TALKING WITH TOM JOYNER THE NATIONAL R ADIO HOST MAKES A R ARE STOP IN A .C .
M
orning-drive don Tom Joyner was dubbed “the hardest working man in radio” decades ago, back when he was flying from Dallas to Chicago every weekday, hosting a morning show in one and an afternoon show in the other. The descriptor still fits: Today, the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show is heard by 11 million listeners in over 120 cities nationwide, including Atlantic City. Now Joyner’s taking the show on tour; this Thursday, Oct. 9, he’ll join the 96.1 WTTHFM The Touch family for a special 5-to-7pm happy hour at Kelsey’s (1545 Pacific Ave.). Then Friday, Oct. 10, he’ll broadcast live from WTTH-FM’s studios from 6 to 10am before heading out—with longtime on-air foils Sybil Wilkes and J. Anthony Brown—to serve customers and fans at the Arkansas Avenue McDonald’s (amid the Tanger Outlets) from noon to 1pm. Atlantic City Weekly asked the affable radio vet and activist a few questions ahead of his arrival.
Your Fantastic Voyage ocean cruise brings together amazing entertainers in the service of raising money for scholarships to historically black colleges and universities. Have you been impacted by the slew of copycat cruises that have bubbled up in recent years? I am so proud that the Fantastic Voyage taught cruise liners and exotic islands and airlines the value of African American consumers.
Before our cruise, black people were cruising and flying and vacationing, but the travel industry wasn’t courting them the way they are now. The Fantastic Voyage also gave a whole lot of African Americans experiences they might not ever imagined having. So of course there are copycats... but I promise you, none of them can boast the line-up of the 2015 Fantastic Voyage: R. Kelly, LL Cool J, Earth, Wind & Fire, TLC, War, The Family Stone, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Ruben Studdard, R&B Divas—and we’re not finished yet. We sail April 11-19.
So much of what you do is rooted in advocacy. Why aren’t you content with simply entertaining your audiences? In my hometown of Tuskegee, Alabama, I saw people helping each other on a daily basis—especially my mother. She was a secretary and would dedicate hours to typing and editing term papers for Tuskegee students. She did what she could do to give back, and I think we all have to figure that out for ourselves.
If you could start all over today, what would you do differently? Agree to interview Whitney Houston when her record promoter brought her to the radio station when she was an unknown. Who knew she was going to become the Whitney Houston? — KENYA BEVERLY

Before the walk got underway, all the participants tossed their hats in the air as part of the “Hats off to Heroes” campaign. The event was named in honor of U.S. Navy Ensign John R. Haunted Happenings t’s a given that here in southern New Jersey, we’re gonna go all out at Halloween to throw awesome scares at our adrenaline-loving terror junkies. After all, the nearby Pine Barrens is the home of one of American culture’s favorite spooky legends: the story of Mother Leeds and her thirteenth child, forever after known as the Jersey Devil. This week, we get a jump on the early Halloween fun that’s going on right now—including some nonterrifying happenings for younger kids.

