n important piece of Atlantic City’s past is sitting along the East River in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, waiting for an executioner’s axe to fall. It’s the set of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. And before it meets an inglorious end — movie and TV sets are often dismantled, repurposed or destroyed once they’ve outlived their usefulness — the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and the Atlantic City Alliance need to grab it, provided it’s not already too late. It’s been several months since HBO filmed the series’ brutal final scene. The lights and cameras have long since been packed away. The actors and writers and production crew have moved on to other projects. The cable network that created the 56 episodes, which debuted in 2010, is now re-airing the eight shows of the fifth and final season of a show inspired by part of one chapter from author Nelson Johnson’s nonfictional tome about Atlantic City and its tawdry history of political corruption. Yet there’s one character still lingering on the Boardwalk Empire set. Next to Nucky, it may have been the most important character in the entire series. That character is the set itself.

HBO spent $20 million to shoot the show’s pilot episode, which was directed by Hollywood heavyweight Martin Scorsese, who was one of the series’ seven executive producers. One-quarter of the pilot’s budget — $5 million — went into the creation of the historically accurate set. Walking onto the Boardwalk Empire set was like stepping 90 years into Atlantic City’s past. Thanks to local historians Ed McGinty, Jr. and Vicki Gold Levi, who served as consultants to the series from start to finish, very few liberties were taken in creating of the set, which is 300 feet long — the length of a football field — and was the largest movie or TV set ever built in New York City. Purists will point out that some of the businesses depicted on the set were not positioned as they were in the 1920s. And yes, we know that Babette’s nightclub wasn’t really on the Boardwalk at all; it was on Pacific Avenue where the now defunct Trump Plaza stands. But the look of the set really was authentic to the period, right down to the herringbone pattern of the boards and the knuckled metal joints that connected the Boardwalk railings. In 2011, Curtain Call was fortunate to be one of the few CONTINUED ON PAGE

adies, it’s about that time to leave the guys glued to the tube watching Thursday Night Football while you hit the Milton & Betty Katz JCC. The JCC Early Childhood Education Center Parent Committee is bringing back its successful bi-annual Ladies Night Out Shopping Extravaganza on Nov. 13 from 6-9pm in the Katz JCC auditorium, 501 N. Jerome Avenue in Margate. Guests will enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and live music while perusing more than 50 vendors, and enjoying a 20-minute fashion that brings to Margate the fashions of Paris, New York and Madrid. “The money raised from this event will further fund a community playground for the Katz JCC Early Childhood Center, says event chairwoman Laurie Staller. “It will add to the already great facility here at the JCC and provide a modern outdoor environment that encourages gross motor development. To date, the Ladies Night Out events have raised close to $13,000 of the $48,000 needed for the new playground. Tickets for the event are $20 per person in advance and $30 at the door, and include one drink ticket. ow through Friday, Nov. 21, the Atlantic Medical Imaging Foundation is holding its Sixth Annual Food Drive to benefit the Food Bank of Southern New Jersey and the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean counties. Donations of canned goods and other non-perishable food items are needed at any of the five AMI offices in Atlantic County, or those in Cape May, Monmouth or Ocean counties. A collection bin will be placed at all office locations. For a list of office locations, go to atlanticmedicalimaging.com.

“This is another way for us to give something back to the communities we serve, says Dr. Robert Glassberg, president/CEO of AMI. “The programs, services and partnerships undertaken by the foundation are designed to enhance the quality of life and improve the health status of community residents, and we believe this food drive is consistent with that mission and that vision. The AMI Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to enhancing the level of healthcare for community residents in need, collaborating with local community groups to support programs that address critical health issues. Since its inception in 2003, the Foundation has provided approximately $1 million to various charitable organizations throughout South Jersey and central New Jersey. Registration starts 8am at the Ocean City Civic Center (6th Street and the Ocean City Boardwalk), and the race starts 10am. Registration is $30 and all participants receive a T-shirt. There will be awards given for several age categories. Studies have show that about 240,000 cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed this year, and of that figure 60,000 will die. “Eighty percent of those diagnosed are non-smokers or have never smoked, says Jamila Glapion of the Somers Point-based Every Breath Counts Foundation. “We need to erase the stigma that lung cancer is just a smoker’s cancer, and let people know that it affects everybody. It’s environmental, it’s radon in their homes, it’s particulate matter in the air, the water that we drink, the air that we breathe — it’s not just smoke. Visit everybreathcounts.net or call 609.839.2283 for more — R.S.

