he renowned design firm SOSH Architects has completed a $2 million makeover of the Ballroom at Tropicana Casino & Resort. The newly remodeled space conveys modern day elegance with a nod to traditional design. Additionally, Tropicana has revamped its lighting, audio and video capabilities. “The environment of any event space has a significant impact on energy level, how people absorb information and how they connect with others,” said Steve Callender, General Manager of Tropicana. “The Ballroom will provide an elegant backdrop to any function. The new look was approached creatively and is innovative in design.” The complete redesign began with an all-new infrastructure to accommodate moving lights and digital video displays throughout the room as well as an advanced high quality audio system for optimal clarity. A full array of advanced LED track fixtures and air walls provide optimum flexibility for opening or dividing the space as needed. The jewels of the space are the oversized crystal and silk chandeliers that bring new light and atmosphere to the ballroom. Custom mosaic mirrors add a layer of glamour and glitz reflecting the movement of the new and richly textured carpet. At almost 18,000 square feet, the Ballroom can accommodate groups as large as 1,940.

famous line by country crooner Kenny Rogers goes “You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em,” so plenty of gamblers took Golden Nugget’s decision to fold its poker room last October at face value. After all, the property offered no real indication that any alternative plans were in the works. Well it turns out we were all the victim of a masterly bluff. The day after Christmas, Dec. 26, Golden Nugget unveiled a new and improved poker room, part of the $150 million renovation that is still manifesting itself more than two years after Tilman Fertitta, CEO of Golden Nugget’s parent company Landry’s Restaurants, first purchased the property. The new room is located in the Main Atrium where the former high-limit slot area was (and the high-limit slots relocated to the site of the former poker room), and features 10 tables. Games will include popular versions like No Limit Texas Hold’Em, Pot Limit Omaha, 7-Card-Stud, Flop Poker, 3-Card Poker, 4-Card Poker, Mississippi Stud, Caribbean Stud, Let it Ride, and Pai Gow. The room is open 24 hours per day and will soon offer a full schedule of tournaments, promotions and special events. A poker menu is also available, and the Bravo Tracking system is featured along with a Bravo live app to help keep players abreast of all Golden Nugget poker offerings. James Vincent McMorrow ‘Post-Tropical’ (Vagrant)

P

ost-Tropical,, James Vincent McMorrow’s follow up to his 2011 debut Early in the Morning,, sucks you in like a power vacuum, pours the atmospherics over you like honey at tea time and leaves you floating somewhere between the moon, Dublin and New York City. McMorrow, who’ll turn 31 the day his sophomore LP is released (Jan. 14), has a “voice ... too devastating to ignore,” writes Complex, is from Ireland — where he’s already a star — and loves R&B and hiphop, which, between his aching falsetto, brass marching bands, and even 50 mandolins creating a waterfall effect, you can hear elements of on the new LP. “I wanted to give this record the feel and movement of the hip-hop records that I love,” McMarrow says of the album he constructed over an eight-month period, blending sounds and gorgeous textures to give new life to scraps of melodies and lyrics he had stored away on digital files for years. This stunning, haunting and triumphant record is one of the first great ones you should check out this year. — Jeff Schwachter

Boardwalk Hall a Global ‘Top Spot’ By Lori Hoffman

B

oardwalk Hall has been recognized as one of the “Top Stops” of 2013 by leading entertainment trade publications Venues Today and Billboard. Boardwalk Hall placed eleventh in the world on both charts for yearly rankings among venues in the 10,001-15,000 capacity category. The Hall was also ranked number three in North America and two in the United States by Billboard and number four in the United States and five in North America by Venues Today. Boardwalk Hall accumulated a total box office gross of $10,526,761 by Venues Today’s October to October calculations, placing itself in the company of mid-sized venues around the world such as the Brisbane Entertainment Center in Australia, O2 World Hamburg and the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. Some notable events Boardwalk Hall hosted included Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” tour, Adrian Broner vs. Antonio DeMarco in the WBC Lightweight World Championship, The Who’s “Quadrophenia and More” tour, Beyoncé’s “The Mrs. Carter Show” and the 2014 Miss America Competition. Billboard rankings were based on box office grosses from Nov. 14, 2012 to Nov. 12, 2013, when Boardwalk Hall totaled $13,141,038 for the year. The venue was compared to other mid-sized arenas such as Perth Arena, the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, and Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand. In addition to the yearly events listed above, the Billboard report also included a three-day sell-out concert of Phish, a huge event for Boardwalk Hall in 2013. see more online @