lthough they consistently began knocking homegrown groups out of the Top 10, not every American musical act wanted to take up arms against the British invasion in the early 1960s. Two of the biggest acts from either side of the pond actually had a mutual admiration thing going during the usvs.-them period of modern music. Turns out The Beatles and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons were big fans of one another. Valli said he and Four Seasons bass player and arranger Charlie Calello were vacationing in Rome in 1965 when the Fab Four were performing their only two concerts in the Italian capital. Valli wanted to meet the band that had been dueling with the Four Seasons for the top spots on the pop music charts. Some weeks, the Beatles would be number one; other weeks, it was the Four Seasons. So Valli tracked down where the Beatles were staying, called the hotel and asked for John Lennon’s room. One of the band’s roadies answered the phone and asked who was calling.
Valli identified himself. Next thing he knew, Lennon was on the phone asking if it was really the falsetto-voiced singer from Newark. “I said, ‘Yeah, it’s me, I found out you guys were here and thought I would say hi,’” Valli told Rock Cellar Magazine in its July issue. “[Lennon] said, ‘Well, come on up to my suite.’” Lennon wasn’t alone in his room. All four of the Beatles were there. Valli said he had a great time and spent about 90 minutes talking with the lads from Liverpool, who were in the process of reinventing popular music and the way it was being presented both live and from the studio. “We were talking about their music and our music,” he recalled. “They were telling me how big a fan they were of our music and I was telling them how much we loved their music. It was really terrific.” Valli has tons of stories like that one from the days when the world spun a little bit slower and records spun a little faster. And why shouldn’t he?
rather than follow a consistent musical formula. All these years later, it still seems to be paying off: During a time when 95 percent of Atlantic City’s casino entertainment is limited to one-night stands, Valli is one of the few artists who not only has multi-night gigs — he’s at Borgata’s Music Box Friday through Sunday (866.692.6742; theborgata.com) — but is also contracted for multiple engagements. Valli is one of the rare artists who plays Atlantic City consistently because he’s considered a “casino act” who appeals to gamblers, just like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin did during the early years of the gaming era. Never mind that Valli’s core audience is people in their 60s and 70s. His fans are the most coveted of all casino demographics: People at or past retirement age that may have a little disposable income they’re willing to deposit into slot machines or lay down at the table games. Looking back on his more than six decades as an entertainer, Valli likes to think he’s been a turntable therapist whose music helped people through good times and bad: “I hope I’ve given them some peace of mind from this troubled world.” n

It’s been 52 years since the release of the Four Seasons’ first album on the Vee-Jay label, which spun off two number one singles: “Sherry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” Valli’s entry into the music business predated that by at least a decade, which means Valli has been earning a paycheck as a singer for more than 60 of his 80 years. Perseverance is the one trait that Valli has consistently stuck with and that’s carried him throughout his career, especially during the pre-Four Seasons days when he was fronting vocal groups known as the Variatones or the Four Lovers. After that, it was all a matter of luck, timing and material and being relentless. “To sustain a success you have to keep working at it all of the time,” he said. “You can’t say, ‘Okay I’m successful now, bring me a hit.’ You have to do things for the right reason, too. You have to believe in what you’re doing. We always went in and recorded songs that we loved.” The Four Seasons, he said, were always will- Watch the Emmy-winning Curtain Call with David ing to experiment with something different Spatz, Saturdays at 6pm on WmGm-TV NBC40.

CoUnTRY FaVoRITeS PL aY THe Ta J on SaTURDaY oe Don Rooney almost planned it perfectly. The Rascal Flatts guitarist and his wife hoped to have their third child in what is the band’s “off-season.” Close but no cigar for Rooney, who passed out stogies September 29 in Nashville after his wife Tiffany Fallon had the couple’s third child, a daughter, Devon Olivia. “It’s all good,” Rooney tells Atlantic City Weekly, calling from his Nashville home. “I’m thrilled to have three children. It worked out well enough. We have two more shows and that’s basically it until next year.” Rascal Flatts, which embarks on annual summer tours, like many of its country music peers, has a pair of concerts in New Jersey and then Rooney can focus on his new child like few fathers can. “I’ll have plenty of time with the baby,” he says. “I’ll be fine going away for one weekend. I’m looking forward to playing New Jersey. The crowds are always so great there. It’s a great market for a band like Rascal Flatts. “I have great memories playing Atlantic City with Journey last year. The dates we did with them were awesome. We would take turns headlining and played before a diverse group of fans. I loved it. It was unusual.” The band’s A.C. show Saturday at Trump Taj Mahal, he suggests, may feature some surprises. “It’s the end of the tour and that’s when you have some fun,” the guitarist says. “New Jersey isn’t far from New York, which I love because I’m a Yankees fan.” Rooney was born and raised in Picher, Oklahoma, which is a baseball throw from Spavinaw, Oklahoma, the childhood home of legendary Bronx bomber Mickey Mantle. “If you grew up in that pocket of Oklahoma, odds are that you are a Yankees fan,” Rooney says. “My parents knew the Mantle family. So I’m all about the Yankees. I still can’t believe Derek Jeter’s

