ell, it’s Thanksgiving, and you know what that means: The Christmas decorations are coming out. Plenty of large-scale tree illuminations are rolling out all across South Jersey this week, starting at this past Monday’s holiday tree-lighting countdown at the Tropicana (pictured, left). Next up: Don’t miss Boardwalk Hall’s “Deck the Hall Festival of Trees, which will see the venue’s lobby adorned with an array of custom-decorated trees sponsored by local businesses and institutions to raise money for the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. Deck the Hall kicks off with a gala reception on Thursday, Dec. 4, and subsequently is free and open to the public through January 2. More info: boardwalkhall.com

here may be those with greater name recognition this far, or whose ascent up the ladder was quicker, but Alan Macklovitch’s infiltration of the electronic dance music world on so many different levels seems almost unassailable. The master DJ best known as A-Trak has won three major EDM DJ competitions since bursting onto the scene about 18 years ago, his first the DMC World DJ Championship in 1997 at the age of 15. He also developed a unique notation system for scratching that’s been widely emulated, created his own record label, produced multiple hit singles and remixes, and was deemed the personal concert DJ for Kanye West. Touring behind a recently released EP that includes hit single with Andrew Wyatt called “Push,” the 32-year-old, Montreal-born A-Trak headlines Borgata’s MIXX nightclub on Saturday night. Renouned for merging the sounds of rap and electronic music, A-Trak is one of the most sought-after remixers in the EDM genre. His skills have also shown cross-genre appeal with groups like indie rockers the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who have incorporated his tracks into their EPs. The opening and closing sets Saturday night will be by another EDM VIP, Long Island’s Carlos Melange, who has opened for superstar Tiësto (visiting the Borgata Event Center on Dec. 18) and has a soon-to-be-released EP The Mélange Project: Volume 4 in the works. when Bennett reinvigorated his pop stardom with his classic jazzy, mellow sound. “It’s amazing,” he says. “People love to hear great music. They have an appetite for it. That’s why I’m still going strong.” The performer’s flair for engaging a crowd, certainly, is from another generation. “We, the people I came up with, knew how to entertain,” he says. “There’s an art to it. I just don’t think you see much of it anymore. But I keep it alive. I love to sing. The funny thing is that I’m still learning, even at this age.” Indeed, his warm tenor has aged beautifully; it still pierces right through the heart. “I’ve been very fortunate,”” he says. ““I’ve tried to make the right choices to be healthy so I can continue to play wonderful places. I’m having too much fun to hang it up; as long as I’m healthy enough to travel and make my way around stage, I’ll continue doing this.” Meanwhile, Bennett has given back, having opened the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in New York. “Frank Sinatra changed my life,” Bennett says simply. “He told Life magazine that I was the best singer he ever heard. I was moderately popular then — but after that, I took off and was selling out shows left and right. I’m still selling out. I owe Frank Sinatra something, and I think the something is to keep singing on a stage. He would do it if he was still around. I’ll do it for him.” N

ony Bennett could quit tomorrow if he so desired and he would go down as one of the most respected singers ever. But no: At 88, he’s got unfinished business. “I still have music in me,”” Bennett tells Atlantic City Weekly, calling from his Manhattan apartment. “I’m still a recording artist.” Cheek to Cheek, his latest album, is a collaboration with Lady Gaga. The disc, which dropped in September, features songs from the Great American Songbook. “We recorded some great songs by George Gershwin and Cole Porter,” Bennet says. “She is an amazing singer. I told her we should do a jazz record, and she was so excited. I met her parents; they love our collaboration.” Bennett and Gaga aren’t as diametrically opposed as many would guess. They first worked together on Bennett’s Duets album, which dropped three years ago, and on Cheek to Cheek there’s an ease between the pair: Gaga provides the power and camp, while Bennett counters with finesse and subtlety. Sure, at times, Gaga should dial it down and Bennett should amp it up — but overall, they’re a surprisingly solid combination, particularly on such old warhorses as “Anything Goes,” “Sophisticated Lady” and “Lush Life.” Both their winning personalities grab the listener from the very beginning, and they don’t let go.

