Kanye’s Revel Trifecta By Jeff Schwachter

W

hat didn’t happen during Kanye West’s pre-NYE three-night stint at Revel? On the first night, Friday, Dec. 28, the rap star took to the Ovation Hall stage in an all-white outfit, performing a 75-minute set, during which he wore a pair of masks that made international headlines. The next morning, Rolling Stone offered: “[Kanye] rocked a couple of bizarre full-head masks – a diamond-encrusted one on his remix of Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’ and … some kind of yeti costume (or a werewolf George Washington).” During Saturday night’s show, West spoke to the crowd on several subjects, including his sanity (“They’ll try to tell you Kanye’s so crazy, so deranged. … I ain’t crazy, I’m just not satisfied,” he said), the upcoming Grammy Awards (“Don’t expect to see me at the Grammys this year”) even though his latest album received six nominations), his cancelled tour with Lady Gaga, his women’s fashion line and receiving death threats on Twitter. What made Twitter and the rest of the social-media world explode was West’s announcement during his Sunday night and final show that his girlfriend Kim Kardashian was pregnant with the couple’s first child. Kardashian was in the 5,000-plus crowd, along with Kris Jenner and Jay-Z. As soon as West told the crowd that he and Kardashian are expecting a baby Kimye, the crowd went nuts — and the Internet soon followed suit. West told his fans to congratulate his “baby mom” and that the pregnancy was the “most amazing thing.” Revel hosted West five times in 2012, including two shows over the July 4 holiday, his only solo U.S. appearances since 2011, according to MTV.

Fat Boys ‘Pizza Box Set’ In early 1980s rap music, you had RUN DMC and the Fat Boys. The two New York crews experienced huge success in the MTV era and although Run DMC is oftentimes more revered for its influence, the Fat Boys (Kool Rock Ski, the late Buff Love the Human Beatbox and Prince Markie Dee) and the group’s comedy-filled music played a big part in the evolution of rap. Out of print for nearly 30 years, the Fat Boys’ self-titled debut (containing classics such as “Jailhouse Rap,” “Stick ’Em,” “Don’t You Dog Me” and “Can You Feel It?”) was remastered in 2012 and a limited-edition Record Store Day box set was released the day after Thanksgiving. The cardboard pizza box set includes the entire album (on a 12” picture disc depicting a pepperoni pizza), a glossy booklet with liner notes and rare photos, plus a digital download of bonus tracks and interviews. Family Fun Every Sunday at A.C. Library By Ray Schweibert

F

un Day Sunday” is one of several new programs the Atlantic City Free Public Library will be offering through the end of February. The programs start 2pm every Sunday and include historical and cultural themes like constructing Native American prayer sticks, Mardi Gras masks, Chinese New Year dimensional paper snakes, and more. The programs are free and open to the public (ages 8 through adult), and no experience in art is necessary. Since supplies are limited, interested attendees must register in advance by stopping by the main library’s Youth Services Department (1 N. Tennessee Ave., second floor) or calling 345-2269, ext. 3050. The schedule is as follows: Jan. 6, Soyal Festival of Purification and Renewal: Pahos Prayer Sticks (participants will create their own New Year’s prayer sticks, made to bless people, their homes, animals and plants, and to reflect on the past and look ahead to the coming year); Jan. 13, Simply Snowman Mosaic (participants will have a hands-on experience creating a beautiful mosaic canvas of a winter scene); Jan. 20, To the Mountaintop: A Mixed Media Sculpture (using words and images from Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, participants will create a collective mountain sculpture commemorating Dr. King’s work); Jan. 27, Celebrate National Puzzle Day (participants will design and make their own puzzles and take them home); Feb. 3, Mardi Gras Masks (using ordinary materials found around the house, participants will design and create their own Mardi Gras masks); Feb. 10, Chinese New Year Celebration: Paper Cutting (participants will learn about Chinese paper-cutting traditions and will create their own dimensional snakes); Feb. 17, Peace, Love and Hope Collages on Wood (participants will create a collage on wood with imagery of peace, love and hope); Feb. 24, African Shields (participants will learn about African tribal designs and make colorful masks to take home using simple materials). So You Think You Can Spin?

