Dog Days of Winter at Showboat

Last February, Showboat Atlantic City introduced its unique Pet Stay program, offering a welcome mat to canines of all kinds to special rooms in the property’s new Orleans Tower. as atlantic City’s only pet-friendly casino hotel, Showboat is celebrating the one-year mark of the puppy program with an america’s next Top Dog Model contest. They’re looking for a dog “with the looks and charisma” to be the next face of Pet Stay and from Jan. 9-31, interested dog owners will be able to upload pictures of their pups to Showboat’s Facebook page (all photos must be sent in .jpg format with a maximum of 5 MB per pic). From Jan. 31 to Feb. 13 fans will get to vote “on which dog has the most star power.” Then the top 10 dogs with the most votes will be chosen to compete in Showboat’s “Best in Show” competition, slated for Saturday, March 3, inside the Club Harlem Ballroom. “Showboat has carved out a niche in the region by offering to host our customers in the hotel along with their extended family — their pets,” says Mark Tricano, assistant GM for Showboat Atlantic City. “Pet Stay has been overwhelmingly well-received by our customers and with this Facebook promotion, our ‘fans’ can also take part in this unique experience. Our team is eager to employ this spokes-dog and we look forward to seeing everyone’s creativity come to life.” While fans are encouraged to upload photos of their dogs wearing “cute costumes” or “engaging in interesting activities,” Tricano warns that the usual-suspect pics will not suffice. “We want fans to really get creative, so dogs playing poker just won’t cut it, we’re looking for a pup that screams star,” adds Tricano. Owners are encouraged to put up several pictures to showcase their dog’s true talent, as the entries are limitless. (nOTE: all participating dogs must be under 50 pounds to enter.) The owners of the six finalist dogs will receive a two-night stay at Showboat to compete in the “Best in Show” competition, complimentary breakfast at the Mansion Café and $100 food credit for Scarduzio’s Steak | Sushi | Lounge. The owner of the dog chosen as the next Top Dog Model will receive a grand prize package that “will be sure to make those tails start wagging.” Finally, three judges will determine the “Best in Show” at the event at Showboat on March 3 and you can be one of them! Interested judges (21 and over) can leave a comment at ACWeekly.com (under the online version of this article) explaining why you feel you are qualified to be one of the judges. Include your correct name and e-mail address to have a chance to win. The aCWeekly.com contest runs through Feb. 13. You can also e-mail editor@acweekly.com to enter. For more about Showboat’s Pet Stay program, see this article at acweekly.com. — JS

Winter Writers Getaway at Stockton

The january chill can weigh a little on local residents used to beaches and outdoor activities, so that may make it the perfect time to explore the inner romance of the soul. That’s a high falutin’ way of saying it’s a good time to find the poet inside yourself or maybe even start that novel. Towards that end the richard Stockton College of new jersey has partnered with Murphy Writing Seminars to present the 19th Annual Winter Poetry and Prose Getaway to take place at the historic Seaview resort, jan. 13-16. The writing conference usually attracts more than 200 writers and offers workshops in “Beginning Your Novel,” “Creative Nonfiction,” “Children’s Market,” “Poetry,” “Memoir,” “Song Writing” and more, which just about covers every aspect of being a writer. Among the faculty on hand will be Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Dunn, who will also be the subject of a “Manuscript Retrospective Exhibit” which will open during the conference at the noyes Museum’s Gallery at Seaview. The Getaway will also feature two exciting book launches: Falling Backwards into the World, a limited edition chapbook of Dunn’s poems, and Challenges for the Delusional, a selection of writing prompts from the first 18 years of the Getaway and an anthology of the published poems they have inspired. “[We] work hard to create an ego-free environment which permits writers, beginning and advanced, to take risks without worrying about impressing others or competing,“ says Peter Murphy, conference director. “I find participants do their best writing when the workshops are both challenging and supportive. Many return year after year.” For more information visit wintergetaway.com. — Mike Pritchard

