Atlantic City Weekly’s Guide to Area Happy Hours

A Wonderful Woman Is Gone L By Pinky Kravitz

AST WEEKEND REDENIA GILLIAM-MOSEE left our world. She was one of the nicest, most charming women I have ever had the privilege to know. She started her working career as a chambermaid in a Boardwalk hotel and finished her working career as the business administrator of Atlantic City. In between, Redenia spent over 25 years working for Bally’s Hotel Casino and Caesars Entertainment. She was the first African-American woman to become a senior vice president in a casino hotel. She was also the first woman to become the president of the Greater Atlantic City Regional Chamber of Commerce. When she went to work for Bally’s, she let it be known that she would be working diligently to improve Atlantic City. One of her first achievements was to have Bally’s provide the funding for the Jacob’s Terrace housing development on Baltic Avenue. It gave many people their first opportunity to own a home. Her greatest achievement was taking the underdeveloped Atlantic City Boys and Girls Club and making it into one of the finest in the nation. She asked me to be the MC of their first fundraising event that featured the appearance of Willie Mays, a close friend of Redenia. People came from around the nation to be a part of that event and to be able to have their picture taken with Willie. It raised a considerable amount of money and was continued for several years. At the same time, she was working diligently to get the Chamber of Commerce to be super active in the city. She worked her way through the chairs and became one of their outstanding presidents. She loved to play golf and take pictures. Redenia lived in a house at Maryland and Baltic avenues. She completely refurbished its exterior and interior and made it into a model home. She never forgot her roots and her church. Proudly she would tell us of the varied activities of the church and the wonderful people with whom she was constantly in contact. The people of the community had grown to love, admire and respect this wonderful woman. Her love affair with her husband Israel Mosee, who passed away in 2003 led to one of the most beautiful weddings one could ever attend. She always made sure to let people know that her name was Redenia Gilliam-Mosee. Whenever there was anything good taking place in the community, Redenia would be there aiding and assisting in every way possible. I guess by now you can tell my feelings for Redenia. I, and all those who had the privilege of knowing or meeting her, will never forget her. Without a doubt, she is now working in Heaven and looking out for us. Thank you Lord for giving me the honor of being a friend of this magnificent woman. I would urge that the Atlantic City Boys and Girls Club be renamed the Redenia Gilliam-Mosee Boys and Girls Club so that in the years to come when people ask for whom the club was named, they would tell the many wonderful stories about Redenia Gilliam-Mosee.

One Atlantic is Open

One Atlantic, a dramatic, upscale venue for extraordinary events, is officially open. The venue stands atop The

Pier Shops at Caesars, and is the area’s only over-water, independent (non-casino) event space. One Atlantic was the only major opening in Atlantic City in 2009, and stands as a bright spot for the region’s events business leading into this year. It has already booked more than 60 events for this year, a testament to the excitement and interest it is already drawing among meeting planners, newlyweds-to-be and others organizing events such as bar and bat mitzvahs. Gourmet custom catering will include special menus for kosher, international, and vegetarian preferences, and is complemented by the services of an award-winning mixologist. The contemporary design of the venue features 10,000 feet of integrated event space and a 2,000-foot outdoor terrace. This flexibility allows for a broad range of setups accommodating everything from cocktail receptions for 1,000person banquets to intimate gatherings for as few as 20. It is nice to know that Atlantic City finally has a quality wedding chapel out over the ocean to take advantage of the magnificent views of our skyline and the Atlantic Ocean thanks to this brand-new facility.

A Story Worth Sharing

This column has never repeated any funny stories I felt were worthy of this space. However one such a story came to me from a friend, and after testing it with many people of varied ways and walks of life, I have decided that you should enjoy it. I read it on my radio show recently and unfortunately no one laughed. I was upset, but I finally realized that there was no one live around for me to hear laughing. I did have a couple stop me and tell me how much they enjoyed it. So, here it is: Four Catholic men and a Catholic woman were having coffee. The first Catholic man tells his friends, “My son is a priest and when he walks into a room everyone calls him Father. The second Catholic man chirps, “My son is a Bishop. When he walks into a room people call him Your Grace. The third Catholic gent said, “My son is a Cardinal. When he enters a room everyone says, Your Emminence. The fourth Catholic man then says, “My son is the Pope. When he walks into a room people call him “Your Holiness. Since the lone Catholic woman was sipping her coffee and silent, the four men gave her a subtle “Well? to which she replied, “I have a daughter who’s slim, tall, 38-D breasts, 24-inch waist and 34-inch hips. When she walks into a room people say, “Oh My God! It took all these years to find a story I thought worthy of being here, so please let me know — did you smile or laugh? n