Bennett, of course, has enjoyed a number of huge hits over the years, such as “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” “Because of You” and “Rags To Riches.” The 17-time Grammy winner, who’ll perform Friday at the Borgata, is more than a quartercentury in — not into his career, but into his comeback, which started during the late ‘80. Hair metal was at its bloated zenith

BY DAVID J. SPATZ

ou probably don’t realize it, but the holiday shopping season isn’t the only thing that jumps the gun these days to get an early start long before that frozen turkey thaws. Over the last several years, seasonal entertainment — which traditionally got underway Thanksgiving weekend — has inched forward into November, to the point where a couple of Atlantic City casinos have began rolling out their holiday shows not all that long past Halloween. Still, the big boom gets underway this week; A.C.’s colorful wintertime productions include: Brian Setzer Orchestra’s Christmas Rocks, Nov. 29 at Caesars. Since 1990, the front man for the rockabilly band Stray Cats has been gigging on the side with his own 18-piece big band, a rarity in any musical genre these days. The energetic Setzer is out in front leading the band with his lead guitar licks. His show is loaded with seasonal songs that jump, jive, swing and — in a bow to his Stray Cats roots — have a decided rockabilly feel to them. He usually tours with two singers (one of whom is his wife, Julie), and the orchestra members are dressed and accessorized for the season. In the 10 years the BSO has been doing its holiday show, staple songs include “Sleigh Ride,” “Boogie Woogie Santa Claus,” “Blue Christmas,” “Angels We Have Heard on High” and, of course “Jingle Bells.” The orchestra will also rock out with the BSO’s hit single from the late ‘90s, “Jump, Jive and Wail.”

Bobby Vinton & Jimmy Sturr Christmas, Dec. 3 at the Tropicana. This is such a natural pairing it’s a wonder it hasn’t been done before. Vinton, the romantic balladeer who scored a ton of love song hits in the 1960s, is popularly known as The Polish Prince because of his 1974 polka-flavored hit single “My Melody of Love,” which hit the top of the

adult contemporary charts and number three on the Hot 100 list. Jimmy Sturr has been fronting a polka orchestra for decades and has won the Grammy Award for best polka album 18 of the 24 years the award has been handed out. Together, Vinton and Sturr will perform traditional holiday favorites, some of which will have a decidedly polka beat and bounce. Allen Edwards: Home for the Holidays. Through Dec. 10 at Resorts Casino Hotel. Already performing his holiday show since early November. Edwards — known as “The Voice” or “The Voice of Branson” — mixes classic holiday songs with non-seasonal material. Edwards says Christmas is his favorite holiday because he’s been singing holiday music since he was six-years-old and performed his first solo — “Silent Night” in his church. He’s been hooked on singing and on the holidays ever since. Ebenezer, A Musical Christmas Carol, Dec. 12-14, 17-18 and 20 at Resorts. The Ocean Professional Theatre Company’s adaptation of this popular and uplifting Charles Dickens’ tale will be presented in Resorts Screening Room theater. The story tells of bitter and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge’s ideological, ethical, and emotional transformation resulting from supernatural visits from Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Holiday Extravaganza at the Tropicana, through Dec. 19. It’s hard to remember when Tropicana didn’t celebrate the season with a festive show of music, dancing, colorful costumes and elaborate staging. You name the holiday song, and chances are the show’s two

featured singers will be singing it, backed up by 10 beautiful dancers and surrounded by festive staging. The Atlantic City Ballet presents It’s a Shore Holiday at the Claridge Hotel, Nov. 28-29. This show is a blend of contemporary and classic dance set to beloved holiday tunes. It’s the kind of show that brings out the kid in all of us and is pure family entertainment. Best of all, it’s presented in the intimate Celebrity Theater at the Claridge. The Atlantic City Ballet presents The Nutcracker. It simply wouldn’t be Christmas without The Nutcracker, and this year there are two opportunities to see artistic director Phyllis Papa’s interpretation of the Tchaikovsky classic with a cast of nearly 100 performers. The first is Dec. 12-13 in the Performing Arts Center of the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. The second opportunity will be Dec. 18-23 in the ballet’s home base — the Celebrity Theater at the Claridge. For the third year, the ballet company will dance this timeless classic to the music of the Garden State Philharmonic. Boardwalk Christmas with Beth Tinnon & Friends, Dec. 5 at the Dante Hall Theater of the Arts. Song stylist Beth Tinnon, who’s gained a big following through her casino lounge appearances during the past decade, returns to this intimate, 214-seat theater on Mississippi Avenue in the heart of Atlantic City’s Ducktown section. Tinnon’s friends include well-known area musicians Andy Lalasis, Harry Himless, John Guida, and Jeff Turner. They’ll blend their music with Tinnon’s voice to perform all of your cherished holiday classics. ■

