THE ART OF THE HUMAN SURFACE THE ATL ANTIC CIT Y TATTOO EXPO OFFERS A FRESH WAY TO SEE EACH OTHER

O

nce in a while, especially during my twenties, new acquaintances trying to figure me out would ask if I had any tattoos. “Good Lord, no, I’d say, slightly surprised every time at my own vehemence. “Why not? they’d follow up. “Well, I’d say, “I guess I’ve just never thought of any picture I like so much that I’d want to see it in the mirror every day. Or, if I was feeling particularly roguish: “Are you crazy? When the aliens invade and institute a fascist reptilian dictatorship, why would I want to have any extra identifying marks on my body to make it easier for them to track me? Both these answers were, I felt, reasonable. But neither was all the way true. This would have been the truest answer: I never wanted a tattoo because I am neurotic about the danger of messing things up. I was the kid who never wanted to go out into my backyard in the winter and play in the snow, because the pure, fluffy snowbanks were so amazingly pristine that I didn’t want to ruin them with footprints. And,

though I never really thought of it consciously, in retrospect I can see I felt the same way about tattoos: that they ruined a precious natural aesthetic. That’s how I felt. But I was wrong. The older I get, the more people I meet, the more I love to see what sort of art they’ve adorned themselves with. Everyone has a vision of how they want to present their being to the world, and tattoos at their finest are the distilled essence of that artistic individuality. I still don’t have one. But now I think that just makes me a coward. I’ll have the opportunity to correct that situation this weekend. The Atlantic City Tattoo Expo is back at the Tropicana Nov. 7–9, featuring contests, entertainment, parties and celebrity guests from shows like Ink Masters and Tattoo Rescue. It’ll be a blast. And it’ll be beautiful. Come see the sights. ■More info: actattooexpo.com

ATLANTIC CITY

MASTERS OF ILLUSION THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 15, 22 & 29 ON SALE THIS FRIDAY AT 10AM!

nce again, greetings and salutations to those in costume and those out of costume, with a special hello to Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolf Man, the Wicked Witch and Glinda the Good — I know they’re out there somewhere this weekend. And it’s a great weekend. As of this writing, the Geator is about to embark on the high seas for the completely sold-out Malt Shop Memories Cruise sailing Nov. 2. This is the fifth straight year, and it gets better and better. In fact, many of the artists on this cruise, including my man Lloyd Price, will be joining us on Jan. 24 for our Legends of Rock and Soul at the Kimmel Center. Lloyd is on it, as is Gene Chandler, the Duke of Earl, plus Chuck Jackson (“Any Day Now”), “Just a Dream” Jimmy Clanton, and, for the first time ever on the East Coast, Mel Carter (“Hold Me, Thrill Me”). With the holidays around the corner, it’s a great Christmas gift. For more info, go to kimmelcenter.org or call (215) 893-1999. Back here at the shore, the Golden Nugget is still the hottest spot on Thursdays when we go live from the Live Bar from 5-7pm, and you hear the repeats on the Geator Gold Radio Network from 7-9pm right here on WTKU Kool 98.3 FM. But right now, let’s go trick or treating as you ask the Geator: Hi Jerry! Loved this summer at the Deck at Golden Nugget. Question for you. Bobby Rydell had a great girl backup group with his records “Wildwood Days,” “The Cha Cha Cha,” “Wild One,” etc. Their harmony and their vocals really added to the songs. While Bobby still enjoys immense popularity, no one mentions anything about his backup group from those days. It would be nice to give them some recognition. I’m sure you and Bobby know the answers.

