ometimes music catches you off guard. When I was 14, Billy Joel released his strugglingfishermen ballad “The Downeaster Alexa.” I was drawn to it right away: the larger-than-life soundscape of crashing waves, the mythic rendering of the doomed way of life. I dug it. I listened to it I don’t know how many times during the high school years. But back then, if you were a kid who loved music, you were trying to keep track of all your songs across dozens and dozens of cassette tapes -- and then you found yourself rebuilding your entire musical life from scratch on CD. Which is to say: After leaving my parents’ home, “The Downeaster Alexa” was a song I somehow never thought to re-collect. And since it was only a minor VH1 hit at best, it never presented itself to me again, either. Last week, with the ocean on mind, I began musing upon all the melancholically beautiful songs I love about bodies of water: Warren Zevon’s “Mutineer,” Dar Williams’s “Let’s Go Fishing in the Morning,” Grey DeLisle’s “Katy Allen.” At which point I remembered “The Downeaster Alexa” — and, it being 2014, naturally, immediately downloaded it, hit play and began singing along, the words bubbling right up from the long-buried memory register where they’d lain dormant for twenty years or more.
Worl Famou
Ninety seconds later, I was weeping. Not getting a little misty-eyed — weeping, tears pouring down my face as I tried to choke through the verses with a suddenly heaving chest and uncooperative throat. I was not expecting that. At all. It is a song of loss. Not complete loss, but worse: implacable loss that has begun to devastate you and you know perfectly well isn’t finished yet. I used to love this song, but I hadn’t really lived long enough to understand it yet. Now I have. My friend, the author Eugie Foster, died this week after battling cancer for the past year. She was 42. She leaves behind countless loved ones and an amazing — but far, far too short — collection of brilliant books and stories. She’s not the first friend I’ve lost too young to that horrible scourge. I pray that she will be the last. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here in South Jersey, there are three big benefit events coming right up: the Susan G. Komen Fondation’s Race for the Cure on Oct. 5 and Golf for the Cure on Oct. 13, and the Tropicana’s Little Pink Dress Party on Oct. 4. Pick one. Go to it. n more info: komencsnj.org / tropicana.net

