USHER IN A NEW AGE? THREE FUTURES THAT, ONCE , NOBODY WOULD HAVE IMAGINED

H

ere is what’s scariest about life: You never know what’s going to happen next. And here is what’s most exciting about life: You never know what’s going to happen next. The future is weird. We call it “the future, as if it were a single thing — but it’s not. It’s an ever-changing cloud of maybes and what-ifs and who-knews that only becomes real when it stops being the future and turns into the present. And when it does, it often confounds our expectations in ways startling, unsettling and, sometimes, delightful. Several unlikely futures are in view here in front of us at the moment — all over the cultural map.

1

Usher Raymond, epic superstar. Today, Usher is one of the biggest pop music stars alive. The show he’ll play at Boardwalk Hall on Saturday, Nov. 15 is a theatrical extravaganza to rival anything Michael Jackson ever brought to Madison Square Garden. For God’s sake, his latest single, “Clueless, is being distributed right now as a download code inside boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios. That is some crazy stuff for a guy whose early days involved costarring in The Faculty, a cheesy 1990s horror movie about

an alien invasion of a high school that also co-starred Jon Stewart as a sinister science teacher.

2

Atlantic City, university town.

Folks rolled their eyes a few weeks back when one of the bidders for the bankrupt Revel proposed to launch a university on the Boardwalk. But nobody’s laughing now, as the news breaks this week that Richard Stockton College intends to buy the Showboat building and open an A.C. branch campus there. What does that mean for the city’s long-term prospects? We don’t know for certain yet — but we do know it opens up a host of exciting possibilities that far outshine the empty building we were looking at yesterday.

3

All the information, in our pockets.

When I was growing up, I had to cross my fingers every week and hope that anything cool happening around South Jersey would be in the newspaper in time for me to find out about it — but there were only so many pages the papers had to spare. Now? Now we can go online to, for example, acweekly.com, and find an infinitude of awesomeness to partake in every single day. â–

MUSICAL MUSINGS 3-MINUTE SONGS & HALL OF FAME BROADCASTERS

O

nce again, greetings and salutations. Just got off the ship, and wow, what a cruise! The Malt Shop Memories folks did it again — and a special thank you for the folks from the Golden Nugget, who shared sponsorship. Yes, all of the artists were phenomenal, and folks from all over the world loved the memories. We’ll do it again next year with the sixth annual Malt Shop Memories Cruise departing from Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 1, 2015, and sailing to the Bahamas, Aruba, and Curacao. Hope you can join us. For more info, go maltshopcruise.com or call (844) 855-MALT. Now, let’s ask the Geator. I’m on the final pages of You Only Rock Once. It’s been fascinating. As a New York radio fan, I am curious: Did you ever have regular contact with Cousin Brucie in the day, especially when Palisades Park was up? Also didn’t see much mention of Clay Cole in your book. I would have thought you guys might have been a bit closer being record promoters via television. (Jim E., Mullica Hills, N.J.) — I was never a record promoter, but Clay and I had similar TV shows and he even consulted me for his book, Sh-Boom, which came out just before he passed in 2010. I loved Clay and love the work that Cousin Brucie does. Unfortunately, even though we met several times, being out of the Philly-Jersey area and working constantly, I never got too much time to hang out with them in New York. Last time I saw Bruce Morrow was when we were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. I listen to your shows all the time from the Cape May area and always feel young again while listening. I’m hoping you may be able to answer a rock question that has been nagging me for years. In the summer of 1961 there was a song that received quite a bit of

air play from the New York AM stations. It paid tribute to all the girls who did not have a song named after them. The chorus includes the lyrics “So I made myself a special list of all the girls that they have missed‌â€? then follows a list of names, one of which is Vicki. (Joseph Brower, Brick Township, N.J.) — Sounds to me like a novelty song which, as you said, might have been played only locally and never got national play. Wish I could help but I don’t recall the song. If any of our readers can identify it, write to us at askthegeator@ acweekly.com and we’ll post it here. What is the reasoning behind most recorded songs only having a playing time of three minutes or so? It never deviated from that time except maybe a few long Beatles songs and “MacArthur Park.â€? (Karen Ross, Blue Bell, Pa.) — It started with 78 RPM records, which could only hold three minutes worth of music per side. Songwriters began to tailor their compositions to that length, and the two- or three-minute side became standard practice. It also lent itself to radio, which before FM came in was very commercialized, because it allowed a radio station to throw in frequent station breaks between songs. Discophonic Scene tees — still in stock? (Eddie Bowman, Philadelphia) — I haven’t seen any, but I will check with my old friend Herb Spivak, who was very much involved with creating T-shirts from that era, which included the Discophonic Scene tee. â– Got a question for Jerry? Write AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. More info on Jerry’s appearances is at www.geator.net. Keep on rocking, ’cause you only rock once!