final hit at Yankee Stadium. Amazing. You can’t get much bigger than Derek Jeter.” Well, Rascal Flatts is pretty big. The band, which also includes vocalist Gary LeVox and bassist-keyboardist Jay DeMarcus, have 26 Top 20 hits that landed on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. A dozen of those, such as ‘What Hurts The Most’ and ‘Bless the Broken Road,’ went number one. “We’ve been incredibly fortunate,” Rooney says. “It’s not an easy business to succeed in but we’ve worked so hard and we’re still at it.” The country crossover act with its pleasant harmonies stepped out of the box with its latest album, Rewind. It’s a heavier collection of tracks, thanks to producer Howard Benson (Saliva, 3 Doors Down and Daughtry). Rascal Flatts’ softer side is seldom heard during Rewind; the band’s ninth studio album is its most visceral to date. “Howard has worked with some intense musicians,” Rooney says. “He’s worked with Hoobastank and some other bands that have such a great sound. We don’t want to make the same album over and over again. I think we took a chance this time.” Rooney thinks the band will likely take what it learned from Benson and selfproduce their next album. “We’re probably going to do that,” he says. “We have some ideas for the next album. We’ll see where we go with that. Hopefully we’ll have something out to tour behind for next summer.” In the meantime, Rooney will focus on his Jersey shows and his family. “It’s amazing,” he says. “I’m the luckiest guy in the world. I get to be in this great, incredibly successful band and I have this wonderful wife and great kids. We’re just moving into this new house that I’m calling you from. I’m just trying to get it together here with my family and I’m slipping some music in. Life couldn’t be better.” n

an a rape joke be funny? The great George Carlin thought so, setting up one of his famous bits as a rant against censorship and against people who argue that terrible things shouldn’t be joked about. “I can prove to you that rape is funny,” Carlin’s joke went. “Picture Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd.” At that point, though, the comedian took a left turn, veering from the painful absurdity of pigon-cartoon-hunter assault to an admonishment against victim-blaming: “They like to blame the rape on the woman,” Carlin said. “Say, ‘She had it coming, she was wearing a short skirt.’ These guys think women ought to go to prison for being cock-teasers. Don’t seem fair to me. Don’t seem right. But you can joke about it.” It takes a lot for a comedian to be comparable to Carlin, one of the sharpest wits of the 20th century. Here’s the truth: Amy Schumer — who’s appearing at the Borgata this Saturday, Oct. 11 — has indeed earned that comparison. Both blazed trails through the entertainment world by forcing us to rethink our cherished totems at the same time that we’re snort-laughing. While many performers present their worldview as “just common sense,” Schumer, like Carlin, packs her wackiness with equal parts ludicrousness and rational thought. Where he turned seven dirty words into a legendary bit, she spends a sketch negotiating with God to please take away her genital herpes. Through Schumer’s eyes, we can’t help but see that humans are irrevocably terrible and stupid — and yet still capable of finding solutions to the messes we’ve created. This is the lens through which she crafted a rape joke of her own on her Comedy Central TV show, Inside Amy Schumer. In a sketch titled “A Very Realistic Military Game,” Schumer discovers that when she plays a new Call of Duty-esque video game as a female, her character gets sexually assaulted and has to spend the game filing a harrassment case instead of shooting up bad guys. What’s striking is that in Schumer’s gag, the
punchline is the world’s idiotic reactions to rape; it’s not the victim who’s being laughed at. This is a nuance that’s been lost on many comics who lack either the insight or creativity to satirically “punch up” instead of bullyingly “punching down.” There’s a degree of genius required in evoking an “OMG! No! You can’t say that!” from the crowd while making a larger political point. My fondness for Schumer started
with her standup act, in which she unashamedly talks about being a sexually active woman without relying on sophomoric gross-outs or the novelty of “Look! It’s a lady talking like a douchebag!” My love for her was cemented by a speech she gave at a Ms. magazine gala about finding lifelong self-confidence from a depressingly unsatisfactory 8am hookup. The tears that had gathered at corners of my eyes were shaken away by laughter.
Mine is not a hallow fandom, though. For instance, I enjoyed her shtick about Plan B, but, as a sex educator, found my eye twitching uncontrollably in agitation over how factually inaccurate it was. The thing is, though, the onstage character Schumer plays perfectly lampoons the average person’s uninformed sexual choices and hypocrisy around sexual ethics. She’s not some dumb comic who doesn’t get how birth control works — she’s every hypocritical American who wants to judge others for “irresponsible” sexual activity while finding an endless stream of rationalizations for her own. Schumer may be a feminist comic, but her job isn’t to articulate political philosophy or to throw snark at the regressive bulwarks of society. That’s what Tumblr and Jezebel are for. No, her job is to make people giggle so much they pee themselves. In the course of doing so on Inside Amy Schumer, she casts a far greater number of talented female comedians than do most shows — while presenting a female viewpoint as a matter-of-fact everyday norm, not a special niche. Rather than ranting about self-declared “Nice Guys” who feel entitled to sex from women they’ve befriended, she mocks them hilariously in a sketch called “Hello, M’Lady,” imagining an iPhone app women can use to juggle the various creepy dudes who think they are dating her. Instead of waxing philosophical about the way women are socialized to deny their own value, she offers “Compliments,” a sketch that sees women responding to simple praises on their looks with outrageous denials like “I’m a f—ing cow. Indian people are trying to worship me. I sleep standing up in a field.” She even tackles the minefield of gender and sexual libertinism in one sketch she opens by looking into the camera and announcing: “I’m Amy Schumer, and I’m proud to say I’m a feminist, and today I’m hosting my very first gang bang.” There’s telling and there’s showing. We can debate whether or not someone should tell a joke about a touchy situation. But what Amy Schumer will show is that she sure as hell can. n