Keep rockin,’ Geat! (Dan) — According to Linda Hoffman, Bobby’s wonderful assistant and president of his fan club (not to be confused with his wife, also named Linda Hoffman), “the backup singers on Bobby’s recordings for the Cameo label were actually non-professionals. They were three gospel-singing grandmothers who sang for their local church in Philadelphia. They fashioned Bobby’s trademark whoa-whoas and yeah-yeahs. The Beatles tipped their hats to Bobby’s music in their first recording of ‘She Loves You’ (yeah, yeah, yeah) — true fact as stated by Paul McCartney in The Beatles Anthology book.” And here’s a great trivia question for you. Which of Bobby’s hits did Paul claim was the inspiration for “She Loves You”? (Answer at the end of the column.) I never heard of Tommy Edwards until I started listening to your program. Is he still alive and would he ever appear anywhere? (Margaret P., Philadelphia) — Unfortunately Tommy passed away in 1969 of a brain aneurysm, only 47 years of age. His biggest hit was “It’s All In the Game” in 1958, but if you listen to my shows, especially “The Geator’s Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues Express” every Saturday on WXPN, you will hear some of his lesser known gems, including “Please Love Me Forever” and “It’s Only the Good Times.” Trivia answer: According to Paul McCartney, he and John had “Forget Him” in mind when they were writing “She Loves You.” ■ Got a question for Jerry? Write AskTheGeator@ acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. More info on Jerry’s appearances is at www.geator.net. Keep on rocking, ’cause you only rock once!

MOOD MUSIC

J

ust on the strength of their career statistics, the Moody Blues — now in their 50th year of existence — should have long since been enshrined in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Modern music’s original cosmic cowboys, they’ve recorded 23 studio and live albums, 18 of which went platinum or gold. They’ve sold 70 million albums worldwide and, while their demographics now skew mostly to the AARP crowd, they remain a relevant touring act that can quickly sell out a small arena whenever a gig gets posted. But in the eyes of the HOF nominating committee — led by Rolling Stone magazine cofounder and publisher Jan Wenner, who hates progressive rock — the Moody Blues have been left out in the Cleveland cold. While bands that have had far less of an impact or influence in popular music and haven’t sold one-tenth of the product have long since been enshrined in the hall, the Moodies haven’t even been nominated for the honor. But lead singer Justin Hayward isn’t about to lose a minute of sleep over the snub. In 2012, Hayward — who’ll perform solo in A.C. Friday night, at the Borgata’s Music Box — told Billboard magazine he feels sorry for fans of

the band who have campaigned for the group’s nomination for decades. “I do feel for our fans, because it really is important to them,â€? he said. But as a native of Great Britain, he said the HOF might be surprised to learn that it lacks the cachĂŠ in Europe it enjoys in the United States. “As a British person and particularly a European, people have never heard of (the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame),â€? Hayward explained. “It doesn’t impact anybody. It’s an American thing, really. If you want to run a hall of fame and get people coming through and it’s a great tourist attraction, that’s fine. But it doesn’t impact me at all.â€? Take that, Jan Wenner. Frankly, there are Moody Blues fans who believe that just one song out of their extensive catalogue should be enough to qualify them for the HOF: Hayward’s “Nights in White Satin,â€? one of the first pieces he wrote when he joined the group in 1967. The song was released as a single several times but didn’t catch fire till 1972, when it reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and hit the top of the Cash Box list. Since then, it’s been used in other mediums and has been included in more than a dozen motion pictures ranging from Martin Scorsese’s Casino to

Robert DeNiro’s directorial debut with A Bronx Tale and Rob Zombie’s fright flick Halloween 2. “It’s a song that never seems to go away,â€? said Hayward, 68, who will include the number in his set on Friday. “It seemed to get into people’s minds and just stay there. The whole thing’s very strange and wonderful.â€? Last month, he told the Web site musicradar. com that “Nightsâ€? changed his life and the lives of the band forever. He remembered writing the song after finishing a gig with the band and had returned to his one-room flat. The Moody Blues already had one hit — 1964’s “Go Nowâ€? — but that was three years earlier and with mostly a different lineup of musicians and a completely different sound. “I sat on the side of the bed and wrote the basic two verses and two choruses with a 12-string acoustic,â€? he said. “I took it to the rehearsal room the next day‌and I played it for (the rest of the band) and they were like, ‘Huh‌ it’s OK.’ I don’t think they were that thrilled.â€? But keyboardist Mike Pinder, a founding member of the band, asked Hayward to play the song again. As Hayward strummed the guitar, Pinder fired up the Mellotron, a forerunner to the musical synthesizer that relied on looped