Subtitled “music in vernacular photographs 1880-1955,” this extraordinary offering from the Grammy-Award-winning label Dust to Digital, comes in a hardcover book format, with two CDs bookending the wonderous contents within. Culled from the collection of acclaimed visual and sound artist Steve Roden, 150 “vernacular photos” relating to different facets of early American music — from Ozark string bands and other Appalachian artists to early blues and even the sound of the wind circa 1935 — are presented. We are given little subtext, little context, but the powerful images that accompany the two discs (all tracks are from Roden’s collection of old 78s and other formats of early recordings) tell a ghost story of American music. From the innocent to the strange to the downright spooky, the pictures are each worth an infinite amount of words, and the 51 tracks (some field recordings and sound affects, but mostly old-time songs, including many from the 1920s and as far back as 1914) recall the great Harry Smith anthologies of American folk music. The best holiday gift I received, hands down. This is the stuff that dreams are made of. —Jeff Schwachter

city’s first new casino in nearly nine years remains ahead of schedule, but revel Entertainment is still sticking to a May 15 debut for the sprawling $2.4 billion resort — for now, anyway. “We’re running probably about a month or so ahead of schedule, and that’s good, but we’re not prepared to move the May date yet,” revel president and cEo Kevin Desanctis tells Atlantic City Weekly. “Probably in the next several weeks, we’ll sit down and make a determination. the one thing we don’t want to do is disappoint people and say we’re going to open on a certain date and then open later than that, so we’ll be a little bit cautious about that.” the massive project that sits on 20 acres of prime Boardwalk property at new Jersey Avenue is being heralded as a potential game-changer for Atlantic city, which has been suffering through a four-year decline in gaming revenues and visitors because of increased competition from neighboring states and the economic recession. Just as Borgata raised the bar when it opened Atlantic city’s first true las Vegas-style resort in 2003, revel is hoping it will take the city to the next level by appealing to a market that continues to ignore Atlantic city as a viable leisure destination, Desanctis says. “revel was really designed as a fully integrated destination resort,” he says. “the thought was to appeal to the 40 million people who have, up to this point, not considered Atlantic city an option. there’s about 47 million adults within a six-hour drive of Atlantic city, and only about 15 percent of them currently consider Atlantic city an option.” revel’s goal is to create a property that will meld a gaming model with a resort and a cruise ship model to create an experience unmatched not only in Atlantic city, but anywhere on the East coast. the plan is for the towering resort, which will initially open with 1,070 rooms and suites, to offer guests the opportunity to “pair” experiences, Desanctis says. “cruise ships do something that gaming and lodging models don’t do very well,” he explains. “they pair experiences. We will go from pairing experiences, which means if you are a foodie, or someone who likes fashion, or someone who likes nightclubs ... we would like to pair those experiences for you at our place.” Just about everything at revel is different from the city’s other casino properties. Perhaps most striking will be the entrance for guests arriving to check in. While other Boardwalk casinos have their front doors facing away from the ocean, revel will deliver its guests right to the Boardwalk with a commanding view of the city’s greatest natural resource. “our architect did a terrific job in making sure that revel was built in such a way that it really couldn’t be built anywhere else,” he says. “revel is all about embracing its natural environment. We thought it would be a great idea to deliver the guest right to the ocean as they arrived at our property.” Like us:

revel will consist of various guest experiences or layers, he adds. People looking to kick back and chill out can do so on the “resort” level, which has a two-acres sky garden overlooking the beach and ocean and offering everything from conversation areas with fire pits to cabanas, pools, bars and other amenities. others looking for a more exciting resort experience will find it on the so-called “revelry” level of the property, which is anchored by a two-story center lounge with live entertainment, two nightclubs (one featuring four different “experiences”), a speakeasy, nine restaurants and bars and a 145,000 sq.-ft.casino floor, which Desanctis describes as “very theatrical.” the centerpiece of revel’s entertainment program, though, will be ovation Hall. this multipurpose room is designed to seat up to 5,500 guests and accommodate everything from major concerts and shows to big sporting events. the hall even has two luxury skyboxes, another first for Atlantic city. Desanctis says revel’s design team toured the country looking at various venues before deciding on a model that would be the best fit for revel. And while he wouldn’t tip his hand as to what artists might already be booked, he made it clear the property would be a major player when it comes to presenting the biggest acts. “clearly we want to go after the type of artist that can draw 5,500 people, and when you get into that genre, if you will, there’s probably only about 20 acts that can do that,” he says. But the room can also be sectioned off to seat between 2,500 and 3,000 for other entertainers. After it opens, revel also intends to complete a more intimate 1,000-seat venue for smaller shows. revel is targeting four distinctly different types of guests, Desanctis says: conventions, the leisure guest and both the overnight and dayvisit gaming customer. “We believe that the real up side in the future for Atlantic city is on the group and leisure side,” he says. “We think it’s a huge market, and we think it’s tremendously undeserved. We think that’s a market that requires product, and hopefully we’re bringing the right type of product to that market.” for revel and Atlantic city to be successful, it’s important that the city and other casino properties keep improving the infrastructure and investing in their assets, he adds. “When we come to market, by adding the amenities and assets that this property brings to Atlantic city, combined with what’s already existing, Atlantic city has a new dynamic in place,” he says. n