t may, possibly, be the least dignified pre-Christmas celebration ever to exist. It may also, perhaps, be the most amusing to watch: On Saturday, Dec. 6, the annual Running of the Santas returns to the Tropicana, where hundreds of locals will dress up in as much St. Nick costumery (or as little) as they’re inclined to, then roam in a big Kringlesque pack from pub to pub — led by a bevy of Hooters calendar girls because why not — in the name of raising money for the Ellie Koerner Leukemia Foundation. (Tickets are $10 in advance, $20 day-of.) The massive red-and-white bar crawl starts at Hooters at 8pm, moves to Firewaters at 9, on to A Dam Good Sports Bar at 10 — where the Hottest Santa contest will unfold — and finally concludes at Boogie Nights, where the Jingle Ball afterparty will see the first 200 Santas through the door gifted with complimentary white afros. Let us stress that we are not making this up. Ticketholders can get a special Trop hotel rate, too; for more info, visit runningofthesantas.com. — S.H.S.

hristmas is a festival of peace; Hanukkah is a festival of lights; both celebrate wondrous miracles. But there’s another miraculous holiday at work this season, too: Joe Holiday, the amazing prestidigitator whose Magic & Mayhem show runs at the Comedy Stop at the Trop through December, nightly except Wednesdays. Joe’s magic is of both the stage kind and the spiritual kind: “I am an Atlantic City native,” he says, “and my show centers around my life growing up in this magical city of ours. I take my audience back in time to the early 1900s to witness what my grandfather saw on the Steel Pier when he was just a young boy. I also show how, with just a pack of playing cards, two hearts in love can become one.” We’re getting a little weepy already! Manheim Steamroller, Nov. 29 at Harrah’s Resort. If there was ever a contemporary musical group synonymous with the holiday season, it’s Manheim Steamroller. This year, as it’s done for several years, the nine-piece band has been cloned so that one unit can tour the middle of the country and the second can work the heartland. This year’s show is titled “Manheim Streamroller 30/40,” and celebrates two milestones. It’s been 40 years since musician Chip Davis first began turning out his heavily synthesized sound under the pseudonym Manheim Steamroller, and 30 years since the group found its musical niche by turning out the first in a series of about 20 holiday-themed albums.

GENER ALLY AWESOME RICK SPRINGFIELD ON MERYL STREEP, CRO CODILES & BAT TLESTAR GAL ACTI C A BY D O N N A LYN CH

S

My husband is a fan — which was a requirement for staying married to me — and I asked him if he had any questions for you. He said: “How awesome is it that he was in the Battlestar Galactica pilot!” I’m not sure how that’s a question, but there you go. No, that’s not a question, but yes, it was pretty awesome. I am a sci-fi geek, and when I got the role I was so excited — then I read the script and saw I got blown to crap 20 pages in. When we were filming, we all made jokes about my Lt. Zac action figure that would come after the movie was released: Pull the string and he blows up. Or his doll is just an ear, floating in space. My fondest wish is to have a mass-produced action figure of myself in some awesome and very muscular and heartthrobby role.

Rick, I want you to feel comfortable sharing, so I thought I’d share something with you first: I still have a 30-something-year-old Trapper Keeper that’s got “Mrs. Donna Springfield” written on it in marker. (Also, a not-very-good drawing of a unicorn.) Furthermore, I’ve been advised by my editor not to spend this entire interview asking about your 1989 vampire-detective TV movie Nick Knight. So tell me a little about your new film Ricki and the Flash. Nick Knight

How excited was Meryl Streep to work with you? She was very nervous. I, on the other hand, was cool as a cucumber. Hon-

wrote “moot” and not “mute” on the scrolling lyrics. Honestly, who copies these karaoke lyrics out?