Avicii, Laidback Luke, Nervo, David Guetta and others. As a producer, MAKJ has released a slew of hit tracks including three Beatport Top 10 hits in 2013 — a collaboration with Hardwell (“Countdown”) that rose to No. 1 on Beatport after just three days, and two releases on the Bingo Players’ Hysteria Records (“Springen” and “Encore”). Collaborations with genre megastars MC Lil Jon and Bassjackers took him on a worldwide tour that traversed Europe and Asia in 2014, and he wraps up this year at the Sunburn Festival in Goa, India, on Dec. 29. Tag-teaming the mur.mur Monday gig is New York City native Peter Conigliaro, aka DJ PS 1, a Borgata resident DJ who can also claim residencies at Avenue nightclub in the famed NYC Meatpacking District, The Estate in Boston, and Shrine nightclub at MGM Foxwoods casino in Connecticut. One of the latest EDM upstarts will make his way to mur.mur at Borgata for the nightclub’s popular industry night party on Monday, Nov. 10. American-born DJ MAKJ (real name Mackenzie Johnson) first gained international exposure to diversified musical styles through racecar driving. He began as a standout go-cart racer as a child, wound up racing professionally as a teen in China, then migrated back to the central coast of California after having honed an appreciation for the international EDM nightlife scene. MAKJ was fortunate to have befriended the late Philadelphia-born legend DJ AM, whose guidance helped him become highly sought-after at many of the most prominent music festivals and nightclubs around the world. He’s been hailed as one of the next rising stars on the EDM circuit, and his original tracks, edits, bootlegs and remixes have received glowing endorsements from such renowned artists as Tiesto, Afrojack,

STAIND WHEN HE WANTS TO BE FRONTMAN A ARON LEWIS IS BACK WITH HIS BAND THIS GO AROUND BY ED CO N D R A N

O

ur national anthem is one tough song to nail down. Just ask Christina Aguilera, Michael Bolton and Scott Stapp. And then add Aaron Lewis to that list: The Staind singer had some issues singing “The Star-Spangled Banner prior to game five of the World Series last month in San Francisco. But count on Lewis, 42, to bounce back when Staind appears Saturday at the Tropicana Showroom. The Atlantic City gig won’t require any particular demonstrations of oddlyrhythmed patriotism, which means Lewis’s crew is expecting to stick to the deep Staind canon. Staind, which has recorded such hits as “It’s Been Awhile, “Right Here and “Tangled Up In You, has been one of the postgrunge era’s most consistent rock bands ever since emerging from Springfield, Massachusetts during the late ‘90s. The band has recorded seven studio albums and sold more than 15 million albums. “I’m just ecstatic that I get to make music for a living, Lewis said. “I was just a kid who grew up on Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and I get to play live. It’s incredible. Speaking of live, Staind’s last release, Live From Mohegan Sun,

is a solid concert document — though recording a live album at a casino is a bit of an anomaly for rockers. “I’ve always enjoyed playing casinos,â€? Lewis said. “Why wouldn’t I like it? They treat you right.â€? (In fact, Lewis recently helped open the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Sioux City, Iowa; he threw out the ceremonial first dice roll at the casino.) There’s been a bit of a gap in Staind’s release schedule, since Lewis put out a couple of solo records in 2011 and 2012. The latter album, The Road, was a critical and commercial success. “I loved how well it went over, since some people are narrowminded about what you can do as a singer-songwriter,â€? he says. “I know people said that I’m not country, but I come from an area [of Massachusetts] that’s more country than people know. I come from a really rural area. When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time with my grandfather, who was a big country fan. I listened to a lot of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard — and to me, music is music. People get weird about it, and that’s sad. It doesn’t matter whether it’s country or rock with me; I love them both. I love going out there by myself and going out with Staind.â€? After all: “I would rather be working than not working.â€? â–

ete Rose will be flying from one casino city to another when he treks from Las Vegas to Atlantic City for his “An Evening With” event Thursday at Harrah’s Re-