Poker Lowdown News on tournaments and other action in area casino poker rooms by Mike Pritchard

J

ust like that, New Jersey is on track again to be one of the first states — if not the first state — to offer intra-state online gaming. and that, of course, means online poker. it all stems from a ruling by the u.s. Justice Department last month that online gaming within a state’s borders does not violate the federal ban on internet gambling. that’s a game changer. state sen. raymond lesniak, D-union, who has been behind the drive to bring online gambling to the state, is vowing to have a reworked bill through the state legislature by the end of the week and on Gov. Chris Christie’s desk by next week. his goal is to make New Jersey a national leader in online gaming. “we can be the silicon Valley of internet gaming,” lesniak told the associated Press. “it’s the wave of the future. it’s going to come and we can be in the lead on it.” Of course, lesniak led the last charge to allow intra-state online gaming (which would be run through atlantic City casinos), but that went down in flames in March when Christie vetoed the bill. One of the key reasons for Christie’s veto, however, was his concern that such a move would violate the federal ban. he was also concerned that the bill would allow internet gaming parlors to spring up around the state. a new bill was introduced in august that lesniak says addresses Christie’s objections, including fines of $1,000 per player per day for anyone running an illegal internet betting parlor and a $10,000 fine for advertising such illicit operations. Bettors would have to be New Jersey residents at least 21 years old, and physically be in the state. lesniak is confident that computer programs could ensure no one from out of state could bet. with the justice department’s ruling, you can expect a flurry of activity this week as lesniak attempts to get a new bill through the legislature by Monday, Jan. 9, the last day of the current legislative session. lesniak told the aP that he’s hoping to get the bill approved in committee’s this week and voted on Monday. Meanwhile, robert Griffin, CeO of trump entertainment resorts and president of the Casino association of New Jersey, told the news service that the trade Like us:

group was scheduled to discuss the matter tuesday night. Christie hasn’t commented on the bill. still, nine months after the plan seemed to be dead, the bill could be approved by Monday. there’s still a lot to be played out, such as whether a.C. casinos can and will take advantage, and Nevada is also moving quickly to get its own intra-state gambling up and running, but it’s always impressive when a logjam breaks. who knows? atlantic City casinos could be in a new business by next tuesday. speaking of new business, you have to admire the Borgata for never resting on its laurels. the casino now controls about half of all the poker action in the city, yet it’s just finished a $1 million renovation of its poker room. the room now sports 23 new flat-screen tVs. there’s a lot of downtime in poker and players have long appreciated the tV perks. the room has also been re-carpeted. But the big news is the creation of a new, two-table high-stakes poker room, dubbed the Board room. as the Borgata describes it, the room offers “an extensive variety of games at a minimum buy-in of $10,000; the Boardroom combines dark woods with plush seating, 45 personalized poker lockers, and four 60-inch leD flat-screen tVs, all of which evoke a feeling of prestige in an exclusive surrounding for players to hone their craft under the most thrilling of circumstances.” actually, if you play $10,000 games and need your own poker locker, your craft better be pretty well honed. But it’s a nice touch and a bit of a message to the Golden Nugget, which just opened a new 20-table room, that the Borgata is ready to fight for high-stakes players. and in some other news, the world series of Poker circuit events released some info after the completion of the December event at harrah’s resort. Overall attendance was up more than 25 percent through the first six stops of the circuit over last year with the total prize pool for all events up nearly 33 percent. turnouts for the harrah’s resort event were respectable, with 618 players turning out for the $1,500 championship event. the circuit returns to atlantic City starting March 1 at Caesars with 12 main events and secondary and satellite tournaments. n