The second annual Tropicana Beer Week kicks off Sunday, Jan. 12, and runs through Jan. 18. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

T

he line “I’m not really a beer person” was fine a decade ago when most suds tasted similar to the Schlitz your dad drank back in the day, but a lot has changed since then. The craft beer movement has not only opened up another whole world of styles and flavors — some sure to sway even the staunchest of the beer-biased — but it also appears to be on its way to overshadowing the mass-produced, household-name brews in popularity. A weeklong series returning for the second year will provide plenty of opportunity to find out what the modern-day hubbub over suds, or brouhaha over brews, is all about. Tropicana Beer Week is Sunday through Saturday, Jan. 12-18, at multiple venues throughout the property, including a free comprehensive seminar

called Beer 101 Monday night (7-9pm), Jan. 13, at Tango’s Lounge with a variety of specials and giveaways from reps of beer giant Anheuser Busch. Two other nights geared toward helping guests expand their beer-knowledge horizons will be Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 14 and 15. On Tuesday it’s the Flying Fish Dinner at FIN restaurant, where Gene Muller, founder of South Jersey’s Flying Fish Brewery, will oversee a five-course meal expertly paired with seven beers. A $75 per-person fee includes an exclusive reception, tax and gratuity, and live entertainment at Tango’s Lounge afterward. Call 800-345-8767 for reservations. On Wednesday at the Top of the Trop, author and beer expert Gary Monterosso will host a special pairing and tasting of five of his

favorite brews from 7-9pm. Admission is $25 person. Monterosso will also be on hand to autograph his book Artisan Beer: A Complete Guide to Savoring the World’s Finest Beers. Trop newcomer Broadway Burger Bar is involved in a pair of events including a beer brunch Sunday, Jan. 12, from 11:30am4:30pm ($20 per person), and a beer dinner Thursday, Jan. 16, starting 7pm for $36 per person. On Friday, Jan. 17, Il Verdi Italian restaurant will host an International beer-and-food pairing featuring Peroni Nastro Azzurro lager from Italy, Estrella Damm lager from Spain, Warsteiner Premium Dunkel from Germany, Carta Blanca from Mexico, Carib from Trinidad and Kingfisher from India. The beers will be perfectly paired with international cuisine starting 7pm at $65 per person, including tax and gratuity. Call 800-345-8767 for reservations. Tap takeovers will be taking place at Tango’s, Rumba Lounge, and the bar at FIN, where each bar will showcase local craft beers and those abroad all week long from top breweries including Sierra Nevada, Goose Island, Flying Fish, Tuckahoe, Brooklyn Brewery, Magic Hat, Victory, Anheuser Busch and Miller Coors. Nearly every other establishment inside the Trop has specials geared around Beer Week, so check out Tropicana.net (click the Events tab at the top, or the Beer Week link at the lower right) for more information. Special overnight packages are also