recording of taped musical notes. “As I sang ‘Nights in white satin‌ ’ he did that little ‘da da da-da-da-da-daaa’ on the Mellotron,â€? Hayward said. “Then everybody [in the band] seemed to get interested. It made sense to them. Once he delivered that phrase, which is really quite important, the song started working for them.â€? The song was included on the Moody Blues groundbreaking album Days of Future Passed, which was released around the time The Beatles were creating a subset of rock ‘n’ roll with their album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Hayward admitted the Moody Blues drew plenty of inspiration from the Fab Four. “To be part of the musical scene in London during that whole period was amazing,â€? he said. “The Beatles... showed us the way. ‘Sgt. Pepper’ and ‘Strawberry Fields’ and other songs they did at the time gave us the freedom to try anything.â€? â–

e Grand Fromage, Atlantic City’s staple for live original music for more than four decades, is hosting a Halloween Ball to benefit the nonprofit, volunteer-run, Atlantic Countybased South Jersey Horse Rescue (southjerseyhorserescue.org) on Friday night. About 16 acts, including full bands, acoustic solo musicians and three comedians, will be part of the festivities from 6pm-3am. The show is produced by Norstep Productions and sponsored by alternative rock radio station WJSE 106.3 FM out of North Cape May. It will include a costume contest for prizes, a concert ticket giveaway, a $15 beer bracelet, and will serve as the official release party for legendary South Jersey punk-rock accordionist Malcolm Tent’s new compilation called Pun Crock. Each act will perform approximately 40 minutes on either an upstairs or downstairs stage. A portion of the $10 advance ticket price ($15 at the door; go to eventbrite.com and search “Le Grand Fromage”) will benefit South Jersey Horse Rescue, which is located just north of Egg Harbor City and serves as a sanctuary for distressed horses and other members of the equine family. “The lady who runs it, Ellen Strack, does a nice thing with these abused or neglected horses,” says Stephen Weiss of Norstep Productions. “In some cases she purchases [otherwise healthy] horses at auction that were destined for sale to be slaughtered as meat in other countries. It’s all based on donations and fundraisers, so I said, ‘Let me see what I can do to help her out.’” Among the bands slated to perform are The Gantry, Position 9, Twist of Fate, The Only Way, The Choices, The Total Soundholes, and Gordon’s Alley. Solo artists include Chip Rishell, Julie Rose, Khalid Quesada, Nick Jablon, Joe Playo and Heather Wood. Performing comedy will be Bubbles, Zack Picket and Kevin Carney. N

A FIERY POET’S LIFE

P

DOUBLE TAKE CATCHING UP WITH PHILLIP PHILLIPS , THE AM ERI C AN I D O L WINNER SO NICE THEY NAMED HIM T WICE BY ED CO N D R A N ith a name like Phillip Phillips, the last thing a young singer-songwriter needs to be is redundant. Fortunately, Phillips likes variety. His last album, The World From The Side of the Moon, boasted inflections of jazz, funk and soul. This time around, his latest release — Behind the Light, which dropped in May — showcases straightforward, poignant pop-rock tunes built upon the strumming of an acoustic guitar. “I like to mix it up,” says Phillips, who’ll perform Saturday at Harrah’s. “There’s no need to be repetitive.” The winner of American Idol’s 11th season — in 2012, the last year the singing-competition reality show had under celebrity judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez — Phillips is a charismatic entertainer under the lights. “That’s something I’ve naturally been able to do,” he tells Atlantic City Weekly. “I love getting out in front of people and playing my music.” And it is his music. Unlike many of his Idol peers, Phillips is not just a sweet set of vocal cords, but a solid writer; four of the songs on his new album were composed solely by Phillips, and eight were collaborations. “I’ve always been about expressing myself,” he says. “I want to be the best songwriter that I can be.” He’s not zealous about it, though: “If I have the chance to sing a great song written by someone else, I’m more than fine with that.” Phillips has found that his fan base has been loyal since his Idol days. “The fans never left me,” he says. “They supported me on American Idol and have stayed with me. It’s amazing.”

