THE BEAUTY OF UGLY

T

hings look different from way up high. When you’re down in the middle of stuff — whether that stuff is as banal as traffic on Route 9 or as extraordinarily unsettling as news headlines have been lately, both locally and nationally — it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it all. Climb far above the mess, though, and look down from a distance, and your perspective changes. Sometimes, everything looks clearer. That’s why I dig the Absecon Lighthouse — and lighthouses in general, but certainly our own, one of the tallest in America. From 171 feet over the inlet, it’s easier to remember how transitory our daily headaches really are. And that’s why Absecon Lighthouse’s choice of holiday celebration strikes me as particularly fitting. On Saturday, Dec. 6, the tower is hosting an Ugly Holiday Sweater party, offering prizes to whomever shows up in the most hideous such garment to enjoy the evening of music, food & drink and scenery. Often when we go out to socialize, we fret about looking as impressive as we can — so it’s welcome to be invited to remember that being stylish isn’t really all that, and that sometimes, embracing ugliness might just lead us to unexpected victory. It’s a different perspective. And some days, that’s just what we need. ■More info: abseconlighthouse.org

Devils’ top minor-league affiliate) doubled up the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (a Flyers affiliate) 4-2 on the Art Dorrington Ice Rink at Boardwalk Hall. Paul Thompson (pictured scoring, far left) had two goals for the Devils before an announced crowd of 3,458 fans, and has a team-leading 11 goals for the season. he DJ dubbed Sat-One was born into a Philadelphia family that loved its music, honed his creativity in a formal setting at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, and secured a pedigree as a nightclub presence after a Grammy award-winning Philly legend took him under his wing more than 20 years ago. Sat-One served as a teen intern at DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Touch Of Jazz Studio in the early 1990s. In the nearly quarter century since, he’s become one of the best mixers/scratchers in the nightclub business, never straying too far from his hip-hop roots but deftly blending different genres into what he proudly calls the Philly Sound. Sat-One continues his residency on Saturday night at Dusk nightclub, one of the three components of the Dusk Complex that’s open 10pm-4am or later every Friday, Saturday and Tuesday. Retro’s nostalgia bar is open those same days from 6pm-5am, and the third Dusk component, Backyard Bar, from noon daily. Sat-One will also be spinning Dec. 9 during Industry Night Tuesday, which, like Friday and Saturday, adheres an open-style DJ format and has no cover charge before midnight. Manning the turntables on Friday night, Dec. 5, will be South Jersey product DJ Dosage, a multi-instrumentalist whose love of rock, EDM and rap music steered him toward deejaying on the Philadelphia and A.C. nightclub scenes. lthough he’s been a regular contributor to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show for nearly 20 years with his “Back in Black rants, Lewis Black still doesn’t have his own TV show. But that doesn’t mean the politically charged comedian and former playwright lacks a mass media outlet for his humor, which — based on current events — changes on a daily basis. Ever since he launched his current The Rant is Due tour — which will continue well into 2015 — Black has been streaming many of his live shows on the Internet. Although he occasionally tweets, Black, 66, admits he’s not much of a “techno-person. He told the Web site Boston.com that he experimented with streaming video with two shows he performed in California early in the tour, and he was pleased with the outcome. “Technically, it went astonishingly well and it was the first time that I was convinced that the medium really does work, Black said. “It was insane the quality of the video we were sending out. The slight hypocrisy isn’t lost on Black, who’s now embracing the technology and social media he’s been known

to comically criticize in his act. His biggest problem with the Internet and social media like Twitter and Facebook, he says, is the way people react to stories and situations they see on the web and then take as gospel. That’s why Black doesn’t do much tweeting. Besides, he gets all tongue-tied trying to deliver a gag in just 140 characters. “I’m not a great one-liner guy, Black told Boston.com. “By the time I get to 140 characters, I’ve barely got the joke started. Meanwhile, with the 2016 presidential race about to start heating up next year, Black has his favorite candidates, at least from a comedy sense; expect him to dip into the political waters this weekend when he returns to Borgata’s Music Box for shows Friday and Saturday nights. “The most fun for the Republicans would be a tossup between (Texas Sen.) Ted Cruz and (Texas Gov.) Rick Perry for the Republicans, and I think for the Democrats, it would have to be (Vice President) Joe Biden, Black recently told the Lansing State Journal. “I keep trying to find... ways to CONTINUED ON PAGE

EXIT 1 OYSTER STOUT by Flying Fish Brewing Company. Let’s get this out the way right up front: This beer does not taste like oysters. (It’s made with the shells, not the gooey bits.) Oyster stouts were inspired by the Irish tradition of pairing a hearty Irish stout with a meal of oysters. With Exit 1, New Jersey’s Flying Fish adds a little potency to the mix but otherwise adheres close to tradition. The Jersey Shore-sourced shells impart a briny, salty tang that plays wonderfully off the creamy chocolate sweetness and roast malts. The finish is sharp and dry. Though quite tasty on its own, this is a beer that begs to be paired with a meal. Where beer is sold. flyingfish.com

