you and your future spouse with needed peace of mind on a hectic day.

rings Wedding rings are an important part of the ceremony, a symbol of your special bond. Consider “scheduling” the rings rather than relying on the blanket coverage provided by a standard policy, which may have a value limit. A scheduled ring has additional coverage up to the specific value of that ring, so you won’t have to worry about replacing a lost or stolen ring. looking good Once the behind-the-scenes details have been addressed, it’s time to pull back the curtain and focus on putting on a spectacular show. Properly welcome guests by getting your landscape in tip-top shape and making sure to clean your house top to bottom a week before the wedding. Consider hiring professionals to lessen your responsibilities leading up to the big day. Keep wedding decor and flowers in line with the look and feel of the home. Getting married at a beach house on the lake? Then, stick to a more casual, understated feel. If you’re hosting a black-tie gala at a friend’s mansion, don’t be afraid to embrace elegance and opulence. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate your big day, planning ahead to ensure you’re prepared and protected is one way to enjoy it worry-free, with the one you love. (bPt)

MISS’D AMERICA PAGEANT Sunday, Sept. 28. 7pm. harrah’s Resort, 777 harrah’s Blvd, A.C. hosted by Carson Kressley (pictured above); featuring The Village People. Tickets: $35–$100. Info: missdamerica.org, 609.226.5430.

that we aren’t looking for the sassy queens, and I mean that in the best possible way,” he says. “We’re looking for the ones who deliver an amazing performance, whether they have talent or not.” Kressley says the men who enter the pageant are split into two very different camps when it comes to drag performances. They’re either very glamorous and are primping right up until the moment they go on stage — or they’re quasi-comedians who are more interested in campy and vampy performances and are spoofing themselves as much as they are the Miss America Competition. With Miss’d America “you get a little bit of the glamour and a little bit of the humor, and you see a little bit of everything,” Kressley says. And with this competition, beauty is often in the eyes of the beholders: “They don’t necessarily have to be the most beautiful one, but I think it’s about having the total package,” he adds. “Having a great talent routine, being engaging with the crowd, and also looking great. I think all of those things come into play. I think the person who’s going to walk away with the crown is the gal who’s going to do all of that.” Since most of the contestants applied for their spots online, Hill says the process, which included submitting photographs, revealed some excellent dragsters. So excellent, he said, that one of the wanna-bes had Miss’d America producers wondering if he was really a guy — or a woman trying to sneak her way into the show. “We were trying to figure out the best and most delicate way to ask him if he really was a guy,” Hill laughs, “because we just couldn’t tell — and we didn’t want to offend him.” n

pageant, created in the early 1990s by local businessmen and philanthropists John Schultz and Gary Hill, bares little resemblance to the loosely produced show they used to present on the rooftop deck of their former Studio Six nightclub the night after Miss America crowned a new queen. “The whole idea was to give the local people who worked on [Miss America] a night to have fun and relax after working like crazy during pageant week,” Hill explains. “It gave them a chance to catch on what they may have missed during the pageant, so that’s where [Miss’d] came from. We raised a few bucks for some good causes and had some fun. But I don’t think we ever thought it would grow into this.” Actually, the organizers never thought they’d survive the considerable clout of the Miss America Organization, which originally was none too thrilled with Miss’d America because of its ties to the gay community. The MAO initially banned its people from attending. And because the “Miss’d America” name was thisclose to “Miss America,” there were threats of lawsuits. But things eventually loosened up because of two events: In 1993, the night after Miss America Leanza Cornett crowned her successor, the former title holder — the first Miss America to embrace AIDS prevention and awareness as her pageant platform — made a surprise appearance at Miss’d America. The following year, Mary-Kay Marks, the widow of the late Miss America president Al Marks, agreed to be a Miss’d America judge. After that, the Miss America Organization dropped its opposition to the campy drag show. The show raises funds for the Greater Atlantic City GLBT Alliance and the SchultzHill Scholarship Foundation, which then divides the take among various local charities. Since its inception, the pageant has donated over $225,000. Over the years — minus a brief hiatus in the mid-2000s after Schultz and Hill sold their entertainment complex — Miss’d America has morphed into a much bigger production. Now it features production numbers, guest stars and a more pageantlike look and feel while still retaining its drag show elements. In some respects, it mirrors the competition that it lovingly spoofs. The disco-era singing group The Village People return to Sunday’s Miss’d America Pageant as special guest stars. Celebrity stylist Carson Kressley, who has parlayed his original TV gig on Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy into a robust entertainment career, returns to host the event. “I think what makes Miss’d America more interesting than a regular beauty pageant is

