t was 1964, right around the time people were driving the final nails into Atlantic City’s tourism coffin. No one knew it at the time, but Frank Sinatra had played his last gig at his pal Skinny D’Amato’s famous 500 Club, the last of the A-listers to grace the stage of the Fives. From then on, Skinny was happy to get B-list stars to entertain the C-list out-of-towners who’d remained loyal to Atlantic City as their vacation playground or — more likely — couldn’t afford plane tickets to more exotic destinations like Miami Beach, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Hawaii. But this down-on-her-heels dowager of a tourist spot and convention town still had strong nightlife pulse at “KY and The Curb, which is what hipsters of the day called the intersection of Kentucky and Arctic avenues. With places like the legendary Club Harlem and, a few steps away, the Wonder Garden nightclub, Kentucky Avenue had become the entertainment epicenter of Atlantic City. And there, soaking it all in and gaining a musical education while earning a paycheck, was “Little Georgie from Pittsburgh. “Little Georgie was barely old enough to order a drink when he played guitar for the Wonder Garden headliner, the jazz organist known as Brother Jack McDuff. History will reflect that not long after he underwent his baptism by booze in Atlantic City, “Little Georgie was able to shed his nickname in favor of the one on his birth certificate, which read George Benson. When I saw that Benson was coming to Harrah’s Resort for a one-night stand this Saturday, it reminded me of an interview I’d done with him about 10 years ago prior to another casino gig. Only it wasn’t an interview. It turned into more of a nostalgic and wistful chat that was part history lesson and part vicarious walk to KY and the Curb. I figured it would be an exercise in futility to locate either the tape or my notes from that session. I’ve saved just about everything career-related over the years; locating where individual items live is a different story. But miracles do happen: Turns out the notes were on an old CD that I used to store backup files. Benson recalled his early years working his way through the ranks of the music business, and said he always loved when McDuff or any of the other bands he used to play with had an extended run in Atlantic City. When the Wonder Garden sets ended at about 3am, the night (or morning) was just beginning for Benson. Before the last notes faded, he was already out the door and headed down Kentucky Avenue to Grace’s Little Belmont, a bar across the street from the Club Harlem where the barkeep — Elvera “Baby Sanchez — was as much a local legend as her son was a global one. His name was Sammy Davis, Jr.

“Oh, man, Grace’s was where I taught [jazz composer and organist] Charlie Earland chord changes, Benson recalled. “See, Charlie, he played by ear, just like me. Only thing is, my ear was a little more finely tuned for harmonies. Charlie, he had a gift for rhythm. So he helped me with rhythms and I helped him out on the melodies. Those were some very special days. We had a lot of fun every time we worked Atlantic City. Benson’s accounts of the early days of his life and career are included in his just-off-the-presses Benson: The Autobiography. Atlantic City was always a special place for him to perform, first as a sideman for better-known artists and then as a jazz-crossover star who had hit singles on the pop, R&B and jazz charts, like “Give Me the Night, “This Masquerade and “On Broadway. As he’s done throughout his career, Benson remains relevant not necessarily by reinventing himself, but by reinventing the musical company he keeps. He takes great delight in surprising his audience by occasionally working with artists who are just a little outside his musical box. At 71, he stays on top of contemporary music trend and has worked with — and learned from — younger artists like Mary J. Blige and, before her, the acid jazz band Nuyorican Soul. His most recent album, 2013’s Inspiration, is a tribute to the late Nat King Cole and features an all-star lineup of contributors, including Wynton Marsalis, Idina Menzel and Judy Hill. Of all his hits, both instrumental and vocal, Benson seems to like “This Masquerade the most, not necessarily because of his performance but for the arrangement. “What a lot of people don’t realize about the song is that it’s basically the exact same chords and changes as [the saloon ballad] ‘Angel Eyes,’ he explains. “That’s one of the reasons why jazz musicians love to play that song. Benson also credited Leon Russell, who originally wrote the song for himself in 1972, with creating the arrangement that Benson used to make the song a hit. For Russell, the song was merely the “B side to a single. “Leon was a genius with the way he wrote that song, Benson said. “He topped the original melody in a way so that it wasn’t just a jazz song, and that’s why audiences accepted it as a pop tune. N Watch the Emmy-winning Curtain Call with David Spatz, Saturdays at 6pm on WMGM-TV NBC40.