You’ve been performing since you were a teenager. If you could go back in time and tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? “Don’t be such a jerk.”

ince Rick Springfield last went on tour, something kind of remarkable has gone down in the iconic rocker/actor’s life: He’s just finished filming a costarring role alongside newly-minted Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree Meryl Streep in the upcoming movie Ricki and the Flash, directed by Academy Award-winning auteur Jonathan Demme. Could a new Age of Springfield be upon us? Looking forward to his show this Saturday at the Golden Nugget, Atlantic City Weekly recruited musician and über-“Jessie’s Girl”-fan Donna Lynch to sit the sometime General Hospital star down and find out.

was ahead of its time. [Laughs.] Jonathan Demme contacted me when I was on the road and asked if I wanted to come and jam with Meryl Streep. So I went to L.A. and played some songs with a band and Meryl singing, then went to New York for what they call a ‘”chemistry read,” where you just read from the script and see what the chemistry is between the two actors. They already knew I had some acting chops, so they were more concerned about how Meryl and I were together. The movie is about a cover band called Ricki and the Flash in Los Angeles; without giving too much away, it’s about a woman who has a second chance to make things up to her family back in Indiana. I play Meryl’s boyfriend, the guitar player in the Flash; Kevin Kline plays her ex-husband, and the script was written by Diablo Cody (Juno). It was a blast to shoot — I spent six and a half weeks in New York, and although there are no superheroes or aliens in it, I think it’s got a great shot.

I also do a pretty great karaoke version. I just wanted you to know. I hope they

You wrote a song called “Who Killed Rock & Roll?” Do you think traditional rock can ever come back in big, mainstream way? Or have the genres crosspollinated too much by now? I think ra-

Rick on Rick: “I always find it funny that people think of me as a happy shiny person.”

estly, she is the best there is, and incredibly giving as an actor; she puts you at ease right away. And yes, I was fricking nervous when we first met.

Okay, back to Nick Knight: As someone who loves the horror genre, I’m curious whether you were channeling a dark side with that role. Are you drawn to that sort of thing? Grown-up 1980s goth girls everywhere need to know. Well, if you read my autobiography and even my novel Magnificent Vibration, then you know my dark side is pretty prevalent. I always find it funny that people think of me — when they do — as a happy shiny person. All my songs are about stuff I didn’t get, or regrets I have, or failures I beat myself up over. I wear a lot of black, if that’s any indication.

You’re originally from Australia. It’s a well-known fact that everything in

Australia will kill you. How many great whites and/or crocodiles have you fought? I don’t talk about it much, but I am the only guy in the world who has fought a white shark and a salt-water crocodile simultaneously while making sure my hair stayed perfectly coiffed. Other guys have done it, but couldn’t get the hair thing to happen. Seriously, growing up in Australia you learn a healthy respect for both creatures. Australia seems to have cornered the market on bad-ass animals. WTF???

Singer-songwriter Mary Lambert has recently done a poignant cover of “Jessie’s Girl.” Have you heard it? I thought it was really cool. A new perspective on a well-known song is refreshing, especially when it’s your song. I just reworked “Jessie’s Girl” for an animated film called Max and Me, and it lends itself to that modern band treatment, too.

dio has mutated beyond redemption, and it will be millions of isolated stations with no connection to each others’ playlists. Pop is still very much alive on top 40 radio, but sadly rock & roll seems to have outgrown its welcome as far as playing new music goes. Thank god for specialized rock radio — they’re still the best stations to make out to.

Finally: I hate the phrase “bucket list” because it makes death sound so imminent, but what’s something you really want to do that you haven’t yet? I’d like to star in a movie with Meryl Streep — oh, wait. Uh-oh. Actually, my bucket list has a lot of things crossed out, but is still over 100 yards long and growing. Is “Have a pet dinosaur” a realistic one? I don’t know — I can’t tell anymore. ■