The Inside Scoop

Each year the mayor of Atlantic City gives a state of the city address before city council. A lot of politicos are in attendance and it usually gets a little press. Ho hum. But if you want to know what’s really on Mayor Lorenzo Langford’s mind, insiders know the place to be is the Midtown Business and Citizen’s Association’s New Year’s Kickoff Luncheon at noon Thursday, Jan. 14, at Resorts. “For the last 15 years or so, this meeting has really been the unofficial state of the city address,” says Gary Hill, spokesman or the association. “This is when the mayor gives us his plans and vision for the coming year. And considering that Mayor Langford is starting a new term, we expect there will also be some of his senior advisors and cabinet members there as well.” Langford has also recently been holding meetings with a number of business and community leaders to discuss Atlantic City’s future, and to plot a strategy for the resort. “Those have largely been private meetings,” Hill says. “This will be one of the first public-forum events he’ll be speaking at since those meetings and we’re hoping he’ll give us some insight into what is being discussed. This is a meeting before much of the city’s business community and many civic groups as well.” The MBCA also welcomes a new sponsor this year, Fisherman’s Energy, which has proposed building a wind farm to generate electricity off the Atlantic City coast. “They also may have some exciting news for us, so we expect it to be a great event,” Hill says. The luncheon costs $40 and RSVPs should be made by Friday Jan. 8. Visit mbcanj. com for information. — Mike Pritchard

Magic Hat Howl

This Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 9-10, the Wildwoods Convention Center (WCC) will help uphold the mission statement of the Special Olympics, which is to provide athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities while giving them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy and friendship. The Special Olympics of N.J. (SONJ) state floor hockey tournament will take place at the WCC starting 9am both days, and will include teams from across the state that qualified for the tournament through league competition in Nov. and Dec. Admission is free and the event is open to the public. The community is encouraged to come out and cheer on the athletes, and support the hundreds of coaches, chaperones and volunteers who dedicate their time to make this happen. Awards will be given as competition is completed in each division. “Whether your support is financial or through volunteerism, or simply by encouraging others to open their hearts and minds to people with intellectual disabilities, you’ve given the gifts of joy, hope and acceptance to our athletes, and for that we thank you,” says SONJ president Marc Edenzon. — Ray Schweibert

Sure, there may have been some griping that someone didn’t get their two rounds of drinks, or that cigarette smoke was bothering them or that they were seated in the back of the room when they felt they d eserved a better seat — all valid complaints. But as far as turning their chair sideways instead of their bodies? I never heard it. Now, here’s what I think could (and should) happen: One day, some bright, young, freshly minted MBA whose expertise is in marketing and entertainment is going to be hired by a casino. He or she will come up with a scathingly brilliant idea that the casino go retro in its showroom by taking out the rows of chairs and replacing them with … tables. Maybe even throw in some banquette seating for the better bettors. Since this person will be way to young to have actually been in an old-world casino nightclub, they’ll rely on pictures or old Sinatra movies to provide them with a model of what the joint should look like. Perhaps they’ll take it a step further and hire sexy young women and men, put them in sexy outfits and actually have them take drink orders and then deliver the drinks to the table. In real glasses, too, not in plastic cups. And taking it still another step forward, the marketing genius will suggest having photographers roam the showroom asking guests if they’d like to remember the moment forever by having their picture taken, with the promise that the print will be waiting for them when the show ends. (True, smart phones can accomplish the same thing, but they’re no match for the quality of a real camera.) One of the keys to the long-term survival and profitability of the local casinos is to offer guests and visitors an experience they can’t get someplace else. Pretty soon, there’ll be slot machines in Wawas and 711s, so that won’t exactly be a novelty. But catching a show in a “retro” nightclub, with beverage service and souvenir photos? Maybe even serve a meal and call it a “dinner show?” At the very least, it’s worth a shot. n