Foreign Legion MOST GU ITARISTS NEVER PL AY IN A LEGENDARY RO CK BAND — BUT TOM GIMBEL’S BEEN IN T WO
M
ost musicians who were members of one of the best-selling, longest-running bands in the history of rock ‘n’ roll probably wouldn’t have taken the phone call. But Tom Gimbel was all ears in 1995 when Mick Jones and Lou Gramm asked him to leave Aerosmith to join Foreigner. As a touring member of Aerosmith, Gimbel’s duties were mostly limited to playing saxophone and some backing vocals. But Gimbel really wanted to play guitar, one of the many instruments he mastered while attending Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. “[Aerosmith] already had two amazing guitar players up there, Brad Whitford and Joe Perry,” Gimbel explains. “When I got called by Foreigner, I was really happy because guitar is really one of my favorite instruments, the one I really want to play, especially in a rock band. So when they said they wanted me on guitar and sax and singing, I said ‘Okay, you’ve got
me.’ I’ve just been ecstatic ever since.” There was one other element that made Gimbel’s decision to leave Aerosmith an easy one: Foreigner’s body of work. The band, which was formed in 1976, has generated an amazing catalogue of hits — 14 Top 20 singles, including four that reached No. 1. “People come to our show and hear the songs and go, ‘I know that song, but I didn’t know it was Foreigner.’” Gimbel blames a lot of that on the changes in both terrestrial and satellite radio. “In the old days, they had radio stations, and [DJs] would say what music they’re playing,” he says. “But now, without someone to tell them, [listeners] have no idea what band that was. So the good news is they liked it. They just didn’t realize it was us.” Foreigner is headed to Borgata’s Music Box this weekend (theborgata.com/shows) with a show that was over 30 years in the making. On Friday and Saturday, they’ll feature many
songs from their 1981 seven-time platinum album Foreigner 4 — including numbers like “Juke Box Hero,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You” and “Urgent” — and more, including hits like “Double Vision,” “Cold As Ice” and “Feels Like the First Time.” “Urgent” is Gimbel’s favorite Foreigner song because the sax solo gives him the opportunity to “go wild,” he says. “That is so much fun to just wail on that solo and take it the way Junior Walker did it (in 1981) and then go into different key and give it my own improvisation. It’s the thrill of a lifetime. If you’re playing sax, it’s about as good as it can possibly be. I just think as a human being it’s about as much fun as you can have on this earth — aside from other categories.” Although Foreigner and Aerosmith are cut from different ends of the same musical cloth, Gimbel says there are probably more similarities between the bands than differences. Each, for instance, encouraged him to stretch out as much as possible. “Heavy guitar-based riffs, that’s Foreigner’s calling card, and it was also Aerosmith’s strong suit,” he says. “So we’re kind of on the same page. You would think that someone at that level would have a high degree of detail, like Steven Tyler looking over my shoulder to make sure I
GOLDEN NUGGET ATLANTIC CITY PRESENTS
played every note right. But it wasn’t really like that. They encouraged you to branch out and go crazy. It was wonderful.” He found the same freedom when he joined Foreigner full-time nearly 20 years ago. “Mick Jones and Lou Gramm were saying, ‘Take the sax solo on ‘Urgent’ and then go nuts and do your own solo… and tear the roof off the house.’ They told me to bring the place down, just go insane on the saxophone.” Gimbel credits his formal training at one of the world’s top music schools with setting him on the right path to succeed in a very competitive business. And they did it in a most unusual way, but one that — in retrospect — probably helped him achieve his level of success. “I love the Berklee College of Music, and one of the things I love most about it is that I was there for four years and learned everything I could,” he says. “Then at the very end, they said forget all of that, file it away in your subconscious and… just try to play with as much emotion and feeling as you can.” n

he John R. Elliott HERO Walk will return to the Ocean City boardwalk Sunday, Oct. 5. The fourth annual walk has a target goal of $200,000 this year and, as always, promotes sober designated drivers to prevent drunken-driving tragedies. The event was named in honor of U.S. navy Ensign John R. Elliott, who was killed by a drunk driver in July 2000. His parents, Bill and Muriel Elliott, started the Ensign John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers shortly thereafter. While alive, Ensign Elliott was selected by his navy peers to be a HERO (human education resource officer), so the event carries that acronym as part of its title. The 5K walk goes from 6th to 20th streets and back. Registration is at 9am and the walk starts 11am. Pre-registration is $20 for adults and $10 for students. Race-day registration is $25 for adults and $15 for students. Visit herocampaign.org for more — M.M.

vent producer Tony Mart Presents is teaming with Circle Liquor Store in Somers Point for the inaugural Rocktoberfest — a craft beer and wine festival scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4, from 5-11pm at Egg Harbor Township Elks Lodge #2563 (1815 Mays Landing-Somers Point Rd. in EHT). Admission and parking are free. Local guitar virtuoso Billy Walton (pictured right, photo: John Loreaux) and his horn-driven rhythm section will be performing three full sets throughout the evening. There will be dozens of fine beers and wines to sample, along with a full bar. Craft-beer tasting flights of three for $6 will be available, as will full beer and wine servings for $5. Delectables will include smoked chicken-and-pork BBQ, gumbo, smoked sauerbraten, soft pretzels, and event producer Carmen Marotta’s famed sweet-and-savory winekraut. Oktoberfest music will garnish lots of authentic German fare. The event, co-sponsored by Atlantic City Weekly, benefits The Arc of Atlantic County and AMVETS, a veterans support group. Visit tonymart.com. A longstanding tradition, Oktoberfest at Historic Smithville has become synonymous with great food and family fun Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4-5, from 10am-5pm each day. Included will be over 100 juried crafters featuring handmade clothing and jewelry, an international food court, a live German oompah band, and tons of kids activities including a carousel, train rides and paddleboats. The entire historic town is to be converted into a giant celebration of authentic autumnal food, beer and music with a harvest-style décor as a backdrop. A free shuttle runs to and from the Smithville Shopping Center from 9:30am-5:30pm each day. Go to historicsmithvillenj.com and click “events” for more. — MORGAN MULLOY & RAY SCHWEIBERT