GEORGE BENSON Saturday, Oct. 25. 9pm. Concert Venue at Harrah’s Resort, 777 Harrah’s Blvd., A.C. Tickets: $55–$85. 800.745.3000. harrahsresort.com

ob Saget grew up in suburban Philadelphia — Abington, to be precise — and recalls in detail what it was like summering in Atlantic City as a child of the ’70s. “My parents had a house there, and it was the greatest,” the comedian tells Atlantic City Weekly by phone from L.A. “I remember the Boardwalk and the beach and going to Captain Starn’s. The house was between the Showboat and the marina — it isn’t there anymore, but I remember it. Places and people change.” Indeed. Take Saget himself, who morphed from a kid hanging out on the Boardwalk into a decorated filmmaker at Temple University, then into a raunchy comic who played the most wholesome television dad ever in the ABC hit Full House — which remains popular in syndication 20 years after its last episode ran, even spawning rumors of a possible reboot. “It’s crazy,” Saget says. “People still come to me and tell me how much they love Full House. They tell me how they grew up on it and their kids watch it. We had so much fun on that show. I enjoyed [hosting] America’s Funniest Videos, too — those shows are very different from who I am as a stand-up, but they paid a lot of bills.” Nothing wrong with letting a wholesome gig or two support a lifetime of edgy comedy. Saget will return Friday to the Borgata, bringing his trademark no-holds-barred shtick: “I don’t let anything bother me,” he insists. “I’m just me up there.” That said, Saget offstage is not the same as his filthy-mouthed comic persona, but comes across as a soft-spoken, thoughtful guy. Still, there’s a common denominator: Onstage and off, he’s equally adept at spinning yarns with quick wit and charm. “I”m fortunate because I love what I do,” he says. “I get to do what I love.” Another one of those awesome gigs: providing the voice of Ted Mosby on the long-running CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. “Another great opportunity,” he says. “I didn’t even have to get into makeup for that part. That was amazing.” He’s looking forward to hitting the shore this week, he says: “It’s always like a homecoming whenever I play Atlantic City or around Philadelphia. Friends and family come out. I love it.” ■

THE DANCE OF DR ACUL A THE ATL ANTIC CIT Y BALLET’S PHYLLIS PAPA BRINGS A LIT TLE DARKNESS TO THE HIGH ARTS BY STEPH EN H . S EGA L

A

fter 32 years onstage, this is the Atlantic City Ballet’s first season with a proper home theater — at the Claridge Hotel — in the city itself. The troupe is doing things up in style: Its Halloween extravaganza, an original adaptation of Dracula by the ballet’s founding director, Phyllis Papa, promises to be a passionate two hours of incredible dancing. AC Weekly chatted with Papa this week about the show, the company and what’s in store.

Dracula is one of the most famous tales of the past century. When you sit down to approach crafting a new version for the stage, where do you start? The reason I created Dracula in the first place in 2006 is that I was really looking for something new that would appeal to new audience and younger audiences — not children so much as teenagers, 20-year-olds. I thought: Hmmm, older people know this story — but younger people are really into vampires. Dracula was not popular with the dance world; it’s not like your typical ballet. There are only a few choreographers who’ve really done it... I wanted to create something that would incorporate elements of jazz and other dance forms. So I took music that was popular with young people — from Japanese cartoons, things they would have heard on the internet — to kind of entice them. The first time I did the show, I had fifteen composers in the score. It’s down to three now, but the music is a big part of this.

This is a horror story. How eerie do you go? Generally when you think of ballet, you don’t think of something scary. But I made the theater really dark: There are some blackouts, some scary moments. I thought about putting blood in it, but it doesn’t show up so well onstage. So I’ve taken it out, but you still get the bite — you still get Lucy coming out of the coffin and becoming a vampire. It’s pretty intense.

Tell us about your cast — what do these performers bring to their characters? Kristaps Kikulis, who plays Dracula, is from Latvia. He’s kind of a big man, and he’s an excellent actor and a very good partner. When I first did Dracula in 2006, I had a Romanian guy who was very big, too; the Romanians really know the story well, it’s part of their culture growing up. Kristaps has been doing it for five years now; the role needs a guy who can really act — who can be convincing playing both a young man and an old man. Lucy is played by Sumire Ito, and Sumi, too, is an incredible actress. Lucy’s role is almost more demanding, acting-wise, because she has to go from a very sweet girl to a vampire. And there’s s a section in there where she’s very ill and goes

through a lot of mental agony — you can see that in how I did the choreography; she looks like she’s going insane. The cast really come alive onstage. For instance, when Jonathan Harker is going to Dracula’s house in a carriage, the dancers form a human carriage, lifting him up and carrying him.