and Grille at Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield (1 Leo Fraser Drive) is the provenance of chef Ed Daggers. Casual but eclectic, his shore-inspired bill of fare includes starter Creole BBQ shrimp; sautéed jumbo shrimp with garlic, peppers, celery and onion in a beer/Cajun butter broth served with garlic toast. And “Mom’s meatloaf,” with mushroom pan gravy, garlic mashed potatoes and Chinese vegetables is a classic, hearty home-style entree. Hidden on a side street behind the bus station, Red’s Jersey-Mex of Ocean City (11th and Haven Aves.) is a tiny gem that has delighted locals with unique, southwesterntinged food for over a decade. Their chili, in our opinion, is one of the very finest to be found regionally. Rich with multiple meats, this soulful blend is only prepared three months or so yearly, making Red’s lusty, ribsticking concoction all the more desirable. Linwood’s Central Square offers its very own secreted eatery, Chaba Thai. Landlocked at the rear of the upscale shopping complex, their versions of tom yum and tom kha — the beloved soups of that southeastern Asian land — pack plenty of warmth through ginger or galangal (also known as “blue ginger”). Combined with a protein of choice plus lemongrass, mushrooms, cilantro, onion, limejuice and intoxicating Thai chiles, these are healthful, energizing bowls of broth as well. We’d be remiss not acknowledging the area’s original Vietnamese eatery, Atlantic City’s Little Saigon (2801 Arctic Avenue) open since the early ‘90s. Here, steaming bowls of pho soup are featured, with upwards of more than a dozen varieties. Don’t miss the amazing shrimp in sugar cane either, an ideal balance of sweetness and heat convening to fashion a marvelous starter. n