ike its beach-bar brethren, LandShark Bar & Grill has wrapped up another summer season of hot music, cold beer and a steady flow of frozen concoctions. Unlike the others, though, LandShark is the only bar-and-grill on the east side of the A.C. Boardwalk that stays open 365 days a year — yes, even on holidays — and maintains a daily live music slate through the end of September. (It then condenses to four days a week, Thursday through Sunday nights, starting in October). The 8,000-square-foot component of the Margaritaville complex — and a $35 million initial investment by Resorts’ principal owner Morris Baily and brandname owner/music luminary Jimmy Buffett — LandShark is sited on 200 linear feet of beachfront where the bygone Steeplechase Pier once was. And it’s one of just two LandShark B&Gs in the nationwide Margaritaville conglomerate, the other being in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Among the more popular musical acts to perform there regularly is the acoustic guitar duo Five Times Famous, comprising South Jersey natives Andrew Foster and Justin Cruz. They’re slated to play every Thursday, Friday and Saturday (58pm) through October — and you can check out their massive repertoire online at: fivetimesfamous.com/song-list n

again in the bouncy and melodic “Reason” with a sound that’s quintessential Vince Clarke. The Violet Flame is full of moments where opposites come together. Heartbreaking lyrics weave through beautiful melodies; raw pain floats above sweet, hopeful beats; intimacy crashes against fear and longing. Those very contradictions are what make the music so transcendent. The album’s title alludes to a color and frequency of light that’s been said to have particular spiritual and healing properties. Bell, a student of Reiki energy healing, says one of his meditations involved “calling on the violet flame of Saint Germain, who’s supposedly, in your imagination, on the top of the mountain. There’s that thing of meeting your former self: leaving your baggage behind, and going up and stepping into the flame and having everything transmut-

ed and clean and starting from scratch. So that’s what it’s about. I don’t know whether I’ve achieved that in reality, but it’s a process. It’s evolution.” As a band, Erasure itself seems to be on a long path of evolution and growth. Their previous album, last year’s Christmas record Snow Globe, marked the first project they worked on together after Bell’s partner of 25 years died, and, unsurprisingly, evoked a darker emotional landscape. Many of the songs they chose to record then acknowledged the loneliness and sadness of the holiday season for so many people — and also called upon the ancient roots of the winter holiday, capturing the feeling of an ancient world engulfed in darkness, waiting for the rebirth of the sun. “Definitely with Snow Globe… I really felt like I was transported back to being a

t’s almost thirty years now that Andy Bell and Vince Clarke have been making hit pop songs as Erasure — and after all that time, Bell finally thinks he’s starting to get his musical partner. “I think I understand more and more now what he’s about,” the English singer tells Atlantic City Weekly. “He’s had ten more years [in the music business] than I have. He won’t read interviews. He won’t see himself on the TV. He hates being in videos. He even hates being on photos. I used to think this was a kind of vanity, but as I go on, you just realize you have to become kind of egoless in some ways — and I think for Vince that’s actually part of it. He doesn’t want to be plastered all over everywhere. I think being a lead singer [I’m] more ego-driven, but Vince is my mentor really — and I think he always will be. I’m glad he’s there. I think I might have made a few more mistakes if he wasn’t.” American audiences know Erasure, who’ll play the Borgata (and DJ at an afterparty) Friday, as the brightly buoyant synthpop duo behind such top-40 hits as “Chains of Love” and “A Little Respect.” But as Bell and Clarke have refined the core of their unique sound over the decades, it’s become clearer and clearer that the heart of it has less to do with synthesizers and falsetto, and more to do with the pure quality of their songwriting — the intersection of compelling melodies and lyrical authenticity. That’s evident on Erasure’s new album, The Violet Flame. Their sixteenth studio album, just released this week, it’s an evocative pop-disco-trance meditation on the sacred nature of life, love, longing and vulnerability. Like a musical mandala, the album’s 10 tracks meander from thumping tribal beats to haunting flute lines to bouncy dance tunes. The songs spiral around one another playfully: The electric dance rhythms of “Dead of Night” evoke a yearning that’s echoed in the bittersweet disco beats of “Paradise,” while the eternal nature of love is celebrated first in Bell’s sultry ballad “Be the One,” then

teenage boy and singing in the cathedral at school,” Bell muses. “I love that feeling of when you’re in the church: the smells, the peace, and when you’re singing it is almost as if the sky is open, and you’re communing with everything that’s going on.” Yet Bell and Clarke’s work has never lost its signature joy — or its momentum. Having just completed a one-man show called Torsten The Bareback Saint at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, Bell returned to the United States to launch Erasure’s 27-city North American tour, which began on Sept. 12 in Miami and will head to Europe on Nov. 8, concluding with two shows at the end of the year at New York’s Terminal 5. “The main thing for me on this [album] was embracing discipline rather than fighting it,” Bell says. “Since in school, I was not the most studious pupil, I always thought that part of rock & roll was being a rebel — being able to wake up late and all that stuff. Now I’m thinking much more I want to embrace responsibility and embrace discipline. I think that’s a good thing.” Bell uses Reiki techniques, he says, in preparing to go on tour. “You can rehearse just as much in your mind as you can singing aloud,” he says. “You can always wish things for the future. You can impose things onto the future... You’re wishing that the audience has a great time, and there’s some kind of spiritual connection going on during the show, and I think that really works.” In concert, Erasure fans find that connection in the overlap between Clarke’s electronic rhythms and the intimacy of Bell’s voice, which together leave the crowd transformed from many into one — not unlike the communion that came from singing in the cathedral in Bell’s youth. “I feel like when you’re a singer, you always have to have a certain amount of pathos in your singing,” he says, “and so there’s always some kind of unrequited yearning that I think is never, ever going to get filled up. Which doesn’t mean that you’re an eternal pessimist, but it’s almost like when you’re singing, you’re holding out your hands like a cup. It is like praying… As you’re singing, you’re just pouring out your emotion and just hoping that somewhere, in some place, your voice might be heard in the ethos, and then hopefully your cup will get replenished.” n

I love ‘em all! If I had to pick a personal favorite I guess I would have to say Texas. Not that I have anything against the other regions, ‘cause I enjoy them all at Fat Jacks, but the flavors of Texas, the cuts of beef that Texas is known for and the style of Texas cooking is second to none in my opinion.