This is your first season basing the Atlantic City Ballet’s performances at the Claridge. In the past we’ve taken Dracula all the way down to Georgia, come up through South Jersey, done it in New York City — we’ve been touring. This is the first time we’ve really had a home in the city. So we’re trying to appeal to the Atlantic City audience to come and see us — to let them know that Atlantic City has a professional company and that this is not like a dance school doing a recital! Every great city in

the United Statees has a ballet company — Philadelphia, New York, and so on — and now Atlantic City has a ballet that’s performing regularly here.

For the Halloween performance, you’re inviting the audience to come in costume? This year, we’re going to have the dancers judge the best costumes and give out prizes. I’ll be in costume too! And i’m hoping the staff and our board will come dressed up — we’ll see. I’m going to be a medieval wench in garb from the 1500s. ■

AC BALLET’S DRACULA Oct. 24–26: 7pm. Oct. 31: 10pm. Claridge Hotel, Park Place & Boardwalk, A.C. Tickets: $40–$55 (general), $20 (children). 609-348-0031. acballet.org

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • OCTOBER 23 - 30, 2014

ven though Peter Yarrow enjoyed considerable success as a member of the seminal ’60s folksinging trio Peter, Paul and Mary, he never acted like a pop star. No, the erudite songsmith always identified with the disenfranchised, the so-called little people. So it came as no surprise when, about fifteen years ago, he started the anti-bullying campaign known as “Operation Respect. “It all started with a song, Yarrow recalls. And not one of his own songs, either, but one written by Allen Shamblin and Steve Seskin. “That song is ‘Don’t Laugh At Me.’ The words are so powerful — they just are so true. I already knew there was a breakdown in schools before I heard the song. I thought something should be done. Yarrow founded Operation Respect in 2000; less than a year later, in the face of the Columbine High School killings, it seemed sadly prophetic. “It’s time to end the cruelty, Yarrow says today, “and return with respect for each other. Operation Respect continues to provide anti-bullying resources to schools today. Meanwhile, for Yarrow, 76, the music goes on — most immediately, this Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Stockton Performing Arts Center, where he’ll do an afternoon children’s matinee as well as an evening show being billed as “conversation and song. “Music has been my life, Yarrow says. “I’ve only gravitated toward what I love. I especially loved being part of Peter, Paul and Mary. The folk trio, which also included Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, formed in 1961. After going their own way for much of the ‘70s, they got back together around the dawn of the Reagen era and remained intact until Travers passed away in 2009. Yarrow wrote their signature song, “Puff the Magic Dragon, while gorgeous covers of tunes by contemporaries like Bob Dylan (“Blowin’ in the Wind), John Denver (“Leaving on a Jet Plane) and Pete Seeger (“If I Had a Hammer) helped cement their place in the musical pantheon. “We had a great deal of success, Yarrow says. “We did very well, particularly for a folk act. But the most important thing is that we never compromised, and we brought out the best in each other. We did the right thing. I remember when we were told by the record company, ‘Don’t go to this [civil rights]

Bottle Company (648 N. Albany Ave. in West A.C.), Oktoberfest beers and other seasonal brews will be offered on the beverage menu in its restaurant component, the Iron Room. All Oktoberfest beers in the liquor store will be an additional 10 percent off, with samplings going on throughout the week. The Chart House, Golden Nugget’s fine seafood house, has made several notable additions to their bill of fare designed in the Oktoberfest vein. Among them are a Port wine glazed grouper or sea bass, savory wild mushroom salad, a smoked bacon and fresh fig flatbread, duck confit spring rolls, blood orange lacquered King salmon and mustard braised pork medallions. â–