hen Cuba Libre opted a few years back to focus on expanding its brand- name properties and divest itself of its 32 Degrees Luxe Lounge nightclubs in both Atlantic City and Philly, two young entrepreneurs took over what had been the 32 Degrees in The Quarter at Tropicana and turned it into Anthem Lounge. Longtime co-workers and lifelong area residents Lambros Tsikouras and Carrie Kauffman kept in place the European-style bottle service that 32 Degrees helped pioneer here in the Delaware Valley, and added what they dubbed a “hybrid Las Vegas-style rock club and Miami-style dance club” vibe. Before long, the compact but well-configured Anthem had become a favorite among other young and upwardly mobile sorts. On Thursday, Oct. 9, SoPro Atlantic City — a young professionals networking organization that meets several times a year for social occasions — will host a mixer at Anthem from 6-8pm. Guests can enjoy half-priced drinks and door prizes while mingling socially and professionally. Special $59 Tropicana room rates are available too. Those interested can call 609.343.6930 and mention the SoPro AC event, or guests can register at facebook.com/SoProAC. SoPro Atlantic City was co-founded by attorneys Michael Gibson, Sheila Hughes and Michael Salad of the Cooper Levenson law firm. All were also past recipients of the annual Atlantic City Weekly/Greater Atlantic City Jaycees Top 40 Under 40 awards honoring young people making a difference in South Jersey. Any Thursday night is typically prime time to visit Anthem, as drink specials include $4 domestic beers, $5 cocktails, bottle service specials and free admission. There are also killer drink and bottle-service specials there every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. n More info: 609.576.5206. anthemlounge.com

ITALIAN FEST EXCITEMENT IN A .C . AND PHILLY
O
nce again, greetings and salutations. And even though we closed Memories for the season, we’re still at your beck and call at the shore. As you know, Thursdays we’re at the Golden Nugget in the Live Bar with our “Live at 5” show, which you can hear on WTKU Kool 98.3. Plus on Kool we’re with you every weeknight from 7-9pm, and on its sister station, WOND 1400 AM, you don’t want to miss our Sunday show, The Geator, Frank and Friends, from noon-2pm. And for the fall, check my calendar at Geator.net for some personal appearances not too far away from you guys. By the way, this Sunday is Philly’s big annual St. Nicholas of Tolentine Italian Festival. As usual, I’ll be doing it, and this year I’ll introduce my old friend, Bobby Rydell. The festival begins at noon and lasts all day. And on Sunday, Oct. 12, we’ll be riding in the Geatormobile with our pal Chazz Palminteri, Grand Marshal of this
year’s Columbus Day Parade in Philadelphia. Back at the shore, lots of things are happening for Columbus Day weekend. My pal Frankie Valli is at the Borgata, and over at the Golden Nugget they’re having their own Italian Fest Oct. 11-12. There’ll be live entertainment, great Italian food and wine, and lots more, so don’t miss it. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. But now, it’s time to ask the Geator. Do you remember Tim Considine from Spin and Marty and some of the other series on the Mickey Mouse Club? I wonder whatever happened to him and whether he is still alive. (Sue H., Margate) — Tim, who was well known for Spin and Marty, The Hardy Boys, and My Three Sons and also appeared in The Longest Day, basically retired from show business in 1973 to become a sports photographer and race car hobbyist. Interestingly, his co-star in
Spin and Marty, David Stollery, also quit acting early on for a successful career designing cars, including the 1978 Toyota Celica A40. I need an answer to a question about a record done I believe in the ‘60s. The title was “Be My Girl.” The group sounded very similar to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Would you happen to know the group’s name and the label their record was on? Thank you (Rick Hershey, via Facebook) — One of the great songs that radio unfortunately has forgotten. The group was the Four-Evers out of Brooklyn, and it was Four Seasons producer Bob Crewe who signed them to the Smash label, which put out the record in 1964. It was produced by Charlie Calello, who arranged so many of the Four Seasons songs. I heard a song with a fast beat on one of
your live broadcasts that talked about coyotes coming to a dance to find Amazons. Is this where you got the idea to call the kids Amazons and coyotes? (Paula, Ocean City) — Actually, it was the other way around. At my dances I would create different names for the kids according to the styles, the look and the dress they had. If a guy was always dancing with all the girls, I called him a coyote — he was on the hunt. The girls, if they were small, were Geatorettes; if they were tall, they were Amazons. From that I came up with the idea for a song, a stomp called “Amazons and Coyotes,” which I gave to Jerry Ross, who produced it using the Dream Lovers. n