sort. Baseball fans routinely line up to bow at the altar of the man they call Charlie Hustle, who appears regularly in Vegas to sign autographs and pose for photos. But it’ll be a special night in A.C. when Rose fields questions from the crowd, as opposed to ground balls. “These kind of events are usually relaxing and fun for me,” Rose tells Atlantic City Weekly by phone from Vegas. “I love taking questions from fans. The fans in [South Jersey] are generally very knowledgable when it comes to baseball; it’s always fun to come back, since there are a lot of fans there who love the 1980 Phillies. I’ll be happy to answer any questions about that experience — I had a tremendous time playing for the Phillies, particularly when we won that World Series.” Many pundits and fans believe Rose was the final catalyst that sparked that very talented team’s success, as the Phils simply could not reach that upper echelon until Rose was signed going into the 1979 season. “I didn’t do anything differently when I played for Philadelphia,” he says. “What I did was make Mike Schmidt a better player. He didn’t have to just be the best player two or four days a week; my message was that he could be the best player seven days a week, and he became that player. He reached another level, and I think I had something to do with it. My first year there in ‘79, we didn’t win, but I had a great year — and the following year, everything came together.” Indeed; the Phillies had gone the better part of a century without winning a championship before then. Rose’s driven work ethic was a huge part of the reason; he wasn’t dubbed “Charlie Hustle” for nothing. “You don’t see many players go all out like Pete Rose did,” Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon says. “You have some guys who respect the 90 feet to first base like Pete did, like Derek Jeter and Chase Utley. But Rose was a different animal.” Always diving headfirst, dirtying his uniform every game, Rose was exactly the kind of player South Jersey and Philadelphia sports fans admire most. “I gave it all every game,” he says simply. “I didn’t know how to do it any other way. If you do it another way, you’re cheating the fans.” Today, the legend is enjoying watching the game and the young crop of stars. “The game is the same today as it was when I played it, and it’s a great game,” Rose said. “Look at the playoffs and World Series the Giants won: Baseball is in great shape. But the difference between when I played and

now is that guys are making more money today playing. The other thing is that we were more interested in putting the ball in play with two strikes on us. We were more fundamentally sound.” So why aren’t contemporary players down with the basics? “There are so many teams, so players don’t spend enough time in the minors,” Rose says. “You can’t learn the game on the major league level. On-the-job training is not going to work in major league baseball.” That said, he’s certain he would fit right in if he were a youngster trying to crack the MLB ranks today. “I would be fine,” he says. “I would play the same way I played my last year and all the other years. Hitters are hitters and pitchers are pitchers. My philosophy worked when I played, and it would work today.” Still, Rose, who has the most hits in the history of the game (4,256), the most singles (3,215) and games played (3,562), is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame; he agreed to permanent ineligibility from baseball after being accused of

betting on games while playing and managing the Cincinnati Reds. Might that change? With Rob Manfred succeeding Bud Selig as commissioner, is there a chance Rose will become a HOF candidate? “I don’t think that’s going to happen,” he says. “I just don’t see it.” But America is a land of redemption. Just ask athletes who’ve come back after falling to their nadir — like Jets starting quarterback Michael Vick. “There are all different cases out there,” Rose grants. “I’m not worried about anyone else’s case, just my case. But America is a great country which will give you a second chance. I’m just waiting for my second chance.” ■

AN EVENING WITH PETE ROSE Thursday, Nov. 13. 8pm. Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City, 777 Harrah’s Blvd., A.C. Tickets: $19.99. More information: 609-441-5786

but he seems undaunted. “I go into the ring, and I get my victory at any cost,” he says. “If I need to fight, I will fight. If I need to box, I’m going to box. This is a fight. You can keep in your mind one strategy, but these fighters can change. I don’t have any strategy for the fight — just to go into the ring and fight like a street fight. I’m going to kick his ass, because he’s my opponent.” Hopkins gets where Kovalev is coming from “Having no strategy is a strategy,” Hopkins says. “Kovalev feeds off of what you do and how you react to him. If you’re scared, he’s going to get brave. If you’re not, he’s got to sharpen up and get his stuff together. Some fighters are like that. I’m not. I’ve been around so long, I can read these guys without even them speaking their mind — I understand just by their fighting style how they think and what they’re thinking about. Your reaction is how he reacts.” Without question, both fighters are eager to prove themselves the better man. Logic would say that youth and power are attributes that often prove too much for a fighter Hopkins’s age to overcome. Then again, unlike fighters like