A C W E E K LY. C O M / M O N T H 0 0 , 2 0 0 9

CAN’T PREDICT WHEN OR IF IT will happen — probably not for a few years, at the very least — but I’m hoping that casino entertainment will go back to the future. I don’t mean the acts the casinos will present. I’m talking about the venues they’ll present them in. About 10 years ago, the Tropicana became the first A.C. casino to reconfigure its showroom. They removed the tables and chairs and replaced them with theater-style seating. In doing so, they upped the capacity from about 1,800 to around 2,200. It didn’t take long for the trend to spread. Harrah’s, which had done quite nicely with its 850-seat Broadway by the Bay showroom, gutted the room and created The Concert Venue, a theater with a capacity of about 1,235 seats. Caesars followed suit, pouring about $15 million into the 1,166-seat Circus Maximus Theater and turning it into a 1,500-seat room. Casinos that didn’t go to the expense of reconstructing their showrooms still bought into the program and simply replaced the traditional tables and chairs with theater-style seating. Okay, you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that capacity was the issue here. It was just simple mathematics; the more people they can fit into a showroom, the more money they’ll generate at the box office and in the casino after the show. But that didn’t stop the casino spinmeisters from claiming this was all done in the name of comfort. When it became obvious this showroom retrofitting was becoming a trend, one casino vice president actually told me —- with a straight face — the new arrangements had nothing to do with increasing capacity but were to address complaints from customers. “We got tired of customers bitching that they had to turn their chairs on an angle to see the stage,” he said. “They complained that it was very uncomfortable.” Then he tried to sell me the Brooklyn Bridge. I wasn’t buying the explanation then, and I won’t buy it today, either. In the 31 years that I’ve been covering this beat — and after seeing well over 6,000 shows — I can honestly say I never heard one person complain or ask for a refund because they had to adjust their seat in order to see Frank Sinatra or Sammy Davis, Jr. or any of the thousands of the acts that have played Atlantic City’s casinos since 1978. For the most part, they were just thrilled to be sharing the same air as the artists.

WHITNEY’S RADAR

New Year, New Start By Whitney Ullman

T’S A NEW YEAR AND IT’S A NEW me! The ‘F’ Word will now be called Whitney’s Radar, and boy am I excited. As a self-proclaimed “busy bee,” I find that many things come into my radar and I can’t wait to write about them. Whether it’s advice on life, great people to check out or any cool happenings in the area, I want to share it all with you. To illustrate my point, and while I really wanted to write about something positive, I believe that everything happens for a reason and there were at least three instances where touchy subjects came into my radar this past week that I feel compelled to talk about. I was recently chatting with a friend regarding a mutual acquaintance we’ll call “Samantha” who has been “M.I.A.” for a while, and is not returning calls to any of her friends. Through our chat I found out that Samantha may be in an abusive relationship, but my friend and I are not 100 percent sure. There are signs that her husband has issues and can possibly be mentally and physically abusive, but there is no hard evidence — at least based on what I’ve been told. The interesting part is that the friend I was talking to said that she absolutely adores Samantha and feels bad for her. At that moment, I thought, “How can we say we adore someone, yet knowingly not do anything if they are in a bad situation?” My first reaction was to think, “What kind of friend are you?” But then I thought about how people in general tend to not want to get involved, or may be too scared to do so and try not to think about it. Let’s face it, we all have our own problems and to get involved with someone else’s may be too much to handle. But I’m sorry, that is totally unacceptable for me. I hardly know Samantha and I want to get involved. I want to make sure she is OK. It’s like that NBC Dateline episode where actors were put in a park to play an abusive couple, and we wait and watch to see if anyone stops to help. Hardly anyone does! I am a big proponent of my own safety first, but nowadays you can help someone anonymously in certain cases. To further illustrate, this past week I had two different conversations with friends from two walks of life. They both have good friends who used a mail-order bride service, and both have similar stories about the friends who use this service having personalities that scream “warning.” These men