YOU CAN COUNT ON THE L AUGHS FORTUNATELY FOR THE WORLD, BRIAN REGAN BECAME A COMIC , NOT A CPA
B
rian Regan can’t believe how much the landscape of Atlantic City has changed since he was there a year ago. “It’s weird picking up the paper and seeing that another casino has closed in Atlantic City,” the comedian says. “I find that really disconcerting. I hope the Borgata is still open when I get there. It’s just so different than what I’m used to in Las Vegas. The only time a casino closes is when it’s about to get torn down and a new, bigger, better casino opens.” Humor: Sometimes it hurts. “But seriously,” Regan says, “I love performing in Atlantic City. I’m glad this is what I do. I come to town and do stand-up. Nothing is better than that, at least for me.” For many stand-up comics, comedy was not their first career option. Jeff Foxworthy once toiled at IBM, working on mainframes. Paul Mecurio made a very nice living as an attorney. Brian Regan? He was on the way to becoming an accountant. But a funny thing happened to Regan on the way to following in his father’s footsteps. “I discovered that I didn’t have the aptitude to be an accountant,” he tells Atlantic City Weekly, calling from his Vegas home. “My dad was a natural accountant, but I fell behind quickly in college. Once you fall behind when you’re studying accounting in college, you’re in trouble. I figured out that I was no good at accounting — but I had no idea what else I would do.” Fortunately, his college football coach knew what Regan was meant to do for a living. “He said, ‘You’re a funny guy, did you ever consider theater?’” Regan became a theater major, which led to stand-up — and he never looked back. But the comedian, who’ll perform Saturday at the Borgata Event Center, doesn’t just crack wise effectively. Unlike many of his
BY ED CO N D R A N
peers, Regan, 57, who’s been a stand-up for 34 years now, doesn’t use obscenities as a crutch. “I like being a clean comedian,” he says. “You don’t have to ever change your material for an audience. For instance, when you perform on network television, there are certain standards you have to adhere to. If you’re clean, you don’t even have to think about that. I knew this comic who got the call to be on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson back in the day. He had to change language to do the jokes clean on Carson. I remember during the taping, he was thrown since he didn’t get the big laugh that he was used to getting because of the change in language. I never wanted that to happen to me. When I did The Tonight Show with Carson, I was fine. I travelled a different route than the comedian who had the trouble on the show. But I’m not going to get up on a high horse about what I do. There are comics that are dirty that I find hilarious. What I do isn’t loftier than what they do. It’s about getting laughs.” Regan’s off-the-wall observations, which often hark back to childhood, get plenty of laughs. But the divorced father of two children says he doesn’t particularly pine for film or television success. “Sure, it would be nice to have a sitcom,” he says. “But it’s something that would have to be on my terms. It’s not something I was ever fixated on. Some comedians use standup as a springboard to a sitcom or a career in film. I would rather do stand-up than a show — especially if I didn’t have creative control. I don’t have those kind of dreams. I’m happy doing what I do. I’m content with what I’ve achieved. If another opportunity arrives that I’d like to pursue, sure, I would see if it would work. But if nothing ever comes down the pike and all I have is stand-up, I’m
talk about when I come to town.” Every year Regan turns his stand-up material over. “I think it’s a good thing to do that,” he says. “It’s a challenge. Sometimes I go through periods and wonder if I just lost it, because no new material is coming, but it always comes back, and I go through a spurt. I still got it. At least, I think I still have it. I’ll let you be the judge of that.” He’ll throw a few curveballs at the audience this season, he says: “I have an Israeli-Palestine joke, which is so different for me. I have some material about the Pope. Fans are going to be taken aback a bit. I’m evolving at this point, which I think is a really good thing. You don’t want to be the same comic every time you go back to a city. Evolution is important.” n