The inaugural Dusk DJ Series is underway and will decide who will claim a coveted residency at Caesars’ cutting-edge, multi-tiered nightclub. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

I

f you can look past the demons that haunted him and eventually ended his life at a young age, the Philadelphiaborn Adam Goldstein, best known as DJ AM, was an American success story. The love of music that steered him toward deejaying would eventually evolve into a multi-faceted business brand that included producing records, managing artists and partnering in prominent nightclubs. That latter category included Caesar’s 10,000-square-foot diversified nightlife complex called Dusk, where DJ AM, who summered in Margate throughout his childhood, was a business partner and the club’s first official resident DJ. On Dec. 14, Dusk initiated a search for what it hopes may become the next recognizable name in the nightclub business. Its inaugural Dusk DJ Series runs every Friday night and has featured dozens of DJs yearning to earn a residency at the club. A different group is brought in each Friday and eventually the auditions will be whittled down to six or eight finalists competing for a guaranteed set of six dates to headline at Dusk in 2013. Interested candidates submit recorded videos or music tracks, and those chosen to compete are judged by a panel that gauges crowd reaction, their ability to read the room, music selection and technical skills. The grand finale is tentatively set for Friday, Jan. 18. “We’ve had over 100 submissions so far — people have submitted their information from Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and even a DJ from India contacted us to participate,” says Craig Slotkin, director of operations and marketing for the Dusk Management Group, the nightclub’s parent company. “We’ve been really impressed with the level of talent that has competed so far. However, when you think about it, it’s not really surprising that there are several talented people out there just waiting for their shot. Many up-and-coming DJs spend hours each night practicing, just waiting for an opportunity like this.” The infiltration of DJs beyond the traditional sense, and in many cases their collaboration with some of the musicians whose songs they electronically remix — or alter from their original versions for artistic purposes or for heightened nightclub appeal — was part of the motivation behind creating the competition.

DJ Sat One

“The DJ world has evolved over the past few years,” says Slotkin. “With the emergence of Electronic Dance Music and the collaboration of DJs with top 40 artists, DJs have become a vital component to modern day music. You see major artists like the Foo Fighters performing alongside Deadmau5 at the 2012 Grammys, and then look at the past year’s major Billboard hits and see collaborations between [Swedish DJ] Avicii and [American rapper] Flo Rida, [Scottish DJ] Calvin Harris and [British musician] Florence Welch — the list goes on. In the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, kids grew up wanting to be rock stars like Mick Jagger, Eddie Van Halen and Kurt Cobain. Now they look up to David Guetta, Tiesto, and our late partner DJ AM. “We have great resident DJs in DJ SatOne, DJ Royale, DJ Mark Stylz and many others already,” adds Slotkin. “We thought it would be a fun idea to explore the underground DJ world and try to find our next resident DJ. [The residency] will include a guarantee of six dates in 2013 to headline a night at Dusk, however we expect there will be a few other participants in the competition that we will invite back for a date in 2013.” Those interested in competing can e-mail info@duskac.com. n

Finding Bargains in January Ringing in the new year with post-holiday sales By Amanda Hopkins • feedback@acweekly.com

W

hile most of us have spent several weeks shopping for holiday gifts, Christmas isn’t the close to the shopping season. The days after Christmas are typically busy ones for shoppers, who head out to the malls to redeem gift cards, secretly exchange holiday gifts, and raid the shelves for sale items. Day-After-Christmas sales are often better than Black Friday sales. With the holiday season over, merchandise is priced anywhere from 20-percent to 90-percent off, depending on the item, as retailers no longer need certain items in stock and want the shelf space for new products. Many retailers also have coupons circulating after the holiday, many of which can be used on clearance items. If you are planning to go shopping after the holidays, here are some things you should look for: Holiday Merchandise — Right after Christmas is the best time to pick up some holiday novelties for next year. Stock up on holiday paper plates and cups to save for next year’s meal. Buy wrapping paper now and store in your closet for next season. Perhaps your lights are getting dim due to the outdoor weather — well, it’s the perfect time to stock up on decorative holiday items such as lights and tree trimmings. Winter Clothing — Winter-wear and clothing is also on sale. While winter has just begun, retail stores are always stocking shelves a season early. After Christmas, you will see long-sleeve shirts, sweaters, coats, and scarves and gloves priced very low. Because it will still be cold for another month or two, it’s a great time to pick up some new clothing, or perhaps buy a discounted coat to gift for someone next year. New Toys — Retailers typically raise the prices of toys right before Christmas, as they want to make money on the products. Right after Christmas, the prices will drop, which makes it a great time to pick up some brand new toys for the next year. You can buy toys to save for next Christmas, or stock up on toys to give as gifts for birthdays throughout the year.