JIM BREUER FINDS HUMOR EVERY WHERE IN LIFE EVEN AMID TR AGEDY BY DAVID J. SPATZ

they’re still here. If it still affects my life, I talk about it.” Sooner or later, Breuer will likely dish out stories about the times he took his dad on tour with him even after he’d been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. One tour even became the subject of a documentary, More Than Me, which showed Breuer taking care of his father while they were on the road. Breuer was back on the road not long after his father’s funeral. Like many comedians, the stage becomes a cathartic outlet for emotions. Prior to a Las Vegas gig just a week after his father’s death, Breuer remembered some of the more priceless moments when he was on tour with his dad. “He was a terror on the road,” Breuer told the Las Vegas Review Journal. “I’d come off the stage, like, ‘Where’s my father?’ They’d say, ‘Oh, the wait staff took him to the bar across the street.’ I’d go across the street. There’d be a crowd. He’d be holding court for hours.” But there came a time when his father’s illness became too much for him to handle when he was touring. Sadly, he had to leave his dad at home when he went to work. It ate Breuer alive. “Every time I went on the road, I was tormented and

tortured. I’d go to my [hotel] room and sob, ‘Am I doing the right thing? Should I be with him? Does he have good care?’” he said. “My biggest sobs and crying sessions — I mean, primal-scream cries — were the last seven to 10 years leading up to the moment [of his death].” Several weeks before Jim Breuer Sr. died, he suffered a major stroke. It became clear to his son that the end was close. Breuer made sure his father didn’t die alone. Surrounded by his daughter-in-law and three granddaughters, Jim Breuer Sr. was gathered into the loving arms of his son and took his final breath. “All my fears of that moment were now gone,” Breuer told the Review Journal. “Everything I hoped for and wished for, happened. I held him. He wasn’t alone. I made him laugh. I couldn’t ask for anything better." ■

JIM BREUER Friday, Nov. 14. 9pm. Music Box at the Borgata, 1 Borgata Way, A.C. Tickets: $35-$39.50. More info: 609.317.1000. theborgata.com

Jim Breuer and Frank Caliendo aren’t the only top headliners in town this

week: Carlos Mencia performs Saturday at the Tropicana. The former Mind of Mencia star built a rep during his Comedy Central show’s three seasons as an edgy jokester who doesn’t care what anyone thinks — not the audience, not corporations, and not any comedy rivals who might find him objectionable. Don’t be surprised to see Mencia on the casino floor, trying his luck at table games; the last time he was in A.C., gamblers at the Trop spotted him giving it his best shot. — ED CONDRAN Saturday, Nov. 15. 8pm. Tropicana Showroom, 2831 Boardwalk, A.C. Tickets: $35–$55. More info: 800-THE-TROP. tropicana.net

omedians have been known to occasionally tease their colleagues by shouting out “Too soon!” when one of them crosses the line separating good comedy from bad taste. The expression is often heard when someone tries to mine comedy too soon after a tragedy. So it’s still “too soon” for Jim Breuer to find anything funny about the deaths of his 91-year-old father in late August and his older sister’s passing from a fast-spreading form of cancer just six weeks later. Breuer was prepared to lose his father. He’d known that day was coming for about 10 years, ever since his dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and moved in with Breuer, his wife and their three daughters. “I’ve got all the (material) I need at home, I don’t have to look anywhere else,” he once said, joking about living with his wife, three young girls and an elderly parent suffering from dementia. He also knew his sister was in bad shape from the grueling radiation and chemotherapy sessions, and it’s way too soon to even think about developing shtick based on his sister’s suffering. The topics will probably, someday, become chunks of his stand-up act. But not just yet, he told the Boston Globe last week. “I like hitting subjects like that, that are raw, truthful, and finding the funny in it,” he said. “There’s always a little healing element.” Ever since he broke away from Saturday Night Live in 1998 after a three-season run that put him on the comedy map, Breuer — who headlines Friday night in Borgata’s Music Box — has developed a reputation as a storyteller rather than a conventional set-up-punchline-laugh performer. In a bow to his SNL roots, Breuer will probably offer up his trademark character Goat Boy. And don’t be surprised to hear a few snippets of his Joe Pesci impression, which is so accurate that Pesci has said when he hears Breuer’s impression, even he sometimes doesn’t know whose voice he’s hearing. But it’s the way he’s evolved into a storytelling comedian that’s defined Breuer in recent years. In some respects, he can be compared to Bill Cosby, who often spends 90 minutes on stage and only covers a few topics because of how well he weaves comedy out of the subject matter. Breuer will sometimes get personal on stage and open up about events in his life, especially if he can find a funny way to present an otherwise serious situation. That’s why he knows he’ll eventually get around to talking about his dad and his sister. “Anything family or close-related, I talk about,” he told the Globe. “It doesn’t matter if they’ve passed away or