a happy man. It’s been a great run for me, and I still have a lot of comedy that’s going to come out of me.” Interesting trivia: The young Regan thought at one point he might go into professional football. “I got cut from a semipro team in Orlando and that was the end of my football career,” he says. “I’m fine with that. I loved playing football — but the last thing I need is anything else to happen to my head.” He doesn’t mind not having graduated college, either: “My alma mater [Heidelberg College, in Ohio] gave me an honorary doctorate. I’m a doctor of humane letters, whatever that means. It all worked out for me.” Regan was off for much of the summer and says he’s anxious to perform. “It’s weird,” he says. “I was told this summer that there wasn’t a lot of room for comedy, which I find strange, but if I’m busy for three seasons, that’s not a bad thing. That left more time for my children. I went scuba diving with them in Florida, and I had some time to relax and write, which is a good thing. I’ll have plenty to

t’s not easy to be the Last Comic Standing — or even to make the crop of finalists who get to go on the road together. The NBC reality show’s latest funny bunch — Rocky LaPorte, Lachlan Patterson, Nicki Carr, Joe Machi and Rod Man — will stop Saturday at the Golden Nugget. What should we expect? LaPorte is a veteran humorist; you may recognize his strong Brooklyn accent from his Comedy Central Presents special or his appearance on The Tonight Show. A regular on the New York club circuit, he’s opened shows for Louis Anderson and Drew Carey. Most comics have worked regular jobs before becoming stand-up comics. Penn State alum Machi was once a supermarket customer service manager, before deciding to pursue comedy full-time eight years ago. Machi, who has appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, has great delivery and is constantly surprising on stage. Carr, too, is a late bloomer in the stand-up game; the boisterous Bronx native first tried her luck as a comedian at 34 and hasn’t thought about another gig since. Patterson has tried a number of times to become the Last Comic Standing. In prior years, he was slammed for not being original enough — but he worked it until he figured it out, and now he has a solid career. And Man is a veteran humorist out of Atlanta who’s performed on “The Bad Boys of Comedy” tour and on Martin Lawrence’s “First Amendment” jaunt, won season eight of Last Comic Standing, and has huge potential. Each are solid stand-ups — but Laporte, a 55-year-old former truck driver and dock worker and a grandfather of 10, has the best story. A store manager on a delivery route suggested he try comedy; that’s long enough ago that he once appeared on NBC’s Cheers. Laporte is a master at delivering self deprecating, blue-collar comedy everyone can relate to. The good news for him is that a stand-up can hit it big at mid-life; that was the story, after all, for such comic icons as Rodney Dangerfield and Redd Foxx. Will Laporte follow in their footsteps? Will Carr, Machi, Patterson or Man break? There’s only one way to find out. —E.C.