18 hours over smoldering hickory wood. And what can I say about ribs other than wow! When ribs are done right, they should not fall off the bone. There should be a little tug to the meat. Whatever the meat, I want to taste the meat, the smoke, the seasoning and the sauce.

We understand you have a new Main Line restaurant in Malvern, Pa., scheduled to open soon. How is that going? Malvern should be open the second week in October. We will also be opening Morrisville, Oxford and in Philly (all Pa.) probably around December, and Hamilton (N.J.) in early 2015 — with more to come. n

at Golden Nugget on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4-5. From noon to 6pm both days, over 100 teams from across America will convene outside of Golden Nugget’s Lot A to grill and smoke their tastiest meats, some of which will be available to sample. Their dishes will compete for each certified master judge’s vote to earn the title of Grand Champion. That winner will take home a top prize of $3,500 and the title of New Jersey State Champion, plus an opportunity to represent the Garden State at the Jack Daniel’s World Championship in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Those placing second through fifth overall will receive cash prizes ranging from $400 to $1,500. Separate categories for chicken, ribs, brisket, and pork will be paid out in cash prizes ranging from $50 to $700, making this competition the largest cash purse BBQ contest on the East Coast. In addition to the competition, Glenn Gross, a top pitmaster on Destination America network’s series BBQ Pitmasters, will be on site showing off his exceptional skills. Gross, founder of Fat Jack’s BBQ, has won over 200 awards and Grand Championships for his mouthwatering ‘cue, and will be demonstrating how to create the best competition ribs, chicken and brisket while providing samples of his famed meats. Live entertainment will be provided by John McNutt Band all weekend. On Sunday, the Michael Allman Band (fronted by the son of Gregg Allman) will feature sets of the Allman Brothers Band. bles the original YA dystopian novel from 1954, Lord of the Flies. Thomas is impatient with learning about the protocols of this society, since the rules are more about keeping them in the safety of the Glade and not about them facing the dangers in the Maze to facilitate an escape. As he stirs the pot with his impatience, he becomes an enemy of Gally (Will Poulter), the brutish bully who enjoys his position in the current chain of command and isn’t keen on Thomas’ fresh ideas. Directed by Wes Ball (Beginners) with a screenplay by Noah Oppenheim and Grant Pierce Myers, the film is a solid B-movie version of the big YA franchises, less pretentious and glossy. The way that Thomas changes the focus of the group and shows his courage and determination is beautifully conveyed by the talented O’Brien, with nice support

from Poulter, and Thomas’ more friendly Gladers who drink his Kool-aid — Ki Hong Lee as Minho, Ami Ameen as Alby, Blake Cooper as young Chuck and Kaya Scodelario as Teresa, the token female who shows up. One suspects these fresh new faces have begun their journey to impending stardom in part because, like the other YA adaptations, the ending of the film is also an introduction to the next chapter. And since the box-office results after opening week look promising for a film that didn’t cost nearly as much as The Hunger Games, the second film, Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, is set for release in September 2015. n

he steady stream of movies based on popular YA (young adult) novels has a new candidate for continued cinematic success in The Maze Runner, based on the book by James Dashner. While the Hunger Games franchise need not worry about competition and Divergent is still the secondplace finisher in the YA movie sweepstakes, The Maze Runner has confidently taken third place on merit and avoided the lack-of-audience-interest pothole that took down other YA series hopefuls like The Mortal Instruments, Ender’s Game and — still in theaters — The Giver. The Maze Runner, like those others, is also set against a dystopian landscape where young people must survive in a hostile environment. The idea that the adults have screwed up the world and the young people must provide hope with rebellion is obviously an attractive theme. (Fans of the book, you can skip the next two paragraphs as I describe the plot for those like myself who have not read it.) We are introduced to the film’s protagonist— played by Dylan O’Brien of Teen Wolf fame — as he awakes in an elevator that’s hurling him upward at great speed. Dazed and confused, he has no memory, not even his name, but when the ride stops, he looks up at a ring of young men who pull him out and introduce him to his new home, the Glade. It takes a few hours, but he finally remembers that his name is Thomas. The Glade faces an enormous structure, the Maze, that opens every morning and closes every evening. Within the Maze are monsters called Grievers that appear to be a mashup of the jumbo spider from Harry Potter’s adventures and the nasty skitter critters from TV’s Fallen Skies. Also within the Maze is an escape route, and that is what soon obsesses Thomas, the new boy in this young male society that resem-