eland Melvin is your hero. Oh, sure, you’ve never heard of him before. But we’re going to fix that now. Because Leland Melvin is one of a tiny handful of American heroes whose life can inspire everybody. Let’s start with the central fact: He’s an astronaut — a NASA veteran who logged 565 hours on the space shuttle Atlantis while working on the construction of the International Space Station. In the half a century since human beings have begun escaping the pull of Earth’s gravity, there have only been some 500 space travelers out of the more than 7,000,000,000 of us who currently live on this rock. That alone makes Leland Melvin a onein-fourteen-million kinda guy. Now let’s kick it up a notch: Only one person in the history of the United States of America has ever been an NFL draftee before flying into space. Yes, while Leland Melvin was studying chemistry as an undergrad at the University of Richmond, he was also busy being an NCAA Division I Academic All American football star. The Detroit Lions chose him in the 1986 draft — but a hamstring injury sent him back to his life as a research scientist, and soon NASA hired him to study fiber-optic sensors before accepting him into the astronaut program. So, if you’re keeping score: 1. Space explorer. 2. Foot-

ball star. 3. Cutting-edge high-tech engineer. And finally, let’s add 4. Artist. Because Leland Melvin is also a fine-art photographer who’s turned his careful eye to crafting some of the most beautiful pictures of the natural world you’ll ever see — both here on earth, and from his unique vantage point orbiting the planet. Basically, his life is a Marvel superhero’s origin story. So it’s no surprise that, during the four years he served as NASA’s education chief, he became one of those who thinks American education’s obsession with what’s called STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — really ought to be called STEAM and include the arts in its vision of a well-developed mind, too. If you’ve ever wanted to be awesome at anything, he is in your corner. Leland Melvin will step onstage at Harrah’s this week to talk about his adventures. Have you bought your ticket yet? ■

he wisest people don’t swim upstream when it comes to careers. Frank Caliendo is one of those folks who’s taken his greatest gift and run with it. A master impressionist, the unpredictable performer dazzles audiences with spot-on impersonations of Morgan Freeman, Charles Barkley and a myriad of other luminaries. “It’s just something that I discovered I had,” Caliendo says. “When I was a kid going to school I impersonated teachers and also had their mannerisms down as well. I didn’t know it would lead to what I would do for a living but it all started there.” Caliendo, who will perform Saturday at the Borgata, is just as good at replicating movements as voices. His recent impression of Monday Night Football announcer Jon Gruden, for instance, is eerily similar. “It gets really interesting when I do these people who are easily identifiable,” he says. Take another NFL celebrity: “Audiences love when I do John Madden.” And yet that iconic broadcaster/coach has never been crazy about the homage. “I think that has something to do with me calling Madden ‘Shrek’ years ago,” Caliendo muses. “I don’t get it, since Shrek is such a lovable character.” As good as his likenesses are, it’s Caliendo’s razor sharp wit and unpredictability that separate him from the impressionist pack. ”The difference between myself and others who do impressions is that I write an act,” he says. “There are people who do better voices than me — but they have nothing to say. They’ll say something like, “What if Christopher Walken was your neighbor?’ Give me a reason why Christopher Walken would be my neighbor! That weak stuff drives me nuts.” Who are the most difficult impressions for Caliendo? “All of the ones I can’t do,” he cracks. Once, the performer says, he considered becoming a relatively conventional comic. “I once wanted to be a comedian like Steven Wright,” he remembers. “I told Steven Wright that. I wrote a joke like one of his: ‘I built an addition to my house, completely out of mirrors. The walls are made out of mirrors, even the furniture is made out of mirrors. I go in there when I want to reflect on things.’” Wright never heard the joke, but Caliendo did meet him. “He came up to me backstage at David Letterman and said, ‘Aren’t you the guy who does Madden?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘I love you,’ and he was smiling. Now that’s validation.” ■