TM

Discounted or Used Items — Consider purchasing items that have been discounted or used. Many retailers will discount items that have damaged boxes due to the delivery process. For example, Best Buy may have a TV clearance because the box was damaged during shipping; however, there may be nothing wrong with the TV. Also, some stores will discount items that have been returned due to less-than perfect packaging. Stores will also give an extra discount on “display” items. If you see an item that you think should be marked down and isn’t, ask

If you are planning to go shopping after the holidays, here are some things you should look for. a sales associate. By pointing out even the smallest flaw in a product, the sales associate will often offer 10-20 percent off that item. In most cases, if you get home and find that the discounted item did not work, you can still return it. Be sure to ask each store’s policy on returning clearance items. Holiday-Themed Foods — Christmas and Hanukkah cookies and cakes need to be moved off the shelves quickly, so retailers slash the prices and stick these treats in the clearance section. While you wouldn’t want to buy a holiday cake to serve at your friend’s birthday party, if the treats are just for your household, why not take advantage of the deals? Be sure to check the expiration dates before purchasing. Of course, not everyone will be heading to the mall to make new purchases. Some customers may be visiting the mall to return gifts or make exchanges. If you are one of those customers, be sure to check the return policies of the stores where you will be making returns. While some stores will take back items without a receipt and give store credit, some retailers will not accept any items without a receipt. To save yourself frustration later, call the store prior to heading to the mall. If you need a receipt to return, contact the gift-giver and use a little white lie to spare his or her feelings. For example, say the shirt is too small and you want to swap for a larger size so that they will get you the receipt. Then, when they ask where your new replacement is, tell the giver there was none left in your size. Whether you are heading out to make new purchases or return old ones, be prepared. While shopping after the holidays is sure to save you a pretty penny, the malls can be very crowded and lines tend to be long. Reward yourself afterwards with a hearty slice of discounted Christmas cake! ■ see more online @

S

omething is happening in Atlantic City’s main casino venues this weekend that — barring another hurricane or some other act of God — will probably never happen again this year. That something is ... nothing. The weekend immediately following New Year’s Eve is generally a dark weekend across the boards. This year is no exception; there isn’t a headline act to be found. So, in the absence of any bold face stars, here are some random entertainment notes and musings for the new year: *** The good news: Metal gods Metallica were obviously pleased with the success of their Orion Music + More concert and lifestyle festival at Bader Field last June, because they’ve already announced this year’s dates: June 8-9. The lineup will be announced in February, which is also when tickets go on sale. The bad news: If you buy tickets to Orion, you’ll need to make one additional purchase: Plane tickets. The event is being held in Detroit. No word on why the event moved, but my guess is the band wants to spread it around the country if it’s going to be an annual event. *** Shows we’d like to see in Atlantic City: There are plenty of shows I’d like to see in Atlantic City this year, but I’ll narrow it down to two. It’s an odd couple, to be sure. One is a no-brainer who would be a guaranteed sell-out at Boardwalk Hall. The other might be considered a stretch until you drill down on it. The no-brainer is Taylor Swift, who has been conspicuous in Atlantic City only by her absence from any venues. It’s not that nobody wants her. She’s turned down huge offers from several properties (you can probably figure out which ones), and Boardwalk Hall never quite seems to find its way onto her tour itinerary. From anyone else, you could shrug your shoulders and think: “Oh well.” But Swift has sand in her shoes. Jersey shore sand. She spent the first 12 summers of her life at her parent’s bay-front home in Stone Harbor. That’s where,

she told me a couple of years ago, she taught herself to play the guitar. Walks on the beach and watching sunsets over the bay inspired the lyrics to her earliest songs. She first sang in front of an audience performing karaoke at Henny’s, a legendary local restaurant. And Swift obviously has fond memories of her Jersey shore childhood: Several years ago, when she was the opening act for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s summer concert tour, Swift took a day-off detour on her tour bus and took her band and crew to the beach in Avalon and then treated them to dinner and ice cream in Stone Harbor. And last year, she and her family surfaced at the Lobster