Evander Holyfield, Muhammad Ali and so many more who tried to stick around well past that conversation with Father Time, to date, Hopkins has simply never fought like a man who turns 50 years old in January. On Saturday night, will there be a brutal changing of the guard — or another night proving the critics wrong? Either way, history will be made at Boardwalk Hall. ■

HOPKINS VS. KOVALEV Brought to you by GoldenBoy Promotion and Main Events in association with Caesars Atlantic City. Scheduled 12-round unification for Hopkins’ IBF/WBA light heavyweight titles, along with Kovalev’s WBO belt. Saturday, Nov. 8. Boardwalk Hall. Main Event will be broadcast shown on HBO’s World Championship Boxing at 10:45pm. Tickets: $50–$300. More info: Boardwalk Hall box office, 800.736.1420 or ticketmaster.com

oxing has often been known as a young man’s sport. It’s a sport where the old saying, “What goes up must come down,” carries a much more dangerous and emphatic meaning. In other sports, the reality of getting older and not being what you once were is something that leaves a competitor’s feelings hurt — but in the boxing ring, one’s decline could, should fate take a bad turn, literally lead to an athlete’s demise. It’s a danger zone in which Mother Nature allows the gifted and dedicated to excel, but even the successful fighter inevitably has to have that tough-love conversation with Father Time when the message comes in that it’s time to call it quits. Then there’s Philadelphia’s own WBA/IBF light heavyweight champion, Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 knockouts), who’s defied the odds on so many different occasions that the boxing community is beginning to lose count. On Saturday, Nov. 8, the 49-years-young Hopkins is looking to extend his streak of accomplishments when he takes on Russian-born WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs), in a highly anticipated scheduled 12-round unification match-up live from Boardwalk Hall. It’s quite a matchup. Pound for pound, Kovalev is one of the hardest hitters in the sport — while the elder Hopkins is one of the cagiest fighters in the history of the ring. We last saw Sergey Kovalev in Atlantic City this past August headlining the last boxing show at Revel, where he ended Australian contender Blake Caparello’s title bid with a second-round TKO. The challenger was dropped three times in the round, forcing the referee to call for a stoppage. It was a performance that underlined the power that’s made Kovalev such a feared fighter in his division. His road has literally been long, but the WBO champ is savoring this opportunity. “I waited a long time at this level,” Kovalev says, “waited for this fight, a huge fight. When I was a child, I had a dream — I watched TV and I had a dream. I wanted to be there. I wanted to be there, and I [told myself] ‘I will try to be there’ — and I’m here! Everything from your head and everything from your heart — if you want it, you can do it.” If that lifelong hunger in itself wasn’t enough motivation for Kovalev, he’s now the proud father of a newborn son. It’s an addition to his life that’s brought even more clarity to his journey. “Now I understand who I’m doing everything in my career for,” he says. “I’m doing it now not for me. I’m doing this for my family.” For Kovalev, it’s his first time being on a stage this big —

iddle me this: what begins preparation in June, ends in November, involves several hundred staff and will eventually deliver extraordinary, world-class cuisine and beverages in seemingly limitless quantities for 1,200 or so guests? If your answer was the 2014 edition of Savor Borgata’s Street Eats on Saturday, Nov. 8, you would be correct. Beyond merely showcasing the property’s high-profile cadre of chefs — names like Puck, Zakarian, Flay, Kalt, DiBona and Schulson (see sidebar) — Savor Borgata, in its sixth official campaign, has blossomed into a week’s worth of dining specials culminating in a weekend full of epicurean events. Borgata’s point person for all things Savor, executive chef Tom Biglan, granted us an exclusive, behind-the-scenes glimpse at what is required to manage a spectacle of this magnitude. Wandering through a labyrinth of hallways en route to his production kitchen, Biglan said that Savor’s planning process actually began with himself, senior vice president of operations Joe Lupo, vice president of food and beverage Becky Schultz and other Borgata staffers, five months prior. Asked about the overriding philosophy behind the special culinary weekend, Biglan stated enthusiastically “We try to outdo each other. We try to outdo ourselves. It’s all fun. While most of Savor’s planned happenings were sold out prior to press time, Biglan’s personal wild ride, the beyondadventurous “Extreme Cuisine dinner on Friday at 7:30pm in sister property the Water Club’s Aqua remained, perhaps surprisingly, available. Presenting a most daring and imaginative bill of fare, it’s the kind of elevated, exalted dining that hard-core food folk should truly relish, if you’ll pardon the pun. Among the culinary oddities planned are passed hors d’oeuvres of “Bang Bang alligator with sriracha aioli, Vietnamese-style pig’s ear summer roll sided with roasted cashew sauce, and Rocky Mountain oysters tempura. Three of six composed plates offer rattlesnake Wellington with tomato essence and a smoke cloud, braised pork cheek with