United Nations, Modern Economy Has Roots in Atlantic City By Tom Wilk

T

he procession of guests arriving at the Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City in mid-June 1944 resembled an early gathering of the United Nations, a year before the organization was officially founded. Despite the sunny weather and approach of summer, representatives from Great Britain, France, Canada, China, Russia, Mexico and the United States and delegates from around the world representing the allied nations fighting Germany and Japan were all business as they arrived at the 24-story hotel. They had come together for a series of preliminary meetings in preparation for the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference scheduled to get underway in Bretton Woods, N.H., at the beginning of July. Some in attendance represented the leaders of the allied nations – Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin. More than 500 people from 42 nations would participate in some sessions of the Atlantic City conference. British economist John Maynard Keynes was among those credited for Atlantic City’s selection as the preliminary conference site. The 61-year-old Keynes felt the South Jersey location would offer cooler temperatures and a more relaxing atmosphere than Washington, known for the heat and humidity of its summers before the days when air conditioning became commonplace. Since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Atlantic City had been transformed into a military training site. Many of the major hotels were used to house troops, who took part in drills and other exercises at Convention Hall (now Boardwalk Hall). The Claridge’s 400 rooms offered plenty of space for the conference participants and the nearby beach and Boardwalk provided opportunities for participants to meet informally or to relax in between meetings. With allied forces marking their way across France in the aftermath of the D-Day invasion, participants in the Atlantic City meetings began making economic plans for the postwar world. Harry D. White, assistant to the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, served as the director of the sessions. Keynes, one of the leading economic minds of the day, believed that if the war-torn nations of Europe and Asia were to be rebuilt, economic changes would have to be made. This would require free flows of capital and investment among nations. The Atlantic City meetings were held with a minimum of Like us:

fanfare and publicity, perhaps to downplay any disagreements that might arise. Before the first session was held, Charles S. Bell, administrative assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury, announced the State Department in Washington would release all public statements in connection with the conference. Despite its importance, the Atlantic City gathering, which continued over a two-week period until June 30, received minimal coverage in the local press. The meetings laid the foundation and preliminary groundwork for the sessions of the Bretton Woods Conference. Michael Busler, assistant professor of finance at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in Galloway, says the agreements that were reached helped to smooth the way for a transition to a peacetime economy and allow countries to get back on their feet in meaningful way. “The formation of the International Monetary Fund helped developing nations to get capital for growth,” says Busler, a fellow at the William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy at the college. “They also formed what would become known as the World Bank,” he adds. The isolationist attitude that prevailed between the two world wars was giving way to a relationship of interdependence among nations. “The representatives tried to encourage as much trade as possible,” Busler says. The conference also produced agreements to fix exchange rates between countries. “Governments could raise or reduce their currency values no more than 10 percent,” Busler says. The conferences in Atlantic City and New Hampshire required a change in philosophy by nations. “The United States realized that we [couldn’t] be isolationist. We have to work together and trade together [with other countries],” Busler notes. The countries of the world united to work together, economically and politically, with the creation of the United Nations. While the United States decided not to join the League of Nations after World War I, it was in the forefront of the move to form the U.N., with the organization’s headquarters in New York City. The Atlantic City conference wrapped up on June 30 and many of the conference representatives boarded a train in the resort for an all-night ride through New England for the start of the Bretton Woods conference. The momentum generated by the Atlantic City sessions would lead to a successful gathering in New Hampshire. n

ASK THE GEATOR

Those Rascals By Jerry Blavat

New Year’s Eve at the Taj

O

NCE AGAIN, GREETINGS AND

salutations. What can I say about the old year and how we welcomed in the New Year? It began with 3,500 people at the Trump Taj Mahal. Hopes and expectations were high, and by one minute past 12 it all came true. It was the biggest New Year’s bash in memory, with good fortune for everyone and health and happiness to welcome the New Year. We look forward to it with high hopes, jobs, our troops coming home, the economy recovering — and with that attitude, we will make this one of the best years to remember. A special thank you to management, employees, and everyone at the Taj for making the Fire and Ice New Year’s Eve party absolutely spectacular. And of course, thanks to production, editorial, management, and ownership at the Atlantic City Weekly, for The Olympics a great 2011, and to all of you, our readers, for your support. Now, let’s ask the Geator.