House restaurant in Cape May one night and then at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House in Avalon the next morning. Next time you plan a tour, Taylor, why not show us some love? (Breakfast at Uncle Bill’s, my treat.) Now here’s the show that might be a stretch — but not really. Someone needs to reach out to comedian Paul Reubens and convince him to bring the Broadway version of The Pee-wee Herman Show to town for an extended run. A week would be a good start. A month would be better. In fact, I think it could easily do business for an entire summer, should some casino be willing to roll the dice. Actually, I don’t think it’s much of a gamble. Reubens created Pee-wee in 1977, when he was a member of The Groundlings improv comedy troupe. He became a huge star in 1981 when he developed The Pee-wee Herman Show, which was presented as an HBO comedy special and then spawned a successful Saturday morning kid’s television series. That all began 32 years ago. Reubens recently tuned 60. And Pee-wee’s core fans from 1981 are probably a few years on either side of Reubens, maybe mid-50s to mid60s. And that makes them an ideal casino demographic. And that makes The Pee-wee Herman Show less of a gamble and more of a sure thing. *** A casino special event I’d like to see: Former Atlantic City mob hitman-turned-stoolie-turnedconvict-turned-author Philip Leonetti hosting a book signing/speech/high-roller party. The man once known as “Crazy Phil” (he hated the nickname), who admits in his autobiography Mafia Prince to killing 10 people during his “career,” has spent the past 20 years living under a new identity in the witness protection program. But he also admits to occasionally slipping into Atlantic City to visit family and friends on the sly, knowing full well that at least one mob faction has a six-figure bounty on his head. Hey, Phil, if you’ve got the cojones to come home without any protection, I’m sure you’d be well-guarded in a room filled with casino highrollers. You come in, take a few pictures, sign a few books, schmooze a few players, bada bing, bada boom, and you’re outta there. And here’s the best part, Phil: You’d get a paycheck from the casino and you wouldn’t even have to get a New Jersey casino license. n

Laughs & Pagentry as ‘Divas DO AC’ Female impersonators are nothing new in the Atlantic City landscape. Bally’s hosted An Evening at La Cage for 11 years and the town has hosted the Miss’d America Pageant, a spoof of the Miss America Pageant featuring cross-dressing gentlemen (which returns in September 2013). However, the town has never hosted a show as enticing and hilarious as Divas DO AC, the show formerly known as Believe - Divas In A Man’s World. While Steve Andrade, who created the show, has moved on, Divas DO AC continues to entertain with top regulars Phyl Craig (Liza Minnelli) and Gary Dee (Joan Rivers). The latter’s impersonation is so dead-on perfect that Rivers has hired him to work events for her. The show also features Michael Ein as Dolly Parton and Eddie Summers as Patti Labelle. Another enticing element is the dancing by four performers — two male, two female — whose choreography, created by Frank Moore (who also stars as the show’s non-diva headliner, Prince), really gives the show a concert atmosphere. This is especially true when Craig does his routine to Minnelli’s show stopping “Cabaret.” The glue that holds the show together is Dee. He keeps the audience in stitches, not to mention dazzling the crowd with multiple gown changes. “Joan” also does a lot of funny improves with the audience, like the night she accused an audience member of looking up her skirt and said, “What you will find there is Pee Wee’s big adventure.” She also claims that there are Monica Lewinsky slots on the casino floor. “They say insert Bill here.” Eddie Summers’ body English is hilarious as he gives us his interpretation of Patti Labelle doing “Lady Marmalade,” “New Attitude” and especially “Over the Rainbow.” Ein’s Dolly Parton is another showstopper, letting us know it is not easy working “9 to 5.” This show delivers the drama and pageantry that becomes a diva most. — Lori Hoffman

Wishful Eating Our annual culinary wish list for 2013 By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

N

o third “Color Curse.” Late 2012 saw the closing — more like thinning of the herd — of two upscale Atlantic City restaurants with color-based titles; Trop’s Quarter lost Russian-themed Red Square and Borgata witnessed the yearend closing of Michael Mina’s astonishing SeaBlue (the restaurant’s last service will be Dec. 31). The former was very good, the latter a riotous shrine to seafood. Both will be missed. Our concern — beyond the larger implication for A.C.’s fine dining market — is the demise of a third primary hue on the color wheel. Probably good that there are no yellow-themed eateries we can think of locally. We sincerely hope that Revel-based Alain Allegretti’s amazing Azure — a shade of blue — the provider of one of this writer’s finest meals in a grand year for all types of food, remains unaffected. Also, some color-coded consolation — as first reported in this space last week — appears on the horizon with Cape May Point’s The Red Store. Opened in 2012 by Deanna Manteca as a breakfast and lunch-only spot, it has now evolved into a nighttime stage for the massive talents of her mercurial chef husband, Lucas. We delighted at the pair’s once-in-a-lifetime BYOB Sea Salt during its five year run in Stone Harbor and eagerly anticipate seeing what they come up with next.