t all starts as an unassuming autumn hayride at the New Jersey Motorsports Park. But the placid evening quickly devolves into horror and madness as zombies attack! Normally, you’d be prey to these undead cannibals, devoured like so many extras in a Romero film. But this time it’s, different. This time, you came prepared. This time, you have paintballs. The Motorsports Park is putting a new twist on the “haunted hayride” concept with their Zombie Paintball Hayride. Visitors will encounter zombies as they are taken through the park’s open fields and wooded areas. But rather than leave people cringing in terror, the Park is encouraging you to take the offensive: Paintball guns are mounted to the hayride, and you must fire them at the zombies in order to stop them from claiming your brains as dinner. “When we opened our Battlegrounds Paintball facility earlier this year, we knew right away that there had to be a Halloween event of some kind,” says Chris Banker, one of the New Jersey Motorsports Park’s managers. “It took a bit to develop the idea, and our staff is putting in a lot of work to get it off the ground.” The Battlegrounds Paintball area consists of 10 acres of outdoor fields. The facility has been very popular with groups, from bachelor parties to team-building outings. It’s easy to see how this portion of the park, with its obstacles and wooded areas, lends itself to a haunted event. For an attraction with this much simulated violence, safety is a priority. The paintball guns cannot be removed from the hayride, which participants cannot leave during the duration of the ride. Special care will also be taken to make sure that the actors playing zombies are adequately trained for the event and protected from possible injury. “I’m a huge fan of The Walking Dead on AMC,” Banker says. While he says there’s no explicit Walking Dead references in the ride, his love of the show has made him very excited for this event. If you’ve always wanted to take aim at the ghoulish shamblers who haunt your nightmares, this is your big chance. — JARED AXELROD

tlantic City may have taken some lumps within the past few months, but the town’s boxing scene has been sticking, moving and rolling with the punches. On Saturday, Oct. 4, Bally’s Events Center keeps the pugilistic momentum going with another exciting evening at the fights. Crowd-pleasing Passaic native Glen “Jersey Boy” Tapia, 21-1 (13 KOs), headlines, taking on Lithuanian-born Donatas Bondorovas, 18-5-1 (6 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round junior middleweight contest. This will mark Tapia’s second outing since his lone loss to the tough James Kirkland at Boardwalk Hall last December in what was viewed by many as the show stealer that night and a definite fight of the year candidate. The fighter spoke with Atlantic City Weekly about why his loss was a blessing; how he is a better fighter now; and what to expect every time you come to see him fight.
Your A.C. fight with James Kirkland stole the show that night; even in defeat, and maybe even because of it, you gained many new fans. Tell us more about who Glen “Jersey Boy” Tapia is. First off, when I fight, people can see my heart and that I put it all out there on the line. I really fight for the fans... I hate boring fights. I started out young... I have been fighting since I was about six. I remember I got punched in the face at about six or seven years old, and I went to my mother. She gave me a whipping and sent me back downstairs to fight the kid in front of all of his friends. It was so funny, like in a movie, where all the kids were in back of him and in back of me, was my mom. I end up fighting this kid and realized that fighting was so easy. I know it seemed kind of strict, and it may look bad to some, but she told me to never back down from anyone. I started boxing when I was eight, when I walked into the gym because my brother and all the kids in the neighborhood started boxing. It turns out that I was the one that stuck with it. I was No. 1 a lot of times in the amateurs
ticketmaster.com
in New Jersey and also No. 1 in the world. At 16, I was No. 3 and traveled to Turkey, and after being there and going other places around the world, I got to see that the world is bigger than just where I’m from.
People can fold after a loss or use it as a learning experience. What did your new trainer, the great Freddie Roach of Wild Card Boxing Club, say you did wrong? What’s it like to work with him? He always tells me, “Stop fighting with your heart and use your brain.” He tells me it all the time, so much that it gets annoying, but I definitely understand what he is saying: I can still go out there and be smart and entertain. I have one of the very best trainers in the world. I met Freddie when I went out to the Philippines to spar with Pacquiao. He watched me spar for about a week; after that, he said I was good. He said his door was always open — but I initially didn’t take him up on it. I didn’t because I was loyal to my coach at the time. But my trainer was one who told me to take that opportunity. He said, “You’re not leaving me for a bum. You’re leaving for a Hall of Famer.” Training in Wild Card, you meet and train
with some elite fighters. In most gyms, you have a good fighter here and there, but in the Wild Card, you have a lot of competition all around. It’s the environment where everybody wants to be the best, and competitiveness is high. When I’m in the gym, I’m always laughing, but I’m always working. I’ll be next to [Miguel] Cotto, and he’s giving me some tips; then I’m getting some tips from Ruslan [Provodnikov]. It’s these tips that help make me a better fighter. I’m getting tips from the best. Freddy came up and said to me, “You know what Cotto said? He said you can be a champion.” Coming from Cotto, that is inspiring.
What can your opponent, Donatas Bondorovas, and the fans expect here on Oct. 4? They can expect an exciting fight. I hear that he can take punches and he can go rounds. I want that, and I want to go those rounds, but the trainers know how I do. I want to put on a show. If he get stopped in the first, then he will get stopped in the first. I am not looking for that, because I want to fight smarter — but if it comes, it comes. You will definitely see me have fun and put on a show. n