I agree. The version you heard me play was by James Ray in 1962. Maxine Brown also re-recorded it in 1965, and if you listen to my show on WXPN you will hear me mix both of them together. The song was written by Rudy Clark, who also wrote “The Shoop Shoop Song” and “Everybody Plays the Fool” and co-wrote “Good Lovin’.” And here’s a trivia question for you. As you know, the Rascals recorded “Good Lovin’” in 1966. Which group had the original version? Answer at end of column. Like us:

Answer to trivia question: The Olympics, who also did “(My Baby Loves the) Western Movies” and the original “Hully Gully,” recorded “Good Lovin’” on the Loma label in 1965, a year before the Rascals made it a No. 1 hit. n

Close, but not true. The real story is that I was doing the dance at Gloucester Park, a fight broke out, and one of the kids in the fight was thrown into the pool. After that, the Gloucester police came and stopped the dances. So it wasn’t the Geator who got splashed, but one of the kids involved in the fight. But I’ve been back to Gloucester many times in my career doing engagements there, and Gloucester has always been a part of my listening audience.

AATTLLAANNTTI ICC CCI ITTYY W WEEEEKKLLYY •• J JAANNUUAARRYY 55 -- 1111, , 22001122

A phenomenon I’ve noticed listening to your show is that I can hear a song dozens of times, and then one day it will be like I’m hearing it for the first time and it knocks me out. Today that song was “If You’ve Got to Make a Fool of Somebody.” Who did that song and what era was it? Great arrangement, too. — R.S., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Can you clear up a question that has plagued me for over 50 years? The story goes that you were doing a dance at Gloucester Park when a bunch of guys picked you up and tossed you into the pool. After that, you vowed never to return to Gloucester. I say it’s not true, but it has been told so many times that it is considered dogma when speaking of Gloucester history. Can you clear this up for me? Thanks. — Jack Bennett, Boynton Beach, Fla.

S MOST OF AMERICA IS NOW already undoubtedly aware, NYCbased Chef Geoffrey Zakarian — culinary lifestyle consultant of Borgata’s sister property The Water Club — was recently named the winner of Food Network’s The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs competition. Beating out a field of cheftestants that included a Murderer’s Row of prestigious personas like Michael Chiarello, Marcus Samuelsson, Zakarian’s Chopped co-host Alex Guarnaschelli and eventually, Elizabeth Faulkner, Zakarian becomes the fourth Iron Chef installed by virtue of an arduous, trial-by-fire system of judgment. (Previous winners were Michael Symon, Marc Forgione and Philly’s own — soon to be prominently featured at the Revel casino resort as well — Jose Garces.) A few of the highlights from his Water Club menu help demonstrate the kind of creativity that helped land Zakarian this new honor. For breakfast, try the lemon pancakes with whipped almond ricotta and spiced syrup, eggs Norway with smoked salmon and chive sabayon or cinnamon-scented McCann’s Irish oatmeal with preserved apricots and maple sugar. From the Immersion Spa bill of fare, health-oriented customers relish his superfoods wrap with quinoa, avocado, arugula, cracked olives and lemon juice. Evening diners may sample from items like slow roast organic chicken sided by a porridge of sweet polenta and

When Marcus Samuelsson — last year’s Top Chef Masters winner — was eliminated, rather early in the competition, he appeared shocked beyond belief. Even sans the benefit of much editing, this was a moment of real drama and gut-wrenching, visceral television. Tell us a little bit more about your reaction to that moment, and that of the other chefs as well.

Zakarian: ‘This was the most difficult and physically demanding thing I’ve ever done.’

Well, it is always true when one of two goes down. It is shocking. They both cooked remarkable dishes. Marcus looked as if he fully believed he had prevailed. The look of realizing one did not prevail was, shall we say, obvious.