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

being offered during Beer Week. *** Monterosso recently assembled a small post-Christmas, pre-New Year’s get-together at one of the area’s newest hot spots for craft beers, fine wines, hard-to-find spirits and gourmet small-plates fare — Atlantic City Bottle Company (648 N. Albany Ave.). I sampled a bottle of Thomas Creek River Falls Red Ale, brewed in Greenville, South Carolina, and the Dogfish Head 60-Min IPA and Cape May Brewing’s City to Shore Double IPA from the taps. The latter brew takes its name from the Bike MS: City to Shore ride that has raised millions of dollars each year to fight multiple sclerosis since 1980. Cape May Brewing has participated in the ride — which goes from Philly to Ocean City and back over two days every September — every year since its founding in 2011, and has raised more than $20,000 toward the cause. “Ryan [Krill, Cape May Brewing’s co-founder] will continue to do a special beer each year in celebration of the ride,” says MacKenzie Landers Thorn, captain of the Cape May Brewing Company cycling team. “This was our third year for the Cape May Brewery team doing the MS150 ride, but Ryan and I had done it together before. We were part of the biggest, or one of the biggest, family and friends teams — Team Stacey. When they disbanded we decided to continue with our own team.” ■

Winter in the Casino Showrooms

By David Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com

A

s you peruse the list of headline entertainment scheduled for Atlantic City’s casinos between now and the beginning of spring, one name literally jumps off the page. And for good reason. Between 1985 and 1990, he performed in Atlantic City 13 times. The first eight or so gigs he was mostly an opening act. But he quickly became Atlantic City’s highest-paid act, often literally earning millions of dollar for each performance and becoming one of the town’s most popular attractions. Forget guys like Frank Sinatra; his $100,000-per-show contract was pocket change compared to what this heavyweight earned. But with all of his appearances here, and his ability to fill the biggest room to standing-room-only capacity, this once-dominant headliner will actually be making his Atlantic City debut on Jan. 25. So how can one of Atlantic City’s most crowd-pleasing acts be making his debut here? It’s all a matter of timing, venue and semantics. Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, once considered the most feared fighter in the history of the sport, will be making his first appearance as a casino showroom attraction when he performs his one-man show, Undisputed Truth, in the Circus Maximus Theater at Caesars Atlantic City. The man who once flattened fellow heavyweight Michael Spinks with a singlepunch knockout just 91 seconds into their title fight at Boardwalk Hall in 1988 — and bit off part of Evander Holyfield’s ear during their fight in Las Vegas in 1997 — has created a stage show in which he comes mostly clean about his life, his career in the ring and his controversies, including his prison time for a rape conviction. The show, which was directed by Spike Lee, actually made it to Broadway for a limited run. Tyson has also created a TV version of the program for HBO. But considering his connection with Atlantic City — his career really did take off when he began fighting some four-rounders as part of the undercards at Resorts Casino Hotel — this is a show that deserves to be seen live on the Boardwalk, since Iron Mike will be performing just steps away from

Elvis Costello is at Caesars in March

the scene of some of his biggest triumphs: Boardwalk Hall. Other than Tyson, the Atlantic City casino winter showroom lineup is fairly light this year, which isn’t a surprise with casino revenues off for the seventh consecutive year and the 11 gaming halls trying to figure out how to selectively deploy their entertainment budgets. Borgata continues to offer the most shows, but it’s sticking mostly with acts that both it and its guests have established a rapport with, like Rob Thomas and comedians Lisa Lampanelli and Jim Norton. Besides Tyson’s one-night-stand, Caesars continues to embrace classic casino acts with proven track records on the Boardwalk, including Vanessa Williams, Elvis Costello and The Moody Blues. The House of Blues at Showboat has a lean schedule, with just three acts scheduled between now and early March, although that could change with some last-minute bookings. Revel Casino is mixing up its entertainment offerings in its 5,000 seat Ovation Hall with artists ranging from the rock band O.A.R. to soul queen Aretha Franklin. Boardwalk Hall has four professional hockey games with the Albany Devils and various opponents set between January and March along with several concerts. But that schedule could change shortly now that the hall — along with the Atlantic City Convention Center — is being managed by Global Spectrum, a division of entertainment giant Comcast Spectacor. ■ (See a schedule of all upcoming casino shows announced through April 2014 at acweekly.com)