Dungeness crab. Having trumpeted the virtues of langoustine, European spiny lobsters for some while now, 2013 seems a proper time to jump on the back of quality domestic seafood. So I’ve chosen one large enough — glorious, gargantuan Dungeness, metacarcinus magister to science, the state of Oregon’s official crustacean. Underutilized around these parts in favor of locally sourced products,

Women chefs. Professional kitchens are typically male-dominated environments with higher levels of testosterone than most NFL locker rooms. As a result, we’re always gratified seeing more “X” chromosomes involved. Women in kitchens provide a sense of stability along with a decided lack of the swaggering, exaggerated macho posturing often prevalent. Better yet, male cooks behave themselves more professionally when in the presence of a strong, yet feminine, presence. Case in point; during a recent visit to Harrah’s Sammy D’s we pleasantly encountered new assistant chef, and old colleague, Nancy Simons, a veteran of many notable area eateries, including the Tuckahoe Inn and Latz’ By the Bay. Steady as a rock, we hope to see more of her ilk in similar positions of power at area restaurants, soon. However, for A.C.’s ultimate female food experience, check out Pacific Avenuefronting Girasole, where no fewer than four women help run the kitchen.

The glorious, gargantuan Dungeness crab the Pacific behemoths would be a welcome addition to A.C. area menus. Ironically, the very last place we can recall enjoying then was at SeaBlue, also logical given Mina’s San Franciscan roots. In a region where blue claw crab cakes are worshiped with religious devotion, we challenge some daring chef to expand our horizons and create a Dungeness version. Basta, steakhouses! As of December 2012, we counted no fewer than 16 separate Atlantic City outlets in this stuffed-to-thegills — pardon a mixed culinary metaphor — category. Don’t get us wrong, we’ve enjoyed superlative 2012 meals at Borgata’s Old Homestead,

Revel’s American Cut, Golden Nugget’s Vic and Anthony’s, The Taj’s Roberts and Caesar’s Morton’s. Steak houses are absolutely requisite elements to any successful casino dining mix, with several here housing more than one. But having already captured pretty much all the industry’s key players, the air here is rarified, competition robust. No place for a neophyte, Mr. Would-Be-Restauranteur. Like all rules, there might be one exception we would indulge. Should the folks from iconic, 125 year-old, Brooklyn-based Peter Luger’s ever consider opening a southern satellite operation, they would certainly be welcomed with open, hungry arms.

Dark dining. The concept here — already successfully employed in multiple major metros — is a simple one. Customers are served a mystery prix fixe bill of fare in a completely unlit space. Without benefit of sight, one’s smell and taste — the primary senses related to food — become heightened. Submitting yourself to a chef’s whim, omakase (“I’ll leave it to you”) in Japan, makes the experience even more experimental and extemporaneous. While this eccentric concept may not have the traction to become full-time, year round, we’ll bet it would be a huge hit for a casino to introduce as a seasonal specialty room, not unlike Harrah’s Resort’s authentic Brazilian steak house concept Radizio several summers past. n

El Costeño: Fresh and Authentic Mexican

influence, which includes a prolific use of traditionally sweet items in savory cuisine.

Somers Point’s El Costeño may be the first restaurant venture of owner Paulino “Pablo” Eulogio, but he’s certainly no stranger to the kitchen. Eulogio has been a professional chef in the Atlantic City area since arriving 14 years ago from resort community of Puerto Escondido on the Pacific coast of Mexico. With seating for 30, El Costeño’s an intimate establishment that features a diverse menu of standard favorites and unexpected specialties, such as made-to order, par-cooked “seviche” combining flounder, scallops, calamari and shrimp with lime and orange juices, cilantro, onion and hot sauce. Eulogio’s wife and partner, Delfina Villavicencio, creates homemade tortillas, sauces, desserts and a half-dozen luscious “agua frescas” — naturally refreshing beverages that include flavors of watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, tamarind and others. Eulogio describes native foods as being Oaxacan, with a seaside

Opened in late May, El Costeño seems to have gained a nice foothold already. One of the secrets of its sudden success is certainly the concept of small-batch cookery along with an emphasis on spontaneous cuisine. By preparing only limited amounts of certain fairly popular items, like approximately 25 tamales daily, quality control is maintained. The couple would rather sell out of an item when it is fresh and in ideal condition than have anything left at the end of a night/ If you love Mexican, this is the place!

he close of 2012 for Atlantic City was a busy one, offering a positive kick-start to the new year. With several casino-wide parties; performances by the likes of Tiësto, Jane’s Addiction and the Village People (among others); the sold-out Life in Color bash (top two pics) with Steve Aoki at Bader Field — the first of what promoters say will become an annual event due to its success — and local restaurants and taverns jumping, Dec. 31, 2012 was one for the history books.