otel restaurants are a complicated subspecies of the culinary universe. Never easy to pull off, these ventures often find themselves subject to vicissitudes of multiple masters: serving the facility’s visitors, hosting special events and meeting needs of the general dining public. But if what we witnessed during a chockablock Friday evening at Stone Harbor’s Sax at The Reeds of Shelter Haven serves as any indication, this newish boutique hotel — celebrating a paper anniversary — is doing all rather well. Seated smoothly as staffers rearranged the dining room in the wake of a just-concluded wedding, we were elated to learn a freshly minted autumn menu would be debuting this evening. We chose a seasonal salad: frilly frisee adorned by pomegranate, sliced apple, candied walnuts and a glorious, crowning toss of regal Roquefort. Healthful and invigorating, this deep bowl was also a value at only $10. Our other starter, fried calamari, turned out to be one of the region’s most remarkable variations. Large squid rings were perched atop pickled peppers, mandoline-cut Vidalia onions and a finishing hint of mizuna — a vibrant, pointy-leaf green rarely seen locally. My main course, short rib Bourguignon, presented that

trendy cut of meat in classic French format. Lovingly braised in red wine, the beef developed a rich unctuousness and amazingly tender texture. Tiny, explosively sweet caramelized Tokyo turnips and horseradish pommes puree filled out the plating. A second entrÊe, Skuna Bay salmon sourced from Vancouver Island’s pristine waters, arrived skin side up. Crisped on that exterior but medium within, the pink flesh was juicy and luxurious. Accompanied by Romesco potatoes — creamy mash with amazing, orangey Catalan Spanish sauce, based on red peppers and nuts — rock shrimp salpicon and baby bok choy, this was a indeed a globetrotting composition. Lovers of sweets will not be disappointed; choices are worldly and magically complex. My chocolate hazelnut tart with dark chocolate ganache included salted caramel, toasted nuts and a dollop of chocolate Chantilly cream. And pear clafoutis, another French preparation, was composed of a spiced pear cake with oat streusel, vanilla Anglaise, cinnamon tuile and exotic cardamom ice cream. — FRANK GABRIEL

Once in space, Nolan unleashes his spectacular visuals with a nod to 2001 in the form of several likable robots with a wiseass attitude, and the team’s ride into the wormhole is reminiscent of Contact, which also featured McConaughey. The prospective new homes for the human race are fraught with peril — including super-giant waves on a water world and frigid conditions on another planet. Along the way, we explore inner space, too, as several moments remind us humans are capable of extreme treachery as well as heroism. All this is brilliantly realized with a breathtaking combination of the remarkable visual feast, enhanced by the IMAX presentation, and the emotional fire that lives within McConaughey’s compelling performance. What an amazing couple of years it has been for McConaughey, from his Oscar-winning performance in The Dallas Buyers Club to his acclaimed work on the HBO series True Detective. Oscar might be calling again for his work in Interstellar as a real superhero who represents what being human is all about. The rest of the cast is also ex-

cellent — particularly Hathaway’s Dr. Brand, who’s asked to be controlled and logical in contrast to Coop’s passion. The cast is loaded with superb actors even in small roles, including John Lithgow, Chastain, Casey Affleck, Topher Grace and a couple of big-name surprises along the way. Christopher Nolan reminds us every time he has an idea for a movie that visionaries still live among the more typical parade of lesser talents and money-stealing hacks. Interstellar is the best film yet from a filmmaker who always delivers intelligence and passion. ■

hristopher Nolan is an event filmmaker, a man with a singular cinematic vision who can straddle both the bombast of Hollywood tentpole-land and the invigorating and intelligent cinematic mindset of the indie film world. Therefore, proclaiming his sci-fi masterwork Interstellar as his finest achievement to date puts it in the same category as 2001: A Space Odyssey right now, without the usual waiting period for declaring that a film has historic significance. Interstellar is a visual feast that explores the universe; it’s also an intimate drama that explores why love and devotion are qualities that make the human race worth saving. The key to this achievement is a remarkable performance by Matthew McConaughey, who has reignited his passion for acting in a remarkable comeback the last several years, and in whom Nolan has found the perfect muse. Interstellar, written by the director and his brother Jonathan Nolan, begins as an indie drama about a family trying to survive on an Earth that’s turned against them. This isn’t about a plague or nuclear war decimating the planet; it is literally about the earth, the dirt, which can no longer provide enough food after drought and famine have taken their toll. The Cooper family, led by former astronaut McConaughey and his beloved daughter Murf (Mackenzie Foy as a child, Jessica Chastain as an adult), are fighting for survival in the face of frequent and violent dust storms that tear across the landscape. The earth is a few decades away from being a barren rock that can no longer sustain life; a new home must be found if the human race is to survive. This brings us to phase two of Interstellar: finding that new home. What’s left of NASA’s engineers and scientists have been secretly searching, and it turns out a wormhole in our solar system offers a long-shot chance to travel to distant space. Dr. Brand (Nolan regular Michael Caine) recruits Coop to lead a desperate charge into the abyss of space to save the world — leaving his family behind in hopes of saving them. Brand’s engineer daughter Dr. Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway) is also part of the crew.