have a lot of issues and, according to their friends, may be mistreating their women. Yet no one says anything to them. I find this to be ridiculous! How do we maintain friendships with people who are abusive and talk about it like it’s funny, or just shrug it off like it’s nothing serious? When someone is being abused they may not know it. If we see it, I feel it is our duty to say something or at least help steer the people being abused in the right direction for help. How can we go on knowing that someone may be getting tortured, raped or even be abused physically, mentally and/or sexually? Check out these alarming statistics — stanford. edu/group/svab/DV_stats.pdf — derived from a Stanford University study. I didn’t write this article to be a downer. I just wanted to tell you that being abused is not uncommon, and if you know someone who is in need of help, please offer it in any way you can! There are many resources here in Atlantic County including the Atlantic County Women’s Center (acwc.org). They provide shelter, counseling and other services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. They also operate the Child Care Network and Home To Work programs. For general information you can contact 601-9925, but for a Violence Intervention Program 24-hour hotline, call 800-286-4184. No one deserves to be abused and if you are, it is common to feel that it is your fault. Please know that it is not, and if you are being abused you need to take action now. If you need help finding resources, my e-mail is below, and I will do my best to help steer you in the right direction. Happy reading everyone and remember to ask yourself “Am I on Whitney’s Radar?” n

but not limited to its trademark Alaskan king and Dungeness crabs. But when area athletics excel — such as the Phillies’ back-to-back berths in the World Series, Villanova basketball reaching the NCAA Final Four, the Eagles and/or Giants gaining berths in the NFL playoffs — it’s an added bonanza for C&P’s. “We get a lot of Giants fans in here, too,” says Wilkerson. “Being an Eagles fan I’m never disappointed when the Giants don’t make the playoffs [such as this year], but from a business perspective I always hope they do. If so, we’d be packed for the Giants’ playoff run and also for the Eagles’. We had an even bigger crowd in here [Dec. 27] than usual when Brian Dawkins [now with Denver] was back in town for the first time since he left the Eagles. It’s like that any time something unique or historic takes place, like when Cliff Lee and Pedro Martinez pitched their first games for the Phillies, when [Allen] Iverson returned to the Sixers, when [the Phillies’ Roy] Halladay pitches his first game this spring — people want to go somewhere to watch special events, and we do a lot to promote those kinds of things. “March Madness in general is huge for us because it lasts so long and you get so many days out of it,” adds Wilkerson. “Last year was great because we had Temple and Villanova both in it, then right after that it’s spring training and baseball. When not a whole lot of sports action is going on we run special events like Bike Night [every Thursday during the summer, which includes visits by the Bud Light Girls and Mike’s Famous Powersports Girls, a live radio broadcast on The Ace 102.7, drawings for motorcycle giveaways and more]. We always try to do something exciting to keep people coming in.” n

N THE SAME WAY A COUPLE of South Philadelphia grocers started what would become ACME supermarkets, or a Maine outdoorsman named L.L. Bean founded what morphed into one of the largest mailorder catalogs in the country, Peter and Henrietta (Chickie) Ciarrocchi established a small Northeast Philly restaurant in 1977 that became an institution synonymous with the term “sports bar.” Chickie’s and Pete’s Crab House & Sports Bar recently opened its sixth site — not including several small “satellite” locales in stadiums and airports — in the Parx casino in southeastern Pa. last month. Its fifth full-sized expansion (and second in N.J. after Bordentown) opened in 2007 at the English Creek Shopping Center in Egg Harbor Township, and quickly became a popular gathering place not just among sports fans but patrons of all sorts. Over the years the organization’s accolades included being rated the top sports bar on the East Coast by ESPN, and last year the EHT site was voted best sports bar in the inaugural AC Weekly Nightlife Awards — a title it hopes to defend later this month (Thursday, Jan. 21, at Boogie Nights in Resorts). Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek broadcast his final 103.7 The Shark radio show of the season from the EHT site on Monday night, Jan 4 — between the birds’ second and third showdowns with the Cowboys — but there will be plenty of action going on inside C&P’s well beyond the end of the NFL playoffs. “We always have something going on or something coming up,” says EHT general manager Chris Wilkerson. “Our biggest thing is promoting what’s already happening, and taking advantage of what’s already there. After the Super Bowl we’ll look forward to March Madness [the NCAA basketball tournament], the NHL and NBA playoffs — there’s always something going on that generates a steady influx of fans, which I think is what sets us apart from most places. Isabella’s of Ventnor delivers some authentic dishes from the southern reaches of Mexico By Frank Gabriel