HUMAN NATURE BORGATA

Human Nature — A quartet of Australians whose soaring harmonies capture the best of Motown, Human Nature had original pop hits Down Under and sold two million albums, but their success in the States has been based on their tribute to the classic R&B Motown hits from Smokey Robinson, the Supremes, the Four Tops and the Temptations. While they admit it might look strange that four white guys from Australia do Motown music, there is a reason Robinson has become a friend and mentor; they are that good, and their journey through Motown not only includes the sounds, but a recreation of the classic stage moves and outfits. Expect songs like “Baby, I Need Your Lovin’,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “My Girl” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” backed by a terrific band.

2014 Culinary Wish List

From specialty purveyors during niche time slots to eclectic and international cuisine, we propose what we’d like to see more of in A.C. By Frank Gabriel

ith a New Year upon us, we offer our most cherished wishes for food during 2014. A definitive brunch spot. This one is guaranteed to generate controversy. Sure, the Atlantic City region has plenty of quality morning-to-midday-meal providers, most notably, in our opinion, Ventnor’s Hannah G’s, Margate’s Downbeach Deli, Gilchrist and Maria’s in A.C., the Breakfast Spot in Somers Point, Ozzie’s in Longport, McGlade’s in Ocean City and Cape May, or any of the eight Cape May County-based Uncle Bill’s franchises. What we don’t seem to have is that singular eatery intent on creating a handful of daily specialty plates, such as one unforgettable omelet of sage-infused rabbit sausage (from treasured Di Bruno’s Italian Market in Philly), smoked Gouda and cippolini onions sautéed with tri-color Swiss chard, all freshly sourced. Our alltime favorite analogous eatery, South Philly’s now-defunct Carman’s Country Kitchen, dared serve only four items each day; usually a massive omelet with home fries, wildly creative French toast, pancakes or waffles, and a lunch platter varying from such succulent items as fried chicken, crab cakes or seared tuna. We think A.C. would welcome a similar operator. African cuisine. Aficionados of Mexican, Thai, Viet and Chinese will find plenty to suit their palates hereabouts. Not as true for the complex, plant-oriented diet of Africa. What we’d really welcome is an Ethiopian restaurant, with that nation’s aggressively seasoned, spicy food consumed by hand inside savory little pancakes. (In the interest of com-

plete disclosure, while researching this column we did discover a tiny Liberian place called Poteau African Village on Tennessee Avenue in A.C., and plan a visit soon.) Iron Room Prosperity. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, or a personal publicist, The Iron Room, a cozy little speakeasy-like dining room in the back of the A.C. Bottle Company, is the kind of place Atlantic City needs. We’ve been fortunate to see the creation of an almost disproportionate-to-the-overall-population number of superior restaurants crop up in the A.C. area over the last decade or so. That’s become a strongpoint of the area — the fact that big hospitality-industry players remain bullish and willing to

invest freely in new food ventures. The Iron Room, however, is a horse of different color. A chef’s kind of joint with ingredients from the far distant reaches of the culinary universe, but also readily accessible to anyone interested in experiencing true cutting-edge cuisine and craft beverages. We can’t help but be tickled to see chef Kevin Cronin, a former colleague and someone we are proud to call a friend, leading the charge. It’s nice to say we knew him back when. Return of the South American steakhouse concept. A.C.’s only venture that was dedicated to this roving, all-themeat-you-can-eat festival, the glamorous Rad’zio at Harrah’s, closed two years ago to make way for the earnest and