s the final zephyrs of summer succumb to autumn’s cool, it’s a timely moment to look at some excellent local cuisine that’s reflective of the harvest season. Stews, braises, soups and roasts comprise some of the A.C. area’s finest fall fare. Start with a most venerable dining haven, the Smithville Inn (1 North New York Road) lovingly restored to its colonial-era glory via the gracious hands of the Coppola family. Here you’ll find a signature entrée just about perfect this time of year; Smithville chicken pot pie, laden with poultry, dumplings and vegetables in a silky veloute sauce, topped with house-made flaky crust. We also like the sound of their braised short rib Forestiere, accompanied by wild mushrooms, broccolini, grana padana, truffle butter and tubes of paccheri pasta. Steven Kalt’s Fornelletto at Borgata offers a trio of plates wonderfully in concert with the season. First, Hunter’s Pie combines game hen, duck, rabbit, spring onions, peas, mushrooms and carrots in a marsala wine sauce. South Philly Italian favorite porchetta, gets sided by braised swiss chard & broccoli rabe with natural pork jus or lamb shank — “risi bisi” — risotto with English peas, Parmigiano Reggiano and mint gremolata. Downbeach legend Steve & Cookie’s of Margate (9700 Amherst Avenue) plates an app of Cherry Grove sausage, radicchio and white bean in casserole accented by white wine and fennel butter. And of course, the chef’s proprietary “Warner’s bouillabaisse,” rich with shrimp, scallops, crabmeat, fish and clams in a traditional Pernod and saffron broth. Tuscan bread for lapping up that luscious, golden liquid should help alleviate any residual chill you might be encountering. One of the most truly underrated restaurants in our region, the Taproom Bar

DAVID FINCHER’S ‘GONE GIRL’ PRESENTS A COUPLE CONSUMED BY DECEIT — BUT IS IT MURDER? BY LORI HOFFMAN

book. Let’s just say that as we learn more about Amy, she seems to be transformed into a twisted version of Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite female protagonist, the cool blonde who keeps her emotions deeply in check. In Gone Girl, we see what happens when that cool Hitchcockian blonde explodes. Both author Flynn and Fincher seem delighted to use this format to take a few satirical jabs at those real-life detective talking heads from the cable news programs (Nancy Grace, come on down), embodied by Missi Pyle and Sela Ward in amusing cameo roles. However, the heart of the story is the marriage that has tumbled over a cliff. Affleck gives a terrific performance as a husband who understands he did his part to make his marriage crumble — but also is sure he didn’t deserve this level of payback. Then there’s the performance that is the glue in Gone Girl: Rosamund Pike’s Amy. She knows she deserves better than Nick, and while her notion of a reason-

able response is to go totally nuts, she does it with style. Of course, another of her admirers, played by Neil Patrick Harris, would violently disagree with that assessment of cool Miss Amy. By the time Fincher is done, it’s a story that would fit in nicely as a chapter in the popular TV horror anthology American Horror Story. Gone Girl proves that you can find horror in the midwest just as much as in an insane asylum or witches’ coven. n

ased on the popular novel by Gillian Flynn, who adapted her book for the screen, Gone Girl is a movie in sync with two seasons: the Oscar-bait seriousmovie season and Halloween. How are these two disparate seasons brought together? By the constant sense of savage, yet controlled, rage that permeates director David Fincher’s examination of a marriage that’s gone so wrong that a frame job and murder seem like a measured, reasonable response to the emotional transgressions of the parties involved. Well — reasonable if one of the parties is a psychopath. Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) is the husband, a man lacking in the drive and ambition to truly satisfy a woman of means: in this case, his beautiful, elegant and cool-on-thesurface wife Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike). On their fifth wedding anniversary, he comes home to find a glass table in the living room shattered and his wife missing. He goes to the police, and at first, the lead detective on the case (Kim Dickens) seems sympathetic. But as several days pass and more evidence comes to light, the disappearance ignites a media feeding frenzy — because Amy was a celebrity of sorts, the inspiration for a series of popular children’s books written by her parents. Nick, no longer revered as the devoted husband who wants to find his wife, sees his life rewritten in the news as a possible murderer whose anguish is merely a ruse to hide his evil deed. The revelation of his affair with a younger woman takes the air out of the sympathy balloon even more. As the wolves nip at his heels and the police shift their focus, Nick’s only sympathy comes from his twin sister Margo (Carrie Coon), who never liked Amy. At this point, one can’t reveal what comes next, since that will spoil the movie for those who haven’t read the