ELEBRITY CHEF/AUTHOR Anthony Bourdain, he of New York Times bestselling book Kitchen Confidential and TV show No Reservations fame, has always extolled the unique talents of cooks from the Oaxaca (say Wa-ha-ka) state, deep the furthest reaches of southern Mexico. With such an esteemed, notoriously hard-to-please source providing such props, we should consider ourselves fortunate that Absecon Island’s latest ethnic restaurant comes directly from a little Oaxacan hamlet called Putla. Putla is the original hometown of restaurateurs Delfino and Lupe Terronen, owner/operators of Isabella’s at 4 S. Portland Ave. in Ventnor. Open since October 2008, Isabella’s — named for the couple’s collegiate daughter — provides a full-service facility that offers traditional breakfast and lunch fare. Since last April they’ve added a diverse array of Mexican and Latino specialties and come up with a lengthy, exciting dinner menu. The family possesses an extensive culinary background, beginning with Lupe’s grandmother, herself the owner of an eatery in Putla. Delfino specifically mentions that their version of classic mole sauce derives from Lupe’s abuelita, a Mexican term of endearment meaning “little grand mom” and great news for diners at Isabella’s. General dining rule of thumb: if you are eating the same food someone’s grandmother prepared for him or her, you can almost always expect that it’s going

Enjoying some of the delicious dishes

to be a very special experience. Mole is complex blend used with an entrée of enchiladas, corn tortillas stuffed with chicken and ladled with the laborious, dark brown concoction usually involving chiles, cinnamon, cumin and often bittersweet chocolate. As for Delfino, he worked locally at Ventura’s Greenhouse in Margate and Jo-Jo’s in Pleasantville for the last decade-and-a-half prior to launching his own venture. Asked about other menu favorites recommended by his customers, he mentions the empanadas, a trio of golden tortillas stuffed with either chicken or

beef and fried. Traditional fajitas, burritos and tacos are all available with an array of proteins. The latter two further offer an Isabella’s house formula made from steak, pork and ham combined with onions, green bell peppers and cheese. Manning the kitchen here is yet another family member, brother-in-law Pedro Gonzalez, a former staffer of Margate’s prestigious Steve and Cookie’s By the Bay. Asked about their kitchen philosophy, Delfino provides a simple, direct answer, telling us that Isabella’s food is “very authentic, all homemade products.” Like the house-made pork shoulder that winds

it’s way through their menu, cooked low and slow to produce tender, fall-off-thebone meat. Or the tostadas de pollo (also known as “tinga”) a fried tortilla with chicken, beans, sour cream, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. Served three to an order, like the empanadas appetizer, these comprise a full entrée-size dish. Perhaps the biggest surprise for those whose experience with Mexican cuisine is limited — call it Taco Bell Syndrome — will be just how large a role the fruits of the sea play on the bill of fare. Isabella’s serves 10 different fish and crustacean-based delights, ranging from caldo de camaron, a soup of sautéed shrimp, carrot and potato to guachinango a la Veracruzana. That dish, another regional item native to southern Mexico, is a pan-fried fish, topped with spicy red sauce and a variety of olives, served with rice and salad. Cost-conscious diners will take note that despite large portions, no dollar amount on the menu — excepting a pair of market-priced fishes — reaches above sixteen bucks. We’re predicting great stuff from this 60-seat, off-the-beaten path spot. The location has had a succession of management over the last 20 years but now seems to have found a perfect fit for the demographic diversity of Ventnor’s populace and landscape. Maybe the next time Monsieur Bourdain deigns to visit our city, we’ll even offer to buy him dinner at Isabella’s. n E-mail Frank Gabriel at fgabriel@acweekly.com see more online @