O

nce again, greetings and salutations — and officially, a very happy and healthy new year to one and all. To those who joined us at the gala New Year’s Eve bash at Valley Forge Casino Resort — oh, what a night. It was reminiscent of the wonderful things that we used to do every New Year’s Eve in Atlantic City. People from all over Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware partied right into the new year. Such a huge success that we will be doing more special events at the Valley Forge Casino. Of course, as you know, in Philly SugarHouse is the spot. We’ll continue to do our live broadcasts from there every Wednesday, and you can listen on KOOL 98.3 from 7-9pm. Again, let’s look forward to a tremendous year together. Remember, the music will always keep us young. Now, let’s ask the Geator. Geator, how did you get your Screen Actors Guild card? I ask because I want to start going on casting calls but many of them require a SAG card, which I don’t have, and you can’t get a card unless you have a part. Thanks for your help. — Jeff Brasil, Stone Mountain, Ga. I got my card years ago when I first did The Monkees TV show. In order to do the show, I had to be a SAG member, and the producer helped me get my card. But there are other ways to become eligible for membership. You can become an extra on a SAG shoot, or try out for TV commercials, possibly with the help of an agent. You can also

get a part in a Web series or even create one yourself, which many young people in the field are now doing. For further information, check with your local SAG office. SAG is now merged with the American Federation of TV and Radio Artists, so when you get your card, you’ll be a member of SAG-AFTRA.

Read your article about Glen Campbell, thanks for the info. Another question: Duane Eddy — did he ever appear in a movie? I have his first record, “Rebel Rouser.” — Joe McGrath, Philly

Yes, he did act in a few, including a Western with George Peppard and Richard Boone, which was one of my favorites, called A Thunder of Drums in 1961. He also had a part in the TV series Have Gun, Will Travel around the same time.

I just found out that Jimmy McCracklin died. I used to go to his Continental Club in San Francisco. Did you ever play any of his songs? — Maria Whitely, San Bruno, Calif.

Absolutely. He had a gigantic hit in 1958, “The Walk,” which was a dance almost like the Stroll that the kids on Bandstand would do. Dick Clark played it nationally and I would play it locally at my record hops. And I always play it whenever I feature dance songs on my Saturday show, “The Geator’s Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues Express,” which you can hear online at xpn.org. n

The NHL may be mired in a hissy fit between players and owners, but the AHL, pro home to hockey stars of the future, graces Boardwalk Hall this winter. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

tasted some sort of past NHL action. “There are a lot of hockey fans in this area [with the Flyers, Devils, Rangers and Islanders all in proximity to A.C.] and at this point, especially with [NHL] hockey not being played, this is a chance for the fans to see a lot of the top prospects and some of the young players who did play in the National Hockey League last year,” says Lou Lamoriello, president and general manager of the New Jersey Devils organization. “It’s a perfect storm, so to speak, with reference to what’s available to the fans and also the players.” Roughly 85 percent of all players who make it to the AHL will eventually compete in the NHL. The AHL is baseball’s equivalent of Class AAA, or the notch right below the majors. “It’s the next step toward the NHL,” says Lamoriello. “There [are] four players on the AHL Devils right now who played in the National Hockey League last year, and they’re only playing here now because they’re allowed to due to their age, our rules structure, and their contract status. That’s the same case for all the other teams. So the caliber is, without question, outstanding.” The Albany Devils play the majority of their games at the Times Union Center but have established an exceptional working relationship in Atlantic City and Boardwalk Hall — the only other arena the team has

utilized for any home games. In 2010 the Devils played five games in the Hall, and the relationship was instrumental in attracting the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic to A.C. last January, which marked the only time in history that game was held outside the confines of an AHL-affiliated arena. The three games scheduled in 2013 are part of a four-game package that began with the Devils playing the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Penguins (the Pittsburgh Penguins AHL affiliate) on Nov. 24. “We’re very pleased to be able to present these mini-series of hockey games to our fans,” says Greg Tesone, general manager of Boardwalk Hall and the Atlantic City Convention Center. “We’ve priced the tickets to be family friendly and have also incorporated promotions and special offers in association with all of the games to encourage turnout. “The New Jersey Devils are a first-class organization, especially in terms of team and player development, and it’s been a pleasure working with them as well as with the management team for the Albany Devils ... Boardwalk Hall is a great venue to host a game of hockey, and fans will be impressed with the quality of play they’ll see from the Albany Devils and their American Hockey League opponents.” The Albany series continues Jan. 13 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (the