Zakarian was kind enough to take a few minutes from his hectic schedule to answer some questions for us over the weekend. Here are a few of his thoughts on becoming an Iron Chef, Atlantic City’s restaurants and, surprisingly, octopus and marshmallow scrambled eggs.

Warner’s Theater

Atlantic City’s Lennox Warner didn’t set out to become an artist, but the city continues to inspire his creative work, some of which will be included in his seventh solo exhibit later this month. By Tamara deMent Photo by Craig Billow

O

n January 24, Atlantic City

sculptor and mixed-media artist Lennox Warner will present his seventh solo art show at the Atlantic Cape Community College Art Gallery in Hamilton Township. The 15-piece exhibit will be showcased until Feb. 17, with a reception on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Since 2004, Warner has been showing his work throughout the South Jersey region and also in Philadelphia and Brooklyn. In addition to being one of the more successful independent artists in the Jersey shore area, he has become a leader in the local world of fine arts, serving a four-year tenure as chairman of the Atlantic City Arts Commission. A committed mixed-media artist, Warner’s creative instincts reach beyond that of any single medium. In the 12-year span that he’s been actively creating art, Warner has gone from working with wood, to clay, to pretty much anything: soda cans, marbles, glass, mirrors, LED TV screens, digital photography, video clips, dollar bills. Nothing is off limits. One of Warner’s specialties is creating memorials. But more specifically, he seeks to provide concrete documentation for figures in American pop culture that have been, in his opinion, “underrepresented” in visual fine art. One of his goals, he says, is to help give voice and perspective to what will become significant historical moments. “I try to do a biography in my artwork of

Since memorials tend to be for public view, what do you expect to happen in the life of a piece that memorializes Amy Winehouse? If you could put it anywhere, where would you put it? I think it’s in the back of my mind — and the back of every artist’s mind — that my art would end up in a museum or somewhere in the public view. In other words, as long as it can be around, as long as any piece of art has ever been around, that’s what I would like.

‘I didn’t set out to be an artist. I set out to be creative. On a personal level, I’m just excited to be a creative person.’ what’s happening right now,” says Warner. “If someone were to see my artwork, they might be able to say, that was the generation, or that was what was happening at [the time].” But Warner, who hails from the West Indies and is “over 60,” has ambitions beyond art. He is currently waiting to come under the employ of the new Revel resort in Atlantic City as a table games supervisor, and is also considering running for office in Atlantic City. As a visually aware person who has lived in the city for 25 years, Warner is interested in seeing the city make more aesthetic choices, especially in terms of creating more public art. For years, the city has been run by leaders who have had “no artistic vision,” says Warner. So, in the next mayoral election, I may “put my hat in the ring.” Below is an interview with the artist. Last time we spoke, in June, you had just finished working out of a 16-foot box truck. Where is your current workspace? I call my apartment my studio. I [currently] have three pieces in a garage in Brooklyn where I store my artwork. Do you frequently work in Brooklyn? Yeah, sometimes I work up there. I do work up there because I have the space. Where as, here [in Atlantic City] I don’t have the space.

I read in a recently published article on you that you didn’t start calling yourself an artist until five years ago. Why is that? I didn’t set out to be an artist. I set out to be creative. On a personal level, I’m just excited to be a creative person. When did you realize that you were a creative person? I was always creative, as far as I can I remember. I was always a daydreamer, always not doing what other people were doing. And even today, I really just don’t buy into what other people are doing. I’m always thinking outside the box. I can’t just buy into what normal people might see. What I’ve really tried to do is create what I see and feel, rather than [what I am told]. And once I imagine it, [I have an urge] to physically create it. When you don’t say you buy into things, do you mean the mainstream, popular opinion, beliefs? No, not necessarily mainstream. For example, television, most people are content [watching the] television. I am not satisfied with it. I want to know what makes that television work, what’s inside of it, how the signals come through it. That’s how my mind works. I can’t just be happy with the picture that’s floating around in it. That’s interesting you mentioned things like TV because of how you’ve used TV screens in your art-