Dwight Yoakam

HILLBILLY

Where: Caesars Circus Maximus When: Friday, Jan. 8, 9pm How Much: $45, $55, $75

By Lori Hoffman

WHAT A CHARACTER

DELUXE

While Dwight Yoakam delivers a sexy ambiance as a country music icon, on movie screens he has found his niche as a character actor, often in dark roles although he has also made a few comic contributions. He was an abusive father, really scary in Sling Blade (1996) opposite Billy Bob Thornton. He was also a villain, a burglar with a mean streak, in Panic Room (2002) starring Jodie Foster and Forrest Whitaker. Yoakam revealed his comedic side as a wacky doc helping to keep Jason Statham alive in Crank (2006) and the sequel Crank: High Voltage (2009). He has also directed and starred in an offbeat western, South of Heaven, West of Hell (2000) and produced a film with his friend

Singer-actor Dwight Yoakam brings his unique twist on rockabilly twang to Caesars

S

INGER-SONGWRITER DWIGHT Yoakam, who headlines at Caesars this Friday, was the original cowpunk crooner, a visionary who never was a Nashville insider. After he was rejected by the Nashville set in the early 1980s, during one of Music City’s bland pop periods, he went to California, following the trail blazed by his musical heroes Merle Haggard and Buck Owens and developed his own unique twist on the Bakersfield sound of roadhouse rockabilly and wailing laments about pain and heartache.

his signature spins with the guitar neck flying upward. It all adds up to the Dwight shuffle. He also moonlights as an actor (see sidebar), including Sling Blade. With all his multiple interests, Yoakam is an interesting interview but sometimes he is so eager to go flying off down a side conversation, it is hard to corral his thoughts. What follows is my attempt to do just that, after chatting with him this week about his upcoming show.

that at various times.

How do you define your sound, or do you even like to label it? It sounds trite to say I can’t label what I do. Certainly it’s country music but I know it has transcended that at various times. I’ve been writing of lot of things recently for an upcoming album that I hope to do this year that is beyond [the country] boundary.

Of course Nashville had to pay attention when he developed an alt-country following that eventually earned him multi-platinum success, 21 Grammy nominations (with a couple of wins) and a string of hit albums (Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc. Etc., Hillbilly Deluxe, This Time) and singles “Honky Tonk Man,” Little Ways,” “Little Sister,” “A Thousand Miles From Nowhere” and “It Only Hurts When I Cry.” He also had a way with remakes, doing “Streets of Bakersfield” with Owens, Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and Presley’s “Suspicious Minds.” On stage he has developed a persona that features his hat brim over his eyes, boots, tight pants and a mash-up of Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry-style moves plus

Of course today it is such a crapshoot getting new music out to the public. Nobody really knows what the delivery platform is anymore for recordings. Terrestrial radio has certainly changed. It is still listened to but it doesn’t seem to be the dominant delivery mechanism. Television viewing might be, whether its traditional television, the Internet, satellite, smart phones … I do think streaming is going to be the future of accessing music. I started to say ‘owning music,’ but Generation Z from research I’ve read, they don’t even want to own iPods, they don’t want to carry a library on an iPod, which I love. I have a huge iPod library. I don’t think they want to hold onto anything. They want a playlist, streaming on demand.

Certainly it’s country music

but I know it has transcended

It’s like the film business is turning, on demand viewing. CDs will go the way of 12-inch vinyl. Weirdly, all this [technical] minutiae is effecting how you create. We have to forget about it. That’s what I started doing last year to focus on the excitement of music. How did the acting roles come about? I did theater growing up, nothing sophisticated, high school, but then I set it aside. I did a play when I first got to California and realized that actors are at the mercy of opportunity, that it’s a struggle, so I focused on my first love, my music. Yet you’ve been in some terrific films, like Sling Blade. Yes, it’s wonderful to work in films. It’s another means of expression and I really enjoy it. I’m fortunate to be able to do both. What should we expect from you show in A.C.? We’re not really touring but I felt very fortunate to get offers [to play] given the situation the country is in, the world is in economically. So these shows are about forgetting the struggle the last 18 months at least for that hour and a half or two hours we’re playing. Having fun — that is what the show is about, the band literally having as much fun as we can and hopefully taking the audience with us. n