gracefully with those late-season fruits. I opted for Phillips’ signature entrée, the premium broiled seafood platter. Consisting of a lobster tail served atop a generous portion of crab imperial, a skewer of two each grilled shrimp and scallops and an oversized piece of salmon, plus a sizeable scoop of creamy mashed potatoes and a half-dozen spears of asparagus, its heft alone was imposing. The seafood had all been handled with a craftsman’s precision, most of it cooked just to the left of medium, exactly as all fine aquatic products should be served. My dining partner’s selection was the nightly fish addition, a nice rectangle of meaty sword steak. From an array of cooking styles and saucing, she chose to have it blackened and finished with lemon/chive butter. (Other potential accoutrements include a pineapple/mango salsa, chipotle and cilantro lime butter or a red wine and toasted pecan butter.) The swordfish flesh was pristine, surgically cleaned of any residual bloodlines, remarkably fresh and tasty. If there is anything in the culinary realm more virtuous than a simple, well-cooked piece of fish like this, we have yet to discover it. We opted for a pair of sides: crab mac-and-cheese — one of the best versions of this new classic available locally

— and asparagus spears gently bathed in lemony butter sauce. Desserts, though, were the evening’s biggest surprise, beginning with warm cinnamon bread pudding, glamorized by white chocolate glaze and streams of sweet, sticky caramel. Supple and yielding, the sweet bread alone would have made for a fine treat. Combined with other elements — especially cinnamon chips found within its deep layers — this becomes a finale worthy of the vaunted Phillips brand. My choice, called “Devil Made Me Do It,” was a sundae-style creation; a warm rocky road brownie beneath vanilla ice cream, white chocolate and chocolate syrup, topped with whipped cream. After a full century in business, Phillips Seafood remains an authentic, radiant, seashore gem. n