The musician’s got that same spirit of stick-to-it-ness himself. During his Idol experience, Phillips endured eight surgeries for kidney stones, never publicly revealing what he was going through. “I didn’t want to do that,” he says. Because the competition, he says, “wasn’t about me dealing with things — it was about the music. That’s what it had to be about.” He tips his cap to Tyler and Lopez: “They’re both amazing,” Phillips said. “I learned so much from both of them. There is nobody like Steven Tyler and Jennifer is awesome. I was very fortunate to have had them as judges.” He also recognizes the good fortune involved in his first-place finish — even as he notes that other Idol alums such as Chris Daughtry have gone on to hugely successful careers without actually winning. “I’m so pleased to have received such amazing exposure,” he says. “I had that happen, and I got a record deal — and I’m just trying to keep on getting better all the time. Just because you do well on American Idol doesn’t guarantee you anything. You have to work harder than ever, and I’ve done that. But it’s no problem. I get to do what I love. You can’t beat that. I’m one of the lucky ones.” ■

PHILLIP PHILLIPS Sat., Nov. 1. 9pm. Harrah’s Resort, 777 Harrah’s Blvd., A.C. Tickets: $30–$50. 609.441.5786 ticketmaster.com

oets and their words have long been stubbornly stereotyped as flowery, simple and unserious, even if their verses are brimming with double entendre and sly, subversive messages. For close to six decades, though, Amiri Baraka defied that narrow view. The crusading poet lobbed verses like hellfire, bent on a mission to upend oppression as he saw it in a country for which he fought and a world he desperately wanted to heal — beginning and ending in his own beloved birthplace of Newark, N.J., where he died earlier this year. This week, locals will have the chance to experience the poet’s work at Dante Hall, where theatre director Connie Norwood is staging “A Night of Amiri Baraka,” featuring Baraka’s award-winning play The Dutchman. It’s a remarkable opportunity to celebrate a remarkable artistic life that began way back in the 1950s. As the former LeRoi Jones, his name was often evoked alongside of fellow writers like Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and the rest of the Beat Generation. By the ‘60s, a new consciousness and empowerment flowed even more freely from his verses as he, along with Sonia Sanchez, Askia M. Touré, Nikki Giovanni and others, forged the Black Arts movement that gave birth to black studies departments across the country. In ensuing years, Baraka would proclaim himself a Marxist, a socialist or just an adherent to any philosophy that prized the virtue of struggle for freedom from imperialistic or jingoistic policies and mindsets. He lifted his pen like a battle flag and plunged into this war — often criticized as quixotic by people of all colors. “The world will always remember him as a literary genius and iconoclast, but he wasn’t an angel,” said Wilma Grey, director of the Newark Public Library, who frequently ran into Baraka amid the stacks of books there. “He may have been controversial, but many people who have that kind of mind end up thinking a way that is so different than everyone else. When you look back over your shoulder in history, it paints a different story then when they were alive.” Baraka’s year-long stint as New Jersey’s state poet laureate, cut short in 2003 amid reaction to his volcanic post-9/11 screed “Somebody Blew Up America,” put the elder firebrand front-and-center nationally for the last time, exposing hungry young minds to his legendary lifelong courage and firm commitment to creating art that’s as enduring as it is provocative. “How rare, how wondrous it is for a poet to get a rise out of our dozing populace!” said Rita Dove, former U.S. poet laureate. “Whether one agreed with Amiri Baraka’s politics, and often I did not, his ability to rouse the complacent and disgruntled alike from their respective torpor was as undeniable as his artistic fervor. It’s impossible to imagine the Black Arts movement without his fiery presence... In my early days as a writer, he provoked me to wrestle with his powerful radical aesthetics and, in the process, to find my very own artistic perspective. I am grateful.” — NIA NGINA MEEKS

A NIGHT OF AMIRI BARAKA Thursday, Oct. 30–Sunday, Nov. 9. 8pm, Thursdays through Saturdays; Sunday matinees at 2pm. Tickets: $6-$8. 609.347.2162. stockton.edu/dantehalltheater

hen headstrong assistant D.A. Andi Dorfman left sleazeball and permanent-stain-on-The-Bachelorfranchise Juan Pablo in the dust on the reality show’s last season, she won over America and scored herself the leading gig in the sequel series,The Bachelorette. Out of the 25 gentleman callers vying for her affections, she chose fellow Hotlantan/ financial planner Josh Murray. The duo will headline The Pool After Dark’s Epic Saturday party this week; AC Weekly chatted them up ahead of time.