FIERI’S FIERY FL AIR THE FOOD IS FABULOUS , FL AVORFUL AND WHIMSICAL A S THE ESTABLISHMENT’S FOUNDER BY FRANK GABRIEL

22

DECEMBER 4 - 11, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

I

’ll be first to admit to being nonplussed when the announcement arrived early this year that Food Network fixture Guy Fieri would be opening his first-ever chophouse on the sixth floor of Bally’s Atlantic City. But after a pair of visits — one a wellorchestrated media event, the other a regular dinner out — I’ve come to respect and even admire what the spiky-haired talking head and his team have accomplished. Heavily influenced by clever, capable Caesars executive chef Keith Mitchell, the bill of fare nicely stretches to touch all requisites of the genre: hearty, wood-grilled meats, elegant, often locally sourced seafood, bountiful portions and potent cocktails. But it’s the small, well-executed details that make this oceanfront chophouse shine. Case in point: succulent, wood-fired braised pork employed in an appetizer of BBQ stuffed mushrooms. Combined with corn, green chiles, aromatic asiago and Fieri’s Carolina-style sauce, the result is a cool, novel spin on a popular, casual plate. Or house signature “Vegas fries sliced into unusual, twisty shapes — referred to as “sidewinder — and delivered admirably crisp, tossed with Buffalo “dust and sided with a “bleu-sabi dip. Seasoned assertively, plated quickly and arriving steamy hot, these are among the most addictive fries we’ve encountered locally. Easily the best starters, however, were the sashimi tuna tacos: prized big eye tuna, mango, jicama and chiles, topped with wasabi crema/sweet soy. A masterful dice of

costly, purplish fish was undeniably fresh and blended creatively with those pleasant fruit and veg accompaniments. Each bite delivered a delightfully capricious array of essences — balancing sweet, hot, savory and salty — and the trio of mini taco shells were arranged in a nifty, stand-up device. Fieri’s menu, broad and ambitious, has plenty of moving parts, including an extensive selection of raw bar and sushi fare. In addition to those tuna tacos, three other rolls plus a variety of oysters, clams and crustaceans are available. In that same vein, our first entrĂŠe, Lobster On Fire, was a worthy variation on standard fra diavolo, utilizing whole, potent Tuscan chiles to generate quite a bit of heat. Mountainous in size and shape, an entire cold-water lobster tail was split in half, sautĂŠed and angled atop a turban of toothsome linguine. The chunky tomato-based sauce, admirably spicy, was bold and brash, but not enough to overpower the lobster’s delicate sensibilities. At the urging of our server, we sampled a revision to the menu as of that very evening. Though the horseradish-crusted prime rib had been served since opening day, Fieri’s is now sourcing it with the prestigious 1855 brand beef from Colorado: certified Angus from carefully selected herds, characterized by producers as being “historically fine.â€? My 18-ounce slab was a compact, juicy, utterly delectable anvil, tender and yielding, two inches thick. In the past I’ve always preferred bone-in cuts of rib eye and New York

strip, due to the overly fatty prime rib one sometimes encounters. Here, though, there were no such issues; the meat displayed an ideal ratio of marbling without becoming stringy or tough. The taste — fruity, herbaceous and floral — reflected the verdant Rocky Mountain pastures upon which these steer once grazed. Accompanied by jus and a spirited, creamy horseradish, this is simply a divine piece of beef. Consider yourself a prime rib aficionado? This alone warrants a holiday-season visit. Ardent Fieri fans may rest assured there are plenty of Guy-isms scattered throughout the restaurant’s flamboyant, extroverted persona. “Guy’s Potato Rigâ€? allows patrons to customize their spuds with a wide range of gourmet add-ins including Sonoma cheddar or butter, Applewood bacon, roasted green chiles and green onion relish. Desserts, prodigious and whimsical, began with another signature, S’mores tacos. Three sweet shells are stuffed to overflowing with warm chocolate brownie, Nutella and homemade marshmallow. Lighter than imagined and crisp, they were just the right touch after that hefty side of beef. My dining partner’s choice was a seasonal warm apple bread pudding with Jersey apple cider anglaise — and a beyond-salty bacon-brown sugar ice cream, the kitchen’s only real misstep of our meal. â–

LOVE AND GENIUS ‘THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING’ IS AN ODE TO STEPHEN HAWKING’S MIND AND MARRIAGE

through his eyes in the latter stages of the story, Redmayne is breathtaking. However, his performance would not be nearly as effective if he didn’t have his acting partner, Jones, as the counterpart, a woman who must take care of her husband and raise three children. Her sacrifices are expected, but the emotional toll of this life is shown in quiet flashes of desperation, in the frustration that her wishes and feeling must always come second. If the Academy is looking carefully, Jones should also be nominated — and not as a supporting actress, often the fate

for the “good wife” performance. The Theory of Everything might be a conventional biography, but the performances in the lead roles elevate it to an emotionally satisfying look at a marriage that needed an incredible combination of strength and love to work. ■

efore seeing this movie, my knowledge of Stephen Hawking was that he was a brilliant scientist whose body was ravaged by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or, more familiarly, Lou Gehrig’s disease. Thanks to the film The Theory of Everything, his life as a husband and father has now been revealed in an engaging biography that comes to life in the caring and lovely performances by Eddie Redmayne as Hawking and Felicity Jones as his wife Jane. Directed by James Marsh, best known as a documentary filmmaker (Man on Wire, Project Nim) and written by Anthony McCarten, based on the book by Jane Hawking, the film follows the standard path of a biography. Therefore one needs an interesting life to examine to keep the by-thebook ambiance of the narrative humming along. The Theory of Everything does that thanks to its excellent balancing act between examining the love story of Stephen and Jane, the tragedy of his disease, and the triumph of the brilliant mind that survived and thrived despite the indignities of being trapped in a body that continued to break down. Whatever rage Hawking felt at his fate, his determination to have a life despite his illness is the most admirable quality the film celebrates. He was 21 when he was diagnosed and told he had two years to live. Both he and Jane are determined to live what time they had together to the fullest. On the personal side this included having a family, and on the professional side his continued fascination with black holes and the history of the universe. Biographical films have made for popular Oscar bait since the Academy Awards were first introduced. Add to that the love shown by the Academy for a performer playing someone who has overcome physical disabilities, and Eddie Redmayne leaps to the top of the list as a likely best-actor nominee for his remarkable performance as Hawking. From contorting his body to show the physical demands of living with ALS, to being limited to show his emotional life