hoisin jam or Chinese-style braised duck tongues with sweet chili soy sauce. A chef-attended carving station plans veal sweetbread and bear heart tacos, accompanied by a nopales (cactus) and tomato salsa, avocado, agave mayo, green chile/ tomatillo salsa and ancho chile sauce, or a second option, slow-roasted lobe of fois gras with roasted fall fruits, assorted salts, house-made pickles and brioche toast. One of Biglan’s 10 proprietary stations further authors our single most captivating Street Eats dish; Canadian Poutine, traditional french-fry oriented, post-pubbing grub north of the border. Two other events remained available at press time; a Johnny Walker Scotch Dinner at Old Homestead — still A.C.’s premier steakhouse, in our opinion — on Friday night, and Geoffrey Zakarian’s culinary demo Saturday afternoon at The Music Box. For a city beset by plenty of less-than-encouraging news lately, Savor Borgata is a most welcome respite, reiterating the critical importance of culinary tourism locally. Street Eats takes its name from the mass popularity of urban food trucks so prevalent throughout much of metropolitan America. Here’s a sampling of what you’ll find this year. â–

television shows invited to shoot on that set. When we sat down with Boardwalk Empire creator and executive producer Terence Winter, he said the set was as much a character as any of the actors in the series. Winter said his prop master placed tiny trinkets in the window of a Boardwalk variety store, items so small the cameras would never see them. He explained the painstaking attention to detail inspired the actors into believing they really were in Atlantic City during the prohibition years. I’m well aware that Atlantic City’s forward-thinking marketing team prefers to focus on Atlantic City’s future, not dwell in the past. I agree with that approach. It’s awfully hard to attract today’s millennials and turn them into tomorrow’s recreational gamblers if all you’re doing is wallowing in the past. But bringing the Boardwalk Empire set to the actual Boardwalk that inspired the show wouldn’t just be a trip down Memory Lane. It could become one of the many non-gaming attractions the city so desperately needs. Imagine part of the set serving as the main entrance to the Atlantic City Historical Museum on Garden Pier. How about ridding the Boardwalk of some schlocky “souvenir” stores — you know, the ones that sell donkey-imprinted T-shirts with the message “I lost my ass in Atlantic City” — and replacing them with more tourist-friendly businesses or restaurants, and then us-

ing the Boardwalk Empire sets as the facades for those places? And wouldn’t it be cool to find a spot on the Boardwalk for the storefront that accurately depicted one of Atlantic City’s most unusual attractions — the incubator baby exhibit? Several years ago, Pinky Kravitz used his leverage as Atlantic City’s biggest cheerleader (and, at times, its most vocal critic) to persuade an outdoor advertising company to create a mural of the Boardwalk Empire set. It’s become a popular place for people to take pictures of the “old” Atlantic City. But now there may be an opportunity to grab the actual sets from the TV series and find them a permanent home, sort of like putting them back where they came from 90 years ago. Two years ago, the Atlantic City Alliance spent millions to dump dirt on a former casino site, stick on some lighted signs with words like “passion” and “imagine,” and called it art. Surely it can find the money — maybe with some CRDA help — and bring the Boardwalk Empire set home where it belongs. ■

Watch the Emmy-winning Curtain Call with David Spatz Saturdays at 1am directly following Saturday Night Live on WMGM-TV NBC40.