delightful Dos Caminos. We say it’s time — maybe if only for the summer months, at least — that someone bring back this bacchanalian style of feasting. Radizio’s also included the single greatest salad bar we’ve ever encountered, including a lengthy array of authentic, 15- and 25-year-old aged balsamic vinegars. Heightened culinary respect. Having mentioned this in this column before, and feeling the need to reiterate, A.C. is sometimes viewed as the Rodney Dangerfield of the gastronomic world. That needs changing. Ponder this: What other city of less than 50,000 year-round residents can boast the world-class selection of dining available regionally? Not just in the city, mind you, but a wide swath reaching upwards of 30 or so miles to our west, south and north. Virtually every major player in the culinary industry either has outposts here, or future plans for them. With casino gaming widespread, we feel that becoming a food haven is the most natural course of evolution for southern New Jersey’s tourism future. The recent addition of powerhouse operators like Landry’s (Golden Nugget’s parent company), Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, and Chickie’s & Pete’s illustrates this point. And remain forever mindful that this all began with the Borgata’s debut 10 years ago, and the continued presence of luminaries like Geoffrey Zakarian, Bobby Flay and Wolfgang Puck there. Economic ripples from these, and other food businesses, will reshape our area for years still to come. Blessed with an assortment of the planet’s finest produce, choosy chefs are also capable of realizing their most outrageous culinary dreams by coming to Atlantic City. ■

Top 10 Movies of 2013 A diverse collection of films, topped by ‘12 Years A Slave’, ‘Gravity.’ By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

I

n going back over my reviews from this past year, I was surprised that it was a struggle to find 10 movies that deserved to be on a top 10 list, which if we are being honest, is really a list of my 10 favorite films of the past year. While these films are listed in alphabetical order, the two films that rise way above the rest are 12 Years A Slave and Gravity. Can A Song Save Your Life This quirky musical dramedy is the latest effort from writer, director, musician John Carney, best known for the musical Once, viewed at the Toronto Film Festival. It’s a lovely slice of musical life starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. The Conjuring A haunted house flick directed by Saw director James Wan in a more restrained mode. It is old school without being oldfashioned and Lili Taylor is fabulous as a woman determined to save her family. Enough Said The shocking death of Sopranos’ star James Gandofini adds a wistful sadness while watching this gentle romantic comedy also starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and directed by Nicole Holofcener. Fruitvale Station The debut feature of 26-year-old Ryan Coogler, and based on a national incident, Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan) was a 22-year-old black man from Oakland, Calif., who was killed by a transit cop in Oakland, Cal. This day in the life, shot on a small budget and often with hand-held cameras, is quite ordinary but that’s the point. Injustice can strike at any moment. Gravity Alfonso Curon’s brilliant film is a perfect blend of breathtaking images tethered to an emotionally engaging story. He shows us the terrifying silence of space in conjunction with a spectacular accident that

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

creates a catastrophic cascade of events. Sandra Bullock has to convey her terror — and eventually her courage — from inside a space suit and does do effectively

The Heat Director Paul Feig takes a standard male action/comedy template, the odd couple cop movie, and blows it up with an estrogen bomb named Melissa McCarthy, while Sandra Bullock generously plays straight woman to McCarthy’s insane antics.

Lee Daniel’s The Butler Although based on the life of real White House butler Eugene Allen, this is a fictionalized film that uses the life of a real man as a jumping off point. A bit melodramatic at times but mostly inspirational, Forest Whitaker gives a brilliant performance in the title role.

Out of the Furnace Fueled by an amazing cast led by Christian Bale, Casey Affleck and Woody Harrelson, this film, co-written and directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart), is a gritty examination of blue-collar lives in turmoil, an intriguing hybrid of a classic Charles Bronson flick, Hard Times, and the mountain folk ambience of Winter’s Bone, with a desire for revenge as the thumping undercurrent.

The Place Among the Pines Starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes and directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine), it’s is a fascinating mash-up of crime thriller, police corruption and in its third act, a sins of the fathers finale.