Special promos: The first 1,000 fans will receive a free Coca-Cola on Jan. 13. During the first intermission Jan. 13, NBC-TV 40 sports director Pete Thompson will go head-tohead with two contestants on the ice in the “Beat Pete” shootout. A “Chuck a Puck” contest will take place Jan. 13 and 20 with proceeds benefiting the United Way and Shop Rite’s Partners In Caring. “Sweet Deal” drawings will take place during the Feb. 24 game, with chances to win gift certificates for Atlantic City Restaurant Week (March 3-9), Shop Rite gift cards, room packages at Caesars, and tickets to future events at Boardwalk Hall. There will also be a “Mites on Ice” game during intermission Feb. 24 featuring youth from the Art Dorrington Ice Hockey Foundation. T-shirt tosses will take place during timeouts of all games, and the Albany Devils mascot “Devil Dawg” will be available for fan photo opportunities for all games. see more online @

ften sports fans list among their fondest memories having seen superstars before they were superstars, like watching Kobe Bryant finesse Lower Merion High School into a Pennsylvania state title in 1996, or seeing Derek Jeter go three-for-four with the Greensboro Grasshoppers in 1993. Witnessing great athletes like that when they were still honing their skills, and before they walked among the one-percenters, can make for some fine reflection when chewing the fat with the family around the fireplace. The latest NHL lockout, while frustrating to hard-core hockey fans, has become a boon to its premier development league, the AHL, and in a way made a sort of cluster of regionalized all-star teams out of its 30 AHL affiliates. The Albany Devils, who will be playing three regular-season games at Boardwalk Hall’s Art Dorrington Ice Rink starting Jan. 13 (see sidebar for details), have four young players who helped the NHL’s New Jersey Devils reach the Stanley Cup finals last year. All four would certainly have rejoined that team had it not been for the work stoppage, but can still compete with the Albany Devils due to the AHL’s eligibility rules. They include centers Adam Henrique, Jacob Josefson and Stephen Gionta, and defenseman Adam Larsson. Likewise the Adirondack Phantoms, the Philadelphia Flyers’ AHL affiliate who compete in Boardwalk Hall on Jan. 20, will see four of their young stars — centers Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn, left wing Eric Wellwood and defenseman Erik Gustafsson — play in A.C. In all, the Devils and Flyers AHL affiliates have about two dozen young players combined who have

The man who invented ‘mood rock’ comes to Resorts to begin the new year By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

lashback to 1976. A young soldier back from a tour in Vietnam in 1968 wants to start a career as a singer. However, the crooner style he favors is no longer in favor as stars like Sinatra and Bennett are being supplanted in the pop ranks by rock ’n’ roll, Motown and the British Invasion. Struggling to find a record deal, and even after opening gigs with Don Rickles, and signing with Epic records, Peter Lemongello’s career is going nowhere. Instead he comes up with the idea of a genre of music called “mood rock,” selling a self-produced album called Love ’76 strictly through a television ad campaign. Long before the infomercial was officially invented, Lemongello got the ball rolling by bombarding New York area cable channels with his two-minute infomercial. He become a sensation, the first person to sell a million-plus records with a direct marketing TV campaign. He went on to 25 appearances on The Tonight Show, a spot on 60 Minutes and, perhaps the biggest honor of all, being spoofed on Saturday Night Live by Chevy Chase as “Peter Lemon Moodring.” Flash forward to 2013. Peter Lemongello never completely expanded his 15 minutes of fame into sustained stardom, but he continued to sing — at Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden and in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and Branson, Mo. The former native of Jersey City is now based out of Florida and still appears there regularly. Although he hates the cold weather, he is coming to Atlantic City for an extended mid-week engagement at Resorts from Jan. 8 through Feb. 13. Lemongello, who last performed here in 2010, tells Atlantic City Weekly about his direct marketing bid for fame and how he used a clever billboard to break into the Atlantic City market.

find out who I am and I’ll get work. I did it and I was the last one to expect to sell 1.8 million records, more than anybody could have possibly predicted. You did something similar to get a job in Atlantic City involving a billboard. That was more rejection leading to more good fortune. Because my commercials didn’t run in Philadelphia, and many of the people that staffed Atlantic City entertainment divisions were from there, they didn’t know me. I wanted to work in Atlantic City in 1989, but while they seemed interested, nobody wanted to make a deal except for Mark Etess, president of the Taj Mahal, a wonderful man whose family ran Grossinger’s in the Catskills. He knew my work. He died in a helicopter accident right before we were scheduled to make the deal. There I was back to nothing, so I rented a billboard on the Atlantic City Expressway that said “He’s Back. Peter Lemongello Coming Soon.” It was a bluff. But after two months I finally got a bite from Showboat, and sold out the 1,100-seat Mississippi Pavilion for three days.