Sling Blade Billy Bob Thornton, Patrick Swayze, Charlize Theron and Natasha Richardson, Waking Up In Reno (2002). Yoakam says about filmmaking, “It’s a always a minor miracle that an independent film gets made because it’s so collaborative and so vulnerable to collapse at the weakest point of the collaboration.” He has two films in the can he hopes get released. The first is Last Rites of Ransom Pride. “It’s kind of a baroque western” (with Lizzy Caplan, Kris Kristofferson, Scott Speedman and Cote de Pablo from NCIS). The other is Provinces of Night. “Val Kilmer and I play brothers; it’s an interesting family drama. Hillary Duff and Kris Kristofferson are also in it.”

HE LAST TIME GREGG ALLMAN visited Atlantic City he tried his hand at the gaming tables. Now you might envision the rock ‘n’ roll legend plunking down fists full of C-notes on high-stakes poker, blackjack or craps, but no. As a gambler he’s cautious, conservative, knows his limitations and avoids being reckless. “I’ve always had a certain order, a certain plan,” Allman tells AC Weekly in a phone conversation. “I’ll take $300 with me and if I lose that I go back to my room. The last time I won $2,200, and $2,700 the time before that. I’ll tell ya, I can play the hell out of roulette.” There’s an amiable tone to his southern accent when he says all this. He laughs as he recounts watching little old ladies playing penny slots in the casinos. “How much can they win if they hit the jackpot playing penny slots? Maybe five hundred dollars?” Somehow this does not sound like a person whose monumental contributions to the world of music once seemed at risk of being eclipsed by inauspicious appearances in the tabloids. “Gambling’s not really a vice that ever got me,” he says. “Alcohol got me. Cocaine got me. But they finally let me go.” It’s been over 13 years since Allman — who visits The Concert Venue at Harrah’s on Saturday night, Jan. 9, with his solo band — was a substance abuser, and now over 40 years since he and his brother Duane co-founded the group that kicked off the so-called “Southern rock movement” in 1969, the Allman Brothers Band. Duane Allman died tragically in a motorcycle crash at age 24 in 1971, and last year the Allman Brothers Band dedicated a string of sold-out shows to him on a 40th anniversary tour that included appearances by music luminaries Levon Helm, Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton and others. Despite his short life, Duane Allman is considered one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. To perhaps a slightly lesser degree, former Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts (who penned the hits “Rambling Man” and “Blue Sky”) can also lay claim to that distinction. While the Brothers have about a half dozen gigs lined up for 2010, Gregg Allman is pouring most of his ener-

I imagine that, as successful as you’ve been as a musician, you’re touring primarily out of love for the music more than a need for the income. I love it more every day. I love it just as much as I did when I was 17, and even more now since I’ve been sober. I haven’t drank for 13½ years. I haven’t smoked, drank, snorted — nothing. I don’t even smoke pot anymore. I mean, I’m not being judgmental and I’m not putting down reefer. In fact I think they should go ahead and legalize it. But you never know, if you’re a singer, what a world of good it does for your singing pipes until you’re rid of it — and I’m talking about smoking in general, even cigarettes. I stopped smoking about four months before I went to cut this record, and the singing part was effortless. There wasn’t a note I reached for that I didn’t get. Of course, you know what notes not to reach for too. A man needs to know his limits.

gies into his solo band this year, which includes keyboardist Bruce Katz, drummer Steve Potts, bassist Jerry Jemmott, saxophonist Jay Collins, guitarist Scott Sharrard and percussionist Floyd Miles. Allman supplements his soulful voice by playing guitar and occasional Hammond B3 organ. Along with the title track from his 1987 gold-selling solo record I’m No Angel, the band will perform several of the hits Gregg Allman penned for the Brothers such as “Whipping Post,” “Sweet Melissa,” “Midnight Rider” and others. How long have you been touring with your current band? We’ve been together about three years. We just finished a brand-new record. There’s 14 songs on it that we recorded in 11 days — we just got into a groove and ripped it on out. If I get the OK in writing from Allstate Insurance, it’ll be called You’re in Good Hands with Allman. You need approval since you’re putting a twist on their slogan? Absolutely, if you don’t want to spend the rest of your life in court. There’s a