12 Years A Slave Chiwetel Ejiofor is brilliant in the title role of director Steve McQueen’s brutal film that illustrates the agony, physical pain and humiliation of a free black man being ripped from his family and tossed into the vicious world of slavery. n see more online @

ringing in a musician with Dave Mason’s brand of name recognition is another big step in Revel’s quest toward diversifying and better utilizing its unique, centrally located entertainment venue called The Social. Mason, who performs Friday night, Jan. 3, with his band including drummer Alvino Bennett, keyboardist Tony Patler and guitarist Jason Roller, is a singer/ songwriter/lead guitarist with the loftiest of credentials. British born and living on the southern California coast since striking out as a soloist in 1970, Mason is a founding member of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame group Traffic (formed 1967, inducted 2004) with Jim Capaldi, Steve Winwood and the late Chris Wood, and spent two years in the mid-1990s as a member of another Rock Hall-of-Fame group, Fleetwood Mac. Mason’s fame is best born out of his solo work, though. He has produced over 25 live and studio albums (including a critically well-received one with an unlikely cohort, the late Mama Cass Elliott of The Mamas & The Papas, in 1971, and another with Leon Russell and Stevie Wonder in 1974) over a professional music career spanning nearly 50 years (now 67, and still performing about 100 live shows per year, Mason was 18 when he joined Traffic, and penned one of that group’s biggest initial hits, “Hole in My Shoe”). Many of the most popular songs Mason wrote were made even more popular by other artists, like “Feelin’ Alright” (also written as a member of Traffic,) which

“Most of the first part of the show and part of the second will be devoted to Traffic, and then I’ll play some new and classic stuff.” was covered by 48 different groups/musicians including Joe Cocker, who moved it way up the music charts in 1972. “Let It Flow” and “We Just Disagree” were top10 singles by Mason, and beautiful songs like “Every Woman” and “Show Me Some Affection” received substantial air play on radio stations worldwide, as have his songs “Only You Know And I Know,” “So High (Rock Me Baby, Roll Me Away),” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” He also did (and still does, in nearly every live concert) an exceptional version of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” and among the myriad fellow superstars he’s backed up on various projects was the late Jimi Hendrix on Hendrix’s final album of new material, Electric Ladyland. The acoustic 12-string lead into Hendrix’s version of “Watchtower” on Ladyland was played by Mason. A longtime friend and collaborator of Hendrix, Mason was also interviewed for the recently released PBS American Masters documentary called Hear My Train A Comin’ about Hendrix’s life. Mason is starting a tour that runs through May 16 called Dave Mason’s Traffic Jam. The tour’s kickoff date is the

A.C. gig Friday night at The Social, and will include all of Mason’s hits mentioned above along with some new material and songs from Traffic’s first two albums, Mr. Fantasy produced in 1967, and the eponymous Traffic in 1968. Mason spoke with Atlantic City Weekly by phone from his home near Santa Barbara, California. Can you tell us a little about the new album you’re working on? Some of it’s studio, some of it’s live – it’s a mixture of a lot of stuff, which is why the name of it will be Future’s Past. I’ve taken two or three of my older songs and have completely redone them in a completely different way, and there’s some new stuff on there. It’s a combination of things, a couple of Traffic tunes on there. How many songs will be on it? As far as putting out CDs with 10 or 12 or 14 songs, at this point I think that’s sort of a waste. I think I’m just going to do five or six tunes at the most. We used to call them EPs back when I first started making records [short for “extended play”], which at the time was four or five songs on the same side of a 45 rpm disc.