“There I was back to nothing, so I rented a billboard on the Atlantic City Expressway that said ‘He’s Back. Peter Lemongello Coming Soon.’ It was a bluff.” You helped invent the TV infomercial. Tell us about that. It was unheard of for a singer to do it. I opened for Don Rickles. I signed with Epic Records, but after a year they dropped me and once you’ve had a major label, to try and

get another one is almost impossible. I was watching a TV commercial for Crazy Eddie [an electronics store] and they said they had two stores. How could they afford to be on TV? That’s what I wanted to do. I figured even if the album doesn’t sell, everyone will

How did this current appearance at Resorts in Atlantic City come about? An agent friend of mine, Stephanie Neilson [president of N.A.M.E. Attractions of Brigantine], called and asked if I was available and truthfully it is a busy season for me. But it worked out because most of the shows are mid-week, so I’ll be flying back and forth. I was thrilled because I wanted to come to Atlantic City. I’ll be doing my hit from the Love ’76 album, “Do I Love You,” ‘Sweet Caroline,” “My Way,” “Lady Is A Tramp,” “Sway” and “Save the Last Dance For Me,” among others. It’s a good variety of songs. ■ see more online @

Dazzling ‘Django Unchained’ Tarantino unleashes his usual barrage of joyful exploitation By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

S

ome would say being a Quentin Tarantino fan is a matter of taste, or perhaps in some minds, it’s a matter of being swayed by his utter tastelessness. Put me in Camp Tarantino every day and twice on Sunday. A follow-up to Inglourious Basterds, another film that flips an Italian genre film on its head in hyper-Tarantino fashion, Django Unchained pays homage to the title character of the spaghetti western Django, but then goes full bore Tarantino on his ass, chang-

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

ing the setting to America several years before the Civil War. The title character is a runaway slave (Jamie Foxx) who has information needed by German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Basterds’ Oscar winner Christoph Waltz). This is the reason Schultz offers Django an unheard of proposition: If Django will help him with his bounty hunting for the winter, Schultz will help Django find his wife Bromhilda (Kerry Washington). The trail to the plantation Candyland, where Bromhilda now resides, is littered

with corpses. The bloodletting is eventually so extreme it slides into the realm of cartoon violence, as one laughs at the ridiculous level of blood splatter while feeling its cumulative effect. But there is a point to this display. The violence shown against the slaves is brutal without the cartoon element. When we see a slave whipped, or set upon by wild dogs, or see two black men forced to fight each other to the death for the entertainment of a particularly vile plantation owner, we are reminded that this troubling display is a core element of our true, shameful history. Tarantino whips his version of history into frenzied exploitation unfettered by any sense of decorum, but that doesn’t mean it lacks validity. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the vile plantation owner, Calvin Candie. DiCaprio is obviously having a blast playing a monster barely hidden beneath the sickly sweet talk of a Southern gentleman, seemingly polite and thoughtful about his guests, Django and King Schultz — even as he orders dogs to tear the flesh from a runaway slave, or tells one slave to bash another slave over the head with a hammer. Foxx plays Django as a man who has spent his life as a slave and has learned to keep his rage coiled within, except with a glint in his eye now that he has the power to legally pull the trigger. Waltz’s polite, but deadly, Schultz could be a cousin to his Col. Landa

character from Basterds. Yet the most odious villain in the film is Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen, the slave who runs the house for his owner Candie. Stephen long ago decided to do whatever it took to remain in the good graces of his master, including turning against his race. Like Candie, he has no sense of morality and Jackson conveys that mindset with precision. As with most Tarantino films you will enjoy both his musical score and his tendency to have fun with cameo roles. The music ranges from classic spaghetti western themes to my favorite piece, the gorgeous Jerry Goldsmithpenned theme from the film Under Fire. As for the cameos, you get extra points if you spot Bruce Dern, Tom Wopat, Don Stroud, Russ Tamblyn, Amber Tamblyn, Robert Carradine, Michael Parks and Tarantino’s favorite stuntwoman, Zoe Bell. Tarantino’s blood-soaked ambiance is perfectly in tune with the more serious undercurrents in his spectacularly enjoyable Django Unchained. ■