Have you ever been to Atlantic City? ANDI DORFMAN: This is my first time, so I’m pretty excited! You can probably find me at the slot machines. And in between spins, I’ll go visit the shops. JOSH MURRAY: I’ve never been, either. I’ll definitely be on the casino floor playing poker. I’ll leave the shopping and slot machines to Andi. What should we expect at The Pool? AD: I think it’s going to be a great night. I hope people are recovered from Halloween the night before. JM: Any party in Atlantic City has got to be a fun party, so I am excited to see everyone out there. How are the wedding plans going? I’m

thinking Boyz II Men, who taught the Bachelorette contestants how to sing “I’ll Make Love to You” on Episode 3, would be a great wedding band. AD: Ha — I would love Boyz II Men to be there. That was seriously one of the greatest moments of my life. After getting engaged, of course. JM: Except I forgot the words to the song. But if they play at our wedding, I will be sure to remember the words! AD: Wedding plans are just beginning, so it’s exciting. Can’t give away too many details, obviously, but hopefully everything comes together and it’s an amazing wedding. JM: I’m just ready to get married!

Name: LONGPORT MEDIA (00LOON); Width: 10 in; Depth: 2.63 in; Color: Black plus three

I had Josh picked from the moment he stepped out of the limo; you two seemed to have a special connection. How alike are you? AD: It’s funny: A lot of people I talk to say they had Josh pegged from the very first night. Looking back, I can kind of see it. But when you’re in the moment and you know it’s your one chance to do this, I think most people over-think everything — and also want to weigh their options. So it took me a little longer than the rest of the world to figure out Josh was the one. JM: We are very much alike. We both have strong personalities, but we also have the same sense of humor. AD: And we are both very competitive. We can play the stupidest games and yet get competitive with each other. JM: Yeah, but I always win. AD: He does. What’s next? Are there any plans to return to TV? JM: I don’t know if there are any plans yet for TV. The wedding is always an option that we are open to, so we’ll see. AD: Yeah, we’ll see. I’ve learned this year that you never know what to expect, so we never say never anymore. ■ Sat., Nov. 1, 10pm. JOHN WICK

Tw i t t e r : @ A C W E E K LY

QA

BY LORI HOFFMAN eanu Reeves’ ability to combine white-hot fury with a Zen-like sense of total calm is well utilized in the stylized gangster film John Wick. Playing a talented assassin who has been retired for several years after falling in love (Blue Blood’s Bridget Moynihan is seen in flashbacks), his title character is rudely shoved back into the gangster life by the idiot son Iosef (Alfie Allen) of his former Russian mobster boss Viggo (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s Michael Nyqvist). Iosef sees Wick’s car, decides he wants it, and not knowing of Wick’s background, breaks into his home with his crew and steals it, as well as killing Wick’s sweet little puppy, a gift from his dead wife. This leads Wick to rekindle his dark side in a big way, and with his well honed skill and precision as a killing machine he goes after Iosef, meaning that his former boss has to call on his minions to kill Wick first. Directed by veteran stuntman Charles F. Stahelski, who doubled Reeves in The Matrix, and co-directed by David Leitch, the fight scenes, which constitute the bulk of the action, are spectacular. And despite the violent nature of the film, there’s an amusing element of comedy around the edges. This is especially noticeable when Wick checks into a hotel that caters to professional killers. The notion of a killer hotel is hilarious, especially with Lance Reddick (Fringe, The Wire) as the hotel manager who has a special gift for dealing with this particular brand of clientele. The hotel setting gives John Wick a connection to John Boorman’s 1967 Point Blank starring Lee Marvin, and therefore to the unofficial 1999 remake, Payback starring Mel Gibson, which feature the criminal organization working out of an office like civil businessmen, except with guns instead of briefcases. The connection is further solidified by the need for vengeance by the main protagonist and the audience’s need to see him find that justice. You can’t kill a sweet little dog and get away with it, even it if means leaving a string of corpses along the way. John Wick is a classic revenge-fueled action pick with the classy Reeves giving it more heft than perhaps it deserves. What can we say — Americans do love their pets. ★★★