Why are you drawn to that specific function of art? There are a couple of reasons why. As a sculptor, eventually you end up being commissioned to [create a memorial] for someone who passed away. The other thing is, I think that we have to honor people who have recently have passed away. [At such a time] I don’t think they’ve gotten full recognition for what they have done. So when we look back at, say Bob Marley, he’s been memorialized in so many different ways, but you don’t really see it. That’s because times are moving so fast and [people assume] there’s a record of him somewhere. So, I think it’s important to [preserve] the visual aspect of that person. It’s an expensive process to memorialize somebody. Some people can’t put out the money to do it. But most of the people [I’ve chosen] are people that have been underrepresented, like Amy Winehouse. I think she’s underrepresented in visual art.

work. Can you talk a little about your use of different types of media? Going back, I’ve never been committed to a medium. I’m always exploring new media for a simple reason: Everyday new media are created. For example, 100 years ago, the medium of television wasn’t there. And maybe, 500 years ago the medium of glass mirrors may not have been there, at least not on the scale that we have today. There’s no reason to get stuck in a medium in a world that keeps changing. And are these recent pieces? I’m doing a piece commemorating Amy Winehouse, and another one for James Brown. Both involve mirrors. And I’ve imbedded some video screens in them and used other modern materials. These pieces have a story to tell and a story to tell about the life of James Brown, Amy Winehouse. I’ve also done one for Michael Jackson. How do you select figures to memorialize? I like to [focus] on people who have recently passed away because they are still present in people’s minds and they can connect to them for one reason or another. So, you’re hoping that your artwork will represent a collective response to these figures? Absolutely, 100 percent.

Can we talk a little about your upbringing in the West Indies? The thing is I don’t want to be pigeonholed as an ethnic artist. Although it’s very popular today to be an ethnic artist, or a regional artist, I think of myself as a contemporary [visual] artist today, on the American scene. I don’t want to be boxed in by what people want me to be boxed in as. I don’t want to be boxed in by my medium or the time I’m doing my artwork or the region that I’m from. I shouldn’t be regionalized like that. The article I read about you in the ‘Port of Harlem’ seemed to portray you as an ethnic artist. But isn’t the question of region somewhat relevant? Are artists not influenced by their environment? Absolutely. An artist should take things from their environment and put it forward. I guess it depends on the individual or what you’re trying to achieve. I think at this point, I’m kind of documenting history in my artwork. As far as the article in the Port of Harlem, it was a good article and it [mentioned] my hometown, which I left when I was eleven. [But I don’t think it has much influence] on the present work I’m doing. You tend to leave where you’re from behind.

HEADLINERS

As a resident of Atlantic City, do you feel that you are influenced by your surroundings? Absolutely. I think that the casino [environment] is an art unto itself, with the lights and the movement, the energy. I think that affects my art, [similar to] the way cities influenced jazz. I think that compression — the mesh of people — that sort of thing brings out art within you. n

ast February, Gov. Chris Christie signed — in the atrium of the soon-to-be-open revel mega-casino — legislation that retooled the Casino reinvestment Development authority (CrDa) and established the atlantic City tourism District. the tourism District’s primary objective is to “promote tourism and make atlantic City a safer, more attractive place to visit,” and make quality-of-life improvements to a.C.’s residential, commercial, cultural and entertainment landscape. it would become the CrDa’s responsibility to oversee all planning and zoning issues within the district, and the authority appointed a nine-person advisory commission (comprised largely of atlantic City residents along with representatives of the city, county, casino industry and local Chamber of Commerce) to help keep a unified focus on key tourism District issues. additionally, it was mandated that all of the CrDa’s assets and revenues — unless otherwise earmarked by a pre-binding contract — shall he utilized for purposes of the tourism District and atlantic City community development. in years past, CrDa funds (which are garnered from a percentage of each casino gross gaming revenue annually) have been diverted to other projects throughout the state. the legislation signed by Gov. Christie also mandated that a tourism District Master Plan be finalized by Feb. 1 of 2012 — one year from the date he signed the legislation — and the CrDa retained international real estate firm Jones Lang Lasalle to assist it in achieving that goal. Part of the strategy Jones Lang Lasalle is taking in finalizing the plan is seeking the public’s input. recently the CrDa authorized launch of a Web site called RevitalizeAC.com