ecently unveiled by esteemed regional restaurateur Joe Tucker,

Catch 2401 (2401 Atlantic Avenue) has been pinging our

dining radar. Paying a visit on a cool, breezy Saturday night, we were quite taken with the clean, monochromatic atmosphere — offset by teal and orange hues — and sophisticated, seafood-centric menu. Immediately enamored by another diner’s plate, we ordered a chicken-fried lobster starter. The sizzling portion, three pieces of halved whole tail, was just the right size for a fine first salvo: Crusted with cornmeal, the crustaceans curled up angrily just a bit inside crispy shells. The meat itself, warm within and luscious, had been exposed to hot oil only long enough to impact it’s exterior texture. A beet salad, relatively ubiquitous on regional menus of late, gets a nice retooling here. Piled in equal portions on either side of a long, narrow dish, these neatly diced, underground denizens book-ended a bounteous mound of chopped Tuscan kale, tossed with crunchy pistachios, soft chevre and a balsamic reduction. A quartet of seared scallops were presented atop a beautifully crafted asparagus and crab risotto. The little discs, like an ode to the majesty of the ocean, had been dusted with color but left quite cool within, while the rice was carefully, slowly manifested, allowing all of its natural depth to develop — resulting in a moist, creamy foundation upon which the scallops were perched. Our second entrĂŠe, red snapper, was one of four fresh daily fish additions. Two large fillets were delivered, sautĂŠed and crusted with an herbal blend that although tasty but a bit too salt-forward for snapper’s natural sweetness. Well-cooked but slightly cool green beans accompanied; we thoroughly enjoyed this entree, despite finding it a bit steeply priced at $34. Our desserts were both admirable: mine a massive portion of pound cake strewn with assorted berries and whipped cream and my dining partner’s Mason jar filled with a warm, gooey brownie, accompanied by ramekins of chocolate sauce and wet nuts. Open Thursdays through Sundays through the end of the year, Catch 2401 is definitely worthy of a return visit. ďż˝ F.G . BEHIND THE SCENES | AC Weekly bids a fond adieu to one the classiest, savviest casino PR people ever to work in this town: Caesars wunderkind Jerry Eisenband. A NJ native, a Rutgers grad and one of our own 2014 “Top 40 Under 40â€? honorees, Eisenband has been a dynamic presence on the Atlantic City scene since 2010. We wish Jerry and his brilliant bride Diana fabulous success in their new lives in South Carolina.

ANNUAL ATLANTIC CITY CINEFEST OFFERS FORUM FOR TALENTED UPANDCOMING FILMMAKERS BY LORI HOFFMAN

‘This Time Next Year’ ning across the same people. “Even though Sandy is the inciting incident of the film, we don’t like to think of This Time Next Year as a Sandy movie. It’s a portrait of a place and a very specific way of life and the people who choose that way of life.” Reichert, whose previous film that played the festival was the acclaimed political expose Gerrymandering, has another film that is opening in theaters in November, Remote Area Medical, about an organization that helps bring medical care to the Appalachian community. He and Zaham had a short film Kombit premiere at Sundance last year. This Time Next Year will be screened Saturday, Oct. 25, 5:15pm, at the Noyes Art Garage. ■

he Downbeach Film Festival is an annual showcase for independent filmmakers taking place this year October 24-26. It was the vision of Bill Solokic, founder and chairman of the AC Cinefest/Downbeach Film Festival, to create a showcase for talented filmmakers, many of whom get their start making short features. It is also a terrific opportunity for filmmakers from the tri-state area to take the next step. An appearance at the AC Cinefest might lead to the film being presented at other film festivals across the country. A filmmaker with local roots has been a regular cinematic voice at the AC Cinefest. Jeff Reichert, who lived in Northfield and attended Mainland High School, will have a film at the festival. The documentary This Time Next Year, which he co-directed and produced with his wife Farihah Zaman, is about life on Long Beach Island one year after Hurricane Sandy hit. The film shows us some ordinary yet extraordinary people picking up the pieces and helping their neighbors on the island that was their little bit of paradise until Sandy hit. Now they are determined to make it their paradise one again coming together. These are the people who demonstrated they were “Stronger than the Storm,” making it much more than an easy-to-digest political slogan. Reichert explains what inspired him and his wife to tell this story. “As everyone knows, Sandy hit Brooklyn pretty badly where we live. It wasn’t long after the storm that we started thinking about LBI — it’s where a lot of my family is from, where I spent a lot of time growing up and where we got engaged. We couldn’t get down to shoot until a few months later and we, naively, thought most people would be back in their homes. Once we realized how far off we were, we decided to stick around for the year.” You found some amazing people who banded together. “Most of the folks were recommended by my family,” explains Reichert, “like Joe and Becky and Dawn. The community is so tight that as we kept shooting, we kept run-