hillips Seafood, founded at Hooper’s Island on Maryland’s eastern shore and currently celebrating its 100th anniversary, remains one of Atlantic City’s grandest restaurant attractions. Strategically positioned at the summit of the third floor on The Pier Shops at Caesars, Phillips’s iconic gothic-scripted insignia has become synonymous with superb regional oceanic specialties. A recent weekend visit began with a hot oyster sampler delivering four Long Island blue points, all dolled up for a night on the town. The quartet — a spicy stuffed crab, barbecue, scampi and casino preparations — were each cleanly shucked and easily removed from their wide, deep cups. We were particularly taken by the elegance and symmetry of this presentation — an artsy study of pretty colors, sizes and shapes in food form. Though we enjoyed all four varieties of åbivalves, the spicy stuffed crab proved a real standout. Our second starter, portabella and filet mignon spring rolls, were a pair of golden, cigar-shaped pastry tubes. Nicely crisped, this recent menu addition’s interiors exploded with a chopped blend of tender, succulent beef and earthy ’shroom. Wide stripes of auburn-hued bourbon barbecue sauce and an assertively seasoned mound of seaweed salad garnish complimented and completed the plating. Another newer menu item, watermelon and crab gazpacho, proved a plucky, truly seasonal concoction. The natural sweetness of that glorious pink melon — so much a part of warm-weather eating here in southern New Jersey — was kindly accessorized by scads of centrally placed pure white crabmeat. Like the spring rolls, this chilled soup blend didn’t lack for spice or heat, though we’d have preferred just a slight reduction in garlic. Either way, served at an ideally cold temp, this modern take on classic gazpacho made for a lovely, palaterecharging middle course. If you’ve got a taste for this summery creation, though, do so quickly; executive chef Paul Drew tells us it will disappear from the bill of fare soon. A salad of poached pear and fig was also visually stunning; eight or so pinkish slices of stone fruit arched about a tall mix of greens, dotted with luscious, chewy bits of fig. The dressing here was ingenious, employing the almost-syrupy poaching liquid to fashion a formula just intricate enough to dance

DENZEL WASHINGTON AND DIRECTOR ANTOINE FUQUA UNITE FOR MORE MAYHEM IN ‘THE EQUALIZER’ BY LORI HOFFMAN

as the eye of the storm that is coming. Even in this bland setting, we understand that there is coiled fury behind the calm gaze of McCall and must patiently wait for the explosion that will remind us that this is after all, an Antoine Fuqua movie. The trigger that launches his true nature is the brutal beating that puts Elena in the hospital. McCall walks into a restaurant controlled by the Russian mob and faces down five killers, checks his watch to decide how long it will take to leave them either dead outright or clinging to life, and proceeds to efficiently carry out his mission. This action leads to the Russians calling in their version of a McCall-like military trained assassin, a troubleshooting psycho with the innocuous name of Teddy (Marton Csokas). Before the conflict is resolved there will be dirty cops exposed (most notably David Harbour as Teddy’s cop liaison) and a string of criminal corpses killed in various creative ways. In particular the signature battle at McCall’s store allows Fuqua to go to town with an imaginative use of hard-

ware store staples as deadly weapons in the talented hands of McCall. The viability of the aging badass as a popular movie icon has been proven by the surprising recent career track of Liam Neeson and in the better moments of the Expendable movies. The Washington-Fuqua contribution is even more potent. Featuring an ending that sets up The Equalizer as a possible film franchise, expect to see more of Denzel Washington giving Neeson serious competition as the movies’ best badass old geezer. n

irector Antoine Fuqua took the noble persona so inherent in the work of Denzel Washington and sent it into hiding, bringing out his dark side as a thoroughly corrupt police detective in 2001’s Training Day. It was a shocking change for Washington, but despite his criminal activities, the character of Alonzo Harris retaining the actor’s signature charm. The performance earned Washington his second Academy Award and his first in a starring role. The role also gave him increased credibility as a man of action both good (Man on Fire) and bad (American Gangster). This brings up to their current collaboration, The Equalizer, based on the popular 1980s TV series about a former British intelligence agent based in New York who looks to help people in trouble. Fuqua and his screenwriter Richard Wend have used the TV series as a starting point, creating a much darker template. The result is a TV adaptation similar in quality to The Fugitive, different from the original in a way that makes it stand alone as a singular experience that just happens to have roots in an old TV show. We meet Robert McCall (Washington) at his job at a Home Depot-like store in Boston. He’s an affable, dependable employee who takes the kidding from his much younger co-workers, and is working with one of them, Ralphie (Johnny Skourtis), to qualify for a job as a security guard at the store. McCall doesn’t have a social life outside his job and his nightly trips to the local diner at 2am because he can’t sleep. There he befriends another regular, a teen hooker, Elena (Chloe Grace Moretz), with dreams of being a singer. Her reality is much bleaker. These scenes of an unremarkable life are strung together