MORE THAN A CUP O’ JOE BARISTA’S COFFEE HOUSE HE ATS UP IN NEW LINWO OD LO CATION BY FRANK GABRIEL

t didn’t take our recent bout of frosty November temps to focus Deborah and Mark Becker’s attention on steamy beverages. No, the Beckers, who own Barista’s Coffee House in Linwood, admit they’ve been fairly well obsessed with the hot-brewed elixir of life for some years now. They spent the past five at Barista’s original outpost in Galloway Township — then were pleased to discover that prime corner space near the front of Linwood’s upscale Central Square was opening up this past February. The couple took five months to rehab the former art gallery, literally from the ground up (they credit Mark’s stepparents, Bill and Sara Becker, and best friend Michael Lagana with assisting them throughout the process), and the new Barista’s opened in July. Beverage options span a wide directory of hot items, most notably nine signature espresso-based drinks. The house special, Barista’s latte, combines espresso, French vanilla and caramel syrups, steamed milk, and whipped cream topped with caramel sauce. Other fanciful flavors include the likes of amaretto bean, hazelnut truffle, cinnamon bun and salted caramel. The Beckers have even gone so far as to search out an independent, local coffee roaster who provides all of their beans. For all that, though, it’s the brief but superior food menu that really sets Barista’s apart from oth-

er coffee shops. Like the big, badass BLT on crusty, grilled ciabatta bread — one of the best we’ve sampled, elevating a relatively basic sandwich construct into something truly memorable. Or the meatball sliders. Or the pork enchiladas (also available with chicken), which deliver an open-faced combo of saucy, well-seasoned meat plus plenty of shredded greens, topped with a most excellent add-on: whole fried eggs. Waffles are another house specialty, with two distinct batters, the savory Brussels and rarer sweet Liege — imported from Belgium, utilizing pearl sugar kneaded into the flour — both present on the bill of fare. And now, with colder weather arriving, Deb Becker has begun formulating soups as well. Her first bowl, traditional New England clam chowder, brimmed with plenty of bivalve bits and diced potato in a light, creamy broth. Other blends expected soon are chicken corn chowder, seasonal butternut squash with apple, tomato basil and Hungarian mushroom — possessing goulash style-essences — which the owners hope will be just as well received as their coffee has been. â–

MOCKINGJAY PART I SETS UP THE HUNGER GAMES FINALE BY LORI HOFFMAN

the finish with next year’s Mockingjay Part 2 — has presented an action-packed episode here, including a terrific operation to rescue Peeta Mellark that provides this chapter’s narrative climax. Julianne Moore is a nice addition to the series as President Coin, her normally ravishing red hair hidden under a gray and white wig as the determined political leader of the rebellion. There’s a hint of sadness in seeing the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the politically savvy Plutarch Heavensbee, who managed to be a Capitol bigwig while secretly working with the rebels. Another strong contribution comes from Jeffrey Wright, who has more to do in this chapter as the electronic wizard

Mockingjay Part 1 does what it can to provide the proper amount of anticipation for the series finale coming in November of 2015. ■

henever a movie is saddled with “Part 1” in the title you can bet it contains a lot of set-up material and is probably unlikely to provide a satisfying ending. And, while The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 does come saddled with those expected restrictions, it delivers a decent preview of the big finish coming in the final chapter, thanks mostly to Jennifer Lawrence’s continued excellence as the people’s champion, Katniss Everdeen. When last we saw Katniss she was being rescued from her second appearance in the Hunger Games, the 75th Anniversary Quarter Quell. Her success has provided a face for the growing rebellion against the privileged citizens of the Capitol and their odious leader President Snow (Donald Sutherland). The rebels have their own leader, President Coin (HG newcomer Julianne Moore), who plans to bring more citizens into the rebellion by using Katniss as the face of the rebels’ public relations campaign. That campaign shows the ongoing carnage as the Capitol uses its superior firepower to destroy the districts that have declared war. Katniss tells President Snow via these political spots that his precious Capitol will soon feel the wrath of the rebel’s fiery retaliation. Meanwhile the Capitol has its own popular spokesperson, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), who is spouting Snow’s rhetoric as Katniss watches in horror, although she’s sure that Peeta is being forced to deliver Snow’s propaganda against his will. And the third side of the Hunger Games romantic triangle, Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), is determined to keep Katniss safe as the battle for Panem continues. Mockingjay Part 1 is a solid entry in the Hunger Games series despite being handcuffed by its status as only the first half of a complete novel.