What can your fans in the Atlantic City area expect to hear at the Revel show? Most of the first part of the show and part of the second will be devoted to Traffic, and then the rest of the show I’ll play some of the new stuff and some of my classic stuff. I mean, they’re going to want to hear [the classics] anyway, so to not do it is kind of crazy. I’m going to mostly take highlight songs from those first two albums and incorporate the hits along with some new stuff. You last played in this area in July 2012 [as part of the Stockton Goes to the Beach series in Cape May] and before that you were part of a benefit concert for an educational foundation in Ocean City [at the O.C. Music Pier in 2010]. I noticed on your Web site [davemasonmusic.com] that you do quite a bit of charitable work. Well, that [Ocean City] show was likely set up by the concert organizers. My charity, the one that I devote most of my time to, is for the vets. It’s called Work Vessels for Veterans [Mason is listed on the organization’s site, workvesselsforveterans.org, as one of its founding members and part of its board of directors] and its primary mission is to help veterans start their own businesses, get the tools and education they need, and help them transition back into a normal life after coming home from war overseas. It was founded by friends of mine from Mystic, Connecticut — John Niekrash and Ted Knapp — about six years ago. Why was that particular charity something that became important to you? Well, I think basically it’s something that should be important to everybody. Anybody who devotes their lives to serving their country, and especially those who put their lives on the line for others, need all the help they can get. Do you still enjoy the life of the touring musician, and are you looking forward to coming back to Atlantic City? Sure, we love touring. I just wish we were coming [to Atlantic City] during a better time of year. But we’ll warm it up. n see more online @

The Albany Devils serve as the top developmental team for the New Jersey Devils. Last year, the Devils had 15 players play in both the AHL with Albany and the NHL with New Jersey. Of those players, five of them made their NHL debuts last season. The four game series kicks off Sunday, Jan. 12, at 4pm vs. the Hershey Bears, once the minor league club for the Philadelphia Flyers and now the top affiliate of the Washington Capitals. Other games in the series are Friday, Feb. 14 at 7pm, vs. the Hershey Bears, Saturday, March 1 at 7pm vs. Wilkes Barre/Scranton (Pa.) Penguins and Sunday, March 23 at 4 pm vs. Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins. “We are very excited to welcome the Albany Devils back to Boardwalk Hall,” says Greg Tesone, general manager of Boardwalk Hall. “We received a great reception from local fans last season when we hosted the Devils for four games.”

Series ticket packages will be $99 for the first two rows on the glass, $79 for the lower bowl, and $59 for the upper bowl. Series tickets can be purchased up until one week before the first game. Individual pricing is as follows: $26 for the first two rows on the glass, $21 for the lower bowl, and $16 for the upper bowl. hen the Boardwalk Bullies left town, the hockey ice at Boardwalk Hall was mostly kept under wraps until the AHL (American Hockey League) stepped in and agreed to bring games to the Hall’s first-class venue, beginning in 2011. This year marks the third season the Albany Devils will play games at Boardwalk Hall. The AHL is the top minor league for developing players to eventually make the jump to the NHL, so these games offer the opportunity to see stars of tomorrow and occasionally a top NHL player who is rehabbing in the minors before his return to the big club. “The games in Atlantic City have been a great way to bring some future Devils players to New Jersey, in a unique, fanfriendly environment,” says Albany Devils general manager Chris Lamoriello. “Our recent visits to Boardwalk Hall have been positive experiences for our players, and more importantly, Devils fans.”

n other hockey news at Boardwalk Hall, on Sunday, Feb. 9, the Red Line Classic will take place, a charity contest that will feature firefighters from all over the Delaware Valley competing with and against former NHL players from the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers. This event begins with an 11am game between the FDNY and Philly Fire departments, a peewee game at 12:30pm, and the main event at 2pm, featuring former stars from the Flyers and Devils including Mark Recchi, Rick Tocchet, Joe Watson, Brian Propp, Todd Fedoruk, Bob Kelly, Jim Dowd, Ken Daneyko, Bruce Driver, Grant Marshall and more. Proceeds from this game will benefit All Hands Working and the Barkann Family Healing Hearts Foundation. The statistics show firefighters face a 300 percent greater risk of suffering a heart attack by simply performing their jobs. All Hands Working strives to bridge the gap and provide firefighters with the best available training and equipment to reverse the statistics. Money raised by this event will be used to fund grants as well as establish scholarship programs to provide funding to the children of the men and women of the fire service who made the ultimate sacrifice. Tickets are $20, $50 and $100; theredlineclassic.com.