Garden State

Decade’s Best Movies 2000-2009 offered epic fantasy, fascinating indies and great dramas By Lori Hoffman

M

O V I E FA N AT I C S L O V E T O have fun putting together lists, especially when a decade comes to a close. Here, in alphabetical order, are the films from 2000-2009 that were the best of the best, a mix of epics, indie favorites and international cinema. Avatar (2009) The Bourne Identity (2002) Children of Men (2006) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) Far From Heaven (2002) Garden State (2004) An Inconvenient Truth (2006) Kill Bill, Vol. 1 and II (2003, 2004) The Lives of Others (2006) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001, 2002, 2003) Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) Memento (2003) Million Dollar Baby (2006) The Station Agent (2003)

James Cameron’s awesome blend of breakthrough technology and emotionally satisfying storytelling in Avatar lived up to my expectations. It’s a spectacular flight of fancy. Back in 2002, hot indie filmmaker Doug

Liman (Go, Swingers) invaded the land of Hollywood genre filmmaking with his blissfully old-fashioned spy thriller, The Bourne Identity. Although set in modern times, the movie’s ambiance is from the time when spies were out in the Cold War, spying around colorful European locations and John Le Carre set the standard. Children of Men is a disturbing and effectively chilling peek into an all-toopossible dystopian future. Directed and co-written by Alfonso Cuarón, we are confronted with the disheartening notion that this ugly world of racism, violence and homeland security gone mad is a more likely futuristic scenario than a world in which peace reigns supreme. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a martial arts masterpiece and epic love story by Ang Lee that is action packed, emotionally fulfilling and unforgettable. With Far From Heaven, director Todd Haynes brilliantly pays tribute to the delightfully overripe Douglas Sirk melodramas of the fifties. Edward Lachman’s oversaturated cinematography is stunning and the film features remarkable acting by Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid and Dennis Haysbert. The Jersey fresh Garden State made writer-director Zach Braff (Scrubs) the independent cinema breakout star of 2004. While it presents universal truths about suburban life in general, the Jersey particulars give the movie added flavor.

In An Inconvenient Truth, the top doc of the decade, the truth hits you like a Category 5 hurricane as you watch Al Gore give his thoughtful and engaging presentation about global warming. With Kill Bill, Vol. 1 (2003), Quentin Tarantino unleashes his passion for the chop-socky genre with more arterial spray than a Texas Chainsaw Massacre marathon. He raises carnage to an art form, with a large Samurai slice of comedy on the side. Filmmaking genius or blood-loving freak? Tarantino is a bit of both. Kill Bill Vol. II finishes the tale with classic Tarantino verbosity. The debut feature of writer-director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, The Lives of Others, brilliantly delineates the complex nature of a police state, and the desire to hold on to one’s freedom and beliefs when “Big Brother” is always watching. Often enchanting, with rich, layered characters, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is a rousing adventure with a lovely air of sadness. The dark side of this adventure is beautifully balanced with the light, comic side by New Zealand writer-director Peter Jackson. Peter Weir’s rousing adventure at sea, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World features Russell Crowe, an exemplary action hero as the rugged Captain Jack, but the top acting kudos go to Paul Bettany as the ship’s philosophical doctor.

Christopher Nolan’s engaging existential thriller Memento told in a reverse narrative style, features a great performance by Guy Pearce as a man who was assaulted, his wife murdered and his short term memory destroyed. He will never get over the death of his wife because it is time that heals all wounds, and he can’t feel the passage of time. Clint Eastwood delivers a knockout punch with Million Dollar Baby, a dazzling drama about redemption, pride, loyalty and love. Small in scope and starring an actor small in stature — the remarkably expressive Peter Dinklage — The Station Agent is about three lonely people who become unlikely friends. Written and directed by New Jersey-native Tom McCarthy, the movie is quietly effective, touching one moment, hilarious the next. n
